March & April 2011

Board Letter

* Chrissy Ramski Güleç

Dear Ladies, taining regular contact with the charity receiver and work teams involved. An annual report is also issued at the beginning of June. In no circumstance is money given directly to any party for them to dispose of at will.

P

lanning for this year’s Spring Charity Ball is in full effect. The Spring Ball planning committee has been hard at work developing this year’s theme, spending many hours discussing details and securing vendors for the evening, and reaching out to sponsors in hopes to raise the most amount of money possible for charity.

Supporting charity projects this way is not only important to the individuals served, but also to their families who depend on and are touched by our continued support. And it is because of each one of us in IWI that we are able to make a difference in these lives. This is the ultimate feeling of doing good! The importance of sponsorship Typically, the charity funds raised from the Spring Ball are distributed to a number of charities that IWI supports, but this year IWI has chosen to dedicate the net proceeds of the Spring Ball to long-standing IWI charity project Bomonti Fransız Fakirhanesi.

This year’s ball – Une Soirée Parisienne – will whisk you away into the magic of a Parisian night. On Saturday May 7th, guests will gather together in Istanbul’s very own French Gardens for an evening of dinner, dancing and merriment, all in the name of raising funds for IWI charity.

Bomonti is a home for the poor and elderly of Istanbul, administered by the Little Sisters of the Poor. The annual IWI Christmas Bazaar, which is now the largest international Christmas bazaar in Istanbul, was started years ago with the aim of raising funds for Bomonti. So the IWI and Bomonti have a strong history together.

The night will be full of surprises and special entertainment to be enjoyed, a lottery planned where guests can win fabulous prizes, as well as a silent auction where the highest bidders take home remarkable items donated by our generous sponsors. It is sure to be a rendevous not soon to forget!

This year Bomonti is in particular need of support as it is undertaking a massive building program. The facilities for the elderly residents is being upgraded to meet modern standards, giving each resident their own room and toilet. These improvements will assist in improving the quality and dignity of the residents’ lives.

It means so much more than just throwing a great party.

But the benefits are not one-sided. Sponsors of the Spring Ball also enjoy great advantages. Whether the sponsor is big or small, a company or individual, some of the benefits sponsors can receive are: »» Exposure to a diverse and upscale audience of influencers and decision makers »» Brand is presented to 250+ guests »» An opportunity to be associated with other high-profile International and Turkish brands »» Brand logo recognition in LALE magazine, on IWI’s website, and in Spring Ball promotion materials

Being on the planning committe now for the past few years, I can personally vouch that there is a tremendous amount of work that goes into planning this event. But at the end of the night, when the dancefloor has emptied and the last party-goer has headed home, we realize how every moment of planning leading up to the night was well worth it. It is all worth it because the money raised goes directly to IWI-supported charity projects, helping to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate. The charity projects that IWI supports are diligently reviewed each year and must be accepted first by the IWI Board. Then the Charity Team supervises and controls the distribution of goods and projects, mainMarch & April 2011

fact I can help.” As you can imagine, the generosity of our charity project donations are directly related to the success of the spring ball and generosity of our sponsors. Sponsorship can happen on many levels. Here are some ways that you can support the ball this year: »» »» »» »»

»»

Attend the ball; invite your friends! Buy lottery tickets before and at the event, even if you cannot attend the ball Bid on items in the silent auction during the ball SPONSOR the ball as a company or individual – we are seeking: • cash donations • donations of goods and/or services for the silent auction, lottery and gift bags • champagne / wine / cheese sponsors Volunteer your time • help set up for the event • help prepare gift bags in advance of the ball

As an organization, we are 600+ women representing over 50 nationalities, so this is our chance to unite and support the 2011 Spring Ball. It may be as easy as asking your küafor or favorite spa or restaurant to donate a voucher. Or maybe you know someone who may want to be a cash sponsor, or donate goods or services for the lottery, silent auction, or gift bags. To keep with this year’s theme, we are also looking for French companies to approach for donations. Even if you cannot attend the ball, these are ways you can still lend a helping hand with sponsorship. So whether you help by attending the ball, participating in the lottery and silent auction, being a sponsor, helping find a sponsor, or volunteering your time, every action counts! On behalf of the 2011 Spring Ball planning committee, I thank you in advance for your help. *Chrissy Ramski Güleç Sponsorship Coordinator chrissy@iwi-tr.org

So you ask “how can I help?” Sponsorship is oftentimes the collaborative effort of many, but in most cases it is initiated by that one person who says “yes, in

he ladies of IWI celebrated Valentines Day, in their Neighborhood Coffee Morning groups this month. They had very interesting and romantic discussions. Some discussed how they met the love of their life, how long they have been together, some showed their wedding pictures, some baked love-heart cookies, some even had Valentines Day quizzes ! What do women want most on Valentines Day ? Well, according to survey done by the Tarabya Group (which I had the pleasure of visiting), what Most women want on Valentine’s Day is simply - A bouquet of Red Roses ! So, ladies, here’s wishing that our simple and humble wish of receiving those Roses comes true this Valentines Day. Special thanks to all our hostesses for this month, who went to a

programs Relax at Mosaic Day SPA

The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera

Happiness can be found in the smallest things. It begins with feeling good about yourself, so you can even feel better with the ordinary things in life.

With slim sable brushes, Frida Kahlo painstakingly rendered her bold unibrow and mustache in dozens of self-portraits. Her paintings and still life were deliberately naive, and filled with the colors and forms of Mexican folk art. Vanity? Hardly. Frida was not about preserving youthful beauty so much as identifying herself with Mexico, her beloved homeland.

At Mosaic Day Spa you will find a chance to escape from your daily life and spoil yourself with the botanical, luxurious face and body treatments from Carita and Decleor. Away from the chaos of the city, entrust yourself to the experienced hands of our skin care experts. It is our priority to transform your daily routines into more meaningful ones, just by taking the time to enjoy a relaxing massage or a wonderful facial. Relax and enjoy our terrace before or after your treatments and feel the refreshing breeze coming from the Bosphorous. All treatments are performed with La Maison de Beaute Carita Paris and Decleor products. IWI members will get a 25% discount on all beauty treatments and massages as well as 15 % off all Carita and Decleor products during those 4 days. Avangarde is located in the same building in case you would like to get your hair done as well.

An understanding of Frida Kahlo, the person as well as the paintings, requires a setting aside of conventional thoughts. She was a revolutionary artist born amidst political chaos in her homeland. Her stormy, passionate relationship with famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera survived infidelities, the pressures of careers, divorce, remarriage, Frida’s bi-sexual affairs, her poor health and her inability to have children. Frida once said: “I suffered two grave accidents in my life… One in which a streetcar knocked me down and the other was Diego.” The streetcar accident left her crippled physically and Rivera crippled her emotionally. Although her life on this earth was brief and quite often turbulent and painful, she left with a legacy of art that rivals all others. Come along and watch the movie of Frida and Diego’s life followed by the visit of their works, who inspired the motion picture and literary worlds with their oeuvre and unconventional lives.

programs Enjoy a delightful lunch at Circle...

A documentary screening

Have you ever tasted the delicious food at the newly renovated Brasserie Circle in Yenikoy? If not, we invite you to a cooking demonstration and lunch at Circle, with Metin Sariyer, Istanbul’s well known restaurateur. He was educated at the famous Hotel Management School in Glion, Switzerland and has worked in Switzerland and France for many years.

This documentary is about Turkish young people who are invisible to the policy and decision makers across Britain and shines a bright light on the contemporary issues affecting many throughout the country. The film asserts that the lack of transparency in official statistics means that the needs and aspirations of Turkish youth are being ignored and not taken into account. It further explores how they feel about their parents’ country of origin, and their sense of belonging, identity, religion, culture and about Britain itself. Turkish youth are interviewed in both Turkey and Britain about their experiences regarding citizenship, nationality, their Turkish-British identity, what they think about role models and their experience with prejudice.

Brasserie Circle’s location is right on the Bosphorus, so while eating the delicious food you can also watch the passing boats and seagulls. Circle’s menu consists of a wide variety of international dishes - Mr. Sariyer is eager to prepare and share some of his delicious food with you. Special demonstration menu includes: Vegetable salad with vinaigrette sauce Salmon on a spinach bed with tasty lemon sauce Spaghetti with shrimps and garlic-tomato sauce Napoleon millefeuille pastry After this pleasant lunch you will have the possibility to promenade along the beautiful Bosphorus or stroll around in the charmingly authentic village of Yenikoy.

Suncut Productions, a boutique ‘not for profit’ independent production company based in London, researched, directed and produced this documentary. Suncut successfully managed another ground breaking first when it premiered its first short film at London’s City Hall with the Mayor of London in 2006. Following this, an exhibition entitled ‘Turks in London’ was showcased at the European Parliament, Brussels in 2007, to much acclaim. An extract about it can be read on the BBC news website. Semra Eren-Nijhar, an internationally renowned sociologist who has researched social issues in the UK, Europe and Turkey for the last 23 years, directed and produced this documentary along with Ersin Atlı, who has been active in the field for the last 8 years. programs Acupuncture with Edith Heidelberger

Galata Fashion/Design Week

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing which has been practiced in the East for thousands of years.

You may have noticed that the Galata neighborhood is becoming a popular district, filled with trendy design studios, boutiques, vintage stores and cafes. We would like to invite you to join our Galata Fashion/Design Tour as we explore the beauty and creativity on display.

According to traditional Chinese Medicine, our health is dependent on the body’s vital energy, known as Qi, moving smoothly through a series of channels beneath the skin. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors, including emotional states poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, poisons, trauma and infections. By inserting fine needles into specific points along the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance and harmony. Edith Heidelberger, who will be giving the workshop, trained in acupuncture at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in both TCM and Five Element constitutional styles of acupuncture. She has undertaken postgraduate study at the International Institute of Acupuncture in Colombo/Sri Lanka. Edith has trained as a Reflexologist with the International Institute of Reflexology (UK) and has graduated as Master practitioner in Tui Na from the International Body Harmonics Centre (UK). Edith’s areas of special interest include; »» »» »» »» »»

We will start with visits to Arzu Kaprol, Aida Pekin and Bahar Korcan, beautifuly decorated fashion stores. The owners (and designers), welcome you to their place and invite you to learn more about their passion and vision for Turkish fashion design. Share a cup of tea and a snack, and check out the latest clothes and accessories for the new season. They will be more than happy to assist you and give you professional style advice. Afterwards we head towards Serdar-ı Ekrem, the little lane on your left when you are facing the front of Galata Tower. Many Turkish designers have found their new homes in cozy, tiny shops there. Check out the little boutiques and design studios offering remarkable pottery, exceptional jewellers or one of the charming little cafes in which our Galata Fashion Tour can come to an end. programs Istanbul@nite... Nomads Istanbul...

A tour of French flavours

The location of Nomads is perfect – on the Bosphorus right next to supperclub and across the street from Club Reina. In evenings the restaurant functions as a nightclub and lounge, featuring an exotic live show. Nomads Istanbul, like the original Amsterdam location, presents a world of fairy tales behind its doors. Nomads is a European concept based on Eastern culture, bringing European style and flair to the interior and the cuisine. Result: an excellent place where you can be as comfortable as you are in your own home yet still evoking the feeling of being in a far away distant land.

Please come join Laure and Patricia while they transport you on a quick trip through French tastes.

Everything in the restaurant is specially designed and produced in Morocco and Egypt. This makes every corner of Nomads unique and mystical, while at the same time being warm and familiar. You lie on soft sofas like a king and if you wish, you sip your drink under the spectacular lights of the bar, decorated with hundreds of handmade exotic Arabian lamps.

You will learn how to prepare: Starters: »» Apéro Mini-quiches varies »» Bisque de crevettes »» Crème de légume de saison Main Course: »» Boeuf bourguignon »» Poulet à la moutarde, saveur estragon et champignons »» Pommes vapeur »» Salade verte Desserts: »» Tarte Tatin »» Cannelés »» Salade de fruits

The first international Nomads is designed by architectural firm Concrete. While based on Nomads Amsterdam, Nomads Istanbul’s design reflects a classical Arabic house with elements of modern Turkish culture.

programs LALE walk & brunch at Emirgan Park

Istanbul @ nite... X

Every spring, Istanbul comes alive with brilliant splashes of color everywhere you look! It’s time for the Istanbul Tulip Festival!

X, located in IKSV’s (Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts) new building in Şişhane, became the trendiest restaurant in Istanbul the moment it opened. Located on the top floors of the recently renovated Deniz Palas, the two story venue offers lovely views of the Halic Bay from its indoor and outdoor seating areas. The decor is eclectic and the menu includes selections from international cuisine. Your mouth will be just as tantalized as your eyes, for the food at X is known to be of wonderful quality.

The tulip is one of Istanbul’s traditional symbols. Brought to the city from Central Asia centuries ago, it was admired and cultivated here until the craze for tulips became a mania! The first “Tulip Mania” occurred way back in the 1500`s, when it was seen as a symbol of wealth and prestige during the Ottoman Empire. The best place to view the tulips these days is certainly the Emirgan Korusu (Emirgan Park) in Emirgan along the Bosphorus, one of the largest public parks in Istanbul. So come along and join us as we stroll through the different floral displays and admire breathtaking views of the Bosphorus!

So if you want to celebrate culture, arts and fine dining along with DJ music in a lively atmosphere with a dreamy view come join us (with or without a partner) and let’s enjoy this evening together.

After our walk, we shall enjoy a nice brunch at Emirgan`s well known “Mehtap Cafe”, a short walk from Emirgan Park. This will definitely be an experience not to forget!

Book Club 1 News

Our January book, The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, is partly set in Mexico in the 1930s and early 40s and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are characters in the novel . The second half of this long story is set in the USA in a small town in North Carolina, during the 1940s and includes the period of the McCarthy witch hunts in America. The main thread of the story follows the life of William Shepherd, an American taken to Mexico as a child by his feckless mother and who later returns to live in the USA until hounded back to Mexico during the witch hunts. The story begins and ends neatly at the same spot, a small coastal town in Mexico with a mysterious underwater cave, the lacuna of the title. Some found that the book was slow to get into but that it gradually became gripping. This was one of those novels in which the reader learns a great deal, in this case about Kahlo and Rivera and the life and death of Trotsky in Mexico, and about the McCarthy witch hunts and how they affected ordinary US citizens. This novel was generally enjoyed by the participants who awarded it 4 stars. March: Alone in Berlin - Hans Fallada Book Club 1 Coordinator: Lesley Tahtakılıç: tahtakilic@superonline.com

CHARITY

Fundraising for charities

All charities IWI fund fall within the lines of our charity mission: “To help improve the lives of women and children in need and the under-served in Istanbul.”

T

hanks for such a successful Christmas Bazaar and other fundraising events, IWI will be able to support the below mentioned charities financially and two more are to come. In this article the charity team gladly will tell you about the different NGO’s/charities, the projects we are funding and the fantastic work these charities are doing. The level of support can range from several thousands to several ten thousands of Turkish liras. All charities we fund fall within the lines of our charity mission; “To help improve the lives of women and children in need and the under-served in Istanbul.” Every charity that meets the criteria can hand in a request for financial support. The Charity team visits and meets with the charity, to discuss the project and to help finalize the written request. Finally the IWI board approves or declines a project. Also this year the amount of request exceeded hugely the available funds, and during the board meeting of February decisions had to be taken, with the following outcome.

Sisters of the Poor in Bomonti

IWI will donate money for the renovation of several rooms in the Elderly home of the Sisters. We have a long relationship with the Sisters of the Poor, who are taking care for less endowed elderly and this in a loving and consistent way. The home is undertaking a massive project to upgrade the accommodation so that each resident has their own lavatory which greatly improves the quality and dignity of their lives.

20

Mavi Kalem

Yöret Foundation

IWI will finance the Field Work Project of Domestic Violence of Mavi Kalem. Mavi Kalem is a charity that assists rural women migrants in the working class areas of Fener and Balat. For years now Mavi Kalem helps these women to adjust to urban life, increase their understanding of health, ensure access to services and to protect their rights. The project aims at reaching out to the women, to inform them about domestic violence and to give them support through the Counseling Spot for Women, which is part of Mavi Kalem.

IWI will contribute funds for a second year in a row to SMART Summer Art Project of Yöret. Yöret is an organization that focuses on improving the status of counseling and supporting counseling students. It also focuses on the rights of children. The Summer ART programs help disadvantaged children, to give them an opportunity to meet many forms of art and cultural activities; they otherwise would not have a chance to experience. These programs will help the kids to have an alternative besides hanging out in the streets, or sitting at home during the long summer holiday break.

IZEV

IWI will pay for a part of the educational toys and materials, needed for the new educational center of IZEV in Sisli. IZEV is

March & April 2011

CHARITY a self supporting organization that helps improving the lives of children with learning disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome by offering programs and therapy. The aim of the project is to allow each child to fufill their full potential. The new educational center in Sisli will make it possible to help an even bigger group of these special children..

ST. George's Drop-In Centre

IWI will donate to food grants for the refugees at the Crimean Memorial Refugee Shelter in Beyoglu. This project is run by Father Ian of the English Chaplaincy. Father Ian is caring for the UNHCR refugee’s, who are not supported by any human help system in Turkey. The refugees, who are seeking asylum in Turkey, are supported by monthly little sums of food money for the simple reason that they are hungry. Very elementary needs are met and with little we can make a huge difference.

Pink Angels

Our Pink Angels, the IWI voluntary ladies going into Okemeydani hospital 3 days a week, are supported in the way that they can buy toys, stationary and other items for play sessions and the occasional party. The Pink Angels are able to make a real difference to the lives of the children who are being treated for cancer. Play provides a welcome distraction and both the children and their families clearly enjoy the love and attention that they receive from the Pink Angel volunteers. The Charity Team thanks you all for your contributions and reaching out to the less fortunate in Istanbul. We count on you in the future and whenever you feel you want to know more or to be more involved in charity work, do not hesitate to contact us. The owners of CY were very open to the idea and both wanted to give back to the community. I

t is no secret that Istanbul is a treasure trove of centuries old artifacts and a depository of numerous secrets yet to be discovered and revealed. As an archaeologist and historian, I have spent an appreciable period of my professional life in the pursuit of buried objects of human culture that inform us about how people lived and the material objects they used

24

in the process of structuring their lives to meet social and physical needs. Acting upon a request of his friend, Mr. Payel Güllüdere, to have a study made of the textile treasures kept in the Armenian Orthodox Church of Sts. Thaddeus and Bartholomew in Yenikapi, friend Murat Bilir of Istanbul asked me if I would be interested in studying these objects after I returned from an

extensive study of nomadic material culture in central and eastern Turkey. Ever curious and the quintessential sleuth, I proceeded, following an exploratory visit to the church, to ask Dr. Marlene Breu, a textile scholar at Western Michigan University, to join me in studying the textiles. We entered this study realizing we had come upon a treasure that was hitherto unknown in the world of art March & April 2011

and textile history, one that lay hidden in church vaults yet treasured by the Armenian faithful and clergy who use them. What we didn’t know at the outset was the great depth and breadth of the material -brilliant artifacts of great historical and artistic value- and we didn’t even have to dig for them, rather just open drawers. We were introduced to Mesrob II Mutafyan, the brilliant and charismatic Patriarch of the Armenian Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul, who then granted us permission to study all of the sacred textile objects belonging to the Patriarchate and many of the Istanbul Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul. Our labor of love required a detailed study of selected textiles. We did this by working closely with His Grace Archbishop Aram Ateşyan, who helped solve all the practical problems of viewing and photographing the pieces being kept in selected churches throughout Istanbul. The work was immense, as we photographed and catalogued the pieces and began to uncover their various histories, inscriptions and the techniques used to create them. We then began to conduct extensive interpretation of our findings. Some of the sacred treasures in our study date as far back at the 17th century, but most are the work of the 19th century. Textile objects, especially those that are used, are not only fragile, many of these precious objects were also lost in numerous fires. The results of our labor are now revealed in a book, Splendor & Pageantry: Textile Treasures from the Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul. Under the guidance and care of Nancy Öztürk of Çitlembik Publishing, the book is now available for the general public to experience the breathtakingly beautiful pieces of textile art, and appreciate the artistic products of the women artisans who produced them. The book is richly decorated with over 170 plates, including close-ups that allow the reader to experience details of the stitching techniques used and the fine artistry accomplished. One image, for example, depicts the Centurion, who was at the tomb of Christ with a surprised expression at seeing the risen Christ. His head, with carefully stitched facial details, was no more than March & April 2011

1½ cm (approximately half an inch) high. Women not only used their accomplished needlework techniques to create the objects, they also infused their needlework with their own visions and artistic sense, finding an avenue of self-expression. Scenes of important events in the life of Christ and defining moments in Armenian Christian history are found on church vestments, among them copes, mitres, stoles, and crowns; and altar curtains, banners, chalice veils and more. They are at once forms of artistic expressions of the makers with varying levels of skill with needle and thread, block printing, and paint, and a synthesis of symbolic forms reflecting Anatolia and a rich artistic past that blends Anatolian, Byzantine, Caucasian, Turkic and Mongolian styles, and eventually reflecting the emergence of European design movements, which in time became incorporated into Ottoman art as well. Among the designs exhibited, the women created miniatures with silk floss and tiny needles, the details as precise and small as to require a magnifying glass, and rivaling the miniature traditions in manuscript production. The sacred objects illustrate pious acts and personal statements of faith in donating items to the church, often confirmed by inscriptions included on the items. While the making of embroidered cloth was primarily the domain of women in their homes, it was one of the few means of self-expression for women and participation in a significant way in their churches. The objects were of great religious significance and held a place of honor in the religious rituals, showing scenes and icons of the Christian faith that added depth to the Divine Liturgy.

Inscriptions on many of the textiles give insight into the donor’s desire to create a legacy for her family by honoring the living and the dead. They are extremely important as historical documents of social and historical markers and events. They illustrate the interconnection between material culture, social identity, artisanship and communal belief. Dr. Breu and I are pleased to offer this book for the readers’ enjoyment and enlightenment. They will be rewarded with magnificent images of the artifacts, and substantial dialogue about the objects’ context within the social, cultural, political and economic parameters within which they were produced. The book is a tribute to the legacy of those who produced the artifacts, whose self expression, artistry, skill and devotion to their religious community made a great contribution to the art, history and culture of not only their churches but to Istanbul as well. Dr. Ron Marchese College of Liberal Arts The University of Minnesota at Duluth Dr. Marlene R. Breu Emeritus Professor Western Michigan University

We can get feedback on our work, we can respond to customers in a public forum and demonstrate the quality of our service, we can meet and learn from others who are interested in the same things, and we can share our best discoveries on the web with our own networks.

We started with a round of introductions and got an overview of the various enterprises run or being developed by IPWIN members. We heard distinct stories, and overlapping concerns. “How can I sell my service when the local market doesn’t value it yet?” “How much of myself should I expose?” “I had to take time off to raise my family, and we moved a lot but I want to get a career started in Istanbul.” “How do I present my company, my product, my idea, my brand?” “I run multiple businesses, should I merge them in one site or have separate Facebook pages?” “Which language should I blog in, how do I decide if French or Spanish is best?” “I’m trying to figure out what new business is going to last.”

A successful business provides a product or service that solves a problem or fills a need. Creative entrepreneurs design offerings based on their personal inclinations, skills and talents. Often these develop out of a need to live and work in non-traditional situations. Social media is a wonderful vehicle to build professional projects on the web regardless of your location, time or language constraints. Creative entrepreneurship is a perfect solution to the problem faced by people who move around a lot or live in cultures not their own. It’s how to “bloom where you’re planted,” as Tara’s Turquoise Poppy catchphrase suggests.

Here are some of the issues we discussed during the meeting.

Coined by Anastasia for global citizens to feel at home, a global niche is where you uniquely belong in the world, both personally and professionally. Your sweetspot. A place occupied completely and perfectly by you -- so naturally there are no competitors, there are only neighbors. It’s where you can operate to your potential, and embrace all the worlds you love to belong to. Finding your global niche is part of being a successful creative entrepreneur.

Why is social media important today? Social media used professionally is an unrivaled way to become visible to a global audience at very low cost, by building a virtual network and sharing your expertise. People now want to do business with people, not faceless corporations. Even big companies are now trying to appear “more human”. Solo entrepreneurs everywhere can thrive in this new online environment. What does the ‘social’ part of social media mean? It means user-generated web content -- as opposed to static web pages -- that allows us to interact with each other through various web technologies. Think of “liking” a Facebook page, or tweeting

What is creative entrepreneurship?

What is a global niche?

How do I define my profile on the net? Building your global niche -- in this case, a professional web platform -- involves uncovering your place in the world and defining that place on the web. Inevitably one of the first steps in establishing your digital profile is communicating who you are in a way that others can relate to and may include using text, images, audio March & April 2011

IPWIN or video. For those who are in the process of self-discovery, social media is an extremely useful tool to explore and have conversations with like-minded global citizens. Does being accessible on the web require extensive personal exposure? Social media facilitates your interaction with others. People want to know who you are before connecting with you whether personally or professionally, help them find ways to relate to you. You’re not required to share private information that might compromise your security. By using a clear photo of yourself in your profile and including a link to your hub site people can learn exactly what you want them to know. (Don’t know what a hub site is? Find out in Tara and Anastasia’s free email tutorials.) How can I find potential clients, customers and collaborators using social media? Your ideal customer or client (or employer, if you’re a job seeker!) finds you by entering specific keywords into a search engine like Google. By entering these keywords yourself you’ll learn where you rank amidst the competition and you’ll also see where conversations relevant to your niche are taking place around the web. Social media enables you to monitor these conversations (with tools like Twitter and Google alerts) and participate in them with your own ideas, expertise and professional solutions.

ent herself as a multifaceted artist, graphic designer, writer, blogger and handbag designer. Rose was able to see that she needed a unified platform to integrate her work and audiences in one place. Within three months of completing the program she was able to craft her own solution at the site Love, Rose. This IPWIN workshop was very motivational and informative and the spirit is still present. Our members have already asked us to organize a follow-up event! Tara and Anastasia provided the participants with free, on-going tutorials by email which everyone in IWI can access by signing up for their “Build your global niche” mailing list. They’ll also alert you to upcoming mastermind sessions and other resources that will help you get serious on the web. How do I fit social media into my work day? Social media is useful to creative entrepreneurs because it allows you to work in a way that suits your lifestyle. Setting your own schedule for publishing content as well as interacting on sites like Facebook and Twitter means you can work at your own pace. Keep your posts short and “mindcast” rather than “lifecast”. Share important thoughts, what you are reading, what moves you -- not mundane things like what you had for breakfast. Give your network value through the things you share. Use automation and syndication services to reach relevant audiences at key times around the world -- without actually working around the clock! What is my ROI for the time I spend using social media? Using social media to build your network and reputation is an investment in yourself. The time you dedicate will pay off when you want to sell your product or service - whether it’s a book, a necklace or a coaching program. Use social media to educate yourself and stay on the cutting edge of your field. In today’s market, trust and attention are valuable commodities that you can only develop by being well-informed, authentic and providing useful, accessible content. What is the Mastermind Program for Creative Entrepreneurs? Anastasia and Tara’s mastermind program brings people together into a virtual work group (conducted on LinkedIn over a few weeks), where each participant contributes to the solution of a problem; like a combination of a brainstorming session and focus group. The success of this technique for creative entrepreneurs relies on the diverse expertise of the group, and your connection to peers you can continue to grow with. Artist, illustrator and writer Rose Deniz demonstrated the power of the mastermind program when she described how her creative business changed after participating in Tara and Anastasia’s “Build your global niche” program. What makes us tick? Spring is a good time to wipe the slate clean and start afresh with a good old spring clean in terms of our bodies, our minds and our spirits!

I

n this modern age we are busy bees rushing, doing, getting to one place, finishing a task and moving on to the next task with rarely time for a second glance at …ourselves. We have responsibilities to our families; to husbands, to partners, to lovers, to our children. We have responsibilities outside of our families whether it be in the workplace, in our social groups or our voluntary work. We let the clock go tick-tock, tick-tock… Like the white rabbit in ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’, especially here in Istanbul… “I’m late, I’m late for a very important date. No time to say ‘Goodbye!’ ‘Hello!’ I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!” When we do think about our health, it is invariably when “something has gone wrong.” We feel unwell or we are a bit under the weather. We don’t have enough energy or we just can’t seem to shake off that cold, virus, sore throat…. (Insert whatever it is that makes you feel not quite that 100% sparkling self, that you would normally take for granted). What is health, anyway? For you? Is it something physical? Is it something mental? Could it be something spiritual? Can it be a healthy combination of the three? The same can be asked about fitness. It’s one thing to run three times a week. Or it might be Pilates, Yoga, or a walk along the Bosphorus. If it is fitting these activities into an already tight schedule, you might not be benefiting from them as much as you could. Again, fitness is what, exactly? Is it something physical, mental or spiritual? Can it again be a combination of the three? And then there is the meditation… How does that work in terms of body, mind and spirit? Is it healthy? Does it enable me to be fit? Of course the answers are all “Yes”, but how do we get there in this busy city in our busy lives with all of our other responsibilities? The answer lies within… Deep, deep, within ourselves. How much time do we give to other people in our week? Tick-Tock, tick-tock, tick-tock. How much time do we give to ourselves? Is it enough time? Do we need more? Perhaps everything is in a perfect balance; perhaps not. Ponder there for a minute. Breathe in. Breathe out. And be honest with yourself. No one else needs to know. It is not a pass or fail question. How much time do you give to yourself to be… Healthy? And to stay healthy? To be fit? And to stay fit? And to meditate on yourself, your life, and those around you? How well do you know yourself? How much do you love yourself? How much do you accept yourself? These are all the big questions. How comfortable do you feel about your own answers? For me, the truth of the matter is about changing the things about myself that I don’t like, finding a way to accept the things in my life that I would sometimes rather not acknowledge were there and then looking in the mirror and seeing the things about myself that I can truly love and accept as wonderful in my life. Being positive isn’t always easy. Still too often that doubting Thomas voice can get at me… “You are not good enough…” Sometimes it takes all my energy to acknowledge the doubt is there and that I need to take stock of me… Again.

28

This lot takes time. Lots and lots of time. The clock ticks. The clock tocks. Life goes on at a terrific pace and it is our challenge to ourselves to say “STOP!” “LOOK!” “LISTEN!” and then say… What is important to me? Where am I? What am I? Who am I? How am I? Why am I here? When am I really me? Spring is a good time to wipe the slate clean and start afresh with a good old spring clean in terms of our bodies, our minds and our spirits! To see where our priorities lie. To find out our aims, our desires and our goals. When that happens life is full of new potentials… and then it is important to find the time to ‘Do’ it and to ‘Become’ what it is that you want to be. Because our lives are so hectic, I think it is true to say that we tend to feel more comfortable with ourselves when we are “doing” something than stopping and simply ‘being’. When it was first suggested that meditation might help me “find myself” all I wanted to do was run 100km in the other direction. Me? Meditate? Are you kidding? Now, of course, it is an integral part of my life, just as it is with listening to my body and “noticing” when it is not quite as healthy as it could be. The same is true with my fitness. If one part of me is not in balance with the rest of me, then I am simply not in balance. What I have found to work for me is a type of meditative movement… flow of energy and motion that allows me to unwind on a physical, a mental and a spiritual level. As a dancer, I found that just sitting and meditating was not enough; as someone who tries to be fit, at times I found that the gym just wasn’t doing it for me, and I need every part of my being to be in harmony if I am to be healthy and fit on all levels. I love dance. I love movement. I love stretching. I love whirling around and letting myself go. I love playing with rhythm. Inspirational movement can be ecstatic. It can take us into another world; it is when our body and mind and spirit can come together and that is when the magic can take hold. Just as our bodies and our characters are unique so are our movements and the way that we express ourselves in dance. It gives me no greater pleasure to see someone dance who has not moved on her own for years. I look forward to grabbing an hour on my own in my living room at home and knowing I will not be disturbed, so that I can put some music on and do what I need to do, be what I need to be and stop only when I know that I am back in balance again. It is not about pirouettes, triplets and perfect silhouettes; it is about us dancing with life, dancing with our souls and giving us that little bit of extra space out of time to completely let ourselves go! If you are interested, why not give it a go? Cheryl will be giving ‘Meditative Movement and Motion’ workshops at International Training Institute, I. Levent, Istanbul. Cheryl Godfrey Ross

This is one of the first poems I ever wrote, several years ago now. It was dedicated to one of my muses; to one of the best dance teachers I have ever had the privilege of working with. And not only that, she is also one of the best dancers I have ever seen perform, too. To be both a wonderful dancer and also to be a great teacher… That is a great gift, indeed. I gave a poetry reading at Molly’s Café, just behind the entrance to the Galata Tower in Camekan Sokak, No. 7 on Saturday 22nd January, 2011 at 4.30pm. Some of you were there… Thank you for coming. And thank you for all of the constructive feedback. It has given me a lot of food for thought… This is a poem I did not read that day… It would be nice to hear what your thoughts are on this one, too. I plan to do my next poetry reading some time in May 2011. I will keep you posted. In the meantime, may the spring air spring us all into action, in this season of rebirth, hope and Joy.

The Dancer Movement flows with beauty lithe The dancer glides beyond the surface of the floor to a nether world of emotion--To pain, lust, thirst and hunger; a place to where we, the audience cannot journey. Cannot understand. Cannot perceive. But she does not drown in these extremities. The dancer can wear a mask of purity and perfection to enchant us. To steal us. To perform her great dream created by her prancing, Created by her stretched limbs. Created in her demands for extremes of physical moves of perfection. She is mastered by her muse. A slave to its’ relentless, demanding, unceasing rhythm. Her heart is beating fast. Control is the key. To retain the perfection of the performance- no breaking down at any cost. This side we are not supposed to see. Limitations are tested; age and time are now the foe. But the dancer does not halt, or look back to take a look at her soul. It lays in wait in the shadows when her defences are finally down to attack when she’s performing. Her defences tumble down. She breaks through the barrier into the storm Where her dancer’s soul awaits to weep and warn of the impending death …….. If the dancer takes no heed. Her heart must rule her head if she is to succeed. To tear down the goal posts and balance in the storm. Reach out to seize immortality, reborn.

Her soul has its’ revenge. Takes full control of the stage. Soul and performer merge into a harmonious rage. The audience stand, alerted to this show. A spectacular that has never been seenFireworks explode as feet skim the floor. The dancer is entranced; her soul has helped her grow. From great, to indisputable brilliance. It is an unbelievable show. Engulfed, embraced, the ceiling explodes. She transcends to the night sky, twinkling and dazzling, The only dancer gliding among the stars. The audience salutes her: Hysteria. History made. They have seen the perfection: want to join the cascade. The dancer cries silently, joined with her soul at last. Her audience is now with her. The illusion is finally past. They are all reunited in their dance of life. The dancer now sees she is their mirror, shining, gleaming and bright. Reflecting their lust to dance with life. Her soul is her communion, her saviour and her friend. She sees the picture clearly now, not an enemy, but a friend. Her invisible partner- her source of inspirational and creative desires. Her body feels no pain now. Barriers explode from view. She has been to her Hell and back to perform this piece for you. She thanks you, her audience, and to her soul re-found. Bows….. Applause……. Crescendos abound. Faultless perfection. Frontiers broken. Imperceptibly. No critic can fault what was witnessed tonight. The performance of a lifetime. But only the dancer knows why.

The dancer collapses. A limp, wimpy weed. Cannot get up. She is forced to concede. Stripped naked. March & April 2011

KEEPING YOUR LIFE ON TRACK WITH A LIFE COACH

Coaching will help you work out where you want to go and plan strategies to get you there. It will also help you to understand what is important in your life and what fulfillment is for you.

T

hey are people who don’t necessarily give you advice. And yet, they help you find that missing “piece” of the puzzle in the area of relationships, career, finance or health. They aren’t necessarily in the field of expertise that you are searching to learn more about. And yet, they motivate you to get into action to find what you look for. They are also not there to solve psychological problems one might have. That’s the therapists’ job. Yet they have in their toolbox some techniques derived from clinical psychology… And your overall life seems to improve so much. These people are able to help you achieve your “best” self, help you find solutions and make important decisions you’ve been delaying for long. So, who are they, really? Most of you may have already guessed; these people are life coaches . Yes, they will help you find the answers that are right for you.

34

How? By listening to you on a deep, intuitive level and asking you what we call “powerful” questions that increase your awareness and bring out the answers that are lying within you. Coaching will help you work out where you want to go and plan strategies to get you there. It will also help you to understand what is important in your life and what fulfillment is for you. It could be about developing specific skills, enhancing your effectiveness in a present job, planning and implementing a career path or managing stress, work/life balance, and clarifying personal values. Where does coaching come from? The business world started to look at sports coaching in the 1960s and they adapted the techniques for use in training and development. These techniques have been developed and enhanced and today coaching is one of the fastest growing strategies used by CEOs, entrepreneurs, professionals, people in the midst of a career change and others working on improving their life issues.

The issues could be: Communication skills Relationships Parenting skills Dealing with conflict Increasing productivity The difference between coaching and therapy? Coaching deals with people who are basically functional. A therapist is the one to seek if one has depression or has high levels of anxiety. In therapy, the question that is frequently asked is “Why?”, and focus is more on the past, whereas in coaching the questions are “What?” and “How?” Coaching is very future oriented, and focuses more on solutions than problems. How does coaching work? In the first introductory session (which is generally a free session), you are asked to rate areas in your life and talk about the changes you want to make. Then together you plan on strategies and actions to reach your goal(s). At the end of the session, the

coachee has some certain tasks to accomplish before the next session. Usually, the sessions are one or two weeks apart. The standard amount of time is 12 sessions in reaching one’s goals although this might vary. You may also do telephone sessions or Skype sessions with your coach if meeting in person isn’t an option. Usually, a coach would charge less for telephone and Skype sessions. A mini coaching session here: Rate yourself from 1-10 in these areas of life below... • Physical health • Money/Finances • Emotional Life • Family life • Social Life • Working Life • Career Development • Personal Growth And then after determining where you scored low, choose 2 or at most 3 areas to work on. Now, write down your top-most needs and values (about 3-5 ) for each area you chose. To give a few examples: Security, belonging, excitement, recognition, honesty, love, joy, success, respect, participation, humour, spirituality, creativity; to name just a few. You may add as many things as you like to this list. So, you have accomplished the first step. Well done!

Normally, the next to step in a session would be to form a Specific, Measurable, Attractive, Realistic and Time-framed sentence that describes your goal. Then you are ready to go on your journey with your coach accompanying you on the way. Coaching is a process that enriches one’s life to a great extent. If you are interested in doing an introductory session or attend a ‘Coaching Yourself’ workshop please e-mail: lifecoach@yaseminbalci.com

oday a friend and I had the pleasure of lunch at Cok Cok Thai. Although the location is not picturesque, the restaurant is situated on Tepebasi Meşrutiyet Cadessi, across from the TRT building which is disappointingly unattractive in an area where there are many old and imposing ones from the late 19th and early 20th century, it is however in a popular area of town, not far from the

Once inside the restaurant the atmosphere is quite relaxed and informal and we were warmly greeted by the friendly manager Derya Tufan whom we discovered had recently ended a career as a cabin crew for Emirates Airlines.Having travelled the world and serving business class customers in A380s Derya has the skills to meet the needs of

bustle of the street below. Cok Cok is also known for its cocktails, although as it was lunchtime I did not try! Also, on this floor there was evidence of a good sound system and we were informed that on occasions when the venue is booked for a party they have been known to push back the tables at the end of the evening to create a makeshift dance floor where diners can continue to party into the small hours. We were presented with three menus and my initial thought was that this may be excessive but on perusal it was not overwhelming, one is the “a la carte” showing the full selection of what is on offer, there is also a “set lunch menu” with a few select choices including Thai soups followed by a sample sate and fish cakes and then a number of main courses to choose from all for 32tl (a glass of wine is included with

There is room for 60 to 70 diners, mostly in groups of four and upstairs there is a larger table that can seat groups of up to 12 guests together. Finally on a separate menu which is changed each month were the “chef’s recommendations”, we were informed that all the authentic Thai ingredients were sourced in Thailand and the flavoursome food certainly backed this up. We sampled soups, which were reassuringly spicy, as one would expect, the restaurant offer you the choice of mild, medium and hot. This was followed by chicken sate and small fish

cakes that were served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce and a mild curry sauce. After, we taste delicious Thai green curry, beef in oyster sauce served with stir fried vegetables, barbeque chicken with a bright colourful carrot salad topped with a few peanuts and dressed in a slightly spicy sauce which was not only stunning to look at but tasted delightful and another healthier option was the salmon served on mung bean noodles which was flavoursome and light. Although we did not sample the deserts on visiting the kitchens we discovered that there were two banana and coconut pies baking in the oven – I look forward to sampling this on my next visit. how to prepare a three course Thai meal. Of course the meal is then eaten along with a glass of wine. The workshops cost 100TL and can be arranged through the Cok Cok Thai’s website. It was a delight to meet the chef Ms Nutjarin Pasri, known as Nuch, a lady who has a history of success in her country having written books about her craft, featured in a number of cooking programmes and worked in the Thai royal kitchens as well as the homes of Thai ambassadors. The food that they produce certainly back up her celebrity status it being fresh, light and littered with distinctive Thai flavours, the result not only of the expertise in her kitchen but also the authentic Thai ingredients which are regularly shipped over especially. This lady is without a doubt the main reason for making this restaurant worth a visit and I think that the memorable food and the distinctive flavour as well as the relaxed atmosphere will drive you to return bringing your friends along to share the experience. You may even have an opportunity to meet Nuch who has a smile that lights up the room perhaps this is the secret of her success? The proprietors are currently in the process

İKSV: Artistic backbone of Istanbul

Sultan’s Place: Beauty Corner

One of the most established culture and arts organisations in Turkey, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) was founded in 1973 by seventeen businessmen and art enthusiasts who gathered under the leadership of Nejat Eczacıbaşı, with the aim of organising an international arts festival in Istanbul. The first international Istanbul Festival covered a period of one and a half months and focused mainly on classical music. Soon after, it included other artistic fields in its programme such as film screenings, theatre productions, jazz and ballet performances, and art exhibitions held in historic venues. As public interest grew, groups of events organised in different artistic disciplines gradually evolved into distinct festivals. Today, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts organises six international cultural and artistic events, including the Istanbul Festivals of Music, Film, Theatre and Jazz, the Istanbul Biennal and the Istanbul Design Biennal. Since 2010, The Foundation also hosts cultural and artistic events in its own performance venue, Salon, all through the year. In 2011, İKSV prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Istanbul Film Festival. The 30th edition of the festival will be held between 2nd and 17th April. The Istanbul Music Festival will be held between 4th and 29th of June, followed by the Istanbul Jazz Festival between 1st and 18th of July, and finally the 12th Istanbul Biennial between 17th of September and 13th of November. The foundation will also continue organising special events throughout the year, manage the Pavilion of Turkey at this year’s Venice Biennale, and hold the 10th edition of the October film week, Filmekimi. But it first starts with having the right color and cut to match your skin tone and face shape. Every woman can’t have the same color and cut. That’s why a professional stylist has to look at your skin tone and face shape in order to determine what would look best for you. Generally speaking, olive-toned skin needs a warm hair color that lightens up the face. But pinkish skin can have either a cool or warm color. For hair length, if you have a long face and neck, a blunt cut looks best. For round faces, you’re lucky as you can wear almost any hairstyle. Hair, hair, hair… It is such a defining part of a woman. Think back to the days of Cleopatra where striking attraction of her black hair and blunt bangs caught all the right kind of attention. To get the right job done right, it is important that your stylist understands exactly what you want. It can be difficult to find this in Istanbul if Turkish is not your native language. But don’t lose faith; it is possible! And when you find this, you will feel beautiful and be very happy. Sultan’s Place beauty salon, owned by Cangül Demir, is located in Cihangir. Cangül ran a beauty salon in New York for 20 years before returning to Istanbul. She is happy to help you in English to achieve ultimate happiness with your hair. Joy of spring! Spring is the best time to live up to those new years resolutions we made during the winter.

I

ts been a pretty mild winter for us here in Istanbul... But there is always a need for spring and the livliness it brings. Now it is time for days to get longer and to see some leaves on those trees! Spring is the best time to live up to those new years resolutions we made during the winter. In fact I think it would be more fitting to have a spring resolution due to the simple fact that no one feels like doing anything when it is dull, damp and grey outside. When the sun is shining and the skies are clear, we all feel more optimistic and energetic and ready to get up and go. It’s hard to have that same spirit when it’s dismall outside. I definately suffer from the winter blues so that is why I can’t wait to feel like my old self again. There are actually vitamins for seasonal slumps, but in addition to those, you need a friend that can give you a little nudge now and then to get up and get going! I am just that friend ladies! So this spring I want to see you and your kids out and about. Soon summer will be here and most of us will go our separate ways for a while, but until then let's meet and enjoy what the IWI and İstanbul has to offer. This month, we have a special program just for the FATHERS, that’s right, a father daughter dance. In April there will be an easter egg decorating and egg hunt activity for families to join. So please come and take advantage of these activities! *IWI Mums N Kids Coordinator The Mums ‘N Kids Team, 2010 - 2011 Jasmine Yüzer jasmine@iwi-tr.org 0533 717 2889 Gigi Aksu gaksu05@yahoo.com 0530 645 9494

Miss Honey Mustard! When IWI Mums ‘n Kids Coordinator Jasmine Yüzer couldn’t find the salad sauce to her taste here in Turkey, she started trying out her own recipes… The result is, first place in The Salad Bar contest at The IWI Christmas Bazaar. Here, she shares her experience and her award-winning recipe with Lale readers…

R

eal, Macro Center and Migros have begun to stock quite a few salad dressings. However I started making salad sauces shortly after my arrival here in 2000 after missing the wonderful array of dressings we have in the States. I was a ranch and blue-cheese girl myself. It was hard for me to just put olive oil and lemon on my salads here, so I found myself continually ordering Ceaser Salads. Then I gradually started adding cheese, blue and feta with mayonnaise and the standard lemon and olive oil and I was pleasantly surprised that it actually tasted like real dressing. Gradually I started to add things to the mix and Viola! This year after being asked by Ayşe Yücel, I made a salad for the salad bar at the Christmas Bazaar. When I got my salad over the station and saw all of the other colorful and delicious looking salads, I erased any hope that I could possibly win the lunch for 2 at the House Café (a place that I love for their heavenly warm-chocolate brownie with real vanilla ice cream). I was manning the Mums ‘n Kids Gymboree Corner, chatting with someone, when my friend D comes over and tells me that I’ve won the best salad, I couldn’t believe her, so I asked if she was sure that they said Jasmine and not Yasemin or something. When she then assured me that it was my salad that won, I must admit that I jumped 3 feet up in the air. Then I half walked, half skipped to where the judges were, still with some doubt in my mind. When they indeed had my salad bowl in hand, I was ecstatic! I am sure all thirty-two of my teeth were on display! The two men then put the medal around my neck and handed me a brunch for 2 at the Hilton Rooftop, instead of the House Café lunch, it was like I had won the lottery or became Miss America! I was so hyped-up all day long that I didn’t take the medal from around my neck and made it a point to showcase it everyone I came into contact with the rest of the day at the Bazaar. I should have put it in my purse though, because when I got into the car to go home, I looked down and noticed that it was gone. The white and red ribbon was there, but my beautiful gilded medal bearing witness to my triumph was gone! My husband was the first person I called to announce that I had won, but when I arrived home dawning just t a ribbon, he questioned the validity of my claim of

50

good fortune. I called Suzy Kalutti to ask her to keep an eye out for the medal. But I new the request was in vain and I am sure that it is lying in a pile of garbage somewhere on the outskirts of the city. Ayşe Yücel wouldn’t leave me like a queen without a crown, so she went all the way to the Les Chaines des Rotiesseurs headquarters in Nişantaşı to acquire another medal and in addition, an official certificate declaring me the first place winner, The Salad Chef Extraordinairé! I have the certificate prominently placed in my kitchen, so I can point to it when my husband questions or complains about my cooking skills.

So here is the recipe to The Honey Mustard Crunch Salad… Note about the taste: The sauce is sweet and garlicky at the same time. Sorry no measurements available, add all of the ingredients to your own taste •

Crushed garlic, honey, mayonnaise, mustard, olive oil, apple vinegar, salt, pepper.

Cut chicken into tiny pieces and sautée with minced onions and pesto sauce, let it cool.

Cubes of white (feta) cheese, sundried tomatoes cut into small pieces, canned corn, walnuts and almonds.

Prepare a mixture of greens like iceberg lettuce, romaine, and spinach.

Add salad into a mixing bowl, add all other ingredients and then the sauce and toss.

Add into a serving bowl and enjoy!

Ensuring books are part of growing up Previously we considered ways to encourage a lifetime love of reading in even the youngest child. This time we explore how to promote a healthy interest in books amongst youngsters of school age.

I

t is important to keep in mind that the reading habits and skills of school children need to be nurtured by both teacher and parent alike. Books are not only a tool for the classroom. They can also be a wonderful source of home entertainment through which siblings and families can bond and share mutual interests. Pleasure reading will also enhance a youngster’s literacy skills without them even realising it. Books are often the only way children have of expanding their vocabulary, because regular daily conversation is limited in its range of words. You might recollect how as a child you knew the meaning of particular words but didn’t know how to pronounce them as they rarely came up in conversation. They were interesting words to know and important for intellect. However, we would probably never have discovered them if it hadn’t been for reading. It is beneficial for children’s reading skills to be challenged because if they understand every word when reading their vocabulary will become insular and limited. As their studies progress these stu-

52

dents will likely experience a brain numbingly hard time reading the “classics” and Shakespeare will surely drive them to distraction. Such youngsters will also probably struggle to articulate their thoughts. This may not matter so much during those carefree school days. However, in the future it will be of concern to prospective employers! As children commence school they become more conscious of the world around them. Many will start to imitate their parents and want to do the same things adults do. This will also include reading for themselves. Some will make the transition easily, while others need a bit longer to get past the “reading aloud” stage. At this time children start to explore a wide variety of books and begin developing their own interests and tastes. Whether it’s the familiarity of comic book characters or the humour of Nate the Great, books help to develop a child’s vocabulary. Getting into the habit One way to help develop a love of books is to let children experience how enjoyable reading can be. Whether it’s books, comics, newspapers or even the back of a cereal packet over breakfast, encourage them to read daily, (preferably 20 minutes or more) rather than having a random routine.

mums ‘n kids You can keep these sessions interesting and varied by occasionally getting older siblings or grandparents involved. It is lovely to sit with a child who is beginning to read, so most adults will be happy to do it, although a little persuasion may be required for older siblings! The five finger reading test Once children start to read for themselves, there’s a simple way to decide if a particular book is suitable for them. Take your child along to your local bookshop or library and try this process: Step One: Select a book that appears to be suitable. Step Two: Turn to a random page and get the child to read. Step Three: For each word they can’t read, pronounce or don’t understand, put up a finger. Step Four: If you get to the end of the page with more than five fingers extended it means the book might be too difficult. Five fingers or fewer means the book is likely to be suitable. Of course it is OK to choose a book that is a bit more challenging than a “five finger” book, but make sure you will be around to read it aloud or together, helping out with the new words as they come along. Creative ways to give children the “reading bug”! With so many high-tech toys and games available to attract youngsters books may appear a little tame to the younger generation. Children sometimes need to be gently encouraged to spend time with books and a little imagination might be needed to get them reading. Here are a few simple and inexpensive suggestions:-

A child’s imagination knows no limits As they get older and their reading skills improve, children become even more engrossed in their favourite stories. The fact that they can manage longer sentences and have a broader vocabulary opens up all kinds of new possibilities for more engaging reading. To motivate young readers give them books that tap into their own personality and interests. Titles on hobbies, popular films and playground trends are likely to be hits. Book series also provide continuity, as youngsters like to follow the lead character’s latest adventures. What if a book is too difficult? Sometimes children will want to read a book that is a little beyond their ability, especially if it’s about their favourite subjects. As long as the subject matter is suitable there’s nothing wrong with trying a book that first appears too difficult. Often, the interest and motivation kids get from exploring subjects they enjoy will enable them to cope with more difficult text, so their skills may develop a bit faster as a result. It is helpful to remember that youngsters should be fearless about reading. Simply encourage your little one to give it a try and see what happens. After all they have nothing to lose and everything to gain! NOTE: The Tirtil Kids specialized, multi-language bookshop stocks a wide range of education books for children of all ages and grades. We also work closely with many of the top schools in Istanbul. Our experienced staff will be pleased to advise parents on book titles to meet their child’s specific needs. For those who are unable to visit our shop in Istinye Park we offer an on-line purchasing facility via our website www.tirtilkids.com.

Turn reading into part of a broader experience. If your little one enjoys books about dinosaurs take him to a pre-historic museum exhibition. Alternatively buy a kid’s archaeology kit and take a trip back in time. Play games that are reading related. There are countless fun word and spelling games on the market that will keep kids (and parents) occupied for hours on end. Flash cards and Q&A game cards are also great for passing the time on journeys or while standing inline.

* Co-owner of Tirtil Kids, the specialized multi-language children’s book shop. Tirtil Kids has relocated to: İstinye Park, Floor minus 2, İstinye, Istanbul Tel: 0212 345 5370

Use everyday events for reading opportunities. Involve the kids in reading opportunities while planning family events such as a trip to the cinema or a weekend away. Keep an eye open also for dailyreading opportunities such as menus, maps and advertisements. When travelling by car, kids can practise their alphabet skills by reading car number plates aloud. Go high-tech. Multi-platform books endeavour to bridge the gap between reading and online gaming. Further, they are designed to connect with even the most reluctant of readers. Alternatively “Flip” games can turn Nintendo DS into an interactive book, complete with on-screen pages to turn. Explore the shelves of your local bookshop. A trip to a specialized bookshop is a fun outing for children. A bookshop can be an Aladdin’s cave of discovery. The time will simply fly by as youngsters explore a vast and diverse range of books. Knowledgeable staff can offer helpful advice and recommendations.

Turkish Laws 101

Codes changed The adoption of three Codes in the Parliament will bring many changes to the daily life. Akıncı Law Office enlightens us about these changes...

T

his month we decided to change our usual format to give you a bulletin about the adoption of three major Codes. These Codes came out of Parliament in January 2011 and should come into force on different dates during 2011. We will briefly examine the changes that have been brought to the Code of Civil Procedure, the Code of Obligations and the Commercial Code. The changes to these codes will make a number of practical differences in everyday life and business from changes to the laws about renting your house, to getting a loan or being able to solve a dispute out of court. The Code of Civil Procedure was amended on the 12th January, 2011 and will enter into force on 1st October, 2011. Like most Acts of Parliament in Turkey the new Code of Civil Procedure is not detailed and sets out a basic framework. This is a characteristic of the civil law system where the laws

56

give a general outline and allow the judge a great deal of flexibility to make decision within this framework. Like the old version of the Code, the new code does not contain specific rules for alternative dispute resolutions but it does allow the judge to suggest that the parties try to reach a friendly settlement or seek an out-of-court dispute resolution method. The new Code also brings the domestic arbitration rules into harmony with the Turkish International Arbitration Code and the Model Law. Because of the new Procedural law, the use of audio-video recordings is now accepted in trials. Many more principles of procedural law are now listed explicitly and the interim legal protection, which is a problematic area in procedural law, has been redefined. Interim legal protections have been reviewed, meaning the temporary protection given by the judge before or during a trial, in order to protect a right.

To avoid any irrevocable damage, the provisions on interim measures, interim attachments and recording evidence have been carefully detailed. The authority of the various general and specific courts over partial claims, agreements on jurisdiction, preliminary objections and on-site inspections has been redefined by this law and additional types of civil law suits have been defined. The second law that has been amended is the Turkish Code of Obligations (TCO) numbered 6098 and dated 11th January, 2011 changes Turkey’s 85-year-old Code of Obligations and will enter into force on 1st July, 2012. One of the major changes that this amendment brings concerns pre-drafted and non-negotiable agreements. These are the kind of agreement that will be given by a bank, an internet service provider or insurance company etc where you have no opportunity to disagree and have to sign the March & April 2011

Karen Akıncı, LLB, Akıncı Law Office info@akinci.av.tr

Turkish Laws 101 agreement as it is. The aim of the new law is to protect the individual against such big companies. The law obliges the dominant party in the contract, such as the bank, to clearly inform the other party about the clauses that go against his or her interests and the specific consent of that party must be obtained. If the dominant party to the agreement violates this rule, any specific conditions of a given contract that harm the individual will be nullified. Moreover, if any section of such a uniform contract is not clear, or could be interpreted in a number of different ways, it will have to be interpreted according to the interests of the party who signs the contract, not the party that prepared the contract. The change in the law has also made it possible to use a “secure e-signature” in contracts and this signature will carry the same weight as a regular signature according to the new Code. Tenants have been given more protection against unscrupulous landlords. The landlord now has to bear the additional maintenance costs of the building. Additional costs are those that fall outside of the scope of regular costs and may include changing the elevator system of the building, general heating system repair, roof repair and ex-

terior insulation and painting the property. The new TCO also brings a handy solution to the problem of misbehaving tenants. The tenant is obliged to respect the building rules and if the tenant violates these regulations, the landlord may issue a 30-day notice for relief. If the tenant fails to remedy the situation, then the landlord has the right to terminate the rental agreement. Another change that has been made concerns the right to claim compensation for tort actions. The new rule allows a claim to be made within 2 years of the date of becoming aware of the damage, and who was responsible for it, and within 10 years of the date the tort occurring. Lastly the New Turkish Commercial Code will replace the current Turkish Commercial Code (“TCC”) as accepted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on 13th January, 2011. The New TCC will enter into force on 01st July, 2012. The New TCC makes essential differences to Turkish commercial law, especially in the field of Commercial Corporate law, Maritime Commerce law and Insurance law. The most fundamental change to the section on Commercial Enterprise concerns unfair competition and brings the law into

conformity with the Swiss Law on Unfair Competition. An expanded list of acts which constitute unfair competition has been given, along with standardized terms of contract. The goodwill remuneration to which the agent is entitled in the event of termination of the agency agreement, which is a necessary provision in commercial life, is now regulated under the New TCC. The Code also removed the use of commercial books by commercial enterprises as evidence before the courts. Several major changes have been made in the section on Commercial Companies in order to meet the legal and commercial needs and in accordance with the European Community’s directives. The New TCC allows the board of directors to meet online, has modified the provisions related to joint stock companies, has established a more effective auditing system and strengthened the position of shareholders. The section on Maritime Commerce has brought essential amendments to bring the law in line with international practice. In the section on Insurance Law, for the purposes of harmony, many of the provisions have been rewritten and different types of insurance have been incorporated to bring the law up to date.
