elcome to the 6th issue! The last few months have been very busy, partly because of clients, the upcoming EPSOM FASHION WEEK, the photo shoot for this issue and I was also writing a book, entitled Skillism, which has now finally been published. Skillism refers to the highest form of skill, which is produced when TKS (talent, knowledge and strategy) is combined with DSP (desire, self-belief and persistence). By using the philosophy of skillism, I intend to make both EL ESTILO* and EPSOM FASHION WEEK a big hit! Will they become famous, profitable and sustainable? If the advice in the book is correct then of course! Hope you enjoy this issue and look out for the editorial on Gucci and Chanel written by Olivia Burton, EL ESTILO’s Deputy Editor. M

oska accessories & gifts for the home is a new online boutique that Lisa-Marie Mosca set up in June 2011. The main aim of her business is to bring attention to designers who have a “Handmade in Britain” stamp on their work. She was very much inspired in a recent budget statement that chancellor George Osbourne mentioned “we want the words: “Made in Britain, Created in Britain, Designed in Britain” to drive our nation forward; a Britain carried aloft by the march of the makers” Back in 2010 when Lisa-Marie was buying for her own home she discovered that the high street had become very much the same in every shop you went into and after spending hours researching into pieces she soon came to realise that there was a wealth of talent from all over Great Britain that had not been exposed yet! This got her thinking into whether she could turn an idea into a reality. Lisa-Marie said she had always been very hands on person through the whole of her university degree getting involved and networking in as many events as possible and raising money where she could, so the thought of starting a business, networking and helping other people seemed like a dream come true to her. Lisa-Marie wanted to create an online retail business that not only exposed this fantastic and unique talent people had in the home accessories and gift industry but also to give small designers a lift into selling in a professional environment. She thought back to when she graduated and felt so venerable and helpless into the fact after spending thousands of pounds on her final collection she had never really received any help or advice into how she could sell it or even get her collection out there or noticed or let alone move it into a small business.

Her Business idea just didn’t stop there either, this sparked a further idea and she thought why not help new designers getting ready to graduate from university, or people re discovering a talent looking to start a small creative business and give them a platform to sell their collections on, in a professional manner. Lisa-Marie hopes to achieve this by running Creative workshops throughout Universities which would give designers an insight and process in what would be involved into setting up their business and how Moska can do it for them without the huge cost implications. Moska will also offer selected graduate and trend forecasting packages which will either help new designers looking to completely set up their brand and business to designers that want to keep their products current and fresh within the market place to the palettes that suit that season. Lisa-Marie continued to work in the city as an MDA in a fashion house throughout 2010 and into 2011 until she had built up the funds to make a transitional leap from full time employment to setting up a business and becoming self-employed. Running her business from her Surrey home she is always on the hunt for new designers that have charming high quality products but at a reasonable price as well as being beautiful and exclusive. She is also passionate about every item that she sells on the website and always wants to share them with the rest of the world.

“She discovered that the high street had become very much the same in every shop”

every person needs the help and support to make it in life and that is what I strongly believe the business will do and support and grow the talent and creativity Britain has to offer!” If you are designer and interested in selling through Moska or are a recent graduate or small business and would like more information on one of our packages then please email Lisa-Marie on Lisamariemosca@moska.co.uk or call 01883 500 117 between office hours, Monday to Friday on 01883 500 117. LisaMarie provides a one to one service with all designers/suppliers and customers she meets and tries to give precise and supportive feedback and answers.

We caught up with Lisa-Marie last week to talk about her new venture and business and asked her what she most loves about being her own boss now and running her own business and she said “the idea of being able to make a difference as much as I can to a person’s life and help other people succeed is what gives me the drive and motivation to get up and run my business every day. T

he Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane has reopened after a multi-million pound rebuilding programme that has seen it set a new benchmark in sophistication and perfectly crafted quality. ReardonSmith were the lead architects with responsibility for architectural planning and design, interior design detailing and on-site design compliance. The project on-site took 28 months and was the first time that the building had been entirely stripped back to its structure since construction some 40 years ago - a task that had become necessary to facilitate a major up-grading of all services, but which also enabled the re-planning of virtually every part of the hotel. Starting with a detailed design brief, ReardonSmith’s project embraced every part of the building, front and back-of-house, and included a two-storey glazed extension to the North elevation, newly modelled garden suites with conservatories, a new lift core and new kitchens. The interior design concepts for all front-of-house areas were by Pierre-Yves Rochon with the exception of the 10th floor rooftop extension which was designed by Eric Parry Architects and accommodates an ultra luxurious spa with separate areas for men and women, and a fitness suite and lounge alongside. “Working in collaboration with highly professional and proactive client representatives, our objective was to

hand over a hotel that enshrined the exceptional brand values of Four Seasons in every detail and increase the asset value of the building,” says James Twomey, ReardonSmith’s Associate Director in charge of the project. “This in my opinion was achieved through precise re-planning of the interiors on all floors of the hotel and by adding appropriate architectural interventions to the building’s existing envelope. The rebuilt hotel with its newly defined architectural form, chic interiors and enhanced spaces, in particular to the principle public areas, has a far greater sense of place and belonging to its location in this exclusive enclave of London”.

“Our objective was to hand over a hotel that enshrined the exceptional brand values of Four Seasons in every detail”

At ground level, the porte-cochère has been treated to an elegant facelift with a new polished black granite facia and graceful new lighting including a constellation fibre optic panel soffit. Inside, the floor has been opened up to allow glimpses of the atrium and of Amaranto lounge, bar and restaurant through to the newly landscaped garden beyond. The entire area works as one with its predominating dark French marble, classic timbers and rich red upholsteries but it has also been planned to provide areas of intimacy and to offer a range of experiences. Oversize pocket doors glide in and out of the walls transforming spaces and revealing themselves as magnificent artworks or elegantly mirrored partitions that capture reflections of the working fireplaces. RITZ-CARLTON SPA Hong Kong, China

BA London has completed the interior design of The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA, located in the International Commerce Centre (ICC) – the tallest building in Hong Kong and the fourth tallest in the world. The Ritz-Carlton occupies the uppermost 15 levels of the 118-floor building, qualifying it as the world’s highest hotel. HBA London’s design of the spa on the 116th and 118th floors has made the ESPA a focal point of the city’s skyline and a jewelled urban escape atop Hong Kong’s crown of lights. Those who stay at The Ritz-Carlton or indulge in the over 900 m2 ESPA have the unique opportunity to view the sweeping panorama of the city from its highest vantage point, including the aweinspiring vistas of Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong Island and the New Territories. “The spa’s height provided the inspiration for our design concept,” says Inge Moore, Principal of HBA London. “To craft a sanctuary of softness from the stressful surroundings of the city, we chose to create a spa cocooned and protected in the clouds. The silkworm’s cocoon is a soft, white pillow of finely spun silk

18

making it an ideal metaphor for the spa – a place of peaceful, protected transformation.” The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA is more than 300 metres above the frenetic streets of Hong Kong, allowing guests to simultaneously feel attached to the city with its breathtaking views yet totally insulated from the hustle and bustle below. To enhance the sense of being “cocooned amongst the clouds”, the spaceplan has been designed to have no sharp corners; walls are curved as if providing a protective embrace. Upon entering, guests are greeted by soft forms and natural finishes. Overhead, a floating art installation is suspended from the ceiling; developed with artist Eva Menz, strands of “butterfly cocoons” delicately fashioned from porcelain introduce a calming connotation of renewal. The walls are clad with finely textured horsehair, while the bronze metal-infused timber of the floor’s perimeter contrasts with the central reception area’s cool ivory stone tiles. Plush seating and the curved alabaster reception desk, backlit to cast an ethereal

glow, reinforce the feeling of being comfortably enveloped. The treatment rooms are located on the 116th floor and provide floor-to-ceiling fenestration framing spectacular views of the cityscape. Suspended like streams of ribbons against the glass, gracefully twisted strips of ivory coloured metal act as screens and create a playful dialogue between light beams and shadows within the sinuous lines of the treatment room. A glass lighting pendant shaped like a raindrop glistens in contrast to the textured horsehair and brushed bronze wall treatments. Sliding doors hide the room’s amenities, resulting in a clean and tranquil style. A bronze feature wall and an internallylit alabaster check-in desk create a dramatically luxurious backdrop to the private VIP reception area. The lavish spa suites feature a sparkling grigio marbleclad jacuzzi bath with scenic views over Hong Kong and a serene alcove with window benches upholstered in rich cream coloured fabrics. Two areas with treatment beds can be joined together or divided into independent spaces.

reative agency 7Gods has just completed the branding, interior design and project management of Greenleaf, the latest gem in London’s entertainment scene. With a creative balance of yin and yang energies, the practice has renovated two levels of an existing site into a contemporary Chinese restaurant and two karaoke bars that include a number of items 7Gods created and made especially for the venue. The innovatively designed 30-seat restaurant is on the ground floor. With a subtle nod to “yang” energies traditionally represented by the colour white, its cool palette allows the flavourful ingredients of the Asian cuisine to appear even more vibrant. Smoky grey “Ghost” chairs from Philippe Starck, deep-buttoned fawn leather banquettes, Carrera marble tables, limestone floors and glossy white wall glazing – some of which doubles as operable cabinetry - are used alongside bespoke décor crafted by the design team. A clever wallcovering system of circles cut from taupe toned felt provides a stylishly retro vibe as well as sound absorption. 7Gods also created bespoke pendant lights for the restaurant. Made from loops of white webbing, the fixtures above the dining tables are stationary, where as those

in the front window are fashioned from motorised, laser-cut loops of PVC which open and close like “blossoming” lotus flowers. 7Gods has plans to take these into production and create an iPhone app for controlling their movement. The entrance to the toilets makes an imaginative use of spare change where walls clad with 16,000 pence coins. As a result, the total installation costs came in at under a meagre £30 per sq. metre. Similar in style to those in the restaurant, a pendant light made from black webbing illuminates the varied shades of copper. Downstairs in Greenleaf’s karaoke space, high-gloss lacquers and deep jewel-tones shape its “yin” energies – traditionally associated with the colour black. At the intimate and dramatically styled reception area, LED and MR16 spotlights have been inset into the soffits and toe kicks of the walls, and the black granite-topped bar emanate an ethereal glow which makes the gleaming surfaces appear to float. Deep-buttoned banquettes covered with iridescent upholstery wrap around each of the two karaoke rooms and are backlit to create a theatrical effect. Vividly striped padded velvet walls contribute drama and aid the acoustics for the state-of-the-art karaoke system featuring 42” monitors.

P

orto Montenegro, the glamorous new marina destination designed by ReardonSmith Architects, has welcomed its first residents and visitors. Described as a “transformational” development for Montenegro, the phase currently completed includes waterfront apartments and luxury residences, restaurants, cafés and first class berthing and associated marina facilities for superyachts and smaller craft.

26

EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2011

ReardonSmith was appointed in 2007 to masterplan, design and realise not only a premier destination for superyachts in Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor, but a small town that would attract land-based holiday makers and local people. Equally, the town was to be a practical location for crews to make their home when not at sea. Since then, the Bay has been transformed from the site of a decommissioned naval base to the beginnings of a world-class destination on the Adriatic coast. “Porto Montenegro is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious and significant projects on which we have had the privilege to work,” says Patrick Reardon, executive chairman of ReardonSmith. “It has certainly provided a unique platform for us to demonstrate our abilities on a broad scale and it is hugely rewarding to see the early fruits of everyone’s hard work being hailed as the new Monaco!”

The masterplan concept for Porto Montenegro combines the massing elements typical of historic towns in the region with the principles identified by the 20th Century urban planner, Kevin Lynch of “imagability”. Consequently, the design is respectful of location and architectural inheritance but is also entirely new; it contains familiar spatial relationships that will help visitors to instinctively navigate their way through the town and it holds intentional surprises to intensify the experience of discovery. Commenting on the opening of Porto Montenegro, the country’s Minister of Tourism, Predag Nenezic, says: “This is such an important project for us – indeed, for all stakeholders in Montenegro’s tourism and the rest of the Mediterranean as well. I have no doubt at all that Porto Montenegro will become the, Jewel in Montenegro’s crown!”

“It is hugely rewarding to see the early fruits of everyone’s hard work being hailed as the new Monaco!” Work has already begun on the next phases of development. These are likely to include luxury hotels, several high-end residential developments, a landscaped quayside with cafés, restaurants and retail, an art gallery, additional marina facilities, a nautical museum, a large public lido and the addition of further berths bringing the total to approximately 650, about a quarter of which will be for superyachts.

Before the photo shoot for Epsom Fashion Week could take place we needed to find models from Epsom. Adam Steer reports

W

e have all heard of London fashion week, the glitz and the glamour, extravagant models and cutting edge clothing design. A showcase of innovation, concept and pure expression with aims of changing the way we wear our clothes and breaking endless boundaries of how we plan on designing them in the future. Previously we gathered our thoughts and ideas to produce Wimbledon Fashion Week which turned out to be a great success. We now bring you Epsom Fashion Week, a brand new platform based around the work and skills provided by UCA Epsom students, University for the Creative Arts. Monday 21st November, an exciting day for students as well as ourselves as we hosted the much awaited model casting. The event was in place to help us evaluate the experiences of students and potential Epsom Fashion Week models. In addition we were also scouting the exceptional

quality of interviewees for the face and spearhead of the campaign, as well as looking for the cover model for the next issue of El Estilo. Hopefuls attended the casting in force as a queue stretched past the main entrance and round the side of Epsom’s Playhouse theatre. Students involved participated in a professional casting process which was designed to help El Estilo select the quality of personnel needed to take Epsom to new fashionable heights.

“The up and coming models we interviewed all seemed incredibly focused and passionate about their futures”

The up and coming models we interviewed all seemed incredibly focused and passionate about their futures. From event planners to catwalk queens, magazine editors to stateside designers. Many of the students told us that the town of Epsom simply doesn’t have any fashionable events to get involved with. So many talented and inspired people living in such a small place could mean that Epsom Fashion Week will not only be a good event, but a great event. EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2011

Captain Duran reveals all to Adam Steer

S

amanah Duran first emerged as an icon in the public eye 6 years ago after winning a competition hosted by Ms. Magazine. Since then Samanah has travelled far and wide with various agencies working incredibly hard to earn the status she now holds within the modelling industry. In addition, Ms. Duran is now switching her focus towards presenting and has recently embarked on some life changing ventures that most of us could only dream of. An incentive of what hard work and determination can transpose into, we had the pleasure of working with Samanah on a photo shoot and later had a chat with her about future ambitions and past achievements. In her younger years, Samanah aspired to be a singer. The ambition to be a star bathed in limelight was apparent from a very early age. As we all know, networking is a very important element of most industries in this world and Samanah managed to get her claws into the modelling industry off the back of success from competitions aged 15. The star in the making was soon to be approached by agencies across London and her career kick started with pure desire. “When you get given one opportunity… that’s great, when you get given more opportunities - even better. But if you’re not focusing on that one thing at one time and

your trying to take everything in… that’s what makes you fall.” Samanah Duran has worked with various nationally spread magazines and most recently had the opportunity to present the outrageously cool ModBall rally in the states. An event stretching from San Fransisco to Las Vegas via some of the US’s most breathtaking sights. Flash cars, gorgeous people and a general high speed adventure through 6 extravagant locations. A once in a lifetime opportunity, Samanah has been called back to do it all over again next year. “I was on the plane to LA, casually walked on, sat down and realised Holly Valance and her manager were sat next to me. I took my jacket off not realising I had a sticker on my back someone had put on in the airport. I must have looked so silly!” There are some great things on the horizon for Samanah, towards the end of December she will be filling a presenter position for a SKY gaming channel and is cultivating relationships with executives from Channel 4 and MTV.

“Towards the end of December she will be filling a presenter position for a SKY gaming channel”

Rally 2012 planned she also hopes to break into other state-side niche’s and further her exposure through presenting, modelling and potentially acting in the very near future. “You just have to be yourself. No more, no less.”

“My life right now is purely work, that’s just how it is – if you want to be successful, you need to put 101% in to everything you do.” It’s clear to see how the future could shape up very nicely for Ms. Duran. With ModBall EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2011

Adam Steer meets the magical fashion designer from Italy

E

xquisite design based purely on individualism, exotic material choices with a luxurious image. These are just a few signature traits of Italian fashion designer Nico Didonna. Just off prestigious Oxford Street in central London lies a crystal clad boutique packed with one-of-a kind material artworks. Nico Didonna came to England to study at the world famous London College of Fashion 12 years ago and since his heart has never left the streets of the English capital. Understanding that there was very little individualism at the core of high-street fashion, Nico began drawing inspiration from the masses of people around him in the metropolitan world. Influenced by the general public, their individual ways of life, city living and endless subcultures, Nico Didonna began reworking his interpretation into design and opened his flagship store on Poland Street. We had the opportunity to go and meet Nico Didonna in person and visit his city central design pad to have a talk about future plans and past experiences. “We were involved in the 3rd harry potter movie, I designed and made Ron Weasley’s wedding suite in one scene. That was quite exciting, we also dressed up his father, the two twins and quite a few others.”

Some of Nico’s works have been shown in publications world-wide. As a brand they are establishing themselves as experienced participants in prestigious events such as London Fashion Week where they will be returning for their second season next year. When asking Nico Didonna where he saw his brand advancing in 5 years time he simply added “If I knew that, they would call me God”. In the next 12 months or so plans for this one off design specialist include expansion with more stunning boutiques and oversees custom with Nico Didonna stores being opened in other European fashion hotspots.

“We were involved in the 3rd harry potter movie, I designed and made Ron Weasley’s wedding suite in one scene”

“It’s all about individuality, it’s about Identities, dressing up, showing off how you are inside. How you think, the things that you do…. You can tell a lot from how a person dresses and that’s what I do. It’s so important for me to capture these vibes and translate them with the garments.” They also provide a bespoke service for customers to personally visit Nico Didonna in London and design a totally customised item of clothing in store. Pieces created will only be crafted using the finest materials such as Alpaca wool, Egyptian cotton, fine silks and cashmere. “Keep on believing in what you do. If you don’t believe it yourself, then nobody will” “Nothing is easy, Go the extra mile.” EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2011

Charcoal CHANEL chic Karl’s a/w 2011 vision for CHANEL was grey and stormy, his models appeared disheveled and waxen with only a strange, and alluring, glint of preciosity. Strudy black biker boots were teemed with soft lambskin legwarmers and woolen leggings. Shredded chiffons were finished with delicately-cut puff bell epaulettes. The signature Chanel boucle jacket was cropped and worn over a masculine, slash-fronted tuxedo. Wafer-fine lace was sheathed over satin and the black and grey palette was sprinkled with tiny sparkling sequins and patches of soft fur. The attitude is that of an apocalypse survivor, one who was once an innocent but has seen too much. There is a laissefaire look to the slouchy jackets, low-slung pockets and cropped turn-up trousers, whilst floor length capes and leather elbow gloves embued the look with a warrioresque air. Hair is either side-swept and loosely pinned, or pixi-cropped in Abbey Lee Kerhsaw-esque ash blonde or oil slick black, as worn by Stella Tennant. Jewels are oversize and rustic with a kryptonite edge. Makeup is kept pale and natural with broody kohl eyes.

“This is not a look for the faint-hearted” Flamboyant GUCCI Glamour Hark the 1970’s Holywood bombshell – Frida’s a/w 2011 collection was a call to arms for all things rich, feline and feminine. Her palette was luxuriously jewelescent: all emerald chiffons, eye-popping purple furs, scarlet dresses and varying shades of Bordeaux …an inebriation for the eye. Materials and accessories screamed money, from prim fedoras, fox furs and feathers to python jackets, leather dresses and thigh-high boots. This is not a look for the faint-hearted. The a/w Gucci lady is an image of womanly perfection with just enough seventies razzmatazz to imbue her look with a playful luxe-bohemia. Frida’s evening gowns were worn slashed to the thigh and gaping to the navel with oversized ruched halters. This was wowfactor to the max. Waists were fastened with skinny snakeskin belts, vast swathes of chiffon were tied in bows at the neck and naked ankles were set off by sky-high ankle strap platforms. Skin needs to be a matte porcelain, set off by a slick of deep red, perfectly applied lip gloss. Eyes have a pale caramel gleam and spidery lashes are loaded with mascara. Hair needs to be smoothed into a glossy side parting and worn in a thick, bushy ponytail at the nape of the neck. EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2011

Olivia Burton speaks to Elemental Herbology founder Kristy Goodger

EE: What inspired you to launch your own brand? KG: Over the years I have worked with a large number of skincare and spa brands but found there was a bridging divide between the indulgence of natural lines and the results of high performance brands. I was inspired to create Elemental Herbology to bridge this divide by using bio-science alongside aroma-therapeutic plant oils to offer our customers products that are as equally effective as they are luxurious. EE: How do you see Elemental Herbology evolving as a brand? KG: Since we first launched in Space NK in 2008 we have rolled out in all 60 stores in the UK and we have also launched in 22 countries worldwide, including in some of the most exclusive retail and spa properties in the world. I’m incredibly proud of my amazing team of passionate and creative people who have helped make Elemental Herbology what it is today and I’m very excited about continuing to develop new products and spa treatments that our customers love. It’s extremely fulfilling and rewarding to receive feedback from our customers who say our products not only make their skin look amazing but also make them feel so pampered and indulged. EE: Elemental Herbology seems to be a unique brand in that it concentrates not only on the skin, but the effect of hormones and the mind also. How do you translate this into your products so that they work deeper than just the skin surface?

KG: Skincare needs to be adapted according to the changing seasons and the changing needs of your skin so we believe in having a wardrobe of products that you can rely on rather than using the same things day in and day out. Just as in the summer you crave salads and in the winter your crave soups, your skin’s needs are constantly changing. Elemental Herbology’s range of skincare is carefully formulated with the very finest natural ingredients to answer all of these needs. For example, in the summer months when excess shine and sebum may be a concern, we recommend using a lighter facial hydrator which helps control oiliness whilst also deeply hydrating the skin to leave it soft, comfortable and moisturised. Our Moisture Milk contains tea tree, rosemary and geranium oils which all help regulate and balance sebum as well as a cocktail of highly effective moisturising agents. The natural ingredients that go into making each and every one of our products all deliver such amazing results, which can be felt instantly! For example, two of my favourite are Kombuchka and Sacha Inchi Oil. Kombuchka is phenomenally effective at improving vitality and radiance in the skin and Sacha Inchi Oil is organic, comes from the Amazon Basin through a sustainable community project, has the highest essential fatty acid content in any plant oil, so what’s not to love about this oil! EE: What are your three top tips for great skin in the winter months? KG: In the winter, it’s important to boost your skin’s barrier function to minimise moisture loss and help bind moisture to

“Skincare needs to be adapted according to the changing seasons” the skin so you need a rich and nourishing hydrator full of anti-oxidants and powerful humectants. I’d also recommend you change to an oil-based cleansing balm which will gently dissolves dirt and impurities without stripping the skin. A balm cleanser will also nourish the skin with essential fatty acids that leave it feeling pampered and comfortable rather than dry and tight. Finally, winter skin can mean a dull and lack-lustre complexion so use an exfoliating or radiance peel such as our Facial Glow at least once per week to remove all dead skin cells and brighten up a winter complexion. EE: What is your desert island beauty product? KG: Without a doubt, that would be Cell Food! I really can’t get by without it. With balancing long working hours, family life with my baby and frequent flying, I find it’s the only thing that keeps my skin nourishing and replete. It instantly boosts radiance and I really see a difference when I don’t use it. EE: Who do you admire most in the beauty industry and why? KG: Anita Roddick is incredibly inspirational. She was an amazingly successful woman who really made us first question what we were putting on our skin and where the ingredients came from. EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2011

interview

Olivia Burton speaks to Gift Library founder Caroline Stanbury

What inspired you to launch GL? I’d built up many clients through my work as a stylist over ten to fifteen years, and was increasingly being asked to shop for wedding presents, birthday gifts etc. As a busy working mum myself, I realised that most people are short of time! So I set up Gift-Library.com where you can choose a gift from a selection online, have it beautifully wrapped with a bespoke message added and then have it delivered directly. What differentiates GL from other online retail sites? You can shop from a range of high-end gifts across multiple brands with a single shopping cart. You can shop from the comfort of your home, or wherever you are in the world and, with the help of our dedicated personal shopping team, you can be sure that you’ll receive quality and luxury from the product right down to the gift wrapping and the impeccable service. The convenience of simply falling into bed at the end of the day and shopping is an absolute joy. Gift-Library.com is a luxury for both giver and recipient. How easy have you found the transition from working 'in person' as a personal style consultant to now targeting an 'invisible' online audience? The principles are fundamentally the same. It’s all about knowing your customer, providing great product and excellent customer service – everyone likes to be treated as a VIP! How do you best stay up-to-date of new and upcoming brands and designers? Do you have a team who helps you to choose what to add to the site? I still work as a stylist alongside Gift-Library. com, so I’m frequently travelling and I’m at fashion week every season. For the site, everything is handpicked by me and a core team of expert buyers - Gift-Library.com

chairwoman Goga Ashkenazi, friend and fellow fashionista Tamara Beckwith, and British Vogue Fashion Features Editor Sarah Harris. We travel around the world visiting potential suppliers on regular buying trips to source new and unusual products to sell on the site, which has taken me everywhere from Paris, to the Middle East and Asia. People send me ideas all the time, even my friends, but everything on the site is picked by me, Goga, Tamara or Sarah only. Your work must necessitate travelling frequently to different cities...where are your top destinations, and where do you head first to upon arrival? I love going to St Tropez where I’ll often make a visit to Goga’s house– it’s the ultimate luxury destination. I also love Istanbul for great culture and food, and Marbella is always a favourite for a relaxing holiday with my family. In Paris I stay at the George V Four Seasons, which is always stunning, and when I do get back to London I have to make a visit to the Medi Spa in South Kensington for essential pampering. What is your personal style philosophy? I must admit I’m a bit of a fashion victim! I like to look classic and stylish in the day time – Jeans, a vest or pretty blouse and my leather jacket, teamed with a pair of towering YSL or Louboutins, or for chilled out days I love Elizabeth and James for effortless chic. For evening I like to look glamorous and stylish – Hervé Leger dresses are always a favourite when I’m out with the girls, or for more formal events I’ll opt for a bespoke piece from Ralph and Russo – total glamour. Do you see styling/personal shopping as ever becoming wholly online or do you consider the human contact to be essential to the role? I think online is perfect for a business like Gift-Library.com, and whilst we do offer a full personal shopping experience, I

“It’s all about knowing your customer, providing great product and excellent customer service – everyone likes to be treated as a VIP!”

think when it comes to styling being able to meet your client is an essential part of what you’re offering. But saying that, with the invention of skype and a whole host of interactive mediums on offer nowadays – who knows! Who are your favourite designers for A/W 2011 and what is currently on your 'wish list' ? There was so much I loved from the AW11 collections…in London Burberry’s outerwear was one of my highlights, Giles was really strong too – all fur and leather, and Jonathan Saunders prints were beautiful. In Paris Celine was stunning as always, as was Stella McCartney – such great shapes and chic silhouettes. Marc Jacobs stole the show for me in New York with his polka dot skirt suits, and I loved all the rich colour looks at Gucci and Emilio Pucci in Milan. Top of my fashion wishlist? Versace’s Pin Heeled Nappa Ankle Boots and Lanvin’s Wool Felt Cape. EL ESTILO* / WINTER 2011

Portman, this gentle lotion is praised for its natural, organic properties and ability to gentle soothe the skin EE* Hair Colour Tip for Winter Unless you are chanelling the peroxide blonde look this winter, hair colour should be kept natural. The Urban Retreat at Harrods* offers a bespoke balayage treatment, where highlights are scattered according to your skintone, natural hair colour and parting. Gone are the days of sitting for hours with a headful of bleached foils; balayage takes a fraction of the time, achieves a much ‘richer’ looking effect and is easier to maintain. Because the highlights are not done in precise uniform layout, as with foils, you are never left with a block root regrowth. This is the perfect way, therefore, to grow out your hair if you wish to return to your natural colour. EE* recommends seeing Delphine for the colour she’s unbeatable and Crystal for the Blowdry. A

s winter looms and the cold weather sets in so many people find reasons not to exercise. The key to keeping fit is to keep active, no matter what the season or the circumstance. WHO (World Health Organisation) describes obesity, as the "first non-infectious epidemic" and Christmas time can be one of the most dangerous seasons. Looking at the latest dietary plans, work out regimes and trendy keep fit classes, shedding winter weight does not have to be the chore that we all seem to imagine. El Estilo knows how to do things in style, and we will be looking at the fast and easy ways to keep trim, wearing the right gear and showing it off in the best places. Why do we work out? To be healthy To feel great To look our best In order to achieve these goals we must be on target as we train. Here’s what to do, how to do it… Tabata Training WHAT: Tabata training” or the “Tabata Protocol”, refers to a type of high intensity interval training. The idea is to perform a particular exercise (or exercises) at high intensity for 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest. This is repeated 8 times for a total training time of 4 minutes. Dr Tabata showed that short bursts of high intensity training had superior aerobic and anaerobic training effects compared to longer moderate intensity training. WHY: The training method is supported by scientific evidence to show that it is a superior training method compared to traditional cardiovascular training. The bonus is better results in just 4 minutes compared to 60 minutes of traditional cardio exercises. 74

RESULT: The result of this is that the metabolic effect of exercising at highintensity can continue long after training, resulting in more calories being burnt over all! http://tabataexercise.com/abouttabata-training/ The Dukan Method WHAT: The Dukan method creates a healthy eating plan, returning to the basic nutrients, which founded the human species. Found by hunter-gatherers and eaten by the primitive man, proteins and vegetables are the focus. The plan includes 100 foods, 72 from the animal world and 28 from the plant world. WHY: Pierre Dukan doesn’t not only focus on getting us to our target weight but also maintaining it. This is a far more sustainable method than numerous other low carb diets as it is sustainable retraining

your body to run of more efficient nutrients. RESULT: The reasons this diet has become so popular is because its only demand on quantity is "AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE". A diet is not a short term fix it’s a lifestyle change. Dukan uses natural eating to counteract poor cultural dietary habits, creating a better you for longer, more than that, for ever: http://www.dukandiet.co.uk/en/336dukan-coaching/the-dukan-method.html Zumba WHAT: Zumba (which is Spanish slang for "buzz like a bee") was created by Alberto "Beto" Perez. He launched the technique in his native Colombia in 1986, and its success grew after he moved to Bogota and later to Miami. WHO: Zumba is safe for just about anyone since the steps can be modified to create a low-impact workout. All teachers are

encouraged to keep choreography simple, so students can drop their inhibitions and "feel" the music, which fans say is a critical part of the fun of the style. UP AND COMING: The latest advances in the Zumba dance world include incorporating flamenco, hip hop, yoga, belly dancing, house music, African, Bollywood, capoeira, and Mexican dance moves to extend Zumba’s uniting range of ethnic inspirations. Look out for Batuka, a hot trend in Spain in recent years that offers a Latin-infused cardio workout with a Zen-like approach for the less frantic, more energizing approach to well being. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/ health-and-families/the-secret-to-fitnesscraze-zumbas-success-2350675.html WEAR? AVOID GIMMICKY EQUIPTMENT – instead, opt for safe, comfortable and effective attire. Protective, injury preventative clothing will give you the strength and longevity you need to achieve your longterm goals. Swap the time we invest in booking back or knee appointments for finding the correct footwear. When asked whether the injury was accident related, embarrassed and confused the answer is usually no. People rarely consider their footwear as an accident when this is usually their greatest fall. Walking in the wrong way creates an ugly list of problems including Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Inflammation, Posterior Tibialis Syndrome, Knee Pains, Stress Fractures, and worse of all black toenails!
