Welcome to Invercargill Southland’s innovative capital. Kia Ora, Greetings and Welcome to both the most southerly and most westerly city in New Zealand. They say that the further south you travel in New Zealand the more hospitable the people become and Invercargill is known far and wide as ‘the friendly city.’ Our locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction if you get lost or offer a tip or two about the best visitor spots and this guide is like a local you can carry in your back pocket. It has all the insider knowledge about our museum, stadium, aquatic centre and all the other recreational, cultural and sporting facilities we have built in this city. Naturally we are proud of our local facilities but life is about more than ‘bricks and mortar’ and what could be simpler than going for a walk. We want you to enjoy our relaxed lifestyle and this edition of the City Guide focuses on our wide network of short walks, picnic areas and cycle tracks. In fact we are lucky enough to have more parks per head of population than any other city. Despite our small population we have won numerous national and international accolades in a wide range of sporting codes. In the last Olympic Games five medal winners came from just one of our high schools and at the 2014 Commonwealth Games a third of the New Zealand cycling team were from Southland and all trained at our SIT Zero Fees Velodrome. Many of the visitors to our city arrive to support or take part in events such as the Burt Munro Challenge, the Tour of Southland and the North Cape to Bluff events. In fact, checking out Bluff is often high on our visitors ‘to do’ lists. Yes, I know that this may sound odd but one of our biggest visitor attractions is the signpost at the start of State Highway 1! I’m sure you will enjoy your stay in Invercargill and I wish you happy travelling wherever you may go.

Which brings us to our first tip - if you hear a local say ‘wee’ — they mean little or small! Confused? Don't worry, we've even put together a section on local lingo to help get you through, see page 14.

Invercargill Airport The Invercargill Airport is currently undergoing a comprehensive upgrade. This is expected to be completed around Christmas 2015 but in the meantime there are a few things to be aware of. Check with your accommodation provider for the latest changes. Maps with the latest developments are being sent to them on a regular basis so they can fill you in on what you need to know. Upon entering the airport zone, be mindful of construction workers and machinery operating within the airport boundaries. If you are walking, please follow pedestrian footpaths whenever possible and if you are driving, please keep to the speed limits indicated and follow the signage. To keep your upcoming flight arrangements stress-free, the airport company recommends allowing an extra 10 minutes when visiting the airport in case of construction, parking or roading changes. Family Friendly Invercargill has plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. And with many of our popular attractions being very affordable or even free, it’s clear to see why it’s known as the family friendly city. A great place to start exploring is the jewel of Invercargill’s centre, Queens Park. Several hours need to be put aside to make the most of this 81ha (200 acre) wonderland. The grand Feldwick Gates mark the main entrance to the park, inviting you to walk through the stunning Coronation Avenue lined with English Beech and Silver Birch trees. Once a grazing block for cattle, the transformed park now contains an animal reserve, ponds, a band rotunda, statues, a fantastic playground and waterpark. The park’s beautiful gardens and botanical attractions have something to offer all year round and for the more energetic, there is a popular 4km fitness trail complete with twenty exercise stations.

Culture hit

Museums, art galleries and architecture Invercargill's history, culture, heritage, architecture and art is bound to educate and impress even the most sophisticated of our visitors!

The Southland Museum and Art Gallery Niho O Te Taniwha Home to some of New Zealand’s most precious taonga (treasures) the Southland Museum and Art Gallery Niho O Te Taniwha has something to engage everyone. Housed in the iconic pyramid building, visitors can discover contemporary art alongside stories of our ancestors. Temporary exhibitions are complimented by long-term displays which explore aspects of southern lands, the people and the indigenous creatures of the south.

Civic Theatre One of the most significant historical buildings in Southland, the Civic Theatre was built in 1906 and underwent a $15.8million upgrade in 2005. The upgrade shone new light upon the Gothic style building, allowing it to be enjoyed by future generations. With no shortage of events being held at the theatre throughout the year your chances of being able to catch a live show are high. If you don’t have time for a performance make sure you take a moment to view the floodlit building at night, it is simply gorgeous.

St Mary’s Basilica Once described as “the prettiest church in Australasia”, St Mary’s Roman Catholic Basilica is an unmissable Invercargill landmark. Airline pilots are said to navigate their course in and out of the city by noting the cross on its highest point. Opened in 1905 and still just as stunning today, the building features many coloured glass windows including a rose window with an unusual angel design.

The origins of New Zealand According to MaĹ?ri legend Aotearoa or New Zealand was fished from the sea by the demigod Maui, who lived in Hawaiki. The story goes that he possessed magic powers that not all of his family knew about. One day when he was very young, he hid in the bottom of his brothers' boat in order to go out fishing with them. Once out at sea, Maui was discovered by his brothers but they were not able to take him back to shore as Maui made use of his magic powers, making the shoreline seem much further away than it really was. The brothers decided to continue rowing, and once they were far out into the ocean Maui dropped his magic fishhook over the side of the waka. After a while he felt a strong tug on the line. This seemed to be too strong a tug to be any ordinary fish, so Maui called to his brothers to help. After much straining and heaving Maui was able to haul up Te Ika a Maui (the fish of Maui), known today as the North Island of New Zealand. Maui told his brothers that the Gods might be angry about this, and he asked his brothers to wait while he went to make peace with the Gods. However, once Maui had gone his brothers began to argue among themselves about the possession of this new land. They took out their weapons and started pounding away at the catch. The blows on the land created the many mountains and valleys of the North Island today. The South Island is known as Te Waka a Maui (the waka of Maui). Stewart Island is known as Te Punga a Maui (Maui's anchor), as it was the anchor holding Maui's waka as he pulled in the giant fish.

Trucks trucks trucks! Bill Richardson Transport World

As a grandson of H W Richardson Group founder Robert Richardson, Bill Richardson always had a passion for trucks. His collection started with the purchase of the remains of his grandfather’s 1933 International truck. He went on to purchase more trucks over the next few years with the collection starting to expand quite significantly in the mid eighties. At the time of Bill’s death in 2005 he had over 170 vehicles, numerous petrol bowsers and related memorabilia. It was the Richardson family’s desire that the collection continue to expand and be available to people who share Bill’s passion. The museum is currently home to more than 300 trucks and 150 petrol bowsers, and is still growing. The collection also consists of rare, interesting and forgotten manufacturers covering ten decades, crawler tractors, pumps, enamel signs and memorabilia. Viewing of this private collection can be arranged by appointment only, please contact curator Graeme Williams on 0272 088 651.

Business and Functions

Big business With a population of about 50,000, Invercargill is the commercial centre of the Southland region. Southland’s economy is largely based on agriculture (sheep, beef and dairy). Our climate and rich soils are well suited to farming, and as a result we have some of the highest lambing rates in the country and have become an integral supplier to the international wool industry as New Zealand is the world’s third largest wool producer. Fishing, forestry, tourism, manufacturing and energy resources like coal and hydroelectric power are also significant contributors to our local economy. Southland is also home to the world’s largest raw milk-processing plant in Edendale. Despite being the co-operative's oldest operating manufacturing site, Fonterra Edendale is also where you will find some of the industry's latest technology as the organisation strives to be a leader in innovation and sustainability. Commercial port, South Port at Bluff is New Zealand's southernmost commercial deep water port. It provides pilotage, towage, berthage and full marine services to international and coastal vessels including the southern fishing fleet. With the increasing popularity of the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), a zero fees tertiary institution, education has also become hugely important to the area. Thousands of students are attracted here each year from all over New Zealand and the world to study. B3

Day trips ...or a little longer. The best of the Southland region Invercargill is the gateway to some of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenery and destinations. Tips for a Safe Journey Southland roads are among New Zealand’s most demanding and there are a few challenges that you may not be used to. Here are a few tips for ensuring your travels are safe and enjoyable.

Travel Times

Remember to allow plenty of time for your journeys. Although travel distances may seem short on paper, roads may be narrower than you are used to, cover hilly terrain and vary quickly from sealed to unsealed gravel roads.

Sightseeing

When driving in frosty conditions slow down and increase your following distance. Avoid sudden movements – accelerate smoothly and brake gently.

Snow

Extra care is required in winter and early spring, when there may be snow on the roads.

Take extra care when pulling out onto the road after stopping to rest or admire the scenery - this is when many tourist crashes happen.

Avoid driving when it is snowing if possible. If you are travelling when snow is forecast, ensure you carry snow chains and are familiar with how to fit them.

Animals on the Road

If you are travelling the Milford Road between May and November you are legally required to carry snow chains; these can be hired from service stations in Te Anau. The Milford road is also subject to closure due to the risk of avalanches during this period.

If you encounter livestock on the roads, slow down and let the animals go past you or move slowly behind them.

Unsealed Gravel Roads

In rural or remote areas, many roads are unsealed. When travelling on gravel roads, reduce speed and beware that dust thrown up from other vehicles can reduce visibility.

Visibility

Rain, fog and snow reduce your ability to see and be seen. Slow down and drive with your lights on dip. Ensure that your windscreen, mirrors and other windows are clear and free of frost before driving. Use an ice scraper, water or your vehicle’s heater to melt the ice.

Sun Glare

Always carry sunglasses and if the sun is affecting your vision, slow down or pull over to adjust your sight.

Icy Roads

In winter frosts can be severe and ice can stay on the road all day, especially if the road is shaded.

Road Conditions Reports For up-to-date State Highway conditions, call 0800 44 44 49 or visit www.highwayinfo.govt.nz

If Things Go Wrong

Bluff Just 28km from the city is Bluff, the first European settlement in New Zealand and the departure point for Stewart Island. The township has a lot of notable historical sites and great seafood, so pack your walking shoes and camera and head down with a healthy appetite to check out all Bluff has to offer! Stirling Point is one for your bucket list. The famed international signpost at Stirling Point marks the start of the country’s main state highway and is one of the most photographed landmarks in the country. The point also features a walk to the Bluff lighthouse and one end of the chain link sculpture that symbolises the link between the mainland and Stewart Island. Bluff Hill Lookout is accessible by road or via the walking tracks from Stirling Point. The viewing platform at the top of Bluff hill offers panoramic views across Foveaux Strait and back to the coastline and flat plains of southland. For the more adventurous, Bluff hill is also home to a number of downhill mountain biking tracks. Bluff oysters are reputed to be the best in the world, and you can’t get any fresher than a seafood dish at a local restaurant or café. The annual Bluff Oyster and Southland Seafood Festival in May is a must for everyone’s bucket list!

Stewart Island Nature dominates Stewart Island, with white sand beaches, clear waters, breathtaking sunsets and unique native bird and plant species. Visit Ulva Island bird sanctuary or try your hand at deep sea fishing. There are also plenty of remarkable walks and if you’re lucky you may even spot a kiwi! Kiwi ingenuity shines in Halfmoon Bay where a giant chess set has been created using road cones for playing pieces. Test your skills against your companions or see if you can rope a local into playing with you Rakiura National Park covers more than 80 percent of the island and the island’s only settlement, Oban, is home to just 400 residents.

Northern Southland Northern Southland features rolling hills and lush plains set against a stunning mountain backdrop. The area boasts a number of famous fly fishing spots, rich heritage and friendly local hospitality. Lumsden and Athol are ideal stop off points to and from Queenstown, while Mossburn is perfectly situated on the way to Te Anau. Over summer 2014 -2015 the Northern Southland Cycle Trail will be officially opened to the public. This brand new trail is the ultimate way to explore the region and is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness Peter Rabbit’s House Wow, this is so secret that even most locals don’t know about it! Marvel at the number of ornamental rabbits and letters left by fans and leave Peter a note in one of the books in the visitor box. Find your way to Peter’s house by these three key clues: Garston, Church, Big Tree.

The Catlins There is nothing like the sweeping coastlines and pristine rainforests of the Catlins. The Catlins coast is home to rare native wildlife, including the Yellow Eyed penguin, Hector’s dolphin, seals and sea lions. The 180 million year old fossilised forest at Curio Bay is a must-see and if you keep your eyes peeled for walking tracks and look-out points you will find many more hidden treasures along the way.

83

Western Southland Rugged coastline, lush farmland and rich early settler history characterise the Western Southland region. Stop in the arty, seaside town of Riverton, dubbed the ‘Riviera of the South’ and a popular holiday spot. Picturesque Colac Bay boasts ‘Porridge,’ one of New Zealand’s top surfing spots. Experience true wilderness when you walk the Hump Ridge Track, which departs from Tuatapere. Jetboating and fishing charters are also hot favourites in the area. If you feel up to the challenge, the Clifden Caves provide a truly unique experience. One of the few cave systems in the Southland region, they feature stalactites, stalagmites and glowworms. It will take you approximately 1.5-2 hours to travel through and some parts do require crawling. Leave your Sunday best at home for this one! (Sturdy footwear is a must)

Central Southland Winton offers beautiful gardens, buildings and an array of quality cafes, restaurants and fashion retail outlets. Originally a railway junction, Winton is no longer served by any trains but is surrounded by diverse farmlands. Nearby Limehills, Hedgehope, Dipton and Browns are all quaint townships servicing agriculture and industry such as dairy, sawmills and coal.
