The Election And Your Off Season There’s a lot we can’t bring you in this issue because of print deadlines: There’s an important election coming up. This publication isn’t political, although I did vote and I hope you did as well. One of my sons, 17 years old, was visiting his grandparents. I apologized to him on behalf of my country, telling him that this was the first election he ever was really paying attention to, and that it was the most messed up election of my lifetime. My parents, both in their 80s, explained that this was the most messed up election in THEIR lifetimes. You’re bound to have woken up not fully satisfied on November 9. I have confidence that, in the 240 years this nation has existed, we have weathered worse than this election. We’ve experienced actual wars involving national effort, actual depressions with breadlines and Grapes of Wrath, a President involved in crimes that spawn his resignation. We had an honest to goodness Civil War, or a War of Secession, however you want to put it. We’ve had slavery and purposeful genocide. No matter how unhappy you were Wednesday morning, I have every confidence that this nation can pull together and move on. In a somewhat less momentous note, we won’t be able to bring you IPIA coverage until next issue, so look for that. It’s getting into the genuinely off season for you. Your demand should be slacked off and your production down to a trickle. Some of you are in total shutdown projects, filling orders out of inventory. You’re hopefully attacking that long list of projects you drew up during the high season. I am sorry if you were in the path of Hurricane Matthew, but we did not have any reports of serious damage to ice plants or serious need for humanitarian relief. We’re interested in hearing any stories about relief efforts there. My sister in Savannah did have a tree fall on her house, but she was not there and nobody was hurt. There wasn’t even much rain damage. One thing about this business is that certain aspects of it are structurally fixed. You can’t figure out a way to make ice at a higher temperature, using less energy. You can’t figure out a way to get the same amount into a smaller package. You have to store it at the same temperature you make or even colder, so that’s going to use up some energy also. There won’t be a technical breakthrough in trucking, in packaging. There are ways you can change the way you work without investing in expensive capital equipment. Your biggest variable is labor, and you can find new ways to work as efficiently as possible on the plant floor and in the trucks. It’s so easy to plan and modify routes that you can stop driving even one extra mile for a delivery. Your out of stocks and service calls can be handled by email or text, minimizing office time. Are they? No, you’re not going to figure out a way to change the laws of physics. You can buy more efficient equipment if you want to invest. Or, you can take time now to really get a handle on these easy ways to squeeze efficiency out of your operation. You may not make an extra ton with the same energy, but you can sure package, dispatch and deliver that ton for less money. Now’s the time to get that done. Best!

Company Culture
What Exactly Is Culture? Consider culture your company’s personality and a competitive weapon. By Terry McKenna, Convenience Store Coaches
You hear a lot about business culture, both good and bad – think Ritz Carlton and Enron. Think of culture as your company’s personality. It’s how you do things and how you treat people: employees, peers, suppliers and customers.
system and people. System first, people second. In terms of system, what types of processes, procedures, policies and organizational structure will be required to facilitate and support, not impede, what you want to stand for?
Everyone in the company leaves their fingerprints on the culture. Each person carries influence.
Once you’ve figured out your system, turn your focus toward people. What type of people will you need that will easily fit into and drive your culture? Great companies are ruthless at only hiring people who are a perfect fit for their culture. Hiring a misfit puts your culture at risk, which in turn puts your company/brand at risk.
Culture carries a huge influence. Culture eats strategy for breakfast. Culture may be a so-called “soft issue,” but it can play hardball with your company’s bottom line. Defining Your Culture When thinking about culture, the first thing you need to ask yourself is, “What do I want my company/ brand to stand for in the eyes of my customers and the community I serve?” Is it customer service, low prices, great appearance, store design, product variety, foodservice, eye-catching landscaping, community involvement, etc.? What’s it going to be? Think long and hard about this. All great brands stand for something; not everything, something – one thing! Once you’ve figured out what it is you want your company to stand for, the next thing to think about is
6 REFRIGERATION Magazine │November 2016
Hard vs. Soft Culture Components In terms of hard culture components, think of things like speed, agility, adaptable, innovation, operating efficiency, low cost structure, high employee engagement and productivity, customer focus and strategy development. Great cultures are organized for high performance. Great performance doesn’t happen by accident; great performance is achieved through deliberate and thoughtful design. People are the soft side of culture. If you want to stand for customer service, then hiring friendly, outgoing, helpful people is a must. Apple hires people with great passion, because they believe that great success is the product of great passion.
Regardless of what you’re hiring for, employees need to be team players, willing to learn, grow and develop in their job assignments, and fully engaged in their work. Training is a great way to communicate and promote your company culture, particularly onboarding training. Infusing your company’s culture into your new hires’ DNA right from the start is how you get them performing to your standards and expectations; your culture.
and reinforce those behaviors when you see them happening Bottom line: Carefully measure your company’s culture and celebrate it constantly. Terry McKenna is principal and co-founder of Convenience Store Coaches Inc. and Employee Performance Strategies Inc., where he helps convenience retailers achieve greater financial results by optimizing their workforce. McKenna can be reached at (910) 458-5227 or terrym@eps-i.com. He also maintains a blog at www.terrymckenna.typepad.com.
As important as training and skill development are to driving your culture, the example the leaders in your company set is more important. Your company’s leaders, through their behaviors, must be the walking, breathing and living testimony of your culture; they must completely embody your culture. Why so much emphasis on your leaders behaviors? Because seeing is believing! People will listen to words first, then look for supporting behaviors. If the behaviors don’t match the words, cynicism creeps into your company, trust becomes an issue, and the foundation of your culture starts to crack.
Culture Drivers In addition to training and the onboarding process, initiatives like recognition, rewards, fun and celebrations are key activities that drive culture and communicate what’s important and expected. Fun activities after work hours bonds people closer together as a team, and provides opportunity to share insights and ideas. Celebrations, as simple as pizza for lunch, communicates and reinforces desired performance and behaviors. Fun and celebrations don’t detract from work, they enhance it. The best way to see more of the behaviors and performance you desire is to recognize November 2016 │ REFRIGERATION Magazine 7

Recognition and Awards
JAX REFRIGERATION WINS TRIPLE AWARDS HVAC/Mechanical Company takes home local and national honors
On the heels of being named one of the Top 50 FastestGrowing Companies by the Jacksonville Business Journal, JAX Refrigeration was honored with two Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) National Excellence in Construction Awards. The awards ceremony was recently held at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. JAX Refrigeration received a Pyramid Award for the construction of its company headquarters in Jacksonville Beach, including the integration of its own unique, high-tech, three-pronged HVAC system. JAX Refrigeration also provided the ammonia and Freon refrigeration systems for Greencore, a Whiting-Turner Contracting food processing facility project in Rhode Island. Its work on this project received the highest Excellence In Construction honor, the Eagle Award. The ABC Excellence In Construction Awards honor the skill and creativity of the entire team – contractor, owner, architect and engineer – responsible for an outstanding merit shop construction project. The two 2016 awards mark a total of three Excellence In Construction awards for JAX Refrigeration. In 2015, JAX Refrigeration won an Eagle Award for its CXP Data Center project under the “Mechanical Commercial Project Under $2M” category. JAX Refrigeration President Mark Lowery said the awards are a product of the company’s excellent customers and employees. “It is humbling to be recognized for these honors,” said Lowery. “They represent the successful effort of each one of our employees and the positive relationships they foster with our clients, partners and peers. We are grateful to have such a wonderful team.” The Greencore project, which won the Eagle Award for the “Mechanical: Industrial – Less than $10M” category, is a 100,000-square-foot ready-to-eat food processing facility. JAX Refrigeration’s scope of work included seven hygienic rooftop make-up air handling units, 27 ammonia ceiling hung evaporators, a new ammonia engine room and four split system Freon units for freezer space. Part of the award consideration involved JAX Refrigeration’s ability to overcome the challenge of Rhode Island’s requirement of an additional Refrigeration Journeyman License for all onsite workers. JAX Refrigeration received the Pyramid Award for the construction of its own 7,000-squarefoot, $1.8 million headquarters, which was completed in October 2015. The two-story building showcases craftsmanship from the JAX

The systems were integrated with an innovative, high-tech control system that allows JAX Refrigeration to service, troubleshoot and monitor the equipment through remote access.

or those who were not in attendance at the Wisconsin Dells annual meeting, it was decided by the membership to change the size of the Board of Directors and the terms the Directors would have. The Board went from four Officers and ten Directors, with the Directors serving five-year terms to four Officers and eight Directors serving four-year terms. The positions of Supplier Representative and Immediate Past President were not involved in the change nor was the system of replacing two Directors per year on a rotating basis.
It is easy to sit back and not get too involved. The arguments are plentiful: the industry is shrinking; you’ve heard it all before; it’s too expensive; you’ve had a busy summer and have catch up work to do; it’s your family time; etc. But the fact remains, this is our livelihood, and if nothing else, the reasons you may give yourself for not attending, don’t always justify the good that your presence and input may have on your association. Plan to attend at least one meeting a year to keep your wheels turning, make new friends and share your ideas and experiences with others That’s what has kept us a solid industry for a century or more, and that’s what has kept Refrigeration Magazine in publication for 110 years!
Help Needed For A Mo. Valley Member Those who were at the convention in Wisconsin Dells heard about the terrible tragedy that has befallen the Hans family. For those who maybe cannot quite place the name, Jason Hans was a long time plant manager, friend and MO Valley Board member. His wife recently died, suddenly, leaving him to try to heal while still needing to raise two kids. Tim Counsell, the past co-owner of Mr. Ice Company is attempting to help out a little and I offered to forward this for him. Please, if you have anything you would care to donate to the auction or if you would just like to send a check either contact Tim or call Krista, at 262-424-0510. Checks should be made out to "Jason Hans family Benefit.”
The next meeting for the Mo. Valley will be March 25-29, 2017 (in conjunction with the Great Lakes Ice Association) at the Atheneum Hotel, Detroit, MI.
Listed below are the Mo. Valley officers and directors. These are the people to contact with any comments, problems, complaints or suggestions. If you would be interested in becoming a Board member please contact Immediate Past President Bob Moelter, current head of the Nominating Committee and with an expressed desire for capable people.
Thank you.

Unplug, Relax and Recharge in Charming San Luis Obispo!
L
ocated on California’s beautiful Central Coast – half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco on Highway 101 – the quaint city of San Luis Obispo (pronounced “San LOUIS o-BIS-po,” or simply “SLO”) is nestled between the scenic Coast Range and sparkling Pacific Ocean in the heart of the Central Coast Wine Country. This is Tony Horzen’s convention and home turf, and he’s excited to welcome WIA members to experience a taste of “The SLO Life” in March. Whether you come to San Luis Obispo by car, plane, or train, the scenery on the way is equally unforgettable. From wide open spaces and rolling hills dotted with oak trees, grazing cattle and vineyards, to breath-taking ocean views along the Central Coast’s pristine 80-mile coastline, you can feel the stress of life and work melt away with each mile. Once you arrive, San Luis Obispo’s casual ambiance and serene setting offers
a perfect place to “unplug” and relax, reconnect with old friends (and maybe even yourself), and refresh your perspective.
Come find your new “Happy Place!” Named “The Happiest City in America” by National Geographic – along with numerous other “Best of” accolades such as healthiest, most romantic, best college town, and best place to retire – San Luis Obispo is famous for its friendly people, small-town charm, healthoriented mind-set and quaint, vibrant Downtown where tree-lined, pedestrian-friendly streets encourage casual strolls and frequent stops to explore the many boutique shops, artisan restaurants, sidewalk cafés, pubs and art galleries. (Even Oprah Winfrey agrees, and sent TV correspondent Jenny McCarthy to find out what makes San Luis Obispan’s so “happy”. Check out the video from the Oprah’s show.) An

outdoor enthusiast’s and wine lover’s paradise, San Luis Obispo County offers great weather (averaging 315 sunny days a year), unlimited outdoor recreation options, over 200 wineries, a focus on fresh air and “farm to fork” cuisine, and a laid-back yet active lifestyle that locals proudly call “The SLO Life.”
From Ice Business to Chilled Beer – 2017 Convention highlights “on tap:” We’re planning a healthy balance of work and play at this Convention. In addition to two business meetings, interesting motivational and industry speakers, and opportunities to talk face-to-face with suppliers, we’ve line up a variety of fun activities that will allow for relaxed socializing and networking, and even some optional exercise!
Activities include: •A scenic walk on the Bob Jones “City to Sea” Trail (optional on Thursday.) • Welcome Reception with Wine Tasting – Pouring by award-winning local wineries. • Firestone Walker Brewery Tour – Private tour, hosted lunch, and talk by the owners of this highly successful Central Coast-based business on “Building Your Brand.” • Central Coast “Beach Party” – A casual “bon fire” bash with socializing, music and “s’mores.” • Chairman’s Event: “The Great Downtown SLO Pub Crawl” – An afternoon sampling craft beers with WIA friends at several popular Downtown San Luis Obispo pubs. • Evening Final Reception – Wrap up the convention in style at the Cliffs Resort.
Hotel Accommodations: Luxury with a View. Our host hotel for the 2017 Convention will be The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach – perched high on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean’s edge (and their own sandy beach) – just 10 scenic minutes from Downtown San Luis Obispo. Fresh from a recent hotel and restaurant renovation, the full-service, family-friendly, oceanfront resort features firstclass amenities and an exceptional guest experience. •G uest rooms and suites: A perfect fusion of coastal elegance and “California Cool” with private balconies or patios, Italian marble baths, HD flat screen TVs, highspeed Internet and comfortable workstations – each with breathtaking ocean, coastal, or mountain views. • Heated oceanfront swimming pool, 24-hour fitness center, on-site sauna and spa services. • Complimentary shuttle service to and from San Luis Obispo Regional Airport (SBP) and 2 local Amtrak stations.
Getting There:
If you are coming from the north (i.e. San Francisco), you can also take scenic Highway 1 – designated an American Scenic Byway – for a breath-taking drive through the Big Sur region and along 85-miles of pristine California coastline. (Note: Check ahead with CalTrans for current SR 1 road conditions. Also plan some extra time for stops to take in the spectacular views, and look for migrating California Gray Whales.) By Train – Amtrak serves San Luis Obispo several times a day via the Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner.
SLO Down and Stay a While: If your schedule allows, Tony suggests coming a few days early or staying on after the convention to explore more of what San Luis Obispo County has to offer. There’s something for everyone. Here’s a small sampling: •W ine Tasting – Sample world-class wines at over 200 wineries countywide – 31 located within minutes of downtown San Luis Obispo and our hotel in Pismo Beach. •O utdoor activities – Golfing, hiking, biking, horse-back riding, kayaking, surfing, zip-lining, bird-watching, or just a relaxing day at the beach. • San Luis Obispo’s world-famous “Thursday Night Farmer’s Market.” •H earst Castle – William Randolph Hearst’s elaborate summer home (in San Simeon). •M orro Bay – Enjoy the charm of this quaint seaside fishing town (15-minutes north of SLO).
Please mark your calendars to join Tony and fellow Western Ice Association members in San Luis Obispo from March 23 – 26, 2017. Watch for your Convention Registration Packet in the mail soon.
By Air – San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) is served by two regional carriers, United Express (United Airlines) and US Airways (American Airlines) with direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Phoenix. (Pre-arrange free pick-up by The Cliff’s hotel courtesy van.) By Car – San Luis Obispo County is located mid-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco on U.S. Highway 101, which runs north and south through the heart of the county. From the Central Valley and Interstate Highway 5, head west to the coast on State Highways 41, 46 or 166.
