PLYMOUTH LOVES CHRISTMAS AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF ACTIVITIES TO KEEP THE WHOLE FAMILY OCCUPIED IN ALL PARTS OF THE CITY THIS FESTIVE SEASON SANTA FUN RUN The fifth Santa Fun Run will be held on Sunday, December 7 – starting outside the entrance to Drake Circus Mall on Cornwall Street. The fun event is in aid of The Dame Hannah Rogers Trust and Cancer Research UK. There are two distances to choose from, the Main Route and the Mini Route, which can be completed in any way shape or form – be it running, walking, push chair or wheelchair. Entry fee includes a Santa outfit and a medal and is priced at £12.50 for adults. Children (aged between six and 16) can run for £7.50 and the distance is either one lap or two laps of the city centre. For more information and to enter visit www.plymouthsantafunrun.co.uk
SANTA’S GROTTO Visit Santa as he takes a break from his busy schedule to meet children in Plymouth. Santa and his elves can be found in the Armada gardens outside BHS until Christmas Eve.
SNOW GLOBE Climb inside and have a picture taken in your own magical scene. Entrance for up to four people is £10 and includes one free photo. Find it at the Place de Brest.
CHILDREN’S NATIVITY From Wednesday, December 17 to Saturday, December 20 children from local primary schools and church groups are bringing their nativity plays into the city
centre. Watch them perform in the afternoon under the Big Screen on the Piazza.
PLYMPTON LIGHTS UP Retailers in Plympton are organising two late-night shopping events for the Ridgeway. The first of the two evenings, both running between 4pm and 10pm, includes a grand Christmas light switch-on by a local celebrity at 6.30pm on Monday, December 1. Plympton Chamber of Commerce has raised £10,000 for the new lights with the help of Plympton councillors and local traders. As well as stalls, the street will be filled with music, face painting, carol singing and street entertainment. And the whole experience is set to be repeated, minus the switch on, the following Monday on December 8.

SPARKLING PLYMSTOCK After the dazzling Christmas light switchon, Plymstock Broadway is buzzing with Christmas activity and all of the shops are feeling the festive spirit. The Broadway’s Christmas lights are the perfect backdrop to purchase presents for your friends and family. What’s more, selected shops will be extending their opening hours to allow time for you to fit in your Christmas shopping. Life is back to normal again! Retired nurse Janet Parftt had been struggling with severe pain in her left foot for a number of months.

After watching the spectacular illuminations at 5.30pm, people will be able to enjoy a superb selection of markets, stalls and refreshments, together with street entertainment and music. For the little ones, there is free face-painting and fairground rides, while they can also see Santa Claus arrive in the town and meet him in his grotto free of charge.
Meanwhile, The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge is holding a carol service on Wednesday December 3 from 6.30-8.30pm. An evening of carols, warm mince pies and mulled wine will include a reading from local vicar Chris Osborne, a children’s nativity play – with real donkeys – and live music. Later in the week, on Saturday, December 6, Santa will be visiting the donkey sanctuary for its Christmas Fair.

A CHRISTMAS LIGHT SWITCH ON IS ALWAYS A MAGICAL TIME – IT REALLY SETS THE SCENE FOR A SEASON OF GOOD WILL. WHEN TAVISTOCK’S CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FLICKER INTO LIFE IT ALSO SIGNALS THE SOCIAL EVENT OF THE TOWN’S CALENDAR – THE DICKENSIAN EVENING. Dickensian Evenings are certainly not particular to Tavistock but there’s something about the way the market town steps back in time for one night of the year that makes it very special. On the last Friday of November the historic town is decked with twinkling fairy lights and Christmas pines decorated with baubles and bells. The whole town positively glows with traditional festive cheer.

RECIPES CHRISTMAS SIMPLY ISN’T THE SAME WITHOUT A TRADITIONAL DINNER. YET SOME PEOPLE ARE NERVOUS ABOUT PREPARING AND COOKING THE MEAL.
SIMPLE ROAST TURKEY SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS • 1 12- TO 14-POUND TURKEY, GIBLETS REMOVED • 3 CARROTS, ROUGHLY CHOPPED • 1 STALK CELERY, ROUGHLY CHOPPED • 2 MEDIUM YELLOW ONIONS, CUT INTO WEDGES • 6 TABLESPOONS UNSALTED BUTTER, MELTED, OR OLIVE OIL • 3/4 TEASPOON SALT • 1/4 TEASPOON BLACK PEPPER • 1 BUNCH FRESH FLAT-LEAF PARSLEY OR LEAVES FROM 1 BUNCH CELERY (OPTIONAL)
METHOD 1. Heat oven to 425° F. Rinse the turkey inside and out and pat it dry with paper towels. Place the wings underneath the body. If desired, tie the drumsticks together using kitchen string. Place the carrots, celery, and onions in a metal roasting pan. Transfer the turkey to a wire rack and place it on top of the vegetables. Drizzle the skin with the butter or oil and, using your fingers, spread it evenly. Season with the salt and pepper. 2. Roast the turkey, uncovered, until browned, 30 to 45 minutes. 3. Add a little cold water to pan. Cover the turkey loosely with foil. Reduce oven temperature to 350° F. Roast until a thermometer inserted in a thigh registers 180° F, about 2 hours total. Let the turkey rest for at least 30 minutes before carving. Garnish with the orange wedges and parsley or celery leaves (if using). If making gravy, reserve the juices in the roasting pan.
1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Butter and line the base and sides of a 30 x 35cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. 2. Separate the eggs, putting them into two large mixing bowls. Add the sugar and 2 tbsp water to the egg yolks. Using an electric whisk or tabletop mixer, whisk the sugar and yolks for about 5 mins until the mixture is light in colour and thick enough to leave a trail when the whisk blades are lifted. Sift in the flour and cocoa, then fold in lightly, using the whisk blades or a large metal spoon. 3. Using a clean whisk, beat the egg whites until they are stiff, then fold into the cake mixture in three batches, again using the blades to preserve as much air as possible. 4. Pour the mixture evenly over the prepared tin, then carefully spread to the edges. Bake for 10-12 mins, or until the cake feels firm to the touch. Put a large sheet of baking parchment on the work surface and sprinkle lightly with caster sugar. Turn the cake out onto the parchment and peel off the lining paper. Cover with a clean tea towel, then leave to cool completely. Trim a little cake from all the edges, then score along the edge of one of the long sides of the cake and roll up from there, using the paper to help you, rolling the paper inside the cake. 5. To make the icing and filling, bring the cream to the boil in a small pan, remove from the heat, then break in 400g of the chocolate. Stir until it is melted and smooth. Leave to cool, then chill until it is spreadable, about 1 hr. Chop the remaining chocolate, spoon a third of the icing into a bowl, then stir them together to make the filling. 6. Carefully unroll the cake, then spread all the filling over to within 2cm of the edges. Roll up the cake again using the paper to help you, then set on a board.
