EDITOR’S LETTER
C
hristmas is over and all that remains in its tinselly wake are pine needles, wrapping paper, cold turkey cuts and chocolates. The cold days no longer speak of twinkling lights and merry faces, but rather January crash diets, harsh snow tans and the ominous rainy months leading up to distant Spring. That is why EL ESTILO* has decided to provide you with an enchanting pre-Spring, slim edition, to brighten up the Christmas wind-down. In this edition, we have picked out the Best Beauty Buys in Skincare, makeup and haircare so you can look and feel as bright and beautiful as you do in Spring. For a helping hand, we’ve also selected the best facials in London for specific skin concerns. We go behind the scenes in our Beauty Expert section to provide an insight into Beauty’s leading names. Our aim is to offer a greater understanding into products and treatments and to bring you closer to the people creating your skin and hair solutions, so that you can rest assured that the product you invest in is the best suited for your skin . In our 2013 Spring Selection we’ve picked out SS13’s leading designer trends, to help you steer away from the Sales racks and invest instead in a brighter, more enticing wardrobe for the months ahead. Finally, we transport you across the world, away from the customary winter ski jaunts to the beating sun, crystal waters and tropical colours of the Indian Ocean. Winter no longer seems quite so gloomy ...

The effect is meditative and your skin is left so plump and radiant you can forgo reapplying your makeup. Make sure you watch carefully as Emma teaches you how to properly cleanse the skin – using a cloth and pulling gently in horizontal and vertical motions (the direction of the skin’s cell formation) – when incorporated into your daily cleansing routine this will have immediate and long-lasting benefits to your skin’s appearance. When Amber became a mother, she assumed the luxurious beauty products she enjoyed using would also be available for her children. After struggling to find decent products for her family, however, she began exploring baby skincare and Dandelion Baby was born. After giving up her career in Beauty PR to settle her family in the country, Amber also trained as a Kundalini yoga teacher, an experience that has added a holistic element in the health advice that she gives on the website. Dandelion Baby has become a site dedicated to the Health & Beauty of Mother & Child, sharing inspirational advice during pregnancy, for mothers and their children. EL ESTILO* speaks to Amber to get the inside track on beauty, babies and mothercare… EE*: What are the most effective creams and/or oils for pregnant mothers to prevent stretch marks? Amber: Melvita Pregnancy Oil, Mama Mio Tummy Rub and Bio oil are three of our favourites. To get the best results you should apply these morning and night. If you get a few stretch marks, there’s no need to panic – these can be reduced and soothed by using Bio Oil for a good three months after the birth of your baby. EE*: What is your recommended form of exercise for pregnant mothers? Does one need to ‘tone down’ the exercise type to accommodate more gentle workouts? Amber: If you are a regular gym bunny you can still continue working out. The best thing to do is to speak to your trainer to ask advice about the slight changes you’ll need to make to your usual workout routine. If you love jogging, as long as your doctor is happy that your pregnancy is not high risk, there’s no reason you can’t continue through to around the fifth month. Introducing yoga as well as, or instead of, your usual routine is a great way of keeping supple, toned, relaxed and healthy right up to, and even during, birth. I would also recommend joining a dedicated pregnancy yoga class – it will give you the opportunity to meet like-minded local mums to be. EE*: What should expecting mothers avoid during pregnancy? 48
EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2012
http://www.elestilo.co.uk/
Amber: There’s no need to radically change your habits if your pregnancy is progressing without any concerns. Your doctor will take you through food recommendations, and those to avoid other than alcohol. I would recommend that you cut back, or completely cut out, coffee and you should try to get a better night’s sleep. My best advice is to listen to what you body is trying to tell you, rest as often as you need, and eat what you fancy, however strange the combinations! It’s especially important to also keep well hydrated.
products. If they’re organic too then it’s a bonus.
EE*: Do supplements really work?
EE*: Babies often need a barrier cream to put in the nappy area to prevent nappy rash – what is best to use?
Amber: A folic acid supplement is essential when you plan to have a family and during the first three months of pregnancy to ensure good spine development and avoid spinal cord defects, such as spina bifida. You can take tablet supplements or you can get a new mineral water that contains the same RDA of folic acid called WaterBaby. This is a great alternative if you are suffering from morning sickness, which affects many of us in the first trimester, and ensures that you keep fully hydrated throughout the day. EE*: What about non-organic products – are they safe for delicate newborn skin? Amber: Yes, organic does not necessary mean best quality. Aim to buy toiletries for babies and children that are natural and do not contain SLS, Parabens, DEA, TEA or PEG’s. These are clearly labelled on good
EE*: In your experience, what are the best baby washes and shampoos - particularly for babies with sensitive skin and who have cradle cap/eczematous skin? Amber: The Weleda brand is fantastic for sensitive skin. They have a great line up of products from massage oil, creamy baby wash and rich emollient cream which treat dry and eczema prone skin naturally.
Amber: Organic Babies Nappy Cream – it’s a fantastic all round natural barrier cream. EE*: What’s your nappy bag staple? Amber: Badger Chamomile balm. It’s the perfect product for both mother and baby – you can use it as a lip balm and on dry skin patches or as a nappy cream. EE*: How do you make baby bath time fun? Amber: If you have a toddler and baby there are great anti-slip bath mats with built-in seat supports, so that you can be a little more hands-free. You need to be confident with your kids, show them how to get involved with washing themselves so that there is no apprehension about bath times.
“A folic acid supplement is essential when you plan to have a family.”
Let them enjoy bath toys – most babies love stacking cups, and if you like natural products we love Hevea rubber bath toys. Bubbles are a great for bath time but use a natural product - the bubbles may not be as big, as less foaming agent is used, but this means that young skin won’t be irritated. EE*: Advice to mothers-to-be Amber: In my capacity as a yoga teacher I like to encourage relaxation. If you find this difficult, join a birth class or yoga, pilates or tai chi, so that you can find ways to unwind. Stress and worry is detrimental to our health so try to do all you can to give yourself time out, especially if you’re working up to the birth of your baby. Enjoy the new awareness of your body that naturally comes with pregnancy and take care of it in the foods you eat and the active lifestyle you enjoy. You’ve got to smile and enjoy all the changes that you will go through physically and emotionally: these will stand you in good stead as you prepare for your new role of motherhood. Harvard and Oxford educated Dr. Marko Lens knows how to deliver good skin. He not only specialises in plastic and reconstructive surgery, invasive non-surgical facial rejuvenation and specialised surgical care for patients with moles, benign skin lesions and skin cancers, but has use his extensive research and in-depth knowledge of the skin functions to produce the advanced skincare range Zelens.
When did you decide to create Zelens and how did you go about choosing ingredients and manufacturers? I was doing a lot of research in skin care and anti-aging since 1993 and I always had a dream to create my line that would be based on my anti-aging research and also clinical experience. However, I realised this only in 2006 when we launched first Zelens line. I was working for so many years on this project. Selection of ingredients was really crucial as I wanted to include only ingredients with proven efficacy. All our formulas contain multiple ingredients and the most difficult part was actually to combine them together and be certain that we achieved excellent balance between them so that they can work in a perfect synergy. I tried several manufacturers and had to test many before deciding who will be our manufacturer. It consumes so much time and energy. However, I wanted to be sure that we have the best possible production of advanced skin care products. What differentiates Zelens from all other brands? Zelens is different from other brands from many aspects. First of all, all products are directly developed by me based on my research in the field of skin cancer and skin aging (sharing common pathway). As I already mentioned we always use multiple ingredients in order to target aging process from different angles. They need to be efficacious and to work in synergy. Current line of products is actually a combination of high-tech ingredients (peptides) with pure molecules extracted from plants. I was inspired a lot by traditional Japanese herbal medicine-Kampo in selecting plants and combining them in one formula. Another 50

issue that we are extremely proud of is our science and clinical results. Instead of individual perception (self-assessment studies) we are doing hard-core research to prove the clinical efficacy of our formulas. You can easily find results of our research in peer-reviewed medical journals such as Internatonal Journal of Dermatology, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology etc. Which ingredients are essential for slowing down the aging process and how do they have their effect on the skin? Many ingredients can demonstrate antiaging effect. Lately many peptides have been developed acting as biomimetic molecules. They target key molecules in our skin to activate several reactions that will have anti-aging effect. The most important thing is that all these molecules penetrates the skin and thus use of sophisticated delivery systems to ensure penetration of these molecules is crucial. Can we expect to see immediate results from a cream? It is a dream of all women- to see instant results. Sometimes you can formulate a cream and have instant effect-tightening or smoothing or brightening. Very often this is just a gimmick effect achieved by ingredients. Usually to see visible results we need 2 to 4 weeks. How do you see skincare products developing over next 5 years? Will there be a time when a product will have the same effect as laser or botox? Te trend is to go toward targeting key molecules in the skin responsible for aging. As you noticed many companies went in genomic direction- testing cream efficacy by looking on the expression of different genes. We could probably develop creams with botox-laser effect but it will be necessary that we develop new delivery systems for those products. Also, we are moving quite away from cosmetics and go into medical direction and as you notice US FDA is doing everything to make sure that no medical claims are made on cosmetic products. Sometimes is difficult to draw a
line between cosmetic and medical and with the development of more efficacious products it will be even more difficult. How should one apply cleanser/ moisturiser? Cleansing is essential to remove impurities and dead surface skin cells. We should do it at least twice a day. It is important that after cleaning we wait few minutes until our skin is completely dry and then we should apply a moisturiser. It is always good to apply moisturiser in circular motions with a light massage of the skin to ensure absorption of the product to the skin but also to stimulate circulation of the skin with a massage. Should skin be left to breathe at night with, say, serum? Night is important for the skin repair and regeneration as we are resting and the skin is not exposed to the environmental aggressors. It is important to nourish the skin and with “no food” there is not way we can replenish skin lipids’ barrier which is crucial in repair. Thus, serum alone is not enough. We should usually have a night cream which is rich in emollients. Do whitening products really work on pigmentation? Are they safe to use? Whitening products can be very efficacious to remove hyperpigmentations and improve skin brightness in general. However, selecting a good product is difficult as there are so many on the market. Japanese went very far in developing these types of products as they are obsessed by skin whitening. Safety-wise we are ok as far as products do not contain kojic acid and arbutin which demonstrated cytotoxic effect (killing cells). Once skin begun to slacken can creams reverse the effect or it is surgery the only real way to resolve it? There is nothing cosmetic that can replace efficacy of a well-performed surgical procedure. However, said that I still believe that the skin tone and firmness can be significantly improved with a regular use of creams that boost collagen production.
What procedure do you consider to be the best for a quick anti-aging fix? Botox and fillers. Chemical peels are also very efficacious but there is a down-time associated with it. Should we use the same products on our hands as we use on our face? Of course. The question is that we do not want to invest the same amount of money for our hands as for our face. What is in the pipeline for Zelens? New exfoliatior combining enzymatic exfoliation with microdermabrasion but without drying the skin. Age-defying serum based on the latest research on telomeres (cells’ biological clocks). Rejuvenating Overnight Treatment that deeply regenerate the skin. Beauty advice… When buying skincare ask to see clinical results. Lifestyle advice… Avoid sun. Do supplements really work? They can do a good job although it is essential to have a good diet. Advise for people who suffer from breakouts Avoid products with mineral oils. They clog the pores and cause breakouts. Most popular treatment Eye lift- eyelid surgery. Recommended make-up brand I love Armani. Most admire Good science. Favourite holiday destination Sicily Favourite book Lynda La Plante! Great author Growing old is ... Aging is a disease!!!!

EL ESTILO* meets CEO of ANNE SEMONIN Aline Marcadet by Olivia Burton Aline: We were the first to offer a tailor-made cosmetic concept. We also have a very different technique to ensure we deliver the optimum results and that is to mix the essential oil and the very last minute…In short, though, our products work. Olivia: Given you have so much on your plate, how are you able to keep on top of the latest research and ensure that the products are in keeping with the latest technologies? Aline: I attend several beauty conferences and I receive regular research, but our products are my ideas. I have my own idea of what works on the skin and how to bottle it. Our ice cubes (Express Radiance Ice Cubes), for example, were not influenced by any technological research, yet they are one of the most effective treatments for your eyes, and no one has done it before. Olivia: How important is the competition? Aline: Looking at our competitors is important for me, not to see what they have, but to assess what they are missing. That gives me inspiration for what to create. Olivia: How do you know which ingredients will work well on the skin?
Olivia: How have you arrived at the position you’re in now at Anne Semonin?
Olivia: Did you change much when initially taking over the brand?
Aline: I bought Anne Semonin ten years ago. I was actually working in Interior Design at the time and designed a friend’s house. My friend then asked me if I’d be interested in designing a spa in Moscow. I was asked which brand would be best to use in the spa….I wanted a French brand. I did my research and came across Anne Semonin.
Aline: I changed everything and I control everything – from real estate and the design of our spas to our packaging, image, treatments and ingredients.
52
EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2012
Olivia: What puts Anne Semonin products ahead of the numerous other beauty brands?
Aline: Testing. I get everyone in the office to test all of our products. You soon see what works and what doesn’t. Olivia: But how do you choose your ingredients? Aline: We are always looking for new ingredients and new technology for our packaging. Our laboratories are also very important because different labs are needed for different product types. Products

containing marine enzymes for example, will naturally need to be contained as close as possible to their source. Olivia: How quickly do you turn around an idea? Aline: It’s a very long process. We have a body cream in manufacture at the moment and we’re looking at two years for its release. Olivia: How do you cater for different skin types and skin colour? Aline: We have one main base to our products that we believe works regardless of skin type or colour. The additions to this base which make up our range of serums and oils then provide a the tailored solution to different skin types. Olivia: What are your own personal hero products? Aline: The ice cubes, of course, and then the mineral mask, which smells very bad but works so well. It’s amazing for whitening the skin and for providing radiance. C’est un serum precieux! Olivia: Talk me through your personal beauty routine… Aline: I use Anne Semonin cleansing milk and toner in the morning and evening; in the morning I follow with a cream, in the evening with a decent serum. I like to use a few good products that work – I’m not one who spends hours at the dressing table. Olivia: What do you believe to be the most important factor for maintaining youthful looking skin? Aline: Sleep. It is by far the most important
thing for your skin because it is whilst you’re sleeping that your skin heals and regenerates. Also, good hydration and a healthy life. These are essential if you want to have good skin past 30. For me, a good life is important too. Eating well, enjoying nice things in moderation, having a good time…it all has its effect on how much your skin glows. It shows through if you’re happy …
Semonin design concept and looking at how to create a consistency around the brand to raise brand recognition – perhaps in a department store, perhaps in our own shop. And in terms of the products themselves, we will continue to head down the path of understanding DNA and how to apply it to a product to create the ultimate in bespoke skincare.
Olivia: You didn’t mention the sun! Aline: That’s because we need sun! In moderation, of course. When I’m on holiday I will always go in the sun, and I don’t use crazy protection, but I make sure I always have some shade and a moderate SPF. We need sun just like we need the sea. It is actually beneficial to your skin. It also enhances your mood. Olivia: And what are your thoughts on invasive and non-invasive cosmetic surgery? Aline: After turning 40 your hormones radically change your skin. Laser is excellent at helping to maintain collagen. Vitamins too. But woman who use too much Botox and filler? I don’t like it. Olivia: Where does the future of the beauty industry lie, in your opinion? Aline: I think cosmetologists will end up working more and more with genetic products - checking your DNA and prescribing it to a specific beauty product to guarantee that it’ll be effective. One cream for one person. That’s the future. Olivia: And what are the next steps for Anne Semonin?
ALINE’S FAVOURITES: Makeup: Georgio Armani, the foundation especially. Perfume: A selection, usually something with notes of grapefruit and lemon. Jo Malone, Chloe, Frederick Malle... Paris restaurants: Le Stresa, Orient extreme for Japanese, Voltaire for a traditional French brasserie. Paris spa: Park hyatt spa, very beautiful and cosy. London spa: Aman spa London. Beautiful spa close to London is lucknan park.

r. Howard Murad knows how to deliver good skin. Dermatologist, FAAD, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA, and dubbed ‘The Celebrity Skin Doctor’, he understands what is needed to fight cellulite, keep wrinkles at bay and attain a flawlesslooking complexion. EL ESTILO* meets the man behind Murad… Brand philosophy Murad is based on my three-prong Inclusive Health philosophy which looks at the body as a whole and helps resolve specific concerns as part of improving the health of the whole person. The three prongs are: 1. Topical Care – helping protect and reinforce skin through facials and appropriate skincare regimens 2. Internal Care – flooding the body with the building blocks of strong cells through healthy eating of nutrient rich foods and taking dietary supplements 3. Emotional Self-Care – focusing on you; relaxing, re-connecting with people and taking time out every day to take care of the most important person – you! I strive through my products and services to provide benefits to improve the overall health of every cell in the body through agents that rebuild and store cellular health. Hero product(s) Murad Perfecting Day Cream SPF 30 – loved by Nicole Scherzinger, Lisa Snowdon, Christine Bleakley and Emily Blunt. Fearne Cotton loves our Essential-C Cleanser. And I’d highly recommend our Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture and Exfoliating Blemish Gel. 3 steps to healthy skin Take an Inclusive approach to skincare (see brand philosophy) and remember the most important person in the world is – YOU! misconception that the body needs eight glasses of water a day. I challenge my patients to replace just one of those glasses with raw fruits and vegetables. Not only will they stay hydrated longer, they will get vital nutrients to help build stronger cells, resulting in a healthier, more resilient complexion. Reducing cell-damaging stress! Stress not only can cause you breakouts, it creates tiny holes in your cell membranes that lead to water leaking out of your cells, dehydrating your skin and causing fine lines, wrinkles, and a lacklustre skin tone Key anti-aging advice You are never too young or too old to start taking care of your skin! However it is important to note that we lose 1% of our collagen every year after the age of 20 so starting at an earlier age will help you keep your youthful looks longer. Exfoliate! Dull, lacklustre skin can make you look older than you really are. Dullness is usually a result of a build up of dead skin cells on your face. Exfoliation lifts the dulling film of dead skin from your skin to give you a fresh and more youthful looking complexion” Identify if you’re ageing genetically, environmentally or hormonally and treat your skin with products specific to your concerns. If your skin is thinner, prone to breakouts, sensitive/dry around the eyes and you’re approaching or going through menopause you’re probably experiencing Hormonal Ageing. This is when oestrogen levels decline. Look for ingredients in products like phytoestrogens, AHAs and Shea Butter to hydrate and stimulate cell renewal. Include more soy, wild yam and broccoli into your diet which are natural, plant-based estrogens. If you’re ageing similar to your parents, have medium to deep crow’s feet and can see visible signs of fine lines you’re most likely experiencing Genetic Ageing. This is something we’ll all go through eventually! Look for products that contain Hyaluronic Acid to reduce the appearance of fine lines
and Dried Plum Extract for a youthful glow. If you’re seeing pigmentation, a rougher, drier texture, dark circles around the eyes and have spent quite a lot of time in the sun you are most likely experiencing Environmental Ageing. This is often caused by excessive sun exposure, pollution, smoking, stress, poor diet and alcohol intake. Look for products with Vitamin C to brighten your complexion and help reduce pigmentation. Stress-proofing your skin in today’s fastpaced environment Stress damages your health at the cellular level. I focus on looking for natural ways to help people reduce stress by achieving psychological and social balance. Such natural stress reducers include relaxation services that are offered at spas, exercise, group social activities, support groups to nurture the psyche, maintaining connections with others, discovering and pursuing a passion such as painting or dancing and reducing isolation to promote a healthy sense of self. The stress inherent in an unbalanced life chronically over-stimulates the nervous system and causes an outpouring of adrenaline, cortisol and other stress-related hormones. This hormonal overload taxes all the body’s systems and can ravage the cells, leading to breakouts and lines and wrinkles. Beautiful skin is a reflection of health that encompasses a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Everything in the body is connected, so naturally, a sense of well-being and balance will reflect in your heath and your skin. Best beauty advice you’ve heard or been given One of my favourite pieces of advice is to smile! When you feel your best you will look your best. And to treat yourself like royalty! Diet/regime I say eat equal parts veggies and vegging out keep the doctor away! I also advise eating embryonic foods like eggs, nuts and seeds. These specific food types contain all the building blocks for life (a seed turns into a plant, right?) and will help your body form healthier, stronger cells that are more resistant to damage…and the signs of ageing. Also, as previously mentioned, I
recommend eating water-rich foods. Some of my favourites are: Cucumbers- Cucumbers are composed mostly of water – structured water – which will keep you feeling hydrated longer. But, they are nutritious too! Cucumbers are an excellent source of silica, a trace mineral that contributes to the strength of connective tissue, and the cucumber skin is a good source of Vitamins A, C and folic acid. Cucumbers are 96% water. Pomegranates- Pomegranates are a wonderful source of antioxidants, and may be the world’s most prolific source of polyphenols. The unique combination of elements in pomegranates increases the protective abilities of sunscreens (which can help prevent sun damage). Pomegranates are 82% water. Avocados- Avocados contain potassium, monosaturated fats and are very high in fibre. The mono-saturated fats in avocados contain oleic acid, which has been found to improve fat levels in the body and help control diabetes and cholesterol. Avocados are 82% water. Apricots and Mangos- Apricots and mangos contain high amounts of Vitamin A. Vitamin A normalizes the production and life cycle of skin cells. In skin with acne, there is an overproduction of cells in the stratum corneum, which is the outermost layer of the skin and is composed of biologically "dead" cells. These excess dead cells combine with sebum (the skin's own natural oil) to form comedones - the pore plugs that are the defining element of acne. Taken as a dietary supplement, Vitamin A helps to prevent overproduction of skin cells in the stratum corneum. Apricots are 86% water. Broccoli and Spinach- These green foods are a great source of Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), which is a potent fat-and-water-soluble antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Broccoli is 91% water while spinach is 92% water. Key to happiness Choosing happiness! I like to say, “The best is yet to come – you just have to let it enter!” The future of Murad I want to spread the Inclusive Health message even further around the world. Overall, I want to make the world a healthier, happier, and more beautiful place. EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2012

EE*: What was your inspiration for creating Ormonde Jayne? Linda: In creating Ormonde Jayne, my goal was to combine elements that I consider define true elegance: the quality of English craftsmanship, the art of French perfumery and the sensuality and natural harmony of the Orient. My aim is to be at the cutting edge of creativity, defying convention in the world of scent. EE*: What is your brand aesthetic? Linda: The style of Ormonde Jayne is unmistakable: intelligent design, clean lines, solid and functional, yet oozing sensuality and classical elegance. Our signature contrasting colours of vibrant mandarin and ebony underlines the classic yet contemporary feel to the brand by appealing to both men and women. EE*: What is your Involvement in sourcing and manufacturing your products? Linda: I’m both the sourcer and the manufacturer for Ormonde Jayne - I oversee every step, from the idea and the conception to the manufacture of my products. EE*: How should we choose a perfume out of the selection you produce? Should one have several different ones to suit a mood/time of day? Linda: Some people look for a signature fragrance; others like to wear a scent according to how they’re feeling, where they’re going or the time of the year.
Either way, take your time, ask for samples and advice from your entourage, children or a loved one as to what they like you to wear. You can also do a perfume portrait, which will help you to find your fragrance while testing your olfactory preferences. EE*: What’s next for Ormonde Jayne? Linda: For 2013, we want to open in Russia and the USA and we plan to work hard on a beautiful idea (secret for the moment)… EE*: Talk us through your daily routine … Linda: at 6.30am I wake up and start my day with 20 minutes of Pilates 6.50am: I get breakfast ready for my children 8.00am: School run 9.00am: Work time; I generally spend two days in the studio and laboratory, then I work the rest of the week in the Old Bond Street office on product development, marketing & PR and on the main events 6.00pm: Home to have dinner with the children, then children’s homework, piano lessons, bathtime and bedtime story 7.45pm: Double Gin&Tonic on the rocks looking out into the garden. EE*: You have travelled extensively... where is your favourite destination? Linda: Egypt, for all the things we can do; Toutankamon museum, pyramids, scuba diving and trips through the desert to visit monasteries. EE*: What is your personal favourite scent? Linda: Ormonde Woman
“The style of Ormonde Jayne is unmistakable: intelligent design, clean lines, solid and functional, yet oozing sensuality and classical elegance.”
EE*: What makes you most happy? Linda: Sunday lunch with all the family. EE*: What are your makeup/cosmetic essentials? Linda: A good foundation and coverage. A flawless finish in my holy grail of makeup. Furthermore, I take a warm scented bath every night before bed to make my skin soft, moisturized and delicately scented. My bedding always smells beautiful! EE*: What is your favourite book? Linda: The Great Gatsby by F. Hair care advice this season Cold weather is just as bad for your hair as the sun, so keep topped up with conditioning treatments, which can be done at the salon or at home. Jamie’s fail-safe products/tools I love curling wands as they are so easy to use at home and can create curls waves and volume. Heated rollers are also a must-have for fab party hair! My product must-have would be Freezing Spray Mega Hold NonAerosol from Matrix Haircare for firm, but a flexible, touchable finish. Is face shape irrelevant to hair styling? There is a lot of truth in how your face shape can determine what hairstyle suits you. For example, fringes are great for a long face or large forehead and round faces should avoid very round haircuts such as bobs, as this can make the face appear even wider. It’s definitely something we as hairdressers take into account every time we approach a hair cut. Food/supplements for healthy hair What you eat and drink affects your hair nails skin teeth everything! So always remember to eat healthily and keep hydrated! Multi vitimans are great to help this too! Hair thinning A healthy scalp equals healthy hair so when you’re looking after your hair, always remember your scalp needs some looking after too. It is important to keep your scalp cleansed and nourished to create a healthy base for the hair to go through. This can be done with scalp treatments and certain shampoos and conditioners are designed for this. Best way to maintain healthy hair/ stimulate hair growth Make sure you’re getting all the necessary daily vitamins that you need. An obvious one but keep your hair trimmed regularly. This will remove dead ends that will help the hair grow healthily! Use a deep conditioning treatment on your hair once a week too,
which will help to keep the hair nourished. Also, avoid changing hairdressers all the time. Stick with your hair stylist, so that they can monitor your hair over a period and give you relevant advice to help you create and maintain the healthiest head of hair possible. Most effective hair treatment right now We work with Matrix Haircare in Jamie Stevens Hair and there is an excellent hair treatment from their Exquisite Oil range called the Deep Replenishing Treatment. This is an in-salon hot oil ritual which leaves hair feeling nourishing and looking super shiny! A great one to replenish and repair your hair after the festive season! Which hair colouring technique is hot right now? It’s not necessarily a new technique but Balayage seems to be staying at the top of the colour trends this season. It is a great technique to create low maintenance subtle hue. This gives the effect that colour is smudged through the hair as opposed to strategically placed! Most admire … I most admire anyone who is hard working and successful but still remain humble and kind! Can’t live without … I couldn’t live without my fiancée Megan, either at home or at work! She is a senior stylist in my London salon and we make a good team.
late teens put paid to this dream and instead I decided to follow my family into hairdressing, as my parents owned a salon. Favourite hotel The Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane has to be the one as I have lots of fantastic memories there. This is where the British Hairdressing Awards are held every year, where I’ve won several awards and where I’ll be going in a couple of weeks to find out my fate – I am nominated for the London Hairdresser of the Year, Afro Hairdresser of the Year and Men’s Hairdresser of the Year Awards, as well as the big one, the British Hairdresser of the Year Award! Favourite Spa I love going to the spa at the Mandarin Oriental for regular massages when I get time, which is not often at the moment! Favourite restaurant I love La Petite Maison in central London, lovely place with great food and service. Favourite book I actually don’t have that much time to read as work takes up so much of my time, but I recently read the late Vidal Sassoon’s autobiography, which I found truly inspiring, he was an incredible man with an incredible life story as well as being THE hairdresser’s hairdresser!
Most memorable styling experience … It’s hard to pin down as I have had so many fantastic experiences, from winning awards to working on TV programmes including Gok Wan’s Fashion Fix, How to Look Good Naked, This Morning and the X Factor. However, working with Kylie was one of the most memorable! Childhood ambition … I always wanted to be a professional footballer and actually did go down this route. Located in a makeshift oasis out amidst the desert, this trendy organic eatery is perfect for both those who just want good, healthy food in cool surroundings and families with small children - there’s a very trendy crèche-like section where littluns can play to their hearts content between gobbling mouthfuls of the finest fluffy maple syrup and banana pancakes
Dinner: La Petite Maison
(http://www.lpmdubai.ae/; Reservations: 00 971 (0) 4439 0505)– better than its mother restaurant in Nice and London sister, the food is so good, the atmosphere so inviting and the crowd so swish, you’ll want to eat here every night. The tomato martini is a must
Shop: The Dubai Mall. OK so
it’s a mall, but with the world’s finest shops - Bottega Veneta, Prada, Chanel, Hermes etc etc - appearing one after the other in one never-ending walkway, with the added benefit of finding impossible-to-get-hold-of stock and, of course, air conditioning, what’s not to love
Pack: Decent sun factor and
a good book to while away the hours whilst you perfect that base tan

A little bit more …
LANDAA GIRAAVARU G
Landaa Giraavaru not only boasts one of the most scenic and breathtak marine biologists and specialists who work around the clock to preserve
The Marine Discovery Centre, which is located
discreetly at the main jetty of the island, is a great place for children and adults to learn about the local marine ecosystem. There are touch tanks, educational talks and interactive activities for children. We also encourage you to get involved in one of the local projects, such as the Maldivian Manta Ray Project or the Reefscapers Project. Be sure also to visit the resident turtles in the rehabilitation centre and follow their progress when they are finally let back out into the ocean.
132
EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2012
The Maldivian Manta Ray Project is run by
Senior Marine Biologist Guy Stevens with the support of Four Seasons and Save our Seas. Guy and his team have amassed the largest number of identified manta rays on record anywhere in the world. He can amazingly pick out individuals in the water by specific patterns on their underbellies. Guy will take you on last minute ‘Manta on Call’ snorkeling excursions to one of the renowned manta ray hotspots neighbouring the resort. Here you will be able to swim with as many as 100 manta rays as they glide gracefully through the water feeding through their enormous mouths. Pioneering research conducted by Guy and his team have helped establish the renowned manta ray feeding site of Hanifaru Bay as one of the core protected areas of the Baa Atoll. You can donate to this amazing cause at: http://saveourseas.com/donate
The Reefscapers Project is one of the most
successful coral propagation projects in the world. Having transplanted over 120,000 fragments of coral between 2005 and 2010 alone, it is hoped that the project’s ground-breaking clone selection research will one day lay the foundation for the worldwide use of coral frames to help protect reefs against global warming. EL ESTILO* invested in a reef and we encourage you to do the same – you will build it on the island and, after it is transplanted into the water, you will be able to watch it grow throughout your lifetime.
