WHILE on my way to a valuation recently, I walked past the Welcome to Cullompton sign. As estate agents, we get to know our local areas and communities very well – but this sign got me thinking. While I know Cullompton and the surrounding villages very well, I know very little about our twin town, Ploudalmézeau in Finistere, Brittany. The link between the two towns was established in 1977 and has been thriving for the past 38 years. At present there are nearly 60 members in the Cullompton Town Twinning association, with more joining every year. In 1981 Ploudalmézeau named a street in its town centre Rue De Cullompton, in honour of the growing relationship. In 1987 Cullompton returned the compliment with the naming of Ploudal Road. As the crow flies, the distance between Cullompton and Ploudalmézeau is 169 miles. In fact, the direct mileage from Cullompton to Ploudalmézeau is only slightly higher than the distance to London from Cullompton.
