your wardrobe that gets an update at this time of year, it’ll be the décor in your home too! Let’s face it, the weather isn’t always as sunny as we’d like it to be in this country, but at least if it’s raining outside, you can still create a look in your home that will put you in a cheery mood. An extremely versatile theme that’s really on trend at the moment and can be used in just about any setting, whether it’s a modern studio apartment, or a Victorian terraced house, is bohemian style. Influenced by different countries and periods of time, a bohemian scheme will feature plenty of bright colours, as well as a mixture of fabrics and patterns, all of which are guaranteed to lift your spirits on even the gloomiest of days. The good thing about this trend is that you can really embrace your creative side by using your imagination and coming up with a design scheme that is completely unique and personal to you. When it comes to colour, be bold in your choices and introduce shades such as hot pink and aqua for a fun scheme with plenty of atmosphere, or alternatively, you may wish to opt for rich purples, deep reds and oranges to give the space a Moroccan vibe that’s synonymous with bohemian style. Although you’ll undoubtedly want your boho inspired room to have a laid-back feel to it, it’s really important to consider the size of the room you’re working with, as well as how much light it receives, before getting too carried away with colour. If the room is fairly spacious, you can afford to be daring in your choices, but if it’s on the smaller side, or doesn’t receive much natural light, it’s worth sticking to a neutral scheme and limiting bold colours to a feature wall, or introducing colour via accessories and soft furnishings. Opting to use softer shades or neutral tones certainly doesn’t result in bland, boring interiors.

For a really contemporary take on the bohemian style, achieve a minimalist look by combining a selection of bright colours and patterns with stark white walls. Pattern is also a crucial element to achieving a bohemian look. Combining a mixture of bold coloured prints that have been inspired by various cultures and time periods will add depth and detail to the space, but also give the scheme a sense of individuality. One of the best things about this theme is that you can collect fabrics from your travels and incorporate them into the room, evoking memories of past experiences and giving the room a really personal touch. FOR all types of garden, large or small, laid to lawn or the merest patio, there are many ways of making your outdoor space attractive to buyers, and one of the most effective and inexpensive is to buy petunias. In June, most local garden centres and nurseries have plentiful displays of petunias, colourful trumpet-shaped flowers that come in a good array of colours ranging from white, through pink to the deepest shades of magenta, mauve and purple. They are native to South America, and in the same plant family as tobacco, hence the name given to this plant, derived from the native word ‘petun’ meaning ‘tobacco’ when it was first introduced to Europe in the early nineteenth century. In Victorian times, petunias, along with other new exotic tender plants such as calceolarias and salvias became all the rage as bedding plants, with armies of gardeners growing them from seed or overwintering them as rooted cuttings in large glasshouses in preparation for planting them out in serried ranks in formal flower beds or parterres in public parks and promenades for the summer tourist season. Petunias are difficult to raise from seed, so nearly all the modern varieties found in nurseries and garden centres are F1 hybrids available as young plants that have been propagated by soft-wood cuttings. For a period property such as a Victorian villa, cottage or bungalow, petunias look marvellous as summer bedding plants in borders and island beds, whilst any modern tiny front

For hanging baskets and window boxes it is best to buy Surfinia petunias, which are trailing grandiflora petunias, more vigorous and branching than other cultivars, very freeflowering with good wet-weather tolerance. Most nurseries sell Surfinia petunias already planted up in hanging baskets, and these will give instant 'kerb appeal' to your property. However much you decide to spend, the plants will give you personal pleasure during the marketing process, and when you find the right buyer who has fallen in love with your house, the baskets and containers can be taken with you to your new home, or sold as part of the negotiating package.
