S

Weather Or Not, Here It Comes Spring always comes earlier in the southeast than in the most populous parts of the country. A look at today’s weather map still shows freezing temperatures in the northeast and upper midwest. So any daffodils there may be poking through the snow. That doesn’t mean it’s not coming. And seasonal inevitability should have you thinking about when you’re running 24 hours a day, dealing with a crew of old hands and new, covering the calls, emails and texts that are coming fast and furious as your regular customers run out. We’re so much like the farmer used to be. I say used to be, meaning before price supports for corn, soybeans, wheat, beef and lots of other foods you consume on a daily basis were implemented. For the last 50 or so years, farming has been more about spreadsheets and markets than about sticking your thumb in the air to check the weather. A successful farmer sits on a multimillion dollar piece of land, drives a tractor or combine that costs more than a Lamborghini, and has more revolving debt than a medium sized manufacturing company. Yet in the end, they’re bound by the behavior of the same fickle planet that you are. If it rains the entire first week of July, the farmer may be delighted. You, not so much. If the price supported farmer can’t get the yield he or she needed to make numbers, they may have a guaranteed financial structure that means they stay solvent. You can’t go to the banker and say, "Sorry! It was a bad summer. I won’t make my February through April payments." There’s no backstop for you. That’s why, even more than the same farmer, you have to be headsup about your finances. Not sure you’ll need an extra truck? Rent one for busy weeks, or buy a refrigerated trailer you can leave parked at an event. Trouble finding seasonal help? Dig deep, work the local colleges, offer three or four figure bonuses to your regular people who bring in an employee who stays until September 15. Studies say that recognition is the number one motivator of employees, so throw them a party. But give them their $500 or $1000 retention bonus at the party, in front of their peers. That’s double whammy recognition. All of you have different reasons for getting into the packaged ice business. One of them was the same reason we all get out of bed in the morning – putting food on the table. Most of you live in the most can-do country there is – name a great, life changing company that has popped up in England, Italy, Germany or Japan in the past 25 years. Companies continue to come to the U.S. that change people’s lives – most computer technology, cellphone, aviation, aerospace. We even invented the World Wide Web. In the real world, you don’t get paid for a good effort. Your banker won’t give you a participation trophy as he signs the papers to send your assets to a receivership auction. You’re going to get paid this summer for your plant’s efficiency, your ability to hold the line on pricing with your buyers, your employee’s motivation and dedication. The weather will come into play, but if you have the fundamentals in place, you can make it work regardless of weather. If you don’t, you may be in trouble no matter how hot it gets.

SPRING MAINTENANCE

MERCHANDISERS ARE NOT MAINTENANCE FREE

But they don’t need much Most of you have several hundred to several thousand merchandisers out on the street. They’re placed for retail visibility and convenience – not necessarily for your expensive machine’s efficient operation. The compressors used in merchandisers are nearly bulletproof, but they do require some attention. Most companies use their winter downtime and spring ramp-up as an opportunity to do some basic maintenance. The most basic of these tasks is one your mother would also recommend: Spring cleaning.

CLEARING AND WASHING

A large number of compressor failures can be attributed to dirty coils preventing efficient heat transfer, even in indoor installations. In fact, indoor installations can be dustier than outdoor. The very first thing you want to do is to clean the coils. Power down the unit by unplugging or even powering down the breaker. Remove any housing or grill around the compressor unit. If you’re outside, you can use a pressure washer to clear dirt, debris, and buildup from the fins of the condenser. Be very careful as the fins are fragile and do bend easily. Spray the power washer direct at the fins, if you hit them from the side they may bend. Don’t be worried if a few fins bend while washing, it can happen and you’ll fix those next. Indoors, you may have to be happy with a vacuum. This should remove most dust accumulation, but you may want to use a physical cleaner if it’s not freeing up. You can use a coil and condenser cleaning solution, but be careful as these cleaners are highly caustic. They should never be used in an enclosed space and you should always follow the directions exactly as listed. Once the condenser fins are completely clean, you’re ready to move to the next step.

STRAIGHTENING FINS

The last step is to straighten out the fins of the condenser. When the fins bend, it reduces the surface area available for air flow to move through the unit. Since maximizing airflow is essential to maintaining efficient heat exchange, it’s important to keep them straight. A condenser fin comb is fairly inexpensive. They come in a few different styles and sizes but the tool is roughly the same every time: a sturdy plastic comb where the tines fit between the fin blades on the condenser. To use it effectively, start at the bottom, with the handle facing upward and pull the straightener to the top of the condenser. Holding the comb this way ensures that the handle won’t prevent you from reaching the base of the condenser unit. Once you’ve straightened out the fins, restore cover or hood and the turn the power back on. Now your system is ready for use once again.

SPRING MAINTENANCE

Spring Truck & Trailer maintenance

After a brutal winter for some, we’re finally experiencing a real spring. This is the time to say thanks to our hard-working vehicles for their great performance this winter by giving them a maintenance overhaul. A spring checkup can help uncover winter damage but there may be some components that are more difficult to check without requiring a skilled technician to determine the problem.

BATTERIES, PLUGS & WIRES Whether your trucks are parked for winter or endure a winter full of cold-morning starts, you must check your battery, plugs and wires. All of these components give the spark to your vehicle and they work extra hard when it’s cold. Winter wear and tear can compromise their performance up to 60 percent. Test and replace weak or old batteries, plugs and wires, especially those more than three years old. It will certainly be cheaper than a tow and replacement down the road.

TIRE PRESSURE Cold weather can reduce tire pressure, so make sure all tires (including spares) are properly inflated and balanced. Improper tire pressure leads to premature wear and a decrease in fuel mileage.

BELTS & HOSES Inspect and replace worn or cracked belts, as well as hoses that are blistered, brittle or too soft. Belts and hoses older than five years, even if they look intact, might need to be replaced.

BRAKES After a season of snow and ice it is advisable to inspect the brake system, including lines, hoses, parking brake and brake fluid for proper level. These are one of the most used (and abused) components.

FLUID LEVELS There are lots of fluids to check but don’t skip over any of them: engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant and even windshield washer fluid. Dirty fluids and low fluids may affect the performance of your vehicle and can lead to breakdowns if not properly checked and filled.

ENGINE AIR FILTER Replacing a dirty air filter allows clean, unrestricted air flow into the engine and helps ensure proper performance and longer life.

WINDSHIELD WIPERS Spring showers and summer storms are upon us and properly functioning wiper blades increase visibility in these conditions.

SHOCKS & STRUTS These are vital to a smooth ride and could affect other parts in your vehicle

HEADLAMPS, TAIL LAMPS TURN SIGNALS & HAZARD LIGHTS Check that each are in working order and alignment to ensure safe driving, especially at nighttime or in rainy or foggy conditions.

SUSPENSION & WHEEL ALIGNMENT Deep potholes aren’t friendly to shocks and struts. An inspection to determine wear or leaks can alleviate bigger issues down the road. Also having your wheels aligned properly after a season of tough conditions can help keep you on the road in a safe direction.

Food Safety Modernization Act Industry Opinions For The Trump Era he 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is the first large scale revision of the Food & Drug Administration’s management of the food supply chain in decades. It’s a gigantic set of regulations that is attempting to adjust a food supply chain that runs in the Internet age to an FDA that’s sort of stuck in the 70s. It’s a laudable goal and will no doubt plug many necessary holes in the supply chain. Nevertheless, it has created a network of new regulations that are being implemented in stages, and no one in charge seems to be completely sure what the next step is. Packaged ice plants will at some point be subject to compliance, but it’s not likely for the current year.

President and CEO Dr. David Acheson shared insight on what he thinks 2017 will bring the food & beverage industry in regards to the Food Safety Modernization Act. Jill: Let's talk a little bit about insights on the future of FSMA in 2017. Obviously, we had an election, and we will have a new administration coming in under Trump. I've heard everything from “it'll just be full-steam ahead with current plans” to “will FSMA survive?” What are your thoughts? David: Yes, I think FSMA will survive. We've talked about this in past FSMA Fridays a little bit. Obviously, there was a very shortlived speculation that the Trump administration — this was before he became president-elect — would roll back every regulation in sight. I think there are some things in jeopardy, but FSMA's probably not one of them. Just to reiterate why I think that is the case, if we think back to where FSMA began, it truly was a bipartisan initiative on Congress' part. Industry was solidly behind it and, I think, continues to be for the most part. I don't think any of

that has really gone away, so any lobbying to destroy FSMA will not be successful. I've really not heard it. I've really not heard a significant head esteem getting up anywhere in Washington that is attempting to put FSMA on the chopping block. My instincts are that FSMA will survive pretty much in the way it's written. We should just make that assumption. It's not FSMA-related, but I think the one regulation that's out there that may be on the chopping block, which I may have mentioned before, is manual labeling. That's much more contentious. There are lots of questions about the true public health benefit of that. Also, it is part of the healthcare reform act, which has also been slated for some fairly-heavy editing and thus it may get chopped out. Right now, that's not happening. We've got compliance dates, so we've got to go full steam ahead. That one may change; may get chopped. I suspect it will change in some way if it doesn't get removed altogether.

Secop successfully closes out its 60th fiscal year The German compressor manufacturer, Secop GmbH, wrapped up the end of 2016 with a positive outlook. Headquartered in Flensburg, Northern Germany, and emerged out of Danfoss Compressors GmbH in 2010, Secop’s use of natural refrigerants, energy efficiency and speed control is the driving force behind the company’s strategy. The highlight of the year was the company’s presence at the leading industry event Chillventa 2016, showcasing new and intelligent compressor solutions. Natural refrigerants on the rise In the 1990’s Secop had already begun using environmentally friendly hydrocarbons such as R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane) as refrigerants. Since then the company continued developing climate friendly compressor solutions. The move to reduce fluorinated hydrocarbons (HFCs) which has been in process for years, has favored this strategic decision. On October 14, 2016, the participating countries agreed at a meeting in Rwanda’s capital Kigali on the further reduction of HFCs as refrigerants. Scientists expect that the extension of the Montreal Protocol will prevent a temperature increase of 0.5 degrees Celsius before the end of this century. “We are very happy about this particular result of the negotiations in Rwanda and feel ourselves encouraged in our early commitment towards hydrocarbons as refrigerants,” says Mogens Søholm, CEO of Secop. Hydrocarbons have a

20 REFRIGERATION Magazine │March 2017

significantly lowered Global Warming Potential (GWP) compared to the widely used HFCs. An additional advantage is the nature of the compound; unlike energy- and resource-intensive production of HFCs, hydrocarbons can be mined and used directly from nature. Variable Speed Drive – Setting the standard for modern commercial refrigeration With their VSD-line, Secop brings compressors with variable speed and energy optimized components to the market. The compressors can be adjusted to the actual system requirements. Higher initial temperatures and a lower point of condensation provide a higher efficiency and energy savings up to 40 percent. The small dimensions additionally grant a higher net volume of the cabinet itself. All settings can be adjusted and optimized through Secop’s software Tool4Cool®. Secop at Chillventa 2016 An additional highlight was Secop’s presence at Chillventa 2016, showcasing intelligent compressor solutions for the three main segments: household, commercial and mobile refrigeration. Apart from the new SLVE-compressor, there was also a bottle cooler – equipped with a Secop compressor – out of the latest models of premium car manufacturer Bentley, and also the industry leading XV-compressor. With a measurement of exactly 100 mm in height, the XVseries can increase the net volume of refrigerators by up to 20 liters.

During the three days of the fair, Secop’s employees were welcoming numerous guests from all global markets. The summary of the trade fair was entirely positive. Søholm stated at the fair, “We are very proud to share the next step towards more efficient refrigeration in the form of our new product lines with all of our guests and customers.” About Secop Secop is a leading compressor manufacturer committed to developing and supporting technologies and products that promote energy efficiency. The company is active in the sectors of household, light commercial and DC-powered refrigeration and has developed a range of compressors which operate with the use of hydrocarbons, R600a (isobutane) and R290 (propane). Secop, formerly known as Danfoss Compressors, belongs to the German AURELIUS Group of companies since 2010. E-Mail: j.biesel@secop.com Website: secop.com

For those who maybe cannot quite place the name – Jason Hans was a long time plant manager, friend and MO Valley Board member. His wife recently died, suddenly, leaving him to try to heal while still raising two children. Tim Counsell, the past co-owner of Mr. Ice Company, is attempting to help out a little and I offered to forward this for him.
