Plenary Sessions
The National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) achieved IGNITION on December 5th, 2022. A star was literally created here on earth. This is a historical event that can be compared to man setting foot on the moon. Ignition is considered a net energy gain output when compared to the input laser energy on target. You can read more on ignition here
We are fortunate to have as one of our Opening Plenary speakers, Dr. Tammy Ma who has just been named as Lead for the Inertial Fusion Energy Initiative at LLNL. Dr. Ma will present, “Creating a Star on Earth, Ignition, and Where Lasers are Taking Us in the Future of Fusion Energy.”
This talk on its own would be a reason not to miss ILSC 2023, but we have more. Preceding Dr. Ma in the Opening Plenary, Dr. Rebecca Vincelette of Medtronic will speak on, “Magnetic Resonance Guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (MRg-LITT)”.
Going “Beyond” and closing out the conference, Dr. Ramona Gaza from NASA-Johnson Space Center will present, “Challenges of Laser Safety for Space Exploration in Low Earth Orbit and Beyond”. To know where we are going, we must understand our past, and Dr. Thomas Garrison from the University of Texas at Austin will present, “Studying the 4th Century in the 21st Century: Lidar in Maya Archaeology”.
Just one of these talks would be a must-see keynote, and they are just the bookends to this four-day event!

Veronica Villalon University of California at San Francisco Medical Center
The Medical Practical Applications Seminar (MPAS) is an essential two-day conference for all professionals working with medical laser devices. This program is designed to meet the various educational needs of the Medical Laser Safety Officer along with that personnel working in operating rooms, surgical centers, aesthetic clinics, veterinary clinics, medical research labs, mobile laser companies, and medi-spas. Cognitive gaps do exist related to national governmental regulations, state statutes, and evidence-based practices regarding what is essential for a facility-based laser safety program. This conference is constructed to bring all attendees the most current safety regulations and practice standards.
