What Are You Doing Next Month? I heard a wise thing said to a person who was going through a marriagethreatening crisis: Right now, you should only be thinking about your marriage, your children, and your business. If you make a decision that doesn’t help one of those things, you are going backwards. I can’t do anything about the first two. I hope your marriage is getting better and that your kids are safe, well and achieving their full potential. Sincerely, I do wish you those things. I can help you with the third thing. I can help you work on your business. Which brings up my question: What are you doing next month? In last month's column, I wrote about assessing your season, taking stock of things and figuring out your winter plan. You got that finished, right? So now you want to make concrete steps towards improving the business. You could have contacted your key vendors by now. You may have even started a spreadsheet that will detail the costs and potential revenues of the projects you’re undertaking. You may have put a truck out to the used truck dealer already to get it out of fleet, off your insurance and free up some cash flow. But who are you going to talk to about all these plans? Those of us whose parents are alive may be lucky enough to ask for their advice. Honestly, though, my dad has been out of the workforce for a long time and doesn’t keep up. Besides, he was an engineer for a defense contractor. He really doesn’t know much about private enterprise. Bankers haven’t impressed me for a long time. When I had a local bank, they at least paid attention and seemed like they could make decisions. The current banking industry has been replaced by a touch screen: does your business fit this category? Yes/No. Submit your financials. Please wait while decision calculates. If you aren’t filling in the blanks, do you have a banker who can really offer you any help? You’re in a fairly unique business. It’s a lot like a frozen food business, but on the other hand it’s not anything like one. Maybe closer to a bakery, but of course totally not a bakery. Ice cream? No. Produce? Shrimp? Face it, there’s nothing that is close to your business. So who exactly can you talk to about it? What if you knew some people who were in the exact same business as you - and I mean the exact - who are not competing with you and are going through the same struggles and triumphs? That could be a valuable contact, and possibly a good sounding board. But where? Once again, what are you doing next month? Because on November 8, I know a place where a whole bunch of like minded people, not competitive to you, will be gathering for a couple of days. It is in San Antonio. It’s called the IPIA Convention It’s a lot of fun, doesn’t cost that much, and most importantly it can help your business. Go with an open mind. Don’t expect to figure out a way to make money rain down, but do look at ways you can apply other people’s learning to your own business. Let it be a break - it’s probably warmer than where you live, and it’s pretty. Then go back home and make it happen. Here’s looking at a great 2017 season!

even years ago AIS, in collaboration with RAESCO, built the first fully automated packaged ice manufacturing system for a trusted client in St. Louis. This system was engineered on the principles of operational throughput and productivity used to build factories in other manufacturing processes outside the ice industry. The concept was to build an ice factory, not to simply add a palletizing machine to the end of an existing packaging line. Our goal was to virtually eliminate labor from the process of manufacturing pallets of packaged ice while greatly increasing operational productivity and reliability. Since this first concept system in St. Louis, we have developed numerous fully automated packaged ice factories throughout the country. These ice factories range in size from expandable 100 pallet per day facilities to plants capable of producing over 350 pallets of packaged ice per day. No matter the capacity, all these factories are built to operate with only one operational supervisor.

Automatic Ice Systems Inc. is developing tomorrow’s automation solutions for today’s packaged ice producers.
Last year, AIS collaborated with two long-time palletizing system partners to produce our own line of packaged ice palletizing machines. The model A1 Automatic ICE™ Palletizing System is similar to previously offered machines built for fully automated systems. This machine is engineered to be integrated with automatic pallet dispensers, pallet roller conveyors, and fully automatic stretch wrapping components. The resulting automatic palletizing platform only requires an operator to remove finished, stretch-wrapped pallets of ice and load empty pallets into the automatic pallet dispenser. We have made both mechanical, electrical, and programming updates throughout
this platform to yield even more reliable packaging and palletizing operations. In addition to the A1 fully automatic platform, we also redeveloped a semiautomatic, two chamber model SA2. The semi-automatic model SA2 requires an operator to remove the finished pallet from the stacking chamber and insert an empty pallet in its place. While the operator manually changes pallets, stacking operations continue uninterrupted in the other stacking chamber. This model features an all new, custom engineered electronic control and integration system utilizing proven Alan Bradley components. This new control platform is much more reliable, productive, and user friendly than previously offered semi-automatic palletizing platforms. And, like the fully automatic A1, the SA2 features structural and mechanical updates throughout to yield more years of reliable, productive operations. Our engineering team is challenged with building equipment and integration enhancements into each new project. We are never satisfied with building the same system twice. We learn from each application and improve our solutions with each project opportunity. The added resources offered through our new manufacturing partnership will continue to fast track this progress and secure Automatic Ice Systems Inc. as the market leader in packaged ice plant automation for many years to come. Automatic Ice Systems Inc. is developing tomorrow’s automation solutions for today’s packaged ice producers. Whether you are considering semiautomatic palletizing, or complete system automation, Automatic ICE™ Palletizing Systems deliver solutions unmatched by the competition.

PAII
Photos from the Packaged Ice Association of Australasia
A Minute With Neil, Gary and The PAII Neil Gannon, outgoing CEO of the PIAA, and his wife Elvie, PIAA treasurer, have held these positions for over 13 years. Prior to that, they had their own Ice business, Northern Ice at Swan Hill (in country Victoria) for more than 16 years. Gary Wing has been affiliated with the Ice Industry for over 30 years as a supplier of Polyethylene Ice Bags, with the last 16 years as General Manager of Wing Flexible Packaging a leading supplier to the Ice Industry in Australia & New Zealand. Gary left this position in November 2015 with semiretirement in mind. The position of CEO/Treasurer was soon to become available, and Gary says he saw this as a good fit. He applied and was voted in by the Executive Committee. Gary officially takes over this position in October. He has been closely involved with the PIAA for over 20 years attending and supporting the vast majority of conferences during this period. For about the last 10 years, Gary has served on the Executive Committee as State Delegate and 1st Vice President. Refrigeration welcomes Gary and the rest of the longtime PIAA members and activities, into the pages of our ice family publication. 24 REFRIGERATION Magazine │October 2016
