A

new season, a new Trend Report, and this time it’s a mix of big, bold, bright and beautiful things. Whatever your mood, there’s a designer to cater for it. Burberry Prorsum for Quality Street metallics, Chanel for whimsical armadillo shapes, Valentino for a sensual monastic dichotomy, Chloe for frills and comfort, Miu Miu for otherworldly opulence, Prada for Eastern promises…the list goes on. There’s crops and capes, pearls and fur, frills and lace, sixties eclectic, flowers galore and all in a kaleidoscope of colour. Bags are bright, shoes are strappy and both come in pretty, sparkly, daring, exotic and sometimes downright odd varieties. Backstage hair and makeup, on the other hand, were refreshingly muted. Hair had a shiny, youthful colour and quality and was swept up in a range of different ways, all done with a look of casual nonchalance. We partner with the fabulous Hari’s hair salon to bring you colour and styling tips to replicate the looks. Meanwhile, in our backstage beauty edit, we’ve picked the brains of one of the finest makeup artists and ambassadors in the country, Jane Richardson, who shows us how to recreate the hottest catwalk looks using NARS products and years of expertise. As we go to publication, the country has become divided by the death of Margaret Thatcher. One thing that is undeniable is that she was a fantastic icon for women in the workplace and an often-overlooked figurehead for feminism. I am delighted, therefore, to open the doors on 6 international businesses, each headed up by women, in our Beauty Insider section. Whilst the climate is still undecided as to whether it is winter or spring, we bring you a more assured dose of sunshine in our Caribbean Escape travel special, in which we bring you the best hotels for different types of sun getaways, including a glamorous stop-off in Miami. 2

Foundation will never sit perfectly on the skin, nor allow the skin to glow, if your face isn’t primed and prepped properly before application. These are the go-to products:

“Lightweight, energizing and proven to increase cell respiration and ATP energy”

Exfoliator – Estelle & Thild Micro Scrub Lily skin renewal This organic, gentle skin scrub is packed with vitamins, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids. Makeup artist to the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Rosamund Pike, Emma Day, advises doubling-up with the Estelle & Thild Lily Detox Mask for the ultimate in deep cleansing. Serum – Elemis Visible Brilliance Instant Radiance Serum or OSKIA Get Up & Glow Elemis Visible Brilliance Instant Radiance Serum is packed with proteins, vitamins, copper, zinc 85

and magnesium, feels light and fresh and leaves the skin perfectly prepped for priming. OSKIA’s Get Up & Glow is a great alternative. Lightweight, energizing and proven to increase cell respiration and ATP energy, it is also packed with nutrients and polypeptides (clinicallyproven youth-boosters). Skin is left smooth and radiant. Base/Primer – This Works Perfect Look Skin Miracle A tinted moisturizing lotion, loaded with Vitamin C and E and the super-hydrator hyaluronic acid. It goes on smoothly and provides barelythere prime coverage, allowing you to forego moisturizer and foundation, depending on the level of coverage needed. A wonder product.

BODY SCRUB DOWN Never underestimate the importance of skin exfoliation when trying to enhance your skin tone and improve elasticity. An effective exfoliator will not only remove the top layer of dead cells to reveal a more radiant skin below, but will unblock pores, help banish ingrown hairs and improve circulation. Moisturizers will also be absorbed more easily by skin that has lost the flaky barriers and clogging dirt. Choosing a decent body scrub is essential – and don’t hold back on the quantity used, a decent exfoliation should use enough Chloe SS13 product to work thoroughly into all areas of the body (in circular motions)– especially those which will soon be on display eg. legs, underarms, arms and décolleté. Look for products that don’t just slough away the skin, but that contain the best ingredients to improve lymphatic drainage, banish cellulite and boost cell renewal. This is our pick of the best: AROMATHERAPY ASSOCIATES Enrich Body Scrub This scrub has the scent of a good spa body treatment. It provides a rich and vigorous clean and is packed with natural ingredients such as sea salt, coffee (caffeine has been proven to keep cellulite at bay), frankincense (an antiinflammatory with great healing properties) and grapefruit (full of anti-oxidants to fight free radicals). 86

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

* Tip: for extra polishing qualities, apply body scrubs to dry, instead of damp, skin *

Beauty

ELEMENTAL HERBOLOGY Beach Prep Body Exfoliator Most body scrubs advise against using on damaged skin, but Elemental Herbology’s Beach Prep is soothing even on sunburnt and inflamed skin. Its exfoliating properties are soft but effective. The list of super-ingredients is endless- macademia, one of the richest known scources of Omega 7, helps replenish the skin’s naturally occurring lipids to ensure skin stays hydrated, mandarin helps to balance sebum production, preventing clogged pores, and is also an antiseptic. Sea salt and papaya detoxify the skin and help shed the dead skin cells, whilst Kombuchka evens pigmentation and softens the dermis, evening out lines and rough skin. ELEMIS Lime and Ginger Salt Glow A thick, luxurious scrub containing sea salt to exfoliate and remineralise the skin, ginger to help stimulate the skin, improve metabolism and rid the body of toxins, lime peel to purify, kukui oil for its nourishing essential fatty acids, camellia oil to prevent keloids and diminish scar tissue, and jojoba oil to hydrate the skin. Free from nasties. Avoid using on freshly shaven skin. SHIFFA Basil and Mint Body Scrub The scent alone of this body scrub is testament to its fresh ingredients. Whilst basil and mint work as a natural decongestive, grapefruit and orange detoxify the skin, rich sea salts taken from the Dead Sea clear the skin of dead cells, hazel stimulates cell renewal and sweet almond oil nourishes and softens the new skin below. Shiffa’s beautiful packaging is a bonus.

HYDRATION & STIMULATION Body moisturizers are stepping up a notch, with cosmetic companies injecting the once overlooked body staple with a long overdue dose of key ingredients that are usually saved for facial skincare. We bring you the best products for locking in moisture, battling uneven skintone and firming up your limbs…

KATE SOMERVILLE Goat Milk As a child, Kate experienced dry skin and eczema and would bathe in real goat milk to help soothe her skin. She decided to create this lotion, incorporating lactose from goat milk (which apparently has the closest PH to our own skin), to treat those with chronically dry skin. It also works perfectly on acne prone or oily skin as it contains witch hazel, a natural antiseptic, to help fight bacteria. Vitamins E & C provide a dose of antioxidants to detoxify the skin, leaving it smoother and healthier. LOVE MYBODY Citrus Coconut Probiotic Body Lotion Probiotic bioactives help stimulate the skin’s natural repair process, beta glucan increases the production of collagen and vitamins A & E help regenerate the skin and protect it from premature ageing. The lotion smells delicious and leaves the skin velvety soft. ELEMIS Pro-collagen body cream This body cream is great for lifting. The key ingredient is Padina Pavonica which is an outstanding collagen-boosting marine extract, scientifically farmed in the seas of Malta and collected at its optimal level of activity. It helps improve the skin’s elasticity and increases the skin’s metabolism and renewal process. Skin feels noticeably firmer and smoother.

OLE HENRIKSEN Body Sleek Hydrating Lotion Apply onto slightly damp skin for best results. This moisturizer is loaded with essential fatty acids and vitamins such as almond oil, avocado oil and vitamins A&D. It’s lightweight, non-greasy, has a subtle scent and is perfect for use on sensitive skin. Due to its gentle, soothing properties, it is also recommended for use on baby’s skin and during pregnancy on breast tissue and the stomach to help provide extra nourishment to the skin and prevent stretch marks. ADONIA Leg Tone Ever wondered why, despite massaging cream ritually into your orange peel skin, the cellulite doesn’t disappear ? According to the masterminds behind this leg toning serum, also dubbed ‘the nine minute butt-lift’, it’s because most creams aren’t targeting the cause. One of the main causes of cellulite is when skin stem cells become weak and dormant. This high-tech body serum is the first to use the regenerative properties of plant stem cells to help breathe life back into these dormant or weakened human skin stem cells. Intense clinical tests carried out in America laboratories found that it reduced cellulite by as much as 47 per cent in nine minutes and around 70 per cent over a six-week period. ORICO Full Cup An all natural breast enhancement oil that has been proven to enhance breasts by 2 – 4 cm after 6 weeks of use, whilst also improving skin quality. It contains powerful active ingredients to help skin tonicity and fill in wrinkles by increasing lipid storage. It also contains an aromatherapy blend of lime and orange essential oils to increase circulation.

Valentino SS13

GET READY TO GLOW!

Make-Up

we look to Valentino SS13 for the flawless, luminous complexions, mastered by Pat McGrath, whose aim was to keep the girls looking how they actually look, but with a healthy dose of R&R. Here’s how to recreate it:

The key is making the skin appear velvet rather than dewy so ensure you sweep over a dusting of Chanel’s Illuminating Poudre Signee de Chanel after you’ve applied your blush, shadow and contouring. For eyes, stick with warm plum, brown and beige and ensure you also sweep a line under the lower lids. Dr. Hauschka’s Dear Eyes palette is perfect. For cheeks, avoid any dramatic contouring or bronzer – instead, sweep a light bronzer (we like Wild About Beauty’s Golden Beach Bronzer) under cheekbones and above the temples and focus on the blush. Blusher should be lilac pinks or peach. A lilac tone will look good on darker skin, whereas peaches will complement a paler complexion. We like Clarins Blush Prodige Illuminating Cheek Colour in 01 Lovely Rose or 03 Miami Pink. To follow McGrath’s lead, switch black mascara for brown (Korres do excellent brown mascaras), or if you’d prefer to use black, Guerlain’s Cil’s d’Enfer Maxi Lash Mascara is the must-have black mascara right now for a false lash effect. For lips, Chanel’s Rouge Allure Le Rouge Intense in 114 Precieuse is perfect for a natural, peachy pout or alternatively, Tom Ford’s Lip Colour Shine in Quiver. 91

Make-Up

“At Chanel, models sported an icier look with slicks of silver and graphite” Chanel SS13

With complexions looking natural and cheeks and lips muted on most of the designer catwalks for SS13, we turn to the eyes to bring a pop of life into your daily, or evening, look. At Chloe makeup artist Diane Kendal forewent mascara and opted for a coppery sweep across the lids to bring the eyes alive. Kendal used MAC’s Smoked Paprika cream eyeshadow, but we also like NARS’s cream eyeshadow in Savage for a coppery shimmer. At Chanel, models sported an icier look with slicks of silver and graphite. Chanel’s Illusion d'Ombre Long-Wear Luminous

Chloe SS13

Eyeshadow allows you to graduate the colour intensity, thanks to its soufflé consistency, so apply extra layers for a deeper colour, or less for a subtle sheen. Peter Phillips extended the shadow up to the brow line, but we advise sticking to just above the outer lids for a natural daytime look. Line with kohl or black liner to dramatize. For something more subtle, go for a pale smokey finish with a copper lining like Diane Kendal’s more natural take on the Chloe look at Alberta Ferretti (main image), again using MAC.

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

Make-Up

EL ESTILO* meets International Lead Stylist and UK Ambassador for NARS Jane Richardson to talk through the new NARSskin line and how to recreate the NARS makeup looks for Spring/Summer.

“NARSskin boasts skincare products created by the Shiseido labs, using microprism technology to reflect light”

BACK TO BASICS Unlike many makeup brands that offer a skincare line to tick a box, NARSskin recognizes the importance of good skincare that compliments the makeup. NARSskin boasts skincare products created by the Shiseido labs, using microprism technology to reflect light, and antioxidants, minerals and vitamins to feed the skin and help it shine through the NARS makeup. Francois Nars states that “the best skin is skin that can 95

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

reflect light” and that his aim with NARSskin is to allow skin to reflect light and to therefore restore luminosity to the skin – something that naturally wanes over time. Having tested the NARSskin products, EL ESTILO* can attest that they truly do achieve this. They are also free from parabens, synthetic perfumes and alcohol so they feel wonderfully fresh on the skin. Jane talks us through the staple products:

Make-Up

Multi-action Hydrating Toner “This toner doesn’t just help hydrate the skin, but also acts as an exfoliator. It activates enzymes in the skin to break down dead skin cells. We use it on the lips too.” Optimal Brightening Concentrate “This serum is packed with Vitamin C to even out skintone. We use this because it gives instant radiance, so it’s perfect to perk up models’ skin at shows when they’re tired and run down. You can also mix it with a tinted moisturizer for a healthy glow, but I just use it on its own. ” Luminous Moisture Cream “This cream has been created using the NARS exclusive microprism technology to restore radiance. It also has lots of antioxidants and is very gentle. There is no SPF, no scent. It provides essential moisture instead of loading the skin and is dermatologically tested. The great thing about it is that you can use it day and night, which you shouldn’t do with other day creams that contain SPFs.” Total Replenishing Eye Cream “Use tiny amounts around the orbital zone. The lymphatic system around the eyes is so delicate that if you use too much product, you risk slowing down the lymphatic drainage, which can lead to puffy eyes. Instead, dot very small amounts at your crows feet and work around. Use any excess on your lips.”

Make-Up

*We don’t generally use primers backstage, but I highly recommend using the Pore-refining Primer to keep your makeup in place throughout the day – especially in summer. *People underestimate the effect that eye cream has on concealing dark circles when used underneath concealer. The eye cream actually changes the colour and appearance of the concealer on the skin, so always remember to dab the Total Replenishing Eye Cream beneath concealer for the best coverage. *A lot of people shy away from powders. Don’t be afraid to use powder to set your makeup. If used properly (dabbed into the skin with a puff ) and if the product is good (we recommend the NARS Light Reflecting Loose Powder) then it will create a great satin finish. *When contouring, always concentrate on your bone structure. If you have a very wide jaw line then you can forego contouring the cheekbones and contour the forehead instead to balance out the face. If you have small cheekbones and a round face then, using the Ita Kabuki Brush, press along the lower part of your cheekbone, starting from where you feel it start to curve under. Press into the apple of the cheekbone (not below it but just on the lower cusp) to emphasize the plumpness. *Invest in good brushes. One of my favourites is the NARS Yachiyo Kabuki Brush. 107

EL ESTILO* GUIDE TO SS13 HAIRCARE

109

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

Haircare

Spring/Summer is all about natural looking hair. That means no bright highlights or dip-died ends. Models’ hair on the catwalks was all glossy natural roots, subtle shimmering highlights and uniform colours. It had that virgin hair-colouring appeal of natural hair that is lightly highlighted for the first time – hair which you can’t tell whether it has been highlighted by the sun or by the bottle. It’s time to go back to your roots…with a helping hand. EL ESTILO* tested whether a gentle transition from burnished blonde to a natural, caramel brown is achievable…

Backstage at Burberry Prorsum SS13

REVIEW The salon: Hari’s, King’s Road Before: I had managed to grow out my roots to a decent couple of inches to give a good indication of my natural hair colour (medium brown). The lengths of my hair were a bright blonde, the result of sunshine on a series of balayaged highlights. The style was mid-length, cropped into a jaggedy mess of a sweeping fringe at the front (note: never succumb to the temptation of snipping at your own hair), and a uniform length around – resulting in very little volume at the roots The colourist: Mel The treatment: 2 tones of lowlights throughout with a spattering of lighter blonde around the hairline The stylist: Andy Backstage at Burberry The cut: The jaggedy feathering was left to grow longer, the fringe was cut Prorsum SS13 into a neat side-sweep and layers were added close to the ends for a subtle lift and bounce. After: The excruciating moment of truth when my hair was being blow-dried revealed not the Morticia Adams gothic darks my mind had been concocting as Melanie applied the lowlights, but instead a shimmering, glossy-looking, natural colour – a mix between my previous highlighted hair and my natural brunette. The darks are split with tiny slivers of highlights and my face is now haloed by subtle highlights around my hairline. The result is staggeringly natural and would suit both those who are looking to tone down their blonded locks, as well as those who are looking to revert to their natural, virgin hair colour - I could go either way from here. The cut, meanwhile, has allowed the hair to bounce and has lifted it at the roots – the perfect style to set off the shimmering new caramel browns. 110

THE COLOURIST – MELANIE HALACOGLU EL ESTILO* says… I showed Mel 3 images of the desired hair colour and she didn’t need to hesitate. She knew exactly how to recreate the colour and the end result was fantastic. She took away the feeling of dread you normally get when changing hair colour and using a particular colourist for the first time

THE STYLIST - ANDY SADIQ EL ESTILO* says… Andy knew immediately what he needed to do to improve my style and the change he made was surprisingly subtle. A rare and refreshing change from stylists who usually seem to have their own agenda regardless of the client’s desired end result

THE SALON – HARI’S KING’S ROAD EL ESTILO* says… I had my hair colour done downstairs where you feel comfortably out of sight and it is nice and relaxing. The cut was done upstairs, where there is a more vibrant atmosphere – perfect for perking you up before leaving the salon with your new style. The staff are very friendly and there is an extensive menu for refreshments and great head massages!

KIT BAG ESSENTIALS FOR S/S13 HARI’S Creative Director CRAIG TAYLOR reveals which haircare products are in his kit this season and provides EL ESTILO with his Hair Report for Spring/Summer ’13…

Base Products Mousse Mousse is a favourite base product. It gives body, volume and hold. With the trend for Spring Summer 13 being effortless and relaxed, the mousses to use should be light in hold and not the sticky mousse we remember from its beginning in the 80’s, where hair needed to be big and fixed. Mousse helps take the edge off freshly washed hair that is slippery and can be hard to work with, so is a perfect prep product. 113

to build lift and help provide volume before using any brush to smooth hair. Bumble & Bumble Styling Lotion A subtle but effective styling spray for building body that will leave hair still feeling natural in a modern effortless way. Salt Water Sprays All salt sprays can be applied to wet or dry hair. Applied on wet hair will help provide body and applied to dry hair will give a chunky tousled texture. Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray As a base for building body, this spray gives that out of the sea, dried in the sun chunky texture. It drys matte and gives a sexy rough finish, can be left to dry naturally without heat and just worked with fingers. TIGI catwalk session series Salt Spray Adds body, texture and volume. It helps control frizz and defines texture. Creme’s Bumble & Bumble Styling Creme Has good hold and the more you add the more hold you get. Whether for curl and movement definition, adding body, lifting roots or slicking back, this product is versatile and effective. Finishing Products Dry Shampoo Achieves a matte dry finish that will give hair body and texture, helping to remove grease from the hair. TIGI Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo The benefits are that it is more invisible than most dry shampoos and is fairly odourless. Batiste Coloured Dry Shampoo 114

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

Comes in Shades of Blonde, Medium Brown and Dark Brown. These dry shampoos provide a pigmented powder that helps prevent the graying effect most dry shampoos give. They can help disguise roots from grown out hair colour and provide the same body and matte finish. Shine Spray Bumble & Bumble Shine Spray Is an ultra light spray that gives a luminous shine that lasts for those wet-look styles for Spring / Summer. PhytoPlage L’Orginale Beach Spray Was the oil used in the early 90’s grunge hair trend. Now it comes in a spray that gives hair high shine and a chunky wet look texture. Not to be confused with a salt spray, this is a sun protection oil that has been around since the mid 1970’s but can help achieve the trend looks for Spring Summer. Styling Crème’s Kiehls Crème with Silk Groom A favourite product with all session hairstylists as it moisturizes and is formulated with silk powders that absorb in to the hair, especially under photo lights, which means that you can reapply to give constant shine, smoothness or texture. Use with caution on finer hair as can be too heavy. Bumble & Bumble Grooming Crème Gives a low shine that helps add texture that separates in a soft natural way. Only add a little as it has a consistency that is wet, though it’s light so suits finer hair. Hair Spray L’Oreal Elnett Supreme Hold This hairspray is fine, dry and gives good hold. Elnett brushes out with little residue, therefore is versatile allows for frequent restyling or freshening up a look. A benchmark product that all product companies try to emulate. CRAIG’S TREND REPORT FOR SS13 DUAL TEXTURE Where: Derek Lam, Rag & Bone, Missoni, Giambattista Valli How: Loose rough tousled mixture of very light bend and straightness to the hair and slicked back at the sides or top; dry ends or wet ends THE NEW STRAIGHT Where: Isabel Marant, Burberry Prorsum How: The new straight hair is not the bolt straight hair we have seen before during the early noughties that was bodiless, flat and lifeless. At Isabel Marant, hair was straight at the ends but had body at the roots and midlengths, giving the hair more lustre, which looked more natural and healthy, without looking overly manipulated by flat irons. This gave straight hair a new real, more modern direction. Burberry Prorsum had straighter hair through the top and mid lengths, still maintaining body, leaving a natural movement to the ends CENTRE PARTINGS Where: Stella McCartney, Isabel Marant, Rochas, Pucci, Jil Sander, Chanel How: Whether the hair was down and straight, tousled, in a low ponytail or in an updo the symmetrical centre parting appeared fresh MODERN GRUNGE Where: Roberto Cavalli, House of Holland, Diane 115

At Marni, the hair was tied back in a low-slung knotted bun that had a loose dishevelled feeling THE PONYTAIL Where: Balmain, Jil Sander, Michael Kors. How: Ponytails featured again for S/S 13. The theme, like the updo’s, was that they were low and napebased in order to give a low-key feeling of having been pulled back by yourself. At Balmain hair was rough and slightly wet look, with hair taken away from the face that gave a fresh feel from the front, with the ponytail ties exposed to give a more real, unpolished finish. Jil Sander’s models had heavily centre-parted hair that was tied in a ponytail, with any shorter hairs being able to fall free. Michael Kors models had a hair bungee cleverly stretched and attached behind the ears to leave a wide ponytail like look SIXTIES Where: Louis Vuitton, Moschino, Marc Jacobs, Chloe. Q&A WITH DR. LAMEES HAMDAN The leading lady behind the NUMBER ONE selling beauty brand in the Middle East, SHIFFA, and a pioneer in the ever-growing puritanical approach to Skincare.

D

r. Lamees started her professional career as a medical doctor, but since falling pregnant with her first child and formulating, at home, a specialised pregnancy oil to prevent her from getting stretch marks, she has moved full-time into the field of Cosmetics, developing her very own brand, Shiffa. Thanks to the effectiveness of her 100% organic pregnancy oil (now her signature product), word spread of Dr. Lamees’ cosmetology prowess. It wasn’t long before the Six Senses resort in Dubai gave her carte blanche to develop a complete line of products specifically for their spa and Shiffa was born.

Dr.L: I had to do a lot of research. My medical background was focused very much on understanding the skin from within the body - at a cellular and molecular level. I had to teach myself about mixing ingredients in such a way that they would have a positive effect when applied externally to the skin. One of the most difficult things to master was stabilising the natural ingredients. Preserving them was also a challenge - you also have to factor in catering for different climates. As a result, each of our batches have an expiration date so that they are used at their most effectiveness.

Dr.L: That was definitely the most exciting point in my career, but also the most challenging. I had approximately 8 months to expand my line of 4 body oils into a complete cosmetic range.

Dr.L: First and foremost, effective results. I don’t want to age and I need a product that works. Secondly, simplicity. The ageing process is complex; Shiffa is a simple solution. We use ingredients that target everything. In most of our products you will find up to 25 active ingredients. The product is deliberately limited- we have one type of cleanser, two moisturisers for example...

EE: How easy was it to source ingredients, manage the manufacturing process and deliver the product to the consumer? 117

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

EE: What is the philosophy behind Shiffa?

Beauty

EE: But how are you able to cater for people with different skin conditions? Acne, wrinkles etc.? Dr.L: What every skin needs is more or less the same. I treat acne skin the same as sensitive skin. Unfortunately we are conditioned by marketing to believe that we require several different products to treat our skin. EE: Can naturals have as effective results as other chemical-based products? Dr.L: Naturals work better. They are better assimilated by the body. Mineral oils just clog your pores. Think of how you nourish your body through healthy food, full of essential fats and vitamins. Our naturals do the same for the skin. Take avocado oil for example. People don’t realise that it is not just moisturising, it contains potassium and magnesium and is scientifically proven to increase elastin formation in the skin. EE: And where do you source your ingredients from? Dr.L: From all around the world. No expense is spared. My reasoning is that the consumer will pay more for a product which really works, so the increased cost in sourcing the finest ingredients is covered in this way. Our frankincense is from Oman, camomile from England, lavender from France, jasmine from Egypt, rose from Iran... EE: There’s now more focus on delivering a puritanical approach to haircare too, with ‘supernaturals’ such as Argan oil creating a buzz in the beauty industry. Parabens and sulphates have long been frowned upon and artificial fragrances are apparently to be avoided, so considering you have a head start in this arena, do you have plans to build out a haircare line? Dr.L: We already have a range of multi-use relaxing and invigorating hair oils. It is an Arab tradition, adopted from the Indians, to use hair oils to maintain shiny, healthy looking hair. Sometimes I apply oil to my hair, leave it on for a while and wash it off. Before my children go to 118

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

““Simplicity is key. I have to juggle so much in life, I want my beauty regime to be simple and effective.” school I often massage oil into their hair, braid it and leave it in. Thick hair takes well to daily oil treatments. It will be a while before we create a shampoo and conditioner. We’ve tried in the past and it’s extremely difficult to get right. EE: Are there any new products in the pipeline? Dr.L: Yes, we’ve just produced an Arabian soap which will be launching in London, and we’ll be launching our first and only perfume in May. We’re also currently formulating a foundation. EE: So you’ll be expanding into makeup? Dr.L: Well, only the essentials. A foundation will never make the skin look good unless you use a decent base for example. I will only focus on key, staple products. EE: And what are your own key, staple products ? Dr.L: Apart from Shiffa, I like to use EltaMD’s oilfree SPF, Elnett hairspray, and I always like to wear lipstick. I used to use Guerlain Kiss Kiss but I’m now using Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine. I’m also really into Greens - I have Pure Synergy at home. EE: What is your personal beauty philosophy? Dr.L: Simplicity is key. I have to juggle so much in life, I want my beauty regime to be simple and effective. I want one product but one that works well, rather than layering ineffective products. It’s like clothes - I used to buy a lot of clothes; now I just buy one or two pieces, but pieces that will last. Also, don’t obsess. Obsessing and getting work done as a result can make you look abnormal. Be happy with what you have.

Q&A WITH LITTLE BU FOUNDER PATRICIA DENTE HAIMES “Little BU’s colourful shades are inspired by little girls’ extraordinary power of playful creativity. We believe that every girl has a Little BU inside of her and that our fun and colourful shades of nail polishes will ignite her imagination and self-expression.”

EE: What inspired you to set up Little BU? Patricia: Little BU was inspired by the sweet girls I met when having my nails done in New York. Week after week, little clients would pick a colour and sit for a manicure next to me. I thought, wouldn’t it be great to have a line made especially for them that’s non-toxic, without all the traditional nail chemicals? EE: What is the age group you are targeting? Patricia: The collection was initially targeted at the girls who liked to paint their nails like mum, but our popularity has grown to include pregnant women who do not like the chemicals in traditional toxic nail polish, and women in service industries who need a short wear for work purposes. EE: How have you developed the polishes to cater for young girls ? Patricia: Little BU nail polishes are non-toxic and odourless and have been created so they can be removed by washing your hands with warm water and soap. It’s a safe and clever way to apply polish and ensure kids can remove it before school! I used my background in colour to formulate a range of fantastic shades and 119

“They can be soaked off with soap so kids can quickly remove the polish before school.” effects like metallics, shimmers, cream and pearls. Each season we introduce four new hues to the collection to provide newness to our clients. EE: How do you see the brand expanding ? Patricia: At the moment we have only been trading for over one year so we we’re still building brand awareness, however, we do have plans to extend into nail art stickers and a peel-off polish this summer. Down the pipeline we’ll create lip balms with shimmers that have a health factor to it. That’s very important element to us. EE: Will we see you collaborating with any kids’ companies? Patricia: Definitely. We have already done special events for Ralph Lauren, Amaia and Juice Couture where the little girls get gorgeous mini manis. This season we’ve also participated in children’s events including the Petite PARADE fashion show in New York and the first Global Kids Fashion Week in London. EE: What is your beauty advice, after 15+ years in the industry, to children and adults? Patricia: Protect your skin! I know it’s been said a numerous times, but covering up from

the sun and wearing an SPF will help preserve your skin for the future. By all means get into an anti-aging routine early but keep your skincare basic. Avoid peels because they will age you more than you know! Drink a lot of water and treat yourself to a basic facial for a nice skin clean. Also, invest in good serums – they penetrate deeper than creams. EE: Which products do you use and trust? Patricia: Estee Lauder and Neutrogena are great skincare brands that I’ve been using for years. I also love Chanel’s Sublimage Cream for colder months. It feels so luxurious and absorbs so well into the skin! I also douse myself in Estee Lauder’s hyaluronic acid-packed Advanced Night Repair day and night to keep my skin hydrated and have a Sarah Chapman facial every few months. EE: What is your favourite holiday destination? Patricia: For a relaxing time in the sun, our family heads to the Maldives. It’s so peaceful and perfect, without the rush of the city! EE: Your favourite book? Patricia: I like a bit of mystery and suspense and Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s, The Shadow of the Wind delivers! EE: Happiness is... Patricia: ...Today. Now. It’s the happiest time of my life. 120

Q&A WITH JAMILA ASKAROVA EL ESTILO* speaks to Jamila Askarova of GAZELLI about her family’s beautiful Skincare brand, their unique ingredient and her beauty advice...

T

he Gazelli story has been unfolding for more than 10 years in Azerbaijan, with renowned chain of spas and fascinating professional and retail products based on the most unique blends of powerful natural ingredients. Many years later, the family owned beauty group headed by Dr. Hamzayeva and her daughter Jamila have combined all their knowledge and expertise to create their first luxury skincare retail brand Gazelli for the European market, with a launch at Urban Retreat, Harrods in London. Gazelli, introduced its first range, Triple Youth™ alongside a selection of facials, based on their most exclusive ingredient, the regenerative White Oil™ that is developed from the world’s only source of a natural oil that has been revered for centuries in Azerbaijan as a miracle cure in medicine. 121

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

Years of meticulous experimentation led to the final breakthrough that allowed Dr Hamzayeva, a leader in the field of genetics and preventative medicine, to perfect Gazelli’s incredibly healing and regenerative White Oil™. This powerful Oil is combined with firming organic compounds and potent anti-oxidants from the highest quality fruit extracts and essential oils to create the pinnacle in effective luxury skincare that will rejuvenate, protect and nourish the skin from within. EE: How has the role of genetics been applied to the Gazelli line? Jamila: A person is born with certain genetic characteristics and predispositions. Some for example are young but their skin has already started to show the signs of ageing. Others have a healthy, youthful skin type that doesn’t

Beauty

change as much as they mature. So with that in mind Gazelli is always determined to find a truly individual approach to each customer. The idea of prescribing the correct skincare by dividing the people into 3 different types of skin and separating them into their age groups is no longer valid. We believe that it is crucial for qualified specialists to analyze your unique skin state, genetic background, lifestyle and eating habits and only after that, propose the routine and products that would suit you specifically. It is also important to monitor progress and adapt the use of certain products based on the changes in your life.

was the first to create a patented method to bring this ingredient from use in medicine into high quality skincare products – so it’s completely exclusive to Gazelli products.

EE: Can a scientific approach to skincare be combined with a natural approach to good effect? Are you able to maintain the puritanical aspect of using naturals when doing this?

In the treatment room it’s quite technical – this is the influence of my mother, Dr.Hamzayeva; it’s all about unique massage techniques with products applied in varying temperatures to achieve the best results. Everything before and after that reflects my vision and world – a romantic, creative and culturally rich experience with exceptional attention to detail and quality.

Jamila: Of course you can. As long as you develop the right balance of ingredients in the formulas created. We found that instead of using a big dose of one type of ingredient, it is often blending small doses of several ingredients all specifically sourced to work in synergy with each other and to reinforce each others properties and efficacy that leads to really incredible results. EE: What is the inspiration behind Gazelli? Jamila: Incredible ingredients, passion for knowledge and constantly improving oneself, and multifaceted woman - as the healer, the nurturer, the lover of beauty and culture, the practical woman, and the woman who takes pleasure in making an impact on the world around her. EE: Do you have a signature ingredient(s)? Jamila: Yes definitely, I think our key strength is our unique formulations and our ‘hero’ ingredients. The most unique being our White Oil found only in the Naftalan region of Azerbaijan and nowhere else in the world. What also makes it special is that my mother Dr. Zarifa Hamzayeva 122

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

EE: What differentiates Gazelli Spa treatments from other Spa treatments? Jamila: Each treatment is like a journey, which leads you through a romantic and poetic passage to begin, then on to the discovery of different sensations, textures and aromas, and at the end the acquisition of priceless knowledge and insight.

EE: Are the Gazelli products tailored to specific skin types? Jamila: The main ingredient, Gazelli’s White Oil used in our Triple Youth range, works to regenerate the skin, while protecting and nourishing at the same time and therefore works with different skin types. Additionally each product is multifunctional which means that with the help of our skincare consultants and supporting material you are able to change the way you use the range of products, over the course of time, depending on what your skin needs at that specific moment. What’s wonderful as well is that we have both mothers and daughters using our products – I guess the combination of my mother and myself as founders behind this retail range have made it this way. We created something that worked for her and me. Of course the professional products that we use in treatments are much more targeted and concentrated. All the treatments are supported

Beauty

saviour and I also use it on my hands and lips when the weather gets extremely cold! EE: Advice for those who suffer from acne? Jamila: If you get acne as an adult it can cause great frustration and result in extreme low confidence. I think what’s most important is to tackle it at it’s root and find the reason behind it. As part of the initial pre-treatment consultation in our spas we always offer a food intolerance test supported by a list of lifestyle questions. It’s only after all these things are put together the right ‘global’ approach is prescribed that leads to great results. Also patience and determination really help – that often means giving your skin time to recover and not picking your skin! EE: Does switching products, or mixing product brands, upset one’s beauty regime?

with an in-depth consultation and analysis that helps us develop an individual approach to each customer that leads to astounding results. EE: What is the key to anti-ageing? Jamila: Start taking care of your skin from a very young age – I am very happy my mother passed this knowledge down to me. Teaching yourself simple steps of daily skincare regime and sticking to them no matter what; even if you are extremely tired.

Jamila: If you have found something that works for your skin at it’s current state, I would say use at least the focal steps in the regime like the face cream, the serum and the eye cream all from the same range. Since the same main active ingredient in the range is used in each product, each step will reinforce the other and you will therefore achieve the best results. Also if you start mixing same types of products from different brands, for example using two different regenerative day creams at the same time, it will be difficult to monitor what best suits your skin and if there is any progress. It is of course also crucial to re-examine your skin periodically to ensure that you adapt how you use your products depending on your skin state and other surrounding factors at each stage.

EE: Your fail-safe product?

EE: Where do you stand on cosmetic surgery both invasive and non-invasive?

Jamila: It has to be the Ultra Nourishing Saviour Mask from our Triple Youth™ range. I travel a lot and often balance my work, being a mother and socializing – which of course leads to often needing quick fixes and I absolutely love this one. It’s my powerful radiance booster, after flight

Jamila: I am the kind of person that believes a woman is beautiful in all ages. I do believe that a woman should dedicate time to herself and look after herself to make the most out of what she was given naturally, even if it requires hard work and will take longer than a prick here and a tuck

there. But often I find that the rich inner world of a woman that you build through knowledge, experience and the confidence that you acquire through the years is what gives a woman true beauty. It’s the eyes and the smile that really show a woman in her full beautiful light.

our own lifestyle range that would symbolize the Gazelli world that surrounds the skincare. It is so rich with a lovely feeling of romance, touching moments and a unique approach to knowledge and inner growth through discovery and journeys.

EE: Are your products safe to use during pregnancy? Jamila: Yes, all our products go through testing in both our laboratories and additionally supported by an independent laboratory in France.

EE: What is the future in terms of global footprint for Gazelli? Jamila: With an incredible unveiling of our first Gazelli House spa concept later this year in London the journey will continue into Europe. It is definitely going to be a slow but steady growth, ensuring that the right type of foundation is built for the brand outside Azerbaijan.

But an important factor during pregnancy is due to the changes in the organism sometimes you can develop unexpected reactions to certain things. For example your senses are altered and obscured. Scent of a certain product that you have been using for years can suddenly start to irritate you. So once more individual approach applies, you have to find what suits you best at that point. EE: Your go-to for makeup, perfume and haircare? Jamila: I am very loyal to all things Gazelli – which means that haircare is taken care of. I’m extremely off perfume at the moment, maybe it’s a stage I am going through, but for me the slight scent of skincare that stays on the skin and your natural aroma is the perfect mixture. Make-up, like fashion, changes drastically from season to season, so I often switch from brand to brand. Some of my favourites are Becca loose eyeshadows, Tom Ford red lipstick and Shavata eyebrow pencil though. EE: Do you have plans to expand into these lines of Beauty? Jamila: Everyone at our company believes that it’s best to stick to what you know best and what you are an expert in. Gazelli has years of experience and incredible formulations that really underline the ‘care’ aspect - Skincare, Bodycare and Haircare. We would never go into make-up or say hair styling products. The only direction that I have been working to expand is in creating 124

EL ESTILO* asks Leonora Bamford - the mastermind behind THE goto blog for yummy mummies, The BABAblog - for her top tips in all things pregnancy and beyond... Top Ten Tips During Pregnancy 1) Bank up your sleep. Something I never did, and I really regret. Get into bed after lunch, and have a really good old-fashioned nap. 2) Be selfish. This is the one time in your life when you don't have to run around doing things for other people. Learn to say 'no'. Take time to read books. My dear friend Zita West has recently brought out a book called ‘Your Pregnancy Companion’. It's so exciting to read about what's happening inside your body. 3) Spend time with your husband. Although you've got a little one in your tummy, cherish the last months, just the two of you. Go to the cinema, get takeouts, walk in the park. 4) Keep active. I love my Yoga and Pilates, and I was lucky to feel well enough to keep practising throughout my pregnancy, and I'm sure that's why I bounced back so quickly. 5) Follow a hobby or a passion. I did a tapestry cushion when I was pregnant, for both of my children, I spent hours mapping them out and choosing colours and they love that I made them especially for them. 6) Start a diary. I started a diary for both of my children a couple of months in and my son loves me reading excerpts, especially the ones where I call him 'the baby' before coming up with a name. 7) Get cooking. I'm obsessed with cooking, but I rarely have time. There are so many wonderful 125

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

cookbooks out there, many dedicated to pregnancy and eating for two. I love Annabel Carmel and The High Energy Cookbook. I really enjoyed learning about food, and preparing things that were good for my bump and me. 8) I got quite bad morning sickness in the first trimester, and one thing that seemed to work was a pulse bracelet from Blossom Mother and Child. 9) It's so ugly, but I really did swear by my pregnancy pillow. I wish I could get away with still using it. Lots of people sell them, and it's really a personal preference, but I had a huge v-shaped one and the Dream Genie, and it really helps support you while you're sleeping. 10) Comfort was quite important to me. I had a mix of normal and maternity wear. My favourites being ASOS, Whistles, Topshop and Marcus Lupfer. Don't forget, it's not a crime to feel sexy when you're pregnant and want to look nice. Preparation I'm a meticulous list maker, so preparation started the day that I found I was pregnant. 1) My first port of call was to download 'Baby Bump', an app that was invaluable to me. It almost became obsessive. I also love the NCT and NHS websites, where you can input your due date and they will update you on each stage week by week. 2) Everyone bangs on about a birth plan, I didn't get too caught up in it, but I do think it's important to have an idea of what you want, but

Pregnancy

don't get too set on it, it will only upset you if you're adamant to have a water birth at home and you get rushed in for a C section. Relax and try and keep calm.

10) Lastly, the amazing Mary Ashton wrote a piece on bringing your baby home. She's been a maternity nurse for years and really knows her stuff. Well worth a read.

3) John Lewis was wonderful for stocking up the nursery, they have what I would describe is almost like a wedding list, where you can talk to an expert, hey'll whizz you around the department explaining what's what. Go with a list of what you need, and don't get bounced into too many incidentals.

Tips for New Mums

4) Amazon is also wonderful for finding age appropriate paraphernalia. 5) JoJo Maman Bebe is one of my favourite shops, mainly things that you really don't need, but you really want. My brother bought me a swaddle pod from there, which cocoons the baby and makes them feel like they're back in the womb, making them sleep through the night easier. 6) The first important thing I bought was a moses basket, which my children lived in for the first few months of life. That, and swaddles from Aden and Anais are really useful. 7) Nappy bag. I was so excited about having a perfectly stocked nappy bag. My sister-in-law has an incredible company called Pink Lining, and I couldn't wait to stock up one of her new designs. 8) A couple of months before my due date, I packed up my hospital bag, and kept it under the kitchen table - just in case. The most important things I found, were nighties for me, loads of baby grows for the new arrival and Arnica pills. A change of clothes for my husband, and biscuits to sweeten the midwife are also a must! I wrote an extensive list on my blog that may or may not be useful. 9) You're not allowed to leave the hospital unless you have a regulations car seat, I went for the latest Maxi Cosi with head support, and it worked well for us. 126

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

1) Give yourself a break and let people help. 2) Try and get half an hour to yourself each day, draw a warm bath, with a sprinkle of Epsom Salt and a dash of Lavender. A bath is soothing, healing and great if you have sore boobs from breastfeeding. On that note, Lanolin is a fantastic product. 3) Don't let anyone judge you - everyone seems to have a view, but I used to smile sweetly, nod and say 'what a good idea, I shall definitely try that!' 4) If you're breastfeeding, make sure you eat and drink plenty. The weight seems to fall off anyway. 5) Make sure you have a good nursing chair, and although it looks ridiculous, a good nursing pillow. 6) I was lucky enough to feel up to working out throughout my pregnancy, but take it slow after the birth. I waited for my 6-week check, although I started with my pelvic floor exercises. We've got a great article by The Portland Hospital on The Baba Blog with advice and tips on how to exercise. Also, don't forget your body will still be full of the relaxant hormone, so be careful not to do it and injure yourself. 7) Enjoy walking with your baby in the pram, something I was proud as punch to do, but don't forget, they can't regulate their heat. If you arrive at a coffee shop and strip off a coat, two jumpers and a wooly hat, do the same for your little one and keep an eye on their temperature by feeling the back of their neck. 8) I was paranoid about accidents, and for a

Pregnancy

present my husband asked somebody from The New Parent Company to come to the house and do a demonstration on choking and resuscitation etc for the whole family. 9) Get yourself a baby book, and keep a diary of what's happening with your baby. This is a very useful tool; not only for clocking milestones, but also getting into a feeding routine and helpful to look back at previous behaviour if you're baby is feeling unwell. 10) Something my father told me and it was very good advice - get your hair done. I felt like a drowned water rat for the week after the birth, and on his advice I hotfooted it to the salon for a trim and a blow dry, a quick manicure, and was ready for dinner with my husband. Don't forget your husband, he'll be feeling unsettled and will need some attention too! Where to Go 1) Baby Concierge, Baby List, John Lewis, Mother Care are all fantastic one-stop-shops for anything you could possibly need. 2) Dragons on Walton St does the most beautiful Victorian Moses basket, which still sits in my daughter's bedroom, filled with teddies, I like to think she might pass it on to her daughter one day. 3) Alex and Alexa is the ultimate one-stop-shop for cool gear when it comes to children. A bit like Net-a-Porter for kids. 4) JoJo Maman Bebe is great for really useful extra bits and pieces. 5) I swear by Aden and Anais swaddles which they now sell in England. I used to make my husband fill his suitcase with them when he went to New York and one day I'm going to turn all the tatty off-cuts into a lovely little patchwork quilt. 6) Monkey Music, Pippa's Poppets, Gymboree and 127

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

Budokwai were all very much a part of my life for the first year and a website I recently came across, www.kidsinchelsea.com is brilliant for finding local activities etc. They also cover the rest of London. 7) Aromatherapy Associates is my guilty pleasure and if I ever get an hour to myself, any of their treatments are pure bliss. They also do great pregnancy treatments. 8) I recently came across WOW MUM, a great little app that locates where you are and tells you where to eat, play or get pampered. 9) London has so many wonderful parks, that in the summer I like nothing more than walking with the family and having a picnic under a tree. 10) There's an ever-growing trend for baby clubs, like The Purple Dragon, Cupcake and Maggie & Rose, and many of my friends find them to be a sanity saver and a great place to be able to sit down with people who are going through the same sorts of things.

THE BRAND: We seek make lingerie purchasing easier and more inspiring for women by leveraging brand fitting expertise to recommend women their own unique lingerie wardrobe. Unfortunately, most women wear the wrong bra. By directing women to styles that fit their size and silhouette, they are more likely to find lingerie that fits their body and their personality. BACKGROUND: My business partner, Guillaume Kretz, and I started the company while we were at Columbia Business School in 2011/12. I was working on a line of panties with my aunt, and he was working on the e-commerce strategy for Chantelle. I was a bit frustrated with how lingerie was marketed to women and also felt that lingerie should be an exciting but easy part of a woman’s life (namely a woman should get recommendations specific to her). We were in a class called “Launching New Ventures”, and he pitched the idea of a Warby Parker meets Netflix for bras. I immediately thought – my goodness, why doesn’t this exist! One year later we are in Berlin with our own company, Édition Lingerie. MORNING TO EVENING: I wake up around 7:00 a.m. every day and make my morning coffee, while checking emails and organizing my day on TeuxDeux. I really love this 128

MEET THE TEAM: We are 8 people now, and it’s really exquisite. We are a very international team, and everyone brings their own unique skill sets to the table. Guillaume is my business partner and he’s really great. We are quite different, but have similar values, which is important when you’re running a company. I’m really looking forward to seeing what our team can achieve together. THE FUTURE:

to-do list organizer because it’s incredibly simple with a great design, keeping me focused on the things my team and I need to achieve. I’m usually at work by 8:30/9:00 a.m. and my day consists of focusing on the different consumer experience dimensions – namely the content, website, and marketing. I absolutely adore storytelling and graphic design, so working across all of these dimensions is such a joy. I also find tremendous meaning in what we are working on – we really love lingerie because it’s a part of fashion that no one really sees, but which is one of the most important pieces of your daily fashion ensemble. I almost always get home late in the evening. When I am home I usually cook some dinner while chatting with my boyfriend or family on the phone. My day always finishes with looking through my Google Reader feed to check all of the design blogs I love – Ffffound, designspiration, Things Organized Neatly, Swiss Miss, All Things Stylish. DIET: I’m a bit of a seagull, always picking away at things. I like to take time to enjoy food with the people I care about, and I try to cook as much as I can. Berlin also has great markets and restaurants, so I can’t complain! 129

Édition Lingerie’s purpose statement is “Through empathy and innovation, we help women feel their best. One bra at a time.” This is really our overarching goal. Right now, we think the best way to achieve this mission is to use our brand expertise to recommend products to women, which will suit a woman’s body shape and provide an answer to the problems she has with her current bra wardrobe. In addition, we provide a risk-free, try-at-home experience. Trying lingerie in the comfort of her own surroundings, with the dresses or clothing she will be wearing with the bra, is a much better experience for many women than undressing in a store. How we try to achieve our mission in the future will change – especially with all the new

innovations that surface. But the core purpose of why we are here will stay the same – to help women feel their best, one bra at a time. *** Snow or sand? Sand Favourite book? Hmm, that’s tough – so many great ones. My former boss Stacey gave me On the Shortness of Life along with a bag of pistachios (my favorite) after I left my position to finish school. The book and her observations of life always stuck with me. Favourite colour? Tangerine – it's such a happy, friendly color? Desert island read? Oh, I'm definitely a magazine girl. I would say Monocle, Gentlewoman, Offscreen, El Estilo, Vogue, Elle… I find magazines really exquisite, and often get inspired for our own magazine on the site.

“I would like to be an elegant grandmother, busy running after my many grandchildren”

At work I listen to… Monocle Radio At home I listen to… Monocole Radio, The Stack and The Entrepreneurs. Home is… with the people I love, which is quite spread out around the world right now.

Happiness is… a Saturday afternoon in Do You Read Me? in Berlin – it's such a lovely shop, and it carries quite a few of my favorite magazines. My inspiration is… my family – and that extends to my friends as I come from a really small family, so my friends are really part of my family. They are all really exquisite people, who never cease to inspire me. Favourite scent? Chanel Chance Childhood dream career? What I'm doing right now – can’t be any happier creating this for women. When I grow old… I would like to be an elegant grandmother, busy running after my many grandchildren. And hopefully being a consultant to Édition Lingerie in some capacity – even when I’m 90, I want to stay involved! Experience Edition Lingerie www.editionlingerie.de

EL ESTILO* speaks to SHIRIN VALIPOUR, founder of the Future Organics skincare brand, ORICO EE: What inspired you to start up Orico Skincare and how has your journey been from start to end? Shirin: It has been a dream of mine to create an urban skincare range which offers the best of both worlds - certified organic and advanced skincare. I have always loved organics but somehow wished for more from them, to have more clinical research, easier to absorb textures, faster to use, more subtle aromatherapy and more affordable. This has not really been possible up to recent years as science was more focused on finding cheaper synthetic ingredient substitutes, but now that the Naturals market is growing, more global laboratories are focusing on natural bioactives to clinically test their performance. So it’s now a very exciting time to create a modern organic brand. My journey has been amazing, from the hardest challenges to the most exhilarating moments. Working with the latest ingredients to develop products has been very hard and it has taken many months to perfect the formulas. The journey has not ended yet; we have just reached the first destination with the brand development – we have many more to go. EE: What defines an effective Skincare brand? Shirin: A brand which works for your skin, personality and lifestyle. One with which you have an affinity, one which you trust, see and feel the difference it makes to your skin.

Beauty

“A few weeks ago a mum used our Little Love baby massage oil on her baby boy's cradle cap and it disappeared.”

EE: What differentiates Orico from other brands and what is your brand philosophy? In two words, I would say 'Future Organics' - focusing on pushing organics into the future versus trying to reflect the old world apothecaries. Natural ingredients are powerful and the future. Our main brand philosophy is to care for the skin. A few weeks ago a mum used our Little Love baby massage oil on her baby boy's cradle cap and it disappeared. To hear this for me has been one of the most thrilling and heart-warming moments. Orico is an all-encompassing brand from offering the purest, most effective easy to use skincare, health and life balance. We are cruelty-free and very proud to sponsor World Land Trust to help the circle of life. Positivity, urban lifestyle, fashion and confident beauty are also important to us. Beauty is an attitude and organic is sexy! EE: What are Orico's key ingredients? Shirin: There are so many, I have chosen a combination of key ingredients for each product, specifically for the purpose, and effectiveness, of that product… Pure Uplift face firming elixir contains clinically-proven bioactives of Millet seed and Oak tannin to smooth and lift the skin. The Hi Rise eye elixir contains Rhodiola Rosea bioactive. There’s Mukul extract active in 132

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

our Full Cup bust and neck elixir, which helps to naturally plump up the lipids in the breasts. Botanical Moringa extract purifies the skin and helps to block out pollution. Green Microalgae active in our U Turn stretch mark elixir is naturally rich in peptides and helps to increase collagen production in order to reduce stretch marks … those are just a few examples...

“Consumers will start studying their skincare ingredients more closely, as they do now with their food.”

Essential oil aromatherapy is also key to Orico. Our signature blend with Mandarin and Orange oils has an uplifting effect, which that is why we call it a happiness booster. For our Little Love baby collection we have gentle protecting ingredients and a light, calming sweet orange essential oil. Some of our other key ingredients are Tamanu, Kukui, Baobab, Kigelia, Red Seaweed active, Flaxseed, Rosehip, Argan, Hibiscus... EE: Orico ticks all the 'no-nasties' boxes - will products containing parabens and sulphates eventually be made redundant by brands such as Orico? Shirin: Well... I believe for sure that more and more consumers will start studying their skincare ingredients more closely, as they do now with their food. However, it will take a long time for them make full changes. Some synthetics deliver a shortterm illusion of beauty, such as silicones, which in effect cover the skin, giving an appearance of ‘smoothing’ whilst actually blocking the pores from producing its own sebum. Petroleum jelly is another one – it makes lips look 133

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

'glossy' but does not nourish them. Then you have synthetic fragrances too, but those too are becoming more widely known now. As science focuses more on natural ingredients I am sure more natural solutions can be found in the future, but for now there are still many obstacles in the way. One example is hair care, which is very hard to formulate within organic certification to deliver the results we want (shiny silicone coated hair). There is certainly a sea change but it will take time.

EE: What is your Skincare advice? Shirin: Keeping pores clean and feeding it with essential skin food to enable the skin to keep healthy naturally. Prevention is better than trying to find a cure. EE: Does nutrition go hand in hand with good skin? If so, what is your nutritional advice for healthy looking skin? Shirin: Yes absolutely. Skin is the outer reflection of health and needs to be enriched from the inside. I could write a book on this, but if I had to pick top pointers it would be a balanced diet with foods which can provide omega 3&6 oils, antioxidants, zinc and vitamins Bs. It is also important to understand what damages the skin such as processed sugars, which cause glycation and is one of the major contributors to wrinkles. EE: How to live longer? Shirin: Making the most of every minute! EE: In your washbag? (Orico) Face wash, light oils, eye cream and a body brush… 134

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

EE: Travel essentials? Shirin: Skincare to use on the flight, face, eyes, lips and hands. A sun hat for beach destinations. EE:Favourite destination Shirin: I have two! New York is like a second home and Ambergris Caye, Belize, my heaven on earth. EE: Success is... Shirin: Making a difference by helping others. EE: What can we expect from Orico in 2013? Shirin: Where do I start? So many plans: New products which are in development. More focus on health and beauty. We are opening our first store in Chelsea, London this spring and have just launched in the USA. My biggest wish is for Orico to help change the way organics are seen and to bring their benefit to many more people. For Orico products Visit www.oricolondon.com

EL ESTILO* talks to Ksenia Titov about her new skincare line SKINALCHEMY also just created an eye cream, and face cream for more oily skin, and updated a lip balm that can be used as a salve. Inspiration: I wanted to combine my love of science with a desire to create something of my own. I wanted to make luxurious skin care products that were natural, organic, and safe to use. Later, when I got pregnant and had children, I wanted to make sure that only the most gentle and ‘clean’ products were used on their delicate skin. Distinguishing factors: What distinguishes my products is, firstly, the quality of ingredients. I always buy the best I can afford and my ingredients are very expensive. 99% of my ingredients are organic (not 100% because some things just don’t exist as ‘organic’), or certified to use in organic creams by the Soil Association.

After studying Biology at Imperial College, Ksenia decided she wanted to combine her knowledge of science with a hands-on approach and signed up to London College of Fashion to study Skin Therapy and Health Studies. Ksenia graduated and soon used her expertise to create a makeup line, starting with eye shadows and lipsticks. Soon, however, she decided that she would only like to use natural ingredients in her products and so moved into skincare, setting up her very own cosmetic line, Skinalchemy… The line: At the moment, I have 10 products certified by the lab (a face serum, body cream, hand cream, face cream, face mask, lip balm, healing cream for dry skin, skin cleanser, exfoliating cleanser and anti-cellulite oil). I have 135

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

Secondly, there is a distinctly personal aspect to the line - all the products are hand-made by me and I control every step of the process vigorously. A lot of care – and love - goes into each product. Thirdly, I choose only the most effective botanicals (oils and extracts) that work synergistically with the skin, helping it to heal, glow, and restore health and vitality. I’ve been buying the ingredients from the same company for many years, and I also work on regular courses with them. I am always assured by their professionalism, integrity and rigorous quality control. Unlike many skincare products on the market, I do not promote my products as having ‘instant results’. Rather, I suggest that they are like wholesome, organic ‘food’ for one’s skin. The effect will be noticeable over time.

Beauty

Hero product: It has to be my Anti-ageing Super Serum. I use it at night, but some people use it in the morning as well. They have told me that after using it they stopped with their usual moisturiser because the skin’s condition improved so much. It contains a powerful blend of vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids that help renew, lift and firm the skin, and a powerful blend of essential oils that balance, heal and rejuvenate. Plus it smells delicious! Beauty regime: In the evenings I cleanse using my Skin Cleanser and Clarisonic brush. Once or twice a week I use an extra exfoliator and my Rejuvenating Mask. Then I apply my Anti-ageing Super Serum everywhere (under eyes, whole face, neck, décolleté, back of hands). In the mornings it is usually just a rinse with warm water and a vitamin C serum (not my own, unfortunately, some things you can only create at a lab), and on top of that, my eye cream and my face cream. For the body, I dry brush morning and night and apply my Anti-cellulite Oil. Beauty inspiration: Professionally, Jane Iredale. She inspired me to try to make my own make up. Since I don’t do that anymore, I buy her products instead. Aesthetically, Cate Blanchet. She has the most beautiful, luminous skin! Growing old gracefully: This is a sensitive topic for many people. I believe that there are so many scientific advances now in the field of lasers, IPLs, et cetera. They produce good (and often great) results. I often use an analogy: you can eat the most healthy foods on earth, but if you don’t exercise, your body will not be at its best. It applies similarly to the skin: you can apply the most natural, organic, wholesome products, but sometimes the skin just needs that little extra bit of help. As someone who used to work with advanced cosmetic treatments at a clinic, I saw the results first hand, and when the time comes, I will try some of the treatments out. I do believe in ageing gracefully, and I do believe that you don’t necessarily have to look 10 years younger, but you should look good no matter what age. 136

EL ESTILO* | Spring 2013

Expecting miracles: That topic gets me a bit annoyed. The problem runs much deeper than skin: people nowadays expect instant results from most aspects of life. Very often they lose the sight of what it is they want and what is really important, and instant gratification becomes an obsession. Luckily, there has been a shift in many people’s perspectives. Organic foods are now quite the norm (not just a fashion, as it used to be a few years back); there is a Slow Food movement, and yes, more and more people are turning back to ‘basics’ and seeking more natural products to use on their skin, for their home, etc. I firmly believe that natural products can and should compete with high-end ‘instant miracles’, and as consumers now become more informed about the quality and origin of ingredients, so they increasingly choose something that is natural. But of course, there will always be people who get hypnotised by flashy advertisement campaigns, thinking that a heavy price tag can deliver ‘real’ results. Future plans for Skinalchemy: Well, it is early days yet, but I would like a good Spa to carry my

product line, especially if their ethos is based around organic and natural products. Inflight essentials: I travel a lot, and often long haul. The present security regulations and having two small children limit my choices of what to take! I always have my lip balm (I just updated it, so it can be used as a salve on dry patches anywhere), and eye cream (which I use on my hands as well). Hair/make up brands: I use Jane Iredale mineral make up. Because I colour my hair with Inoa dye (no ammonia), I use their professional shampoo and conditioner. Favourite scent: I don’t have one as there are too many! Currently, Jo Malone’s English Pear and Freesia. Preferred flowers: Peonies, tulips, lilacs. Favourite destination: We actually like to see new places as much as we can. However, my kids’ favourite place to escape the cold is Mauritius. Home is… where my heart is, where my family is. I used to think Russia was my home (and a piece of my heart is still there, at a small town where I was born), but now London is my home. I’ve spent (literally) half of my life in London, and I love this city. 137

Pack: Mosquito-repellant. Antigua is renowned by suffering from mosquitos and although the resort makes every effort to keep them at bay with nightly room fumigations, it’s worth spraying on the repellent to be safe.

We recommend the Luminous C+C facial – an antioxidant facial treatment packed with Vitamin C to combat the signs of premature ageing Extras: If you like a particular baby-sitter make sure you book them in advance –the resort is very good at allocating baby-sitters to families they know from previous visits Brunch: Indigo on the Beach has great, healthy food with an accent on grills, fresh seafood and salads. WHERE: Six Senses Resort Zighy Bay, Oman

“This is the perfect spot for eco-chic warriors” THE RESORT: A 2 hour drive from Dubai and set behind the rugged mountainscape of Oman. You can hold on to your seatbelt and make the drive over the mountains to enter the resort, or alternatively enter by boat or … paraglider! This is the perfect spot for eco-chic warriors -self-sustainability is the buzzword. The resort purifies its own water and rooms are done to a high standard but utilizing natural products wherever possible. Bikes are provided to get to and from the beach, restaurants and spa. THE HIGHLIGHT: The beautiful main swimming pool and salt water pool. THE SPA: An oasis of calm. Wonderfully big treatment rooms where all you can hear is the natural sound of the birds outside and a distant boat on the water. The Six Senses products are excellent, but the other products stocked here are also great. Wind down post-treatment in the relaxation area, where you can flick through magazines, rest and enjoy a cup of ginger tea and a sticky date – picked fresh from the tree. THE TREATMENT: EL ESTILO* recommends the Balinese Full Body Massage. Firm smooth strokes and acupressure make for total relax. 143
