LIVING

SINGLE

IT'S A GOOD THING Te x t b y B e l l a D e P a u l o

The 21st century is the age of living single. Today, the number of single adults in the U.S. – and many other nations around the world – is unprecedented. And the numbers don’t just say people are staying single longer before settling down. More are staying single for life. A 2014 Pew Report estimates that by the time today’s young adults reach the age of 50, about one in four of them will have never married. The ascendancy of single living has left some in a panic. US News & World Report, for example, cautioned that Americans think the country’s moral values are bad and getting worse, and one of the top reasons for their concern is the large number of people remaining single.

"You know you're SINGLE . . .

. . .when your remotes have their own side of the bed." @SingleinCharlotte

But instead of fretting, maybe we should celebrate. I’m a social scientist, and I’ve spent the past two decades researching and writing about single people. I’ve found that the rise of single living is a boon to our cities and towns and communities, our relatives and friends and neighbors. This trend has the chance to redefine the traditional meaning – and confines – of home, family and community. TIES THAT BIND For years, communities across the country have been organized by clusters of nuclear families living in suburban homes. But there are some signs that this arrangement isn’t working out so well. These houses are often too isolating – too far from work and

22

from one another. According to a national survey ongoing since 1974, Americans have never been less likely to be friends with their neighbors than they are now, with neighborliness lowest in the suburbs. But studies have also shown that single people are bucking those trends. For example, they are more likely than married people to encourage, help and socialize with their friends and neighbors. They are also more likely to visit, support, advise and stay in touch with their siblings and parents. In fact, people who live alone are often the life of their cities and towns. They tend to participate in more civic groups and public events, enroll in more art and music classes, and go out to dinner more often than people who live with others. Single people, regardless of whether they live alone or with others, also

volunteer more for social service organizations, educational groups, hospitals and organizations devoted to the arts than people who are married.

Reports of the early death of single people have also been greatly exaggerated, as have claims that marriage transforms miserable, sickly single people into happy and healthy spouses.

In contrast, when couples move in together or get married, they tend to become more insular, even if they don’t have children.

In some significant ways, it’s the single people who are doing particularly well.

BUILDING STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE Unfortunately, single life continues to be stigmatized, with single people routinely stereotyped as less secure and more selfcentered than married people. They’re said to die sooner, alone and sad.

For example, people with more diversified relationship portfolios tend to be more satisfied with their lives. In contrast, the insularity of couples who move in together or get married can leave them vulnerable to poorer mental health.

Yet studies of people who live alone typically find that most are doing just fine; they don’t feel isolated, nor are they sad and lonely.

Studies have shown that people who stay single develop more confidence in their own opinions and undergo more personal growth and development than people who marry. For example, they value meaningful work more than married people do. They

as a marital status, they should have independently owned and operated." @SingleMoms.Awesome

may also have more opportunities to enjoy the solitude that many of them savor.

that they crave. They are instead finding or creating a variety of different lifespaces.

REDEFINING THE FAMILY AND HOME Married people often put their spouse (and, for some, kids) at the center of their lives. That’s what they’re expected to do, and often it’s also what they want to do.

Sometimes you’ll see 21st-century variations of traditional arrangements, like multi-generational households that allow for privacy and independence as well as social interaction. Others – and not just the very young – are living with their friends or other families of choice.

But single people are expanding the traditional boundaries of family. The people they care about the most might include family in the traditional sense. But they’ll also loop in friends, ex-partners and mentors. It’s a bigger, more inclusive family of people who matter. For many single people, single-family suburban homes aren’t going to offer them the balance between sociability and solitude

26

THEMILLMAGAZINE.COM•EDITION 8 NO. 3•DECORUM

Those who cherish their alone time will often choose to live alone. Some have committed romantic relationships but choose to live in places of their own, a lifestyle of “living apart together.” Some of the most fascinating innovations are pursued by people who seek both solitude and easy sociability. These individuals might move into their own apartment, but it’s in a building or

neighborhood where friends and family are already living. They might buy a duplex with a close friend, or explore cohousing communities or pocket neighborhoods, which are communities of small homes clustered around shared spaces such as courtyards or gardens. Single parents are also innovating. Single mothers, for example, can go to CoAbode to try to find other single mothers with whom they can share a home and a life. Other single people might want to raise children with the full support of another parent. Now they can look for a partner in parenting – with no expectations for romance or marriage – at websites such as Family by Design and Modamily. As the potential for living a full and meaningful single life becomes more widely known, living single will become more of

a genuine choice. And when living single is a real choice, then getting married will be, too. Fewer people will marry as a way of fleeing single life or simply doing what they are expected to do, and more will choose it because it’s what they really want. If current trends continue, successive generations will have unprecedented opportunities to pursue the life that suits them best, rather than the one that is prescribed.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMPETENCY THROUGH EMERSION Te x t b y C a t h e r i n e S n o w A recent report from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences calls for more attention to language teaching in the U.S. The report notes that U.S. students have much less access to foreign language instruction than students in other economically developed countries, and that Americans are thus much less likely to be bi- or multilingual. As an expert on language and literacy development in children, I’ve talked to many immigrant parents who expect their children to grow up bilingual, only to be surprised that they end up as monolingual English speakers. Meanwhile, foreign language learning opportunities for English speakers are limited. Why is the U.S. so bad at producing bilinguals?

DECORUM•EDITION 8 NO. 3•THEMILLMAGAZINE.COM

31

NATIVE LANGUAGE LOSS The dismal state of bilingual and multilingual fluency in the U.S. has a couple of sources. Notably, far too many of the children with the greatest potential to become good bilinguals – the children of immigrants – lose fluency in their parents’ language. It’s estimated that by the third generation, immigrants have completely lost fluency in their heritage languages. Ongoing support (political and social as well as educational) for maintenance of minority languages is limited. Bilingualism can be impeded by a general sense that it’s more important for immigrants to learn English than to maintain their first language, and that these are somehow in conflict with one another.

In my view, it’s ironic that we have students walking up staircases at one end of their school building to attend Spanish foreign language classes while at the other end of the same 32

THEMILLMAGAZINE.COM•EDITION 8 NO. 3•DECORUM

building native Spanish speakers are being taught English and content in ways that lead to their loss of Spanish. FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES ‘FAIL’ The other factor contributing to a lack of bilingual proficiency in the U.S. may be low expectations. Too many Americans accept the claim that foreign language instruction is a dismal failure, that a very large percentage of students will never become fluent in another language and that investing in foreign language learning is likely to be a waste of time. How do we explain, then, that l00 percent of students in Germany, Scandinavia, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Singapore and many other places achieve high levels of competence in English – and typically in at least one or two other languages as well? Is the U.S. student population afflicted with some peculiar block to foreign language learning?

DECORUM•EDITION 8 NO. 3•THEMILLMAGAZINE.COM

33

I would argue that we as Americans do have a block to successful foreign language learning: our deeply unrealistic expectations about how it works. Can a few years of experience in middle school or high school classrooms (experience that likely adds up to less than 600 total hours of instruction) generate excellence in another language? Frankly, no – at least not for most students. 36

THEMILLMAGAZINE.COM•EDITION 8 NO. 3•DECORUM

MOVING FORWARD THROUGH OPPORTUNITY Despite the current limitations of most curricula, such classroom experience can, however, form a solid foundation for truly learning a foreign language. This is particularly true when a genuine communicative opportunity arises. Some lucky students get that opportunity on trips abroad. Others might seek it out by volunteering in refugee centers or programs serving immigrant youth, or by seeking digital contacts with native speakers.

Many efforts to rethink the traditional foreign language classroom experience have been tried. These efforts include immersion, dual immersion and other bilingual school programs. Such programs typically recruit kindergartners DECORUM•EDITION 8 NO. 3•THEMILLMAGAZINE.COM

37

and build second language skills by teaching content through the second language. They often work well, but starting at kindergarten is not a requirement for ultimate fluency. Immersion programs are effective and, in fact, generate equivalent learning in less time if started at later grades. Late immersion may be more efficient just because older students are better learners, and are generally more likely to have had a say in choosing the immersion program – thus they’re also more motivated to learn. With such opportunities to improve foreign language instruction, let’s not give up on it entirely – let’s figure out how to complement it with the experiences that enable students to exploit it optimally.

RED THE RETURN OF A CLASSIC Te x t b y C a n d a c e M a t t i n g l y

Bright, bold, intense, and sultry, red is back in a big way. The color dominated the runway at both New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. “There is a commonality between the colors we are seeing on the runway in New York and London.” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “However, individuality is evident and we are seeing a distinct difference between the shows in the two cities in the way these same colors are being combined.” The stand out red from New York is Grenadine; a powerful, evocative, dynamic red, that’s a confident and self-assured attention-getter. “Led by a vivid Flame Scarlet, the (London) color palette...is comprised of strong classic colors complemented by a few unpredictable shades for the autumn and winter seasons,” noted Eiseman. Compiled on the following pages are a variety of looks to help you add red to your wardrobe. Remember to shop local, independently owned boutiques whenever possible. You’ll find unique, affordable items that you won’t see at the big box stores. Get inspired here, then go shop small.

MADE with

GRACE

SOUTHERN COMFORT FOOD MAKEOVER Te x t b y W i l l i a m E m e r s o n According to Robert Wayner, an animal rights advocate, writer, and artist based in Chicago, “most Christians in the Western Hemisphere eat meat” and “when asked about the morality of killing animals for food, the response from most self-described Christians is almost always the same: the Bible teaches that humans have dominion over animals, and that killing them for food or any other service to humans is allowable.” However, Wayner has found that “when all scriptural passages pertaining to animal welfare are viewed within the larger context of the Christian message of grace, atonement, and mercy developed throughout the Bible, there exists an even stronger argument that promotes the humane and compassionate treatment of animals.” He cites many celebrated theologians and leaders who believe abstinence from meat and all animal products is what God intended. With this idea in mind, we have re-imagined some southern comfort food classics to eliminate meat and dairy. Hence, remaking popular recipes of the dishes we all love with grace. We are showing grace to all God’s creatures by causing no harm to them. And, gracing ourselves with these healthier options, not only benefits our physical being, but our spiritual one as well.

Biscuits & Gravy Ingredients For Biscuits 2 c Flour 4 tsp Baking Powder 1/4 tsp Baking Soda 3/4 tsp Salt

2 tbsp Vegan Margarine 2 tbsp Vegetable Shortening 1 cup Almond Milk 2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar

For Gravy 1/2 lb Vegan Sausage 1/4 c Flour 2 c Almond Milk Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine the almond milk and vinegar. Allow to sit for at least 10 minutes to create “vegan buttermilk”. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Using a pastry cutter (or just your fingers), quickly cut into dry ingredients until mixture looks like crumbs. Add the vegan buttermilk. Stir just until the dough comes together. The dough will be very sticky. Turn dough onto floured surface and using as little flour as possible, gently fold dough over on itself a few times. Press into a 1-inch thick round, cutting out the biscuits with a 3 inch cutter. Place biscuits on a Silpat or baking sheet so that they just touch. Reform scrap dough, working it as little as possible and continue cutting until as much of the dough has been used as possible. Bake until biscuits are tall and light gold on top, 15 to 20 minutes. While the biscuits are baking, cook the vegan sausage in a skillet. Remove the sausage from pan when fully cooked. Whisk together the flour and almond milk and add to the hot pan, cooking over low heat for 5 minutes until it thickens. Add the cooked vegan sausage and season with salt and pepper as needed. Serve over warm biscuits.

Mashed Potatoes Ingredients 6-8 medium yukon gold potatoes 1 1/2 tsp sea salt 1/2 tsp ground black pepper

5-6 cloves roasted garlic 3-4 Tbsp vegan butter, melted/softened 1/4 cup fresh chives for topping

Directions Place potatoes in a large saucepan or pot and cover with water. Bring to a light boil over medium-high heat, add 1 tsp of sea salt, cover and cook for 25-30 minutes or until very tender. While the potatoes are cooking, chop up your chives and measure your butter. Once tender, drain your potatoes and place them back in the hot pot off the heat for 1 minute to evaporate any additional water, then transfer to a large mixing bowl. Mash your potatoes using either a potato masher or a hand mixer until fluffy. Be careful not to overmix the potatoes and they can become gluey. Add in butter, garlic, salt, and black pepper and stir. Top with chives and serve as is or with your favorite gravy.

Collard Greens Ingredients 1 bunch of collard greens, shredded 1 garlic clove, minced 1 small onion, diced 1/2 red bell pepper, diced

1 1/2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 cup vegetable broth 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Directions In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat, and add the onions and peppers to sauté until soft, about 3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for only another 30 seconds, as garlic tends to burn easily. Lower the heat to medium-low, and add the shredded collard greens to the pan. Let the greens cook for about a minute, or until you see the leaves start to wilt, and then add the vegetable broth. Bring the vegetable broth to a simmer, cover the pot, and leave this over medium-low heat for about 25 minutes. Add the salt, pepper, paprika, red pepper flakes, and apple cider vinegar. Stir well and serve warm.

No-Chicken & Dumplings Ingredients For Stew 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup vegan chicken defrosted and diced 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 5 cups vegan vegetable broth 1 cup nutritional yeast 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon dried thyme 11/2 teaspoons rubbed sage

2 teaspoons dried rosemary crushed 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 clove garlic minced 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1/4 teaspoon celery seed 2 bay leaves 2 carrots chopped 3 stalks celery chopped

1/2 cup frozen peas For Dumplings 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 2 tablespoons vegan margarine 3/4 cup soy or almond milk 1 teaspoon dried rosemary crushed

Directions In a Dutch oven or stew pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Toss in the vegan chicken and cook until it is browned and has crispy edges. Transfer it to a plate lined with a paper towel to soak up any extra oil, leaving the oil in the pan. Using a wooden spoon, stir the flour into the hot oil left in the pan. Add the veggie broth and whisk in the nutritional yeast. Using a large wooden spoon, stir in the soy sauce, thyme, sage, rosemary, onion powder, garlic, pepper, parsley, celery seed, bay leaves, carrots, celery, and peas.

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, make the dumplings: In a large bowl, combine all the dumplings ingredients and use an electric handheld mixer to mix the ingredients until they form a firm batter. Use a soup spoon to form dumplings. Raise the heat under the pot of stew to bring it to a boil. Drop the raw dumplings into the hot stew one at a time and stir them in with a wooden spoon. Make sure the dumplings get completely covered so they cook evenly. Let the dumplings simmer in the stew for 10 to 15 minutes. Mix in the cooked vegan chicken before serving with a few pinches of pepper over the top.

Baby Lima Beans Ingredients 6 cups frozen baby lima beans 1 tablespoon veggie bouillon 1/4 cup finely minced onion

½ tsp garlic powder Salt and pepper, to taste 1 tsp Liquid Smoke, optional

Directions Fill pot with water and add beans, veggie bouillon, onion, garlic, liquid smoke, bringing water to a boil. Reduce to a low simmer and cook, partially covered for 30 to 45 minutes, or longer, until beans are tender and creamy. Salt and pepper to taste.

Banana Pudding Ingredients 2 and 1/2 cups unsweetened plant milk (soy, almond, coconut) 4 tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 cup organic sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 large bananas, sliced 12-15 vegan vanilla wafers 1 tub non-dairy coconut whip

Whisk until dissolved then pour the mixture in a saucepan with the remaining plant milk and warm over medium heat. Bring to a low boil and continually whisk until mixture starts to thicken, for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract then transfer to a bowl and allow to cool. Cover and refrigerate for a minimum of 3 hours or overnight. Once the pudding is thickened, use a hand mixer to beat it until smooth. In an 8×8 dish, cover the bottom with vanilla wafers.
