Farewell to Alf Many of you will have known Alf Johnson, Marlborough’s Town Crier for over 20 years, who died early in May. Much loved by the community in Marlborough and I am sure further afield, Alf was a fantastic example of someone who loved people and enjoyed giving back to the community. I interviewed him in 2008 not long after the magazine started; if you are interested I’ve published the interview on our website at www.marlboroughtownandcountry.co.uk – where you can read about him in his own words. Our interviewee this month is another community stalwart – Marion Gordon-Finlayson puts on the annual outdoor play in Ogbourne Maizey, amongst other things she does to support her village and the wider community. Read all about her on page six. Enjoy the magazine,

Marion Gordon-Finlayson Marion Gordon-Finlayson, along with her husband Ian, is responsible for Ogbourne Maizey’s annual outdoor play. The couple live in Ogbourne Maizey with their Labrador, Jumble. Now retired, they have three grown up children and five grandchildren, with a sixth on the way. Tell us about yourself I grew up in Nottinghamshire, which is where I met Ian. We married in the 70s when I was 23, people got married young in those days! We lived in several places over the years including a stint in Paris (initially for two years, but ended up staying for over six). That was an experience – Ian worked for Price Waterhouse and I had work at the OECD. I learned to speak French, and overall we had a wonderful time. Our first child was born there, and we only came back to the UK because we wanted our children to grow up here. We lived near Reading for a good while, and moved to Ogbourne Maizey when Ian became Finance Director at Wadworth Brewery in 1994. Before I retired, I worked for SLCA, (a lettings agency) in Marlborough – I loved it there as you never knew who was going to come through the door, I got to meet all sorts of people, which was brilliant. How did hosting an annual play in your garden come about? After we did some work in our garden to put in steps and paths up to the higher level garden area it occurred to us that it looked like an amphitheatre. Later, we attended a Watermill Theatre production put on in Aldbourne Village Hall, and were struck by how sociable it was, much more so than going to the theatre. We thought that perhaps we could have a play in our garden for charity, so we contacted Rural Arts Wiltshire, whose purpose is to bring the arts to rural villages, and they told us about Miracle Theatre. How does it work? In the first couple of years Rural Arts handled a lot of the admin, as they had the experience. They paid the theatre company and took the risk. For that they retained 80% of the profits

6

and we had 20% to donate to our chosen charity. Once we knew what we were doing and were fairly confident that we would get enough people for the audience, we took over the running of the whole event ourselves. The main reason for this was so we could give our charities a bigger donation, as that was our main objective. You’ve stayed with Miracle Theatre every year? Yes, they are a great theatre company, based in Cornwall. They tour the South West every year with a new play, and we have become one of their regular venues. We are the furthest away from their base, but they enjoy coming to us as we put them up in the house, and provide them with dinner and a hearty breakfast the next day. We like their productions which can be anything from Shakespeare to Chekhov; all are usually adapted by the director Bill Scott, who has a delicious sense of humour. This year’s play is “A Perfect World”, an original play by Bill, with music by Tom Adams. The plays are always enjoyable, but we think people come along as much for the experience as the play. We are in our 15th year, and we

Apart from raising the money for charity, I love seeing so many people having such a good time.

People have become a fixture in the community calendar. Is it always in July? How is the weather usually? Yes, July has worked well. We have only had one year where the weather was bad, ironically the play that year was The Tempest. We managed to round up enough gazebos for the audience, and the actors just carried on regardless. Generally the weather has been kind, although as with any British outdoor event we do spend the week leading up to it obsessively consulting the weather forecast! What do you enjoy most about putting on the play? Apart from raising the money for charity, I love seeing so many people having such a good time. We open the gates at 6pm, so people can bring along picnics and chairs, before the play begins at 7.30. It really brings the community together, and we are very grateful to all the friends and neighbours that help make it such a great event. Anything you don’t love? We wish the garden would get itself ready! Also, I wish I could be a bit more relaxed about the weather, and whether we’ll raise as much money as the year before. Experience should tell me it will all be fine, but I still get a bit nervous! Last year was a record year, and we raised nearly £2000. How do you choose your charity each year? We like to help a different

charity each time as there are so many that need funds. We tend to choose charities that resonate with us – so we have supported both national and local charities. Our son was in the armed forces for a while, so we have supported military charities in the past. There’s no real theme overall. This year we have chosen Diabetes UK, as I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Do you do other work for the community? I like to keep busy. I used to be Church Warden, but I gave that up and am now on the PCC. I help out as a Link driver, (as does Ian), and I am Membership Secretary of The Merchant’s House Trust. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I’m quite an outdoors person, and enjoy walking the dog, swimming and cycling. I also love skiing; unfortunately this year I had my first serious accident – I fell and broke my hip joint. This resulted in having a hip replacement in a hospital in France; I have a nice new titanium one now. I was thankful I speak French – it made it much more bearable. All the doctors and nurses and hospital staff were wonderful. Hopefully, I’ll be able to ski again in the future – the grandchildren are just starting to learn and it is quite magical skiing with them. As well as skiing we enjoy travelling – Ian refers to it

as SKIing (Spending the Kids’ Inheritance!) Our last big trip was to the USA, and we like to visit France on a regular basis, to make the most of speaking the language. I enjoy meeting and speaking to people in other countries, and we always try to pick up at least a few words of the language – it’s good to make the effort. Watercolour painting is a pastime I enjoy – I go to a regular class in Milton Lilbourne with Jane Barne, and I am proud that one of my paintings is in the Open Exhibition at The White Horse Bookshop at the moment. Despite the fact that I swore I would never play Bridge, Ian and I have taken it up. We’re not too competitive about it, we’re purely social players! What are you reading at the moment? I’m not a big reader, I never have time except when I’m on holiday. A friend lent me a Winston Churchill biography to read whilst I recovered from my hip replacement, so I am working my way through that, and I’ve also been loaned a copy of Michelle Obama’s book which I hope to get onto next. This year’s production is A Perfect World on Thursday 11 July at Maizey Lodge, Ogbourne Maizey, SN8 1RY. Tickets are £14 adults, and £8 children under 16. Tickets in advance only - call 01672 512125 or email maizey50@gmail.com.

Art on a plate Pop along to Sarsens Restaurant and Bar in Marlborough, and you can experience good food served up on a unique piece of art. The plates used at the restaurant have all been made by local artist Jacqui Melhuish, of Wagon Yard Artists Studio. Being a fan of Jacqui’s work, I was fascinated to hear of this latest project and went along to find out all about it. “There was a generous dose of serendipity at work with this project,” explained Jacqui, “I haven’t made plates for years, but had decided I’d like to make some for home. I made a couple of trial items and decided to put them in the gallery. Next thing I know I had a phone call from Sarsens asking me if I would be interested in making some artisan plates for them.” “They were so enthusiastic, and really sold me on the idea. Luckily, I had the time, as I wasn’t running my usual pottery classes this year (more serendipity!).” Jacqui had never made items on a commercial scale before, and so liked the challenge, also enjoying the process of working with Sarsens to agree design and style of the items to be produced. In total, around 130 items were made across plates, bowls, ramekins and mini plates. The design is rustic, with a stylish spatter pattern in cobalt – each one is different. “It’s a very labour intensive process, with a number of steps: firstly I make the glaze, then roll out the clay and make the plates (each one has the edges pinched to make the rim, giving them the rustic style required); next the plates have to be stacked and dried for 3 weeks; once dry each has to be cleaned up and edges sanded; after that is the initial bisque firing; the next step is to glaze the plates, and fire to stoneware; then after this mix the cobalt and make the spatter pattern; finally, they all need to be rubbed with a smoothing stone and washed. Oh, and then packed up and delivered. There’s always a certain amount of jeopardy involved as problems can arise in the drying process and in the kiln. Luckily this went well.

“It’s fair to say most people don’t realise how much goes into handmade crockery. I did it for the challenge and also because I love the idea of people seeing and using my work. The scale of the task was different to anything I’ve done before, and although it was repetitive, I enjoyed the process, finding it meditative at times. I was very pleased with the results.” As were Sarsens. Nathan Woodley, partner at the eatery said “We are thrilled with the work Jacqui has done for us. Our ethos is about seasonal British food, sourced locally. We try to apply that to as much as possible in the restaurant, and it was great to find Jacqui. My partner Connor Thompson’s younger sister Kaia had attended her kids’ pottery class, and that’s how we happened to see the plate Jacqui had already made. Our food offering is small dishes designed for sharing so a bespoke design made lots of sense. We’ve had many comments from customers asking where the crockery is from, it’s been a great collaboration.” Jacqui has been along to Sarsens to sample the food served up on her work. “It was fantastic to see how well the designs worked with the food and in the environment of the restaurant. The food was delicious too!” Now all she needs to do is to finally get round to making those dinner plates for home! Welcome to our new Mayor

Siemens, British Aerospace and QinetiQ. His interests include history (he is a Marlborough History Society committee member and Trustee of The Merchant’s House) and he enjoys bridge, playing tennis and badminton and cheering on Leicester City FC! His chosen charities are Marlborough Scouts and the Jubilee Centre – both local and close to his heart. Mr Mayor – it’s good to have you back.

On Monday, 13 May, the Town Hall played host to the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Mr David Scott, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Dr David Hemery, The Bishop of Ramsbury, the Mayor of Swindon, former Mayors and many more to witness Town Councillors officially elect, for the second time, the Town Mayor of Marlborough - Councillor Mervyn Hall. During the traditional Mayor Making ceremony he presented his Mayoress, Cath, his wife of more than 40 years, with her Mayoress’s badge. All a welcome touch of déjà vu! Cllr Hall was previously Mayor in 2017/18 when he skilfully headed up a new council. He had a very full and productive mayoral year and following this he has served on various busy committees as well as continuing his demanding role as Chairman of the Steering Group, working towards the publication of the Marlborough Area Neighbourhood Plan. Our 709th Mayor is originally from Leicester and has lived in Marlborough since 2003. He and Cath have three grown up sons and six grandchildren, all of whom live locally in Marlborough, Swindon and Highworth. Mervyn’s principal qualifications are Chartered Engineer with a degree in Electronic Engineering and a postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies. Though now retired, he has worked in a variety of posts for Philips, Mars,

Never forgotten.. .

Marlborough Town Council was very sad to hear of the passing of our former and immensely popular Town Crier, Alfie Johnson. Alfie was born in Kingsbury Street on 20 December 1930 and apart from his national service at Bulford and Plymouth, he spent his life in Marlborough where he was a regular and welcome visitor to the town’s primary schools, a volunteer at the Jubilee Centre, an actor with the Amateur Dramatic Society, sang with the Kennet Singers and even rang

bells at St Mary’s as well as being a hard working husband and father. He became Town Crier in 1994 and after many years of loyal service he handed over his bell to current Town Crier Mike Tupman in 2016 due to ill health. In 2014, he was deservedly voted Marlborough’s Citizen of the Year. Alfie loved his town and he was certainly loved by Marlborough.

Our condolences go to his daughter Diane, his family and friends.

Lifestyle

Exam survival guide May and June this year have morphed into a mixture of driving test, GCSE mocks and A levels – all relatively new territory in our house for parents and children alike. As we muddle through, we learn from friends and relatives with older children that, yes, we will survive and yes, we may even still like each other by the time they finish. In the meantime, however, it’s “tin hat time”. I cautiously approach closed bedroom doors, not sure as to the response. Peeping round, I offer a cup of tea or just a chat or even a chance to help with revision. The reply, however, varies. Ambivalence, contempt, desperation, or sheer blind panic. I proffer the warm cup of tea with a helpful/hopeful “how’s it going?” knowing full well that my head could be bitten off any second. Only the tea softens the blow. It would be easy for me to flare up to any less than positive response and enter into a full on barney, but where will that get us, after all? Take it on the chin Fiona, they’ll be nice again soon, just go with it Fiona, it’s a rite of passage. Crumbs, nobody warned me about this stage when I brought my little bundles of joy back from the hospital sweetly slumbering in a pastel blanket. Sleep these days takes place in an airless pit with books and crockery strewn all over the floor, walls covered in mind maps and boxes of revision cards lying hither and thither. I’m not sure when windows were last opened in the revision pits or even curtains opened for that matter. Not really my ideal for effective study, but then again, what do I know?! After all, I couldn’t possibly have ever been a teenager. Dragging the lesser spotted “revisers” from their pits is another challenge. They are generally a species of solitude, only being coerced from their pits by the promise of food. The dietary requirements of this species alter at exam time from beings that will generally partake, at their watering hole, to a balanced meal of meat and two veg, to beings that now crave bowl upon bowl of chocolate breakfast cereal, smoothies and ginger biscuits.

14

The fully stocked fruit bowl, as colourful and appetising as it appears, remains neglected for the promise of the quick sugar fix lurking in the larder. The house becomes a quiet place with periods of study morphing into the respite of the mobile phone and social media access. The “revisers” perch either on their beds or under a blanket on the sofa, silently communicating with their fellow species by sending pictures of themselves looking bored or making silly faces on SnapChat or following the lives of the rich and famous on Instagram. The elders know not to approach the revisers at this time. Danger lies ahead. One misguided “how’s it going?” can be met with an “I’m on my 20 minute break, Ok?” and a look to kill. The passage of time will change things and, as the elders accept that at this crucial period, they are there only to support, read revision cards, make tea, be a taxi or provide cereal or all of the above, then all will go well. The revisers soon morph again into teenagers and the normal cycle of life resumes, well, that is until results time… tin hats back on elders, it wont be for long! Canine reproductive health: the birds and the bees

T

For most people, puppies are an instant source of happiness with their silly ways and their lovable puppy eyes. But there comes a time in every puppy’s life when he or she is going to stop being that cuddly, tiny ball of fur and start to mature. Depending on their size and breed, dogs will reach sexual maturity at different times: for small breed dogs, this can happen at 6 months of age or even earlier, and for large breed dogs it usually happens a little later. When bitches reach sexual maturity, hormones will start playing their role, and they will start coming into season, which can lead to unplanned pregnancies. After every season or heat, which usually happens twice a year, there are hormonal changes that physically prepare them for pregnancy. If the bitch is pregnant, these changes will ensure the pregnancy goes well. If she’s not, this hormonal cycle can sometimes cause physical and behavioural alterations that are not needed or wanted. This is known as a false or phantom pregnancy, and you can notice signs as if she were actually pregnant, such as lethargy, loss of appetite, nesting, nursing, a swollen belly and even secretion from the mammary glands. Even though these signs will usually resolve on their own, a false pregnancy can be a cause of distress to the bitch. The only way to prevent it is by removing this hormonal influence, which can be achieved by spaying. Spaying is a routine procedure where the ovaries and uterus are surgically removed. This can be done either by an incision in the abdomen or through a less invasive procedure called laparoscopy, in which the uterus and ovaries are removed through a small hole. This will not only put a stop to all the inconvenient hormonal alterations and physical

18

signs of a false pregnancy, but it will also have many other advantages, such as: • Decreased risk of mammary cancer, • Reduced risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra), • No unplanned and/or unwanted litters. As you’re aware, unplanned litters can lead to a rise in the number of abandoned dogs. But to tackle this problem from all angles, we also need to consider the other side of the equation of making puppies – male dogs. Neutering male dogs consists of the surgical removal of the testicles. As with spaying, this is a routine procedure that carries a low degree of risk for your dog. It offers other health benefits for him as well, such as the reduced risk of prostate disease and reproductive cancers. It can also help increase your dog’s life span as he will be less likely to get into trouble from roaming and fighting. Plus, it can help reduce the occurrence of some unwanted behaviours such as mounting and aggression.

W

If you have dogs and are not planning on breeding them, you should consider getting them neutered. Neutering can have advantages for both your pet’s health, and all dogs in general by reducing the number of unplanned puppies born and consequently the number of dogs that end up living in shelters and cannot find a home.

If you’d like to know more about canine pregnancy, reproductive health and neutering, don’t hesitate to talk to your vet.

Finance

Brexit and the Financial Sector In the past few weeks and months, the team at Chilvester have been asked about the impact of Brexit more times than we can count. It’s true that Brexit has become more complex the longer it has gone on, and with the Prime Minister getting yet another extension on the Brexit process, it’s starting to feel like the saga will never end. So it’s no surprise that a lot of people have asked what the impact of Brexit will be on the financial sector, and what they should be doing with their investments and pensions to prepare. While nothing is set in stone, we have a few thoughts on the matter. The Immediate Impacts Since the referendum in 2016, Britain’s financial services have been thrown into a state of disarray. The immediate aftermath of the vote was bleak. Between the stock markets plunging, the value of sterling suffering and consumer confidence taking a big hit, it’s no surprise that the general public worried about the state of the financial industry. The financial sector went into panic mode seemingly overnight, and it caused a lot of concern for the long-term health of the industry. After all, the financial sector contributes 12% to the UK’s GDP, generates over 2 million jobs and is responsible for 50% of the UK’s $3.1 bn trade surplus in services, making it the country’s biggest export industry. Fortunately, since that initial dip, the markets have recovered, helping to wave off concerns of immediate doom for the British economy. Long Term Effects There is a limit to how much we can predict the future when it comes to the financial sector in general, and Brexit specifically. With no hard plans in place, there is very little data to go on. But there are three areas that might see some long-term effects from the uncertainty and eventual outcome of Brexit. Regulatory: The regulatory picture surrounding Brexit is complicated, long and hasn’t been fully recognised yet. The main issue is that a lot of our financial laws come either from the EU, or from global regulators who hold the UK to a higher standard than EU rules currently do. This means that Brexit could pose a thorny long-term legislative challenge, with over 40 years of regulation not formally enshrined in UK law.

28

Economic: Over time, competing European financial centres may renew attempts to attract key Euro related activities and infrastructure, using the argument that these are better conducted from within the Eurozone under EU supervision. The UK may find it harder to resist such attacks after losing the protection of the European Court of Justice. This means we might see a slowdown in EU talent that currently comes to work in the UK, particularly in financial services. Cross-Border Trade: One of the largest identifiable risks to the sector is the potential loss of passporting rights for firms based in the UK, looking to sell services into the EU. Firms could adopt the Swiss Banking model by operating through subsidiaries without passporting rights. Many firms already have distribution or servicing hubs within the EU, such as Luxembourg or Dublin. These take advantage of local knowledge and expertise, or deal with indirect obstacles to trade within the single market for services, such as tax. So what do we know? Unfortunately, the answer to that is a very firm ‘no idea’. No financial advisor has the power to predict the future, so any suggestions of what will happen to the investment markets over the next few weeks and months are mostly guesswork. What we can do is assure our customers that, whatever happens in investment markets next week, next month or next year, we already have a clear plan toward meeting their objectives for the future. This means there’s absolutely no need to make kneejerk decisions or reactions. If you have any questions, concerns or just want to talk through your options, we’re always happy to help. Just get in touch with the team today to book your free consultation. Chilvester Financial Services
