Rosie is cooking up a career as chef

Rosie Dunningham, aged 22, (pictured above) has recently graduated from the Ashburton Chefs Academy after achieving a Certificate in Professional Cookery. Here she talks about her motivation for taking the course and what she hopes to do next. “Cooking became a huge passion during my first year of university, where I had to learn to cook myself in order to eat well! “I discovered a love of baking, so started to write a baking blog that I still keep up now. “I love cooking meals for friends and family, especially anything Middle Eastern from Ottolenghi, and after everyone saying how I should pursue food properly and make a career out of it, I decided they were right. “I chose to do the course at the Ashburton Cookery School as it really appealed to me due to its professionalism and the fact that I could fit it in during a break from university. “It proved to be absolutely

fantastic. Everything in the kitchen is super modern, shiny and state of the art. I can’t express enough how impressed I was with the facilities. “The chef tutors were incredible and truly made the

course special; it was honestly the best thing I’ve ever done. It even enabled me to get my first cooking job, which was amazing. I feel ready to get a job in a kitchen after I’ve completed my degree. “After the course I signed up

with a number of catering job agencies and I and another girl from the course secured a two-week job as private chefs for a family in their holiday home in St Tropez. We prepared breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and a

two-course dinner every day for a family of five, with five guests, and one night we did a dinner party for 28 people. Before Ashburton I would never have thought I was capable of doing something like that.

“My plan is to try and get a job as a crew chef on a yacht and I might try and do some ski chalet chef work, or even look for an apprenticeship in a restaurant. My goal is to work in a fine dining establishment one day!”

Perfect new term sees pupils thrive

Students empowered to develop

Perrott Hill has had a fabulous start to the Summer Term and is celebrating recent success and opportunity across its age range. Year 7 pupils came third in the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation Global Art and Poetry competition and their cross curricular art and English project was exhibited in the Natural History Museum. The school has just introduced a fantastic parent and 03s music group and the latest addition to its Forest School, a new roundhouse, is a popular addition to its outside space. At the very top of the school, Year 8s have gained an impressive haul of awards to their senior schools. Fifteen of the 24 Year 8s have achieved academic, art, drama, sports and all-rounder awards and scholarships to schools including Blundell’s, Canford, King’s College Taunton, Leweston, Millfield, Queen’s College Taunton, Sherborne Girls, Sherborne, Taunton School and Wellington. Thus, a careful balance of endeavour, aspiration and a childhood inspired by nature and a magical sense of place continue to thrive at Perrott Hill. Plans are underway to create a purpose-built Music School over the summer.

The core guiding principle that lies at the heart of everything South Dartmoor Community College does is to encourage and develop personal responsibility among all members of its community. It believes in empowering students to take control of their own learning and their own lives. South Dartmoor has a welldeserved reputation as one of Devon’s leading schools. It is extremely proud of the education and opportunities it provides. With an academic offer that has seen four consecutive years of the best exam outcomes in the school’s history, the journey together starts with an extensive transition programme. There is a specialist focus on sport – from a vast extra-curricular programme to its elite sports academy. It is the only SW College in partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation and it is particularly proud of its girls’ cricket team which has made two National Finals in two years; and the hockey team, who were national indoor champions. The Performing Arts are central to college life, with students committed to many ensembles and performances.

Environment that encourages pupils to excel Coombeshead Academy continues to develop young people who show positive attitudes to learning, to excel both academically and in the wide variety of enrichment opportunities offered by the school. The Academy also prides itself on being at the heart of the community, taking the lead on com-

munity projects, working with local businesses and contributing to both local and national charities on fundraising events. 2015 was a landmark year for the Academy as it moved itself a step closer to being an ‘outstanding’ school, rated by Ofsted as a ‘good school with

outstanding features’. At Teign, it is the attention to students as individuals, which ensures they leave as successful, confident young adults. Students are challenged in an environment where high achievement is recognised and celebrated. Equally, all students are supported by remov-

ing barriers to learning to achieve their goals. Teign School is proud of the comprehensive nature of the community it serves. To achieve these aims, it works in partnership with parents, other schools and businesses. Visit and see first-hand the work that the school does.

Rocket seeds from outer space in pupils’ down-to-earth study The RHS Campaign for School Gardening has partnered with the UK Space Agency to embark on an ‘out of this world’ educational project. St Joseph’s School was lucky enough to be selected to take part in this exciting experiment and Year 4 pupils have now planted the seeds. The project, Rocket Science, gives children the chance to learn how science in space contributes to our knowledge of life on earth. In September two kilograms of rocket seeds took off from Florida bound for the International Space Station as part of British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s six-month Principia mission. After several months , the seeds were sent back to Earth. They were packaged up with identical seeds that have stayed on earth. Participating schools each received two packets of 100 seeds to grow and compare. Pupils are able to see what growing plants in space can teach us about life on Earth and if we can sustain

life in space through food production. The project is aimed at inspiring pupils to think scientifically and helping

them to see the potential of future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) and Horticulture.

Degrees to match career aspirations Degree apprenticeships are a Government initiative which enables people to complete a degree closely matched to their current job and career aspirations. And if you want to use this scheme to enhance your qualifications and future prospects, without taking time away from work, you can now do so with Plymouth University. From September, the university will be running two programmes (Chartered Manager and Digital and Technology Solutions) after the Government recognised it had expertise that could benefit local companies and their employees. The aim is to enhance skill levels in management and IT, and will be working with employers to ensure their workforce receives training which meets their precise business needs. Like all apprentices, all those enrolled on the programmes will be paid a salary and they will typically split their time between college and university and the workplace. And as well as learning while they work, there will be no costs for the students with tuition fees being shared by the Gover nment and employers. Students on the Chartered Manager programme – being run by the Plymouth Business School – will study for a BSc (Hons) Professional Management Practice and will learn skills including team leadership, project management, business finance, sales and marketing. Those on the Digital and Technology Solutions degrees will have opportunities in four subject areas, cyber security, IT consultancy, software engineering and network engineering. These programmes are being led by the University’s School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics in conjunction with City College Plymouth, Petroc, Bridgwater College and South Devon College.

For sport and academic excellence this is a career winner For 14 to 16-year-olds looking for a career in Sport, or for those who want to combine different career aspirations with their own sporting ambitions, the new, state-funded Plymouth Studio School offers a unique range of opportunities for the next generation of athletes to go further and achieve more. Based on campus at the University of St Mark & St John, the school will move into its

new £4.2 million building this autumn. Facilities will include a state-of-the-art High Performance Sport Centre complete with world-class monitoring and training equipment, a laser shooting range for modern pentathlon training and Olympic lifting platfor ms. It’s the school’s mix of Olympic and Commonwealth level coaches – including

swimmer Antony James – innovative approach to sports performance, led by Olympic sports psychologist, Jon Rhodes, and its unique approach to teaching and learning which is attracting students looking for academic and sporting excellence. The school offers four educational routes including sports performance, sports development & coaching and sports management.

Each route is designed around a combination of GCSEs, A levels & BTECs (including the Extended Diploma in Sport) and also includes work placement and mentoring opportunities. They are designed to help students forge careers as professional athletes, coaches, sport therapists and scientists, or to manage major sports and challenge events. For those opting for the

sports performance route, a specifically designed Sports Performance Programme is available. For those who want to pursue careers as doctors, lawyers, pilots, business leaders and entrepreneurs, the school’s professional route gives them an opportunity to study up to four A levels. Limited places for Year 10 or Year 12 entry in September 2016 are available.

try is so vital. UTC Plymouth is a science and engineering specialist college for 14-19 years olds. It aims to educate and train the most technically minded students in the region so they can progress into higher education or straight into employment. With its first set of students leaving last summer after the college opened its doors in

2013, it celebrated an overall progression rate of 96%. That means only 4% of the year group didn’t either enter higher education, employment or secure an apprenticeship. Just like other schools, UTC Plymouth teaches traditional core subjects. However what makes it different is it places a greater emphasis on STEM subjects

Heading in the right direction

Education for a range of talents

September 2016 brings exciting times for Trinity School, Teignmouth, with the appointment of new Head, Lawrence Coen, who has a very clear direction for Trinity. “Education should enable every child to develop in as many arenas as possible and be prepared for the challenges that a rapidly changing word will hold for them,” he says. “Embracing the world that we are preparing young people for is crucial and this needs to be reflected in the classroom and wider school. “My belief that young people need to be regularly challenged and encouraged to have an open mind so that they can improve and make a more positive contribution to society,” says Mr Coen. “The educational needs of students in the 21st century extend beyond memorising facts to facing challenge, dealing with ‘obstacles’, innovation and effective contribution to a team.”

Exeter Cathedral School is a leading independent day and boarding Prep School for girls and boys aged 2½ to13. Founded in the 12th century as a choir school, ECS now educates approximately 280 pupils. 36 of these are the boy and girl Choristers of Exeter Cathedral, who continue the centuries-old pattern of leading the daily sung worship in the Cathedral. Nowadays, it offers a fullyrounded Prep School education to pupils from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of talents and interests, whether they be sporting, academic, artistic or musical. The school has a maximum class size of 18, allowing the teachers to really know each and every pupil as an individual. It has a proven track record of securing places and scholarships (academic, art, music, performing arts, sport) to a range of leading senior schools.
