Discover a remarkable garden near Exeter If springtime makes you long to get out into the garden, then this delightful country house near Exeter might be the home for you. It has a showpiece garden of 25 acres, which has been opened to the public through the National Gardens Scheme for many years. Sherwood House is in a tranquil location five miles from Exeter, near the charming village of Newton St Cyres. The lovely ten-bedroomed property was built in 1907 in the Arts and Crafts style and stands centrally within a woodland garden which includes magnificent flowering shrubs and trees. “We have something like 230 magnolias, and they are in full bloom looking wonderful right now,” says the owner John Quicke, whose father Sir John Quicke and mother Prue developed the garden in two sheltered Devon valleys over more than two decades. The property is for sale for the first time since Sir John bought it in the 1960s and this is a significant opportunity for anyone looking for a substantial yet welcoming family home in a superb location. “I first moved here when I was 15, along with my five siblings,” remembers John Quicke today. “Then about eight years ago, my wife and I moved back in again to support my parents who were elderly. Over the years we have had some wonderful family parties and occasions here, including my sister Mary’s wedding, my father’s 80th birthday and countless family Christmases.”

Becky Sheaves discovers a spacious country house in an enchanting environment The gardens are also well known in the wider community here, and much loved locally, as they have been opened to the public hundreds of times, allowing local families and children to enjoy themselves here. Today, with the spring trees and shrubs in full bloom, the approach to Sherwood House up a sweeping drive is nothing short of breath-taking, as you pass stunning banks of ornamental shrubs with enticing paths leading away to more exciting vistas. The large two-storey house is arranged around a central courtyard. In the past few years it has been occupied by two generations of the Quicke family and some modifications to the original layout have been

About the area Location: Sherwood House is two miles from the village of Newton St Cyres, which has a post office/shop, a recreation ground with two football pitches, a cricket pitch and two tennis courts.[2] Say cheese: The Quicke family, who have owned Sherwood House since the 1960s, make awardwinning cheese on their dairy farm in the village. The renowned Quickes Farm Shop sells their superb traditional cheeses and much more. Commuting? Exeter is five miles away, with many facilities including university, mainline railway, airport, superb shopping and hospital. Everyday shopping: As a less busy alternative, the old market town of Crediton nearby meets most everyday needs. Schools: Newton St Cyres has a

primary school described by Ofsted as “outstanding”. For state secondary education, children go on to Queen Elizabeth’s College in Crediton which is “good”, says Ofsted. The excellent private schools such as Exeter School (mixed) and Maynard’s (girls) in Exeter are within easy reach. Pubs: Newton St Cyres has two good pubs, The Beer Engine, which has good food, and The Crown and Sceptre in the village centre. Eat out: The Lazy Toad at Bramford Speke is a superb gastro pub just a few miles from Sherwood House, with lovely river walks. The beautiful gardens at the ten-bedroomed Sherwood House have been open to the public on many occasions made to accommodate this, such as a second kitchen and downstairs bedroom, but the house can easily be returned to become one property. One of the most appealing rooms is the large kitchen/breakfast room, with a cast iron Eagle range, Aga and Bosch oven. The wonderful dining room is panelled in classic Arts and Crafts style and features a woodburning stove and handsome oak staircase leading up to the first floor. Other rooms on the ground floor include two cloakrooms, a wine store, two utility rooms, laundry room, a second kitchen, and three sitting rooms. On the first floor there are nine bedrooms, four of which have ensuite bathrooms. There is also a study, linen room, bathroom, sitting room, third kitchen and generous attic space which includes a photographic dark room. “Although it is a large country house, the rooms are comfortably proportioned and not cold or imposing. This is a very welcoming, easy place to live your day-to-day life,” says John. “We installed a wood-chipboiler in 2008, to make use of the wood we have in the estate, while retaining the existing oil-fuelled boiler, and it keeps the place really warm for a reasonable cost.” The main house and garden come with lots of outbuildings including a three-bedroomed property called

Sherwood House Newton St Cyres, Devon Excess £2 million

Sherwood Cottage. There is also a large barn created from the original medieval house which was on the property, providing a large interior open space. The brick range of potting sheds and outbuildings are centred around an enclosed courtyard. The 23 acres of garden are surrounded by a deer-proof fence. Beyond that, there is a ring of a 25 acres of sloping pasture, running out to the encircling forests.

Richard Addington of Savills in Exeter is supervising the sale of the property. Richard says: “Driving to Sherwood up the long no-through road, leading through the woods, one leaves all traces of the outside world behind and enters a private and enchanting environment. “The beautiful gardens, which have been opened on a voluntary basis under the National Gardens Scheme, include mature trees and deep val-

leys. The sense of remoteness, and the care taken to blend the cultivated and wild plants, combine to provide a magical experience. “The main house is spacious and well appointed with period touches and the cottage and outbuildings offer a buyer even greater versatility and space.” Follow Becky on twitter @BeckySheavesWMN

Eastern promise in Westcountry Thanks to a strong performance in the second half of 2013, Devon’s housing market is off to a promising start this year. According to the Land Registry, average house prices in Devon are up 2% from 12 months ago. At Savills, our Prime Property Performance research also predicts a 4% price growth throughout 2014. Much of this demand is being driven by buyers from the South East, with a predicted 58% of house purchasers in Devon originating from outside the county. Nowhere is the renewed optimism more prevalent than in East Devon where we have more applicants with a budget of over £1 million looking for property than in any other area of Devon, including the South Hams. Our viewings in East Devon are up 2% in the first quarter of 2014 compared with quarter one last year. It is easy to see why East Devon is enjoying such popularity. It has some of the most attractive countryside in the county and much of it designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 95-mile coastline, from Exmouth in the west to Swanage in Dorset to the east, is designated a World Heritage Site and known as The Jurassic Coast. Though beaches are not that common, and are mainly pebble, the coast is favoured by walkers as it offers spectacular scenery. The most popular coastal towns are Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, and Lyme Regis on the Dorset border. The inland market towns of Honiton and Axminster are also popular. We have three beautiful East Devon properties on the market, all of which are situated around the pretty Regency seaside town of Sidmouth. Combe Wood House in Salcombe Regis is a splendidly refurbished Grade II listed 16th century farm-

Richard Addington of Savills looks at the market in East Devon house adjoining National Trust land with spectacular sea views. The thatched property has been significantly modernised, blending quality additions with character features. The gardens have been lovingly managed. Combe Wood House has a guide price of £1.5 million. South Down House is a beautifullypresented country house on the cliff tops of Salcombe Hill, with westerly views along The Jurassic Coast. The

Nowhere is the renewed optimism more prevalent than in East Devon property offers spacious accommodation and is set within its own mature gardens, surrounded by National Trust land. South Down House has a guide price of £1.5 million. The third property, 1 Peak Place,

Cotmaton Road, Sidmouth is an exclusive and innovative conversion of a former Victorian water reservoir, completed in 2009 and overlooking the Jurassic coastline. It has been built to exacting modern standards. In an elevated position, it is next to Sidmouth Golf Course, with a guide price of £635,000. Moving east along the coastline, we have also recently sold Ware House in Lyme Regis. The property has a cinematic claim to fame as it was used as the main house in the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. The classic Regency home, built between 1811 and 1820, has tall light rooms with large windows, many of which open out on to the terrace. Most of the rooms have wonderful plasterwork or panelling. Centrally located within its 17 acres, Ware House had a guide price of £2.5 million. With a handful of sales completed in the traditionally slow-moving first quarter of the year, a growing number of East Devon homes coming to the market and a constant demand for such properties from the South East and overseas, it is clear that the east of the county will continue to be a main driver for the continued recovery of the local property market throughout 2014. Homes with lovely gardens Westcott Farm, Witheridge £735,000

Pretty garden in Becky Sheaves explores the show garden celebrating Devon’s horticultural possibilities

Right in the rural centre of Devon, you’ll find this lovely 16th century farmhouse with 11.5 acres of land. There are paddocks, woodland and streams, as well as an orchard, gardens and lovely courtyard of traditional barns. Agents: Jackson-Stops &Staff, Exeter, 01392 214222, www.jacksonstops.co.uk

In the sought-after South Hams village near Totnes, this charming thatched property has just come the market. Its well-tended cottage garden includes a greenhouse and summerhouse. Agents: Marchand Petit, 01803 847979, www.marchandpetit.co.uk

Primrose Cottage, Cheriton Fitzpaine £399,950

As a county, Devon encompasses a huge variety of landscapes. From granite moorland to wooded river valleys, sheltered coombes leading down to dramatic coasts and gently rolling inland hills with fields rich with fertile red earth. Along the county’s south coast, the climate is usually similar to that of Cornwall, warmed by waters of the Gulf Stream. Here, it is possible to grow a wide variety of plants, including palm trees and Mediterranean specialities. Further inland, the Devon habitat provides scope for hundreds of other varieties. Paul Stone, the award-winning landscape gardener from Falmouth, has created a show garden celebrating Devon’s horticultural possibilities. Called The Devon Scene, it takes pride of place in Trago Mill’s £11 million garden centre in Newton Abbot. Paul says: “Trago’s chairman, Bruce Robertson, rightly insisted that a tribute to Devon should take pole position in The Garden Park. “In my mind, this garden is a sundrenched gem from the heart of a Westcountry summer. A lazy, shallow river ripples along a riverbank beside an old thatched country inn and flowers blossom everywhere you look. I’ve even included a proper prehistoric-style clapper bridge here as well, with echoes of Dartmoor.” Paul’s planting here starts with a fragrant carpet of narcissi in early spring, with bluebells popping up just a little later. In the summer, you’ll find wildflowers beneath swaying willows and lamb’s tail hazels. Outside the door of the thatched country

pub are tubs of flowers and there is a wealth of spring and summer planting in the riverside bank garden. Mark Porter, manager at The Garden Park, has a wide selection of favourite plants from The Devon Scene garden on sale for you to include in your garden, including rhododendrons, hawthorn trees and bluebells. Native trees are ideal for larger gardens, he explains, while shrubs can be easily grown widely throughout the UK and bulbs will work well in a pot or container. Mark says: “Here at The Garden

This garden is a sun-drenched gem from in the heart of summer Park, our team members are always happy to help with suggestions, so please do ask if you would like some tips on what would grow well in your particular garden.” The Devon Scene show garden is sponsored by The Western Morning News. Friendly manor will impress Friary Manor has stood for 300 years in beautiful secluded gardens on the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall. Formerly a vicarage, in recent years it has been a hotel and a popular wedding venue. Visitors here can enjoy a cream tea while watching the birds and wildlife among the three acres of grounds. It is a short stroll down to the sea to admire the quiet, secluded beaches, fabulous scenery and spectacular walks of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For the past 11 years, the property has been home to four generations of the same family who have lovingly nurtured the manor house and its grounds. The property is now for sale, with seven bedrooms, a separate two-bed-

room annexe, a two-bedroom detached bungalow, pictured below, and a dining room which seats up to 50 people. “It is has been a beautiful family home for us all to both live and work,” says current owner Jan. “Friary Manor has not only played a special part in our lives but also in the lives of all those who have stayed here, celebrated their marriage, a special occasion, birthday, anniversary, or even attended one of our croquet parties here. “Everyone says they feel as if the manor house embraces them as soon as they walk in. They feel so comfortable in this lovely atmosphere.” Jan’s husband Vic adds: “Visitors here can walk over to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, take the

foot ferry over to Plymouth, or simply relax in the lounge, enjoying the peace, and quiet and the chance to spot the odd woodpecker, or maybe two.” This beautiful Grade II listed period country house is run as a hotel at the moment, and holds a licence to perform marriages. Alternatively, it could once again be used as a traditional, characterful family home. Friary Manor is for sale for £1 million. Key to successful Natalie Blachford talks to the owner of a thriving lettings business about her top tips for designing an attractive and successful holiday home Holiday property owner Annie Hall runs a thriving lettings business in the heart of Devon, where she lives on site. She made the move from Hampshire to set up her holiday let business and is happy to share some of her top tips for designing a beautiful and successful holiday home. “I was absolutely terrified to start with,” Annie says. “I’d just gone through a divorce, I needed to be able to support my children but I didn’t want to be working crazy hours, so I decided to take a risk on starting my own business.” When I meet Annie at her home, it was clear that the country lifestyle suits her – she looks relaxed as she pulls a batch of homemade brownies from the oven for the guests due to arrive later that day and puts the finishing touches to a basket of local produce to welcome them. Annie, who previously worked for high-end jewellers Boodles and ran her own design business, sold her house in Hampshire in 2012 and moved to Lower Chaddlehanger, three miles outside of Tavistock, choosing the area for the beauty of Dartmoor and its tranquillity. For anyone thinking about letting a holiday home, choosing the right property in the right location is key. Annie knew from the start what she

was looking for, and as soon as she saw Lower Chaddlehanger House and the cottage, annexe and barn that came with it, her mind was made up. “I did a lot of research into what would let well, and for me being able to spread the bookings throughout

You have to work to the style of the house, look at the bones of the property the year rather than just relying on the peak season was key. “For that reason Lower Chaddlehanger seemed ideal – it had a twobedroom cottage that would be great for family holidays, as well as two properties that could be converted

into one-bedroom lets that would appeal to couples out of season too.” Annie admits that when she first moved in she “didn’t have the first clue” about holiday letting, so she contacted Jacqui Gulliford at holiday lettings agency Classic Cottages for advice on bringing the properties to market. The pair immediately clicked, and have worked closely to-

This high-specification, four-bedroomed detached house has breathtaking views of the Tamar. On a private road close to a sailing club, it would make an excellent holiday home. I anticipate it achieving £20,000 to £21,000 if let for 30 to 35 weeks. Agents: Chartsedge, Exeter, 01392 832446, www.chartsedge.co.uk

8 Saxon Maybank, near Sherborne, Dorset, £170,000

Set in 2.9 acres of countryside, this pet-friendly, eco-designed holiday lodge has outstanding views. The price includes furnishings and hot tub. Over a 30 week season, it could generate £6,000 to £8,000. Holiday property owner Annie Hall aims to create a fabulous space and to make her guests feel special

Ask the experts Your holiday let questions answered Q. We used to let our home every summer for holidays 20 years ago, and we’re considering doing so again. Has the market changed significantly? – MB, Exeter A. Gaby Wakley, property manager for Helpful Holidays, says: In the past 20 years we’ve seen a huge increase in the expectations of our guests. The demand now is for upmarket, quality properties of all shapes, sizes and ages, in a wide range of locations. Guests increasingly expect a high ratio of bathrooms to bedrooms, efficient kitchens, woodburners and parking. The provision of internet access and wifi also factor into a property’s success. The market has become increasingly competitive and there’s also been a huge shift in the way people book their holidays. More than 50% of our bookings at Helpful Holidays are now made online. The internet allows guests to search easily and book at the last minute, so it is important to be at the top of search engine pages. We work continuously to maintain our lead in the search rankings and ensure plentiful bookings.

As well as a warm welcome, Annie Hall presents guests at Lower Chaddlehanger with a basket of local produce gether since to turn the three properties into highly desirable holiday homes. Property manager Jacqui says that Annie’s flair for design has helped her achieve her vision for creating luxurious properties that stand out from the crowd. Taking a look around the three properties, you can see how much effort has gone into the styling and decoration to create homes which are contemporary, unique and that guests will love. So what would be her top tips for anyone looking to refurbish a property themselves? “Firstly, you have to work to the style of the house, look at the bones of the property, Annie explains. “All three of mine are completely different in space and lighting, and that dictates what you can do with them. “Secondly, I would say you need to have two or three features in the house that are really ‘wow’. “In the Hay Barn I’ve used a Cole & Son wallpaper in the kitchen that was very expensive, but it really looks incredible. “Similarly, in Medlar Cottage I wanted to use a Celia Birtwell fabric that had been discontinued – I had to

pay a small fortune to have it specially made, but it’s worth it. I ask Annie whether there are any areas where money can be saved, and for her the answer was restoring old family furniture and expert online sales shopping. “I have several items in the properties which are either from my old house or from my mother’s house. For example, I took my mother’s old Chesterfield sofa and recovered it in white leather – it’s a bold choice but it works well and looks great in photos. I also have a 17th century French oak carving above one of the beds in Medlar Cottage, which is something else I restored – if you have time and are willing to put the work in you can make some great savings.

“When it comes to sourcing items, you can find some great deals online, particularly with things like light fittings. A Heathfield lamp that would normally cost ÂŁ400 you might be able to get at the online discount site Achica.com for 70% off.â€? With so much competition in the holiday lettings market, making yours stand out is essential for success. Running her three properties is a full-time business for Annie, and she says you have to be willing to put the time and effort into making it work. “Customers want beautiful, inspiring properties which are like a home from home. You have to take the time to get the design right so the properties will jump off the page and attract guests. “I’m lucky to have turned my passion for design into my job and the time and effort I’ve put in has been rewarded with excellent bookings for all three properties. If you can create a fabulous space and make guests feel special it will reap rewards when they come back year after year.â€? Medlar Cottage, the Wool Shed and the Hay Barn are all available for long and short breaks and can be booked by visiting www.classic.co.uk or calling 01326 555555.

SATURDAY MAY 3 2014

Q. Do you recommend carpet, wood or laminate for the living room of a holiday let? – NP, Dartmouth A. Melanie Cassidy, property manager for Helpful Holidays, says: Generally, we recommend floor coverings should be comfy and warm. If you’re choosing carpet, go for a plain one which should be hardwearing, easily cleaned and ScotchGuarded. If you choose tiles or wood the floor should be well insulated. Scatter rugs protect areas with excessive wear and can

‘soften’ hard flooring, especially beside beds or sofas. Make sure rugs are securely fixed to the floor and the edges don’t curl. On polished wood or tiled floors they will need anti-slip mats under them. Kitchen and bathroom floors should be easily washable. Tiles or high-quality vinyl are practical in these areas. Your choice for a living area will be guided by your cottage location and who will be using it. Hard, easily cleanable floors are advisable if you’re accommodating walkers, scratchresistant if pets are allowed or if floors are used by sandy feet from the beach. Modern floor coverings such as Amtico offer the best of both worlds with a durable, moisture, stain and scratch resistant finish and ‘natural look’ finishes such as marble or timber.

Q. Do we need a separate bank account for the income from our holiday let property? – ND, Falmouth A. Gill Nicholls, property manager for Helpful Holidays, says: The best person for financial advice is your accountant. However, in general terms, putting your income from your holiday home in your current account is acceptable, but it might not be the best place for it. It is absolutely essential to keep an accurate account of income and expenditure relating to your holiday property. All income has to be declared to the Inland Revenue, hence the need for tidy, accurate accounts, so keeping such income in a designated account with a separate cheque book could be easier to manage. If you have other income taxed on a PAYE basis, keeping the monies separate helps avoid confusion. If you have a question for our holiday home experts, please send it via email to: wmnproperty@ westernmorningnews.co.uk

From little acorns Caroline Doughty reveals the joy of oak-framed buildings As the Westcountry gears up for another tourist season and its annual invasion of visitors, there will be plenty among them who indulge in an annual fantasy of what it would be to live here year-round. Life could be like one long holiday… And so it has been described by one happy customer of Devon-based homes company, Carpenter Oak. The company, which has been going for more than 20 years, is based just outside Totnes in the South Hams. Led by director Stuart Voaden, Carpenter Oak builds structural timber framed buildings – everything from garden cabins, extensions and ‘micro homes’ to houses and large public buildings. And business has been so good in Devon that the company decided to open a new production yard in Lelant, West Cornwall, last month. Initially employing two full-time structural carpenters and a frame designer based in Falmouth, Stuart Voaden says it is conceivable that staff numbers could double in the first year. “We are already looking for a third carpenter and we will probably need another before too long. We’d like to find someone local who is interested in learning these age-old skills and the craft of structural framing.” Carpenter Oak Cornwall’s first man in is Tim Simpson, 34, who grew up in Carbis Bay and had been working at the company’s Devon yard for seven years. He and partner Katie, together with their children, Holly and Jack, were keen to move back to Cornwall to be nearer Tim’s family. Now settled back in St Ives, Tim says the move is, “Everything I could have imagined. I’m so proud to be coming back here with these skills, and introducing them to

people who didn’t even know timber framing existed. I’m really excited at the prospect of helping create our beautiful buildings here in Cornwall.” And he’s not just surrounded by family, but by old friends too. Fellow staffer Ben Trevorrow, 35, grew up in Zennor. He is a year older than Tim, attended the same school and played for the same rugby club. Ben left for

‘We believe our designs genuinely enhance the beauty of this special area we live in’ Cardiff University and then years of travelling followed while he played semi-professional rugby. Now he and wife Steph, a Canadian teacher, have two children and are thrilled to be back in the South West. “My dad was a fisherman fishing out of St Ives – we go back a long way in Cornwall,” says Ben. “I knew what a great place this is to grow up and I wanted it for my boys so we decided it was time to come back,” said Ben, clearly enjoying the good life as we

met on Carbis Bay beach and drank coffee while the boys dug holes in the sand. Ollie will start school in Carbis Bay in September and he and his little brother Jasper go to nursery in St Ives. Ben had been working as a carpenter in Canada but is a newcomer to traditional mortice and tenon joinery as used by Carpenter Oak. “Tim’s a great teacher but it’s going to be a steep learning curve for me,” he says. And he won’t necessarily be working just with oak. Carpenter Oak also use Douglas fir with stainless steel bracing for a contemporary feel and a lighter aesthetic than a traditional

Home truths by Paula Nicholls Interior design expert

Carpenter Oak‘s structural timber-framed buildings include everything from extensions ‘micro homes’ and a music studio, below, to houses and large public buildings

barn-style oak frame. “We know that for people planning to build from scratch, or adding an extension to an existing property, getting planning permission can be tricky and time consuming,” says Stuart. “The quality of our frames, the natural materials we use and the traditional building methods we employ do make it easier to navigate the planning process. We believe our designs genuinely enhance the beauty of this special area we live in.” What is more, today’s wooden-

framed buildings can be seamlessly integrated with the most modern energy-efficient technology, from passive solar heating technology to heat transfer methods – so you could build yourself a home that costs nothing to heat. The only drawback to these beautiful buildings is that your guests may never want to leave. So be warned – if you invite your friends and family to stay in one, they may find it hard to go home. I’m all out of sorts. I’ve lost a day. I think it was Monday or was it Sunday? I’m not good with all these bank holidays – we’ve only just had Easter, now there are another two on their way. In fact, I’m boringly into routine, considering I work as a creative type. Get up 7.15am. Feed cats. Make pot of coffee. Watch Everybody Loves Raymond, think “seen this” and laugh anyway. Do ablutions. Go up to office to book in parcel carriers, print labels and then off to the warehouse. Take dog for a walk. Same the next day. Then on Saturday, I lie in genteel languor waiting for the results of the previous night’s libations to dissipate and read any newspapers I can lay my trembling hands on. Sunday get up, walk the dog and it is all pretty similar to weekdays, with less work and more papers. It’s hell on the cutting edge of design. Gone are the days of careless abandon, waking late, going out two nights in a row – perish the thought! So when I get a couple of extra days of unemployment I’m off kilter. But I do find that having a good walk or a cream tea can make amends. Or wine. Wine can take the edge off the chaos that my internal calendar is now experiencing. What’s more, we are frighteningly busy at the moment. Moving house. Moving the business. Big orders coming in and a week’s work in London. At first I was afraid (I was petrified). Then I thought “Well, organise yourself girl. You can do it.” So I bought folders of varied hue and I am: Folder Women. Now, at any point, I can be asked: “Where will you be at 9am next Thursday?” I refer to my blue folder and find I will be picking up keys to new office and warehouse. We have a folder for moving house. A folder for my son to go to university. A folder for the pets. It’s brilliant, but beware, once you start you can’t stop, I’m going to prepare a folder for my folders and Ryman’s are doing three for two at the moment so there could be trouble ahead. As mentioned in previous articles, I love my modern technology, and

am so delighted to be reunited with my beloved iPad with its twinkly lights and sleek slimness. But you can’t beat a good old-fashioned folder. I knew a girl whose father had a folder on all his family’s health. Even when they had left home he would regularly call them for an update on their ailments. His reasoning that in the event of sudden ill health he could supply the doctors with full details of their medical history. He had a whole separate folder dedicated to his nose, sinus problems, enlarged pores and potential melanomas. He died of old age, well into his 90s and it was definitely not nose-related.

I love my iPad with its twinkly lights... But you can’t beat a good old-fashioned folder As I finish writing this, we’ve just been given a date for the house move. Quick as a flash it’s in my diary and dates folder with a crossreference to the house moving folder. Ultimately, my iPad is not man enough for this task. Technology, for me, is for watching Frasier reruns and finding videos of kittens and puppies doing cute things. Same for everyone, probably. This is what Becky Sheaves discovers a remarkable property with fabulous facilities in East Devon If you are wondering what £7 million can buy you in the Westcountry these days, then have a look at this remarkable property that has just been launched on to the property market near the village of Whimple in East Devon. Built by a local businessman on the site of a former farmhouse, The White House has the sort of facilities that a top-class hotel or sports complex would envy. “I suppose I did get a little carried away,” admits the current owner, who has lived at the property for 22 years, but redeveloped the whole 30 acre site almost from scratch in Follow Becky on twitter @BeckySheavesWMN

recent years. “The excitement and the challenge of building something to such a high standard was really enjoyable.” The planning process took eight years and the build itself a further five. The end result is a house whose facilities are simply breathtaking. Where to start? Well how about in the home office, whose interior window looks onto a car showroom that is as glamorous than anything on offer in London’s Park Lane. The idea is, you park your favourite car onto the bespoke turntable, then you can watch it rotating and see it from every angle as you work, explains the vendor. Boys’ toys aside, there are certainly plenty of places to relax and

63

enjoy family life at the property, from the interior climbing wall for the children to the outdoor Wimbledon-standard grass tennis courts. In all, the accommodation extends to 27,000 sq feet, the vendor tells me. The house is set in nearly 30 acres of land complete with a nine-hole golf course, lakes, helipad and hangar. The ground-floor reception rooms include a magnificent drawing room and sitting room either side of the grand reception hall. A large family room connects through to the superb kitchen/breakfast room which is nearly 90ft long. There is also a games room, an indoor swimming pool and a unique circular dining room. “We had automatically-opening

curved doors especially made for the dining room,” says the vendor. The lower-ground floor is home to a luxurious indoor cinema, glamorous bar and entertainment suite. In all, there are a total of six bedroom suites in the main house. And forget twin basins - the master bedroom has twin bathrooms. There is even a proper indoor shooting range running the length of the property. So who buys a house like this? “I can see The White House appealing to a Russian buyer who is based in London and wants a peaceful weekend home. There aren’t many people in the South West looking for a property on this scale,” says the vendor. But just on the off chance that a Western Morning News reader might have that sort of cash to spare, here are the pictures from the brochure. After all, we can but dream… The White House is for sale with Knight Frank, Exeter for offers over £7 million. Call 01392 423111 or visit www.knightfrank.co.uk for details
