VII. “William.” The name echoes in Samuel’s head. He’s surprised to hear Sarah speak that name. William is the very reason that Sam is outside this window, spying on this young couple. It was William who had found him, several days ago, in a drunken sorrow, and promised to help him answer a question that has troubled his soul for many years—what had been the fate of his beloved Vanessa. “Sarah knows what has happened to Vanessa,” William had told him the night before. Could he have been telling the truth?

Samuel deeply wants to believe it. He tries to remember William the way he’d been when they first met, stricken with grief over the death of his lover, Judith. His grief had touched Samuel’s own feelings about Vanessa, and because of this they had bonded. They had found commonality in more than grief, though, in ideals too, about making the world a better place. Samuel wants to believe that, somewhere deep inside that miserable husk of a man William has since become, there still exists his comrade of long ago. But he doesn’t. Samuel is not even sure he believes William has any human emotion left inside him. Most likely, there is nothing but ambition. Ambition, and something else… Something that Samuel can only ascribe to a vague craving for revenge. And yet, William’s desire for revenge does not seem to be directed at any particular person, but rather against life in general. Perhaps it was against fate, or even the gods. It is the kind of revenge that Ahab must have wanted to deliver unto the poor, dumb whale. “It seems,” William had said, nonplussed by Samuel’s bewildered gaze, “that Sarah is mostly concerned with the truth. Or else with reconnecting in some way with her mother Susan.” Sam had watched as William shifted his weight, his brow furrowing. “The heart is complicated. In either case, she took David’s journals and went back to the cottage, where she found some hidden place that we must have missed. It seems to have contained her own mother’s recollections, and some writings of the Old Lady. The duplicates I mentioned. Sarah now has quite a collection, and she’s using all of it to compose some sort of book. A history centered around her mother’s death.” “But nobody would ever believe it, what happened,” Samuel had said. “It was all so… fantastic! I don’t even believe it myself, and I was there.” “You’re probably right. All the same… the events themselves have become town lore in Solomon, if not the reasons behind these events. Who knows what will be revealed? Who knows what will be believed? Everywhere there are people who seem ready to believe in anything, given it amuses them enough.”
VIII.
James pours them each a glass of orange juice. While pouring Sarah’s glass, he pauses. “I just had an amazing thought,” he says, “Mr. William and Ms. Elizabeth should just take their freak show on the road, at least get some money while they are at it.” “That’s absolutely the dumbest thing you’ve uttered this entire morning,” Sarah says, adding, “And besides, it’s completely ridiculous.” “What is?” James says. “We both know you don’t like Elizabeth because you’re jealous of her.” “Why would I be jealous?”

What’s For Dinner? By Elizabeth Behnke & Andrea Jones
Trying to decide where to go out to eat with the family can be a point of contention. The discussion is nearly always the same: Parent A: “What do you feel like having?” Parent B: “I don’t know. You pick.” Parent A: “What sounds good?” Parent B: “Whatever.” Parent A: “I hate it when you do that.” Parent B: “Do what?” Parent A: “Make me pick. I hate always having to pick.” There can be hours of deliberation on what kind of food sounds good, and then the debate about what restaurant, and all the while your stomach is growling like a monster. That’s when you hear this from one of your kids in the backseat: “How about Mexican food?” Bingo! Mexican it is, but you don’t want the Americanized version of Mexican food; you want the real deal. And you can have it, the authentic taste from south of the border, right here in Colorado Springs. El Padrino Mexicano serves up true Mexican cuisine with an atmosphere that is comfortably elegant and family-friendly. The folks at El Padrino Mexicano incorporate authentic family recipes into their exceptional dishes, which are complemented by great customer service. They provide the right balance of traditional Mexican culture with an ideal modern atmosphere. Bring the whole family, relax and enjoy delectable aromas, delicious food, and tantalizing entrees, sides and drinks. There is something for everyone at El Padrino Mexicano! 6

“For one, she’s smarter than you, and, for two, I think I’m starting to like her better.” “Yeah? And that’s another thing!” he exclaims, pointing his unused fork toward her. “You can’t tell me she’s not in love with you. I mean, she stares at everybody. But, with you, she lingers.” “Maybe…” Sarah muses, pinching her bottom lip. “Well, okay, so what if she does? I mean, what does that even matter? It’s you I love, not her.” As she says this, she reaches out her right foot, rubbing her big toe over the top of his socked feet. “Me, huh?” James replies, “even though she’s obviously so much smarter, regularly exercises, and is working on getting back in touch with her feminine side?” “That’s really funny, James. But while you’re practicing so hard to be your father, your eggs are starting to burn.” He keeps his eyes on her. “No, they’re not really burning, it’s just the spices on top and-- dammit!” At the sight of smoke, he leaps into action, flipping the ceiling fan on and fumbling around for his spatula, which is nowhere in sight. Sarah’s laughter nearly turns hysterical when he finds the spatula in the fridge, next to the orange juice carton, where he must have absentmindedly put it away. “I think it’s all perfectly logical,” Sarah continues, trying to sober herself. “What is?”
He groans, scraping at the skillet with increased vigor. “Did I mention he claims to know how to levitate?” Sarah says, “and you know there’s nothing sexier than a man who can levitate. The ceiling fan would be fixed by now, I’ll say that much.” He drops the pan and stares at her, studying her face. She meets his gaze with a faint challenge in her smile. He decides that, no matter what, he won’t let any irritation show. He is not entirely successful in checking his anger, however, and he feels his cheeks reddening.
James fears the conversation might be heading toward the subject of how busy he’s been lately. On top of his regular duties at work, he’d recently been persuaded to take on a few side projects. Currently, he’s dealing with the whole tedious business of gathering speakers for an upcoming conference. Plus, the budget request deadlines are also rapidly approaching, and then there is a presentation he needs to finish if his department
“Just what is that supposed to mean?” James still feels compelled to ask, knowing they both know what it means. Sarah is no longer casually leaning against the counter. She is erect, poised for battle, feet firmly on the ground. “Nothing at all, except that I’m beginning to feel like you see me as just one more habit, like everything else in your carefully regulated little world.” She takes a deep breath, unfolding her arms and pushing her hair off her face with her palms. “I need more than that. I deserve more than this,” she says with a sweeping gesture, “and you’re always too busy…” Her voice trails away petulantly. “But we are at least comfortable,” he reminds her, “And anyway, this is just for now, until we both get more settled in our careers. What more do you want?” She stares at him a moment, a thoughtful expression on her face, and then with an expansive wave of her arms, exclaims: “Oh would that I, on mountains grand, amid thy blessed light could stand, with spirits through the mountain-caverns hover, float in thy twilight the meadows over, and freed from the fume of lore that swathe me, to health in they dewy fountains bathe me!” James is visibly impressed. “What is that? Shakespeare?” He reaches his arms around her. “Faust!” she exclaims indignantly. “You think everything is Shakespeare. You know, for someone so well read, you know nothing about poetry,” she teases. “You’re angry,” Sarah observes. “It’s because you’re still so paranoid about me having an affair. We’ve been living together for how many months and you don’t trust me! When are you ever going to let your guard down? And it’s ridiculous anyway, because it’s not like you’d even notice if I did anything.”

You know, I’m sure he could cook a decent egg without anything funny like cloves.” She says this last part with a laugh that James finds slightly malicious.

Love, Snot and Tears: The Perils of Parenting contests, activities and games
by amelia wade
Not long ago, the hubby and I decided we’d had a good day with the kids and we’d allow them to terrorize the toy section of a local department store. As we were walking through, I noticed large green vinyl footprints that had been slapped down on the floor, leading into one of the toy aisles. It took a few seconds to realize those were the footprints of The Incredible Hulk, and that all things Hulk-ish and otherwise Avenger were lurking in that aisle.
Q: How many words in the English dictionary rhyme with the word “month”?
I didn’t think twice about it. Not until the bones of my left hand were suddenly being mashed by the vise-like grip of the little hand holding mine. My first thought was that my kid had somehow been replaced by the owner of those huge green footprints, but a quick glance confirmed that the hand belonged to my 3-year-old daughter, Katie. I briefly considered a possible future as the manager of a pint-size boxing champ. (I quickly realized I would not be able to pull off the snazzy tracksuits and dismissed the thought.) And then Katie whispered to me, “Mommy, come look!” and we tiptoed over a few aisles, away from the pretty dolls that were calling to her. She peeked around the corner, and immediately jumped back, still holding tightly to my hand.
“Katie, what’s wrong?” I asked. “Mommy, look!” she whispered very urgently. I looked and looked but could not identify the source of her distress. “Katie, what’s wrong? Can you tell me? Can you show me?” She pointed to the floor and whispered to me, “Monsters!” “Oh! You mean those footprints?”
The look of terror on her face informed me of my mistake, namely, that 3-year-olds aren’t big into sarcasm.
“Yeah!” “Oh. Okay, sure. Yep, they look like monster footprints.” I still wasn’t getting it.
On the ride home, we grownups talked about our day, with Katie interjecting her thoughts on those footprints, insisting that the store had monsters. Foolishly, I made a smart-mouthed comment, something along the lines of the monsters came because some little kids were being naughty and not obeying their mommies and daddies. The look of terror on her face informed me of my mistake, namely, that 3-year-olds aren’t big into sarcasm. I rushed to Continued on pg. 25

Never Too Old to Play by Kathy Allen
May is known for many celebrations – May Day, Mothers Day, carefree daydreams of warm days to come, and Older Americans Month. While we often associate spring with new growth and appreciate all things young, our senior citizens are to be celebrated for their decades of mentoring families, communities, and society. The Administration on Aging (AoA) has issued a theme for Older Americans Month, “Never Too Old to Play,” encouraging older Americans to stay engaged, active and involved in their own lives and communities.
Q: How fast can the cracks move when glass breaks?
In an article from AARP, a 90 year-old was interviewed and asked, “What is it that makes you excited to wake up each day? What keeps you going?” Robert answered, “The key is to always have something to look forward to – and if you don’t have anything, make something, whether it’s a vacation or just a dinner date.” His wife, Judy, stated, “That’s why I always keep my calendar near the phone – to pencil in something to look forward to, be it tomorrow, next week, or next month.” Robert went on to share that he wanted to go steady with Judy (over 60 years ago) because they laughed and had fun wherever they went! On money, Robert said something very profound—“From the cradle to the grave, the money that matters most, is the money you gave.” He laughs when he shares that the $10 bill he gives to his grandchildren in an airport may not mean much to the child. What he understands is the immense joy it gives him. Considering that our seniors are often the caregivers of their grandchildren, play should be very important in their lives. Children learn important life skills from playing—skills like teamwork, sharing, helping someone younger, smaller, or less fortunate. Play has rules but also encourages laughter and FUN. More than 78% of all caregivers are female. Many of these women care for young children, are married, continue to work, suffer from depression, and provide $450 billion worth of unpaid care annually. Finding that place in their days where they are happy is vital.
“The key is to always have something to look forward to— and if you don’t have anything, make something, whether it’s a vacation or just a dinner date.”
With 7.5 million grandchildren in the United States living with a grandparent, the financial impact is staggering. Some of these grandparents have had to change their living arrangements. Additionally, 85% expect to pay some or all of their grandchildren’s educational expenses. What the grandchildren bring to this scenario is their free-spirited, unabashed capability to play. Their energy and pure joy is a wellspring of renewal for the spirits of their elders.
As we age, play may no longer mean being involved in physical sports. Finding pleasure in telling a funny story or sharing an experience of happiness can be playful. An old song, maybe to include dancing to it, brings joy. The warm, genuine smile of a stranger is a welcome pleasure to most ages. To a senior, it is a validation of their existence. We cannot walk in the shoes of our elderly; but we can display kindness and appreciation for their contributions. In Robert’s words, “Do what you can to make people smile. Smiling faces always find a welcome.” Kathy Allen has a B.A. in Communication from the University of Colorado. Kathy lives in Colorado Springs with her husband of 41 years. Her work at Silver Key Senior Services brings her humility and insight into the plight of aging gracefully.

Ask Dr. Andrew Hall Q: What is Periodontal (Gum) disease and what can I do to prevent it? A: Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. Gum disease is caused by plaque. Plaque creates toxins that damage the gums. The good news is that you can help prevent gum disease by taking good care of your teeth every day. Q: I see that you offer dental crowns in a single visit. How is that possible? Will insurance cover this type of procedure? A: Yes, I utilize computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) CEREC technology to deliver crowns in a single visit. The procedure is no different than taking a digital picture of your tooth. With this technology, we can deliver a natural looking, biocompatible, ceramic crown in about 90 minutes. Dental insurance covers this crown just like it does any other crown. Q: My dentures seem to get looser over time. What, if anything, can I do to improve the fit? A: The pressure of dentures on the tissue causes gums to get “flabby” and the bone to shrink over time. The best option for loose or ill-fitting dentures is adding some dental implants. With dental implants, bone loss as well as gum erosion are eliminated. Dental implants actually surround the bone much like teeth do which actually can strengthen the bone and increase bone density. This reduces the shrinkage experienced by many denture wearers. 18

It was at this point I started to clue in that all was not well in Katie’s world. I didn’t really grasp the full gravity of the situation, however, until later that night, when, after multiple escapes from her bed, she told us, in between her cries, how the monster was going to get her. If life was a cartoon, this would be the part where the anvil hits the person on the head, and they get little cuckoo birds singing around their heads. Those fake footprints in the aisle were clear and definitive proof to my little girl that monsters do indeed exist, much like those Bigfoot people that take a plaster impression of a footprint and call it evidence. Finally, exasperated that my reassurances were not enough to calm her fears, I asked my husband to take her to bed and try to put a positive spin on it. He gravely informed her that, first of all, those footprints weren’t real. They were fake, just meant to look like footprints. Then, he explained that even if they were real, they belonged to The Incredible Hulk, and he’s a good guy who works with good guys like SpiderMan and Iron Man, heroes she knows and trusts. He then promised to take her back to the store the next day so she could inspect the footprints further and view the Hulk in all his green glory. Sufficiently placated, she finally fell asleep.
By the end of the “monstrously” successful lesson in Marvel heroes, she was jumping up and down all over those “silly footprints.”
Hmmm… There is probably a lesson in there somewhere. Amelia Wade is a blogger and stay-at-home mom, where she spends her days chasing after her two daughters, ages 3 and 1. The following afternoon, back to the store we went, directly to the dreaded footprints. We cautiously introduced her to The Incredible Hulk. Keeping one eye on the big green cardboard cut-out, she crouched down and gingerly touched the vinyl footprints. Help is Just One Call Away home improvement
by Elizabeth Behnke
Purchasing your first house can be exhilarating. Say goodbye to stingy, smelly, grumpy landlords telling you when rent is due and inconsiderate neighbors throwing parties until the wee hours in the morning. You finally have a place to grow into, start new traditions and make your own, but when disaster strikes, homeownership can be truly terrifying. That’s why PCI Construction walks you through each step of the process so you understand exactly what is being done. A personal project manager will be assigned to you. No matter what calamity befalls you, you’re in good hands with PCI. Fire/Water Damage – If your home experiences fire or water damage, the first thing you need to be thinking about is where to find honest, reliable help. PCI is available 24/7 for emergencies, helping you avoid further damage and unnecessary repairs. Roof Installation – A home’s roof is its first line of defense against nature. Unfortunately, many common roof problems are not easily seen, like wind or hail damage. These problems are hard to spot and practically impossible to see from ground level. PCI takes extra precautions when installing a roof as it is your first line of protection for your home. Problems can strike at any time. When the inevitable happens, call PCI. “Regardless of the issues that came up, I was always informed and understood every step,” says Felisia K. of Colorado Springs. “I would recommend PCI without hesitation.”

Scent-sational Carpet Care by Elizabeth Behnke
Carpet cleaning is such a painful chore; you have to move all of your furniture out to spend hours breaking your back, to clean just one room, all the while wondering why you have a carpeted area in your home in the first place. Then after you are finally finished with that room, you can rest your back while waiting hours for your carpet to dry so you can begin on the next room. Thank goodness that is an old way to carpet clean. Now there is a different solution called Chem-Dry. It is virtually the best way to clean your carpets and upholstery. It dries carpet faster, cleans more efficiently, and is also healthier than other traditional carpet cleaning methods. It uses 80% less water than other processes, which significantly minimizes drying time and reduces the chance of mold, mildew, and bacteria growth. The results: carpet that looks and smells like new. Just ask Zander, a satisfied customer, who says, “We’ve used this company for several years. The method they use is the best in the industry, so we won’t go anywhere else.” The people at Century Chem-Dry are very customer-oriented, ready to answer any questions you can think of. “We would recommend them to anyone,” says satisfied customer Carol. “Their customer service is excellent.” Century Chem-Dry’s safe, non-toxic solutions actually help your fabrics stay as clean as when they were new. Say goodbye to the old back-breaking method of cleaning your carpets and say hello to cleaner, fresher carpet! 30

Interior Decorating on a Dime: Bedroom Edition by Elizabeth Behnke
When thinking of redecorating your home, take a little time to add your bedroom into the plans. Your bedroom is your own personal haven, so pamper yourself a little and turn your sleeping area into an area of peace and relaxation.
Get it together Clutter can be anything that is not necessary to function of your room, and in a bedroom, this can even mean your television. The hubby might throw a fit, but research proves a television in the bedroom hinders sleep. If you absolutely cannot get rid of the clutter, then simply hide it! You can put all of those precious items away in a stylish container. If you don’t have any decorative boxes, you can make some. Simply cover empty shoeboxes or moving boxes with wall paper or fabric to match your bedroom décor. You can even super glue on buttons, ribbon, or trinkets to give it that extra touch of glam!
Center focus
Cut a rug Rugs have an unusual way of pulling a look together. Make sure your rug is proportional to where you are placing it. Use a medium sized rug for seating areas and keep larger rugs to go underneath big items of furniture like your bed. Before you go rug-shopping, decide where you would like to place rugs, and bring accurate measurements of those areas with you to the store. Leave nothing up to chance
Dress up the dresser Wallpapering or painting the front of a dresser or nightstand drawers is an easy way to incorporate new color and design elements. Replace old drawer handles and pulls with decorative ones for a unique look. This trick takes little effort to add personality and style to your dull or outdated furniture.
Window special
interior design
Because of its shape, size, and function the bed is usually the focal point of a bedroom, which means your comforter and pillows are the hot items that set the mood. You can freshen up the look of your room with a lovely new duvet and matching sham set. New bedding is a great way to change your style from classic to modern, romantic to masculine, or graphic to primary in a snap! Choosing separates gives you
more room for style and customization for how your room can look.
Don’t forget to give your windows some special treatments as well. Valences do wonders for bare and boring windows; they are an easy and quick solution that brings life to your

windows. Complement your solid-print curtains with a pattern valance, or vice versa. If you are feeling bold, you can hang long curtains at the top of the wall, instead of just over your window, and let them fall to the floor. For added flair, extend the width of the curtains past the window frame, and pull them open to reveal the entire window.
Light it up Lighting plays a very important part in a bedroom; it is the main factor in setting the mood and type of atmosphere. Low lighting that is subdued sets a more relaxed mood, while bright cheery light is best for more productive activity. Your main source of light should come from lamps on your night stand. Use a three way bulb to control the light level so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.
Pillow Police Pillows are great accents for your bed, but they should be used in moderation. Too many pillows can make a bed nonfunctional and uncomfortable. Keep your pillow obsession under control; limit your bed accessories to just two sets of pillows, max.
Add some greenery Everyone needs a space to escape that is both relaxing and maybe even a little therapeutic. Believe it or not, you can Continued on pg. 49 38

Tree Care Meets Customer Care by Elizabeth Behnke
Kyle Anderson started Anderson Tree & Stump Removal in 2005 with an idea of positively influencing the lives of others. Starting off as just a stump and shrub removal service only and then adding fire mitigations services later, he saw his company grow. In 2009, Kyle Anderson saw a need in the community for a good, honest full service tree shop; the kind of company that won’t scare your family. It was then that Anderson Tree and Stump Removal became a licensed tree service within Colorado Springs. Shortly thereafter Kyle Anderson became an ISA Certified Arborist, showing his commitment again to serving the needs of his customers. Now it is 2012, and their business is booming! With ISA certified arborists, fire mitigation, and complete tree care, Kyle Anderson and his gang can help you with any tree care problem you have. Anderson Tree & Stump Removal is the only tree service in town to employ a grapple truck and a log loading truck, plus they run three chippers so no job is too big or too small to handle. Their veteran tree climbers on staff have no trouble with hazard removals, large pruning operations, or even saving your cat Fluffy.

Any green thumb will tell you the joys of gardening, but it isn’t all fun and games. It is a lot of hard work, and when an army of pests invade your beloved garden it means war. Aphids, mealy bugs, slugs, snails and cutworms are some of the most problematic garden insects across the country, but one that is specific for Colorado is the potato beetle. These annoying pests are resistant to insecticides, so there are few ways to get rid of them. There’s the easy way of introducing natural enemies of the potato beetle like ladybugs or the hard way of going out every couple of weeks pulling them off of your plants and putting them in a jar of soap water. Soap makes a great weapon against pests. Mix one to two tablespoons in with a gallon of water and spray it on your plants. Just make sure you don’t add more than two tablespoon of soap as it will dry out the leaves. Natural soap pesticide will not only help with the potato beetle but with a lot of other pests that invade your garden. If you don’t feel like going out and spraying your plants every day during growing season, start repelling insects from the beginning by planting certain types of vegetables and flowers. Chives, rosemary, basil, radishes, marigolds, and white geraniums are all natural insect repellants. These flowers are also very beautiful and the vegetables are tasty. Victory is yours! Q: What TV show has no theme song/music?
Kyle says, “Don’t let our relatively short time in business fool you. Whatever your needs we are here to help you, and we will do it with great attitudes and fair pricing. Our success is measured by your happiness. We want a long term relationship with you.”

achieve this by adding a couple plants to your room. Plants remove toxins from the air and add oxygen, as well as creating a peaceful, healthy atmosphere.
Aromatherapy Speaking of therapeutic, have you ever walked into a room, took a deep breath and felt your spirits lift? This should happen every time you walk into your personal haven. Candles, oil warmers, and incense are all easy, affordable ways to make your room much more relaxing.
Mirror, mirror on the wall Like wall art, mirrors can add style and even make your room seem bigger. Look for some with cool decorative details, like a wrought-iron frame. Then hang the mirror so it faces a window or door and reflects the open space, thus “opening up” your room. If you don’t like the look of mirrors and prefer wall art instead, try tacking a coat rack on the wall and use ribbons to hang your family pictures from the hooks for an interesting and eye-catching way to display pictures!
Got the small bedroom blues?
Look up! Drawing your eye upward when you walk into your room is one way to make your space feel larger than it really is. Add a canopy over your bed to make your ceilings feel higher than they actually are. You can also achieve this affect with your curtains if your bed is placed in front of your window. Painting the walls in neutral tones will make your space feel larger and more open. You can also paint vertical stripes to
draw the eye toward the ceiling and make the room seem instantly larger. If you despise painting, wallpaper with vertical stripes can create the same effect. Create a focal point to downplay the size of the room. In a petite bedroom, an oversized headboard can command attention without being overbearing. You can also move your furniture around to give more room in areas that desperately need it. This is probably the most inexpensive thing you can do for your room to give it a new look and feel while battling its petite size.
Throw it all together You can add paint, a headboard, and maybe even wallpaper to surround the room with a vibrant atmosphere. To create the illusion of depth, begin painting one wall a dark color. If your other walls are white, add vertical striped wallpaper and then throw in a headboard with geometric pattern to tie in the two walls together. For that final flair, throw in a canopy or frame the bed with curtains!
Q: Are you safer being uphill or downhill from a wildfire?
If your bedroom is less room and more bed, there are plenty of different ways you can make your room feel larger and be more versatile.
Finito!

serial fiction
James softens. “I’m sorry things have been difficult lately,” he says, touching her forehead to his own, “but if you ever did had an affair, it would--it would be the end of me.” As he dishes the remaining non-burnt eggs onto separate plates and runs the skillet under cold water, he realizes how entirely melodramatic that speech had been. Of course it wouldn’t be the end. He’d go on, maybe drink a lot more, take up smoking again, cultivate a habit of reading existentialist literature at night. The important thing is not to allow my emotions to get carried away, he thinks. “Or you know what,” he says aloud, “you do whatever you feel you need to do. If you want to levitate around the bedroom with some big-headed, Faust-quoting freak, I won’t stop you. Just don’t expect me to stick around. I’ll pack some clothes in a blanket and head to Peru.” She grabs his hands, fixing a stare on him with a tenderness that disarms his resolve. Then she laughs abruptly and says: “Peru, huh?” “That’s right, somewhere on the beach. I’ll live in a cave and eat sand crabs. I’ll grow my hair long and scare off any tourist that dares pass my cave.” “That would be a truly sad fate, my love,” she says, gently running her fingers through his hair, his anger dissolving under her touch. “Also, it would be very inconvenient,” she continues, “because you wouldn’t have the slightest clue how to go about catching a fish. And so I’d have to follow you to Peru, and bring meals to your cave on a daily basis for penitence.” “I wouldn’t accept your meals,” he informs her, leaning his head into her left hand as she caresses his cheek. “I’d take them and throw them all into the sea.” “But then you’d starve. Besides, just not having any coffee would be the tragic end of James Doers.” “It doesn’t matter,” he says. “Then no wonder it terrifies you,” she responds. There is less concern in her eyes, he thinks, and something more directly resembling both amusement and desire. He wraps his arms around her. His face falls towards hers, as he leans into a kiss.
IX. Samuel turns from the window with a heavy heart, reminded of the last time he’d seen Vanessa alive. She had been sitting on a bench, by a lake. They hadn’t spoken since the day she had told him she was leaving. Unable to stay away, he would often watch her from afar as she read. He smiles, still able to see her on that park bench, reading her books. One day it would be poetry, the next it would be Schopenhauer. She hated being interrupted while reading. If someone were to approach her and ask her about the book, she would have been curt. Not out of any personal desire to be rude, but simply because all she wanted was to be left alone with her thoughts, with the birds and squirrels dancing around her feet. Sometimes she would see him passing by, even though he had always taken the utmost care to be discreet. He would wear a 50
wide brimmed hat, a coat with the collar upturned. Still, they would make eye contact. Sometimes she would smile. Other times she would nod or wave. Mostly, Sam tried to avoid her notice. He’d approach her bench only in the midst of crowds of people. He’d wear even wider brimmed hats, and higher collars, even sunglasses. He’d fight the creeping sensation that she could feel his presence. He was forever watchful, trembling with the fear of being spotted. This was enough for a while: just to see her sitting there, her fingers gently turning each page, her body delicately sensing his own. Eventually, this became too strong a habit. Fearing that one day it would become a meaningless routine, he decided to write her instead. He resolved to walk by and drop the letter into her lap, then disappear into the crowd. Everything had been normal that day, comfortable, even. He remembers a gentle breeze, the way the cumulous clouds had crept across the sky like cows grazing in a blue meadow. Samuel had been full of anticipation, until he discovered her empty bench. Samuel felt all his frustrated desire roll itself into a ball that proceeded to lodge in his esophagus. He slowly made his way toward the bench, and found upon it her copy of Schopenhauer. And upon that, a single red rose. He picked up the rose and pressed his fingertip into one of the thorns. His fingers trembled from the pain, but his stomach felt less queasy. It occurred to him to pick up the book. He wanted its feel to make his memories of Vanessa concrete again, palpable. He wanted to run his fingers through the pages she had so often turned. He flipped open the cover. On it, in large black letters, was written: “Sam, your love has been my constant companion. Now I’m leaving in the hope of discovering myself. I am more afraid now than ever, but still, I must tell you that the thought of your love has kept me here this long. Don’t ask me if it has been worth it. Just, please...remember me.” Strange, he remembers: when he first read that note, he didn’t feel much sadness. He had only felt love. She was gone, yes, and maybe he would never see her again… but at that moment, he felt closer to her than he had in a very long time. He remembers sitting down at the bench and gently running his fingers up and down the stem of the rose, gliding over its thorns, with a sense that he would never feel more love than he then possessed for this one sad woman, lost in her ideas like a child lost in the woods, looking for breadcrumb trails that had already been eaten by pigeons. Now, standing outside of James and Sarah’s house, Sam realizes his prophecy has proven correct. Even now, so many years later, that feeling has never left him, even if all others have. So he leans against a tree, focusing his eyes on the window. If William is correct, he thinks, Sarah will leave the house tonight, and then I will see her sneak through the back door. And I will follow her. This concludes Chapter 1. Read the entire chapter and beginning of Chapter 2 at JoshuaDillonNovel.wordpress.com.
