The photos on this page show a few of the reasons why I enjoy, yet depend on, regional meetings. They are intimate gatherings where quality time can be spent with one another. They are an important way to get to know your suppliers, your fellow ice manufacturers, and the elected and appointed officers who also have a hand in moving your association forward, to keep pace with the industry, and the times in general. One of the photos shows a recipient of a scholarship awarded by Mo. Valley. Be sure to inquire about college scholarships offered by your association. The IPIA offers scholarships as well. This alone makes your association dues worth every penny. Make sure to find the new members at your next meeting and make them feel at home. I’ve met ice people in the past who had mixed feelings about joining a group. Their main comment was, “I’m too independent to go with their flow and their rules,” or something along those lines. My comment is something to the effect of, “Yes, and so is everyone else but it’s all to the good, and you will learn a lot and make valuable friends.” Later, these same people have called to let me know they joined, or attended, and shared how it was all worth it. I’m lucky to always be making friends and learning more and more about our talented suppliers and how they keep up with technology and consumer wish-lists, staying ahead of the curve often enough. And I’m grateful to the many ice manufacturers who have given most of their hard working lives to this industry. As a case in point, one of those ‘ice couples’, Dennis and Katie Menke, lived above their ice plant for many years. I was lucky enough to have a little quality sit down time with them at a recent meeting. They are ‘retired’ but visit the conventions and are always a welcomed sight. Read the comments about the Menkes on page 22. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I am thankful for all of you.

We love hearing from our longtime ice industry family members. Here are two recent letters from you. Many will remember both of these names among us.
Memories
Hi, Mary. Looking at your magazine today. It's brought back so many good times. I would look forward to reading your magazine as far back as the 70s working with my dad, Phil Losquadro of Huntington Ice. It's good to see you have kept the tradition going. All the best to the Yopp family. – Leonard Losquadro, Llosquadro@gmail.com
Family Member Keeps Ice Plant Tradition Alive
This is Gerard Montz in LaPlace, Louisiana. I don’t know if you remember me or not (of course we do, Mr. Montz!) but I used to write to you all the time in the early 1990’s about my Grandfather’s ice factory. I see you are back at the controls of the magazine and wanted to say hi. I have never personally met you, but feel like you are an old friend. You all at Refrigeration were very helpful and kind back in the days when I was researching and doing all the ice plant museum projects. I am still at it. My museum is basically just a personal satisfaction thing and isn’t open to the public. All of the remaining Fairbanks-Morse engines and compressors were scrapped by one of my family members (not my idea). One was sold several years ago to a cotton gin in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. All that’s left at the ice plant site is an old Baker ice machine and/or compressor sitting out in the weeds. My latest project is a book about my grandfather and ice and farming endeavors. I have just started this project and I am not even close to being finished. It will be of local interest to those in the community who knew about him. I will probably self-publish only 50 to 100 copies. I will keep an eye out for any interesting ice related stories here in Southeastern Louisiana. I can’t promise anything, but if I come across anything interesting, (historical or otherwise), I will pass it along to you. – Gerard Montz, Wodash2@aol.com

Book Review
CHILLED ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tom Jackson is a science writer who specializes in recasting science and technology into lively historical narratives, told through the deeds of the people that discovered them. A former zookeeper, travel writer, buffalo catcher and filing clerk, he is the author of several books, including Physics: An Illustrated History of the Foundations of Science. He lives in Bristol, UK.
How Refrigeration Changed The World And Might Do So Again
Though keeping food cold is taken for granted, the ability to keep things frozen for extended periods of time challenged humans for ages, and only became commonplace in the last century. In CHILLED: How Refrigeration Changed the World and Might Do So Again (Bloomsbury, on sale September 22, $27 hardcover, 272 pages), science writer Tom Jackson tells the global history of efforts to harness cold in a compelling historical narrative that is steeped in science. With witty prose, Jackson moves from Persia to the Regents Canal, telling the stories of Galileo, the Ice King of Boston, and a Renaissance duke addicted to iced eggnog. Not only is the history of refrigeration surprisingly fascinating, but it has been critical in some of the most important breakthroughs of the last century. Jackson works his way forward through the centuries, chronicling first a growing understanding of just what “cold” actually is and does, and then the ways and means that individuals began to profit from it.
Jackson makes it clear that “it’s the fridge that makes the modern city” and that refrigeration makes possible everything from nitrogen fertilizers to the bizarre Bose-Einstein condensate, a fifth state of matter only possible at billionths of a degree above absolute zero. He also looks to the future for further advances that frigidity may make possible, noting that development of a quantum computer will almost certainly akes "…refrigeration m depend on scientists’ ability to wield cold and seeing the Boseom fr ng Einstein condensate as a potential component of teleportation possible everythi engineering. Refrigeration is needed for everything from making to the soap to storing penicillin. In-vitro fertilization would be impossible nitrogen fertilizers without it. In CHILLED, Tom Jackson posits that refrigeration will also be crucial to our future technologies, perhaps even more so than it has been in the last one hundred years. Refrigeration is something that most of us take for granted and only notice when there is a power outage or in a heat wave. Jackson shows its true importance in this revelatory book.

Are You Changing Fast Enough? You’re either moving forward or backward, but never standing still.
By Terry McKenna, Convenience Store Coaches & Employee Performance Strategies
T
here are two types of soldiers on the battlefield: the quick and the dead. The same goes for business. You’re either moving forward or backward, but you are never standing still. As the saying goes, “The future is something you create, not something that happens to you.” So, the question you have to ask yourself is this: Are you creating your future or are you sitting passively letting the future create you? In this context, the future is defined as your competitors, customers, marketplace and trends. Change isn’t an issue of “will you” or "won’t you” — organizations have to change to stay alive; otherwise they’ll go the way of the dinosaur.
The issue is will you change on your terms or be forced to change on your competitor’s terms. Being forced to change on your competitor’s terms is usually competitive suicide. Any way you look at it, every organization is eventually going to spend money on change. The only questions are: when, how much, and will there be anything to show for it?
Current Realities There are approximately 152,794 convenience stores today. In 1984, there were 85,300 convenience stores. That’s a 56-percent increase over the past 31 years. Back in 1984, you probably weren’t worried about losing business to dollar stores (26,572) or drugstores (41,799) because they didn’t sell the same products and target the same customers as you. And if increased competition isn’t enough to deal with, there’s declining fuel volume, tobacco sales and gross profit margins, and rising operating costs: PCI, EMV, health care. That’s a lot of change, isn’t it? Customers have also changed because technology has ushered in the era of bigger, faster and cheaper. Customers today are more knowledgeable and demanding, with multiple options available either at the intersection where your store is located, or a mere click away on their smartphones.
12 REFRIGERATION Magazine │ November 2015
Sometimes, though, the more things change, the more they stay the same. For example, a recent convenience industry survey reported that the top five decision influencers when deciding to choose a convenience store are: • • • • •
AMMONIA PARTS FARLEYS FRIGERATION
onvenient location (cited by 83 percent of respondents) C Clean (83 percent) Fast (81 percent) Organized (76 percent) Safe (74 percent)
Food and beverages came in at 69 percent, and décor and atmosphere at 51 percent. So if you don’t have a robust foodservice program or a shiny, new 4,000-squarefoot store, there’s no excuse for not focusing on and excelling at categories two through five.
Take Action When it comes to change, stop being afraid of what could go wrong and think of what can go right. Change in and of itself is neither good nor bad; rather it is our perception of change that determines how we react to it. Test new things at your stores: programs, concepts, profit centers, services, etc. In today’s highly competitive, lightspeed marketplace, you simply can’t test enough. Turn your store into a learning lab. Keep testing new things until something sticks. Test fast, test often, fail fast and implement what is working … fast. In case you didn’t notice, the operative word here is fast. You have to pick up the pace before you get run over by a faster competitor. Change and speed need to become hardwired into your organization’s DNA. When this happens, you’ve created a competitive advantage. The goal is to get out in front of and stay ahead of the change curve.
When it comes to change, stop being afraid of what could go wrong and think of what can go right. Out in front means you’re in control of your destiny. Being caught behind the change curve means you’re playing by the market leaders’ rules — not where you want to be. If you fail to recognize or react quickly to change, you’re already dead; your obituary just hasn’t been written yet. What matters most is what you’re going to do next. Take action. Let me end with another saying: “Knowledge is power.” That saying is completely wrong. Knowledge is only power if it is put to use. In the end, all that matters is action!

There was much to take in at the recent Mo. Valley meeting at the Crowne Plaza near the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. Gorgeous weather for the most part, great tours, fellowship, solid supplier support and speakers always make the Mo. Valley a meeting you don't want to miss. Hamer and AllOver Media hosted phenomenal tours of their amazing companies. This reporter was, once again, impressed and enlightened by all who support our industry, bringing fresh, progressive innovations and insight to keep us moving forward. 14 REFRIGERATION Magazine │ November 2015

Company Profile
A Tour With AllOver Media hosted a dynamic tour during day two of the Mo. Valley Ice Manufacturers Meeting. Tony Jacobson is the Founder and CEO of AllOver Media, a National Media Franchising Company. A boyish, charismatic go-getter, Tony grew up in Hibbing, Minn., attended St. Cloud State University, and while there, decided that a great on-the-spot advertising opportunity lay right before him, while he stood at a urinal. He and a friend created a start-up using capital support from his neighbors, friends, and professionals from the Naegele Outdoor Billboard management team. Starting with what Tony dubs, ‘non-traditional or OOH (out-of-home media), his restroom ads in bars and restaurants became known as AJ Indoor Advertising. His company grew to 55 major cities, and he and his partner sold the company to a media conglomerate in 2000. Tony said he was miserable working for a large company, so he took his lessons learned and started AllOver Media in 2002, which joined the IPIA in 2007. AllOver Media specializes in indoor advertising, including door hangers, framed ads above urinals and on the backs of doors in womens’ rooms, digital indoor screen advertising, and outdoor advertising including gas pump advertising which display full-color, weatherproof ads in frames on top of gas pumps. He saw the billboard opportunity in the form of ice merchandisers on C-Store property and began his program of ‘wrapping' ice merchandisers in a business win for the store, the advertiser and the owner of the ice merchandiser.
