letter from CHAIRMAN The LDS Business and Professionals’ Association has been set up with 3 main purposes in mind
Association: We want to provide a forum for like-minded professionals to build friendships and support. Learning: Learning is a life-long process. The association wishes to provide a forum where members can learn from individuals with recognised talent, expertise and leadership. Contribution: As we mature in our business and professions we wish to ‘give back’, not just within our association but also to the wider community. As a result of the various seminars and forums held over the past couple of years, we are seeing an increase in the mentoring being done with a wide variety of people. Young to old are having the benefit of being able to bounce ideas off those with more experience. This mentoring is invaluable to those starting out or experiencing difficulties at a particular time in their career or business development. As church members we feel ‘giving back’ is a way of showing gratitude for blessings received. Over the coming year we would like to expand our data base and build a directory. We would appreciate the forwarding of names and contact details of your LDS business friends and professional associates so we can invite them to join the association. any members might think of welfare as a program to help members in temporarily difficult circumstances. But the intent of the Church’s welfare plan is much more vast; it also involves promoting selfreliance as a way of life. President Thomas S. Monson has taught that self-reliance “the ability, commitment, and effort to provide the necessities of life for self and family” is an essential element of our temporal and spiritual well-being. aybe you wanted to get a degree but you never had the chance or the confidence to go to university? If you did miss out, then the good news is that the church has made a pathway for you to get a second chance. The pathway is called “BYU Pathway” now available in 136 countries. That now includes NZ, in Auckland, Hamilton and Northland with the potential for it to be extended to other locations in future years as the need may arise. The church has made it very accessible for you by keeping the cost down to $50US a credit,

dramatically *less than other institutions. All you have to do to qualify for this program is: Be a member of the LDS Church. You can be any age and you don’t even have to be “active.” However, you do have to physically show up at an institute class once a week on a Thursday evening, for an institute class and a review of the week’s learning plus a little leadership training. The intention here is to get you studying by prayer and by faith. You’ll also get the social support of other students, people just like you. The stewards for this wonderful second chance
program here in Hamilton, NZ are Brother & Sister Chrisohoou. Sister Chrisohoou said, “I am constantly talking to parents that inquire for their children and end up signing themselves for the program as well.” Once you have completed your first year, you get the option to matriculate to the BYU Idaho Online Degree Program. T
here is a perception that an apprenticeship is second best to a university degree. However, a recent UK study has revealed that young people who take apprenticeships are more likely to stay in work, pay more taxes and live longer – and yet the worth of an apprenticeship is undersold by employers and schools. 5 Reasons why you would choose an Apprenticeship: 1 - You can get your career off to a flying start. An apprenticeship can be a fast track to higher income and leadership, if that’s what you want 2 - You gain confidence by working in a real world

environment as opposed to coming out of university and still lacking experience. 3 - There is no student loan, no tuition fees and possibly no debt. You get paid a reasonable income depending on the industry and if there are any training costs they are usually met by the government. 4 - There are around 100 different types of apprenticeships to choose from in NZ everything from Arborist to Baker to Jockey to Sign Writer. 5 - You don’t have to spend all of your time in a library with your nose buried in books. We asked Nephi Tehei a building
apprentice at J Keen Building Ltd (pictured) why he took the apprenticeship option? Nephi says “I’m a practical kind of person and loved the idea of being outside. I didn’t want to be stuck inside reading all the time when I could be outside and getting paid for it.” Jarrod Keen of J Keen Building Ltd also added “For me as an employer it’s good to have an apprentice join the team, for 4 reasons: • I get to try out their attendance record • I see their ‘on the job performance’ • I see if their personality fits the current team

“W
e all have leadership abilities,” says Shaun Holtz a leader at Alpha Wolf Academy in Hamilton. “You can’t lie to a dog and you can’t get it to do what you want through force alone. You must have Powerful Assertive Calm Energy (PACE).” “If you have the right components, that is a powerful, assertive and calm energy, the dog cannot help but obey - it’s in their DNA.” Shaun goes on to explain, “When people are in the zone playing basketball, or meditating they are manifesting a powerful, calm, assertive energy and that’s what it takes to get your dog to do what you want it to do.” Alpha Wolf Academy takes troubled teens and gives them a chance to learn how to create PACE. Often these teens come from a background
where they do not trust authority figures or adults. But through the bond they create with their dog, these teens can get in touch with their own leadership skills that lie untapped within them. Once they tap this energy ‘Mau Ngoi’ and learn to cultivate it, the troubled teens find they can achieve much more than just train an obedient dog. They learn that by being obedient to natural laws, they can change their own lives, circumstances and opportunities.
“The student can muscle up on the dog or beg it to be obedient, but once they learn how to control their own energy, the sky is the limit as to what can be personally achieved,” says Shawn. For example, if the student
uses positive posture and tone the dog will come, go or sit and this instant bio-feedback is extremely rewarding to the student. It shows them where they need to be energetically in order to get the dogs to listen. Shaun and the students work with dogs that are already trained. But the Alpha Wolf Academy also have a working relationship with the SPCA and the pound. So the program benefits the dogs, the students and the community at large. Mau Ngoi is the name given to this powerful energetic state. The students learn by hands on experience how to get ‘in sync’ with the animal(s). They also learn how to get themselves out walking, caring for the dogs and de-stressing in nature. “They can then take this energy into their existing relationships or a job,” he says. Shaun is a co-creator of the Alpha Wolf Academy with Hanchi TeHurinui Murphy the programs developer and lead facilitator. Shaun is also a qualified social worker, has a passion for discipline, fitness and the martial arts. lways behind the camera and never in front Garth Watene has a passion for making Maori content, documentaries, news and especially dramatic films. He is a one man band but calls in other specialists should he need them, like technical people. He also produces and directs the drama. One of his current projects is a group of 5 short Faith Promoting films called ‘LDS Short Films NZ’ vol 1. Garth received a $10,000 Grant from the LDS Business Association to assist him with the costs of production. Here is a preview of what you can expect:

Garth is a graduate of the
Launching Leaders Program. Launching Leaders is about to be kicked off again in Hamilton and Auckland. Launching Leaders is targeted at return missionaries and young marrieds. It’s a 12 week course to help them start their own business and be their own boss. Garth’s advice to talented members of the church working in jobs they don’t like, or not working at all is to give the Launching Leaders Program a shot. The programme will take them by the hand and lead them through the basics and also give them the faith they need, to start from nothing and go forward.q
