Board Letter

Dear All,

about the iwi

Caroline & Esbie

It is hard to believe that we are writing this letter for Lale No.4 and we are now half way through the membership season. The theme of this issue is Istanbul so enjoy reading and discovering more about this amazing city.

The IWI is a busy and dynamic organization but we know we can do much more. If you have some available time and would like to come and explore ways to volunteer with the IWI then we would love to see you at Anne’s house to talk more about it.

I hope you have been able to take full advantage of being a part of the IWI by attending the Opening Meeting and Christmas Bazaar, taking part in one of our programs or volunteering with the IWI or one of our charities. Perhaps you have just enjoyed being part of the IWI community through our newsletters and Lale.

Kind regards Caroline and Esbie

This time every year, the board starts planning for the new membership year. Each summer there is always turnover at the board level as some members leave Istanbul, some take up full-time work or their personal situation changes. This year is no exception. Get involved! Over the next few months we will be reaching out to members to ask them to become more involved in both the IWI and our charities. In addition to seeking new board members, we need more teams within the IWI to create and organize our big events For next year, we want to create individual teams for each of these events -- an Opening meeting team, a Christmas Bazaar team and a Lale team. We are also looking for people to co-ordinate the local coffee mornings, the Ladies Evening Out/Istanbul at Night program and many more. Ideally there would be 4 to 5 people on each team. We know many of you would like to help but have questions. What can I do? How much time do I need to dedicate? Do I need to speak Turkish? A team of people working on one project goes a long way to addressing those concerns. Please consider taking a more active role in the group. Its a great way to experience life in Istanbul in a different way, to make friends and to create events and programs that benefit our fellow expatriate women as well to gain the great satisfaction of aiding our charities which benefit some of the most disadvantaged of Istanbul as well. The Board is hosting a Pot Luck Lunch on Tuesday March 9 at 11.30am at the home of Anne Martin, our Volunteers Co-ordinator. The aim of the lunch is to provide an opportunity for people to come and talk to current board members, to our volunteers that already work directly for the IWI charities and other involved IWI members. You can ask questions, check out the opportunities for getting involved and have a nice lunch all at the same time.

Local Coffee Mornings

Weekly Yoga sessions at LifeCo

In the new year we will continue to hold area based coffee mornings, in local cafes or member’s homes. The idea is to bring together people who are living in the same neighbourhood but may not get a chance to meet otherwise. We are looking for people to help us be the host for these mornings. The hostess would choose a date and a venue such as a local coffee shop or their living room and welcome the guests.

The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. It seeks a unity of mind, body and spirit by working on one’s individual process which flows from foundation through precision to expansion. It is so adaptable to whatever your age or level of fitness is.

The following is our best attempt at dividing the vast metropolitan city of Istanbul (using last year's directory as a rough guide) so there is some method to the following list. If you would like to host an area-based coffee morning please send an e-mail to chairwoman@iwi-tr.org.

Due to our member’s demand LifeCo has organized a weekly yoga class for free for all IWI members. You have the choice to enjoy either the morning class or/and the afternoon one. You can even spend the whole day at LifeCo indulging yourself with a relaxing massage or get a wonderful facial. The sauna or steam room are at your disposal. No experience necessary. All levels welcome! Join our new weekly yoga class at LifeCo and start to build your strength, stamina and flexibility.

programs The Art of Illumination: Traditional Ottoman Painting

The embellishments of manuscripts and writing albums called murakka, tablets of ferman and beautiful writing, whether done in paint or gilt, are all defined as illumination. Like many Turkish arts of traditional origin, illumination depends on the skills of a number of craftsmen working together to create a finished product. Illumination is generally made after the book is written. When the calligrapher has completed writing the body of the work, it is the turn of the cedvelkes to rule the margins in gold, black ink, or red paint called surh. Master pictures of the design are then drawn by the illuminator, alone or with the others. All this would be carried out in miniature salons at the palace or in the studio of a great illuminator.

For more information about the artist please visit: www.dianapage.co.za; www.africanistanbulu.blogspot.com

In the wake of the devastating Haiti earthquake, many of our members have requested a talk on earthquake preparedness. We are holding the seminar on a Saturday to increase the chances that someone within the family will be able to attend.

As we all know the city of Istanbul is in an earthquake zone. According to JICA, Tokyo Technology Institute Prof. Yoshimori Honkura and Istanbul Municipality Researchers there is a 62% certainty that an earthquake will strike Istanbul within the next 20 years. There is much that you can do to ensure your family is knowledgeable about what to do in the case one strikes. You can also so make changes to ensure your house is ready to withstand a quake. Come and hear from the experts what steps you should take now.

Self-Awareness Seminar

The Mosaic Museum the Arasta Bazaar and Lunch at “A la Turka”

This seminar is made especially for expatriate spouses who long to find alternative ways to experience life in a positive manner. Learn about self-awareness of our core values and personal strengths. This seminar is constructed on the principle that human beings experience a sense of well-being when they are true to their core selves and core values. To be able to have such an experience of well-being in everyday life, we need to identify our core values and align with them in our daily acts. It does not matter if the acts are big or small, if they are performed at home, in the office or on the street. What matters is that we consistently practice this exercise in our daily lives.

It’s Spring time and a lovely time of the year in Istanbul. Come and join us fopr the first of our tours this month. We will visit the magnificent Mosaic Museum in Sultanahmet. The museum stands on a site of historical significance. In the Byzantium times, Emperor Constantine I founded the “Second Rome” and changed the name of the city from Byzantion to Constantinople. The Imperial Palace was built in the heart of the city. Today, the Palace no longer exists but in its place is a museum holding different historical wonders. After the museum, we will go on a guided tour of the nearby Arasta Bazaar and then enjoy lunch at “A La Turka”, the culinary space of IWI member, Eveline Zoutendijk

This seminar will strive to enable us to accomplish the following: - Define ourselves from the viewpoint of our values and strengths, using specific activities and assessment tools; - Set up individual methods on how to connect these values and strengths to our daily lives; and - Finalize goal-setting and take action by learning practical points to integrate into everday life. TCF Lecture Tulips and Exotic Plants in Europe

Walking Tour of Eyup and Pierre Loti

Although flowers were cultivated by the Ottomans before the time of Süleyman I, the artistic renaissance that took place during his reign made itself felt in the case of horticulture as well. The flowers in the gardens attracted the attention of foreigners visiting the Ottoman Empire, especially Istanbul.

The district of Eyup, once a village outside of the city walls, is named after the standard bearer of the Prophet Mohammed. Ayoup al-ansari had been a friend of the Prophet and a revered member of the Islamic religion’s early leadership.

The first wave of exotic plants to enter Europe in relatively modern times corresponds to the years following the publication of Pierre Belon’s account of his travels in 1546-1548. The French traveler observed the tulips, present in every Turkish garden, and described them as a kind of lily, noting that they were very different from those in his country. One of the Western Europeans who recognized the botanic riches of the Turkish Empire was Ghiselin de Busbecq, the Ambassador of the Holy Roman Empire to Istanbul from 1554 until 1562.

His tomb and the Eyup Sultan Cami are sacred places for most Muslims, ranking after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. It is also famous for the amazing array of brilliant Iznik tiles that cover the walls. Come along and discover this historical part of Istanbul. Up the hill to the north of the Eyup Mosque is the cafe where the French novelist Pierre Loti who loved Istanbul is said to have come for inspiration. We will finish the walk at the Pierre Loti cafe which has one of the city’s most superb views overlooking the Golden Horn (Halic). It is a must to sit and relax, drink cay, have a snack and enjoy the views.

In awe of the variety of flowers he saw in Turkish gardens, Busbecq sent his friend in Vienna, Clusius (Charles de l'Escluse), bulbs of tulips, hyacinths, anemones and crown imperials. After the 1560s, many other flowers and plants followed and had begun to spread in Europe.

charitY We want to thank again all the volunteers for the unbelievable time and energy they put into making this year’s Christmas Bazaar such a successful event. The money raised at the Bazaar is used to support various projects around Istanbul and some of that money has already been put to work. This year, we went back and took a look at the projects that IWI has supported in the past and went out looking for other new worthy endeavors as well. We are committed identifying and supporting projects IWI can support that: Help to improve the lives of women and children Support the most vulnerable of Istanbul’s residents Provide direct benefit Leverage the greatest return on the funds we donate. To this end, we have visited nearly all of our past projects. We visited the Aziz Nesim foundation in Catalca in the aftermath of the catastrophic flood that devastated their facility -- a residential home for disadvantaged children, Mor Cati a shelter for abused women and their children, Mavi Kalem’s counseling room to promote women’s health, Bomonti Fakirhanesi, AED and others. There are so many amazing things being done in Istanbul and so much help is needed. Thus far this year, with the funds IWI members and events have raised, we have been able to make the following awards. The Pink Angels - to support volunteers and activities with pediatric oncology patients at SSK Istanbul’s Okmedani Hospital. Wheelchair Tennis - to purchase balls and rackets for players.

iwi activities Ongoing Volunteering Opportunities Pink Angels: these volunteers go to SSK Okmeydani Hospital and spend time in the children’s oncology ward. The volunteers spend time playing with the children and giving them lots of special attention. The program runs 3 mornings a week. New Volunteers are welcome. Please contact Angela at 0532 723 7611 Blue Angels: the Little Sisters of the Poor care for elderly patients at Bomonti. The volunteers spend time with the elderly patients and with general duties around the home. Please contact Sister Philomena at 0538 267 3037

New Opportunities Nahil Shop: This shop in Beyoğlu (near Taksim Square) sells handicrafts, vintage clothing and books to raise funds for projects for low income women and children. The shop is looking for volunteers to help in the shop and to market their products. Please contact Şule Alpaslan on 0212 251 90 85, or bilgi@nahil.com.tr or sulealpaslan@hotmail.com AED Painting Murals for children in hospital: AED has been making a huge difference to the lives of the children at Cerrahpasa hospital. AED is looking for volunteers to assist with this project. Please contact Lily at 0535 683 7557 or email lily@aileegitimdernegi.org if you’d like to get in touch regarding helping with their projects. Refugees at the English Chaplaincy: The chaplaincy provides accommodation for a number of adult refugees who will be moving to English speaking countries who need practice speaking English on a one-to-one basis. In addition the refugees would benefit from the following items; single mattresses, towels and bedding. If you are able to help in any way please contact Canon Ian Sherwood at iwls57.mac.com@mac.com Over the next weeks and months, the IWI board will award funds and support to other worthwhile projects. We continue to explore new ways in which we can work in partnership with local organizations, this includes the awarding of funds and assisting in the placement of volunteers. Please contact Ann or Barbara if you have ideas for projects or wish to learn more about the projects we support or volunteer opportunities.

Tohum Vakfi - to support the education of a child for one year. Funds for this award were made possible by former IWI chairwoman Pervin LXX as a result of her collection of funds from a swim competition she completed. AED - funds to purchase supplies to paint more murals in children’s wards in Cerrahpasa Hospital. St. George Refugee Hostel - to provide food for three months for the refugees residing at the hostel run by Anglican Chaplaincy. We have continued to seek out volunteering opportunities for IWI members and support ongoing volunteering activities. We have explored new volunteering opportunities with the Nahil Shop, SACCD, AED and the Anglican Chaplaincy.

INTERVIEW WITH IWI MEMBER: JOAN-CLAIRE GOTTRAUX I am Joan-Claire Gottraux. I am Swiss and a second-generation expatriate. Over the past 25 years my family and I have lived in Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Argentina, Denmark and now Turkey. In fact the only continent on which I have never lived is Antarctica! I am a lawyer/solicitor, and although I have not been able to practise my profession abroad, I have learnt how to use and develop my skills and apply them in different fields and areas. I have two children at University so my husband and I now live a new life and are very happy to spend it in such a historically and culturally rich city.

Why did you decide to become a member of the IWI?

Wherever I live, it is vital for me to join an expatriate group as it represents "a survival kit" for me, at least in the beginning. IWI allows me to meet people from all over the world and to spend time with people who had similar experiences. Furthermore the IWI offers activities, events and different ways of discovering Istanbul and the local culture. It gives everyone the opportunity to get involved, to be active and creative, and most importantly to give back to society by way of participating in fundraisers. It is not often one gets the chance to have so much fun selling the lottery/raffle/entrance tickets wearing angel wings and a halo!

Where do you live?

We live in Ulus, close to the Ulus Park. This area is a perfect place to live as it's close to the Bosphorus, to OrtakĂśy and the city center. I use all means of transport: taxi, buses, tramway and I even like driving here (I did survive Buenos Aires and Tokyo before). On Monday mornings I drive along the Bosphorus to Istinye to join my tennis group. I enjoy the sight of the Golden Horn, the amazing skyline of the old city, but the Bosphorus is, every single time I see it, an enchantment for me. Until my last breath I will remember the turquoise colour of the Bosphorus on that one very miserable rainy Monday.

You have only been here for a short time what are your initial impressions of Istanbul? Have they changed?

I have been here over 6 months now and it seems so much longer already. I think that when I arrived, Istanbul and its people seemed homogeneous to me, but over time I began to realise that Istanbul is a center of many different cultures, backgrounds, religions, traditions, and moreover a place of contrasts, and not only between generations. I am fascinated by the history of the place and the incredible changes that have occurred over the last 80 to 100 years. On a lighter note, what continues to amaze me is how different the city feels on a glorious clear and sunny day, as compared to a misty and grey day.

Are you learning Turkish?

I am also learning Turkish and enjoying it very much. After just my seventh private lesson last week, my teacher told me that I am already at the "intermediate level". Well, I do prepare my lessons with passion, but I guess that speaking 6 other languages might help. Listening to the local radio does show me though that I still have a long way to go.

20

What has most surprised you about the city? Have you already discovered some "favourite" places, like restaurants, shops, your man at the Bazaar? My last visit to Istanbul dated back to the eighties so you can imagine my surprise to discover shopping malls all over the city. The city has also grown tremendously, on the Asian side, as well as on the European side.

Istanbul is not only an economic, but also a cultural center. There is a great energy and passion in the city - Orhan Pamuk writes about a certain sadness in/of the people of Istanbul, but I don't see it- it might have been the characteristic of the older generation that went through very different circumstances.

I haven't yet developed any specific habits, we are still discovering and trying out the innumerable restaurants- we love the fish here- discovering that each season, or part of season, has its own particular fish!!I still love to discover the city and its history and the many wonderful museums, exhibitions and art galleries.

rie has invited us to hold the exhibition on their grounds, and we are thrilled to be able to use its spectacular new Art Gallery "Ouvroir D'Art”. Le Springtime of the Artist is a collective exhibition and this year's nine artists will specifically create their pieces on the theme "Istanbul 2010: The Joy of Living".

How are you getting involved in life in Istanbul?

The artists' personal interpretation of the theme should bring forth a rich array of wonderful pieces of art- the artists are all residents of Istanbul, but do have different nationalities and backgrounds. This exhibition is a great occasion and opportunity for the expatriates and their friends to purchase paintings, lithographies, watercolours, sculptures and photographies which will be a long-lasting reminder of their stay in this fascinating city.

In the past, I have been a board member of an International School, worked for Habitat for Humanity Argentina (an NGO), been the PTA president of an International school in Tokyo and worked on numerous committees. I always try to get involved, to learn from people and circumstances and to contribute in a positive way. In Istanbul, I am getting involved on cultural issues and I am very excited about an upcoming event we are organizing. Virginie Lebecque and I are organising Istanbul Accueil's yearly Art exhibition called "Le Printemps des Artistes"(The Springtime of the Artist).

You are organising an upcoming exhibition can you tell us more about it?

Four years ago Istanbul Accueil set up its' first exhibition and the event has grown since then. Once more the Lycée Sainte Pulché-

MEMORIES OF ISTANBUL: Buying Socks By Debra Westlake

Buying socks: pretty mundane stuff. Not something you might comment on; certainly not a topic you might expect to write about in a magazine. But that’s what makes life interesting overseas – even commonplace events turn into adventures and eventually become something to write about! Two of my children are what you might call sockaholics. The eldest (a man- boy of 14) is fast becoming a fashion victim; a slave to fake brand names in underwear. The Dolce Gabbana elastic must be revealed over the top of the trouser waistband, which must of course hang rakishly low on the hips. In the sock department he is most particular - they must be of a certain thickness, colour, fabric and ankle style depending on the outfit and shoes (sports, jeans, uniform). It just isn’t worth trying to subvert him with Marks and Spencer’s anymore (more expensive but last longer) because they simply languish unused in the drawer. My eleven year old daughter, however, has an unusual skill with socks; she not only wears them on her feet, she can also turn them into fashion accessories that go almost anywhere on the body. Long gone are the days of sock puppets; now they are hacked up and converted into fingerless gloves, wrist bands, leg warmers, ties – you name it, she can create it with a sock. ‘Bizarre but interesting’ would be her fashion style. But we are not talking white M&S here either – this calls for colour and style and also bargain prices of course.

and old men’s grey woollens. These streets lined with shops all selling the same merchandise are the hallmark of many cities that we have lived in and never cease to fascinate and puzzle me: Silk Flower Street, Tissue Paper Street, Foam-in-every-Form Street, Polyester Suit Street and Polystyrene Ball Street – how can this many businesses all selling the same product possibly compete with each other successfully? But what do I know about the wholesale market in developing economies? For the casual consumer it is just fun to feast ones eyes on the rows of colour and shapes that make their own peculiar art form. In fact there is not just one Sock Street but some 3 and a half sock streets nestled into the wholesale underwear section of town. It takes some courage as a parent to take impressionable young people there. I became acutely aware of this when we subsequently took a friend of my daughter’s and her mother to the same spot. How was it that on our first voyage of discovery we had been so entranced by sock city that we hadn’t spotted the sleazy undies? To reach the safe sock area you must first run the gauntlet of an intriguing mix of raunchy, feathery, stringy red stuff that lies cheek by jowl (no pun intended) with enormous armpit to knee, skintone support pants (lift and separate the buttocks) and industrial over-shoulder-boulder-holders, as we used to call brassieres in my giggly schoolgirl days. I was grateful that the little girls’ Turkish doesn’t run to translation of the slogans on the pants: the other mum and I noted one pair of men’s underwear attractively emblazoned with the legend: ‘uzun arac’ (long vehicle).

Istanbul is sock heaven for both of them. The markets have good basics with fashionably visible fake brand names that my son loves. I enjoy selecting them from the neatly displayed piles of snowy white and cool grey on the stall as the seller shouts his bargains and makes cheeky jokes. They fall apart after 10 washes but at less than 1 TL a pair, if you buy enough to rotate them, the purse does not suffer and everyone is happy. During the Christmas holidays, while hunting appropriately enough for stocking fillers in the labyrinthine streets of Eminonu, we came across the jewel in the crown of the old city for my kids– Sock Street. Forget ancient mosques and valuable carpets – we had found socks! Their eyes were on stalks as we admired shop front after shop front displaying every variety of colour, design and sock length imaginable – from overknee, bold technicolor stripes and the latest diamond designs to babies’ ankle booties

22

Curiously enough these sexy styles are marketed in a supremely conservative area right next to the foot baths beside the mosque. One wonders how the sight of thongs and push up cleavages affect the worshippers as they cleanse themselves, but ours is not to question why… We should have spent less time gawping and more time focussed on sock purchase that day because many of the wholesalers were closed or closing since it was Saturday afternoon. Some will also only sell in bulk to traders so our desires for a pair of each in 4 different colours would not do. We raced desperately along the street trying to find one shop that would satisfy the impatient girls’ quest.

lale features bargain basement funky socks and would sell them in quantities less than 100. Soon our bags were stuffed with tubes of stripy and spotty cotton lycra. Panic over and sock hunger sated, we returned home to chop them up.

The encouragingly named ‘Bony Çorap’ and ‘Pinky Çorap’ had their shutters firmly closed. Then we spotted it – a large store with a sign declaring tantalisingly: ‘Panik yapma! Biz variz!’ (Don’t panic, we have it!). Reassured, I called out to the traders, ‘Çorap var mı?’ ‘Maalesef…’ So if they don’t have it then surely this would be the time to panic? ‘Well then,’ I retorted, ‘Panik var – we are panicking for our socks!’ Fortunately, they entered into the humorous repartee and good naturedly led us to a friend who specialised in

We got back to the usual Saturday scene of husband and youngest son with holey-socked feet up on the coffee table watching the football. Peas in a pod, they are happy with whatever footwear I toss in their direction. My youngest son - one of the twins - could not care less what is on his feet (or anywhere on his body for that matter). Eying his twin in her latest startling combinations and blissfully unaware of the sacrifices to the Sock Goddess that she has made, he asks disparagingly, ‘Why do you have socks on your arms?’ and after a pause while his team takes a goal kick adds affectionately: ‘You look stupid.’ Perhaps his fashion conversion will come later… Photos by Mariette Rijnsdorp

Culture Chameleon Row after row of twinkling lights, already hang high across the crowded Istiklal Caddesi, heralding the arrival of 2010 and the crowning of Istanbul as a European Capital of Culture for 2010. But the yearlong celebration truly kicked into high gear on Saturday, Jan. 16, with a citywide party designed to dazzle spectators and erase any doubts about Istanbul’s place as a cultural gem worthy of international attention. This year, celebrations highlight everything that makes the city special. First as Constantinople and later as Istanbul, this has been the capital of two great empires. Straddling two continents, the city has been the gateway through which Eastern influences have reached Europe, as well as the West's window on the Orient, Asia and the Islamic world. Recent years have seen the city undergo yet another renaissance, with the opening of boutique restaurants, stylish rooftop bars, nightclubs on the shores of the Bosporus and every class of restaurant paying homage to the exquisite Turkish cuisine.

ancient Anatolian civilisations – dating back 4,000 years – have played in the formation of European cultures, using Istanbul as a bridge (Mar‑May). From Byzantium to Istanbul will narrate the history of the Byzantine empire through treasures from major Turkish museums and also institutions such as the British Museum, Vatican Museums, the Louvre and the Hermitage. The exhibition is staged at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum (Sep-Nov). On a smaller scale, an exhibition entitled 99 Qur'ans will showcase the exquisite calligraphy for which Istanbul became famous in the Ottoman Empire, at the Galata Dervish Lodge (Sep 5-Nov 15). Aficionados should also visit the Calligraphy Museum, housed in a former theological college close to Beyazıt mosque, which is due to open this summer after renovation.

In the run-up to 2010, the authorities embarked on an extensive programme of restoration of sites throughout the city – everything from traditional wooden Ottoman houses to tombs, fountains, bazaars and many of the best-known sights. Among them are Topkapi Palace, heart of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries, perched on its wooded promontory overlooking the Bosporus and the Sea of Marmara. Another is Aya Sofia, greatest legacy of the Byzantine empire: originally a church, later a mosque and now a museum, for nearly 1,000 years it was the largest enclosed space in the world. Fascinating, too, in its own way is the Galata Dervish Lodge, the oldest surviving monastery (tekke) of the Mevlevi order of Sufis, who sought an ecstatic connection with God through music and dance. The city's designation as European Capital of Culture (an honour it shares with Pécs in Hungary and Essen in Germany) makes this a particularly exciting year to visit. A packed calendar of arts and other events makes wonderful use of many fine historic buildings. Indeed, attending a performance is often the best way of seeing treasures that would otherwise be closed to the public – such as the exquisite sixth-century church of St Irene in the grounds of Topkapi Palace, built by the emperor Justinian, and prized for its sublime acoustics. Here are some of the highlights of the coming year:

Exhibitions and museums

The cultural, economic and political relationships between Russia and the Ottoman Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries are the focus of Treasures of Kremlin Palace in Topkapi Palace. Held in the imperial stables, this exhibition gathers works once housed in the palaces of the tsars and the sultans (Feb-May). Meanwhile, the Archaeology Museum – well worth visiting for its world-class collection of classical antiquities – will stage an exhibition called Assyrians in Istanbul. This will look at the role that

24

Photo By: Nicolas Lymberopoulos Two new museums will open this year. The Museum of the Princes' Islands is devoted to the culture of this archipelago in the Sea of Marmara, an hour from the city centre by ferry. These wooded, traffic-free islands are a popular summer getaway for city residents; neglected by the authorities during the Ottoman period, they also became a place of refuge for the city's Greek, Armenian and Turkish minorities. The new museum will open in the former primary school on the biggest island, Büyükada (July 25). The Museum of Innocence was inspired by the 2008 novel of the same name by the Turkish Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk. This poetic tribute to the city uses films, photos and other memorabilia to document culture and daily life in Istanbul from the Fifties to the present (July).

Music

Another highlight will be the opportunity to hear music in exquisite venues not easily accessible to the public. A series of concerts called Music of Istanbul Architecture will bring performances March & April 2010

to settings including the 19th-century Dolmabahçe Palace, the largest and most sumptuous of the palaces on the shores of the Bosporus (Apr 6); Galata Dervish Lodge (May 7); Aynalıkavak Pavilion, part of an 18th-century palace on the Golden Horn (June 2); the church of St Irene (June 12); Yildiz Chalet Pavilion, part of the Yildiz Palace overlooking the Bosporus (June 19); Topkapi Palace (Sep 21); and Kumkapı Armenian Church (Dec 7). Also in St Irene will be the highlight of this year's International Istanbul Music Festival: the world premiere of Adam's Lament, a specially commissioned work by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (June 7). One of the more intriguing musical events centres on the city's Greek, Armenian and Jewish communities, with a concert on each of the four main Princes' Islands. Istanbul's Languages/Istanbul Songs will feature folk singers and native speakers presenting works from the heritage of each community: Kınalıada, known for its Armenian population (June 9); predominantly Greek Burgazada (June 10); Turkish Heybeliada (June 11); and Büyükada, whose Jewish residents traditionally spoke Ladino, or Judeo-Spanish (June 12). Looking further afield, Balkanist – Istanbul 2010 Balkan Music Festival will reveal the city's role as a musical focus for the Balkan region, exploring the common roots of musical traditions of neighbouring countries (April). Music Stops will celebrate World Music Day (June 21) with performances at outdoor stages throughout the city. The largest stadium concert in the city's history will take place when U2's 360° 2010 tour rocks into town (Sep 6). One of the weirder events will be Tales of Future, a set of multimedia concerts in August featuring the Bosporus as a giant musical instrument – interacting with ethnic percussion instruments played by robots.

Performing arts

Among a host of dance events will be the Istanbul International Ballet Competition, culminating in a gala (July 5-10). A new music and dance production called Barbarossa is based on the life of the 16th-century Ottoman admiral of the same name – as well as being an exploration of Istanbul's relationship with the sea and mankind's relationship with water (July 13-14, Sep 26‑27). The highlight of a variety of events held throughout the year under the Danslab umbrella will be Dance Platform Istanbul, which will showcase classical and contemporary Turkish dance as well as genres from tango to jazz and hip hop – through workshops, masterclasses and performances (Sep 15-22).

An event quaintly entitled Istanbul is having fun on the street will be a celebration of street theatre and circus at squares and streets along the coastline of the Golden Horn, the five-mile inlet and natural harbour at the heart of the city (Sep 15-26).

Visual arts

Photography Parade is a series of month-long exhibitions of work by local and foreign photographers portraying various aspects of the city, at the gallery of the Fototrek Photography Centre on Istiklal Street. Breaking the Stereotypes is an exhibition that looks at the images that the "Orient" has of Europe and vice versa. Comparing the self-awareness of the East and West in literature, media and daily life, it invites viewers to challenge the stereotypes (May 14-June 27).

Local traditions and crafts

For the first time, the city is putting together a crafts map and guide to about 500 artisans working in centuries-old traditions from book arts to wood carving, from wrought-iron work to mother-of-pearl inlaying. A map in four languages with details of their workshops will be available free of charge throughout the city (launching, with website, Apr 30). A good place to learn about Sufi culture is at the Introduction to Mevlevi culture, to be held every Sunday throughout the year at the Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge. This includes excerpts of music and literature, as well as re-enactment of the traditional sema ceremony. The lodge is also staging classical music and Sufi music concerts every month. Turkey's own long tradition of shadow theatre is celebrated in Karagöz in Istanbul, Istanbul in Karagöz. Events include shows at a variety of venues (June-Nov), an exhibition (July 1-30), and the International Shadow Theatre Festival (Oct 12-16). Imperial Performance is a special show on Sultanahmet Square evoking festivities of the Ottoman era, involving acrobats, wrestlers, riders, fireworks, horse races and martial arts (Aug 11-Sep 8). We would like to invite you to Istanbul Accueil's yearly Art Exhibition called "Le Printemps des Artistes" - "The Springtime of the Artist" Come and enjoy the great array of paintings, lithographs, photographs and sculptures created by the 9 artists participating in this event. The artists are from Turkey, France, Belgium, South Africa and America and their common denominator is their talent and their love of Istanbul, a city in which they all reside. Their personal interpretation of this year's theme "Istanbul 2010: The Joy of Living" promises to be surprising and captivating. This exhibition is a charity fundraiser, so don't hesitate to support this event! MY CHILD WON`T EAT! Dr Beril Bayrak Bulucu

How often do we hear this complaint in a pediatric practice? At least a few times each day. There are many reasons why parents feel their children do not eat enough. Sometimes a child may have a real appetite problem but most other times parents have an unrealistic expectation about what a child’s daily intake should be. Feeding is very central to parenting and when a child does not eat parents go through a spectrum of unpleasant feelings: anxiety or fear -- is my child going to be underweight or is he/she sick? Feelings of incompetency --I must be a bad mother as I am not able feed my child. And these are just a few of the emotions involved with children and food. Of course, these emotions can and are exacerbated by outside comments of relatives and friends. Some medical practitioners can induce a parental anxiety as well by focusing more on the numeric facts rather than the dynamics around feeding. Unfortunately the anxiety or negative feelings of the caregiver make matters a lot worse and feeding becomes even more difficult. Think of a mother following around her daughter or son with a spoon in her hand! How tense that can be for both sides. Poor appetite has many reasons. But first we need to analyze the relativity of this concept. The food requirements of children depend on many different factors. The most important one of course is their growth rate. Along with growth rate, many other factors like teething, environment, heat and activity level are all important in determining how much food a child needs. Moreover, all these mentioned variables change -- especially growth rate. We know that children grow in spurts and during these spurts they have increased nutrient requirements.

Helping a family to be more relaxed but looking at the problem comprehensively can help resolve the problem by taking in to account all family dynamics as well. If the poor appetite is ongoing, there might be a lot of reasons in addition to illness. One is a structural or genetic reason. Some children have poor appetites just like their mothers or father did as children. They do not grow at rapid rates or get in to highest percentiles but they grow and they do fine. Some kids have poor appetite due to endless food fights. Having parents over emphasize eating. Some other children may have poor appetite due to depression or other psychological distress. Reasons like abuse and neglect can also be indicated by poor appetite. When it is transient, however the reasons could be as simple as teething or upper respiratory infection to change in climate. Sometimes short attention spans might effect appetite (eg a 4 month old) and of course medications might have a negative affect on appetite. Dealing with feeding issues is as dynamic as dealing with the whole health. Also they should be assessed in a `considering the whole` attitude. Mother`s or grandma`s feelings might be as important as the content of the diet. As health providers it is our responsibility to give families guidance about the requirements and amounts but all these need to be done in a pleasant and nurturing way! Solutions are not simple but most often reside in a family’s own natural resources of nurture! The purpose should be making food a pleasant and natural experience. Dr Beril Bayrak Bulucu Pediatrician

When the spurt is over the food intake will decrease. That means a relatively `decreased appetite but this decrease is also very normal. When growth rate decreases so does the appetite. A 15 month old toddler might eat even less than an infant and this might be normal too. Requirements depend on the child, activity level and even season. Keeping our expectations realistic and learning the age appropriate requirements are important, however some kids really do have a poor appetite. How do we approach this very common problem? First, it is important to understand if this is a transient or ongoing problem and how much it is affecting the child. Growth rates are important objective criteria. Is the child gaining weight? Is the child getting taller? How does the BMI look compared to before? The child might be growing in his own growth percentiles or might have a short term or mild stunting, in which case we do not worry much. However if the child is falling across his percentiles and has a stunted growth we might start mentioning the word `failure to thrive` and it can be cause for worry! If a child is failing to thrive, after ruling out organic reasons, it is important to investigate the cause. What might the reasons be? Some of them include CF, thyroid problems, Infections, bowel problems, milk allergy resulting in colitis and others. However, these conditions are very rare and most often times failure to thrive work ups do not reveal any problems. When we make sure there is no failure to thrive or no organic etiology we can approach the problem in a more longitudinal way.

A HEARTFELT PROJECT: THE STORY OF THE AMBULANCE FOR STREET ANIMALS OF ISTANBUL by Roy Manukyan “ I must do something for the homeless animals on the streets “ was how Yağmur Özgür Güven, the founder of BGD ( Barınak Gönüllüleri ve Hayvanlara Yaşam Hakkı Derneği / The Society of Volunteers for Shelters and Animal Rights ) started her animal protection group, after seeing the everyday sufferings of homeless animals on the streets. This was the thought which paved the way for an internet based group to become a Society for Animal Rights which reaches many parts of Turkey. It aims to provide a solution to the problems and suffering of homeless animals and led to BGD’s incorporation as a Society in April 2006. The organisation defined its purpose and scope of work as a national initiative directed at the issues of animal shelters and rehabilitation centers in Turkey, the problems of homeless animals and preventing violations of animal rights in Turkey. The first leg of the campaign which kick-started BGD was called “Our hearts are beating on the Streets”. Many celebrities supported the campaign by posing with street animals for billboards that were exhibited in several city streets. Advertising agencies, professional photographers and copywriters volunteered their services and magazines such as Elle, Forbes, Atlas, Istanbul Life, ALL, PC Magazine and Hafta published campaign ads periodically over a one year period. The second leg of the campaign was a big concert which took place in Turkcell Kuruçeşme Arena. Five thousand people attended the concert . This was the biggest stage production ever organised in the world for animal welfare. Ajda Pekkan, Sezen Aksu, Candan Erçetin, Hande Yener, Yaşar all volunteered their time and appeared on stage for the benefit of homeless animals. Originally, all of the proceeds of the concert would be channeled, with the permission of the Governorship of Istanbul, to the Rehabilitation Center for Handicapped Street Animals, a project that would make a very positive difference in the lives of homeless animals.

“ Unfortunately city traffic and irresponsible drivers continue to create havoc for street animals. We work to give those animals a second chance in life, rather than leaving them injured and suffering on the sides of highways, but we need the support of our good citizens so that we can continue to provide and even improve our service “ says Yağmur Özgür Güven, founder of BGD. “The biggest difficulty we encounter is the cost of the animals’ medical treatments“ continues Ms. Güven. Another important issue for BGD is finding good citizens who are willing to adopt the animals left handicapped after their injuries, since those animals are unable to survive on the streets. For more information on the story of the Ambulance and activities of BGD you may contact the Society at their Kadıköy offices (0216) 449-9052, or via their website www.bgd.org.tr or www.kalbimizsokaktaatiyor.org For those who would like to help the Ambulance continue saving lives, account information : “Barınak Gönüllüleri Derneği” İş Bankası , Caddebostan şubesi (1082), acct no 653507

The architectural plans for the center were drawn up on a volunteer basis by Doğan Tekeli, but due to the difficulties encountered in finding an appropriate site for the project , it was decided that those proceeds would be used in another project of a similar nature, namely, in the procurement of an “ Animal Ambulance “. After a painstaking two year period transforming the interior, equipping the vehicle with medical and first aid equipment and materials, obtaining all official permits, and most important of all setting the blueprint for the working relationship with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the project gave its start in June 2009. The vehicle, serving the greater Istanbul area, works around the clock, seven days a week, with a full time veterinary and BGD volunteer on board and has so far rushed to the scene to rescue more than 900 injured street animals. BGD creates a separate file for each animal rescued, sees through the end of each animal’s medical treatment, and those fully recovered animals are then dropped back off where they were initially found.

Istanbul Eats' latest roundup: the best of SultanaHmet! Call it the Sultanahmet Squeeze: How to stay close to the monuments of the Old City and avoid eating in tourist traps? We get this question a lot. We. Since the Sultanahmet area is primarily a tourism zone, locals-only haunts are few and far between. At most restaurants, prices tend to be higher than usual, while quality and service are unreliable, at best. That said, there are some fine places to eat in the area. We’ve compiled a short list of restaurants to help avoid the traps.

Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi

Tarihi Sultanahmet Koftecisi is the real deal for kofte, or meatballs. All those hand-written, framed letters from movie stars, politicians and military generals that cover the walls of this Sultanahmet mainstay are not complaints. This Inegol-style kofte – that’s the log format of the meatball, not the patty – is pleasantly springy, aromatic and juicy. When dressed with a spicy red pepper sauce (served upon request) and stuffed into a fresh hunk of bread, it borders on divine. We like to sit in the front room at the old marble tables to watch the action at the grill. (15-20 TL/person)
 Address: Divanyolu Caddesi 12
Telephone: 212-520-0566

Giritli

Giritli deserves more ink than we can afford it here. This elegant yet comfortable fish restaurant, serving food typical of the Turks who once lived on the island of Crete, is full most nights with groups of locals and tourists taking advantage of a prix fixe menu that includes bottomless glasses of wine, raki or beer. But the food here more than holds its own. While the grilled octopus leg in olive oil is close to perfect, but we get really worked up for the seafood and orzo salad and the olives stuffed with walnuts and feta – part of the dozen or so starters brought to the table. In the warm months Giritli’s garden is just as pleasant any rooftop terrace. (Set menu: 85 TL/person includes local wine, beer or raki)
 Address: Keresteci Hakkı Sokak
Telephone: 212-458-2270

Dubb Indian

You’ll need the strength of Shiva to fight past the hawkers shoving menus in your face as your work your way to the quiet side street that is home to Dubb Indian. Inside, you’ll find a quiet, if garishly decorated, sanctuary to curry and vindaloo. Dubb’s menu has all the Indian standards, although the kitchen needs a little encouragement if you like your food spicy hot. Request to become a “Dubb Club” member and you’ll get a discount – if the gods are willing. (30-40 TL/ person)
Address: Amiral Taftil Sokak 25 (just behind Divan Yolu by the fountain)
Telephone: 212-517-6828

Seoul Restaurant

Istanbul has an unusual abundance of Korean restaurants, many of which are surprisingly good. We suggest the full Korean spread laid out at Seoul Restaurant. Usually packed with groups of Korean expats and tourists, this restaurant can’t afford to slip on authenticity. The cold salad starters, including the fiery pickled cabbage kimchi, followed by a range of BBQ standards grilled in situ at your table, offer a refreshingly spicy break from Turkish norm. (40-50 TL/person)
 Address: Akbıyık Caddesi 37
Telephone: 212-458-0621

Ahırkapı Balıkçısı

We found this little grilled fish and beer dive while popping out for a drink from a dry wedding at the lovely wooden Dervish lodge, Dede Efendi. With a simple menu dominated by fresh seafood at reasonable prices, a smattering of rickety tables, and colorful locals sipping raki, this is just the sort of place a concierge might tell you avoid. In warm weather, when they drag a few tables out onto the sidewalk, there are few better places in Sultanahmet to eat a simple grilled fish washed down with a cold beer. (20-30TL/person)
 Address: Keresteci Hakki Sokak 46
Telephone: 212-518-4988

Hocapaşa Sokak

Hocapaşa Sokak near the Sirkeci train station, a short trek from the Sultanahmet monument epicenter, is without dispute (at least in our opinion) the best address for authentic, inexpensive dining options in the Old City area, if not Istanbul. From Iskender kebab (link in kasap osman) to cag kebab (link our cag spot) it is hard to go wrong with the many options packed into this small pedestrian street. (10-20 TL/person)
Address: Hocapaşa Sokak (one street uphill from Sirkeci train station), Sirkeci

The International Professional Women of Istanbul Network As the New Year traditionally begins with contemplation and resolutions for the year ahead, IPWIN decided to tap into that spirit by starting the year with a seminar designed to turn what are usually short-lived goals into something more permanent. “Transitions was designed by Melissa Hungerford ( Director of Talent Management at Coca-Cola) and Kate Reid ( AoEC Accredited Executive Coach) in response to what we were hearing from IPWIN members about the frustration and confusion surrounding their professional and personal lives. For some it was bewilderment about finding themselves unable to work and unsure how best they should use their time here, others wanting to change direction but not knowing where to start, and still more who were considering re-entering the work-force after time out. The seminar was well received with over 30 women gathering at the Taxim Hill Hotel to hear strategies on change, get tools to individually crystalise their best next direction and receive tips to make the practical and psychologocial journey easier. Each attendee went away with an information pack for further solo work , and many took up the offer of discounted one-to-one coaching with one of the three coaches supporting the seminar. Most of all, the sharing and laughter from those attending showed that changing direction is not always a serious subject ! That camaraderie and willingness to share has also been evident in the monthly networking events taking place in Gezi on the first Tuesday of every month. It’s great to see different people attending and to be able to swap information, tips and stories on working or job hunting in both Istanbul and overseas. Upcoming events are advertised by email to those on the mailing list, but will also be posted on the new updated website. If you have requests for seminars or talks - or indeed if you can share your knowledge by helping host one, let me know at kate@iwi-tr. org Best wishes, Kate

Book Club January Meeting A Swedish Thriller On 9th November 2004 the Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson climbed 7 flights of stairs, reached the top and died of a massive heart attack aged only 50. Larsson was a serious writer who had campaigned through his journalism against right-wing extremism in Sweden. However, for relaxation he had planned a series of 10 detective novels to be written in his spare time. By the date of his untimely death he had completed only the first three of these, which have now been published posthumously. Our book for January was the first of this series, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The main characters in this Swedish thriller are a crusading journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, and a young woman, Lisbeth Salander, who has a strange personality but exceptional talent as an investigator. Blomkvist is hired by a wealthy Swedish industrialist, Henrik Vanger to find his long lost grandniece. Salander becomes Blomkvist’s assistant. During the search various skeletons fall out of the Vanger family cupboard and Blomkvist narrowly escapes with his life, before the mystery of the niece’s disappearance is solved. Meanwhile, another mystery, the odd personality of Lisbeth Salander, is set up to carry the reader on to the next book in the series, The Girl Who Played With Fire. This was a clever thriller with interesting characters and twists and turns of plot which kept the reader turning the pages in spite of the sometimes distasteful content. Our ratings ranged from 4.5* to 1*, averaging out at 3.5*. Discovering Istanbul: An Interview with Esra Tasar, owner of Gymboree in Turkey. 1) Tell us about yourself.

I am a graduate of the University of Nottingham in the UK and lived in the UK for four years. After returning to Istanbul, I completed my Masters degree at Koç University. I then worked at several companies, but never felt completely satisfied with my positions. I married in 2002 and within the first year, I got pregnant. My daughter is six years old now and I am three months pregnant. My husband and I are planning a third child but will make our final decision after our second child is born : )

2) When and why did you bring Gymboree to Turkey?

3) How do you balance your personal and business life?

This is very difficult for me especially on weekends. During the week, my daughter is at school full-time but on the weekends all our playgroup classes are full and there are birthday parties in the afternoons that I need to work at. My husband helps me on the weekends. On Saturdays, he takes our daughter to work with him and they spend the day together. On Sundays, I work part-time depending on the party schedule. With our second child, everything will get more difficult. I am planning to make a baby room at work and to find a good nanny : )

4) Tell us about your most memorable times at Gymboree?

My most memborable days are the openings of my sub-franchises. Adding new locations and making the Gymboree family grow makes me very happy.

When my daughter was around one year old, I was only able to take her to parks and shopping malls. There were not many other options. There was playgroups at preschools but I was not satisified with them because the children’s ages were too mixed, the facilities were not clean, there was not enough equipment and the teachers did not speak good English. At that time, I heard about Gymboree and went to visit their closest location in Zurich. Since I love their concept, believe in early childhood education and love children, I decided to bring Gymboree to Turkey. I felt confident in Gymboree based on their more than 30 year experience record, 570 locations worldwide and their reputation as a global leader in early childhood development programs.

42

Also I enjoy that we have parents who signed up their babies around 2 months of age and now their “babies” are in our dropoff school program for 3 year olds and up. It’s really amazing for me to see their development. I love building relationships with parents over the years.

5) What are your future plans?

Gymboree now has seven locations with six of them in Istanbul: 4. Levent, Beykoz, Ataşehir, Erenköy, Kemerburgaz and Yeşilköy and one location in Ankara. We are planning on making a total of 10 locations in the next two years. We might even open Gymboree Metro Centers in shopping malls. We are waiting for new programs from Gymboree US for the upcoming year. Note of interest: Gymboree was our 2009 “Kids’ Korner” Christmas Bazaar sponsor and has been a great friend to IWI over the years. They host International holiday parties and offer excellent playgroup class discounts to our members.
