EIGHT HUNDRED JOBS are set to be created in Wigan after P o u n d l a n d announced plans to build a new multimillion pound distribution centre at South Lancs Industrial Estate in A s h t o n - i n Makerfield.

Poundland intends to service all its stores in the North West of England from the new centre.

The development, the biggest single jobs boost for Wigan since the borough council was founded in 1974, has been warmly welcomed by local government and business officials in the town. Deputy council leader Councillor David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for economy, said: “This is fantastic news for Wigan borough and shows why we are a major player in the creation of a Northern Powerhouse. “Wigan Council is very pro-

business and has worked closely with the developer DB Symmetry and Poundland to ensure that the plans come to fruition. “Major investments in Wigan are crucial to our local economy.”

Application

A planning application for the site has been lodged with the council, and if it gets the green light, the site will cover more than 30,000

square metres on the former land of Georgia Pacific on Lockett Road. The development will create a range of skilled jobs, both full-time and part-time, as well as apprenticeships. Wigan was picked by Poundland following the company’s analysis of three potential homes for the new depot in the north west. Councillor Molyneux added : “We beat some high quality competition to land this investment, and are delighted that Poundland have chosen Wigan. “Wigan is ideally located for business between Manchester and Liverpool and is at the heart of the motorway network. “Earlier this year we launched the Wigan

Works vision to create a place where people want to invest, live, work and visit. “This will be the largest single employment creating application we have dealt with since the authority was formed in 1974, and ranks alongside Heinz coming to Wigan in the 1950s.

Support

“Giving people in Wigan the opportunity to access good quality jobs is a top priority of the borough council. “We will also support young people through this development to access apprenticeships. “The icing on the cake is that there are more positive announcements to come on the local economy.”

Wigan’s Masons dig deep to help Wigan Hospice

MASONS from the Wigan and District Masonic Group have gifted a donation of £750 to Wigan and Leigh Hospice. Members from the 19 lodges and eight chapters in the Group raised the funds by holding charity collections at meetings.

Chris Reeman, Charity Steward for the Group, said: “We have supported the Hospice for many years now and this donation is additional to other fundraising individual lodges do throughout the year. “We regularly donate because it’s such a worthwhile cause and because the Masons are strong supporters of the Hospice movement nationwide.” Julie Dennis, Fundraising and Events Officer, said: “I’d like to thank the Wigan and District Masonic Group for their ongoing support and the significant contribution they have made to the Hospice over the years.” Our picture above shows (left to right) Group Secretary Stewart Blagg; Group Chairman Malcolm Taylor; Julie Dennis; Community Fundraiser for the Hospice, Christine Edwardson; Vice-Chairman Geoffrey Porter and Charity Steward Chris Reeman.

MP celebrates work of Citizens Advice

Y V O N N E Fovargue MP has thanked staff and at volunteers Wigan & Leigh Citizens Advice for

p r o v i d i n g constituents with the advice and support they need to solve their problems.

At an event in parliament Ms Fovargue met people from across the Citizens Advice service. As a former Chief Executive of St Helens Citizens Advice she understands the invaluable insight local Citizens Advice have about problems experienced by their constituents. Wigan & Leigh Citizens Advice provides free confidential and impartial advice to people face to face and over the telephone. There is also a national website providing advice online, over email and via a web chat from www.citizensadvice.org. uk Common issues reported to the local Citizens Advice include queries about benefits, debt problems, employment and housing. Nationally the Citizens

Advice service helps 2.5 million people a year with 6.2 million issues. Evidence from the charity shows Citizens Advice helps to solve two in three people’s problems. Where problems can’t be fully resolved Citizens Advice will work with relevant local and national organisations to help sort out systemic issues. Yvonne Fovargue MP said: “Wigan & Leigh Citizens Advice does a great job in helping people solve their problems, and developing the skills and confidence people need to help themselves. As the local MP, I’m keen to work closely with Citizens Advice to make sure people get access to the help they need and tackle any local issues together. “Volunteers are the bedrock of the Citizens Advice service. I’d like

to thank the people in Wigan and Leigh who give up their own time to help others and recognise their contribution to our local community.” Citizens Advice Chief Executive Gillian Guy said: “The right advice and support can transform lives. Local Citizens Advice solve the problems for two in three of our clients, and empower people to develop the skills and confidence they need to help themselves. “It’s really important that people are able to access free and impartial advice as and when they need it, whether face to face, over the phone or online. We’re pleased to work with MPs to help them solve their constituents’ problems and address local and national issues. Yvonne is pictured with Gillian Guy.

Online information for waste collection times

WIGAN BOROUGH is leading the way in putting digital services first by making bin calendars available only online.

2

Wiganers can access their bin calendars online at a time and place that suits them through the easy to use webpage: www.wigan.gov.uk/recycling. The current online calendars expire at the end of August. The next two year calendar will be available online from the first week of July. In order to use the service people just need to put in their postcode and house number to view their next bin collection days, including which colour bin has to go out. This means people have the flexibility to use their smartphone, tablet or computer to access the calendar and can download it on to their digital device. Councillor Kevin Anderson, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “As part of The Deal, Wigan Council is committed to increasing our use of digital services and encouraging residents to interact and access council information online. “Online usage is rocketing with recent statistics indicating more than 80% of adults in

the borough now have access to the internet. “Bin collection calendars have been available online to view and download via the council website for some time. “Now is the right time to move the bin calendars to a completely digital service and we are sure this service will increase in popularity.” For people not currently online, free internet access is available at venues across the borough including Life Centres and libraries. Councillor Anderson added: “We believe that most residents that do not have internet access would be able to ask a friend, relative, neighbour or carer to help them find out when their bins will be collected. “Furthermore, anyone is welcome to visit their local library or Life Centre where staff will be happy to help.” Earlier this year Wigan Council unveiled its Digital Strategy to increase access to the internet to residents not currently online. Free Get Online courses are available at venues across the borough to help make the most of the internet. To book a place call 01942 489009. Winstanley College hosts High School students

WIGAN high school students had a chance to hone their leadership and debating skills during a one day course at Winstanley College.

Around 50 Head and Deputy Head boys and girls from a variety of schools across the Wigan borough and beyond were led through a series of fun activities, learning about what makes a good leader, not just when in a powerful position but also in everyday life. They were also coached on how to use body language and persuasive argument to present a confident air. Working in teams, the aspiring leaders then had to develop arguments on a variety of issues such as global warming, lowering the voting age and tuition fees, before presenting back to the rest of the group. The ‘Aspiring Leaders’ course was presented by Charlie Tebbutt and Maria O’Connor, both former Winstanley students, who have gone on to complete degrees in Human Science and Theology and Religion respectively. Charlie has

since worked in Malaysia for the charity Outward Bound whilst Maria is studying for a PHD at King’s College London. Lucy Alexander, from Westleigh High School said: “I have picked up some really useful tips which will help me to be more confident when doing presentations. It’s also been nice to meet people from other schools and do activities that get everyone talking.” Mel Chadwick, Vice Principal at Winstanley,

said: “It was our pleasure to host such an impressive group of young people. At Winstanley it is important that our students feel they can speak up and that they’re listened to that’s why we want to encourage school student leaders to start early in being a voice for their peers. Congratulations to all who participated; they were a credit to their schools.” Our picture shows students and Winstanley Staff at the leadership skills.

encourage more personal responsibility. “We’ll be taking The Deal to every area of the borough and Orrell will be the fifth area to take part. We’ve already seen some great successes from the areas that have seen The Deal in Action and I know this will continue across the whole borough.” More details about the events in Orrell and venues will be available on social media and in the local media over the coming weeks.

Gardener retires on 65th birthday

A WIGAN gardener has dug his last flower bed for the borough and retired after nearly 50 blooming good years in the business.

Keith Eatock went straight into the business from school in 1965 and has now retired from Wigan Council on his 65th birthday half a century on. He said: “I’ve enjoyed all my work and with my mates around me – I’d do it all over again with this great lot if I could. As for my retirement, my wife’s already sorted a list of jobs for me to do but I want to do some canoeing, angling and fishing – things like that. I wasn’t sure before but now that it’s here I’m looking forward to it. “I’ve also got grandkids so I’m sure I’ll be taking them to school, although hopefully not babysitting all the time! “Thank you very much to everyone for

This is the longest service time of anyone in the council so it’s really an achievement. If you add in the time his brother has worked for us too they have nearly 80 years between them which is a fantastic contribution to the borough. “Keith is an absolute credit to us and will be sorely missed. I’d love it if Keith would come and help us with the Deal in Action and do some gardening in the community - certainly, he’ll be welcomed back any time.” Amongst the many compliments from his colleagues, operations manager Ian Sayer said: “If the workforce was made up of all Keiths we wouldn’t go far wrong.” Our picture shows Donna Hall congratulating Keith, looked on by his colleagues.

Standish Voice sign up to The Deal

advertise in full colour at NO extra cost - call 01257

STANDISH Voice has become the latest group to sign up to The Deal, which calls on the community to play their part in taking pride in Wigan Borough.

Roundabout re-painted

The residents group was officially designated a neighbourhood forum earlier this year by Wigan Council

LABOUR Community Activist Debbie Parkinson of Standish reported the mini roundabout at Preston Road/Pepper Lane following many near misses. Debbie said: "After witnessing drivers ignoring the mini roundabout and a few near misses due to the road markings being almost invisible, I reported the junction problems to Wigan Council. After inspection it was agreed that the markings needed renewing and these have now been done’". Our picture shows Debbie at the newly painted roundabout.

And now Standish Voice, which has 250 members across Standish, has signed up to The Deal which encourages communities to get involved. As part of The Deal residents are urged to not just recycle more and go online but also to volunteer to help out, whether that is through community groups like Standish Voice or local sports clubs or charities. Also the campaign urges people to have their say on issues that matter to them. This links in with the work being done by the neighbourhood forum which is taking residents opinions in a six-week consultation. The four-page survey can be filled in by anyone who lives or works in Standish and is aged 11 or above and takes in all aspects of life in Standish including transport, traffic, housing, shopping to what residents want Standish to be called – a village, town or township. It will then help form a Neighbourhood Plan for the

400026

village which will help to create policies which will affect Standish for up to 15 years. The feedback will also help shape how investment from housing developers building in Standish will be used to support the village. Councillor David Molyneux, Deputy Leader of Wigan Council, said: “Our vision for The Deal is to bring communities together and encourage them to get engaged. We are delighted Standish Voice are backing our campaign and leading by example through their consultation to give Standish residents a real say on their community." Gill Foster, chair of Standish Voice, said: "This is the largest and most wide-ranging local public consultation ever carried out in Standish. "It will give people a say in how their community develops and help us find out what they want to change and what they want to preserve. "Our plan very much goes hand-in-hand with the aims of The Deal, with Wigan Council wanting communities to have more say, and take more responsibility, of what goes on in their areas. "We hope everyone in Standish finds time to give their views so we can implement their wants and needs in this time of unprecedented change in Standish." Ashfield inquiry date set 10

THE public inquiry into the village green application for Ashfield Park in Standish will take place in September.

The hearing, which will be open to all members of the public, will take place from Tuesday 1st September to Friday 4th September.

As far back as 2012, when the application was made, the council, as the local registration authority for village green applications, has to put in place arrangements to determine the application. It decided to hold a non-statutory public

inquiry to enable all parties to put their views and appointed an independent barrister with previous experience in village green applications to lead the inquiry. The independent barrister as inspector cannot make the final decision on the application but will make recommendations to Wigan Council, as the local registration authority, on whether to approve or refuse village green status. It was necessary agreed to defer the inquiry until the law in relation to a key element of the test for making a village green was clarified by the Supreme Court. That decision came in May 2014 and determined that when members of the public use council owned land designated as open space with the permission of the landowner it cannot be a village green. Now both the applicant and the council have agreed a date for the hearing to take place. Wigan Council has maintained its opposition to the village green application throughout and will make representations against the plans at the inquiry. Deputy Leader of Wigan Council Councillor David Molyneux said: “As residents will know we have on a number of occasions assured them that Ashfield Park is safe and will be for future generations – all without the need for this village green status. This campaign is unnecessary and is costing taxpayers money which could be put to much better use. If village green status is granted it could prevent investment in the park. “The council is proposing to protect the park against development through a key development plan called the Allocations Plan. Residents in Standish will be able to have their say in a public consultation and the plan could be amended to extend the historic park and garden designation, which currently applies to part of the park, to protect the whole park. The plan will then inform planning decisions up to 2026. “This would mean Ashfield is protected and can benefit from the £5m investment in community facilities and infrastructure from house builders in Standish.”

Rotary Dragons help groups

FROM support for a pre-school to help for both the physically and mentally disabled , ten local groups went away with a donation from the recent Wigan Rotary Clubs Dragons Den event.

Approaching twenty organizations applied and the three dragons, Rotary President Jim Rawson, former Westfield Children’s Centre manager Aujke Clegg ,OBE, and chartered accountant Peter Cheetham invited ten groups to pitch for a share of £4000.

Wigan Rotary President Jim Rawson said,’ It was a tremendous evening and Wigan Rotary Club was delighted to be able to help the wonderful work undertaken. In these hard economic times it is

surprising the difference a few hundred pounds can make. It was also humbling to see how many people are prepared to give up their time to help others.’ He continued ‘However this event would not be possible without the generous donations of the Wigan residents mainly last December when we accompanied Santa and his sleigh around the area. We hope this event shows we are using their donations wisely and for the benefit of the local community.’ A full list of the donations together with more information about the work of Wigan Rotary Club can found on their website be www.wiganrotaryclub.org.uk or ring 07813 471000 Our picture shows the lucky recipients withThe Dragons, front row left to right: Aujke Clegg OBE, President Jim Rawson, Peter Cheetham and back row a Representative from each successful group.

‘Freshbox’ Delivering the finest produce every week WINDY Arbour Farm Shop is a familyrun farm shop who are passionate about finest produce.

Based near Billinge between Wigan and St. Helens, their roots lie in providing the community with the finest fresh fruit and vegetables sourced both locally and from around the world, although these days they offer much more than that.

To Order call: 07432 013463

The shop celebrated its Ruby anniversary in 2014 but the Turner family has in fact been on the farm over 150 years. Having modernised the business and widened the product range vastly over the past 5/6 years, a delivery service was the next natural progression. They recognised that they had existing customers who couldn’t always come to the shop though they’d like to, customers who had come for years but perhaps no longer had transport, and obviously recognised the potential of taking the shop out to the wider public. Co-owner Geoff Rigby who runs the shop with wife Rachel and Mother-in-Law Pam said: “We didn’t want to be ‘just another veg box scheme’, a scheme sounds so rigid and boring. We sampled a few from the competition, and found them to be little more than not-so-fresh produce stuffed in boxes. We wanted to be different, that bit more special, personal, and really wow the customer. So we came up with the ‘Freshbox’ idea. “Firstly it’s a really good box! Designed by us with the help of a local firm and made from high grade card to protect the contents and keep the temperature down, it feels like a treat before you’ve even opened it. As for the contents, just like in our

shop, its only the freshest, finest produce from the local area and around the world. Rachel Rigby, whos father John Turner, along with his brother Peter first opened the shop in 1974 added: “We’re flexible, you can order exactly what you want, or give us a spend to play with and we’ll surprise you. We also offer an ‘Essentials’ box which is a great starter for new customers, packed with goodness and delivered for a nice simple £20. (pictured left) The team deliver every Friday, and there’s no need to wait in! The box will keep your order nice and fresh, and you can pay securely over the phone if you wish. Orders need to be placed by 8 p.m. Thursday night. “We’re really proud of what we’re offering, and delighted to have many of the Wigan Warriors & Widnes Vikings boys on board as customers. They’re busy lads and they love the convenience of getting everything picked, boxed, and delivered. The eggs they go through between them is unbelievable! Warriors & Wales star prop Ben Flower was the first player to order, Ben said: “We need a good diet to compliment all the training we do, and the produce at Windy Arbour is awesome, second to none! When Geoff offered to deliver to the training ground loads of the boys jumped at the opportunity and its great knowing it’s there for us each week with no hassle. My Dad even took a Freshbox back down to South Wales” To order a Freshbox call/text 07432 013463 or email freshbox@windy-arbour.co.uk postcodes covered are listed at www.windy-arbour.co.uk

Wigan Armed Forces Day is ‘the best yet’

ARMED FORCES Day in Wigan was hailed as the “biggest and best” yet as thousands lined the streets to salute serving members and veterans. An estimated 10,000 people attended the event held in Wigan town centre on Saturday. The people of Wigan Borough came together to wave Union Jacks and cheer on a military parade serving service men, women and veterans. The GrandArcade shopping centre said footfall was up 6.2% compared to Armed Forces Day last year – indicating the increasing levels of support for the armed forces in Wigan Borough. Armed Forces Day is held annually to raise awareness of the contribution made by those who serve - and have served - in our armed forces. The event in Wigan is one of the biggest in the North West and, as well as the parade, entertainment for all the family was provided including military vehicles on display, live entertainment, information stalls, face painting and Punch and Judy shows. Town centre businesses backed the event by offering discounts for veterans and their families. In attendance was Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Lieutenant Commander Kevin Heakin, Colonel F E Hewitt TD, Major P Valentine and Major G Miller alongside the Mayor of Wigan Borough Councillor Susan Loudon. The borough’s cadets were also out in force as was mayoral cadet Callum Mounfield. Cllr Paul Kenny, Wigan Council’s lead member for the armed forces, said: “I would like to thank everyone who attended Armed Forces Day in Wigan. It was a fabulous event and very well attended. “All through the day we received feedback from people telling us how much they enjoyed it and how much they appreciate the effort we go to in Wigan Borough on behalf of our armed forces. “People really did line the streets and show their support for everyone who serves. “It’s great that town centre businesses supported the event too and it’s hoped that this will be the

start of a Wigan Borough wide scheme working with businesses as part of the corporate covenant.” John Magee, vice-president of Wigan’s Royal British Legion branch, said: “It was a wonderful, successful day enjoyed immensely by the people of Wigan Borough.” John praised the number of services who attended on the day which were specifically targeted at veterans and in particular praised Wigan and Leigh College for offering free courses for veterans. The town centre parade was the culmination of a series of events across the borough last week to mark Armed Forces day. An estimated 22,000 veterans and their families currently live in Wigan Borough along with reservists and serving personnel. Earlier this year Wigan Council announced it is pledging £500,000 to create an armed forces hub to provide specialist support to serving armed forces members and veterans in the borough. The Royal British Legion has also launched a new outreach service for serving or former armed forces personnel based at the Life Centre in Wigan. The outreach point, which is open every Wednesday 10am – 12pm, can offer valuable information for armed forces members and veterans on anything from returning to civilian life to social care support. Wigan Council is supporting projects to commemorate the WW1 centenary and will once again be asking the community to bid for small grants in October for 2016 which incorporates the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. To find out more and to get an application form call 01942 489393 or e-mail: ONE OF the day’s big supporters in the local authority is

Wigan Central councillor George Davies, who told the Courier: “ Veterans Day over the years has been a great success, but this year it has become a massive event, and all of us on the council would like to thanks the armed forces themselves, and the local folk who supported the fantastic parade in Wigan on June 27th. Saturday was a great success under the leadership of the British Legion and the Army, Navy and Airforce regiments personell who filled our streets. “It was a colourful and moving experience for everyone who took part or lined the streets.” The Courier also caught up with the ladies of the Wigan Womens Fellowship which meets at Penson Street Community Centre, who were

proudly flying the flag in their regular meeting. Over at Wigan Infirmary, the Armed Forces Day flag was flying high, and our pictures shows Councillor Davies with members of the hospital staff and Reserve Forces members outside the Accident and Emergency Department on the Friday before Armed Forces Day. Councillor Davies, himself a proud member of the Royal British Legion, said: Armed Forces Day is always special and is growing in popularity all over the country. We salute our armed forces here in Wigan and I would like to thank the numerous Wigan community organisations, including schools, community groups and hospitals for showing such marvellous support for our service personnel.”

mother at a boys boarding school! She travelled in the Prince’s private jet, and also on his yatch – which was later bought by Donald Trump for over a billion GBP. She was chauffeur-driven, as women were not allowed to drive, but did not have to cover her face, only her head, with an Abaya. She had only one day and two evenings off each week, yet her social life was full with concerts, coffee mornings, visits to the library, hairdressers and manicurists, all organised by the British Embassy and the then BOAC. She was given spending money everytime she accompanied the family on trips to Orlando for a month, or on the yacht with guests who included Prince Albert of Monaco, and Michael Jackson. Heather felt lucky that she was with a family who looked after her so well, and with children she clearly became fond of, and she stayed for three years longer than she originally intended. Our third speaker was Margery Holt, who was the sister-in-law of Amy Holt, the well-loved female Police Officer who was a regular face in Wigan Town Centre in the 1960`s. Margery, who was a young Police Cadet in those years, regailed us with numerous hilarious anecdotes about her experiences. Margery was in the Police Force during what is referred to as the ‘heartbeat’ era. She had trained as a nurse, but felt it wasn’t for her so she left and, after several aborted

careers, found her true and successful vocation in the Police Force. At that time Police Officers in Wigan were among the tallest in the country. To illustrate the point she told us how, in Cheshire, the minimum height for women was 5ft 2ins, and for men 5ft 5ins; whereas in Wigan, for women it was 5ft 5ins and for men 5ft 11ins. There were 170 male officers in Wigan and only 8 women; and the women received 95% of the male officers’ pay rate because they did not do night duty. The women were equipped with uniforms that were miles too big for them, with secondhand jackets; and great-coats that, when wet, would make traffic ‘point’ duty nigh on impossible due to their wet weight making it almost impossible for them to lift their arms! Margery also made us laugh with her tales of drunks attempting to enter the Police Station via the revolving door, with Officers taking bets on which side of the door would they exit, and of the surprised look on the drunken invidual’s face as he emerged, still on the outside of the Police Station! Margery has given several talks, and all of them are hilarious, thanks to her clever delivery. We meet the first three Mondays of every month, and new members are most welcome. To find out more, telephone Janet on 01942 708959. Our picture shows speaker Heather Slater.

Successful year for Thistle Society

THE Thistle Society, Wigan recently held their AGM, when their President Margaret Rowe welcomed a good attendance of members.

Treasurer Neil Smith revealed an excellent financial statement outlining a healthy state for the future of the Society.

Secretary Kathleen Merchant reported a happy and progressive year with new members attracted to our programme of events and weekly dancing, especially to the Tuition Group where dance teacher Margaret Rowe encourages new members to join and enjoy the

Fiat 500’s Facelift

THE first talk last month was by Allan Clegg, author of ‘Where birds don`t Sing’. Allan, and his wife Elke, described the experiences of her parents when she was a baby, under the German Occupation of Holland during World War Two. Elke`s parents, who were Mennonites from Friesland, have a theology which emphasises the primary teachings of Jesus in the New Testament, as do the Amish.

Elke’s parents’ home was a ‘safe house’ used by Allied troops. As Mennonites are anti-violence, they had to use sabotage and non-violent means to fight the enemy. In WW1 Holland had been neutral, but the persecution of the Jews changed everything, and so the Resistance was born. The Allied troops hidden in their cellar consisted mostly of British air crew who were saved and helped back to the UK. Slim women would enter the house but `pregnant’ ones leave! The arms of windmills would be moved into certain positions to warn the Resistance of the whereabouts of German soldiers. In Late April 1945 Elke’s mother was unable to stop her from crying and she was heard by German soldiers. As they started to approach the house Elke’s mother almost fainted with fear but, suddenly, the soldiers looked up the road and lay down their weapons. When Elke’s mother ran to the window she saw a regiment of Canadian soldiers marching down the street. It was all over. Our second talk was by Heather Slater, who spoke to the Guild about her life as a nanny in Saudi Arabia, caring for the children of Prince Alwaleed bin Talel. It was in 1990 that Heather answered an advertisment in The Lady magazine. After several interviews (at the Dorchester Hotel in London and the George V in Paris, owned by the Prince) she was offered a 5 year contract, after learning to plait hair a skill not required as a house-

THIS IS the ‘new’ Fiat 500; but it’s not the allnew model you may have been hoping for. The retro city car gets a raft of styling, cabin and powertrain revisions for 2016, and goes on sale in September 2015 priced from £10,890. The reveal of the facelift comes at a significant time, as July 4 2015 is eight years to the day after the reborn 500 was first revealed, and exactly 58 years after the original Fiat ‘Cinquecento’was first shown to the public. This later-life refresh aims to breathe new life into the eightyear old 500 before it’s superseded by an all-new car on a new platform, although that’s unlikely to be for another couple of years. Fiat has pulled out all the stops for the facelift, claiming that no less than 1,800 changes have been made to help it compete with the likes of latest MINI hatch and the DS 3.

FIAT hasn’t messed with the resolutely retro formula too much, as exterior styling revisions are minimal. The main headlamps are redesigned with Xenon units an option, while the halogen daytime running lights are replaced with smarter LED items. A new dual-bar top grille also combines with a tweaked bumper and air intake. At the back there are new LED lamps with a ring

design, while the chrome bumper trim has been moved lower. Fiat has also extended the 500’s famously bold customisation options with a new bodywork wrapping option. Dubbed ‘Second Skin’, it allows buyers to cover their 500 in some especially vibrant patterns, including everything from military camouflage to tartan, with wrap options extending from simple belt-line graphics to full body coverings.

There’s also new alloy wheel designs and a wider variety of colour choices inside and out. INSIDE the changes are more noticeable, with a refreshed dashboard layout designed around a new fiveinch ‘Uconnect’ infotainment screen. On entry-level ‘Pop’ cars it’s a simple system with six-speakers and USB/AUX connection, but on top-spec Lounge models it comes with Bluetooth, DAB, satnav with TomTom’s Live connected traffic services and smartphone integration. Also, while Pop and midrange Pop Star spec retain traditional analogue dials, Lounge spec comes with a seven-inch TFT instrument screen that can provide information on driving modes and all the Uconnect functions. Elsewhere in the cabin, there are more upmarket materials and new upholstery options, while seven airbags are now standard across the range. ALL engines have now been tweaked to meet imminent Euro 6 regulations, with the 68bhp 1.2-litre and both versions of the TwinAir 0.9-litre petrols all available with start/stop. The TwinAir, available with 85 or 105bhp, offers CO2 emissions lower than 90g/km in both forms, while the former is capable of up to 74.3mpg combined. The 1.3-litre Multijet diesel will be available later on in the year and now offers CO2 emissions of 89g/km. Also coming later in the year will be an ‘Eco’ variant of the base 1.2-litre petrol, which sees a smart alternator, aerodynamic bodykit and low rolling resistance tyres fitted to push CO2 emissions under 99g/km. Fiat has also updated the ‘Dualogic’ robotised semiautomatic transmission, which now gets steering column shift paddles.

Caldwell’s savvy signings will be crucial

THE FANS’ forum a couple of weeks back was definitely an eye-opener for supporters of Wigan Athletic.

It was new chairman David Sharpe’s first proper opportunity to outline his vision for the club and he certainly wasn’t short of confidence! FOR A second summer Aspull club members and supporters have been hard at work making improvements to the fabric of the Woodshaw Park club. The weekend of June 26th

saw a taskforce at work on the changing rooms roof and interior, on the floodlights, which have been uprated to remote control, and some fairly extensive gardening on the two pitches and the

He revealed we’ll definitely have a 20-goala-season striker next season, before proclaiming “I don’t just want to win this league, I want to smash it and get 100 points”. It’s so refreshing to hear this belief after the past couple of massively disappointing seasons. Some people have pointed out that with a first-time manager and a rookie chairman, Sharpe’s statements are just a sign of his naivety. League One will undoubtedly be difficult but having the confidence we can smash it is definitely no bad thing. Having been brought up

Tired Wigan need a shot in the arm

WELL, YET another opportunity to examine the current plethora of rumours circulating the Wigan Warriors club must again go by the board as we are forced to try to assess another unexpected on-field calamity.

Children took part from Our Lady’s, Aspull Church, St. David’s, Canon Sharples and St. Mary’s & St. John’s. Last Thursday’s embarrassing 17-6 defeat to Warrington wouldn’t perhaps have been quite as painful if it hadn’t been inflicted by a team who’ve been very much second best to almost everyone else all season and on top of that were weakened by injuries, and in actual fact did nothing special except get off their line quickly and make their tackles – a fairly standard combination for professional Rugby League you’d have thought, except that in the face of it, Wigan, who as the weekend approached, were possibly looking to go top of the Super League table, were at complete sixes and sevens as a result. First of all, let’s dispense with some myths, shall we? In claiming beforehand that his team were underdogs, Tony Smith did NOT bamboozle the Warriors with astonishing, uber-clever mind-games. It was the bookies who pronounced Warrington the under-dogs, and even then it was a very doubtful claim. Wigan watchers have almost certainly reached the stage in 2015 where the Warriors are under-dogs whoever they play if it’s away from home. And despite the hyperbole of the Sky Sports commentators, Warrington were NOT running incredibly hot. They played a good solid game, the forwards getting onto the front foot early with some determined aggression, which made lots of opportunities for their pivots Gareth O’Brien and Brad Dwyer, neither of whom – on paper at least – would get close to first team selection at Wigan. It sounds churlish to say it, but this game was lost as much as it was won. Any team, no matter what their standard, would have benefitted from the hatful of unforced errors that Wigan, courtesy of the usual suspects I’m afraid, served up to them. The knock-ons alone are a big cause of concern to me. Either some players can’t catch a ball or they just can’t think quickly enough to play the kind of fast offloading game that Wigan are currently attempting. Either way, it all boils down to a basic lack of discipline and respect for possession, which has been a earmark of the season of far and an ongoing torment for the Cherry and White hordes. I’m also worried and totally baffled that the Wigan pack, who were the beasts of Super League last year, suddenly look so

Paul Finch is

The Insider

Wigan Warriors from the Inside Out...

ineffective. Where has all that fearsome go-forward gone to? Why do Wigan’s centres look to be getting through so much more work than their props? What is the point in having two never-say-die competitors like Mike McIlorum and John Bateman if the bigger men around them fold like chocolate soldiers under a blowtorch as soon as there’s a heavy impact? In the old days, the solution would have been to transfer-list players who simply weren’t performing. In the age of contracts it isn’t so simple, though of course you’d have to ask the question that, with the current wretched form the bulk of the Wigan pack are demonstrating, who would want to buy them anyway? The other fundamental problem for me is that Wigan’s game management is non-existent. The Warrington fixture was an excellent example. Wire gained constant advantage from dashing off the line and getting into Wigan’s faces. I can’t help thinking that someone like Shaun Edwards or Andy Gregory would have responded to this quickly and efficiently by kicking early in the tackle count and putting immediate doubt in the aggressive defenders’ minds, completely nullifying their main strategy. Shaun Edwards and Andy Gregory are now names from the distant past of course, but where are Wigan’s current on-field leaders? To be fair, Wigan did make some tactical adjustments during the game (even if SKY commentator Mike Stephenson didn’t notice them), but the crucial problems were not rectified, as they haven’t been so often when Wigan have been up against it during 2015. The result, in so many ways, was inevitable. Even Wire coach Smith made comments afterwards that Wigan were not at their best (which was putting it mildly, to say the least). Of course, some would say: “Come off it, mate. You’re just having a good moan. Look at where Wigan are in the league.” And that would certainly be true. At the time of this writing we’re still third in the table, only one point behind St Helens and five ahead of Warrington, who are still not even guaranteed to make the top eight. Though optimists shouldn’t get too carried away by this, as Castleford and Huddersfield are only one point behind us, in joint-fourth, and next weekend Wigan will entertain league-leaders Leeds, who will almost certainly want revenge for the mauling they got at Newcastle. (Not that Cas or the Giants will have it easy, the former travelling away to Hull, the latter facing Saints at Langtree Park). All that said, there was one bright note about last Thursday’s match - but even that is tainted a little.

What a great first-team debut for Warrington by former Shevington Sharks’ skipper Sam Wilde? He ran hard and with confidence all the time he was on the field, and didn’t look anything like his 19 years. Congratulations to the young fella. But the main question this poses for me is why, when Sam captained Shevington Sharks so successfully, is he not playing for Wigan?
