Associations Endure It’s going to be a razzle dazzle of a convention at the IPIA 100th in Huntington Beach, CA, November 14-18th at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa.
Starting as the National Association of Ice Industries in 1917, the group has endured many changes in the ice industry and remained strong and aggressive as a food safety and industry leader on many fronts. Under the Executive Leadership of Jane McEwen and her team of committee experts and watchdogs, the IPIA as it is known now, has had major successes in creating an ice manufacturing process which places purity, non-contamination, and safety at its helm. Jane and I go back to the late 1970’s in the industry, but she works a lot smarter than I do!
Congrats to Team IPIA on staying strong and keeping us all moving forward, and staying motivated, even excited about the future of the ice industry. We’ve all experienced the aftermath of consolidation, mergers, and shrinking pools of customers and revenue, but IPIA has helped bring a new outlook and market opportunities to the big screen of business. Speaking of aftermath, another type is the overwhelming cleanup pressure and process in many parts of the stricken U.S. and Caribbean islands. So many of our ice people have been there, either in the midst of it, thankfully surviving, or in the disaster relief efforts. Hats off to you, our beloved fellows. Our hearts and gratitude are with you. Enjoy the fall weather, and the camaraderie we enjoy as a tight industry. And thanks for reading this issue of Refrigeration. All the Best!
"We’ve all experienced the aftermath of consolidation, mergers, and shrinking pools of customers and revenue, but IPIA has helped bring a new outlook and market opportunities to the big screen of business."

IPIA CENTENNIAL CONVENTION & TRADE SHOW ※ November 14 – 18, 2017
CHAIRMAN’S LETTER COME CELEBRATE 100 YEARS
From Dann Ades, IPIA Chairman On behalf of the International Packaged Ice Association, Linda and I want to invite and welcome you to the 100th IPIA Convention and Trade Show. The setting for this year’s exquisite celebration is the Hyatt Regency Resort in Huntington Beach, California, located on the beautiful Pacific coast of Southern California. The Resort is a top rated facility with rooms with gorgeous views, exceptional Convention space, excellent restaurants and located on the beach within walking distance to the famous Huntington Beach Pier and “The Strand”. Everyone will enjoy the relaxed Southern California Beach environment while celebrating this once in a lifetime Centennial Event of our industry. The Los Angeles area has been my home for over 50 years and has a lot to offer. Come enjoy the convention and plan some extra time to see L.A., Hollywood, Disneyland, the California Coast and so much more.
Leer heralds the Dawn of a New Ice Age – Retailing your own Packaged Ice Leer’s product innovation and industry leadership is once again crystal clear with the introduction of the new Ice Breaker TM – providing a superior selling experience for Ice Companies with the desired buying experience for consumers. Search for those new locations where there is a demand for ice, but currently no supply – rest stops, parks, marinas, campgrounds, state and county fairs. Set an Ice Breaker at these strategic locations and begin retailing your own ice - 24/7. Your profit potential is limitless. Sell more ice, more often with the Ice BreakerTM and open up new channels of opportunity and profitability.
This year we have gone “All Out” to make a special convention and trade show. We’ve had 100 years to prepare and now it’s time to reflect on the past, celebrate, and plan the future. The agenda is full of educational programs, top shelf speakers, a Plant Tour of Cold Star Ice, networking events, a Historical Display of tools, equipment and pictures, a loaded 20,000 sq. ft. Exhibit Hall full of the latest technology and equipment, a “Night of the Stars” Centennial Celebration, and a final “Surfs Up” chairman’s party worthy of the 100 years of Ice Industry excellence.
IT ALL STARTS ON TUESDAY NOVEMBER 14, 2017. SO BE SURE TO ARRIVE EARLY! There will be PIQCS/FSMA training followed by our Annual business meeting and a Public Affairs update by Chris Lamond. Then comes our Centennial opening session with speaker Jim Knight, former training manager for Hard Rock Café presenting “Culture that Rocks. The night kicks in with the Exhibit Hall Grand
Opening. You will be enthralled by the exhibits and the Historical theme that brings nostalgic ice history to the modern day. WEDNESDAY starts off with the Roger Breisch Memorial walk/run on the beach boardwalk followed by breakfast in the Exhibit Hall with our dedicated suppliers. The plant tour of Cold Star Ice (one of my favorite’s), with lunch, and ice bag throwing contest. Evening brings a Cocktail Reception in the Exhibit Hall and a free night to enjoy dinner on your own with friends and colleagues. THURSDAY starts off with the walk/run on the beach boardwalk. Then more Exhibit Hall time with Breakfast served. Education will continue as we rotate between two fabulous speakers. Marc Koehler will help you “Lead with Purpose” now that you have an idea about the culture you want, lead your people with passion and a purpose. Jack Quarles will help you save money by working with your vendors and identifying some “Expensive Sentences” you and your team may be using. More Exhibit Hall time will be available. And finally the “Night of the Stars” the Red Carpet will be rolled out for this exquisite Diamond event. Dress to the Nines as we Celebrate 100 years as an association and recognize industry leaders. The passing of the gavel to incoming Chairman Jeff Tyler who will lead us into the next centennial will cap off the evening. FRIDAY is a day to educate in the morning and then relax and enjoy planned activities throughout the day. The Convention caps off that night with the “Surfs Up” Chairman’s party. We continue the celebration in a relaxed atmosphere- California style. Eat, Dance, enjoy the sunset, try your surfing skills, play games and enjoy the final evening chatting with friends about all the fun we had this week. I urge you to come and be a part of this Historical event. You will gain great knowledge, see leading edge technology in our industry, make new friends, rekindle old relationships, and reach new ice heights cooler than you can imagine! Linda and I are excited to host this Centennial Event. We look forward to welcoming you to the Hyatt Regency resort Huntington Beach. Travel safe! Bring your formal wear for the Gala and your beach wear for most everything else. Hey, it’s California!

COLD STAR ICE PLANT TOUR, LUNCH & ICE BAG THROWING CONTEST Wednesday, November 15th, 2017 – 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm In 1951 Floyd Ades purchased the Chino Ice Route from his cousin, the birth of Chino Ice Service occurred. In that era ice companies were shrinking. The refrigerator was becoming a household standard and the iceman a dying breed. However Floyd new the ice business well and he forecasted a change in the use of ice. Floyd had a vision of retail ice from vending machines and kept his regular ice delivery service to homes and commercial businesses into the early 60’s. In 1964 Floyd purchased his first S&S Vending machine and grew his ice company over the years. In 1973 he retired and sold his business to his eldest son Jerry. Jerry grew the ice vending company from 6 vending machines to over 25, but in 1976 the gas crisis occurred. Recreational use of ice slowed dramatically and margins eroded. Jerry envisioned higher margins by becoming a manufacturer and by 1989 Jerry grew Chino Ice Service to an ice manufacturing company of 80 tons/day. In 1990 Jerry’s son Dann graduated from college and entered the business full time. Prior to that Dann had worked in the business in every capacity, from packaging, maintenance,

distribution, and now management. Dann and Jerry had a vision for growth, so in 1998 they broke ground to construct a brand new ice plant designed to be expandable and yet compact. Starting with 100 tons/day they grew through acquisition and competitive growth. By 2009 Chino Ice Service produced 270 tons/day and transitioned to a more universal name, Cold Star Ice. By 2011 Cold Star ice had 4 facilities covering over 100 square miles in southern California. Jerry passed in 2009, however, Dann and his automation vision for the future became reality in 2015 when 2 robotic palletizers with full automation were installed. Then in 2017, the addition of another 100 tons making the facility 370 tons/day with space for a future 50 tons.
