Welcome to Invercargill Southland’s innovative capital. Kia Ora and greetings to everyone visiting the scenic south. The capital city of Southland is Invercargill, the only city in the world to carry that name. We are proud of our strong, resilient, multi-cultural heritage and although we may be a small city, we make up for our size with creativity, intelligence, exciting events (listed on page 23) and most of all, our innovation. Our Southern Institute of Technology introduced a Zero Fees Scheme that increased our student numbers from 1000 to 5000 within a few years. One of our graduates, Damien van Brandenburg was determined to become an architect and is now designing the biggest and most stunning fashion house in China. Along with education, our innovation also extends to the fields of technology, science and large industries. All our public buses have free Wi-Fi, virtually all our farms are connected by broadband and we play a vital role in the European Space Agency’s Ariane 5 ATV missions. The purest aluminium in the world (99.98% pure) is produced down here and our Tangata Whenua Ngai Tahu developed whale watching, which attracts over a million visitors a year to the South Island. Behind our innovation of course, is our great local people. Known also for their welcoming hospitality they will help ensure your experience in the south is enjoyable and one to remember.

Time to fish Invercargill has superb brown trout fishing on its doorstep. Much of our best fishing is easily reached by vehicle, but to increase your range a good four wheel drive is recommended. Hot spots can be found on the Oreti River which flows just to the west of the city, the Aparima River 20km further west and about 30km east there is the renowned Mataura River. Said to be the ultimate in dry fly angling for brown trout, the Mataura River boasts 150km of easily accessed waters. It’s important to note that you need a fishing licence to fish for trout. Licences are available from the Fish and Game NZ website or from local sports stores where helpful staff can offer you great local advice. Here are a couple of pointers to get you started. In the spring fishing is good at any time of the day, especially if a south westerly wind is blowing, but as the summer heats up, evening fly fishing becomes the most productive method in our rivers. Fish and Game has an office at 159 North Road, Invercargill where they provide licences and advice so anglers can get the best out of their time in the south. Family Friendly Invercargill has plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. And with many of our popular attractions being very affordable or even free, it’s clear to see why it’s known as the family friendly city. A great place to start exploring is the jewel of Invercargill’s centre, Queens Park. Several hours need to be put aside to make the most of this 81ha (200 acre) wonderland. The grand Feldwick Gates mark the main entrance to the park, inviting you to walk through the stunning Coronation Avenue lined with English Beech and Silver Birch trees. Once a grazing block for cattle, the transformed park now contains an animal reserve, ponds, a band rotunda, statues, a fantastic playground and waterpark. The park’s beautiful gardens and botanical attractions have something to offer all year round and for those more energetic, there is a popular 4km fitness trail complete with twenty exercise stations.

Culture hit

Museums, art galleries and architecture Invercargill's history, culture, heritage, architecture and art is bound to educate and impress even the most sophisticated of our visitors!

The Southland Museum and Art Gallery Niho O Te Taniwha Home to some of New Zealand’s most precious taonga (treasures) the Southland Museum and Art Gallery Niho O Te Taniwha has something to engage everyone. Housed in the iconic pyramid building, visitors can discover contemporary art alongside stories of our ancestors. Temporary exhibitions are complimented by long-term displays which explore aspects of southern lands, the people and the indigenous creatures of the south.

Heritage Buildings Invercargill city boasts architecture from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras. Our advice for those wanting to see and learn more? Pick up an Invercargill Heritage Trail brochure, grab your camera, explore and appreciate the local heritage buildings and unique architecture - you will not be disappointed!

The Water Tower At just over 40m high, the Invercargill Water Tower is Invercargill’s most recognised landmark. The historic tower was built in 1888/1889 to support the city’s first highpressure water supply tank. The tower now functions as a back up in the Invercargill water supply and is still able to provide enough pressure should the electric supply to the modern pumps be interrupted. In early 2012 public admission to the tower was stopped to enable council to consider the safety risk the building would pose in the event of an earthquake. While this is a temporary restriction, for now visitors can enjoy the beauty of the tower from the ground.

A story about how Kiwi lost its wings According to Maori legend, Tanemahuta (god of the forest) was worried about his children, (the trees), as bugs and birds were eating away at them. He consulted his brother Tane-hokahoka (god of the birds) who asked his children to come down from the forest roof and live on the floor. He asked Tui but Tui looked down at the cold dark forest floor and said no because he was afraid of the dark. So Tane-hokahoka turned to Pukeko, but Pukeko looked down at the forest floor and saw the cold, damp earth. He said no because it was damp and he didn’t want to get his feet wet. Tanehokahoka then asked Pipiwharauroa, who looked around at his family and claimed he was too busy building a nest. Tane-hokahoka knew that if one of his children did not come down from the forest roof, not only would his brother lose his children, but the birds would have no home. Finally, Tane-hokahoka turned to Kiwi and asked, will you come down from the forest roof? Kiwi looked up at the trees and saw the sun filtering through the leaves and he looked at his family, the dark, cold, damp earth below. He turned to Tane-hokahoka and said, "Yes”. While overjoyed, Tane-hokahoka and Tane-mahuta felt they should warn Kiwi of what would happen. "Kiwi, do you realise that if you do this, you will have to grow thick, strong legs so that you can rip apart the logs on the ground and you will lose your beautiful coloured feathers and wings so that you will never be able to return to the forest roof. You will never see the light on day again." Kiwi took one last look at the sun filtering through the trees and at the other birds wings and coloured feathers and said a silent goodbye. He turned to Tane-hokahoka and said, “I will do it." Then Tane-hokahoka turned to all the birds and said, “Tui, because you were too scared to come down from the forest roof, from now on you will wear the two white feathers at your throat as the mark of a coward. Pukeko, because you did not want to get your feet wet, you will live forever in the swamp. Pipiwharauroa, because you were too busy building your nest, from now on you will never build another nest again, but lay your eggs in other bird’s nests. But you Kiwi, because of your great sacrifice, you will become the most well known and most loved bird of them all."

Trucks trucks trucks! As a grandson of H W Richardson Group founder Robert Richardson, Bill Richardson always had a passion for trucks. His collection started with the purchase of the remains of his grandfather’s 1933 International truck. He went on to purchase more trucks over the next few years but his collection started to really expand in the mid eighties. At the time of Bill’s death in 2005 he had over 170 vehicles, numerous petrol bowsers and related memorabilia. It was the Richardson family’s desire that the collection continue to expand and be available to people who share Bill’s passion. The museum is currently home to more than 230 trucks and 150 petrol bowsers, and is still growing. The collection also houses rare, interesting and forgotten manufacturers covering ten decades, crawler tractors, pumps, enamel signs and memorabilia. The museum is open by appointment only, to make an appointment to view please contact curator Graeme Williams on 0272 088 651. B3

Tips for a Safe Journey Southland roads are among New Zealand’s most demanding and there are a few challenges that you may not be used to. Here are a few tips for ensuring your travels are safe and enjoyable.

Travel Times

Remember to allow plenty of time for your journeys. Although travel distances may seem short on paper, roads may be narrower than you are used to, cover hilly terrain and vary quickly from sealed to unsealed gravel roads.

Sightseeing

Take extra care when pulling out onto the road after stopping to rest or admire the scenery - this is when many tourist crashes happen.

Animals on the Road

If you encounter livestock on the roads, slow down and let the animals go past you or move slowly behind them.

Unsealed Gravel Roads

In rural or remote areas, many roads are unsealed. When travelling on gravel roads, reduce speed and beware that dust thrown up from other vehicles can reduce visibility.

Visibility

Rain, fog and snow reduce your ability to see and be seen. Slow down and drive with your lights on dip. Ensure that your windscreen, mirrors and other windows are clear and free of frost before driving. Use an ice scraper, water or your vehicle’s heater to melt the ice.

Sun Glare

Always carry sunglasses and if the Brought to you by

sun is affecting your vision, slow down or pull over to adjust your sight.

Icy Roads

In winter frosts can be severe and ice can stay on the road all day, especially if the road is shaded. When driving in frosty conditions slow down and increase your following distance. Avoid sudden movements – accelerate smoothly and brake gently.

Snow

Extra care is required in winter and early spring, when there may be snow on the roads. Avoid driving when it is snowing if possible. If you are travelling when snow is forecast, ensure you carry snow chains and are familiar with how to fit them. If you are travelling the Milford Road between May and November you are legally required to carry snow chains; these can be hired from service stations in Te Anau. The Milford road is also subject to closure due to the risk of avalanches during this period.

Road Conditions Reports For up-to-date State Highway conditions, call 0800 44 44 49 or visit www.highwayinfo.govt.nz

If Things Go Wrong

In an emergency phone 111. Keep yourself and your vehicle visible. If you are involved in an accident, report the matter to the police.

Bluff Just 28km from the city is Bluff, the first European settlement in New Zealand and the departure point for Stewart Island. The township has a lot of notable historical sites and great seafood, so pack your walking shoes and camera and head down with a healthy appetite to check out all Bluff has to offer! Stirling Point is one for your bucket list. The famed international signpost at Stirling Point marks the start of the country’s main state highway and is one of the most photographed landmarks in the country. The point also features a walk to the Bluff lighthouse and one end of the chain link sculpture that symbolises the link between the mainland and Stewart Island. Bluff Hill Lookout is accessible by road or via the walking tracks from Stirling Point. The viewing platform at the top of Bluff hill offers panoramic views across Foveaux Strait and back to the coastline and flat plains of southland. For the more adventurous, Bluff hill is also home to a number of downhill mountain biking tracks. Bluff oysters are reputed to be the best in the world, and you can’t get any fresher than a seafood dish at a local restaurant or café. The annual Bluff Oyster and Southland Seafood Festival in May is a must for everyone’s bucket list! G2

Northern Southland Northern Southland features rolling hills and lush plains set against a stunning mountain backdrop. The area boasts a number of famous fly fishing spots, rich heritage and friendly local hospitality. Lumsden and Athol are ideal stop off points to and from Queenstown, while Mossburn is perfectly situated on the way to Te Anau. Peter Rabbit’s House Wow, this is so secret that even most locals don’t know about it! Marvel at the number of ornamental rabbits and letters left by fans and leave Peter a note in one of the books in the visitor box. Find your way to Peter’s house by these three key clues: Garston, Church, Big Tree.

The Catlins There is nothing like the sweeping coastlines and pristine rainforests of the Catlins. The Catlins coast is home to rare native wildlife, including the Yellow Eyed penguin, Hector’s dolphin, seals and sea lions. The 180 million year old fossilised forest at Curio Bay is a must-see and if you keep your eyes peeled for walking tracks and look-out points you will find many more hidden treasures along the way.
