Alber Elbaz tests his WINTER vocals for EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN 2012Lanvin 7

Zoom in: Lanvin “Edgy and sophisticated, with a touch of enchanting eccentricity...what’s not to love.”

For autumn/winter Alber Elbaz cooked up an eyepopping, sculptural and lavish affair with intense color, exotic furs, body-enhancing shapes and clever, playful cuts. This collection was womanly and fun. Waist flounces, pencil skirts and lowdipping backs created an enticing curvaceousness, all the while accented by playful additions such as brightly-coloured squirrel and beaver furs, exuberant flower prints on silk and duchesse satin and heavy gold brocade. The Lanvin lady can flaunt her womanliness with panache – be it with second-skin lambskin opera gloves in bright red, a cracked patent canvas trench, or our favourite, a long-sleeved flounced-waist dress with ivory techno taffeta strips and black rubber skirting, fastened with a lip-appliqué belt. We adore Elbaz’s sleeveless cropped cardigan in sheared beaver fur with black goatskin shoulders. Edgy and sophisticated, with a touch of enchanting eccentricity...what’s not to love 8

AKRIS Inspired by Franz Kline’s Painting No. 7, Albert Kriemler’s a/w collection for AKRIS was a lesson in graphic patchworking. Cuts were set in block-like panes, suggesting movement and modernity and fabrics and colour were offset in a sensual, suggestive way. Cuffs flared out from beneath tapered sleeves; slashed, belt-fronted dresses sashayed over slim-fit velvet trousers; puffa jackets were cropped at the breast with oversized collars; velvet dresses gave way to sheer, skin-revealing paneling; sequined pyjama suits shimmered on bare shoulders; leather jackets gleamed over wool and cashmere; floor-length dresses skimmed the body in bold ribbed stripes. Colours were rich and earthy. Kline has created a collection that is simple yet dynamic with an air of luxurious, and modern, sophistication. 36

Alberta Ferretti Alberta Ferretti’s woman for autumn/winter is a much sexier version of the delicate Alberta Ferretti woman we are used to. A sense of female fragility was still present, with sheer lace décolletés and exquisitely embroidered chiffons, but this was set against a modern sense of empowerment. Opulent furs were belted tight at the waist, leather gloves were pulled tight up the upper arm, silk dresses revealed strict lines of tailoring, leather jackets kicked out in neat pleats at the hip and bodices gave floor-length gowns an unexpected severity. The predominantly black palette was injected here and there with bold cobalt blue, red, fuchsia and purple. Soft silk, chiffon and cashmere combinations were overlaid with fringing, mesh and leather, striking the perfect dichotomy between strict and sensual.’ 50

Alexander McQueen

Just when you think Sarah Burton can’t get much better … Her autumn/winter collection for Alexander McQueen was a realm of optimism, of a beautiful and light future rooted firmly in the organic world of nature. Hyper-feminine, protected and strong, this was a collection that evolved from buds, or ‘pods’, into vast billowing blooms, cascading gently in a thousand immaculate layers. White wigs and sci-fi visors added an element of power to the gentle blooming of furs, feathers and chiffon. Shape, texture and print bloomed in unison starting at the waist and gradually enveloping the torso, reaching up to the neckline. Trapeze lines, appliqués, silks, laser-cut ponyskin, ostrich feathers, goat fur, Mongolian lambswool, fur pompoms, hand-massaged degradé silks and ruffled organzas… accessorized with hammered metal-harnessed mink boots and knucklebox clutches… this was nothing short of a feast for the eyes – and wouldn’t look amiss in an art museum. Each piece of this otherworldly collection plays its part along Burton’s carefully carved visual, and sensual, evolution. 56

Burberry Prorsum Christopher Bailey’s autumn/winter collection for Burberry Prorsum makes you look forward to those rainy winter days when you can slip on some thick opaque tights and wrap up warm beside a fire. The theme was ‘Town and Field’ which marked the coming together of the earthy colours and heavy textures of the British countryside – think herringbone, wool and waxed parkas – with a laid-back City sophistication. Playful owl, sparrow and dog-motif tees were teemed with velvet pencil skirts, belted at the waist with pretty bow fastenings. Beautifully tailored woolen trench coats flicked out at the waist in structured peplums and ballooned at the hips with playful oversize pockets. Accessories such as girly bow belts, lace-up booties, flat caps, studded gloves and clutches with gold fox heads continued the mixed themes of country bumpkin and city sophisticate. 66

Chanel Lagerfeld’s collection for autumn/winter added a touch of colour and embellishment to the usually monochromatic Chanel palette. Even the models’ eyebrows were adorned with strips of glittering crystals, courtesy of the couture embroidery house, Lesage. Crystals were also sprinkled in abundance on bibs, collars, cuffs, hems and even the heels of the maryjane shoes. In fact, mineralization was a key theme to Lagerfeld’s show for Chanel and he set the scene with giant moonstone crystals protruding from a glass sand base in the Grand Palais. The clothing was adorned with an array of different textures, from sparkling tweeds, to trussed feathered coats, crystal-studded slouchy parkas and shiny metallics. Moonstone colours of purple, green, gold, metallic blue, silver and ochre contrasted beautifully in Cubist-esque geometric prints. The three-piece suit was the centerpiece in terms of shape with the trouser, skirt and jacket combo reigning throughout the collection. Oversized features added to the sense of playfulness with deep pockets, puffy sleeves and A-line swing coats. Oversize cuffs and long leather fingerless gloves in gold, red or purple play the perfect accessory. 78

Chloe This was Clare Waight Keller’s second season at Chloe and she delivered a new, British twist to the classic Chloe we know and love. Casual English sportswear was mixed with a chic French insouciance. Sporty blouson and duffel coats and soft lambskin leather zip-up jackets were paired with woolen turtlenecks and pintuck blouses. Comfort was definitely key from the looks of the stretch wool trousers, maxi blazers and patchwork shearling capes. Waight Keller delivered that clever dress-up dress-down sensibility which the French master so well – demure crepe dresses revealed peekaboo shirt collars and cuffs, wellyshaped booties were made from soft calfskin leather. Oversize coats were paired with tuckedin silk blouses, patchwork capes were made from plush shearling, fur gilets were belted primly at the waist. The palette was classic Chloe – all milky white, yellow, red, taupe, sandalwood and russet browns. 92

Etro Veronica Etro’s collection for autumn/winter was a lesson in how to skillfully take an iconic historical signature and respin it in a new contemporary and refreshing light. Who knew that paisley could be so sexy! Curlicues snaked up waists and wrapped around décolletés. Twisted teardrops in clashing graphic colours stretched across crepe dresses and silk leggings in bodyelongating shapes. The look was elegant and sophisticated, reinforced by luxurious cropped fur capelets, leather and fur peplums flaring from cashmere and velvet, dandy lapels and belted waists. The rich colour foundation of mahogany and burgundy was overlaid with art deco-esque black lines and clashing graphics. A seductive collection that saw the paisley of yesteryear take on a modern and alluring refinement. 100

Giambattista Valli This season, Giambattista Valli added a hard edge to his usually ultra feminine aesthetic. Oversized marled-wool sweaters were worn casually over cropped black trousers, the shirt, sweater and floating knee-length skirt combos had a school girl charm whilst the androgyny of a boucle coat and low-slung cropped trouser look was spiced up with a glint of crocodile-stamped gold. The look was far from aggressive, and there was more than the odd glimpse of the traditional Valli elegance as seen from his beautifully tailored wool-blend and silk-chiffon dresses and skinrevealing lace and tulle, but instead the largely monochrome palette and casual aesthetic simply chartered a refreshing new urbanity, adding a touch of insouciance to a label steeped in refined gracefulness. Colour was injected in the form of bold, graphic, matchy matchy prints and bright red. 112

Gucci Frida Giannini’s collection for autumn/winter was dark and decadent with a hint of neo-gothic. Inspired by the 19th Century, this collection was rich and reeked of broody romanticism. Floor-length slim velvet skirts were teemed with masculine, military style, fur-collared jackets. Leather gloves, bamboo clutches and sheer lace blouses were staples. Jacquered low-crotch, lace-up trousers and shiny leather riding trousers slipped into knee-length, high-heeled leather boots and were paired with billowing neck-fastened capes. Knee-length, lace, bell-sleeved yoke dresses, floor-length gowns in velvet and tulle with navel-plunging necklines, skin-revealing slits to the upper thigh and spatterings of sparkling embroidery. This dramatic and lavish collection was not for the faint-hearted. 128

Haider Ackermann

The collection begins, Ackermann says, with a falling leaf….and just like that, the designer picks the smallest of symbols signaling the dawn of autumn and transports us to a world where the darker days are lit with crisp colour and bear a subtle and suggestive beauty. Ackermann’s designs for AW12 were more pared-down, simplified and less complicated (though no less exquisitely constructed) than his extravagant and exaggerated designs for SS12. This season the hyperbole is gone and in its place stands a quieter, more reserved aesthetic. Ackermann still deftly carved the female form into an impossibly hourglass shape thanks to voluminous necklines, sharp shoulders, those waist-structured belts and gentle billows at the hipline, but it was gentler than the Ackermann physique we’ve seen before. For the more coy among the fashion pack, this collection was a gift in the offing – Haider Ackermann’s precision tailoring, luxurious textures and ultra-rich colours with comforting wearability. The warm sunset hues of red, copper, okra and saffron mixed with cooler plum and indigo shades were set off with a touch of edgy urbanity thanks to gleams of buttery soft leather on laced boots, zipper jackets and beautifully constructed gloves. 140

Jason Wu Jason Wu’s AW12 collection was inspired by his native China. From the Qing dynasty to Mao military, this collection was a varied mix of Chinese opulence. There were traditional fastened necklines, silk crepe de chine and dresses, embellished lace t-shirts, leather pencil skirts, draped silks, tweed and boucle, mink fur collars on military blazers and fur flanks on tailored overcoats, slashed-thigh velvet, belted waists and strong shoulders. We particularly liked Wu’s camel-coloured embellished wool cape paired with leather trousers. The palette was bold and rich with eye-popping fushia pink and red silks splashed between a base of military olive green and black. Wu’s tailoring was sharp and cinched. His eye for detail – from sequins and lace to studded leather – added an extra layer of luxury to an already lavish collection. 152

Jonathan Saunders The oh-so-pretty housewife Saunders presented us with in his collection for SS12 has buttoned up her silk blouse and donned her wintery waffle equestrian coat for an autumn/winter look which veers towards a prim, riding club aesthetic, all the while upholding the signature acid graphic colourfulness of the traditional Saunders palette. The collection is at once androgynous and ladylike: bright acids and mismatching prints on double-breasted jackets are mixed with ribboned Louboutins, floral embroidery, box pleat skirts and soft Japanese-inspired blooms of lilacs. The attraction to Saunders’ collections lies in his skill at managing not just to pull off clashing colour and shape (we’re thinking fluoro turquoise coat and pleated skirt, replete with marigold diamondprint under-jacket and bright magenta graphic buttoned-up shirt), but to make it look desirable… Artistic, alluring and unusual – Saunders’s eccentric collection was a warming invitation to winter. 168

Marchesa The AW12 Marchesa collection was Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig’s second ‘moving’ show and was food for the fairytale-hungry heart. The designer duo drew inspiration from the work of art ‘Brought to Heaven’ by 19th century painter William-Adolphe Bougueran and cooked up a suitably macabre collection drawn between utopia and death. These were gowns for dreamers: all angel wings, skeletal suggestions, puffs of feather light tulle, laser-cut black leather, gilding and heavenly embroidery. Despite being THE go-to house for all things red carpet/society gala, Chapman and Craig sent some more ‘wearable’, shorter dresses down the runway so that we can all finally hope for a piece of Marchesa. 180

Mary Katrantzou Mary Katrantzou continues to stun the fashion world with her jaw-dropping feats of architectural and graphic design. Her AW12 collection offered a change of silhouette from the peplum and hourglass form she served up in her SS12 collection and her celebrated prints assumed an ever more tongue-in-cheek charm whilst wowing by their optic trickery and stunningly bright colours. Katrantzou picked a mundane, everyday object to associate with seven different colours. We saw a kaleidoscope of bright yellow 2HB pencils with real rubber eraser ends (thanks to the Parisian embroidery atelier Lesage), a red velvet typewriter replete with a breastplate of keys, juicy green box hedges, teacups, clocks, blue bathtubs bubbling with pearls, spoons, forks and telephones‌Not only did Katrantzou leave the audience scratching at their heads as they tried to unpick the mesmerizing repeat prints, but her hyper-real patterns helped carve the sleekest of female silhouettes, sculpting shoulders, waists and hips with architectural precision. This was costume, couture and everyday fun all mixed together in one exquisitely designed package. No wonder Katrantzou is hailed as one of London’s leading designers. 192

Matthew Williamson Matthew Williamson’s collection this season was a sexier, more jazzed up version of the luxe boho look that has come to define the designer. Embellishments were in the form of skinsuggestive sequins, thigh feathering and plush furs in seventies, art deco colour blocks. A base of fiery red and saffron whipped up dress hems in flame-like licks into irridescent blue and cream plumes of printed birds of paradise. Bright and bold were the order of the day whether in the form of gold trousers, glittering brocade, a turquoise suit, an orange leather pencil skirt, or a bright red polo neck glaring from beneath a tulle tee. This was an exuberant, exotic, modern and eclectic collection and added a welcome kick of luxe Bohemian Rhapsody to autumn/winter. 208

Peter Pilotto Christopher De Vos and Peter Pilotto took the fashion press by storm with their SS12 show and this season they’ve stretched their now signature multicoloured graphic palette that little bit further, delving deeper into the world of creative insinuation by sourcing inspiration from the multitude of brightly coloured lights on Japanese light trucks. Their AW12 show was a lesson in the art of suggestive colour working: their fluoro fur and neon micro zebra stripes whisked the mind off to a dark night amongst the everchanging bright lights of Asia, whilst their 3D shapes and streamlined cuts helped enhance the kaleidoscopic graphics to create what can only be described as an ‘Avatar’ visual effect. You couldn’t help but feel that this dynamic designer duo were broaching new ground with their cinema graphicworthy designs – sensual, streamlined, suggestive and constructed in a way that made you want to reach out and touch. The addition of drawstring, laminated, wool puffa coats (in collaboration with Schneiders) added a comforting sense of urban wearability to a collection that was otherwise worthy of an art gallery. 222

Prabal Gurung Prabal Garung’s collection for autumn/winter was bold and daring with a hint of fairytale – like a creative collision between James Cameron and Ricardo Tisci. Garung’s colour scheme paved the way for his journey, leading from inky black through myriad blues and finishing in bleached gold with the models’ hair in similar formation. This wasn’t simple colour graduation, it was an organic transition from dark to light with shimmering calibrations: black turned inky and transformed into cobalt; cobalt gleamed iridescent and blossomed into white; white liquesced into smouldering gold and back into bright white again like magnesium burning in a flame. Texture added another layer to this sensory journey with downy furs teamed with sheeny satin, velvety cashmere against shining silks and leather. Appliqué, beading and tulle, ruffles, feathers, crystals and oversize jewels. Embellishment met no boundary. The female form, meanwhile, was carved into womanly curves: capelets and skater skirts emphasized the waist, slim-line dresses cut away in skin-revealing shapes, narrowing at the waist and stretching out over the décolleté. We particularly liked Garung’s sleek dresses that shimmied down to the hips and flicked out into tiny A-lines over sleek, flared trousers. 232

Rag & Bone Londoners David Neville and Marcus Wainwright delivered a busy collection this season, uniting Imperial England with its various colonies. Old World was mixed with New World in both texture and design. British cuts were given an exotic twist – blazers paired with ethnic printed woolens, overcoats gleaming in copper coloured silk, ragged fur gilets worn over tailored outerwear, heritage school blazers and sheer printed pyjama pants. Layer upon layer of clashing print and texture was set off with prim epaulettes, neatly fastened leather belts and second-skin leather gloves. There were no restrictions as to what could or could not be mixed together – we saw blended ikat, crepe wool, cashmere, brocade, bold stripes, eyelet lace, paisley swirls and burnished silks. Asymmetric cuts added to the melee of print, colour and texture – we particulary like the red, grey and dusty earthern striped wrap-around cape fastened neatly at the waist. A nomadic army that knows no boundaries. 250

Richard Nicoll Nicoll’s collection for autumn/winter was showcased in a space he named ‘The Factory’ at the Institute of Contemporary Art on Pall Mall and was labeled ‘Modern Times’ as a tongue-incheek reference to Charlie Chaplin. Nicoll did away with the usual capricious and excessive imaginary inventions of design and instead stripped bare the very notion of concept to deliver a collection that was plainly functional for the everyday woman. These were clothes for work and apparently required no deliberating, thanks to their minimalist, midi-length seeming simplicity of design. However, look a little closer and you notice that the block-coloured ‘worker’ uniforms of boilersuits, smocks, loose-hanging trousers and simple shifts are designed with artful and architectural pleating and made from luxurious materials including buttery leather and silky-soft cashmere. Nicoll also teamed up with Vodafone to create a handbag that charges your phone, reinforcing the feeling that his collection was somewhat like the Apple of the fashion world: simplicity was key, but style, structure and skillful functionality were at the forefront, catering for the modern day woman and her basic demands. 264

Valentino Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli are making women the world over swoon with desire over every piece of their collections for Valentino. This designer duo has perfected the art of creating a luxurious and empowering preciosity – and delivers time and again all the ingredients that make up the ultimate alpha female. These are clothes to desire and be desired in and the autumn/winter collection was made all the more alluring thanks to a touch of the exotic. Sequins sparkled from sheer lace, gold flecks shimmered on silks, and neatly fastened leather(all precision tailoring and macramÊ stitching) gleamed with an enchanting luxuriance. Red jumpsuits, long leather shorts, studded python handbags, ponyskin jackets, heavily embroidered tulle and red leather paneled dresses oozed a modern sexuality, which helped set off the more demure bellsleeves and high-collared, lace and silk pieces to perfection. This collection was delicate yet racy, classic yet with a touch of orient, and womanly whilst at the same time capturing a sense of fleeting, and precious, girlish adolescence. 272

Vera Wang Vera Wang’s AW12 collection was demure, ethereal and oozed sheer luxury. The palette evolved sensually from a warm nude base of camel and taupe bursting into bright flame orange and cindering to charcoal grey and coal black before finishing on a cool shimmering ocean blue. Wang’s designs had a daring and edgy city-sleek appearance, all the while managing to remain firmly rooted in the Feminine. Sleeveless shearling was layered over delicate woolens and sheer chiffon. Despite the long-sleeves, high necklines and trim tailoring, Wang’s long leather slouchy thigh-high boots teemed with sheer silk chiffon dresses, jet black furs fastened nonchalantly over sheer blouses and skin-suggestive, body-skimming silks screamed sexual sensuality. Wang served up an evolving collection, not only through colour, but with cut and texture – skins, furs and silks slipped in and out of the visual frame, each time drawing the eye in towards a newly exposed part of the female form and then zooming out onto a subtle graphic print or embellishment. This collection was visually enticing and delicately carnal with a touch of graceful femininity – all the ingredients you would hope for from Vera Wang. 282

Come Undone For a laid-back, ultra-feminine look this season, take inspiration from the loose tumbling tresses created by the likes of hairstylist Luigi Murenui for Gucci or Sam McKnight at Balmain. Lots of volume spray or mousse at the roots, such as Sachajuan Ocean Mist or Aveda’s Pure Abundance Style-Prep, plus a centre-parting, is key. Unite’s Volumizing shampoo creates excellent bounce. Use a detangler after shampooing or as a finishing spray to ensure your waves stay manageable and shiny. We recommend L’Oreal Mythic Oil Milk – a rich milky mist that combines Royal Jelly and Passiflora oil. For evening elegance, clasp in a half-pony with a crystal-studded clip.

JIL SANDER – THE COUTURE PONYTAIL

STELLA MCCARTNEY – THE CHIGNON

VALENTINO - THE TWIST

Replicate hair maestro and Redken creative consultant Guido Palau’s sleek fifties style couture pony for a modern sophistication this winter. Add hair extensions to give the pony body, or alternatively, ensure that hair is cut blunt at the ends. Use a sleekening shampoo such as paraben-free and sulfate-free Unite Smoothing Shampoo to tame unruly frizz. Pull hair over the eats for a ‘done’ look and fix with a firm hold hairspray such as Elnett Strong Hold Hairspray.

For McCartney’s AW12 hair Wella global creative director Eugene Souleiman created a groomed and la dylike bun with a youthful twist. To achieve the look, sleek hair into a wellpinned bun and spray to smooth flyaways, but using a comb, gently pull away baby wisps at the front hairline. Use L’Oreal’s Playball Beach fizz to give the hair body whilst at the same time creating a matte finish. For hold at the back of the hair, use a gentle hold hairspray such as Bumble and bumble classic hairspray.

Guido Palau took the romantic braiding from Valentino SS12 and gave it a modern, austere edge. Palau twisted hair from the sides and pinned along the way until reaching the nape of the neck. Hair from the crown must be kept flyaway-free so ensure that hair is deeply conditioned. We recommend using Lenor Greyl’s Masque Quintessence. Based on Cupuacu oil and Manketti oil, this deep conditioning treatment moisturizes the hair fibres and offers even the most damaged locks a new shine and manageability. Use Philip B’s Crème of the Crop finishing cream for a supple hold with conditioning benefits.

CHANEL – THE SHOW JUMPER

DOLCE & GABBANA – THE MADONNA

Scrape hair back and tie tight with a band. Leave a strand of hair loose, wrap it around the band and fasten with hair pins or kirby grips. Sam McKnight who masterminded the equestrian ponies at Chanel applied shine enhancing gel to the hair to add a sleek, aerodynamic appeal. We advise using Unite SHINA Liquid Gloss.

Combs, headbands and barrettes, adorned with gold, white and yellow flowers helped embellish Guido Palau’s centre-parted, lowknotted modesty buns and added preciosity to an otherwise demure look. This was the ultimate in luxury hair styling. Apply Kerastase Spray Volumactive to damp hair to help add body, pull over the ears and pin into a bun at the nape of the neck and smooth through with a dab of argan oil. We recommend Unite Luxury Argan Oil.

CHRISTIAN DIOR – THE POLISHED PARTINGSID Oralndo Pita’s ponies for Dior were neat and sleek without the wet-look we saw backstage at the spring/summer shows. The key to replicate Pita’s look is to use a frizz-eliminator which will add shine but not grease such as Moroccanoil Original Oil Treatment.

The look is a more sensual, softer take on the signature Moss eye with subtle graduations and flickers of metallic shimmer to give a bewitching appeal. THE GRAPHICS

Be inspired by the sporting summer and make a statement with bold, graphic swoosh ticks from inner to outer corner of the eyes, as seen at Lanvin. This look requires colour with staying power to avoid a bruised eye appearance. We recommend using a felt tipped eye liner brush and Stila’s Smudge Pot gel eye liner. Apply a generous slick of Stila’s Stay All Day mascara and keep the rest of your makeup minimal with a matte foundation and slight dab of illuminator above the cheekbones.

Dr. Broumand •What inspired you to work in cosmetic surgery?

I always found the combination of aesthetics and science captivating. I felt it suited to my personality and interests and it is the ideal mix of higher science, medicine and beauty.

•How are the treatments you offer perfected and updated so that you are always delivering results in keeping with progression in skincare technology?

I integrate science and the latest technologies in all of my treatments to keep us updated and ahead of the curve, which I feel is key to any successful and progressive practice. Perfecting my techniques based on the latest innovations allows me to surpass regular results. As an example, we do breast reduction surgery with minimal scaring or what we call a lollipop incision which heals beautifully and we have perfected it for all sizes of breast reductions.

practice?

After extensive research with new treatments, products and applications, we select a limited patient population to apply these techniques, and if the results are to our liking, we then follow up by bringing these treatments to our office.

•What do you consider, in your history as a plastic surgeon, to be the most effective/lifechanging cosmetic treatment?

Overall, I would say the ability to affect volume with fat or injectables, whether it is in the face, breast or body.

•Will non-invasive surgery ever achieve the same level of results as plastic surgery?

It is possible, but probably not in my lifetime. However, the two can work together synergistically.

the appearance of wrinkles?

I believe they do, but the longevity is limited in comparison to surgical procedures.

“I integrate science and the latest technologies in all of my treatments to keep us updated” •Are the criticisms that liposuction is just a temporary solution just a myth?

Yes and no. It depends on the volume removed and the location being treated. Localized areas of fat deposits respond best to liposuction in contrast to performing overall liposuction for weight loss.

•How does your Coolsculpting treatment work?

Coolsculpting uses controlled cooling to target stubborn fat. The fat cells become crystallized, die then they are naturally eliminated from your body. The majority of people see a noticeable reduction after one treatment.

•How do you stay on

top of your research? Do you have a team of researchers who ensure that you are up-to-date with the latest science?

In my office we have a researcher and analyst who are dedicated to the search of medical technology and innovations. I also attend different conferences like Baker Gordon, The Cutting Edge, The Round Table discussions regarding face and breast surgery, as well as teaching conferences at Mount Sinai Medical Center where I am an Associate Professor.

“Anticipated treatments are topical Botox, injections for reducing cellulite and fat grafting as an alternative for breast implants.”

•Where do you stand on plastic surgery ethics? How far are you willing to treat a patient and do you have age limits?

It is paramount to incorporate surgical ethics in my practice. I do not want to go outside the realm of reasonable. I believe we all have biological and genetic limits that should be taken into consideration.

•In your lifetime, how far do you think plastic surgery can progress in terms of surgical procedure and cell regeneration?

I think right now we are at the cutting edge of the science and we will have significant and meaningful breakthroughs within the next several decades. Anticipated treatments are topical Botox, injections for reducing cellulite and fat grafting as an alternative for breast implants. EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012

•Ingredients to avoid when investing in •When did you first skincare products? become interested

Parabens. Parabens are preservatives used in a lot of personal care products to extend their shelf life. They’ve been controversial because they can stimulate estrogen, so people are concerned with the risk of breast cancer and stimulating puberty in children. People with sensitive skin should also avoid them because they can cause irritation.

•Personal skincare philosophy? Keep it simple

with three steps: 1. Cleanse 2. Treat 3. Protect. First, cleanse with a product for your skin type. Choose a creamy cleanser for dry skin, a gel cleanser for oily/acneprone skin types and a gentle foaming cleanser for combination skin. In the morning, treat skin with an anti-oxidant serum with Vitamin C or DNA repair and then moisturize with an SPF to protect. At night, cleanse and then follow with a retinol or

my patients than any other form of exfoliation. It’s perfect for normal and even sensitive skin types since the oscillating and vibrating brush head gently lifts debris out of pores and removes dead skin without irritation. When used on a regular basis, it leaves the skin radiant but not stripped.

Vitamin C/E/Ferrulic Acid Serum. It’s worth it to spend money on products that work and can multi-task, such as SkinCeuticals CE Ferrulic which is a potent anti-oxidant serum that protects the skin and improves pigmentation.

•Can’t live without…?

Colorscience Powder sunscreen. One of my favorite suggestions for busy women to look great and stay protected all day is to use a powder sunscreen over their makeup in the morning, and this is the best one I’ve found. The powder locks the makeup in place, cuts down on facial oil on a humid day and provides excellent sun protection. It can be applied several times a day to maintain protection and never messes up makeup.

My favorites are Hydrating B5 Gel from SkinCeuticals or Hyalogy Essence Serum. After the flight it’s good to cleanse the skin with a creamy cleanser with a washcloth to gently exfoliate debris then apply another application of the moisturizer.

Interview With

Michelle Doherty Alpha-H

•What is the core value behind Alpha-H and how you ensure the brand delivers on this?

Alpha-H is committed to real results of replenishment and rejuvenation whatever your skin type or age. Our brand was born out of a very personal journey to find a life-changing skincare solution. The result is in your hands: a highly active professional skin treatment of concentrated and balanced performance ingredients.

“If you have not seen a change in your skin after four days of using your skincare then it is not working for you.” •What are the key ingredients you look for in a skincare product?

Well it all depends on what you’re trying to achieve by using the said product however my top key 364

EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012

ingredients would be: A broad spectrum SPF 50+ for ultimate protection against the damaging sunrays. Alpha Hydroxy Acids, especially Glycolic Acid to maintain a youthful cell renewal process. Antioxidants such as vitamin C, E and Grape Seed Oil protect our skin cells from harsh external aggravators. Hyaluronic Acid is vital to maintain the integrity of our skin’s youthfulness and structural network. Peptides work deep in the skin to repair and rebuild our collagen and elastin network.

•What are the ingredients to avoid when investing in skincare products?

Sodium Lauryl and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (commonly referred to as SLS) are artificial foaming agents that are included in liquid soaps, toothpastes, shampoos, bubble baths, body washes, liquid dishwashing soap, laundry soap and more. They are one of the most commonly used harmful chemicals in mainstream body and skin care products. These chemicals are top on the list of ingredients which I absolutely refuse to allow in the Alpha-H range as they are known irritants.

•What’s your personal

skincare philosophy?

My skincare philosophy is constantly challenging your skin with active ingredients whilst giving your complexion the purest and most effective essential ingredients to rebuild and nourish the skin. If you have not seen a change in your skin after four days of using your skincare then it is not working for you. Alpha-H has the ability to stimulate the skin each night, therefore your skin will never get used to a product like Liquid Gold. I have always believed that in order for your skin to function at its best everyday it needs to constantly be challenged, stimulated and renewed. We practice this theory at Alpha-H by working with active ingredients that take the skin out of its comfort zone.

•What’s your cheap (skincare) thrill?

Hand cream! A woman’s hands are often the first thing to giveaway her age so it’s important to keep the hands looking soft and youthful. AlphaH’s Age Delay Hand and Cuticle Care Cream utilises 10% Glycolic Extract and Soy Peptides to improve skin elasticity and exfoliate dead skin cells.

•(Skincare) splurge? Peels and Microdermabrasion. I indulge in these treatments

to help minimize scarring and uneven skin tone - the result of years of performing “bathroom surgery” on my cystic acne.

•What can’t you live without…?

As a woman in her 40s, who travels constantly and as a result often switches time zones regularly, I rely upon the firming and refining qualities of Alpha-H Liquid Gold, which really is like a facial in a bottle! In a single sweep it removes excess oil and debris and leaves skin soft and silky. I also love it because it makes any makeup applied afterwards look more natural as it sits smoothly on the matrix of the skin.

It wasn’t until I discovered the importance of skincare with active ingredients that doesn’t strip the skin that I began to find skin success. I want to share my experiences with others as I believe all women and men deserve to have healthy, clear skin.

you determine the best course of action for taking care of your skin. I spent years doing damage to my skin by stripping away the protective oils which actually made my skin and acne worse! We are often our own worse critics and end up treating our skin too harshly.

•Where you see the Alpha-H line heading in 5 years time?

•Favourite facial spa treatment?

In five years time I see the Alpha-H line including more body products based on active ingredients as well as additional spa and lifestyle goods. We also have our sights set on launching the brand into the rest of Europe and Asia so make sure you watch this space!

•What’s your favourite travel destination and •Biggest beauty why? myth…? Honestly, I spend so much time travelling abroad for work that my favourite destination is home! Alpha-H is a family run business and I miss my husband and three girls terribly while away travelling.

•Skincare inspiration (person) and why? The everyday woman. I battled with acne for over 15 years, feeling embarrassed to be seen without a face full of makeup!

That you need to spend hundreds of pounds on a 4ml miracle potion to see impressive results. At Alpha-H we work extremely hard with our formulators to ensure we are using the highest percentages of the most active ingredients to help our customers see fast and tangible results to their skin. We do this and retain affordable retail prices as we believe all men and women deserve to have access to great skin.

•Favourite facialist/beauty therapist?

Any of the girls at Fern Skin Clinic.

•Most important beauty advice is…? Ask a therapist to help

Microdermabrasion is a personal favourite of mine and is now a very affordable and readily available treatment that many different skin types would benefit from having a course of treatments. Results include: •More even skin tone •Improved skin texture

•Minimized fine lines and wrinkles •Minimised scars and age spots •Less visible pores

•How to care for skin during flights?

Hydration is key! Once on the plane and comfortable, wash your face with a nourishing cleanser like the Age Delay Cleansing Oil. Then I would suggest popping it back on as a moisturizing treatment balm to prevent the skin from dehydrating. It is also essential to use a facial spritz when on long flights, not only do they refresh the complexion but they are often infused with essential oils like lavender which promote calmness and well being – perfect for travelling!

“Alpha-H has the ability to stimulate the skin each night, therefore your skin will never get used to a product like Liquid Gold.”

•The key to ageing well is…?

I’m sure it will come as no surprise, that the best anti-ageing tool available is sun protection. Everyone needs to be using an SPF based product on a daily basis, I cannot stress this enough! Better yet, the key to fighting the ageing process is to stay out of the sun. However this is not always possible so SPF is essential in protecting the skin against the harmful UV rays that penetrate the skin, breakdown collagen and promote the over stimulation of melanocytes.

Interview With

Sarah Kugelman Skyn ICELAND •How long did it take you to get from lightbulb moment to Skyn products on the shelf ? It was about a year and a half.

•How did you come about sourcing the key ingredients for the products?

It was a lucky accident. I travelled to Iceland as part of my lifelong quest to find and explore healthy, “green” places and fell in love with the country, the culture and the pure, unspoiled nature.

I was amazed at how beautiful everyone’s skin was and started thinking ‘what are they using that makes their skin look so flawless’ and realized it was the incredible, natural, mineral-rich glacial waters that Icelanders bathe in every day. Now we incorporate those waters into each and every one of our products. Now that I’ve travelled there quite extensively and spent a great deal of time experiencing the wonders of Icelandic nature -- I learned that there is a short growing season in Iceland (because it is dark for half the year). That combined with mineral rich, volcanic soil, produces some of the world’s most potent botanicals and herbs. Not to mention the amazing algae’s and kelps from the arctic waters. I incorporate many of those natural ingredients into skyn ICELAND’s products and I am always searching for new ones!

•What is your 368

EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012

desert island beauty product?

I would have to say my Pure Cloud Cream (skyn ICELAND). I have dry skin and it’s the only moisturizer that really nurtures and hydrates my skin without irritating it or making me break out. And, it smells divine! (non-skyn ICELAND product would have to be my YSL black mascara!! I’m a natural blond so my eye lashes are white and I look freaky without mascara!)

•What is your beauty mantra? Beauty starts on the inside.

•Where do you envisage skyn going?

I dream big so I envisage skyn as a global brand that expands beyond face care. The whole world is so stressed out and it just keeps getting worse....we’re all juggling so much and on total technology overload. So, I think we, as a people, are really going to need solutions to stress and stressed skin. That includes body, home, ingestibles, music, clothes, devices etc...I can see our brand reaching into many categories and really bringing healthy solutions to people all over the world. That would be really gratifying and rewarding for me.

•Do you plan to

create a suncare range to factor in SPF protectors ?

Yes definitely. We did have an SPF 18 in the line but I am relaunching that product with a higher level of SPF. I have very fair skin and am a huge believer in sunscreen. But I also don’t love the products that are out there. I think they are filled with nasty chemicals and don’t really treat skin that well. I am looking to do something with a healthy filter that also really nurtures skin. Stay tuned!

•Who do you admire the most?

That is such a hard question to answer. There are so many people I admire and for so many different reasons. I have to say the people I admire most are those that are just completely selfless and give their life to/for others and moreover, are able to galvanize the world and make it a better place...these are the people we don’t hear about. That are not on the cover of magazines, but quietly working magic all over the world. Some examples: A recent CNN story on Dr Benjamin LaBrot: Dr. Benjamin LaBrot started Floating Doctors, a non-profit that travels by sea to provide free health care for people in remote coastal areas. In the last two years, LaBrot and his volunteer team have treated nearly 13,000 patients in Haiti, Honduras and Panama. And a 60 Minutes story last month: more than 20 years ago Dr. Farmer and a few other great minds created a charity called “Partners In Health.” In the years since, they revolutionized the delivery of healthcare worldwide, saving millions of lives in places where no one thought there was any reason for hope. 370

season and change at different ages. I also think that people have combinations of skin types, like I’m dry but I break out and I am also concerned about aging. That’s why I developed skyn ICELAND to be focused more on ‘symptoms of stressed skin’ than skin type.

•What is your antiaging advice?

Stay out of the sun! And, don’t smoke. Then it’s all about good skincare, good health and good genes!

•Are you averse to the technologically advanced approach to skincare, including laser treatments and non-invasive cosmetics?

Not at all, I always tell my husband that I’m NOT going to grow old gracefully. Why not use the options available to look good and feel good. As long as it’s not detrimental to your health and you keep it in perspective (and don’t go too far!)

•What is your favourite holiday destination?

Interview With

Debbie Thomas Leading Skincare Specialist

•What are the key ingredients one should look for in an effective anti-ageing skincare product?

The most proven anti-ageing ingredient is Retin-A but with some irritation common and increased sun sensitivity not everyone is a fan, so now we have newer ingredients like anti-oxidants, peptides and growth factors, all of which are now scientifically proven to strengthen the skin. The quantity and quality of the ingredients is as important as the ingredient itself. For instance, Vitamin C needs to be in the form of L-ascorbic acid and in quantities of over 10% to be effective.

skin than neutralising free-radical damage.

•What is the best way to treat hyperpigmentation?

For me salon treatments such as laser or peels are always more effective at treating pigmentation irregularities than home care products, but to maintain the results and general prevention, home care products like sun damage reversing anti-oxidants and excellent high quality SPF’s are a must. For example, SkinCeuticals have recently brought out a new sunscreen called Brightening UV Defense SPF 30, which as well as providing UV protection, works on correcting and preventing signs of pigmentation. All hyperpigmentation is either solely created by or actively worsened by the sun so safe sun is a must.

•Which SkinCeuticals product would you recommend for overall •Can skin damage skin maintenance? really be corrected? I personally love SkinCeuticals

The skin always has the ability to Retexturing Activator as it regenerate but this regenerating hydrates, nourishes and resurfaces dramatically reduces with age the skin in one and can be used which leads to the signs of AM and PM, so a really great ageing. serum for it to work effectively?

As mentioned earlier, the quantity and quality of ingredients is as important as the ingredients themselves. The correct ingredients need to be used in high enough quantities in the right formulation for it to be absorbed by the skin and used by the cell’s to strengthen them.

•Can the effects of ‘salon treatments’ be achieved at home? How do you see home skincare products advancing technologically Will we ever be able to achieve the same results at home as one gets from a beauty therapist? At home products are the best they have ever been and will continue to improve as science unlocks more amazing ingredients, but at this time you wouldn’t be able to replicate the results of the now very advanced salon treatments available. Homecare can keep the results of your treatments going much longer and so combining both is the key to long-lasting results.

Interview With

Kasia Strzoda Beauty Specialist at the MediSpa, Urban Retreat, Harrods

•How did you arrive where you are today?

After completing a degree in cosmetology, I eased from the theoretical from the practical world, learning new beauty treatments and used my knowledge to prepare new products which I aim to launch in not too distant future using my 6 years of experience in this industry. Having had training from big name companies do have its advantages ranging from Harley Street, Harrods etc. I am lucky to do a job which relates to my passion.

“It is always helpful to have a regular consultation via UV-light to understand what the skin needs as it changes.” •What is your skin philosophy?

As opposed to many, I recommend shuffling products annually. I focus on concentrate products rather than artificial methods which work only on the surface on the skin. I prefer 374

EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012

to exfoliate my skin and then use suitable products to have a faster effect. However, I believe that in order to be able to really determine the effectiveness of any product you have to give it 2-3 months. So check the ingredients and shuffle products annually to have the best of everything.

•What ingredients should one look for in a skincare product? The starting point will be to determine one’s skin type. But also an important fact which many tend to ignore is the

surrounding environment we live in. For example, living in a big, bustling city a woman needs anti-oxidant materials to provide a protection layer to the skin. A rich cream with high concentrations of intensive nurturing oils and ingredients such as ceramics, Vitamin E, A and C are essential. Face oils are another helpful way to keep the skin healthy. Argan oil, in particular, gives amazing anti-aging results when used as a night cream, but in small quantities irrespective of oily/ dry skin.

•What ingredients should be avoided?

Avoid products with mineral oil. Mineral oil and paraffin wax are very cheap base products and are usually added to reduce the cost of manufacturing. When used in high concentrations, they can build an impermeable film on the skin. Therefore, always look for products containing high quality natural plant oils. Chemical preservatives only harm the skin; when used regularly, they have a detrimental effect on the skin.

“I am lucky to do a job which relates to my passion.” •What is your beauty regime?

I am more of a ‘select few products’ type rather than someone who likes to try a range of different products.’ For me, the ingredients are what is most important. I use cleansing milk to remove my make up, followed by face toner with ceramics. I then use a face serum with Vitamins C which provides a brightening effect. I start my day with face foam followed by moisturizer with plant extracts along with SPF 30. My night cream involves Jojoba and Argan oil used separately and eye cream to prevent any dark circles from busy days.

•What is your favourite beauty treatment and why?

A skin-peel. It helps to stimulate collagen and elastin production. It also helps to reduce the size of pores on the skin making the skin clearer especially for a person who smokes. If a good

routine is followed after the treatment, you really notice your skin looking clearer and more radiant. Another favorite of mine is Laser Skin Rejuvenation which helps in preventing/reducing pigmentation. It also helps to remove dark spots caused by sun and aging.

•What should every woman do to maintain youthful skin?

As mentioned before, the first for every woman is to determine their skin type and then choose the most suitable products, guided by ingredients rather than the brand name. It is always helpful to have a regular consultation via UV-light to understand what the skin needs as it changes. Always follow a routine and give any new product at least 2 months to see its real effect. In addition, you can use diet supplements like fish oil to provide necessary skin hydration. Use SPF regularly, irrespective of the sun. Drink decent quantities of water and get a good night’s sleep.

EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012

Interview With

Dr Sebagh •What is the ultimate skin detox?

My belief is to keep to a simple routine – cleanse twice a day with a suitable, gentle cleanser and exfoliate twice a week with a deep exfoliating mask as well as applying a purifying mask once a week

•Is exercise or diet more important for getting rid of toxins from the skin? A sensible, well balanced diet that is rich in Omega 3 & 6 as well a drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, will be far more beneficial to the skin, body and complexion than any exercise.

•Which foods should we be actively incorporating in our diets and which should we be avoiding?

As I mentioned above, a well-balanced diet, rich in protein, good fats, Omega 3 & 6, dark fruits and berries and plenty of fresh green vegetable are all essential, avoid fats, especially polyunsaturated fats and limit your carbohydrate consumption, ideally to

complex carbohydrates but only in the mornings.

•What is your beauty mantra? Its simple, “Beauty is Ageless”

•How effective is homeopathy for creating healthy skin? Can true results only be achieved through more rigorous skin treatments and chemical products? Homeopathy has its benefits but I know that for truly effective anti-ageing skincare the products and treatments must contain active and biotech ingredients that provide a benefit not available through purely homeopathic skin care.

•What is your vital carryon when flying? I travel

extensively with my work and never board a flight without a bottle of my Rose de Vie Serum Delicat, an oil-based serum that contains organic rose hip oil and a variety of biotech ingredients – it is both deeply moisturising and soothing – perfect for long and short-haul flights.

•What is the best way to treat raised white age spots which lie just under the surface of the skin?

Visit an expert, do not try and treat them yourself. A dermatologist, qualified facialist or cosmetic doctor will be able to examine your skin, treat it and prescribe the necessary home skin care regime.

•For people who have already exposed their skin to years of sun, what do you recommend as the best way to reverse the effects?

The only truly effective way to treat sun damaged skin is with laser therapies, performed by a qualified and experienced doctor but remember, any repair work that is done will be undone as soon as the skin is exposed to the sun so it is essential to provide adequate protection at all times – both topical and physical. EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012

377

•Is Retinol the key ingredient to skin rejuvenation?

Retinol can be used as part of a skin rejuvenation programme; though to date I have chosen not to incorporate it into my own Advanced Anti-ageing skin care range. I have utilised alternative, gentler ingredients.

“A sensible, well balanced diet that is rich in Omega 3 & 6 as well a drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, will be far more beneficial to the skin, body and complexion than any exercise.” •Sunscreen aside, what is the most effective preventative for the skin to keep signs of aging at bay?

Truthfully, in addition to sunscreen and physical protection – an effective skin care regime from an early age will pay a key part in keeping the signs of ageing at bay, as well as regular visits to your cosmetic doctor for advanced anti-ageing skin treatments

•How often do you recommend that 378

EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012

your clients have your Meso Glow injections? How long do the effects of each injection last for?

Initially, the best results will be achieved after a course of 2 – 3 fortnightly treatments and then every 6 months or so after that will help to maintain the results and a healthy glowing complexion.

•How is the Meso Glow injection different from taking the same cocktail of vitamins orally?

Taking any supplement orally will be of benefit over time but the advantage of Meso Glow is that the cocktail is painlessly injected directly into the dermis, achieving a result in just a couple of days.

•It seems that time is ever more of the essence – is comedown and treatment time now a vital part of your research for new treatments? Are you seeing an increasing number of ‘lunchbreak patients’?

The anti-ageing and skin maintenance treatments available at my clinics in London and Paris are remarkably one-invasive,

with the majority requiring no down-time at all. Even some of the laser treatments, such as Fraxel and ReFirm, have only a 48-72 hours downtime, before the patient is able to attend social events and enjoy the benefits of the treatment. Botox and fillers have no down time at all and nor does Meso Glow.

•Where and how is your research carried out?

I have my own research laboratory and team of scientists who work closely with me at my manufacturing facility in South West France.

•How often are you required to travel for work?

I travel constantly – between Paris and London each week and to the US, the Far East, Russia and other Middle Eastern and European nations throughout the year.

•Is plastic surgery a thing of the past? Will non-invasive treatments eventually be more effective?

I do believe that cosmetic surgery will become a thing

of the past for most patients – the advances that I and other cosmetic doctors have made with anti-ageing treatments has been very exciting. There will always be some cases that will require surgery but they are already becoming fewer and fewer. The patient, who has taken good care of her skin and followed a skin maintenance programme from an early age, should be able to avoid the need for facial surgery.

•Who do you most admire?

My children and my colleagues.

•Favourite destination...?

Anywhere warm and comfortable – the choices are endless

•Favourite artist…?

I have too many artists I enjoy and admire to name one

“The only truly effective way to treat sun damaged skin is with laser therapies, performed by a qualified and experienced doctor but remember, any repair work that is done will be undone as soon as the skin is exposed to the sun.”

•Currently reading…? Ah, how I wish I had the time to read – that is a luxury I have not yet acquired.

•Life is for…?

What else? Living’

•Love is…?

Personal and fulfilling.

•If you do one thing this autumn… Slow down but maybe it will be autumn 2020 that I begin to do so!

“Behind big blue gates and set amidst gardens of olive and cypress trees, roses and lavender is the beautiful boutique hotel La Maison du Paradou - a private and exclusive oasis of calm.”

What To Do:

Be sure to visit the neighbouring towns of Maussane and Paradou as well as the jaw-droppingly beautiful Les-Baux-deProvence which is 10 minutes away by car through the Alpilles. There are plenty of activities to indulge in, from tennis and cycling to hiking and horse riding. You can even sign up for cookery classes with one of St.Remy’s resident acclaimed chefs. Wander through the beautiful old town of St.Remy and browse chic art galleries and private boutiques. There are often classical and jazz concerts held in the town in the evenings and it is definitely worth wandering around the town after dinner to indulge in a homemade ice cream from one of the little gelaterias. Visit Arles on a Saturday to experience their vibrant market.

“Hop on the Eurostar, stop over in Paris for lunch and then straight on down to Avignon. St. Remy is less than an hour’s drive from Avignon.” EL ESTILO*/AUTUMN WINTER 2012
