The girls aged 24 and 25 years old have already achieved so much, both are keen to stay in Plymouth after they finish and Sarah has even started work on a writing career, doing blogs for Sky Sports. Both have many medals under their belts and Tonia makes me laugh by confessing she still keeps hers in a drawer. Sarah – “I tie mine on a curtain rail. I have been telling Tonia for so long she needs to do that.” Tonia - “I have been meaning to for so long. You need to come and do it for me! I open the drawer and I’m just like ‘ahhh’.” A perfect evening for Tonia is relaxing at home with a Chinese takeaway while Sarah’s favourite restaurant is Lorenzo’s. For the time being though, the pair are busy competing in the last two World Series and training for the Commonwealth Games. Our first lady of fun PLYMOUTH’S OWN FUNNY LADY DAWN FRENCH IS APPEARING AT THE THEATRE ROYAL AS PART OF HER FIRST-EVER SOLO TOUR. RACHAEL DODD FINDS OUT WHY THE ACTRESS AND COMEDIAN IS SO EXCITED ABOUT THE SHOW

fter five years away from the stage, much-loved comedy legend Dawn French is embarking on her first-ever solo tour, based on her life and career, called 30 Million Minutes. The show will consist of various delights and riches, with the odd irksome tribulation thrown in, as Dawn looks at the various lessons life has taught her, and the things she knows for sure. Dawn said: “I’m sick with excitement about this solo tour. I am enjoying the fact I can’t categorise exactly what it is, but it’s somewhere between a monologue, a play, and an autobiographical slide show with a few funnies thrown in.” She also spoke highly of the show’s director Michael Grandage: “At last, I have one of my three genie wishes granted, which is that I finally get to work with Michael Grandage. “The other two wishes are as yet unfulfilled. They are secret obviously, but suffice to say, one is about Barack Obama in Speedos...” She claims to have misguidedly spent her whole life vigorously attempting to be a fully-functioning

female human, grappling with an extraordinary lack of willpower, combined with an enviable knack for nosey parking and showing off. Dawn has a lifelong connection to Plymouth. Born to a true Janner family, she spent her school days in the city and now she is married to Mark Bignell, the chief executive of Plymouth rehabilitation charity Hamoaze House. The BAFTA-winning comedian was educated at St Dunstan’s Abbey Boarding School, now Plymouth College. In 1977 she attended the London Central School of Speech and Drama, where she met and befriended Jennifer Saunders. They went on to collaborate for more than 30 years. Dawn’s career is filled with film, stage and television work, including Vicar Of Dibley, Lark Rise To Candleford, Psychoville, Jam And Jerusalem, Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, and Coraline to name a few. You’re advised to book now for the Plymouth show because Dawn insists it won’t be long before she is far too doolally to perform it!

Natalie’s taking care of business

ife is a balancing act for Natalie Wooldridge. Her career progression is nothing short of meteoric. At just 30 years old she is a director at fastgrowing engineering firm MGB Group, mum to an 18-month-old boy, Jude, and now young business person of the year. So, how does she do it? “Being a working mum has its challenges every day and I feel guilty for not spending every moment with my son. However I love my job and am passionate about doing a good job and being a good influence for my children.

“I started to review my tasks in work so that I could make every minute as effective as possible. “I would go into work early if I knew I was going to have a busy day so that I could still leave work at a reasonable time to spend a few hours with my son in the evening before he went bed. “At home, I have now set myself a rule and that I only work on my laptop at home when Jude is napping or of an evening when he is in bed. “I am keen to play an active role in the community and keep in touch with the industry that we work within. I am a Chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), I play an active role in the Plymouth Manufacturers Group and sit on the City College Plymouth Employers Advisory Board. “I am passionate about apprenticeships and my next challenge is to encourage more females into engineering!” Natalie began her career at MGB ten years ago as a HR assistant before rising through the ranks. Her full job title is now director of resourcing, operations and continuous improvement. Soon to be a mum for the second time, Natalie has now been a director since September and says she is enjoying the role. The Herald Business Awards held great success for MGB and a huge surprise for Natalie who won Young Businessperson of the Year. “I was delighted to win. I celebrated with orange juice as I can’t have anything to drink now!”

fter a brief conversation on Twitter about wearing red noses and clown shoes, I was slightly worried about how my interview with Le Navet Bete was going to go. However, I had no reason to be worried. Le Navet Bete are a group of four clowns, all male, who studied at Plymouth University and have gone from strength to strength since making a name for themselves in the ocean city. Contrary to what some may think about the theatre group when hearing their name, they are not a serious French company but rather a silly bunch of five guys made up of Matt Freeman, Alex Dunn, Nick Bunt, Dan Bianchi and a technical member Alex White. “Our name means the stupid or the daft turnip. It’s not a great translation so what might happen is you may end up with something in French that is the turnip beast or the stupid beast,” Matt confesses. “It’s the first hit on Google. It makes us sound international and really clever, it turns out we’re not, we’re just four idiots!” Le Navet Bete have recently toured their new show Extravaganza and will be returning at Christmas for yet another performance at the Barbican Theatre. “The audience in Plymouth are mainly non-theatre goers. The bulk of that crowd are not people who go to the theatre every week but they come and see us. “We’re really excited by our Christmas show – there is no reason for us not to keep going back. We’re big fans of Plymouth,” Alex explains. For anyone who hasn’t seen a Le Navet Bete performance then expect high energy, jokes close to

the edge of being unacceptable, very little clothing and a real bond between four great friends. “We tend to play on the edge of our shows being acceptable for everyone. It’s a really sensitive line and if you go too fair then you lose everyone. We play to the line where there are some things that go over the kids’ heads and the adults go, ‘oh my God, I can’t believe they did that’,” Matt tells me.

‘We had this fake arm and we dipped the fingers in salsa’ - MATT FREEMAN Although clowning around was at a minimum during our chat I could see the connection between the foursome and suspected that lots of tricks were played on tour. Matt – “That salsa thing wasn’t funny the other day.”

Alex – “That was hilarious! Matt was asleep in the van and we had this fake arm and we dipped the fingers in salsa and rubbed it over Matt’s lips. “We did it three times before he woke up screaming and spitting everywhere!” Le Navet Bete are a brilliant group of four very talented men who are regularly welcomed back to perform in Plymouth and continually offer their audiences something new. “Our shows are all about development. We can start off with something as crazy as we want to do a rollerblade disco and then that idea goes in between five people for so long that it comes out totally different. “That’s how all our theatre grows,” Alex explains. Le Navet Bete will be returning to Plymouth to perform their Christmas show at the Barbican Theatre. Check the Barbican Theatre website for more details.

PL Magazine sought the styling expertise of Plymouth College of Art fashion students Victoria Parnell, Charlotte Stocker and Jessica Vincent to create stylish looks from the rails of a Plymouth charity shop. High-street charity shops are a mine of designer and vintage clothing, giving you the chance to embrace this summer’s trends and not break the bank. At its heart fashion is revisionist – taking the best ideas from previous generations’ style and reworking or reinventing them to create clothes that feel fresh, modern and up to date. Plymouth College of Art fashion students are the new vanguard on the cusp of moving into the competitive world of fashion. fter shedding an incredible five stone between them, Becky Bowen and Charlotte Gregory certainly deserved to be rewarded with a little pampering. The two girls have made significant changes to their lifestyles since embarking on the tough regime of the Biggest Loser competition. The PL team decided the two competition winners really deserved a treat. So we arranged for their hair and make-up to be styled by Lise and Ellie at Experience Utopia before a glamorous afternoon shooting photos at Boringdon Hall. The girls are pictured modelling the latest trends from Evans, currently stocking an abundance of glamorous dresses and summer outfits for plus-size females. Becky, mother of two-year-old Maxwell, was the overall winner of the eight-week competition and lost an amazing three stone and three pounds. “I’m happy all the time now and full of energy,” she said. “I haven’t worn a dress since I was about 17 so it was really lovely to get pampered. The last few weeks we have just been living in our gym clothes so it was nice to get out of them. “I used to hate having my photograph taken and always hated full-length pictures – it was really nervewracking at first being the model but I put my faith in the photographer and got better nearer the end.” Plymouth University student Charlotte Gregory lost a total of two stone and two pounds and was the winner in Team Fit Bootcamp. She said: “It hasn’t just changed my life – it’s saved it. “It was amazing to have all my hair and make-up done for the shoot and not have it tied back and sweaty as it was for most of the eight weeks of the competition. “I never used to get in front of the camera before the Biggest Loser competition and wouldn’t look at any photos of myself. “It was nice having Becky there too as it didn’t feel so intimidating. I hope to be pleased with the photos and I will make sure I look at these ones!”

HERE’S OUR GUIDE TO THE MOST EXCITING OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Tree Surfing Go Ape near Exeter and The Tamar Centre at Gulworthy near Tavistock offer tree-surfing activities for the whole family. Climb fifty feet into the forest canopy and then traverse the tree tops on zip lines and rope bridges for an adrenalin buzz guaranteed to make you smile... or scream. All tree surfers are fitted with safety harnesses so there’s no danger of falling to your doom. Again, there is a minimum age of eight but there’s usually no upper age limit so why not get some brave grandparents involved too!

Zorbing Even the most reluctant of children will find it very difficult to refuse zorbing. Take a giant inflatable sphere, climb inside, buckle in and roll down a large hill. Even better, get the washing machine experience and have them chuck some water in their with you. You and the kids will emerge grinning from ear to ear and squeaky clean too. Devon’s nearest Zorb centre is in Barnstaple at Zorb Ball Devon, it’s best to book in advance. Paintballing Paintballing is a great example of keeping active by accident. You and the kids will be having so much fun dodging muck and pellets you won’t notice you’re actually exercising. Sneaky! You’ll be kitted up with safety gear, including a helmet and protective overalls and eyewear and, of course, a paint gun. Divide and conquer in teams or turn renegade and go it alone as you hunt your enemy down and paint them in pretty colours. There is a minimum age for most paintballing sites of 12 years. There are several paintballing sites near Plymouth including Delta Force near Sparkwell and Go Ballisitic at Exeter.

Dry ski slopes and tobogganing Most Plymouth locals will have spied the ski slopes from the motorway. The centre offers beginners’ lessons in skiing and snowboarding as well as sno-tubing and tobogganing. Sno-tubing involves sitting in a large rubber doughnut and flying down the intermediate ski slope in it. The toboggan run is an exhilarating 650 metres of twisting, turning and altitude-dropping fun while sat on what resembles a reinforced tea trays.

Treasure hunts A treasure hunt for the digital age that’s perfect for families; geocaching. More than six-million people worldwide are already involved and all you need to play is a GPS enabled device. Various caches (small containers, usually holding a visitors ‘logbook and a ‘treasure’ of some kind) are hidden across the world and beyond. There are 25,000 of them in Devon alone. Log on to a website like www.geocaching.com and download the geocache app. It will show you local caches, a clue to find them and their approximate area. Now all you have to do is go out and search for them. The only rules for geocaching are that you log your visit on the paper included, replace the treasure you take with a small gift of greater or equal value and most importantly put it back for others to enjoy. The detail behind Cheri Hunston’s work is so intricate you could almost imagine the inky characters bursting to life. It is this fairytale and fantasy that the 44-year-old artist hopes to create. She said: “I want to share how I see animals and recreate the pleasure that nature gives me. I want the art to create the beginnings of a story in the viewer’s mind. I use ink because I like its vibrancy, but it’s probably the most unforgiving medium because it stains instantly. If you make a mistake you have to adapt the picture or start again.” From a glint in the eye to a tilt of the ear, attention to detail counts. A self-confessed perfectionist, each subject is thoroughly researched before pen touches paper – and she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty doing so. “If I find a dead animal, if it’s not too gory, I will take photos and explore how the wings spread or feel the fur. It’s about getting to know the way limbs move, bone and muscle structure, the texture of fur and the way it lays.” Cheri, of Yealmpton, on the outskirts of Plymouth, has an artistic background – her mother painted in oils, her father was a calligrapher and bookbinder. “There was always art paraphernalia around the house. After leaving home, if I didn’t have any art materials I would work with nail varnish, gloss paint, emulsion, lipstick – anything I could get my hands on.”

You’re guaranteed blue skies whatever the weather if you get on board with coastal chic, which summons up pleasing thoughts of holidays, sandy beaches and relaxed living, no matter what the time of year. While the look never sails out of fashion, it does need refreshing, or it could end up looking as limp as last year’s seaweed. This year, it can still be interpreted as a jaunty nautical navy and white pastiche, but if that’s too predictable and you fear it won’t look appropriate in the colder winter months, there are more subtle takes. et within 108 acres of woodland, along a stretch of the River Tamar in Milton Abbot, Hotel Endsleigh has seen many owners over the years. The latest is Olga Polizzi, mother of Channel 4’s Hotel Inspector Alex Polizzi, who have between them carefully restored the house and garden of the Grade I listed property. The first stone was laid at Endsleigh in 1812 by Georgina, Duchess of Bedford. The Bedford family owned a third of Devon and decided Milton Abott was the prettiest place in the county to build their house. The hotel was originally designed by Jeffry Wyatt for the 6th Duke of Bedford in 1811, surrounded by beautiful gardens, follies and grottos, created by Humphry Repton in 1814. The Duke chose this spot of enchanting beauty for his fishing and hunting lodge. Hotel Endsleigh is today one of the most important regency country houses remaining. Olga Polizzi bought the hotel in 2004 for daughter Alex who instantly fell madly in love with the property and the unique and unspoilt setting. Alex and Olga have carefully restored the hotel to the spirit of its regency history.

Almost all of the 16 bedrooms have magnificent views of the gardens, the River Tamar and beyond across Devon, and are all individually designed. Rooms five and eight still showcase original hand-painted wallpaper and stunning marble bathrooms. Room eight is steeped in history since Queen Victoria once stayed there.

The 108 acres are maintained by four gardeners who work hard to protect the woodland and prune the flowers. The River Tamar runs through the gardens and

the building caters for fishermen with wellies and antique hooks for wet coats. The Duke of Bedford was a passionate fisherman and brought his estate manager and agricultural labourers from his estate in Scotland to create croys in the river, for the purpose of creating a salmon river. Humphry Repton was hired to design the gardens. The hotel is a member of the Endsleigh Fishing Club and guests can fish along eight miles of the best salmon and sea trout river in England. Little touches inside the hotel include the ‘E’s embroidered on every pillow case and ‘Endsleigh’ stitched into the bed linen. All the crockery is inspired by Humphry Repton and the finishing touches in the bedrooms are in most cases one-off antiques. Walking along the hallways it is not uncommon to see old fire buckets and dial telephones. They’re the kind of touches that Alex likes to encourage when she visits other hotels during her TV visits. Our verdict on her hotel is that it is very special.

jewel in the crown of gardens has plenty of gems on offer in its unique setting. Unusual features include a wildlife pool with floating island, a working water wheel and a cave. A wide variety of flowering plants and a vegetable area containing a sunken greenhouse, ensures this garden has something for everyone. For the past 44 years, Peter and Ann Tremain have certainly put their own stamp on the plot, named Galen Way, which they

opened to the public as part of the St Luke’s Open Gardens 2014. Peter said: “We had 165 people come through the garden, the highest we’ve had, and may have had more if the weather had been better! “We are pleased to have raised over £1,000 for St Luke’s.” The couple are very much part of village life, with Ann as bookings secretary and Peter caretaker of Sparkwell Parish Hall. Their garden has also featured heavily within the community as their swimming pool was used regularly by the youth club run by the couple, and is opened as part of Sparkwell Village Fair. Mostly filled in, the deep end of the pool now forms a ‘cave’ home to a 1,000 litre water tank used in the greenhouses, and the dark and dank conditions may be perfect for growing mushrooms, says Peter. Above ground, a pond is full of around 170 fish, and a wildlife pool complete with floating island has plenty of tadpoles – these young amphibians once grown should help to keep down the slug population. Plants, which Ann says she buys locally as much as possible so she knows they will grow well in the garden, include a rhododendron which was

affected by the drought in 1976 but is now the star of the show. You can also find magnolia, dahlia, Daphne, wisteria and fuchsia, as well as a luscious and pristine green lawn which Peter cuts and then rolls, with a sprinkling of feed along the way. A stream runs along the length of the garden, turning the water wheel. With a particular passion for scented flowers, the couple have planted clematis, sweet peas wrapped around a lilac and lily of the valley. Arum lilies, pennywort, bottle brush (Callistemon), hydrangea, deciduous shrub weigela, peonies, Chinese lantern and pieris, provide plenty of colour. With a ‘no dig’ policy when it comes to their organic vegetables, Peter and Ann use a board across the earth as they do not step on it. They are mainly self sufficient over the summer months. Very much into recycling, the couple make their own compost, Peter’s shed has been built from recycled material and grey water collected from their roof is used to flush the toilet. A rotating summer house, built by Peter, and usually home to nesting wrens, is known as their ‘sun trap’ as you can follow the direction of the sun, says Ann. es, it was a little drizzly and yes, I was reticent about picking and sampling what I had always passed by without a second glance on walks around Plymouth but foraging expert, John Wright made my first foraging expedition edible and entertaining. John Wright has an easy way with people and as our motley (and soggy) group followed him around the Devil’s Point area of Plymouth we were engaged with friendly banter, jokes, recipes and facts about the edible, and not so palatable, weeds that grow on and around our Plymouth shores. John’s trademark wide-brimmed hat and cheeky, relaxed manner belies the wealth of knowledge John has about our lesser-favoured plants. Everything is interesting, has a purpose and has probably been eaten by John in his quest to understand the edible world around him. With our group of chefs and enthusiasts in tow, he stops and looks at everything, digging down if necessary to reveal bulbs showing us what they look like even if they aren’t edible. After an initial rainy start, we were warmed by John’s enthusiasm – something demonstrated in the handy books he writes for River Cottage – and the group became infused with childlike curiosity about everything we saw, with John, like a patient parent

We scramble over rocks to find weather beaten delicacies and delve into rock pools to pull out gut weed explaining what we are looking at and whether it is edible, tasty, poisonous or difficult to digest. Becoming overly eager I asked whether it would be possible to live entirely from foraged foods. John’s measured reply was that we could, but would probably have to search for food and eat all day in order to fuel our bodies – rather like pandas – but that doesn’t dampen my spirits. I get stuck into sea beet after struggling, rather comically, over the craggy shore. We scramble over rocks to find weather-beaten delicacies, delve into rock pools to pull out gut weed and take a detour to munch on chickweed. One soggy foot and non-existent hairdo later and I’m thoroughly invigorated and know I won’t look at weeds in the same way ever again. River Cottage serves up a delicious gut weed rosti made by combining potatoes, lemons and limes, parsley and generous handfuls of locallypicked gut weed. Grows in a weave-like pattern in waste areas, cultivated fields and pastures, even domestic gardens. Small delicate leaves and tiny white flowers. Tastes delicious but can be chewy, like eating grass. Rock samphire or sea fennel

A pungent member of the carrot family. Sprawls and straggles of antler-like spiky shaped leaves can be found on coastal cliffs. Tastes a bit like carrot with a turps aftertaste. Steam, then add butter. Gut weed or grass kelp

Appearing from midwinter onwards, related to the lily and the onion, this is a perennial bulb flower that looks like a spring onion. It has a strong garlic smell and the leaves are too tough to be edible raw, though they can be stir fried.

iver Cottage Canteen Head Chef Joe Draper is clearly an enthusiastic cook who champions all that our regional larder has to offer but above all he is an easy going family man whose starry beginnings strengthened his Devon roots. Joe is an Ashburton native, currently renovating a house with partner Trisha and three-year-old son Aiden. After working locally in restaurant kitchens and rising through the ranks he got the call aged 19 to work for famously grumpy (but highly talented) chef Marco Pierre White, eventually working his way up to sous chef at Pierre-White’s Chez Max restaurant in Knightsbridge. “You learn structure, to be honest and dedication. You are literally working 19 hours a day with the same people – you don’t know your family as well as you know the chefs and kitchen crew.” Following the classical training and demanding hours at Chez Max, Joe began a five-year stint eventually becoming Senior Sous Chef at exclusive five-star hotel, One Aldwych on the Strand, creating modern European menus for the two Rosette award-winning hotel and managing the entire kitchen following his boss’s departure. “The challenge of being thrown in at the deep end gets the very best from me. I like a challenge and I like to be tested otherwise I get bored.” After One Aldwych, Joe changed gear by working for a season as the cook for an Italian Formula One Ferrari team. Mixing with the rich and famous and working with the finest Italian ingredients proved exciting but not exactly what he was looking for. “I was at every race around Europe, cooking in the paddock, watching all the races. It was quite flash – I had my own apartment and everything paid for but it wasn’t really my scene.”

He was quickly recruited by Tramps in Piccadilly with its history of celebrity and glamour. After almost a decade in London, the capital lost its lustre and Joe returned to Devon.

Fry onions in a hot pan with a little oil and turn down to a medium heat. When the onions start to stick on the bottom of the pan give it a stir as this helps the onions caramelize.

Drinking in the sunny weather YANNICK LOUE, OF LE VIGNOBLE, BOUTIQUE WINE LOUNGE & MERCHANT, TELLS US HOW TO ENJOY WINE IN THE SUN

ummer is on the horizon, tentatively perhaps, but definitely on the way. It’s one of my favourite seasons: the atmosphere in the Royal William Yard changes with the warmer days and balmy evenings. Our customers lounge on the terrace or sprawl out on the grass; enjoying the sun with a glass of wine. There’s a continental feel that reminds me of being back in Paris, sitting in a little cafe on the banks of the Seine with a bottle of rosé Whispering Angel, from Chateau D’Esclans, just watching the world go by. There’s always something about this time of year that makes me want to discover new wines and explore new flavours. I don’t know if it comes from spending long, lazy summers in France but nothing says summer more to me than opening a bottle of wine that I’ve never tried before. Temperatures can really soar in France’s southern regions and trying new wines in the sun can be a blessing and curse: a hot

sunny day and alcohol can be a dangerous mix. That’s why it’s so important to carefully select your wines if you’re going to be drinking at a BBQ, in the garden or out on the beach.

Here are some of my top tips for enjoying wine in the sun...

On a hot summer day avoid high alcohol level wines – stay around the 11.5% 12% mark. Choose a refreshing wine but be careful of the level of sweetness as the sweeter the wine the more thirsty you will become. A light and crisp white or rosé wine is usually a winner. There are quite a few combinations that work well in summer and my philosophy is to go with what you like – not what you think you should like. If you are planning a BBQ and only drink red, I’d suggest a young and cool Beaujolais Gamay or Marlborough Pinot Noir. The subtle sweet and spicy aromas will add to the flavour of the meat.

For long summer lunches, picnics and pre-dinner drinks in the evening sun, a good Provencal-style rosé would hit the right note. It’s light, floral and delicate. A day at the beach isn’t complete without sandcastles and a crab sandwich. To complement your lunch try a nice 100 per cent Verdejo from the Rueda in Spain – it’s refreshing, fruity and inexpensive. To keep your white and rosé wines the perfect temperature for all your summer outings put the wine at the bottom of your fridge overnight, then place in the freezer two hours before you leave. On the day try to keep the wine in a cool bag or box and it should be perfect come lunchtime.

hen you look at the beautiful vista of the Sound, the Barbican and our rich, naval heritage it’s no surprise that Plymouth was named Britain’s Ocean City. Plymouth is a standard bearer for water-based events and the Saltash Regatta, Soltaire du Figaro and St Luke’s Dragon Boat Race are all taking place in the area this month. Local companies and organisations are gearing up to compete in St Luke’s first Dragon Boat Race on June 15. Teams of 10-16 people will race replica Chinese war canoes over a short course at the Mount Batten Activity Centre to raise money for the charity. Companies signed up so far include British Aerospace and Morgan Sindall. On the day of the event, each team will be allocated three timed races, with a leader board updated throughout the day to keep up the competitive spirit. There will be the opportunity to qualify for the grand final,

which will be followed by an awards ceremony at the end of the day. The event coincides with Father’s Day and families are encouraged to watch the races. Supporters on the banks can cheer on the boats as they enjoy a whole host of entertainment including a BBQ, DJ, bands and face painting. The 179th Saltash Regatta and Waterside Festival, on the weekend of June 21 and 22, is a real, sailing spectacle. It’s a colourful festival rich in heritage and hosts three racing events throughout the weekend. The mixed and veterans pilot gig championship, on Saturday and Sunday, is hosted by Caradon Pilot Gig Club for more experienced rowers. The five towns challenge on Saturday features councillors from Saltash, Callington, Liskeard, Torpoint and Looe and the ever-popular England and Back cutter race on Sunday sees amateur rowers in fancy dress try to plant a Cornish flag on Plymouth shores. And, speaking of fancy dress, there’s a pirate theme for children and big kids alike. Visit the stalls or try a sailing taster session available on Sunday onboard the Tamar barge ‘Shamrock’. Armed Forces Day IT’S QUICK MARCH TO THE HOE ON JUNE 28 FOR A LEISURELY DAY OUT AS OUR CITY SALUTES THE MILITARY

lymouth Armed Forces Day, sponsored by Devonport Dockyard operator Babcock, has become one of the most popular dates in the festival calendar. The city celebration is a part of the national Armed Forces Day and an opportunity to see men and women in uniform close up. There will be displays by current personnel, veterans, cadet forces, support agencies and charities. Military hardware is another big draw as the public says thank you and awareness is raised. Five different types of aircraft will fly in the air show sponsored by UTC Aerospace Systems; the Royal

Navy Raiders parachute team will land on the Hoe; and a Merlin helicopter will be next to the Belvedere. Each branch of the military will have its own showcase village, as will veterans and the emergency services. The veterans’ village, which is sponsored by DDRC Healthcare, will host over 50 organisations, charities and historic vehicle displays supporting serving and former personnel and their families. The precursor to Armed Forces Day is a flag-raising ceremony on Monday, June 23 at 10am outside Plymouth Guildhall. This will see the new Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Fox, present badges to new veterans.

Bluesman in the frame MARTIN FREEMAN MEETS A CITY MUSICIAN WHO HAS PHOTOGRAPHED SOME OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN THE ROCK WORLD

luesman Jimmy Appudurai-chua has quite a CV. He once knocked the Beatles off number one and mixed with some of the biggest names in the rock world – Eric Clapton and Bryan Adams among them – in a second career as a photographer. He still gigs several times a year in his native Singapore. Now the Torpoint-resident guitarist is making his debut at the Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival on Friday, June 13. As part of Straydogs, Jimmy was number one in Malaysia and Singapore when the R&B band’s tune Freedom edged the Beatles out of the way in 1969. The bluesman’s story would go on to include being pushed out of the strait-laced city state, losing his house and his wife, gaining and kicking a drug habit and that second living as a photographer after he moved to the UK. Jimmy was running a photo-processing business in Notting Hill when he met composer Michael Kamen, whose credits include the score for the 1991 film Robin Hood and its theme (Everything I Do) I Do It For You. “I became friendly with Michael and he introduced me to Eric Clapton,” says Jimmy. “Michael would invite me to his big Thanksgiving

parties full of stars, and ask me to photograph them.” He later worked for magazines and record companies covering shows by Clapton, Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty and Jimmy Page. But his photo business was derailed and his life thrown into shock by kidney disease. He had a transplant in 2010 and soon began gigging again. Jimmy will be appearing at the festival with keyboard man Steve Whiteway who has a band name in common. “My first band was called the Meltones – and Steve had a band of the same name in the Seventies!”

Secret garden full of Elizabethan splendour THE LABYRINTHINE ALLEYWAYS OF THE BARBICAN HOLD A MYRIAD OF SURPRISES. RACHAEL DODD DISCOVERS ONE OF THEIR BEST SECRETS

his green space, hiding behind New Street. surrounded on all sides by the Barbican’s historic buildings, is so well hidden that surprisingly few people ever find it. The reward of finding the gardens is all part of their charm. But for those of you who'd much rather cut to the chase, here’s the cheat’s guide. Walking down Southside Street towards the Barbican you'll come to Stokes Lane on your right. Walk up the lane and look right. You'll see the Elizabethan Gardens sign on the wall, the entrance is directly below it. An inconspicuous passageway opens out to reveal a hidden gem: courtyards, box hedges and even a fountain; all designed to recreate a 17th century garden. You'll find no chaotic explosions of wildflowers here. This garden is restrained and regal. Regimented, straight borders keep their colourful, floral captives in check. The name is something of a red herring; the gardens were actually established in 1970 to celebrate 350 years since the Pilgrims left for America aboard the Mayflower. The area was architected by Alan Miller Williams and constructed by Cooper Construction and David Colwill. Great care has been taken to ensure the flora are historically

accurate; nothing was planted that didn’t exist in Britain before the 1600s. From the New Street entrance you'll first enter the lower garden. This smaller area features old familiars; honeysuckle, hibiscus, hazel, hedgehog holly, lilac, silver birch and mock orange. A set of stone steps leads to the central garden. On the wall is a plaque naming the men and women who sailed into the history books aboard the Mayflower. A beautiful black Mulberry tree is the centrepiece of the main courtyard. King James

An inconspicuous passageway opens out to reveal a hidden gem... I imported thousands of these trees in the 17th century. He had a cunning plan to establish silk production in England – silk worms will only eat Mulberry leaves. Unfortunately, the worms were unimpressed and the King’s plan failed but the Mulberry tree had taken root. Heading left at the Mulberry tree, a small fountain trickles peacefully in front of the Castle Street entrance to the gardens. The doorway features the crest, lintel and arch of the Hospital of the Poor’s Portion that once stood in Catherine Street 200 years ago.

Further ahead lies the knot garden. intricately planted box hedges, no more than a foot high, weave together in a symmetrical pattern. Gorgeous beds of Rosa and honeysuckle provide splashes of red and yellow in the flowering season. The Elizabethan Gardens are full of little details – look out for the carving of the Mayflower above the partition wall.

Watch the world championships for singlehanded yachtsmen and women featuring Plymouth for the first time ever. The four-leg race takes a month to complete, starting on the north-west coast of France, and is considered one of the main training grounds for the famous, round-theworld Vendée Globe race. Roughly 45 sailors, all with identical 33ft boats, will be arriving in Sutton Harbour at the end of Leg 1 on June 11. Leg 2 begins on June 14 with a race inside the Breakwater.

Perhaps the coolest event of the whole summer, the Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival attracts visitors from the across the world for its eclectic mix of music and entertainment. The fabulous free event brings the spirit of New Orleans to Plymouth waterfront.

A carnival celebration welcomes the new Mayor to their role. This year’s theme celebrates the 100th anniversary of the three towns of Devonport, Stonehouse and Plymouth merging to form the city we know today. Staged entertainment, community stalls, play areas and the spectacle of a parade at 1pm make for a fun day out for all the family.

Run by Dragon Boat events for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, companies and organisations form teams to compete in the first-ever Dragon Boat Race. Teams of 10-16 people race replica Chinese war canoes over a short course at the Mount Batten Activity Centre, Plymouth, to raise money for the local charity. Join hundreds of spectators to watch the teams battle for victory.

The annual event returns with family water-based entertainment for all ages. Expect Cornish Pilot Gig Racing, fun rowing events, craft stalls, a vibrant street market, live music at two venues, sailing taster sessions, children’s entertainers and lots of food and drink stalls! Entry is free, but visitors are encouraged to buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win a range of fabulous prizes.

Swap Henman Hill for Plymouth Piazza, which will be transformed with picket fencing, grass and chairs in homage to the world-famous tennis championship. The Big Screen will be showing matches live so grab some strawberries and cream and watch a set in the open air.

Plymouth in Fashion – what a success! THE LATEST CATWALK LOOKS CAME TO THE CITY FOR PLYMOUTH IN FASHION, AS EMILY SMITH REPORTS

lymouth in Fashion was a week-long celebration of brilliant events for people across the city, showcasing the latest fashion trends. The City Centre Company worked in partnership with The Herald along with City College Plymouth, Plymouth College of Art, Drake Circus, The Treasury and Plymouth retailers to show fashion lovers the styles and outfits available in city stores. “Plymouth in Fashion captured the flair and trends on offer in the city right now,” said City Centre Company Manager Stefan Krause. “It proved very popular and was an amazing production.” The fashion festival ended with three catwalk shows. The first of the three shows was held in the iconic Treasury building. Guests enjoyed an afternoon tea while models walked among them in cocktail dresses and summer outfits from Coast, House of Fraser and Bon Marche. Treasury owner Ben Shearn said: “It was a wonderful event that proved popular with our audience. I have enjoyed working with everyone and seeing all the fantastic brands Plymouth has to offer.” Plymouth Guildhall was transformed to make way for an Urban Lockdown catwalk and Diamonds and Pearls, the latter showcasing the most elegant of outfits on offer in Plymouth now. Guests attending the Diamonds and Pearls catwalk show were wowed by floor-length dresses and amazing red outfits from Jovani and men in black and white suits.
