ANNEKE JENKINS From Chronic Fatigue to Aspiring Olympic Triathlete By Mark Fantham

Sport has been in my life since my earliest memories. At school I competed in netball, volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, swimming, x-country and athletics. I began focusing on swimming competitively at about 17 years old and that continued for the next 4 years.

My Struggle with Chronic Fatigue International competitive swimming lead to me training myself into the ground and getting sick; I developed glandular fever. Believing more training was the way to good health, my mistake was that I hadn’t fully recovered from the glandular fever. I developed chronic fatigue syndrome. It wasn’t just my body shutting down – I was dealing with the emotional struggles of both my parents being diagnosed with cancer. All at once I had multiple factors contributing to my battle for energy. When chronic fatigue was confirmed, I went home to Tauranga (I had been training in Wellington) to recover – thinking it would be for a few weeks.

I never went back to Wellington.

Recovering took two years. The first year was mainly resting. I was still trying to swim small amounts. But I started working part time and changed my focus from swimming to study. The mental change in direction helped me a lot. I was emotionally drained and it was hard trying to swim, knowing it wasn’t working. A year into study and I was relishing the new challenge. My energy levels started returning. A good rest and letting my mind relax helped so much. I removed the pressure of my swimming goals.

That’s when I began to jog or swim without looking at the clock, just for fun.

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

Triathlon began for me in 2012 and the first year involved only light, cautious training. Since then, things have taken off for me. I’m now training with the International Training Squad under Darren Smith. Even though I have only been in the sport a short time, I love it. I’m excited about what I might achieve. I learn so much every day from the environment I am in – about what it takes to be a world-class athlete. Experiencing what Darren has created, I know I am lucky to be working with him. My goal is the Rio 2016 Olympics. I still push too hard at times, but I am improving on reining it in. Darren has been excellent in helping me manage my training. In my head I keep going, but the body can’t – it needs rest to achieve peak performance.

My biggest challenge for the future? Managing my body and limits. I have good people around me and am learning about what my body can handle every day. Working through chronic fatigue syndrome and coming out the other side, makes me even more determined. I know what I want to be – I know I can get there – where I am now is on the path to make it happen.

THOUGHTS FROM THE EDITOR In the next few pages, you’ll discover some self-care secrets that are not widely known or promoted – secrets that you can use right now to look good and feel younger. True inner beauty is a function of the food you eat, the exercise you get, the thoughts that you think, and the quality of your sleep. It has really helped me in my life to take advice from the right people. The following are experts in their field and are worth listening to. Aroha nui. STRESS MAKES YOU FAT, DUMB AND UNHAPPY Reverse this through Meditation By Mark Fantham

Typically when you are overweight you tend to think about it in terms of over-eating or under-exercising. But, you may be undersleeping or over-stressing your way fat. Are you exercising like a beast, counting your calories like a miser and yet you are not seeing the results you want? Maybe you have even gotten fatter?

Here is why… Your Hypothalamus (considered the master gland in your brain) connects your Nervous System to your Endocrine System. Your Nervous System controls how you perceive and sense the world. Your Endocrine System is what produces your hormones. So, if your perception of reality is stressed, skewed or you are continually seeing negativity, it’s going to affect your sleep, your 3

hunger, your energy levels, your ability to concentrate, to heal and your ability to lose unwanted belly fat – to name a few.

How can you lose your ‘love handles’ if you are stressing out because you just got a bill from the utility company that is over inflated and unexpected? To burn fat you need to be in an anabolic state for longer and deeper periods. However, if you are continually producing catabolic hormones (like Cortisol and Adrenaline), they will suppress your immune function and raise your blood sugar because of a perceived threat.

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

It’s putting the systems that are not deemed to be important on hold while it deals with the perceived threat. If your body thinks that you are under some kind of personal threat, the last thing it is going to be concerned about is losing your ‘love handles.’ This utility bill is the modern equivalent of being chased by a sabre-toothed tiger. And the catabolic hormones that have just turned on are part of your fight/flight response, which is trying to save your life against a perceived threat. Your perception is your reality.

So we need to pay attention to how we handle the stresses in our lives. We could be in a complete state of bliss if

that’s where we focus our attention. Or, we could be in a debilitated state if we are focused on negative thoughts. Meditation has been around for thousands of years and it’s an effective way to deal with modern stress, be it physical, mental, emotional or environmental. Meditation teaches you how to let go of the attachment you have to negative influences like stress. However, as it is of ancient origin, it’s really only been a resource for the intensely enquiring mind like monks and martial artists prepared to go into the remote mountains and live the lifestyle associated with it’s origins.

Up until now… Tristan Trustcott, a good friend of mine has taken this ancient practice and made it more user friendly for us Westerners. The biggest improvement I have ever made to my own personal health was learning how to meditate and you can learn too. Free Guided Meditation Movie

ORGANIC HAIR COLOURING WITHOUT THE HARMFUL CHEMICALS What's that Disgusting Smell in Most Hair Salons? By Mark Fantham

Have you ever walked into a hairdressing salon and wondered what the heck that smell is? It’s protein cooking. Yep, it’s hair being cut, washed, dried and treated with chemicals.

Finally…a Hair Stylist that doesn’t use harmful-chemicals - only natural ingredients that have been certified organic. Soulstyle is a salon in Christchurch, New Zealand that uses organic plant extracts to dye your hair. It’s called Color Herbe and it’s derived from such things as walnuts and rhubarb to name a few. Ammonia and Hydrogen Peroxide are routinely mixed together in most salons, but not in Soulstyle. These 2 chemicals when mixed together form highly toxic 5

gases called chloramines, which are carcinogenic. Why would you knowingly expose yourself or your family to that if you didn’t have to? Thankfully you don’t have to breathe these fumes or have that toxic sludge applied to your hair, when you use organic products. Everything in the Soulstyle Salon is organic right down to the coffee and milk. Yes, even the cleaning products.

Deanna Lyons of Soulstyle says, “The harmful-chemicalfree hair products and the Kiwiana environment in the salon provide the kind of experience that women travel miles for.”

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

Deanna has clients that regularly fly in from Wellington and Canberra. Have you heard about the woman that takes an 11-hour round trip bus ride in from Twizel? The salon has become so popular it appears on a documentary called Our Green Roadie.

Deanna also adds, “As part of the experience, every customer has a senior stylist that applies the colour unlike other salons that would use junior/intermediate stylists for the application.” The kind of person that wants an organic cut and colour is going to be someone that is concerned about the rising level of

toxic exposure in their lives. Particularly, sensitive people, chemo patients, new mums, people suffering from allergies or women that want an organic and natural experience – like going to a retreat. Now you are probably wondering what an experience like this would cost? No more than what you would regularly pay at any other salon. The prices are comparable.

So if you want to get a new hair do and you want to take the healthier option, call Deanna to make an appointment, as they are regularly booked ahead.

EATING PALEO Is it a Fad and What's all the Fuss About? By Sara Evans, Behavioural Nutritionist

The Paleo Diet is based upon contemporary modern versions of food, that mimics what was eaten by our pre-agricultural huntergatherer ancestors. Eating Paleo gives you loads of energy, great health, improves mental clarity and reduces that unwanted body fat.

As a busy Mum of 2 young children and as a Nutritionist, I believe in making life as easy as possible. Eating Paleo foods is a fantastic lifestyle choice and as a Nutritionist, I aim to make that transition as easy and stress-free as possible. I encourage people to incorporate the Paleo principles not as a diet but as a lifestyle approach and therefore suggest people do their best to follow the guidelines 80% of the time. 7

The remaining 20% allows you to use items which wouldn’t always be considered Paleo, but are generally pretty good and always better than eating highly processed foods.

Being time poor doesn’t mean you can’t eat Paleo. Paleo advocates often refer to grass fed meats and organic produce. However, I take a ‘do the best you can’ approach to this. I can’t afford free-range chicken all the time and I am happy to use good old Tegel. Do the best you can with what you have – this will make eating great food a maintainable habit. No one wants to spend all their free time in the kitchen, so my secret weapon is a slow cooker. The best Paleo options are always ones that

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

are simple and use fresh ingredients. Turn your slow cooker on low in the morning and come home to the smell of a yummy cooked dinner.

Bonus: There are always leftovers for your lunch the next day.

You can throw in:

Paleo is here to stay and Sara takes the thinking out of it all by providing meal plans, recipes, a primal exercise prescription and an online support group with a 10 week challenge via the Simple Tasty Nutrition website.

- a defrosted whole chicken - an onion - garlic - salt - pepper and - water Then, serve with steamed vegetables.

Or you could use:

- a leg of lamb (or piece of beef) - can of tomatoes - olive oil - garlic - fresh or dried rosemary - salt and pepper

Elora Harre is the Simple Tasty Nutrition spokesperson and she has lost 44kg in the last year. Her and Sara do Paleo Seminars and are aiming to be in the North Island in 2014 – check their website for more details. Get an Initial Nutrition Assessment via Skype for $60 (usually $80) if you mention this article.

Then, serve with baked vegetables.

Often I make a massive family curry; I simply grab a curry paste from the supermarket, such as Asian gourmet Tikka Masala or Korma, a kilo of diced beef, diced mushrooms, an onion and coconut cream and then, serve on steamed pumpkin.

FAT LOSS: GET THIS 1 TRICK SORTED OR YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME How Coconut Sugar Stopped Me Binging By Mark Fantham

They say it takes the average person seven attempts to give up smoking before they are actually successful. I am a 52 and part Polynesian/Maori and I can put on belly fat by just walking past a doughnut or at least it seems. The amount of times I have tried to lose fat honestly and failed just can’t be counted. That was until I discovered Coconut Sugar, which is now my secret weapon against unwanted fat.

The biggest problem in a diet or a fat loss program is being tempted and falling off the wagon. If you have deprived your body of carbs – like you do in a fat loss diet and you fall off the wagon …you really fall off – it’s called binging, sound familiar?

9

As an endomorph, I easily put on muscle or fat, so I cut out sugar and bread. That’s great for a while and in the first 2 or 3 days you see the inches around your waist dropping. It’s very encouraging and everything is great …until you hit the wall. That’s when you have taken the carb depletion a little bit too far and now your blood sugar is so low, you are the grumpiest so and so ever.

It’s while you are under this kind of stress, that you end up having say one piece of pie/cake and it tastes soooo good… next thing, there is an empty plate and you realize you went… way overboard, yet again. It’s like “Deja Vu” … Who ate all the Pies?

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

If any of this sounds familiar to you, don’t give up hope, because with a slight adjustment you can fix this and unchain yourself from the cyclic behavior.

excess sugar out of your blood stream. And it’s stored as fat. Spike your GI => You get Fat, even if you haven’t exceeded your calorie count for the day.

Your brain needs sugar in the form of glucose just to function properly. That means that you have to have sugar of some kind, just to get through a day. The question you should be asking yourself is, “How can I get an alternative sugar, to the ‘White Death’ I am currently consuming that has no negative affects?”

But what if you could satisfy your craving, get the carbs you need and avoid the spike? You can… and the knowledge of this is fundamental to not screwing up the good work you have done, or worse – going on a binge.

Is raw or brown sugar ok? No, it isn’t, as it’s all refined to white sugar first and then molasses added back to it to

Coconut sugar is the most delicious, sweet and healthy alternative to any ‘supermarket sugar.’ It’s made from the sap of the flowering coconut palm. The sap is collected, dried and bagged – no refining. It’s all natural and good for you. It’s full of Amino acids, vitamins and minerals – “Finally, a sugar that is actually good for you!”

Coconut Sugar was the game changer for me. It helped me loose the ‘spare tyre’ and feel good about myself again. So if you want to stop feeling like a failure and get some go forward in your plans for a new you in 2014, you had better get some quick from the Matakana SuperFoods website, or call their team to order.

HOW TO BECOME MORE SEXUALLY APPEALING Use Cleavage, Mystery, Dress & Confidence to Attract By Angela Stone, Style Coach

Cleavage Cleavage is great, but too much cleavage will not work in your favour. Don’t leave too little to the imagination – you want people to keep on guessing. If you’re going to show cleavage, don’t show too much leg. If you are going to be displaying your pins, keep cleavage to a minimum. In saying that, do not try and hide your curves, learn to enhance them! It’s learning to find a balance.

Mystery Every one has the ability to exude subtle sex appeal. Don’t tell your life story to someone you are meeting for the first time. That trust is something they will have to earn and will probably enjoy earning. Keep people guessing; the more mystery, the more they will want to find out. If you do talk about 11

yourself in conversation, keep it interesting and make sure you ask questions in return to show interest.

Dress to Impress It’s a known fact that men are drawn to women in rouge; red is the colour of love after all. Don that red dress and ruby lipstick and you will be channeling your inner femme fatale in no time. Red influences passion, learn to create allure with your bold choice of colour. Another step to increasing your appeal is learning to dress well, emphasise your best attributes and minimise those you deem unfavourable. Invest in a few fragrances. Find a perfume that suits you but, does not overwhelm. Ensure that you are always immaculately groomed and have enough sleep at night.

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

Confidence Sex Appeal is almost indefinable, but it is a power that we all possess. What gauges a lot of interest in a person is their confidence. A lady who holds her self with poise and self-belief is automatically more attractive than a woman who does not.

“You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be someone that hates peaches.” – Dita Von Teese

Make direct eye contact and speak clearly but don’t let your confidence come across as arrogance. Give off the impression you don’t need any one to tell you that you are beautiful. Both men and women are more likely to feel secure with someone who is already secure with who they are. At the end of the day not everyone is going to find you appealing. Don’t take it personally.

Increase sex appeal with...

LOSE AND DISCOVER YOURSELF THROUGH CHOCOLATE Food of the Gods By Mark Fantham

The Ancient American’s in pre-Columbian times used Chocolate (Theobroma Cacao) as a food and a medicine. In fact, chocolate was so highly regarded that they also used it as a currency alongside gold.

Could it be that the Ancient Americans knew and valued chocolate for it’s full potential? They drank it, prepared in it’s strength, with local spices like chilli, for example. It was said that a soldier could march a whole day on one cup full. As a mild stimulant, it can make you feel awake, alert and strong. This is not the chocolate you get from a supermarket, but the raw and unprocessed chocolate made by hand with low temperatures, preserving the natural properties and 13

quality of the chocolate.

Raw Chocolate (Cacao) has the highest naturally occurring Magnesium of any food in the world. Stress causes your body to consume magnesium faster than anything. Is it any wonder then, that eating chocolate has a therapeutic value? In 1996, it was discovered that chocolate also contains a ‘bliss chemical’ called Anandamide. It’s believed that chocolate is the only food to contain this bliss chemical which makes you feel ‘high’ – similar to having completed a work out. It is a natural pleasure molecule that fits into the cannabinoid receptor sites of the cells of the nervous system. Anandamide has been associated with improving motivation and

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

increasing pleasure. Joe Vinson of the university of Scranton, Pennsylvania states that “Chocolate’s antioxidants are much higher then anything else available.”

Antioxidants attach to the free radicals and remove them from the body. The cacao bean is exceptionally high in antioxidants. Oranges have 750 antioxidant units / 100gs Blueberries 2,400, and the… Cacao Bean over 14,000. At She Chocolate in Christchurch (SHE is

an acronym for Spiritual Human Evolution) …they offer a range of dark and extra dark chocolate bars and cacao beans. But they do it like no one else. They do it gluten free, dairy free, sugar free, vegetarian, and vegan according to your special dietary requirements. And… with a secret ingredient. The secret ingredient is INTENTION… a spiritual intention.

Oonagh Browne of SHE Chocolat explains the intention associated with their chocolate, “Several years ago, I was soul searching for something more in my life, when I discovered a moving meditation that changed my life called The Form – Reality Practice.” At the same time, I also discovered a love of creating with chocolate. All my friends loved it and I started exploring a whole new realm where I could express inner creativity and my inner voice through the union of spirituality and chocolate. Everyday the team at She open the day by connecting and moving with a meditation called ‘The Form’ and continue the day by putting their love and creativity into their chocolate creations. You can buy this special chocolate from their shop, double decker bus or from their website.

RELIEF FROM BACK, SHOULDER, HIP, KNEE AND ANKLE PAIN Using Acupuncture By Mark Fantham

Are you an athlete suffering from Back, Shoulder, Hip, Knee and or Ankle Pain? Or maybe you are working on a fitness/fat loss program and it’s come to a complete halt due to an injury? I recently hurt the back of my knee doing vertical jumps, probably from not warming up enough. I was hobbling about with the problem not getting any better. People said to me, “Have you been to see a doctor? Get yourself an anti-inflammatory drug.” These drugs typically upset the good bacteria in your stomach, which will be detrimental to your overall health; they may ease your pain for a short spell 15

(if they work), but they will never address the original problem.

What I needed wasn’t a pill, but someone that had expertise in an ancient therapy that had proven itself over hundreds of years – like Acupuncture. And, someone that could administer it to me based on his or her maturity, knowledge and expertise. Angela Harding is a Kiwi Girl that has studied Acupuncture and Kung Fu for many years. She has been around enough to know, understand and have seen many injuries and fixed them.

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

A normal response to an injury is for your body to surround the area with inflammation. This is to tell you to slow down and it also protects the area from further injury. Acupuncture is a very effective way to get your body to naturally stimulate your antiinflammatory processes, without the use of any toxic drugs, which will invariably give you side effects.

Acupuncture is based on the idea that energy flows (Qi – pronounced ‘chee’) through your body on certain pathways called meridians. Pain is caused by the Qi being blocked within a meridian, due to an injury or disease. It’s like being stuck in traffic – it feels painful.

Acupuncture is also used for: Arthritis, Stress, Irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, High blood pressure, Insomnia, Digestive disorders, Mental health and Emotional issues, Addiction and Drug dependence, Sinusitis, Hay fever, and the Common cold, Constipation, Brain fog and Attention span issues, Cravings, Menopause symptoms, Smoking, Skin ailments, Bladder and Kidney difficulties, Sciatica, Migraines and Tendonitis – to name a few.

If you live in Christchurch and you are hurting, give Angela a call and talk about how she can get you back to whatever it was you were doing before the injury.

Inserting needles into various acu-points gets the flow of Qi moving again; it restores health and most people say how relaxing it feels.

All manner of things were dealt with using acupuncture for hundreds of years before someone came up with the profitable idea that pain is dealt with using pharmacology.

ANTI-AGING AND BEAUTY USING NZ BLACKCURRANTS Are NZ Blackcurrants the Number One Superfood in the World? By Mark Fantham

The NZ variety of Blackcurrant is richer in flavour, more intense in aroma and colour, and higher in nutrition than blackcurrants grown in other countries. The unique climate in NZ causes the blackcurrants to have higher levels of anthocyanins, polyphenolics, other antioxidants and bioactives – 3 times the amount of other countries. Part of your aging process is called oxidation. When metal rusts, that is oxidation. Your body is made of minerals. When you look at someone’s appearance, you see his or her minerals. The aging 17

process is like your body rusting and the powerful anti-oxidants in blackcurrants slow down this process– perhaps better than any other superfood, so the research says.

When you see a healthy and beautiful individual, you will notice that the colour of their eyes is really vibrant. The white of their eyes is really white. The clarity of their skin and eyes is quite special. If you want some of this, you need a powerful anti-oxidant that can combat the free radicals floating around in your system caused

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

by processed foods and environmental pollution. What you need is an easy to get and powerful antioxidant every day, as part of your diet. You would have to go a long way to find something better than NZ Blackcurrants. Sujon, a NZ company in Nelson, produce blackcurrants in a powdered form – for easy convenient use, and they are highly potent. I am a pretty health conscious kind of person and I have been eating berries for many years because I value the antioxidation benefits that only berries can supply. Typically I have them for breakfast on my oats or just with other fruit.

get myself frozen berries. They would usually be boysenberries, the cheapest alternative, or if I was feeling flush, I might get blueberries, a little more expensive. Frozen berries when you are travelling is not a good idea and I happened to see the Sujon Blackcurrant Powder; it was a little more expensive but I thought it was worth a try. If you want to eat a delicious berry every day, say for breakfast whether you are travelling or not, the powered blackcurrant has got to be the wisest choice. It will store longer and it’s so convenient to just sprinkle a spoonful onto my morning porridge.

Because it’s so concentrated, I didn’t need as much as I thought I would – so the packet lasted me a whole month, which meant it was indeed cost effective. I recently read where blackcurrants were a superior source of anti-aging phyto-chemicals, so I thought I would give them a try. It’s hard to get fresh berries every day, so my strategy was to

HERBALISTS & DOCTORS How You can Benefit from Knowing the Difference By Mark Fantham

There was a time when Doctors consulted with patients and gave out the medication too; Pharmacology has only been around about 40 years now. If you have a broken leg and you are talking to a doctor then you’re in the right place because in our western society, doctors have stewardship over accident and emergency medicine, surgery, obstetrics, orthopedics and radiography – to name a few.

If on the other hand, you had symptoms consistent with disease, then you ought to know that the oldest and most trusted and proven person to see is a Medical Herbalist. 19

90% of what people go to the doctor for are lifestyle related problems. Your doctor may chat with you for 2 minutes and then promptly send you to a pharmacy. They are only treating the symptoms and not getting to the actual cause. If it’s lifestyle related, then you need a lifestyle change to fix it. A Medical Herbalist will talk with you at length; a consultation can take an hour. They try to help you set up your life so you can win. That is a completely different approach to the modern pharmacology paradigm. I have had some sleeping challenges of recent times and I decided to try a herbal approach. So I went to see a Herbalist named Wendy. She took the time to try and understand my individual lifestyle challenges and gave me a natural herbal remedy called Valerian Root Extract.

CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY GUIDE

Apart from it tasting like the inside of a sweaty gumboot, it actually worked like a natural sedative with a calming effect on my body. And unlike a pharmacy based sedative, it didn’t have any side effects or hangover. If you have a Beauty, Weight or Health issue, then maybe you ought to consider talking with a Medical Herbalist. “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” A wise quote from Hippocrates

more and more drugs, but we are actually getting sicker. Clearly, something is not adding up.

The very definition of a drug is that they are ‘toxic’ and that is why they can only be handled by someone that has a licence to do so. Hippocrates also stated: “Medicine should do no harm.” In today’s world, prescription medicine does do harm. Each prescription halts enzyme activity and causes unwanted side effects. And to make it all much worse, most of today’s ‘food’ is processed, pre-packaged and preserved – devoid of enzymes, chock full of additives you can’t pronounce, also causing harm to the body. Add these together and you have an epidemic.

Get back to nature, get back to the basics – good food and good medicine is the same thing. What cures disease, also prevents disease.

WILL LIFTING WEIGHTS MAKE ME BULKY AND YUCK? Muscle Building, Weight Loss and Choosing the Right Way to Exercise By Nathan Macgregor, Personal Trainer

There are so many different concepts and training tools – that for the modern woman who is looking at ways to become healthier, stronger and more confident, the options can seem daunting. Many women have preconceived ideas about exercise and believe that weight training will make them bulky and unfeminine. However, the truth is quite the opposite. Pictured above is a mature woman in very good condition. If you are drug free and have average genetics you will never be more muscular than she is no matter how much you lift.

Muscle Building Simply put, muscle building requires testosterone, the male sex hormone, and women lack the amount of testosterone required to build the amount of muscle that a male can. In comparison, males have between 300 – 1000ng/dl (nanogram per decelitre), whereas females only average around 25 – 90ng/dl. A slight natural increase in testosterone levels by weight training can help the process of muscle building, but not enough to make you look masculine.

Body Fat Loss If someone tells you that you can reduce body fat from a specific area on your body then you need to run in the other direction! When your body burns body fat, even if you are working a specific area of the body,

it will not burn off fat from just that particular area. Your body likes to look after itself and body fat from around the stomach, hips, butt and upper thighs will be ‘stubborn’ because it surrounds your reproductive organs. Our bodies are programmed to protect these and insulate them with a layer of fat.

Doing Exercises Right Now you might say, “Ok Nathan I do squats and lunges, but my butt and legs aren’t getting any better”, or “I do lots of crunches, but I can’t see my abs.”

Like there’s a right way to drive a car, there is a right way to do exercises. For a lot of people, some exercises will not work to the best of their ability due to a biomechanical issue. A biomechanical issue or muscle imbalance/tightness just means that your body doesn’t move in the way it should and that certain muscles do not activate or fire like they should.

would be to chat with a professional trainer who can assist you in achieving your exercise goals, it’ll be worth it!

This results in other muscles compensating, which also means you are not shaping up your legs and butt with those squats you have been doing. It’s a lot to take on board and my suggestion

PEAR, ORANGE AND CUCUMBER SALAD WITH ROASTED ALMONDS RECIPE How to Create a Balanced Meal Using Protein, Carbs & Fat By Mark Fantham

When you go to a restaurant and order a main meal, like a steak for example, it’s really common to be brought a plate with only a steak and fries on it. If you want something more balanced, you have to order a side salad as well.

So it’s really common for people in NZ to not get a balanced meal as frequently as they need to, which is every meal. Simo (of Mosaic by Simo) realised this when he first came to NZ from Morocco and that’s why when you eat at Simo’s, you will experience a well-balanced meal on every plate. A well-balanced meal means that you must 25

be able to look at the plate and identify each Macronutrient eg. Protein, Carbs and Fat. And the amount of each nutrient should be balanced. If not, then you have an unfinished meal. That is one contributing factor to people being malnourished and obese. When Simo creates a dish – any dish, you can not only identify the Protein, Carbs and Fat, but the combinations are exciting and delicious. Take his Pear, Orange and Cucumber Salad for example…
