Here's to another 125 years, There are a few other notable 125th anniversaries this year, besides the Southern Ice Exchange (SIE). None quite as meaningful to me personally, but still in the same fine class: National Geographic, The Eiffel Tower, and Atlanta’s own Coca-Cola. The success that these other organizations have experienced are made up of the same ingredients which have blessed the SIE with its own longevity - great people who love what they do, devoted effort, and a will to keep growing and changing. Albert Schweitzer said, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” I’ve seen this among ice producers and suppliers since I attended my first convention in 1978 in Charlottsville, Va. It was the North Carolina/Virginia Ice Association at the Boar’s Head, and I have the same friends today that I made then. The ice industry doesn’t forget you. They become family right away and stick around for the rest of your life.
This year, the SIE celebrates its quasquicentennial (kwaskwi–cen–TEN-ial) in Sandestin, Fla., March 27-31. I am amazed that our industry has associations with this much staying power. Slowly but surely (and sometimes quickly) the industry has evolved. But we’ve stuck with it, and therefore, it has stuck with us, too. I wanted to celebrate all those members and suppliers that make up the SIE. I included as much as this issue would hold, but if you continue to send in your stories, we will continue to celebrate. Thank you to everyone who responded to our requests for information. While I appreciate the humbleness and modesty among the members, I am also grateful that you allow us to congratulate you on helping bring the SIE to 125 years. See you in Sandestin! Meet Dawn Ladd, SIE's Executive Director Dawn Ladd became SIE Executive Director of the SIE in 2007. Her first convention with the SIE was in Charleston, S.C. with Rick Romanoff as president. She came to the SIE after a 10 year year stint with the IPIA (1998 – 2008), so Dawn knows the ice industry and has brought much talent to the organization. As soon as I contacted Dawn for help with this special issue, I realized right away how efficient, effective and hands-on she is. She’s also easy to talk to and makes one feel like his/her ideas are important. Even though we are all busy with our families, businesses and countless other demands, she coordinated efforts and reached out to the SIE members and got me what I needed. When I asked Dawn to give me a little history on herself, she found out that her maternal grandfather, Bert Willard, owned an ice company in Jamaica, N.Y. He was originally from Saskatchewan, Canada. She says, “I found this out during research and the census report for 1930 affirms that. I do not know how long he was in the business (as he became a dairy farmer when I was a child), but I guess somewhere it was in my blood. I 4 REFRIGERATION Magazine │ March 2014

do remember having a stuffed penquin as a child when most kids had teddy bears. I live in Tampa, Fla. with my husband, Rob. I have two children and one granddaughter, plus our two 4-legged babies.” Dawn is one more example of why the SIE continues!

WHAT IS THE
SOUTHERN ICE EXCHANGE? The Southern Ice Exchange (SIE) is a regional trade association representing ice manufacturers throughout the southeast and suppliers throughout the USA and Canada. The SIE was founded in 1889 because businessmen in the ice industry decided that mutual opportunities and problems could be effectively dealt with through cooperation. This philosophy of cooperation continues today and is doubly important because of increased government activity in the business community. Membership in the SIE is voluntary, but each individual member is committed to the goal of providing quality ice products to the consuming public. The SIE is the oldest trade association in our industry. Its members are among the best established and most respected ice men and women in the country. WHAT DOES THE SIE DO FOR YOU? The Southern Ice Exchange provides a forum: 1. Where you meet your fellow ice men and women in a social environment. 2. Where you are given the opportunity to see and hear from equipment manufacturers and suppliers. 3. Where you can “air” your problems and seek solutions from suppliers and representatives in the industry. 4. Where you can learn from workshops, seminars and “bull” sessions. 5. Where you will receive THE ICE WORLD JOURNAL each quarter, so that you can keep updated on the news and happenings in the ice industry. WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN? It was spring 1833 and Apalachicola, Fla. was hot, muggy and feverridden. A young doctor named John Gorrie spent long hours treating malaria patients. Gorrie believed that simply lowering room temperature could help control the fever. He developed a crude type of air conditioning by hanging a bucket of ice in a breezeway so that it cooled the air. It helped, but there was not much ice to be had in those days. It was
6 REFRIGERATION Magazine │ March 2014
shipped all the way from the Great Lakes by boat, and certainly did not last long in Apalachicola. Gorrie was an inventive genius as well as a medical doctor. He designed and constructed his own cold-air machine – the forerunner of today’s refrigerator. In 1844, he was cooling part of his own home with the machine, when one day he discovered the machine clogged with ice. It was the first time that man had ever frozen water. Gorrie realized what had happened, and by 1845 he had built a machine that made block ice. The doctor obtained a patent for the ice machine in 1851, but was unable to sell the idea to manufacturers. Brokenhearted, he died four years later without realizing any benefits from his invention. Today, an exact replica of Dr. Gorries’s ice machine is on display in the John Gorrie State Historical Museum in Apalachicola.

SIE Companies Make this Group
An Association that Endures We’ve listed the names and places of so many wonderful ice companies which comprise the Southern Ice Exchange. Some have been around longer than others, but all have endured the economy, the storms, the disasters, the consolidation of companies, and the death, divorce or other dividing factors which are a fact of life and of business. Here are a few profiles of some of the companies who continue to operate as an independent family business in one or more sense of the word. Holiday Ice (Virginia) (Bo Russell, Dean Johnson) 800-924-5823 Holiday Ice began operations in 1947 in Suffolk, Va., under the leadership of Jim Russell. At the time, it was capable of producing 15 tons of ice per day and all deliveries were made by a small fleet of pickup trucks with ice boxes in the beds. As sales of packaged ice grew and the demand for services expanded beyond the normal routes, the decision was made to increase production and fleet operations. In the early 90s, two sons returned to help Jim push the business to the next level. In 2005, the company opened a brand new, state-of-the-art, ice manufacturing facility capable of producing 170 tons of packaged ice each day and utilizing the most advanced packaging equipment available. Sales steadily grew and once again outpaced production, so an additional 100 tons per day capacity was added in 2007. Customer demand for Holiday Ice’s excellent level of service and quality products forced Holiday to move into additional markets.
In 2010, Holiday acquired another ice company in Lawrenceville, Va. This enabled Holiday to reach markets west of Tidewater, Va. and further service capabilities. In 2012, Holiday added distribution centers in Norfolk, Va. and Raleigh, N.C., in order to enhance customer service and satisfy the requirements of its growing customer base. Today, Holiday Ice remains a family-owned and operated business and continues to evaluate ways in which to increase the levels of service and expand the level of quality products it produces. 8 REFRIGERATION Magazine │ March 2014
Buck Ice & Coal (Georgia) (Bill Buck) 706-322-5451 In 1922, T. B. Buck founded Buck Ice in Columbus, Ga. In those days, "The Red Wagon Boys" was a popular radio program about delivering ice on wagons. Later, the Buck Ice penguins, "Pete and Gladys," became a favorite of children and adults alike. Bill Buck said, “Over the years the Buck Ice family and the fine folks who work with us have continued to offer our customers and families the best ice and the best service available. We're proud of our eighty-three year history of service - in the same family, in the same location. We're even more proud to have so many folks as our customers and our friends.”
Arctic Ice Co. (Alabama) (Brent Haller) 800-801-7962 Family owned and operated for 40 years, Arctic Ice Company, LTD, Mobile, Ala., offers its customers the benefits of a company that has hands-on management which provides personal attention. “Whether your needs are for blasting/cleaning, cooling with dry ice, freezing items (cyro-freezing), or for regular (wet) ice, feel free to contact use. We have been involved in the wet ice business for 40+ years and the dry ice business for over 12 years and we believe in staying on the cutting edge of technology.”
Spotlight Carolina Quality Ice (South Carolina) (Joe Williams) 864-814-3535 Family owned and operated, Carolina Quality Ice, Spartanburg, S.C., is selling packaged ice to retail locations in the Greenville and Spartanburg areas. As a local manufacturer, Carolina Quality Ice can provide ice to your location, from our Spartanburg refrigerated distribution center. With route sales and call-in service, a delivery schedule can be tailored to meet any needs. The company states, “Remember that, while we may not be as big as our larger competitors, we’re dedicated to a personal level of service. Maybe that explains our consistent 5-star reviews on the Intuit Business Directory, Yahoo! Local and Yelp.” Carolina Quality Ice is an SIE member and also a member of the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores. Harman Ice & Cold Storage (Tennessee) (H. Reese, Andrew and Harry Harman) 800-886-9164 Harman Ice began in Johnson City, Tenn. in January of 1915 when C.E. Walker and his brother-in-law R.E. Harman partnered together to form Walker Ice and Coal Company. At this time the ice business consisted of producing large 300 pound blocks which were delivered to homes by horse and wagon and used for refrigeration in iceboxes, early examples of the modern electric refrigerator. In addition to ice manufacturing, the company also delivered coal to homes, which was burned for heat during winter. The company operated as Walker Ice and Coal until January 15, 1935 when at a board of directors meeting, R.E. Harman opted to exercise the “buy” option of a buy/ sell agreement between himself and C.E. Walker. The
move made Mr. Harman the sole owner of the company at which time he re-named it Harman Ice and Coal Company. Following the buyout, Mr. Harman was joined by his son Estel Harman who assisted him in operating the family business. R.E. and Estel continued to focus on home delivery and coal until the end of WWII when mass production of the electric refrigerator began. The introduction of the refrigerator eliminated the need for block ice, forcing the father and son to look for other sources of revenue. The pair began experimenting with forcing the 300 pound blocks through a crusher and packaging the “cubes” in paper bags for use at filling stations, grocery stores, and movie theaters. This new form of ice business grew rapidly along with the frozen food and cold storage businesses. In 1967 the company entered a new era when Harry E. Harman joined his father and grandfather in the family business. Harry continued the process of crushing and packaging block ice until 1981 when he purchased the company’s first two 4.5 ton automatic tube ice makers. As the company grew, Harry continued to add additional ice makers to meet demand. By 1997 the company had a total production capacity of 40 tons per day. In 1997 Harry’s son Reese joined the company along with his brother, Andy, in 2001. As the company grew, so did the need to produce more ice. In the winter of 2001 the family decided to upgrade the Johnson City facility by installing new ice makers and packaging equipment, increasing the plant’s capacity to 60 tons per day. The following year more production equipment was added bringing the size of the plant to 130 tons per day. Today, Harman Ice operates 130 ton ice plants in Johnson City and Knoxville, Tenn. and a distribution center in Kodak, Tenn. The plants are capable of producing more than 50,000 packages per day and can store on hand more than 800,000 packages. The Harman Ice market covers all of east Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and western North Carolina. The company is still owned and operated by Harry, Reese, and Andy Harman. Rose Ice & Coal (North Carolina) (Archie Harris) 800-282-3703 On a recent Tuesday, Archie Harris sits at his desk in the back of Rose Ice Company. He pulls out a card with four numbers on it: 25 and 50 on one side, 75 and 100 on the other. “Know what this is?” he asks. It’s an order card that Wilmington residents hung in their windows to let the iceman know how many pounds of ice to leave at their houses.
March 2014 │ REFRIGERATION Magazine 9
Spotlight Then Harris brings out an ice pick with Rose Ice & Coal Co. written on one side. The address and “Phone 40” is written on the other. That was the phone number in 1933 when the company started. At the time, Wilmington had at least five ice companies. Today, Rose is the only one left. The white block building that houses the business still has “Rose Ice & Coal Co.” painted in capital letters across the front. “Almost every ice business also had coal,” Harris says. “If you sold ice in the summertime, you’d starve to death in the wintertime.” When Harris bought the business from the Rose family in 1973, he still sold coal, and he still delivered ice to some houses on a regular basis. Today he no longer sells coal, and his primary ice customers are restaurants, chemical companies, grocery stores, and convenience stores. Harris might not be as well known around town as the icemen of the early 1900s, but he knows this industry. Last year he was the chairman of the International Packaged Ice Association and is a member of the Southern Ice Association Hall of Fame. His ice has even been on screen. When directors of the TV show “Dawson’s Creek,” which was filmed in Wilmington for six years, needed an ice rink, Harris provided it. When the props man on the set of "Firestarter," also filmed in Wilmington, couldn’t figure out how to make a wall of ice melt in an instant, Harris had a plan. “I told the director, ‘If you’ll get your people out of here, my people will have the ice in here in 10 minutes.’”
Morgan’s Ice (Alabama) (Mark McDaniel) 800-467-0020 In 1965, the Morgan family owned and operated a Gulf gas station in the small town of Robertsdale, Ala. With the frustration of never having enough ice to sell to their customers, the Morgans decided to buy their very own ice machine. They bagged and tied their own ice and soon had plenty to sell. Or so they thought. Before they knew it, the Morgans were receiving phone calls from all over town about buying ice. And this is how the distribution side of their new-found business began. As time went on, the ice business grew to a whole new level and larger ice machines had to be purchased to keep up with their expanding business. The manufacturing and distribution of Morgan’s Ice has a production in excess of 180 tons per day along with 10 distribution trucks. Their routes reach east to the panhandle of Florida, west to the state line of Mississippi, north through Monroe County, and south to the Gulf of Mexico. Morgan’s says, “We are proud to be a part of this history and pride ourselves in customer building relationships. We believe in the integrity of our employees and only together can we continue to do be a success!”
Harris and Rose Ice Company now service much of southeastern North Carolina. His business is seasonal, and he still about starves in the wintertime, he says. But he’s carrying on a business in this town that’s lasted almost two centuries. The memorabilia he keeps shows it means something to him. And you can guarantee Harris doesn’t take it for granted when he plunks a few pieces of ice into his glass of tea. “OUR PACKAGING IS FLEXIBLE, OUR QUALITY IS NOT” ™

years ago the Coca-Cola Company was incorporated in Atlanta, Georgia. A fine southern institution! When you think about it, if you want to celebrate 125 years of refreshing beverage enjoyment, you have to include the people who help make that refreshing experience possible - the people who make up the ice industry. After all, if you want an ice cold beverage, start with ice! So today we invite you to join us as we celebrate another fine southern institution celebrating 125 years of excellence - Southern Ice Exchange, Inc. We celebrate their ceaseless promotion of the ice business, the high standards they’ve helped bring to the industry, and their commitment to furthering education and skills. And because enjoying good times together is important, we celebrate the 125 years of ice cold refreshment they’ve brought to all of us.
Happy 125th SIE!
And thank you from your friends at Hercules Poly. We’re proud to be a packaging partner and SIE Supplier Member.
