SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AT THE FORE Dear Ladies, With the on-going economic crisis as one of the current challenges for businesses, it would be easy to relegate corporate social responsibility and associated staff motivation programmes into the “not business-critical” category. Yet, despite the recession, as firms recognise the link between staff volunteering, employee engagement, and healthy business results, corporate social responsibility and staff engagement are viewed as hugely important to a business’s health. This is not a surprising fact since various recent studies show that “committing to a meaningful purpose” is one of the most important factors in people’s intrinsic motivation. Even when looking at a small example, such as IPWIN’s last workshop (New Year’s Resolutions), we found that among our attendees women with a strong sense of social responsibility who spend a large amount of their free time for contributing to a better world. To give just two examples: Madeleine coordinates a program offering Adult Education Scholarships to refugees and asylum seekers in Istanbul and Nancy is working with the volunteers of Beykoz Barinak. Here she does two types of work, she networks with agencies in the US to place disabled animals and she also fosters, rehabilitates, and trains animals herself so they end up in ‘forever’ homes. In addition, Nancy has tried to develop student awareness on the campus where she teaches regarding handicapped animals… creating carts in the engineering department so paralyzed dogs can walk and so on. If anyone would like to support her she can be reached at karabeyoglu@sabanciuniv.edu.
Lavinia Ganga
Since one’s meaning in life and making a valuable contribution is one of the key motivational drivers, there is no wonder that so many foreign women in Istanbul join IWI . A huge thank you to all IWI volunteers who not only add so much value to the expat life in Istanbul but put lots of effort into charity work. We, the IPWIN coordinators, are grateful that the IPWIN guest speakers continue to keep our monthly discussions so professional, so fresh and so interesting. Consequently, the IPWIN First Wednesdays are very successful. Furthermore, for the upcoming season we are seeking motivated women who would like to be part of the IPWIN team. This is your opportunity to grow with the new challenging task and to be proud as a part of a very engaged, energetic and successful team. We wish you all a successful contribution to the social projects you care passionately about and to all our world.

NCM VISIT TO THE ISTANBUL 1453
PANORAMA MUSEUM
A
t the beginning of this year we visited the Istanbul 1453 Panorama Museum, which houses the panorama painting (a 360 degree painting) of the conquest of Constantinople. It is displayed on a series of boards with paintings on the wall accompanied by Turkish text, which explains what you see and subsequently, the events that unfolded. You can rent an audioguide for a small fee so you can follow the pictures in your own language, which was appreciated by all. This museum was opened in 2009. Here you can witness an important moment in history, the fall of Constantinople; it was this event that gave Sultan Mehmet II his title of Fatih (the Conqueror).
The fighting was very fierce. You can see the scene of the storming of the breach in the walls. You can also see and hear the famous cannons of the Ottoman army. There is a clear depiction of the attack from a siege tower and a Turkish soldier waving with the Turkish flag on another tower. The battle cry of Sultan Mehmed II’s soldiers and the sound of the marches will surround you. The visual display and accompanying sound effects really brought the events to life. Simply amazing. Maybe studying all the pictures on the walls is too much for one visit, so if you prepare yourself a little bit on the background of the fall of Constantinpole through a simple internet search, to understand a more of the history, you can look more specifically at those pictures depicting the events that interest you the most. To get there, take the tram in KabataĹ&#x; towards Bagcilar, and get off at the Topkapi station, just outside the city walls. We had a fun and educational trip, with the chance to get to know more members from our neighbourhood. I hope many of you will visit this museum, so you will really feel the history while living in Istanbul. Jos van Meel (credit for photos)

Çtheiyasunny Sofrasi on the street of garden -Kadıöy I
t is with excitement that we board the ferry from Beşiktaş to Kadiköy. I read that the New York Times had a spectacular review of the restaurant that we are on our way to and if the New York Times says good things about a restaurant in a far off city like Istanbul, then it must be good. A 5 minute walk from the Ferry port of Kadiköy, we enter Çiya Sofrasi. It means 'The Çiya Diner Table'. It is located in a small unassuming storefront on a street called Güneşlibaçhe Sokak, translated beautifully as 'Street of the Sunny Garden'. I must say I walked in with a hungry stomach and was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of tantalizing dishes displayed behind the hot and cold counters, but as we sat down the waiters put a variety of mezzes in front of us. No worry about making a decision of what dish looks the best. We could try everything! I was pleasantly surprised with the offering of so many dishes ranging from a variety of salads, dips and cheese to about eight hot dishes. The food was colourful and exciting and a feast for the eyes and comfort to my stomach.
8
Desserts were equally remarkable and included Candied Olives and Candied Walnuts served with sweet clotted cream. Çiya is the brainchild of Mr Musa Dagdeviren, who with a passion and love of food opened his restaurant in the Asian district of Kadiköy. The food is wonderful and well presented in an unpretentious setting with excellent, friendly service. Thank you to Ayse for organizing this amazing lunch and thank you to all the other IWI women that I met on that lunch at Çiya Sofrasi. The good company made the meal extra special. I do hope to see you soon for more good food...and maybe some Turkish wine too. A Taste of Sri Lanka with Kuraishini Harsh
S
ri Lankan cuisine is one of the most complex of South Asia, with its own distinct flavours. Renowned for its spices, the nation’s main cuisine consist of boiled or steamed rice served with curry and side dishes such as pickles and chutneys. Our first Sri Lankan cooking demo was a wonderful success. It was enjoyed by all who attended at the house of Kuraishini. After the education class and delicious meal we were given little bags of Sri Lankan spices by our hostess Kuraishini which gave us the enthusiasm to go home and try to recreate the dishes for our families. Kuraishini showed us how to make the following delicious dishes:

2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Place apples, dates and soda in a bowl. Pour over boiling water. Allow to stand until cool. Beat butter and sugar together in another bowl until thick and creamy. Blend in egg and vanilla. Fold flour and apple mixture (including all the juice) alternately into creamed mixture. Spread into a greased and lined 23cm springform tin. Bake in a moderate oven (180ºC) for 45 minutes. To prepare topping: place butter, sugar, coconut and milk in a small saucepan. heat, stirring, until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved Remove cake from oven. Spread topping evenly over the top of cake. Bake for a further 15 minutes or until topping is golden and a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool completely in the tin. Carefully remove sides of the tin. Transfer cake to a serving plate.
When I line a springform tin, I just tear off a rectangle of baking paper, place it over the base and clip the sides to the tin, keeping it in place. Then when I come to put the cake onto a serving dish, I use the paper to ease it onto the plate- get one corner and fold under then keep removing paper as cake goes onto plate if you kind of know what I mean! It is a great cake and I have been making it for years and everyone loves it!
Enjoy!
I love the fact I can make it ahead, freeze it and serve it as a dessert for a dinner party. I serve it warmed with a blob of kaymak, delicious!!

YOUR FORTUNE IN A COFFEE CUP
ZUMBA FITNESS
Living in Turkey and not having your fortune told through a cup of coffee is like visiting London and not seeing the Big Ben, or being in New York and not visiting the Statue of Liberty or…. well you get the drift! Coffee reading is a centuries old ritual in Turkey . Coffee readers use Turkish coffee or any method of coffee brewing that leaves grounds sitting at the bottom of the cup. Most of the coffee in the cup is consumed but the sediment is left to settle and it is the sediment remaining on the bottom of the cup that is used in the reading Deniz Ilkin is not your average coffee reader nor a professional one. She has a Masters in Psychological Assessments from London University but she discovered early in her teens that she had a gift for reading coffee. She believes that coffee reading is about being connected to your sixth sense. Many a time she has found herself talking to her friends without even needing to look much at the Turkish coffee cup. In the last one and a half years she has read coffee for many acquaintances and friends and has been overwhelmed by the feedback. We are still in the early months of 2013, so now is the time to have your cup of coffee with Deniz and find out what interesting things the years ahead have in store for you.
The freshness in the air reminds us of the commencement of the bright and sunny days. It’s time to stop dreaming about those chiseled bodies that look so awesome and get moving! So ladies get your gym attire and get ready for an exhilarating Zumba session to burn those crazy calories dancing away!! An exclusive demo of Zumba fitness is being designed for IWI members .

JOURNEY WITH TURKISH WINES
SPECIAL TALK ON THE LEGENDS OF ISTANBUL
Vinolus Chardonnay, Doluca Serafin Sauvignon Blanc, Kavaklıdere, Pendore…. Have you ever looked at the wine shelves in the shops in Istanbul and thought that you have no idea which wine to buy or what it will taste like?
Ever wondered who founded this great city? What about the maze of tunnels under the city? Come and join us to hear the tales of the Maiden’s Tower, the formation of Bosphorus and many more legends about this remarkable and mystifying city! Cem Aydoğdu has over 25 years of experience in nomadic textiles both as a collector and a merchant. He has been a student of Sufi mysticism for 20 years. He will be exploring the myths and legends that surround us in this 3,000 year old city, many of which locals are not even aware of. This talk conducted last year, is back by popular demand. So don’t let this chance get away!
To help you find the answers to these tough questions, the IWI is organizing a few wine tasting sessions in collaboration with many of the wineries in Turkey. They will let us taste the wine and with this teach us a bit about Turkish wines. If the tasting proves popular it may become a regular monthly program! Our wine tasting this month is with Suvla Winery. The vineyards are located on the historic Gallipoli peninsula and they make their wines as natural as possible with no additives which guarantee no headaches. Handy if you want an excuse to indulge! Suvla’s motto is: Wine is Life! This free tasting is in the Suvla Wine shop and will also give you a chance to browse around their selection of wines, glassware and their own range of organic olive oil, olives and jams. Date

IWI HEALTH SERIES – TALK ON BACH FLOWERS
WALKING TOUR OF ÜSKÜDAR
In happy and peaceful periods of our lives we usually do not encounter health issues. At such times, we enjoy life and reflect our joy to our family and friends. However, sometimes this may not be the case. At such times, we need a little something to assist us in balancing our emotional state and to continue our daily life without losing our motivation. That’s what the original Bach Flower Drops are for… vitamins for the soul! Bach Flowers have a harmonizing and reintegrating influence on our bodies. They support the human body gently helping us to stay balanced and heed our internal voice, our intuition. Bach Flowers promote an individual’s growth and development. You can use it in acute crises, or to overcome special weaknesses of character or as a support to any other medical therapy. It also helps to overcome depression, fears, feelings of loneliness, desperation, panic etc. It’s also useful for children in cases of hyperactivity, stutter, weakness of concentration and many other problems. Herlinde Hafner was born in Austria in 1962. She became familiar with Bach Flowers in 1982 during a stay in England. After working extensively with women and youth in Austria she moved to Turkey, whose land, people and language she has come to know and love over the last nine years. After settling in Turkey she has also pursued ceramic sculpture, Reiki, Prana healing and yoga and Bach Flowers has always there in her luggage. As a result of her interest in alternative healing methods and with the enthusiastic encouragement of her husband and friends, she decided to share the natural gift of Bach Flowers with others. She completed Bach Flowers consultancy training in Austria in 2009 and has been advising clients in Istanbul since then.
The conservative district of Üsküdar is located on the Asian side of the Bosporus. In the 7th century BC, Greek colonists from nearby Chalcedon established a new settlement called Chrysopolis, the city of gold. There are many speculations regarding the reasons for this name and the two most plausible are that gold was used as currency in this strategic harbour, or that the settlement had a golden glow at sunset. The city was also an important stopover during the wars fought between the Persians and Greek city–states, which took place in the 5th century BC. During the late Byzantine period, it was one of the three suburbs of Constantinople (along with Galata and Eyüp) and was known as Scutari.

PICNIC IN EMIRGAN PARK
OUR CONTINUING JOURNEY WITH TURKISH WINES…..
It’s April, it’s Spring time and the tulips are in full bloom all around the city. The IWI invites you to a picnic amidst the tulips in Emirgan Park. Emirgan Park is closely associated with the tulip, the traditional flower, which gave its name to an era (1718-1730) of the Ottoman Empire. A special garden was established in Emirgan Park in the 1960s to revive the city’s tradition of tulip cultivation. Since 2005, the city of Istanbul organizes an annual international tulip festival and Emirgan Park is the best location to enjoy the beauty of this festival. So pack your hats and sunglasses, prepare a picnic bag and bring a dish of your choice to munch on and to share! If you are bringing a dish that you would like to share with the rest of the group, please inform Ayşe of your choice at aysegurleryucel@gmail.com
As part of our on-going endeavour to get acquainted with Turkish wines, this month we taste Yazgan Wines. Yazgan Vinifacation is a family run winery, in Pınarbaşı,,Izmir, close to the Aegean coast.

The tasting will be in one of the new wineshops in Istanbul, ‘Incirli Şaraphane’ wineshop in Kuruçeşme, next to Arnavutköy. Şaraphane means winehouse and the shop gets its name from the massive fig tree in the garden. This wineshop, has a wonderful selection of Turkish wines. The tasting will be hosted in a private tasting room and while you sip your wine, you can enjoy listening to the interesting history of the Yazgan family. CARPET TOUR IN SULTANAHMET
STYLE & COLOUR MORNING - WITH HOUSE OF COLOUR CONSULTANT IKBAL OAKLEY
After a wonderful session on the symbolism and history of kilims in December, Cem Aydoğlu is back as promised with a special carpet tour in Sultanahmet. At the kilim talk, Cem gave us valuable advice on finding out the quality of carpets and, more importantly, on the right pricing for the right carpet. He will be checking whether the earlier participants learned their lesson well! So come prepared for discovering, chatting and bargaining , all set against a background of colorful carpets and chai! And who knows you may find the perfect carpet made just for you!
Is 80% of your wardrobe not being used and you have nothing to wear in the morning? The reason is, when clothes shopping, our decision making process is being affected by fashion, shop assistants, and the personal choices of our friends. Later we instinctively find out what we bought does not reflect “who we are”. However, we can develop that instinct to make the right choices in the first place. House of Colour courses and consultancy focuses on three important factors related to each individual… Colour : colours matching your skin tone is the first step to making wise shopping choices. The right colours will make you look younger, more energetic, and more approachable. Body Shape: dressing suitable to your body shape will improve your posture, help you to feel comfortable in the clothes resulting in you looking good. Personality : Emphasizing your personality with your clothes will help you to reflect emotionally the most important message “who you are” Let the House of Colour experience change
your wardrobe and your life! Ikbal Oakley represents leading British professional image consultancy company House of Colours in Turkey. She lives in Kemer Country and works from her studio in Kemer. Chess: A game? A sport? An art form?
C
hess has been one of the most respected games all over the world for the last six centuries, but is this just a game, or is there something more in it to attract the minds of millions?
I have been playing chess since I was 5. It started as a very mystical game for me. As a small girl I would look at the board and see two armies facing each other, black and white. There were smaller soldiers and higher commanders on that black and white battlefield. After all, I was the main commander; formulating a good strategy, trying to find the best move, delivering the best choice, all these ideas would occupy my mind during the playing hours. “If I make a good plan, deliver a strong threat, I will win” - this is what I thought at the beginning. Alas, I was wrong. My opponent, the commander of the other army, had his own threats, thus he prevented me from bringing my plan into life and he had his own ideas on how to win the fight over the chessboard. That was the moment I understood something important: I had to foresee the future in some way, I had to see one step ahead of my opponent. And this is how my first steps into my chess career started. Chess was no longer a game to me. It would rather be a competition, a fight of minds, ideas, thoughts and preparation. Competition means sport. Tournaments, preparation and continuous work on chess became part of my life. Very early in my life, I became a sportsman. Playing in many tournaments, sometimes winning them, sometimes coming second or third, sometimes
22
having bad results...Chess toughened my character and taught me not only how to win but even more importantly, how to deal with losses and difficult moments. Just as in any other sport, the result would depend only on my own work, preparation, concentration and discipline both before and during the tournaments. Just as in any other sport, good preparation would diminish the role of luck. After many years of competing, I also started to teach chess, and this opened new perspectives for me. As a teacher and an active player, I can’t stop admiring chess. I now look at chess from another angle compared to that of my youth. A beautiful combination, a mysterious study or a fine game, it brings me a great deal of aesthetic pleasure. The same can be said when I see the spark in the eyes or in the fascinated faces of children watching black or white armies sacrificing half of their soldiers and giving checkmate to their opponent’s king. I wonder myself if chess is something more than a game or a sport. Maybe it is an art, because only art can bring about these emotions within people. Thus chess is an art that keeps minds amazed and generates in us the joy of being part of it: Chess can be equally shared and enjoyed by young and old, like any other form of art. So after all these years, with huge experience in the field of chess, I still cannot answer the main question: Is chess a game? A sport? An art form? Or is it a combination of all these three? Dear readers - play chess, join the IWI chess club and you will find your own answer!

ADD aims to improve the socio-economic means and preserve the skills of young women living in Van who were forced to migrate from their villages and who continue to adhere to the cultural and traditional techniques of kilim weaving. Last season, the IWI generously contributed funds for the construction of one kilim weaving workshop in Van. The workshop was opened in December of 2012 and IWI members were invited for the opening ceremony. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, the ceremony was cancelled and HADD is now planning a trip to Van in April or May. For any IWI members interested in visiting, more details will be available soon through the IWI Charity Coordinator, Nilgun. The upcoming trip to Eastern Turkey will be a chance for participants to see the kilim weaving workshops in action, meet the girls and also to explore the beautiful area of Van. The pictures shown are those of the workshop and at the entrance to the workshop the IWI name is on display as a thank you for our generous donation.

or our first IPWIN event in December, the First Wednesday of the month, we talked about “How to Reach your Target Customers”. Our guest speaker was Semiha Ünal, Managing Director of an international business management firm in Istanbul, and a real expert in finding Turkish business partners for foreign companies. During this well attended event she shared very valuable insights with us about how to attract more customers, how to significantly increase the awareness of your company and how to find the right place for advertising to the desired customers. The New Year is that time of the year when many people make resolutions and look forward to a fresh start in the coming year, which provides motivation as you embark on new challenges. So how can 2013 be the year in which you really accomplish your resolutions and plans successfully? During our first workshop for 2013 “New Year’s Resolutions” we looked at the right techniques for setting goals, broke our personal goals into small steps, opened up to new perspectives and learned how to deal with set-backs. Together we talked about the relevant paths for our resolutions in 2013, how to actively pursue these and how to raise our motivation whether in our private life or in our career. Not only did we exchange contact details for follow-ups but also had lots of laughs! On February 6th we learned about how to “Start Healthy into the New Year - Nutritional Therapy”. Marlene Bronte, a Nutritional Therapist was our guest speaker. She shared her expertise on good dietary habits and how they can improve our health, energy and vitality by encouraging the body to heal and nourish itself. She also touched on detoxification and explained how the body shows you when it is time to detoxify. This was originally our scheduled January event which was unfortunately cancelled due to weather conditions.

TANTRA - UNRAVELLING THE ENIGMA
This is the story of how I swapped my corporate job and life in London for a backpacking journey through South East Asia. This, in turn, led to a life-changing encounter with a traditionally educated spiritual teacher in India and my introduction to the Tantric Yoga system. I have since been both cured of an arthritis condition and inspired by this life-applicable system. This amazing yet misperceived ancient Indian spirituality, and its relevance to both my German-Christian and Turkish-Muslim heritage, sustains my enthusiasm in further studying and sharing this wholesome life culture. „Tantra is an ancient Indian spirituality, which considers all aspects of yourself. Tantric practices integrated sub-conscious relaxation, eliminating stress and anxieties, facilitating you to live your life to its full potential, whilst illuminating the pathway to Kāma (bliss) & ultimately Mokşa (freedom)“ About three years ago, I was at the peak of my professional career within a London market research firm, living the life I had worked for and sought. Yet I felt stagnant in my corporate development and estranged from my environment. My city lifestyle, relationship turbulences, my father’s terminal illness and my own complicated health conditions had taken a strong toll on me. I got hold of a book entitled ‘The Power of Unreasonable People’ by John Elkington, which encouraged me to start an online degree in Sustainable Development. By definition, Sustainable Development
28
is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Report). I was certain that my future would evolve around social entrepreneurship and that my contribution would bring about some kind of environmental, economic or social change. Little did I know back then how relevant my Tantric studies would become. For two years several conventional doctors had treated the socalled “reactive arthritis” in my knees with cortico-steroids and methotrexate, a strong immune suppressant with many severe side effects. Dissatisfied with the outcome and implications, I decided to make some significant personal changes to overcome my reluctance to taking risks. So, I quit my job without securing an after plan or income. Liberated, I left Europe to travel for three months throughout Thailand, Indonesia and lastly India, indulging in different cultures, new adventures and spontaneous opportunities. When I arrived at a Yoga School in Southern India, my travelling came to a stop but my journey continued even more internally. What was initially meant to be a one-month Yoga Teacher Program, led to an extended Tantric Initiation. I remember that when I arrived, I looked at everything from within the cultural framework in which I had grown up, but quickly realised that if I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of myself, the world, and the traditional knowledge taught in this yoga system, I would have to let go of certain thought constructs and open up to a more holistic view of life. This was especially relevant in relation to the knee inflammation

I was suffering from. Even though I was on prescription drugs, I still had flare-ups, which perplexed doctors and myself, leading me to further question the effectiveness of conventional approaches. What impressed me most at this yoga school was the integrated system of yoga, breathing and meditation and most certainly the vast knowledge of the spiritual teacher, Bhagavan Shanmukha Anantha Natha. With over 40 years of teaching experience, he has conducted his own studies on historical contexts, psychology, yoga, its philosophy and science, accessible through two published books. As a teenager he was already respected as gifted and fortunate in his awareness. His passion for reading, conveying and preserving Vedic texts, combined with his genuine nature, make listening to and learning from him a true pleasure. The teachings resonated with my inner values and curiosity about faith, religion and traditions - things which I have always been interested in and frequently frustrated about during my upbringing in a multi-cultural environment in Northern Germany.
information I have ever encountered. Its concepts are ancient and thus timelessly applicable to every aspect of life. In fact, sustainable development is intrinsic to the Tantric concept of Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Mokṣa, which is about expressing your true nature to its full potential, to live by love and celebrate life. This translates into a sustainable integration based on a healthy understanding of the world we live in, and so educating and sharing this knowledge can truly impact and bring about transformation and a natural sense of social responsibility in each one of us.
I realised the significance of these Tantric teachings by experiencing its positive impact in all aspects of my life, in relationship to my family and friends, to myself, and my health. Within the first six months of my program I was able to gradually decrease and finally stop taking the drug for my knee condition. Whilst practising yoga on a daily basis, I dropped any limiting conditionings and established a more wholesome identity. I have not had a recurrence of the inflammatory condition since then, and my personal yoga practice continues to maintain my holistic lifestyle today.
I feel privileged to have met a traditional teacher who grew up in a Tantric environment, able and willing to convey the Shiva-Shakta tradition and philosophy in order that we can build our lives with a true sense of personal freedom.
Of all my academic studies, educational courses and activities, this Tantric yoga system provides the most valuable and precious

Understanding and integrating these spiritual principles into my own life is continually enriching me; I am more balanced, healthy and in tune with myself, subsequently positively affecting interactions with my environment.
Since early 2011, I divide my time between India, Turkey and Europe, studying all aspects of Tantra Yoga. I am sharing my inspiration and experience, which complements my life and makes me, quite simply, happy.

Learning something of her journey to this position will hopefully provide inspiration in our own lives. Elisabetta Igmen was born in Subiaco, Italy, a medieval town neighbouring the historical and spiritual city of Rome. With a father who was an interior designer and grandfather a tailor, Elisabetta’s life was filled with creativity from the beginning. Despite this, determined to make her own way, Eli chose to study Linguistics and Literature at the University of Rome, building a career as a highly sought after translator. Having met her husband on a short trip to Istanbul with friends, Eli moved to the city 20 years ago and credits the it with providing much of her inspiration, for life, jewelry and much more.
30
A few years ago, Eli seemed to undergo a gradual transformation, a shift in her life that was at a point of change. ‘Sometimes you need to change things; some don’t understand when they need to change… but everyone can do it’. Having always translated from English into Italian, Eli decided to begin translating from Turkish to Italian, something she had been almost afraid to try up until this point. ‘I felt confident and ready to do it and it was the same with the jewelry.’
‘I have always been interested in fashion and beautiful things, and in Istanbul it was so easy to find inspiration.’ Elieli Gioelli, Eli’s creation, consists of multiple collections of beautiful jewelry that each communicate a clear message and purpose. What started only recently as little more than a hobby has become a successful and sought after brand. But hearing more of Elisabetta’s story, it seems perhaps it was always growing and developing under the surface with a certain inevitability.
Having always made pieces of jewelry for herself, friends and acquaintances continually complimented her on the pieces she wore and convinced her she possessed a talent that was being neglected. Tentatively designing her first collection 4 years ago, at the same time she changed the direction of her translation work, things seemed to take off rapidly. With the encouragement and support of friends and contacts Eli soon found herself doing multiple features and interviews in high profile magazines, twice with Cosmopolitan and Maison Francais, as well as Marie Claire, TAV Newsport and Sabah newspaper. A neighbor who loved Eli’s jewelry knew someone working as a dresser on the famous Turkish television show, ‘Așk-ıMemnu’ and encouraged her to send them her jewelry to be worn on the show. Dismissing the idea with ‘Why would they want my jewelry?’ she was shocked to find the very same dresser knocking her door asking if she would be generous enough to allow them to use her jewelry. Eli’s pieces ended up being worn by the 3 main female characters multiple times. Under similar circumstances the famous actress Merve Boluğur ended up wearing some Elieli Gioelli jewelry in the famous show, Kuzey Güney . ‘I was really fainting when I saw it on TV, she wore so many different ones!’ Shortly after she was approached by a television company wishing to interview her. Eli confessed she was ‘terrified’ to speak in Turkish on TV; ‘to see myself speak Turkish [on the program] was strange, but my husband was very proud.’
MARCH|APRIL 2013
LALE Features I can explain the meaning of the pieces to people…but the commercial side, marketing and selling I find very hard.’ Though it seems that this has not held the company back. The organic nature of the brand’s development and promotion through magazine features, TV shows and word of mouth - perhaps better suits the ethos of Eli’s beautiful creations.
It seems Eli is an entrepreneur at her core, demonstrated in both the career paths she has chosen. A majority of her working life she has been a freelance translator and now finds herself running her own jewelry business along side. Agreeing it is far more risky to have your own business she admits, ‘I prefer to do things by myself, I want to be on my own.’ Though of course whatever you do, you cannot work in isolation. With Elieli Gioelli ‘I have created something but I need to work with the right people for it to be realized.’ Of the atelier Eli works with to make her jewelry she says, ‘I love to stay with them [whilst the jewelry is created], I love to learn from them. Now I know a good stone, the right quality of materials, but sometimes
‘I prefer to define the terrible traffic and some lack of organization as ‘misunderstandings of my foreign mentality”’ I still need help choosing, I cannot always understand what is right.’ This is true to life as much as to work, whether you have your own business or work for someone else – creating an environment in which you will thrive, making sure you understand the value of those around you and the need for their input. After all, none of us are good at everything and can always benefit from the knowledge and experience of others.
Each collection is celebrated, once complete, with a party for Eli’s friends and contacts at her studio in Nistantisi and the rest develops from there. I myself had the pleasure of being introduced to Eli and her work through a friend visiting her studio to buy some jewelry, herself introduced by a friend in the Italian community. When returning to interview Eli, I bumped into the same friend with a small group of women who she had brought along to show Eli’s work. This way of allowing the brand to speak for itself, means the stories and meaning behind the collections can be honestly communicated and appreciated. And it seems to be working!
‘In my sleep, I first see shapes and forms, then I put them into words… finally I feel an urgent need to write down and sketch these dreams…’
There are numerous parallels in many aspects of Eli’s jewelry business and her career as a translator, which she continues to pursue. Having decided to start translating from Turkish to Italian Eli was introduced to the famous Turkish author, Zülfü Livaneli, who was looking for ‘someone special’ to translate his novel, ‘Serenad’ into Italian. When they met they got on immediately, with a natural appreciation for one another both personally and professionally. Eli’s linguistic and cultural appreciation of Turkey, as well as her natural understanding of Italy, allowed her to translate Livaneli’s work in a way that lead the wife of a famous writer to whom Livaneli had sent her sample translation, to comment, ‘it is exactly the same feeling she leaves’ when reading her translation. As with each of Eli’s jewelry collections, the communication of the message and the feeling this transmits to the reader or wearer, is essential to its true appreciation.
The commercial side of the business, marketing her creations as products and Elieli Gioelli as a brand, is where Eli finds herself most challenged as yet. ‘[My] problem is not creativity and production,

espite the demands of continuing to work in both areas, Eli enjoys having both careers, ‘One helps the other. They are very different but complimentary and there is still much creativity in translation.’ The translation work provides the intellectual stimulation and affords the opportunity to meet with interesting people, discussing important issues. Eli describes the jewelry business as predominantly ‘fun’, though equally important. ‘Women like to be happy, for the meaning of anything in life the most important thing is happiness and for this reason, decoration is important.’ Much of the inspiration for each collection is drawn from Istanbul, which she describes as her ‘muse’. ‘I have always been interested in fashion and beautiful things and in Istanbul it was so easy to find inspiration…I love this city. I love to walk in the old districts. People and places are amazing.’ Influences from movies, books and visits to other countries also spark her creativity. The ‘Maya’ collection was the result of recalling a trip to Mexico a long time before and feeling the desire to create something out of this many years later. The 13 Mayan Zodiacal Soul Tones each denote your cosmic energy and by wearing these symbols ‘one invites the possibility of connecting to the energy of your destiny.’ Eli also keeps a small book by her bed to record what she sees whilst dreaming, sometimes beginning in the form of words and other times actual pieces. Of course there is always the fear after one collection is complete that perhaps the next one will not come, perhaps there will be no inspiration this time, ‘but it always comes together’. The variety of each collection is impressive, with a wide range of materials and designs used, something that can be hard to find in one designer. Eli claims her favourite collection is Ekologika, the first ever collection and a source of pride for all the hard work that went into it. Though she is quick to add, that of course her best creation in all her life must be her daughter.
It has also inspired a new project or experiment. Eli has designed 3 different sized pendants in the image of her dog Ciuffo, a West Highland terrier, which can be attached to a dog’s collar or a necklace so it can also be worn by the owner. Eli intends to sell these through various outlets such as vetinary clinics and pet shops with the profits donated to a dog shelter being set up by a close friend. ‘I could have just given money, but this means more than just giving money. I want to be a part of it’ with the hope that this will raise awareness and educate people about the plight of many of the street dogs that we see wandering around the city. These will also be made in a variety of materials, such as wood and silver, to ensure they are affordable, accessible and attract plenty of interest. The Elieli Gioelli brand seems one that is set to continue to grow, with more and more people anticipating each new collection and creation. When asked what advice Eli would give to other women hoping to set up a business here in Istanbul, she was very clear that ‘to speak the language is very important. Turkish people love strangers who speak their language…they respect your effort. Self awareness when working with very different and diverse people who have different behaviours and expectations is essential. Having a sincere intention is a must. I think that a woman can achieve these goals much better than a man!’ It seems the Eli’s success is in large part due to following her talent, embarking on each journey when the time felt right and an abundance of creativity. Hearing her story, seeing the joy and contentment that fulfilling your dreams and potential brings, it is hard not to feel inspired. Reflecting on ourselves, many of us will be familiar with the feeling of wandering if we really are doing everything we can to fulfill out potential, making the most of our opportunities and talents. It is easy to be too afraid, to take the leap and see if an idea or deep rooted desire can become a reality. Here is to hoping more of us will have the confidence to make a change and take a risk, who knows what it may become…
My Istanbul ‘Istanbul is an appealing city and its beauty has a striking effect upon me. I prefer to define the terrible traffic and some lack of organization as “misunderstandings of my foreign mentality”. I have witnessed huge achievements in the city and the people throughout the years. The brightness and energy inside the city is what I prefer to see and feel.’ Favourite place to go shopping: Nișantași and Galata Favourite place in Istanbul: Galata and Sultanahmet Favourite place for a special dinner: Ulus 29 and Mikla Favourite place for casual drinks with friends: Baylo (Beyoğlu) Favourite Turkish dish: Pazı etli dolması Favourite thing about living in Istanbul: to sit somewhere, have a coffee, watch and chat with people and look for a new story Visit www.elieligioelli.com for more information
Social responsibility is also something Eli places considerable value on in her work and has inspired numerous collections. ‘I believe that a company should be responsible for meeting the moral expectations for the community, acting within certain limits and through social duties.’ This sense of responsibility is demonstrated in the use of natural materials in all of Eli’s pieces and the continual references to nature.

ir D’Art, Istanbul
April 13 to April 20, 2013 / Gallery Od’A - Ouvro ‘PASSAGE’ Passage (‘Journey’) is the theme of the 2013 ‘Printemps des Artistes’. Istanbul, a city straddling continents and steeped in a rich and multi-faceted history, perfectly represents this notion of ‘Journey’. Nine local and international artists have been invited to interpret ‘Passage‘ in their own distinct way. The curators of ‘Printemps des Artistes’ invite you to discover how each artist has used their personal style and techniques to interpret this wide-reaching concept.
I
stanbul Accueil (the French-speaking organisation) is proud to present ‘Printemps des Artistes’, its 7th annual art exhibition. Marine Boixiere, the IWI events coordinator whom you may already know, is also very much involved in this exciting project together with two other dynamic French ladies, Catherine Chanut and Caroline Stevens.
36
So come and enjoy this exciting and not-tobe missed cultural event of Istanbul! This will be an unique opportunity to meet an unusual selection of artists and purchase a memorable art piece (or more !) reminding of your ‘journey’ in Turkey. .................................................................... Michel Berthaud, French draughtsman and graphic artist is very much inspired by calligraphy and works with modern techniques to produce beautiful pieces.
This exhibition should not only be a visual treat but also a cultural exchange between artists and visitors, between the Turkish and International communities, and between the artists themselves.
Sevgi Cagal, native Turkish-American sculptor creates stunning bronze sculptures all embodied by womanhood, tenderness, love and life. Her works, beautifully rounded and warm, will conquer you at first glance.
Most importantly, the exhibition is a charity event as it supports the Hospital of Lape, an institution established in 1857 in Istanbul. 30% of the proceeds (from art sales) will indeed go to the Hospital of Lape.

(‘yazmalars’) whilst incorporating a more modern twist. Laurence Neyrolles, French artist and craftswoman expresses her amazing iconographic know-how on old wooden objects. Her paintings are mostly inspired by Istanbul, religious scenes and flora, and the scenes are exquisitely rendered thanks to natural dyes the artist crafts herself. Takayoshi Sakabe, Japanese painter shows his sensitivities via his paintings and his dancing (butoh). His talents are numerous and his works celebrate the ephemeral side of life and give viewers the impression that the subjects treated in his works are about to evaporate. Cemal Toy, Turkish painter captures the colourful imagery of the city through an impressionistic style, and manages
to poetically immortalise Istanbul. The dervish dancers, another of his much-loved subjects, are depicted with utter beauty and energy.
Opening hours: Saturday 13 April to Saturday 20 April from 12pm to 8pm (closed on Sunday 14 April)
Innes Welbourne, Canadian photographer. His photographic works, whether describing a narrative or not, will make you discover a less-known Istanbul and its residents. This up-coming photographer, through his lens, manages to capture an emotion, a way of life.
You will have several opportunities to meet the artists themselves during the exhibition:
Kerim Yetkin, Turkish painter gives an abstract twist to the exhibition. The layers of colours play with each other and expose the energy of the gesture through cuts and scratches. This young talented painter has created works of a raw vibrancy.
Latenight: Thursday 18 April – 6.30pm to 10pm
Merih Yildiz, Turkish painter draws the viewers into his strongly-narrated imagery of life in modern Istanbul treated by this enthusiastic artist with much expressionism and humanity. .....................................................................

The Diet Delusion
T
here are a few trendy high protein low carbohydrate diets that have swept the globe in the past few years. It is the “diet de jour” for most people wanting to shed a few extra kilos. The proponents brag about a diet that boasts of weight loss while eating hearty amounts of fulfilling animal based foods. So what could be wrong about that? This is definitely "too good to be true," and in reality the weight loss that can happen on a high protein low carbohydrate diet is often short lived once the person returns to eating their normal diet. High protein low carbohydrate diets generally are all based on restricting the intake of carbohydrates to a minimal amount. This forces the body into a ketosis metabolic state so that it burns your existing fat instead of consumed carbohydrates to provide the energy the body needs. As a result, your body changes from a carbohydrate-burning engine into a fat-burning engine. By following this type of diet the body gets its energy from tiny carbon fragments that are produced by the breakdown of the body’s fat stores. So essentially, your fat stores become a primary energy source and ta-da, the result is quick weight loss!
40
The problem is that this is not the natural way your body was designed to work and, without an adequate intake of fruits and vegetables, after a while, an unhealthy imbalance of protein, carbs, and fats mean that these types of diet can cause more harm than good if followed for a long time.
High protein, low-carb diets can cause a number of health problems, including: •
Kidney failure. Consuming too much protein puts a strain on the kidneys, which can make a person susceptible to kidney disease.
•
High Cholesterol. It is well known that high-protein diets (consisting of red meat, whole dairy products, and other high fat foods) are linked to high cholesterol. Studies have linked high cholesterol levels to an increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
•
Osteoporosis and kidney stones. High-protein diets have
MARCH|APRIL 2013
LALE Features been shown to cause people to excrete a large amount of calcium in their urine. If the diet is followed over a prolonged period of time, this can increase a person’s risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones. This is especially true if the protein intake is not balanced with enough good vegetables, especially green cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli. •
Cancer. Because of the avoidance of carbohydrate-containing foods and the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants they contain. It is therefore important to obtain protein from a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Not only are your needs for protein being adequately met, but you are also helping to reduce the risk of developing cancer.
•
Unhealthy metabolic state (ketosis). Low-carb diets can cause the body to go into a dangerous metabolic state called ketosis since your body burns fat instead of glucose for energy. During ketosis, the body forms substances known as ketones, which can cause organs to fail and result in gout, kidney stones, or kidney failure. Ketones can also dull a person’s appetite, cause nausea and bad breath. Ketosis can be prevented by eating at least 100 grams of carbohydrates a day.
Most health and nutrition experts including myself are concerned that high-protein, low-carb diets cause a host of problems, particularly for the large segment of the population that is at risk of heart disease. Any diet that doesn’t allow for the adequate intake of fruits and vegetables is unbalanced and therefore can be problematic for future health and wellness. More worryingly is that for many yo-yo dieters, it often doesn’t matter how they get to their ideal weight as long as they get there! This underlying weight-obsessed motivation is one of the most fundamental mistakes people make and why they never manage to sustain a healthy weight. Actually almost 100% of the time, for the person who is always looking for the next “quick and easy diet”, the weight always comes back.
sometimes these negative elements become habits rather than rare indulgences. An unhealthy indulgence every once in a while is only human, but an unhealthy habit will affect you and your quality of life for the rest of your life. We universally value hard work, dedication, and integrity. However, when it comes to our health, using short cuts and quick fixes are too often promoted, accepted and applauded in our society today.
So when it comes to the next time you want to try the latest crazy diet, please stop wasting your valuable time and energy on doing something that will be short lived and instead, focus on making your body strong and healthy in a steady and mindful way and then you might have a chance of achieving your health goals.
Because it actually DOES matter how you lose the weight, not just that you lost it. The journey or the re-education that you go through to achieve your ideal health and your ideal weight is VERY important because the end does not justify the means; doing unhealthy things to your body can not ever result in a healthy body, that in itself is a true paradox. Using quick fix solutions that can harm the only body that you have, is self-destructive and counterproductive and can never lead you to a healthy, balanced mind and body.
To achieve permanent weight loss you must change your lifestyle one small step at a time. It is really that simple. The simple truth is that long-term health and weight management is only achieved by following a balanced diet of proteins, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates combined with regular exercise. There are no short cuts or quick solutions to being healthy; it is a daily regime of motivation, dedication and awareness that rewards you with lifelong health.
The body has a natural instinct and balance that should not be ignored. In our busy lives we all can be accused of ignoring our bodies’ natural balance at times. We work too hard, drink or smoke too much, take on too much stress, eat foods we know are bad for us.....there are many ways to abuse our bodies and

“It is the mind itself that builds the body.” J. Pilates

et’s start with three questions: 1) How aware are you of your body?, 2) How aware are you of your mind?, 3) How aware are you of the connection between your body and your mind? This article on Pilates is not going to be about how to tighten our hips, how to keep our arms from flapping as we wave goodbye or how to get rid of cellulite. Instead, we’re going to explore these

three questions and talk about our body awareness and how we can shape our body with our mind. Our concept of quality of life has been changing as we understand better that we cannot consider mind and body as two separate entities. Exercising not only produces a healthy body but also a healthy mind. The positive energy and improved mood we feel when we exercise is the best proof of this mind-body connection.

Different people have different needs but most of them express a desire to change their shape. Today’s society seems to be focused on external appearances and we follow suit by feeling unhappiness at the slightest imperfection our bodies display. The philosophy of Pilates might ask us, “Is it really our bodies’ shape that we’re unhappy with or the parts of our mind that shape our bodies?” When our body is stressed, it responds by tensing certain muscles. Many of us have faced a sudden neck ache or back ache that accompanies a stressful situation. If we’re lucky, when the stress is alleviated and our thoughts clear, the ache also disappears. But if we’re not so lucky, we never realize the connection between the stressful thoughts and the tense muscles. The tension then becomes a chronic condition, ruining our balance, posture, performance, and creativity. Pilates has eight principles that can improve our quality of life: concentration, strengthening, alignment, stretching, breathing, stamina, coordination, and awareness. Among these principles, awareness is the key that unlocks everything else. Using our breath as a bridge between our mind and body, we can improve our awareness and create harmony. When we exercise with this mindful and aware manner, we can master more complex movements and be amazed at our improved performance.

With so many distractions in our busy lives, it is a challenge to stay in the moment. Practicing Pilates with full awareness can create that space for us to “be here now” and let our minds and bodies become one with each other. When our mind and body work together, it is possible to regain that balance, serenity, and awareness that stress and negative thoughts steal from us. When we reach that full awareness, we can start enjoying our bodies as they are: a beautiful extension of our minds. I encourage all of you who want to find that mind and body awareness and learn to live in the moment to give Pilates a try. Even if you don’t subscribe to the philosophy, it will still shape your hips and tighten those flaps under the arms! How Much Do I Need to Know to Give Birth?
Certified Childbirth Mentor, Doula, Breastfeeding Counselor

his is a question that plagues modern childbearing women. Popular culture tells us to be prepared, to pursue knowledge about birthing options, positions and hospital routines. We are told to try hypnosis, to learn how to breathe, to be firm and strong and we will have the birth that we want.
birth outcome if she "follows the rules", or to blame her for not doing enough should her birth play out differently than expected. There are so many factors that come into play on the day that a woman gives birth, and she simply cannot control all of them, no matter how much she knows, how much breathing practice she has done, how hard she tries.
There is of course value in gaining knowledge about how the body works in labor, what to expect at the hospital, and methods for coping with labor when and if it becomes challenging. At the same time, I think that it is a bit unfair to promise a woman a particular
When I was pregnant with my now 2.5-year old son, I know that as a birth professional, most people I talked with assumed that I would have an easy birth because I already knew so much about birth, hospital routines and pain coping. While knowing about birth

mums ‘n kids is in some ways a blessing, it is possible to know too much. In fact statistically, birth professionals have higher rates of interventive and cesarean births. Hmmm. So if even birth professionals are having a hard time, what is missing in our education? Pam England and Virginia Bobro, founders and creators of Birthing From Within, talk about three kinds of knowing necessary for giving birth. Three kinds. Now, we've already discussed one, the book learning, the intellectual knowledge necessary to give birth in our modern world. This kind of knowing, used properly, can help women prepare for birth in an effective way, allowing them to sift through the options, the possible interventions, the doctors, midwives and doulas available to choose what kind of birth they would like to pursue. Book knowledge opens up doors and give women options. On its own however, it leaves women sorely deficient in some very important aspects of childbirth preparation and can actually keep mothers frozen in fear should the birth not go as planned. This is where the other types of knowing come into play: knowing ones insticts, understanding how the instictive body works and responds in labor and how to create circumstances most conducive to its emergence; and knowing oneself, knowing one's motivations, fears, concerns, hopes and desires and how these will impact one's choices for birth and one's ability to respond with flexibility when birth does not go as planned. Most mothers have an easier time with the book knowing. Our society is designed to support book knowledge, and current childbirth preparation practices are often soley focused on developing this kind of knowing. So even when mothers feel like there should be more, they often don't know where to start. Mothers who have not spent a lot of time already getting to know themselves and their instinctive voice may feel at a complete loss when told to "just trust your insticts". The reality is, in order for women to move beyond the book knowledge and into the less linear realm of self and instinct, they need some form of preparation and guidance. This guidance may come in the form of a mother figure, a friend who has "been there", or even a very holistic book on pregnancy, birth and parenting, which emphasizes the interior journey of birth, in addition to the outwardly observable milestones of dilation, contractions, pushing and delivery. A childbirth preparation course which supports mothers and fathers in exploring their internal territories can be invaluable in awakening the instinctive self and thus in preventing or lessening the likelihood of birth trauma. Whatever form the guidance takes, the mother should not feel pressure to choose any particular path. Alongside gaining new information about how the body responds to labor, how the breast produces milk, how to change a baby's diaper, mothers can also begin asking themselves searching questions, the kinds of questions to which the answers cannot be found in books or by asking another person. Mothers can choose a process for internal exploration and bridging the outer world with the inner, such as meditation, yoga, walking or tracing a labyrinth, bellydancing or process painting. Mothers can explore their fears about birth, working on building a coping mindset in anticipation for things going differently than expected (no matter how wonderful a birth may be, it can never possibly mirror a woman's expectiations; we can only guess about the unknown, and prepare the best we can). Mothers can read inspirational stories about mothers who have overcome difficult pregnancies, births or postpartum experiences. Mothers can get to know their own bodies' reactions to stressful, unwanted and new situations in order to hone their coping skills. Mothers can enjoy their pregnant bodies, and celebrate the miracle of the child growing inside.

SEARCHING QUESTIONS As she is deciding for or against a particular intervention in birth; whether to sleep with her baby or not; whether to vaccinate or not; even what kind of baby bed to purchase (or not), she can also ask herself, "How do I know to choose this. How do I know not to choose that?" This may seem like a strange, even irrelevent question, but understanding how we make the choices we do gives us a glimpse into the cultural beliefs we have absorbed. This in turn may provide us with the realization that all of our choices are based on the beliefs we have accumulated over a lifetime, based on what we were taught by our mothers, fathers, siblings, teachers, friends, relatives, employers, colleagues, television, advertising, everything. All that we beleive is true is based in what we have been taught, including when we choose to believe differently from the popular culture. If I have lost you now, just try taking a breath. Take another deep breath. And for a moment, think way back and remember a time when you first visited a foreign country. Remember the things that you found strange in the habits of the inhabitants there. Maybe their choices for breakfast food were different from your own; maybe the way they drove their cars; maybe the way that men and women interracted with one another; maybe the way that important holidays were prepared for. Any number of things may have come to your attention as you wandered around this new country, with new foods, new language and new customs. The people there may also have found strange things about your behavior, customs, habits and beliefs. Now, it is possible to say that the culture you come from is the right one, the foreign culture the wrong one. However, there are thousands of people on both sides saying that they are the right one. That their way of doing things, saying things, preparing things is THE RIGHT WAY. So who is right?
day to determine the course of our birth. Sometimes, things just happen. I hope that in addition to feeling possibly uncomfortable or even frightened by this idea, that you are also finding it empowering. This means that no one person can take responsibility for a birth outcome. No one person can make it wonderful or make it awful. And that we have the opportunity to change our beliefs about what a good birth is, and what a bad birth is, even if we are not happy about the outcome. Even if we are overjoyed and therefore think everyone should do it our way. If we let it, the experience of birth can be the most humbling, the most raw and the most empowering experience of our lives. Not just if we do it this way or that way. But if we do it our way.

If we can approach birth and parenting with the idea that there is no one right or wrong way to do anything, that the day we give birth is made up of not only all of the beliefs that we carry with us, but also those of our husband, doula, midwife, doctor, nurse, and hospital director, we see that no amount of book learning, no amount of preparation can guarantee a particular outcome. Along with fate, all of these beliefs and emotions and hopes come together on one

T
his year will be my thirtieth and like all the other Bridget Joneses out there, I’m not sure about finding the right man, having the kids, raising them, working. What brought up all these questions is that I am a woman with a very small sense of maternal instinct. Ask all the bamboo plants I’ve killed, I’m not the nurturing type. My fish during my freshman year of college froze to death. I gave my cat away to a man with a large farm so he would stop terrorizing everyone who lived in my apartment complex. I couldn’t give my little cat the time and love he needed while I was working. Consequently, raising a child and wanting to work don’t seem like compatible ideas. I see and think now that being a stay at home mom or dad is important to instil values and beliefs and, most importantly, discipline and not to mention love, in order to raise children with manners and a sense of respect toward society in general. How can it be accomplished in this modern, depressed economical time in a country not my own? The conundrum: how to balance work, a personal life and children, especially while

living abroad? At what cost does a two income household take on children? Before I delve into trying to attempt any sort of answer to these rhetorical questions, perhaps a few words on why I even bring up the topic. As a recent arrival to Istanbul, I, like many expats, found myself thrown into the midst of the chaotic Turkish life; spending time getting to know the city before my job started proved fruitful, or rather, a necessity; knowing how long it’ll take to cross the Bosphorus on a typical day is essential, and if your usual route fails you, learning one or two backups. Six months after my arrival it began: that first, frightful day at a new school. New students think they have a tough time; new teachers face a much more strenuous battle: new bosses, new colleagues, new duties, sitting alone in the cafeteria, a new language and gestures to learn in order to not make the wrong moves in class, not to mention the novel new behaviourisms of a language classroom full of Turkish teenagers. I dove in with all my know-how, motivation and vigour. Having just survived
the first semester, I now understand I know nothing, lack motivation and my vigour lasts just long enough to crawl into bed and my own desire in having children has been reduced to a similarity of my regular desire for kokorec. Recently, in the teachers’ room one week, after discussing difficulties I was having in managing my students, exasperated by the sheer number of hours in class with the students, my boss made a shrewd comment: “We see the students more than their parents do.” Without thinking I responded, “Is that why their behaviour is so bad?” Generalizations are not a good thing, but after talking to multiple foreign teachers around the city of Istanbul, I realize I’m not alone in my constant befuddlement of some Turkish teenagers’ classroom behaviour. It often seems their attitudes towards learning, school, and teachers are so unlike my own that I have few ideas how to cope. There are plenty of students who are working harder than I ever had to – attempting to catch up years of English language that their peers can
mums ‘n kids home where some are looked after by nannies or tutors. In Japan, the students are on trains to and from some sort of educational program whether school or an after hours cram school. All over the US kids are driven in soccer mom vans from ballet to music lessons and then home to do homework. Why all these questions, you ask? I’m a woman who loves to work. It brings me joy to get up five days a week, interact with a variety of different people, see the little numbers in the bank account go up – who doesn’t like that? What I am worried about is being able to spend enough time with my children like my parents did with me: at the dinner table, or playing together on weekends or bedtime stories at night, these types of moments from my own childhood now appear as fundamentally necessary to bring up a decent child. Also, I don’t want to deprive my kids of childhood experiences I know to be so wonderful but come from the parents having the time to spend with me and my siblings. How can you work and raise children successfully?
fudge well enough to get through the exams. They do appreciate and work hard and it’s for these kids that I live and breathe. I see myself reflected in their long hours of study, the taunting by the bullies, the unrequited crushes on older students. These are the children I would want mine to be like.
In most places today, a double-income family is necessary to sustain the family financially. In cities as busy and as expensive as Tokyo, Istanbul and New York, in many cases both parents have no choice but to work. Teaching in Turkey has raised within me more than a few questions about bringing my own child into the world. All I know these days is that if I want to have a baby, I’d better hurry up about it. I just can’t decide if it’s the best or right thing to do. Does anybody else feel the same? By Elizabeth Kielich
Growing up, my parents had high expectations of me, my grades, my behaviour, and there were no exceptions to hard work, respect, and doing my best on my school work. Seeing such similarities, I would love to ask them: do you see your parents at night? Does your dad help you with algebra, your mom with your literature projects like my parents helped me? Are these children so much with other adults, tutors or nannies, they never see their own parents? Most parents are doing what they think is best: attempting to give their children the best education, trying to keep their children a step ahead of the game. What am I getting at, you ask? My mom did not work while we were young. We had family meals together, both parents helped with homework, we did activities on the weekend, and while not the model family by any means, it seems this family time kept us balanced, and the expectations of my parents kept my siblings and I working hard, and now I see how lucky we were. What happens when those expectations aren’t there? What is the result of not having a father or mother help their child or spend time with you? How do parents today cope with two jobs? What time is left for the family? I’ve lived in various countries and I see the same pattern: families that eat together, spend time together have children that do better in school, are more focused and better behaved than families where the parents either choose or have to work. There are, naturally, some parents that are superhuman and seem capable to accomplishing everything themselves, from baking for the school bake sale to sewing a quilt, working as a doctor, being a loving husband/wife, and still having time to run marathons and write a book in his/her spare time. The rest of us, watching in disbelief, can barely cope being single with one withering, wilting plant that is struggling to survive. What is life going to be like for all these children being brought up with two working parents? In today’s economic slump, both parents are often working to support the family and in big cities like Istanbul, anywhere in the world, working parents means less time spent with the children. It’s a global phenomenon. In Turkey, students are shuffled on and off service busses to school and
