SITUATED close to St Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church in Tiverton is this lovely Grade II-listed Georgian town house, with a beautiful garden running down to the River Exe. The house was built in the 1790s and according to the blue plaque on the front of the building, was the former home of Tiverton textile magnate John Heathcoat from 1817 to 1832. The house offers substantial living accommodation arranged over four floors, with well-proportioned rooms with high ceilings, decorative mouldings, marble fireplaces and many other lovely features so typical of this era. On entering the property, there is an imposing hallway, off which is a drawing room with folding doors into what was a dining room, but is currently a kitchen. On the lower ground floor is a large room which would make a super kitchen/family room, with doors leading into a small conservatory and garden. There is an additional room with adjoining en-suite bathroom. On the first floor there are two bedrooms, one currently converted into an imposing bathroom and dressing room, plus a further en suite, while on the second floor are two further bedrooms and another shower room. John Heathcoat (1783-1861), who once lived in this imposing property was an English inventor from Duffield in Derbyshire. During his apprenticeship he made an improvement to the warp-loom, so as to produce mitts of a lace-like appearance. He set up his own business in Nottingham but was forced to move away to Hathern in Leicestershire. After this new factory was attacked by former Luddites in 1816 he moved the business to Tiverton, where it became most successful, and established the Tiverton lace-making industry. Later in life he served as Member of Parliament for Tiverton.
