Partnership provides training for people aiming for chosen careers Antony Whittaker knew from an early age that working on vehicles was what he wanted to do. So he grabbed his future with both hands by securing a Level 2 Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship at Dales Motors in Summercourt with Truro and Penwith College. The hands on learning that an Apprenticeship programme provides is perfect for Antony. “The best bit about my Apprenticeship is being able to spend most of my time in the workshop whether this is at work or training in the college, plus time flies when you’re busy fixing a car,” he says. Antony believes the programme, alongside the support of his employer has improved his knowledge and confidence in working with vehicles, whilst offering him a trade to support his future. Andrew Pidgeon has seen his career prospects soar since starting the Level 3 Marketing Apprenticeship with Truro and Penwith College. “Before starting the Apprenticeship I could never have dreamed that I would now be in a full time post,” he says. “I have been given new energy and ambition by the Apprenticeship. My knowledge and skillset has developed enormously and has given me the confidence to move to a new country, explore and continue my career journey amongst fresh experiences.” Though already having secured a desirable job as a result of his Apprenticeship, Andrew now intends to progress his career by moving to New Zealand, experiencing the world of Marketing in a new country. One of the South West’s biggest names in hospitality, St Austell Brewery, continues to value recruitment through Apprenticeships as essential to its future. They recently embarked on a new partnership with Truro and Penwith College, offering 30 Apprenticeship opportunities in Professional Cookery and Front of House

An apprenticeship can open doors you didn’t even realise existed Frameworks in early 2015. Adam Luck, estate director at St Austell Brewery, said: “People are at the heart of our business and through Apprenticeships we find enthusiastic and committed individuals to start their career here. Apprenticeships offer us long term recruitment solutions and the right individuals can progress in their career.” The new Apprenticeships are part of a growing partnership between St Austell Brewery and Truro and Penwith College to provide careers and

training within the hospitality sector that will enable people to launch their careers. Aarron Yates’ appetite to develop new skills and Eden Project’s progressive and supportive culture made him the perfect candidate for an Apprenticeship. After completing the Advanced Apprenticeship in Management with Truro and Penwith College Aarron is now a key member of Eden’s highly successful hospitality team. Aarron believed the Apprenticeship was a great option: “I couldn’t

recommend the management training more. It doesn’t just change your work ethic but changes you as a person. The skills that I learnt from the course have been incredible and gives you a real boost in confidence and morale. It makes you understand just what lengths you have to go to be a professional organisation and to deliver world class service, which we aim to do here at Eden.” For all our latest Apprenticeship vacancies visit: http://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/ business/apprenticeships

Hotel group is ‘growing’ its own staff The Brend Hotel Group has become the first hotel company in the South West to launch its own Apprenticeship Academy. The group, which has eleven luxury hotels throughout Devon and Cornwall, has been offering vocational training to staff since 2004. Formal apprenticeships followed but now, instead of apprentices attending local colleges, all training will initially take place at the Brend’s flagship Saunton Sands Hotel. There are currently 60 apprentices on the scheme learning a variety of skills connected with work across the hotel industry including front of house, bar, waiting, kitchen, administration, housekeeping, concierge and portering. “This is a very positive development for the company,” said Andrew Mosedale, Brend’s Group HR manager and the new academy principal. “We have spent the last ten years building up expertise and are delighted to be taking

this next step forward and introducing our own academy.” Director Peter Brend Senior said apprenticeships had proved a very important way of ‘growing your own’ staff. “We are a family company that values its employees and encourages them to stay longter m,” he said. “Apprenticeships are an excellent way of developing and enhancing skill levels and establishing our own academy means we can offer the very best Level Two and Three training available in situ. Our aim is to become a beacon of industry excellence in all senses of the term.” HIT Training, a leading specialist training and apprenticeship provider for the UK’s hospitality, hotel and catering industry, will be responsible for providing expert training assessors and sourcing funding for eligible learners. “The Brend Hotel Group initiative is blazing a trail in the South West and we’re very pleased to be working with them,” said HIT’s managing

Way to increase your potential for employment

Alexis Bowater presents James Eason with his Level 2 certificate director Jill Whittaker. “Well trained, competent staff are a valuable asset and can help a business perform well by delivering improved efficiency, better customer service and reduced staff tur nover.” There were about 70 guests at the launch including Councillor Brian Greenslade, Leader of North Devon Council, award-winning journalist and TV presenter Alexis Bowater who performed the official opening, HIT Training chief

executive officer Jill Whittaker and Mary Graves, employment services manager at The National Apprenticeship Service. Mary Graves said: “This is a great example of increasing the scope and impact of apprenticeships in the Group. Apprenticeships are helping the future by providing the skills and proficiencies needed by the business both for new recruits and existing staff. It has been a pleasure to support The Brend Hotel Group in the

evolution of its apprenticeship programme and in establishing the Academy.” After cutting a special cake in honour of the occasion, Alexis Bowater presented certificates to a number of apprentices who have just completed their training. The Brend Hotel Group is currently recruiting new apprentices. For more information, call Andrew Mosedale on 01271 372166 or email him at am@ brendhotels.com

Opting for an Apprenticeship programme can increase the possibility of securing future employment through training with innovative growing businesses in areas of a current skills deficit. Internationally recognised company WISKA, specialising in the development and production of Cable Accessory Systems, maritime lighting, electrical equipment and marine CCTV, believes that identifying and addressing their skills gap has driven their growth. Managing director, Will Rich, says: “Our employees are key to the development of our business and training is essential to give them the skills required to achieve this.” Working closely with Truro and Penwith College’s Business Development Team, WISKA UK has taken both the financial and time pressures out of filling their skills gaps. Similarly, Redruth based company Mi-Generation highlighted the national shortage of skilled biomass engineers in the UK. Working in partnership with Mi-Generation throughout the Apprenticeship process, Truro and Penwith College assisted in recruiting six enthusiastic new Apprentices to enhance their team and preserve the future of this industry.

Brend Training Academy Do you have what it takes to become an apprentice with the South West’s leading hotel group? Brend Hotels are offering an exclusive opportunity to all age groups to join our team as an apprentice and receive training & qualifications of the highest standard in the hospitality sector. The apprenticeship will develop your skills in job specific key areas such as customer service and food hygiene. Short listed applicants will be invited to attend an interview.

WESTERN MORNING NEWS THURSDAY MARCH 12 2015 APPRENTICESHIP WEEK 3

MP sees first hand the benefits brought by apprenticeships To tie in with the start of National Apprenticeship Week (March 9-13) MP for St Austell and Newquay, Stephen Gilbert visited Brannel School in St Stephen on Monday to go back to the shop floor and learn firsthand what it’s like to be an apprentice. Met by performing arts apprentice Cory Cadwallader and Brannel’s School Business and Enterprise Manager Elizabeth Fletcher, the MP was able to find out about Cory’s role at the school and how important it is, why the school employs apprentices and what benefits they bring to their company. “It’s absolutely key to make sure that young people from our community are able to get the skills and confidence they need to meet their aspirations and thrive in the modern workplace,” said Mr Gilbert. “The fantastic thing about apprenticeships in the last five years is that they have gone up by a factor of five. Just in this constituency alone in 2010 there were 1,000 apprenticeship vacancies and now there

are 5,000 each year. “It’s providing opportunities for people to earn and learn at the same time and really transform the expectations and ambitions of the people in our community,” he said. “Having the opportunity to do what you want to do in life and being able to excel at your

‘It’s providing opportunities to earn and learn’ Stephen Gilbert MP skills and interests is important. For too long we have put a huge emphasis on people going down the more traditional academic routes and they haven’t always worked out the best for individuals.” Official Government figures show that The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) is the largest provider of apprenticeships in the South West region. TCCG, which incorporates

Duchy College, Cornwall College Business and Falmouth Marine School, supported more than 600 people aged 16-18 during 2013 and 2014; a 20% increase on the previous 12 months, placing it in the top 10 of further education colleges nationally who offer workbased learning. Brannel School currently has three apprentices in post – Robbie Dee, Business Administration, Level 2 and Andrew Gasiorowski, IT Network, Level 3, both at TCCG and Cory Cadwallader, Performing Arts, Level 2 is at City College Plymouth. The school’s Business and Enterprise Manager, Elizabeth Fletcher, said: “Brannel School started an apprentice programme with the aim of giving deserving young people from a deprived background a chance in life. “We want to give an opportunity to get a ‘foot on the careers ladder’ for local young people who are able to demonstrate the skills and qualities we would look for in an employ-

MP for St Austell and Newquay, Stephen Gilbert with TCCG Apprentice Cory Cadwallader ee; but who have not been successful in finding employment. “Young people seeking apprenticeship from our local community are often lacking in communication skills and may not present themselves well at interview,” she said. “However, at Brannel we use our apprenticeship programme as an opportunity to look beyond this; to identify young people with a clear work ethic and skills which are waiting to be developed in the right environment and with the right encouragement. “Our mission is to spend 12 months preparing a young apprentice for the world of work

and – in short – give them a fighting chance to turn their future around.” Cory, 19, said: “I started my apprenticeship last September and I really enjoy it because it covers the technical side of performing arts, which is something I love. “The benefit of doing an apprenticeship is that you’re doing the work hands-on rather than just learning the theory and you get to see how things work rather than learning about them, which makes it stick in your head more,” said Cory. Hiring an apprentice can help a business to grow their own talent by developing a mo-

tivated, skilled and qualified workforce. Tessa Claridge, Director of Young People at TCCG, added: “An apprenticeship is a way for young people and adult learners to earn while they learn in a real job, gaining a real qualification and a real future.” Find out about the range of apprenticeships available at Cornwall College and Duchy College. Call 0845 22 32 567 or visit www.cornwall.ac.uk. Or pop along to one of the Information Events on Saturday, from 10am-noon at the Camborne, Newquay, Saltash, St Austell and Falmouth Marine School campuses.

Don’t want to go to university? If you are not entirely sure that university is the right route for you, Apprenticeships are a fantastic alternative to start you on the path to your dream career. Successful former apprentices include fashion designer Alexander McQueen, Formula One team principal Ross Brawn and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver! Apprenticeships offer the opportunity for individuals to progress in their chosen area by gaining nationally recognised qualifications, as well as valuable experience working in a business environment and gaining that all important ‘foot in the door.’ Split into three levels, Intermediate, Advanced – which is equivalent to 2 A Levels – and Higher – which can extend to qualifications at Degree or Masters level, Apprenticeships cover 170 industries and 1,500 job roles in a range of sectors. Working with Tom Raffield Design, Construction apprentice Charlie Brogden is developing unique skills to use steam bending to create spectacular and ecologically sound, innovative furniture. Charlie said “I wasn’t looking for an Apprenticeship but now I wouldn’t want to do it any other way. I think Apprenticeships should be advertised better in schools - it’s sad that everyone is driven down the path of university. You have to be motivated and quite practical but in many ways Apprenticeships are better and more important than university these days. I’m being paid to learn which is perfect - a lot of my friends will have massive debts and I won’t have that. It’s the best of both worlds.”
