Communit y Spirit I love the Community Spirit in this area. This month I met up with someone who is a great example of this – Daniel Claridge runs Claridge Funeral Service, a relatively new business in Marlborough. As well as providing a sympathetic and efficient service to those who have lost their loved ones, Daniel spends a lot of his spare time volunteering as a First Responder for the Ambulance Service. In addition, his business supports a lot of local causes and his family organises the regular Car Boot Sales on the Common. Not only that, wherever possible he uses local businesses such as florists, printers and celebrants. The great thing is, there are lots of people like Daniel, keen to put something back into the community, you’ll have read about a lot of them in our interviews. A nice thing to remember when all we seem to hear is bad news in the media. Enjoy the magazine,

Are you married to your partner? The number of unmarried couples living together has doubled in 10 years to 3.3m in 2017 - this is currently the fastest growing family type in the UK. Under current English Law, it is possible to live with someone for many years, have a family, then walk away without taking any responsibility for a former partner if the relationship breaks down. A recent poll of 2000 British Adults found that more than 65% still believed that there is such a thing as Common Law Marriage. There is NOT. It is therefore, very unwise for couples to rely on the mythical ‘common law’ marriage concept. If a mother gives up work and career to raise the children in the mistaken belief that she will have certain rights
because of her relationship, she is wrong. If the relationship breaks down, she has no right to a share of her partner’s income despite the fact that her earning capacity or ability to return to work may have while her career was on hold. Many unmarried couples spend years building the family home together and this will commonly be perceived by them as the joint family home.
But unless unmarried couples take steps to protect themselves they could be excluded from any share of the home should the relationship break down Equally, the provision for the children of unmarried couples is also much more restricted should their relationship end. Don’t be caught out – let Marlborough Law draft your Co-Habitation agreements for 2019 and be protected. Call now to arrange a FREE initial consultation.

Daniel Claridge Daniel Claridge runs Claridge Funeral Service in Marlborough. He lives in the town with his partner, Joe, and dog Toby. You were the youngest ever, when you were 18, to qualify as a Funeral Director. What appealed to you at such a young age? My mum used to help out at a local Funeral Director when I was younger, and at 13 I started there washing cars and doing various bits to earn some money. It meant I saw what was involved and became interested in the job, which is very varied and involves dealing with people of all backgrounds. When I was old enough to start work full time I went to work for Hillier’s in Swindon, which is where I was given the opportunity to take my diploma from the National Association of Funeral Directors. Were you ever interested in doing something else? Both my parents worked with the Ambulance Service, and before I started working at the Funeral Directors had thought that is what I would do too. After leaving Hillier’s I decided to work for the Ambulance service, as the work interests me, and I wanted to be able to do that alongside my other work. I worked as an Emergency Care Attendant (they work with a qualified Paramedic to make up a crew) for 3 years, to gain the experience that would enable me to volunteer as a First Responder once I went back to working as a Funeral Director. Towards the end of that time we were also planning to open the business, which we did in September 2017. Did it take a while to find the right premises? It did, yes. It needed to be fairly central, but discreet. We heard about the building off The Parade, which proved perfect from a location point of view. It was basically just a warehouselike shell, so we were able to fit it out to our exact specifications which gave us our ideal space, which can be flexible, even allowing us to hold small services on site. Who works in the business with you? It’s a family business. My mum, Mary, spends a lot of time here, as and when needed. My dad, Richard, still works full time for the Ambulance Service, but helps out a lot too, usually when needed outside normal office hours. We also have a number of people we can call on to help at funerals when required.
6
Do you deal with a wide variety of faiths and backgrounds? Yes, we are happy to do that. We like to offer a service that takes into account whatever a family want. I have experience of a wide array of funerals, dealing with people of many faiths, and people who are not religious at all. If you want a humanist or secular celebrant, we can help you with that, or even if you don’t want any sort of minister or celebrant at all. What do you think is the most important part of your role? Getting it right for the families of those who have passed away. It’s a very upsetting and emotional time for people, and we are there to make it as easy as possible for people to get through it. We always suggest to people that they talk to more than one Funeral Service to make sure they are happy with who they choose. Many people will never have had to organise a funeral before, so we are there to guide them through the process, helping them to ensure that they have a funeral that they feel reflects what their loved one would have wanted. Have funerals changed much over the years? I would say not hugely, except in the fact that there is now much more choice. Maybe 30 years ago, you were more or less told what you should do, without much say in the
I like working with people from all different backgrounds. I also like the fact that we work closely with our local community, not just with our clients, but with our suppliers wherever possible.

People matter. Nowadays, there are more options, from the most simple service to the most elaborate. I feel this is a great thing as it enables people to have what they feel would suit their loved one. The majority of funerals are still fairly traditional, but the choice is there for people who want something different. What sort of thing do people have that is different? All sorts -such as what the person who has died is dressed in - if you never wore a suit in life, perhaps you wouldn’t want to wear one at your funeral for instance; there is a huge choice of coffins – willow or wicker, colourful or photographic designs; people choose unusual transport, colourful hearses (there is even one with leopard print), or different vehicles altogether, such as a lorry, or even a tank! It has also become more common for people to have a different dress code for the service itself – such as clothes of a particular colour. Whatever a family want, we will try and help them. Any particularly memorable funerals that spring to mind? We had a Barney the Dinosaur themed funeral once, for a young adult with learning difficulties who loved him. It was perfect – often celebrating in a way that is so relevant to the person that has died really helps their family. Would you say you have a sad job? Sometimes it can be sad, especially if a person has died at a young age or in tragic circumstances. Having a job to do in helping the families helps us deal with that. However, often it is not
sad. Talking to families to make arrangements can often be quite uplifting as they reminisce about the person that has died, and tell interesting stories about them. It’s not unusual for there to be laughter and humour as they remember their loved ones. It’s also very rewarding to help people through a difficult time, and be a part of the community. What do you like most about it? It’s very varied, and I enjoy helping my local community. I meet some remarkable people, and hear some fascinating stories. I like working with people from all different backgrounds. I also like the fact that we work closely with our local community, not just with our clients, but with our suppliers wherever possible. What are the most important attributes of a Funeral Director? I think it’s to be approachable, and adaptable in dealing with all sorts of people – everyone is different. Attention to detail is also important, as often the little things can make all the difference. What do you do in your spare time? As mentioned, I volunteer as a First Responder for the Ambulance Service – which as it sounds means getting to someone first in an emergency. I usually do about 15-20 calls per month. You never know what to expect, but getting there more quickly than an ambulance is able to can make a big difference. I love animals. We have a beagle called Toby, that we got from Dogs Trust. He was rescued from an animal testing facility in Ireland, where he had been kept
in a cage for the first six years of his life. He was very timid to begin with, and had no familiarity with normal household objects as he’d never been out of the lab. He’s doing really well now. Cars and vehicles are also an interest of mine – I have a 1985 vintage Range Rover ambulance – it’s the only one left from that time, so we often take it to shows. I also have a 1982 Range Rover which I plan to restore. I’m planning to get a runaround Land Rover – something that I can take the dog out in. I’m lucky that I get to drive high end Jaguars, but for the business they have to be kept pristine – no dogs allowed! I like going away, but for the foreseeable I can’t be away for more than a couple of days at a time, so we tend to go away for weekends with friends. I like eating out – I’m not a keen cook, and don’t enjoy clearing up after either! There are some great places locally – Pino’s, Dan’s, Zaika and Sarsen’s spring to mind, along with The Green Dragon and The Roebuck. You enjoy putting back into the Community? Yes, I think it’s very important. We sponsor a few things in the town, such as Kennet Community Transport, kit for one of the football teams, Burbage Cricket Club, and I’ve provided Medical Cover for Mantonfest. As a family we run the Car Boot Sales on Marlborough Common, and we’re very proud that so far, we have raised £38,000 for the Air Ambulance. Claridge Funeral Service can be contacted on 01672 511386

Local News
Life as the Lord-Lieutenant Wiltshire was one of the first places in the country to have a female Lord Lieutenant, Sarah Troughton. We asked her to give us an idea of what it involves. “My main job is to be HM The Queen’s representative in the county and “to uphold the dignity of the Crown”. Old fashioned words possibly but ones I proudly attempt to adopt. Lord-Lieutenants (L-Ls), in every county in the UK, are appointed by HM on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. I was shortlisted with others, perhaps because I have been involved in the voluntary sector with Youth Action Wiltshire and The Community Foundation for many years or perhaps because I am a woman! I was interviewed and a week later a letter arrived from the then Prime Minister David Cameron inviting me to accept the position. I talked it over with my husband Peter, accepted, and I retire when I am 75. The role is unpaid. Lord-Lieutenants were created in Tudor times by Henry VIII. There was no regular Army at the time, so in times of threat and invasion the monarch asked local noblemen, later called Lieutenants, to assemble defensive forces and militia to quell frequent local rebellions and restore order. These Lieutenants were more than often Lords themselves and the term Lord-Lieutenant grew from there. The role evolved over the centuries from one of keeping law and order in the counties, certainly before there was a police force, to be the sovereign’s representative. I have an office in County Hall in Trowbridge and am L-L of the historic county of Wiltshire, (which of course is governed by two Councils, Swindon and Wiltshire), and we all work closely together. My duties are intermittent - some weeks I have 3 or 4 engagements, some weeks none, but average about 120 per annum. They vary hugely one week I am with the Wiltshire Scouts, the next we have a Royal visit, the next a Police Awards Ceremony, the one after an evening with the Royal Artillery at Larkhill, and that is why I enjoy the job so much. I am also President or Patron of a good mix of charities. My office organises a number of Royal visits each year - we had 12 in 2018. They are timeconsuming and require unbelievably detailed planning, but I believe that they are appreciated and worthwhile! Wiltshire and Swindon this last year had visits from HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, including a visit to Arkell’s Swindon Brewery and with HRH The Prince of Wales a wonderful and important visit to Salisbury after the Novichok poisonings. There were also visits

Sarah Troughton with local cadets
from The Princess Royal, The Earl and Countess of Wessex and The Duchess of Gloucester, and there are more planned for 2019. I am delighted to host a ceremony for those awarded the British Empire medal each year. We have held them at Bowood, Wiltshire Council, Great Chalfield and this year in Salisbury Cathedral. I have a badge of office - a pretty red and white enamel and pearl Tudor Rose hanging on a bow. The male L-Ls have a military uniform with a sword and spurs. The first female L-L to be chosen was the Duchess of Norfolk (a good Tudor name) in the 1960s, and there is now a healthy balance of men and women. I am the first Lady LordLieutenant in Wiltshire, but not the first in the country. I have 4 or 5 young people picked from the 3 Cadet Forces, assigned to me as L-L Cadets each year. They accompany me on lots of trips and are always present at Royal visits. They appear in full uniform, outsmart us all and are a credit to young people today. They would carry the male L-L’s sword, in churches for example, but I do not ask them to carry my handbag! They often ask me what they should do on an engagement. I suggest that they should salute anyone and everyone at every opportunity, and if possible, find me a cup of tea. I work with the High Sheriff - an even older title than the Lieutenancy, from the 1200s, which is an annual post and whose main duty is to care for the Judiciary. I also have a Vice Lord- Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants to help me, to whom I am most grateful. I thoroughly enjoy my post and am honoured indeed to be the Lord-Lieutenant of this wonderful county of ours.” Sarah Troughton, Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire

Farewell to our Mayor
At our Mayor Making ceremony on 13 May, Cllr Lisa Farrell passes the mayoral role to her successor. The last year has been busy for our First Citizen who has really put the community at the top of her list of priorities. She has visited schools and care homes, opened local shops and craft fairs, made presentations to local voluntary groups, attended charity concerts, switched on the Christmas lights, cheered on the BBC Children in Need Rickshaw Challenge and so much more.

She also heads up the Community Speed Watch scheme and gathered evidence to help improve highway safety on the London Road as well as lending support to speed restrictions on the A346. Priory Gardens showing how townspeople lived and worked which will be open between 11am-5pm each day. Plenty to learn, plenty to see and all free.
Our Litter Heroes She has raised funds for her chosen seven charities, supported local people looking for affordable housing and engaged with others who feel excluded from the mainstream. A Mayor who listens and likes to be at the heart of her community, working hard to help those who need it the most. Mayor Lisa - thank you.
Civil War Re-enactment Close to her heart is her work with young people and this year she has re-launched the Marlborough Youth Council and established a new forum with heads of local schools where local issues can be discussed. She continues to work with young people at the Community & Youth Centre - a building she successfully campaigned hard to bring over to the Town Council. She spearheaded, with fellow Councillors, an upgrade of the play area at Coopers Meadow which she opened in November 2018. Keeping our community safe, particularly the vulnerable, has been hugely important and our Mayor has accompanied

More than 50 volunteers took part - Councillors, local Police Officers and PCSOs, ARK and Marlborough in Bloom volunteers, students from Marlborough College, members of the Youth Council, staff from Rick Stein and residents. Lots of litter was collected from right across the town – the High Street and Priory Gardens, Manton, College Fields and Barton Park, Rabley Wood, St Margaret’s Mead, Salisbury Road and the Recreation Ground. It’s hoped that litter picks become a regular monthly event. If you would be interested in volunteering for this, please contact, Clare Harris, our Assistant Town Clerk at the Council Offices.

Lifestyle
24 hours in A and E Being at a loss about what to write for this month’s article, I was strangely delighted when the idea arose out of misfortune. A Sunday morning rugby match accident on Marlborough Common led us to a visit to Swindon’s Great Western Hospital Accident and Emergency Department. The joy of having a child means that we managed to dodge the heaving adult waiting room full of footballing Dads and over zealous DIY’ers, instead, being led through to Paediatric A and E. Triage over in a flash and pain medication administered, we then spent several noisy hours in the children’s waiting area. Too old to play with the little trains and building blocks, our filthy dirty hulking fifteen year old settled in with the toddlers thanking his lucky stars that he had his mobile phone and headphones with him to ease the “pain”. It was then time for one of my favourite hobbies – a little bit of people watching. Of course, everyone in the room was concerned for their own little treasure, but we soon all settled into a pattern of knowing, sympathetic smiles and nods with each other. We were joined, over the course of the wait, by several other sporting boys, their dirty kits displaying who they played for, whilst they clutched various limbs and looked a little worse for wear. The toddlers, meanwhile, reminded me of the well known Calopl advert. However poorly they looked when they came in, all they wanted to do was to play with the toys. Mums and Dads were soon in hot pursuit of flushed little people wrapped in blankets wriggling around or toddling off to the exciting toys set out for them. Keeping them still and warm was a challenge. Even the child friendly screens that some quick thinking parents had brought with them had little charm over the toys. As each child was triaged and returned to the waiting room, we soon settled in and realised that we were there for the long haul, whilst the more poorly children were treated in priority. Small food packages emerged. The odd “emergency” muesli bar from the car, or hastily grabbed packs of biscuits and crisps. Some even turned to the hospital machines
14
for a sandwich or crisps, even the odd bar of chocolate. Either way, the healthy diet went down the pan for another day. Texts to family and friends to update and the odd “can you look after the dogs please?” were dispatched. A quick picture of the teenager’s war wound to send to his mates and Sunday life on hold whilst we waited. The well intentioned Sunday roast waiting to be prepped in the fridge at home. The registrar treating our son was brilliant. It wasn’t pleasant for our boy, but, seven stitches later, he was ready to go home. We were exhausted. We had only been there three and a half hours. Goodness only knows how long our nurse and our Doctor were on duty. People came and went, the cycle repeating itself, life before us in that little room. I don’t know how many nurses were there that day, or how many doctors, but hats off to them for doing such a fantastic job. They managed to calmly juggle the numerous needs of little (and some slightly bigger) patients and families, always with a smile. I have no idea how they prioritised cuts, bruises, coughs and fevers, but they did with the utmost care and slowly and surely we were all seen. A huge thankyou to the hospital staff. You do a wonderful job and we are truly grateful. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. Organisation
Organising in the USA I have recently returned from a fantastic 10 days in Texas. I went there primarily for the NAPO (National Association of Productivity and Organization (US spelling!)) annual conference which was an amazing gathering of some of the most organised people in the world! My first evening there was spent having dinner with organisers from Australia, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden, UK and of course USA. My visit also allowed me to spend some time with an old school friend who lives in Austin – a very cool city. One evening she was saying how she was a bit worried about the cleaning of her Airbnb cottage whilst she was away and if it would be up to standard. Reviews for Airbnb owners are critical and any whiff of a suggestion that something is dirty is not good. It is a lovely little space, beautifully decorated and includes her own art (if you want to see the fabulous stuff she does have a look at her website: www.lucymacqueen.com). I suggested she write a cleaning process to leave for anyone to follow, which she thought was a brilliant idea.
So, on change over morning we got to work – cleaning and then me recording her process of how she liked things done. We documented a 45-step procedure – which Lucy said was really surprising. She also thought this was going to be fantastically useful and made her feel much more confident delegating the task. She wants to expand it for a whole manual for the house. I asked her if she minded if I shared the story and I have included a snippet of what we did. One of the things which was highlighted at the conference was how an ‘Operations Manual’ for your home – something I have done for several clients – can help things run more smoothly and save masses of time. Whether you are juggling a busy family or have carers working with you in your home, the effort is well worth it. In Lucy’s case it will help her to maintain her 5-star super host status! Vet’s Column
Why should I vaccinate my dog? Vaccines have been around since the 19th century and have improved the health and well-being of both people and animals by decreasing the occurrence of many common, debilitating, and fatal diseases. When your dogs are vaccinated, they’re exposed to a harmless version of the virus or bacteria that is responsible for the disease. By doing that, they will develop a memory of that agent, and also a memory of an effective immune response against it. This means that if your dogs are exposed to that virus or bacteria, their immune system will be able to recognise them and will be prepared to fight them off promptly, without your pets having to go through the whole process of disease. Vaccines can be divided into two groups according to their relevance: core vaccines if they protect your pets from severe, lifethreatening diseases caused by agents that have a widespread distribution; and non-core vaccines, which are recommended for pets whose environment or lifestyle places them at risk of getting specific infections. Core vaccines are usually recommended to all dogs, protecting them from: Distemper Distemper is a severe viral disease that affects multiple body systems, leaving your dog very debilitated. It can be characterised by 3 stages - a respiratory phase, a gastrointestinal phase and a neurological phase. However, this disease can be unpredictable as you can see your dog go through all phases or you can only catch clinical signs of a specific phase. Neurologic signs such as tremors, behavioural changes, seizures, limb weakness and incoordination are the most severe and can also persist even if your dog survives the infection. Parvovirus Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that usually has a fatal outcome in puppies. The virus causes bloody diarrhoea and other signs of gastrointestinal illness such as weakness, depression, fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, and dehydration.
28
Infectious Canine Hepatitis This disease is caused by canine adenovirus, and it causes liver problems (hepatitis), digestive issues and, in severe cases, bleeding disorders. It is also known as blue eye disease as dogs sometimes look like they have a blue eye as a consequence of eye inflammation. Leptospirosis Leptospirosis is a cause of serious illness, not only in dogs but also in people, as it causes significant damage to the liver and kidneys and can culminate in organ failure. Unlike the three previous diseases that we just covered, there is specific treatment targeted at the bacteria that causes leptospirosis. However, the disease can still be fatal. What do all these diseases have in common? • They can result in severe, often fatal, illness in puppies, debilitated and unprotected dogs; • Most importantly, they’re all preventable through vaccination. As for non-core vaccinations, these can be recommended to some dogs in specific situations. For example, if your dogs are travelling, they will be required to be vaccinated against rabies; and if they’re going to be boarded, it’s highly likely that they have to get a kennel cough vaccine. It’s important to keep in mind that vaccination was and is a significant contributor to disease control, making diseases that were once devastating and common rare in the UK. If you’d like to know more about protecting your dogs through vaccination, don’t hesitate to speak to your vet! Drove Vets
