Happy Easter! Publishing a magazine, time always seems to go by even faster – as we are always a month ahead. I’m hoping that by the time you get this Spring will truly have sprung, and that we are enjoying lovely weather. (No harm in hoping). With Easter being late this year, there should be a good chance of a fine weekend, despite the fact it is a bank holiday. I hope you all have a lovely time. As usual there is plenty to read this month – our interviewee is Jeannette Therrien, an accomplished glass designer and maker, as well as a fine teacher. If you’ve ever worried about how well your child would cope in an emergency, check out Louise Worsley’s First Aid Courses.. Fiona’s musings this month are on our fascination with reality television, from decluttering to cleaning. There’s the usual news from Marlborough Council, and good advice from the vet about vaccinating your cats. Don’t forget to check out What’s On – we need to make the most of all that good weather we’re going to have. Have a good month.

Jeannette Therrien Jeannette Therrien is a glass artist and designer, and one of the founder members of Marlborough Open Studios. She lives in Ogbourne St George with her sister-in-law Caroline, for whom she is a carer, and her poodle Rupert. Tell us about yourself I am originally from Southend on Sea, my father was French Canadian (hence my surname). I lived in London for a while, and started a business with my brother. We came to Wiltshire when we bought a Camping Shop in Swindon, and although I initially lived in Calne, eventually moved to Marlborough and then Ogbourne. How did you become interested in Glass design and making? After having gone through a difficult time when my then partner died, I wanted a new start. Caroline suggested I think about college, although I probably wouldn’t have gone for it if I hadn’t discovered that there was such a thing as an Access Course run by Swindon College – which is especially for people who haven’t followed the traditional route into education. Following this I did a BA in Ceramics with Glass at High Wycombe University – most people dropped one or the other discipline during the course but I carried on with both (I like to make life difficult for myself!) After I qualified, I set up a studio in the basement of my house in St Martin’s in Marlborough, and after a while found the building in Wagon Yard that became the Clay and Glass Studio. I was keen to teach – as I wanted to pass on to others what I had learnt. Initially I ran the studio by myself, with the downstairs for pottery, and upstairs for glass. I realised after a while that I needed help to afford the studio without having to work all the hours God sends, so started to work with other artists. Over the years collaborators have come and gone, but the group of people that are there now have been there for some time. You run most of your classes at home now? That’s right, I moved to Ogbourne St George

6

in 2001, and have a purpose built studio. Although I am still involved with Wagon Yard, it’s run now by Jacqui Melhuish, who specialises in ceramics. Now known as Wagon Yard Artists, there is a gallery upstairs that sells the work of the six artists involved, and is open on Saturdays. I run regular classes in the studio as well as the occasional one-off workshop, and I teach at Marlborough College Summer School every year. I also produce my own work. What type of work do you make? It’s varied, I make both stained glass and kiln formed pieces, from purely decorative objects and jewellery, to functional pieces used in doors and windows. There are also indoor and outdoor pieces. I have a special kiln that allows me to make glass rods, that are then used in different ways to make very distinctive pieces. I went to the USA to learn this technique a couple of years ago. Glass is surprisingly versatile. Do you take commissions? Yes, the vast majority of my stained glass work is by commission. I love the process of

People meeting clients, discussing designs and glass selection. I’ll usually sketch out the ideas and tweak as necessary, before agreeing colours. People can be as involved as they like, I’ve even had clients come with me to buy the glass for a piece. I also accept commissions for kiln formed glass too – I’m happy to discuss ideas with people if they are interested.

vibrancy of the colours and how they look in different light. I really enjoy the technicality of making each piece too, the intricacy of putting everything together. I am passionate about passing my knowledge on, and enjoy seeing people achieve more than they thought they could. I’ve made some great friends through my classes too. I feel very fortunate to do what I do.

Do you exhibit? I do – I have an exhibition coming up this Summer at Croome Walled Gardens, a National Trust property in Worcester. It will be outdoor work, and I’m busy preparing for it at the moment. I also take part in Marlborough Open Studios and have done so nearly every year since it started. (I’m proud to say I am a founding member, it has been amazing to see how much it has grown over the years).

Do you enjoy other artists’ work? Absolutely, I love seeing what other artists have produced, especially others working in glass. I like to get up to London once or twice a year to see a major exhibition. Grayson Perry is one of my favourite artists – I love his approach to both art and life. I also recently went to Messum’s Wiltshire to see the work of an amazing glass artist called Elliot Walker. I was very impressed with the place.

What is it that drew you to the medium of glass, and what do you like most about it? I love its versatility, the

What do you do in your spare time? I enjoy Tai Chi, and go to regular classes in Liddington. It’s a great form

of exercise that I think is important to keep up as I get older. I enjoy meeting up with friends when I can, and also enjoy a bit of gardening. My caring duties looking after Caroline, who has Alzheimer’s, take up a lot of my time, but I don’t begrudge it at all. Do you enjoy reading? I don’t read so much as listen to audio books, which I can do while I am working. (Also, I don’t get on brilliantly with spectacles these days!). I am partial to a good crime or legal thriller by John Grisham or Michael Connolly. One I particularly enjoyed, but not of that genre is Wild by Cheryl Strayed, I’d thoroughly recommend it. I don’t listen to music, I much prefer a good podcast – from the omnibus edition of The Archers to a good radio drama. Marlborough in Bloom – on T V! During last year’s Marlborough in Bloom, nerves were heightened due to the addition of a TV crew following the preparations and judging of the annual competition. Production company Electric Ray, commissioned by the BBC were covering the overall preparations by the Marlborough in Bloom team, as well as focusing on three of the entries for the In Your Neighbourhood (IYN) awards. The Waterfront Garden, Stonebridge Wild River Reserve and Alma Place were the featured areas. With the broadcast of the programme imminent, I spoke to Val Compton of the Waterfront Garden to see what she thought of it. “At first it was quite terrifying, the idea of being on TV, but the crew were lovely and put us at our ease.” said Val, “They came several times in the run up to judging, and for the judging itself. It was interesting to see what was involved in the making of a programme. Having a mike on all through the judging was a bit nerve wracking, as it made me very self-conscious of what I was saying! Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed taking part and I’m looking forward to seeing how the programme has been put together, it should be a great advert for Marlborough” You can watch the Marlborough episode of Britain in Bloom on Friday 12 April on BBC2 at 6.30pm, and after that on the BBC iPlayer.

Defibrillator for ARK Action for the River Kennet (ARK) is delighted to have been able to purchase a portable defibrillator to be taken wherever their volunteer tasks and activities are running throughout the year. The Friends

10

of Savernake Hospital and the Community have generously match funded this potentially lifesaving piece of equipment for ARK, a local charity which is also the Rivers Trust for the Kennet catchment. The defibrillator has the potential to be used on any member of the community wherever ARK is working. ARK’s Project Officer and Volunteer Co-ordinator Anna Forbes said, ‘We have 170+ volunteers of all ages often working in large led groups in and by the river at locations that are quite remote. Several volunteers and myself are in date first aiders and we see the defib as an extension of this. No training is needed to operate the defibrillator and I hope we never have to use it, but it is good to know we have it.’ If a defibrillator is used and effective CPR is performed within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, the chance of survival increases from 6% to 74%.

the award of £1,000 towards equipment for the Marlborough Youth Football Club which now uses the building as its base at the Recreation Ground. On 28 February 2019, a special commemorative event took place to honour Bob Pelham, founder of Pelham Puppets. Our Town Mayor, Councillor Lisa Farrell and Bob’s nieces, Astrid and Sue Pelham, unveiled the plaque which sits on the side of the curved building in Kingsbury Street and where the earliest puppets were created. The unveiling coincided with what would have been Bob’s 100th birthday, so a very special day.

What started as a small business at 3 Kingsbury Street occupying the ground and first floors was first known as Wonky Toys and became Pelham Puppets in 1947. Many of Marlborough’s residents will remember the importance of Pelham Puppets and may well have worked in the Kingsbury Street workshop or later at the factory in London Road from where puppets were made and exported all over the world. In the 1970s, it was the

In July 2017, the Town Council in partnership with David Leech and the British Puppet & Model Theatre Guild supported by a dedicated committee of volunteers hosted a festival to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Pelham Puppets. The two day event included a Puppet Parade along the High Street headed up by the Phoenix Brass Band playing the theme tune from Thunderbirds and various events celebrating puppetry even Muffin the Mule put in an appearance! This blue plaque is Marlborough’s chance to recognise Bob Pelham’s huge contribution to Marlborough’s history.

The building was reconfigured to provide a dressing room and clubhouse facility and the Tesco grant paid for new goalposts, changing room benches and hooks plus a tactical magnetic white board. Lifestyle

Life Made Art For those of you who have read my previous musings, you may recall that I had a frenetic time a year or so ago embracing the principles of “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. I can’t profess to still religiously rolling each pair of socks and pants or colour sorting them, but I am a little tidier. The same can’t be said for the rest of the family but we knew that may be a challenge too far. I see that Ms Kondo’s influence is now spread further afield by a TV series. “What?! A TV series on tidying up?” you say. Yes! I haven’t watched it but find it fascinating that this can draw a crowd of an evening. Then again, it wasn’t long ago that two ladies known as Kim and Aggie found stardom on our TVs by simply going into people’s houses and cleaning them. Admittedly they had great personalities and the chemistry between them was fun but, on reflection, a programme about cleaning… really? So, what is it about these shows that draws us? Whilst the big and flamboyant personalities may be a draw, I suspect that the issues thrown up fascinate us more. Whilst at university, many moons ago, I studied Law and Sociology and one of my courses was Social Anthropology. Probably not one which has equipped me too much for life as a lawyer, but then again, it was fascinating to learn that there were tribes in existence who did everything at the toss of a set of rune stones from a goat’s spleen. It sounds a little strange to us and possibly uncivilised but actually, is this really different to what we do in real life or just an extreme version? I think that the real reason we want to watch the shows in question is to have a good old nose into situations where life may have become difficult or perhaps overwhelming for others in some way, to the extent that their home is extremely untidy or dirty. Similarly, the TV shows about driving lessons don’t often reflect a moderately competent driver (after all, we’d all change channel). Instead, we see a “Driver from Hell” taking their test for the hundredth time. I struggle to see how having a TV camera in the car recording their every move will make them any

14

more confident or competent for the test in question though. Watching Gordon Ramsey have a good old rant at a would-be restauranteur is seen by some as entertaining too. That said, there’s hopefully the warm fuzzy end of show bit where the house gets tidied/cleaned, the test is passed or the restaurant avoids receivership and the recipient gets a pat on the head from their celebrity as they skip off to their new halcyon life. Thinking about how we are entertained now by lives happening and things happening and the Gogglebox generation, I see this evolving on social media such as Instagram. I am drawn to the life becoming art side with no hapless victims but almost zen like calming properties. The revolving picture of a large cake being iced on a constant loop is strangely soporific, as is the advert for the mindfulness videos with the flower going from bud to full bloom and full loop. This is all probably a phase in time and our current view of reality. In terms of what’s next, I think that TV viewing as we know it will morph into an experience piece and we will be able to relax into virtual reality experiences safe on our sofas at home. What I do know however is that virtual reality sock and pant tidying may just be a little too much for me. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

Could your child save a life? “This is probably one of the very few training courses where it is hoped that you never have to use what you have learned” says Louise Worsley of Worsley Training. Louise runs First-aid courses for children and adults, and her aim is that everyone should at least have the confidence to help in an emergency, with the potential of saving someone’s life. During last half term I sat in on one of Louise’s training sessions for 12-16 year olds, whilst my 13 year old son attended. As well as having over 15 years’ experience as a hands-on first aider, Louise also has ten years’ experience as a teacher in the classroom. This was evident when faced with a roomful of teenagers, nearly all with phone in hand. Mobile phones swiftly put away, Louise set about teaching the mixed group of boys and girls the basics of first aid. During the two hour session she covered the mnemonic DR ABC, which covers what to do when you come across an emergency situation – the most important of which involves calling for help and summoning the emergency services; how to deal with choking in children and

16

adults; CPR; the recovery position; and dealing with wounds with serious bleeding. The course was interactive with the children able to practice on each other and specialist first aid dummies, christened Annie and George. For choking, there was a special vest which allowed them to practice abdominal thrusts (formerly known as the Heimlich Manoeuvre). They also got to see a defibrillator and how it works. “I learnt a lot, it was good to be able to practice with the choke vest and the CPR dummies. I do feel more confident about being able to help if ever it’s needed” said my teenager afterwards. What more could you ask? Louise’s next Marlborough courses for children aged 5-9, and 10-14 are on 15 April. Check worsleytraining.co.uk for details

Vaccines for our cats! One of the most important ways to promote health in our pets is through prevention. When we feed our pets good quality diets, provide them with clean and adequate environments to live in as well as keep their hygiene in tip-top shape, we are already reducing their chances of getting sick, but vaccination is the single most effective way to prevent several deadly diseases. Vaccines work by introducing the body to a modified version of a disease that was made harmless which allows the immune system to develop long-lasting resistance to it without having to survive a full-blown infection. We consider there are two types of vaccines: Core and Non-Core. Core vaccines protect against severe or widespread diseases and should be considered for all cats, even indooronly cats or cats that are never in contact with other animals. Non-core vaccines protect against diseases that only some cats will come in contact with, for instance, outdoor cats, animals that travel abroad or cats that are usually around other cats in catteries or shows. Core vaccines Feline Infectious Enteritis This disease is caused by a highly infectious virus, and it’s one of the most important vaccines for cats, especially in rescue centres where there might be a lot of unprotected cats. It’s considered a core vaccine and with quite good reason as Feline Enteritis has no specific treatment and is almost always fatal. Infections can happen via contact with any fluids or surfaces that carry the virus, it can exist in the environment for years, and outbreaks are also very frequent. Vaccination is the only way to prevent this terrible disease, and fortunately, the vaccine is highly effective at protecting animals from it. Cat Flu The vaccine for Cat Flu protects against two viruses that cause this disease – Feline herpesvirus and Feline calicivirus. These cause significant damage to the upper respiratory tract, particularly in young cats where it can even affect the lungs if left untreated, causing severe respiratory disease. These viruses are so common, it’s considered a core vaccine as well and all cats should be vaccinated.

28

Non-Core vaccines Feline leukaemia Caused by infection with the Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV), this illness is particularly threatening to outdoor cats. The virus is transmitted through bites and through mutual grooming with infected animals shedding the virus in their urine, saliva and milk. Vaccinating against FeLV is not part of the core scheme because indoor-only cats are unlikely to come into contact with it but it should be considered for all outdoor cats. This virus causes not only several types of blood cancers (leukaemia and lymphoma), which can be deadly by themselves, but it can cause other issues like anaemia and the loss of the immune system. Rabies Rabies is part of the legal requirements for all cats that wish to travel abroad or that are returning to the UK. This disease is deadly, but it’s not considered an issue in the UK, making it a non-core vaccine. Other Non-Core vaccines: Chlamydophila felis and Bordetella bronchiseptica – both of these tend to cause problems in very specific situations like in multi-cat households or in places with a lot of young kittens though they aren’t an issue for most cats. We cannot overstate how important it is for your cats’ health to keep their vaccines up to date! Your vet can advise you on when and how to vaccinate your cat, as well as create a vaccination plan that considers their lifestyle and risks of contracting these diseases. Drove Vets
