Board Letter

Laurina van Dam Dear Ladies,

takes care of families with children suffering from cancer and Medas Rehabilitasyon who delivers equipment to rehabilitation centres for spastic, mental and physical disabled children. All organizations are doing great work for the underpriviliged people in Istanbul and we are pleased we can contribute to their work by providing financial support and other forms of help, for example voluntary work done by our members. In the June/July issue of Lale you will find a complete overview of the organizations that are supported from the proceeds of the Christmas Bazaar 2011 in which many of you took part.

F

inally, it is Spring! Time to enjoy the flowers in bloom, time to enjoy a coffee outside on the terrace, time to enjoy a walk along the Bosphorus. And it is time for the annual IWI Spring Ball! Please mark the date of Saturday, May 26th in your agenda! Early this year the IWI Spring Ball committee started to work on this fundraising event and preparations are well under way now. This year’s theme is La Dolce Vita and that’s what we will do, offer you a bit of The Sweet Life. A feast with an Italian name should have an Italian location and we are proud to host this event at the Venetian Palace in Beyoğlu, with the support and presence of H. E. Ambassador of Italy, Gianpaolo Scarante and his wife, Mrs. Barbara Scarante. Needless to say, the Italian chef Carlo Bernardini will surely sweeten our lives with an exclusive Italian menu designed just for us. The evening will begin with a cocktail at 7 pm, followed by a seated dinner at 8:30 pm. From 10:30 pm onwards the after-party will start, so put on your dancing shoes. The dress code is Black Tie / Formal but we would love to see some Italian twists. And don’t forget to bring money for the silent auction! The charity that the IWI will support with the proceeds of the Ball is Hisar Anadolu Destek Derneği (HADD), a non-profit association founded by a group of Robert College (1964) classmates in April, 2010.

MAY 2012

Their aim is to improve the socio-economic means and the skills of young women in Van whose families were forced to migrate from their villages. After school hours, these young women are taught to weave kilims based on cultural and traditional techniques which enables them to generate income for their families. Also they learn about hygiene, mother and child-care, computer and other essential skills. HADD provides the young women with venues for education, production and socializing and help them to market their handmade kilims under the brand name Kilimworks. During the earthquake in October 2011, two of the kilim workshops were seriously damaged. They will be re-constructed with the help of sponsors like IWI. We hope the workshops will be soon up and running again so the girls can continue to weave beautiful kilims and continue to make a living. Should you like to learn more about HADD or be interested in buying an original piece, please visit their website: www.hadd. org.tr. Besides HADD, the IWI Charity team has visited many other organizations in the last few months. Some of the organizations have been supported by the IWI for many years such as Bomonti / The little Sisters of the Poor, SSK Okmeydani Hospital / Pink Angels, Mavi Kalem, IZEV and Yöret Vakfi. Some of the organizations we met are new to the IWI, like CÖKSEV an organization that

Please do not hesitate to contact the IWI Charity team for donations or questions about volunteer work. Our charity organizations can always use some support and you will find it is very rewarding work. In this issue of the Lale, you will find an article about the Pink Angels who spend time with children suffering from leukemia at Okmeydan Hospital. You can also become one of the women putting a smile on the faces of these children by contacting the IWI Charity Coordinators and volunteering your time once a week. Please refer to the article for details. You can simply support our charities by attending the 2012 IWI Spring Ball La Dolce Vita. Having a good time while knowing that the money raised goes to a good cause, increases the joy even more. Ticket sales start on Monday, April 23rd (for reservations and payments, please contact us at springball@iwi-tr.org). We hope to see you on Saturday, May 26th! At last, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers who helped at one of the IWI events or are helping the charities this season and hope we can count on you in the future.

programs Italian Cooking Demonstration at Restaurante Da Vittorio

Seminar: The Deepak Chopra Method of Meditation

We are gearing up for the Spring Ball, La Dolce Vita and we would like to invite you to a special Italian cooking class in keeping with the Italian theme.

Meditation can offer a person so much and Utku Oğuz, who is a fluent in English, Turkish, and Italian, is going to present a two day seminar on the benefits of meditation. He is currently the VP of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Turkey. Four years ago, some personal events led him to discover his higher self and he experienced some profound healing in his life through meditation.

Restaurante Da Vittorio is owned and operated by Vittorio Sindoni, from Palermo, Sicily who as a kid moved to New York where he first started working as a waiter in an Italian restaurant. After opening restaurants in New York and Italy, he was invited to help open Paper Moon here in Istanbul and later was invited back to open another restaurant in the W hotel. In 2009 he decided Istanbul was the place for him and he opened up his own restaurant in Beyoğlu, simply called Vittorio’s restaurant, but it sounds so much better in Italian, in fact, most words do! The restaurant is small, comfortable and quaint. It is located just two blocks down on the same side and street as the Pera Palace in Beyoğlu. This area of Galata and Pera was a place where many Genoese and Venetians lived and worked, so maybe his settling down in this area was the call of his ancestors! Vittorio and his chef Carmine Morgese will teach us their recipes and techniques for making marinara (tomato) sauce, fresh baby artichoke salad, fresh homemade Spaghetti alla Chitarra, gnocchi, and tiramisu.

He studied under Dr. Deepak Chopra and he graduated from Chopra University’s Meditation Teacher Training Program 3rd in his class. He is one of the only two Chopra teachers in the world who is actively teaching in 3 languages. He is also a classical guitar player, cook, photography enthusiast, a poet, and a history lover. Meditation is a common theme that resonates through all religions. It calls for one to focus and reflect to calm our bodies and actively relax. Living in today’s world, in such a big metropolis as Istanbul creates stress in our bodies and minds. The philosophy of meditation helps combat and control the amount of stress in our lives. Come to see how you can calm your mind and relax and focus on how to be at equilibrium. For more info visit www.meditationistanbul.com

programs Tour of Galata and Pera

Back during the Byzantine times Galata was a Genoese and Venetian trade colony. Today this area is called Karaköy and Beyoğlu. We frequent these areas for their restaurants and nightlife, but here is your chance to learn about the culture and history of this area. The owner of Paros Travel, Karni Benli, also the husband of one of our own members, will be leading us through this convoluted area. We will visit: Çiçek Pasaj, learn a little about the Galatasaray School, Balik Pazar (the fish market), St. Antuan Church, the Pera Museum, Pera Palace Hotel, go past the Italian, Dutch, Russian and Swedish Consulates, we will also get a chance to see the Venetian Palace, where this year’s IWI Spring Ball will be held. We will see the oldest subway in Europe (Tünel) and visit the Galata tower, take pictures from its terrace, head across the street to Sensus wines at the Hotel Anemon for wine and cheese and a few words about Turkish wine, then down to the ‘Wall Street’ of Turkey (Bankalar Caddesi) where we can pop in and say hello to the visiting international artists at Caravansarai and end the tour at SALT, a modern visual arts museum, where you may browse as long as you wish. Walking shoes a must! There will be time to stop for a short coffee/ snack break, but I suggest picking up a simit or a sandwich en route.

programs Spring Ball: La Dolce Vita

Life Coaching for Weight Loss and Healthy Living Workshop

La Dolce Vita is the ‘good life’. Spring is in the air, come and experience the ‘finer things in life’ this Saturday night. Get dressed up, have a few drinks, mingle, and enjoy sparkling conversation at our opening cocktail, the perfect prelude to a sumptuous 4 course Italian meal that is accompanied with live Italian classical music, wine, wine and more wine. The night is not complete without an afterparty with live entertainment and a DJ who will play all the songs to make you to dance the night away.

The title says it all: Do you want to adopt new perspectives and answers on weight loss and healthy living? Have you tried many diets and health programmes but not found one that really works long term for you? Do you still have summer clothes that you can’t get into? If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of these questions then this workshop can help you.

The Venetian Palace or Palazzo Venezia is the home of H. E. Gianpaolo Scarante, the Italian Ambassador to Turkey, and his wife Barbara. The Palazzo was initially built in the 16th century, but was later re- built in 1781, it served as the Italian Embassy, and as the consulate after 1923. Today it is the residence of the ambassador and is the perfect backdrop for this years Italian themed spring ball. This year’s ball proceeds will be donated to HADD, Hisar Anadolu Destek Dernegi, who are helping to make a difference in the lives and families of young women in Van. We hope that you will come and enjoy la dolce vita with us, you deserve it! Treat yourself to the best and help a worthy cause in the process! Please note: Limited seating.

Put aside this morning to work with Life Coach Derryn Snowdon on adopting long lasting techniques and perspectives for weight loss and healthy living. Strengthen your knowledge of nutrition and plan healthy, fun routines and learn about tasty, nutritious menus so you can enjoy the summer with confidence and without guilt. Continuing the Italian theme of this month’s Lale and IWI programs, this workshop encourages you to take a new view on what constitutes a healthy diet, including at why olive oil and red wine should be part of a weight loss programme. Plus, we’ll explore how the Italian, or perhaps better called ‘Mediterranean diet’ can promote health and happiness. Derryn worked as a chef in Switzerland, Italy and Portugal, and lived and worked in Spain as well as her in Turkey so she has vast experience of the Mediterranean cuisine. She also has a lifelong love of good food and healthy living. Having shed her extra kilos at the tender age of 18 she worked increasingly successfully to keep those extra kilos off over the years. Cooking, eating and sharing healthy food is Derryn’s passion and she will share with you at this workshop her top summer recipes. For more information please visit www.dsilifecoaching.com

Pink Angels – Get Involved! Join this caring group of ladies who spread joy to children in need.

F

or many years the Pink Angels have been doing fantastic work at the SSK Okmeydanı Hospital. A dedicated group of women spending time with children suffering from leukemia doing arts and crafts, playing and just giving the children lots of loving attention. The team is led by Angela Kuzucu and current Pink Angels are Heather, Tina, Anna, Mehpare, Neslihan, Danyelle, Isabella, Serife and Emily. Apart from their voluntary work in the hospital, the ladies have worked hard to raise funds at the Christmas Bazaar and we would like to thank them all for their time and dedication. Also we would like to thank Cynthia, Gaye and friends in the knitting group who donated things to sell at the Bazaar. During the Christmas and New Year period the Pink Angels went to the hospital in two separate groups and took cakes, refreshments and toys for the children and mums. To see the pleasure on the smiling faces of the children was a joy. Lately also the M.E.F. School and the Swedish group visited the hospital and we heard that there is hope of a new unit for the haematology in the future. The Pink Angels hope to continue their good work with a little help from our friends … yourselves! The team of volunteers visits the hospital four times a week; most of the volunteers attend the hospital once a week. New volunteers are always most welcome and it is not necessary to speak Turkish. The experience of working with the children is very rewarding. Please contact Angela for further information on 0532 7237611 or akuzucu81@gmail.com

They’ll run together, they’ll play together. Pets, no doubt, make better entertainment than TV or computer games but for how long? Therein lies the problem.

end of a pet’s life, sadly is the choice solution to the problem. With that, a child looses any respect for life. Such a child can not become a compassionate and empathetic adult. We have a lot to learn from pets. They can be wonderful companions to humans of all ages. But a child who has learned how to communicate with a pet, how to care for a pet is a happy child who has earned a friend for life and has learned the value of a good relationship. Rather than introducing a pet as a gift, if he or she is introduced as a new addition to the family because both the time is right to devote to the necessary care and team work is established with the family members for this task, I can’t think of a more fortunate situation for both humans and animals.

A pet is a lifelong responsibility and pets require considerable care, love and understanding as well as money. Assuming that you have all it takes to be a pet owner, what about your child? Is your child ready to accept certain responsibilities? Does he/she know about pet care? Do you have time to teach your child what it takes to be a pet owner? If all answers are a wholehearted “Yes” then you deserve to be congratulated. But, the next question, regarding “Pets as Gifts” goes to the heart of the matter. Would you present a new baby in your family as a graduating/Christmas gift to your children? The fact that one is an animal and the other one a human does not make any difference for they are both sentient beings. Animal babies grow much faster. Their emotional life develops within few months after birth. Hence, they must be treated with appropriate sensitivity from the first day they enter your lives. Would a toy warrant such consideration? A pet, normally a dog or a cat, that is not properly cared for becomes a problem child. Usually abandonment, which invariably means the

Wheelchair Tennis Players Need Our Support! During the past 3 years the two players on the left and right in this picture, Ebru and Jülide, have been training at Beykoz Tennis Courts as athletes of the Spinal Cord Paralytics Society. With your combined donations and moral support they can continue in their success. throughout the years but we continue to need support in many areas. We always need volunteer coaches who can play with them and teach them tennis and some IWI members have already have helped with this issue, namely Lesley Tahtakılıç and Mine Baltutan - thank you for your support. uring the past 3 years the two players on the left and right in this picture, Ebru and Jülide, have been training at Beykoz Tennis Courts as athletes of the Spinal Cord Paralytics Society.

It is almost hard to believe that these two women, despite all of the difficulties in finding indoor tennis courts and/or coaches in Turkey, have reached international ranking in the singles category as 50th in the world and in the doubles category as 70th. They were actually heading for the Para Olympics this year, taking place in London, but for this event there are only 32 athletes who will be admitted. In order to qualify our team needs to play in more tournaments before the end of May and we are confident that they can reach this goal. Unfortunately there are no more funds left to send these young people to any more international tournaments and we are appealing to all IWI members to help support our efforts to witness Turkey send its first team to the Para Olympics in London. Our athletes were ranked 3rd at the World Team Cup qualification matches for Europe (13 participating countries) with our team beating Ukraine and Israel! This happened just 5 weeks ago and the International Tennis Federation has awarded our players a silver plate for their efforts. From the very beginning, approximately nine years ago, the IWI has always supported wheelchair tennis for the disabled in many different ways and currently there are a number of 10-12 year old junior players to be trained who are paraplegic and will be in a chair for the rest of their lives. We have made many advances

IPWIN International Professional Women of Istanbul Network Ready… We continued our IPWIN events with topics that focused around entrepreneurship and self-owned businesses. Although not all of our members are actually running their own business or plan to do so, these topics attracted many participants with different backgrounds making our discussions very interesting and lively. We had an excellent kick-off in February: Our IPWIN member and consultant Semiha Ünal, S4U/Solutions For You, an expert in establishing businesses in Turkey talked about the requirements of starting your own business and the necessary elements of doing your own business in a Turkish business environment. With her excellent presentation she covered all the relevant aspects and gave valuable advice how to succeed and keep it going in this critical phase! …Set… Our March First Tuesday focused on an important, but sometimes neglected aspect of one’s business: the artful way of designing your logo and your webpage. Our IPWIN member and trained web designer Ella Onuk, www.hayal-ist.com, prepared an informative,

itself to understanding the drivers of desires of our target group, the importance to work on a “brand manifesto” and a comprehensive marketing mix and price setting. And, this process turned out to be equally valuable for a product and a service based business (for example consultants, trainers, coaches and language teachers). We would like to thank our guest speakers for their valuable contributions to our network and we are looking forward to continue with interesting discussions at our next IPWIN events. If you want to join our IPWIN group, as a member guest, guest-speaker or IPWIN coordinator, please remember: you don’t have to be working to do so! IPWIN is open to everyone. You may have small children or cannot work in Turkey for other/legal reasons. What unites us all is our interest in job-related topics and the wish to network with other women with similar interests. So we invite all non-working, working women and we are also open to guests and non-IWI-members – as our main aim is to enable networking. All the best & kolay gelsin! thoughtful and of course beautifully crafted presentation and gave insights on what to consider when you design your logo and/or web appearance (like colour, font, layout of your homepage, structure), how to find out what design fits you and your business and finally, what to take care of when you discuss with the “guy” who will program and administer your webpage. Visit her homepage for some inspiration! …Go! With all that inspiration we got from Semiha’s and Ella’s input we discussed another important issue in March: How to build your brand? Another IPWIN member, Barbara Balletta, marketing expert with international experience (15 years with UNILEVER), challenged us with her professional approach to marketing and brand building. Her conclusions: a successful brand understands the relevant needs/desires of its customers and satisfies these needs and desires with a consistent marketing mix in an evolutionary and dynamic way. We learnt to shift our focus from the product/service

MY EXPERIENCE WITH IPWIN I met many people in similar situations and we could share and reflect on challenging professional issues.

Dear friends, I would like to share with you my experience with the International Professional Women of Istanbul Network because I hope it can help you. The benefits I have received are mainly the support to clarify my professional development living in a new city, the opportunity to share ideas with people with similar interests and also to get support from business experts. I am Barbara Balletta and I arrived in Istanbul almost 3 years ago with the intention of returning to work (I was responsible for marketing in a multinational FMCG company and had taken two years off after the birth of my second child). After the first months I was pretty discouraged at the idea of returning to full speed in a corporate company and being faced with impossible daily distances, constant trips to neighboring countries requiring the need to be away from home for several nights a week combined wıth very long working days. Perhaps all things that were “normal” until a few years earlier suddenly became inappropriate in the new context of my life. It was at that moment that I approached IPWIN, which was just beginning to form as an organization. I met many people in similar situations and we could share and reflect on challenging professional issues. I particularly loved the workshop “Transition” which made me realize that my uncertainties were part of a “normal path of adaptation and evolution” and gave me the tools to understand and face the subsequent steps I needed to take.

MAY 2012

After that I started to explore many projects, testing and setting aside the least potential and becoming an assiduous frequenter of IPWIN Tuesday meetings and events, especially those related to the internet (potential of the new media and digital marketing tools). Through specific seminars and discussions with experts (in human resources, coaching, marketing, web design, business plan, social media, Turkish legislation) I could focus on my ideas and begin to implement my “small-big” project www.boutiquehotelitaly.com. This is a web portal with my collection of hand-picked boutique hotels and B&B’s in Italy “where you can feel at home.” I have had the opportunity to develop and combine my passion for travelling, my love for Italy (my home country) and the desire to make it better known, in addition to being able to flexibly manage my family life and gain job satisfaction. I am just at the beginning. The journey continues and it’s nice to be able to rely on my IPWIN friends and experts! I hope to see you at the next IPWIN meeting! All my best, Barbara

The beautiful historical cities? The breathtaking views? The beautiful countryside? Are you ready to leave and discover Italy with a journey from to Venice ? lies in a bay in the shadow of the sleepy Vesuvius by the beautiful islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida! It's a land of ancient traditions, archaeological treasures, breathtaking views. An area rich in history, churches and monuments that UNESCO has declared Historical World Heritage. There are many places to see. Above all, the picturesque Spaccanapoli with its craftsmen streets, where you can buy the shepherds of the Christmas Cribi. Right in the heart of this district there are two beautiful hotels, Palazzo Decumani and Decumani Hotel de Charme that are pleasant to spend a few nights. Near there are fascinating places such as the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, small villages perched on the sea, spreading from the citrus groves of Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast, stopping at Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. You can spend a few days around here sleeping in Ravello in a former monastery (Parsifal), or a noble villa (Villa Maria) and in Sorrento in a lovely B&B (Il Roseto) or in a villa surrounded by a garden of lemon trees (Villa Oriana ).

For those of you who want sea and islands, in an hour by ferry you arrive in Capri, fashionable, famous for the Faraglioni cliffs (where the depth of the sea reaches 3500 meters) and the Blue Cave. Among the hotels, Canasta is a charming, central, bright nest; Punta Tragara is luxurious with stunning views; B&B dell’Arte is in Anacapri, for those who want to discover the more authentic side of the island. Food in is fantastic and you should absolutely taste the real pizza Margherita (the one with “high dough”), buffalo mozzarella, sfogliatelle, Baba cake and the Limoncello liqueur. From , after only an hour by train, you arrive in Rome. This city has immense charm, is rich of a history that blends ancient artistic styles, Baroque, Renaissance, Romanesque, modern, popular and bourgeois. In Rome, you breathe history at every corner and you feel like a part of it! You will walk inside the Old Roman Forum and the Colosseum and imagine what happened thousands of years ago. You will meet people of all nationalities in St Peter's Square! You will admire the “Giudizio Universale” by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel! You will go shopping in the streets around the Spanish’s Steps where all the

best italian and international brands have their shops! You will enjoy an aperitif in the crowded Campo dei Fiori square, together with the local youth at sunset, before entering one of the cozy pizzeria nearby! You will walk through the old popular village of Trastevere and taste the best “bucatini all'amatriciana”, pasta like you've never had it before! If you are looking for a cozy place to stay, I suggest heading downtown to a small and charmful B&B, that are now so fashionable (Crossing Condotti, Locanda del Sole, RelaisTeatro Argentina, Arco de Tolomei, Spagna Royal Suites). From Rome, in an hour's drive, you can reach the Umbria region and visit many picturesque villages (Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto, Assisi…). Let's stop and sleep in a historic residence in Orvieto (Locanda Palazzone) or in a castle near Todi (Montignano) or in an old hermit house that hosted even the popes, in Spoleto (Eremo delle Grazie). Then you can go to Tuscany and you will soon feel like you are in a typical Italian movie, driving among the rolling hills and green valleys, enjoying endless vineyards: 500 square kilometers of land where Brunello, the Rosso di Montalcino and Chianti wines are produced. You find

yourself visiting a constellation of ancient villages, fascinating for their maze of tight streets, and where the tradition of the past are still alive. Places where the original medieval atmosphere is still untouched (Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza, Bagno Vignoni, Siena, San Gimignano…). There are many charming places to stay in: Corte dei Papi or Villa Piazzano, near Cortona; Villa Poggiano, Relais San Bruno or Sanguineto near Montepulciano; Il Giardino Segreto or La Bandita near Pienza; Campo Regio Relais in Siena; Antico Pozzo in San Gimignano. Once in Florence, one of the most famous cities for its artistic and cultural value and also the capital of Italy before the full reunification, you will visit beautiful monuments (the Cathedral, Giotto's Bell Tower, the Baptistry Uffizi Gallery). You will take a romantic walk on Ponte Vecchio and stop at the jewelry, handbags and leather shoes shops. If you love outlets, you will go to those of Prada, Gucci and The Mall (multibrands), less than an hour drive away. In Florence there are very nice hotels downtown (Residence Hilda, Hotel degli Orafi, Palazzo Gamba). From Tuscany, move to the Ligurian coast, the narrow strip of land in the North West

LALE Features From Liguria, make a stop in Piedmont, in the Langhe hills, a land of castles, medieval villages and Barolo and Barbaresco red wines. Rest a few days in a typical farmhouse surrounded by vineyards (Cascina Sant'Eufemia in Sinio or Cascina Barac in Alba) and savor the rhythm of the agricultural life, helping during the harvest of grapes or nuts (we are in the homeland of Nutella). In autumn, everything turns red and yellow with exceptional landscapes. In Alba there is the truffle festival and it's definitely an experience tasting the truffle menu of the local restaurants. Then, you can visit Turin, that retains much of its aristocratic appearance in the buildings, the atmosphere and the 18 km of monumental porches. This is the city with the highest number of historic cafes in Italy, those with gilded mirrors, antique furniture and frescoed walls!

of Italy, between the sea and the mountains. You will visit the Cinque Terre National Park (UNESCO World Heritage), full of small peninsulas, bays and trails connecting the villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Walk along the old paths for 12 kilometers, half way between the countryside and the sea, you will find hills, cliffs, olive groves, vineyards, creeks, and villages with spectacular views. Struck by the sunset, the Way of Love (Rio Maggiore-Manarola), excavated in the rock in the twenties, seems suspended along the

clifftop overlooking the sea and has been called the most beautiful walk in the world! To get there, you need to take the train. Excellent starting points and beautiful villages where to stay are Levanto (Park Hotel Argento or Hotel Carla), the charming Sestri Levante (Villa Agnese Hotel) and Santa Margherita (Villa Anita hotel), only few kilometers from Portofino, one of the most exclusive tourist destinations with its famous Piazzetta, the Ligurian multicolored houses that are reflected in the blue waters of the bay and the marina, with luxurious yachts.

Your journey continues towards Milan, the business, design and fashion capital. In the center, not far from the Castle and the Cathedral, there's the famous "fashion triangle" between Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga and Via Sant'Andrea, that hosts all the major names of fashion and designs worth browsing for shopping. Milan also hosts an important exhibition center and the city life revolves around the many events that happen like “Salone internazionale del mobile” (furniture), “Settimana della moda” (fashion), “BIT” (tourism), “Macef” (everything for the house), only to name a few! Less than an hour from Milan, it is possible to reach Como Lake, a charming destination with an unending chain of medieval villages perched along the lakesides, beautiful aristocratic old villas with luxurious parks and snowy mountains in the background! In Milan, I suggest you stay downtown (Hotel Milano Scala and The Yard) and while in Como, you can choose to stay in the Center (Borgovico Hotel) or in the countryside (Corte Santa Libera). Now move towards Venice, making a stop in Verona, the typical Italian town with its cobblestone main square, full of tables with cafes and restaurants, crowded with people reading the newspaper, taking a coffee, eating ice cream and teenagers arriving on their scooters, exchanging glances and meeting at "the usual place". At certain times, everyone seems to flow back into the street and it is like a silent appointment! Here, you will visit Juliet's balcony, where Romeo and Juliet fell in love in Shakespeare's tragedy and where the famous movie "Letters to Juliet" was shot. This has become one of the most romantic place and the lovers from around the world

During the summer, it is a must to attend a concert in the Arena, which has amazing acoustics (stay at Escalus Luxury Suite, just a few steps away from the Arena). Finally, you arrive in Venice, and that is always awesome! Here the life takes place entirely on the water and there is huge traffic of boats (boats for everything: firemen, police, ambulance). On the ferry to Piazza San Marco, every minute you hear chorus of sighs of surprise and excitement, as you pass through the various districts of Venice (sestiere) and admire monuments and historic buildings of many colors! Pass under the Rialto Bridge, the symbol of Venice; meet typical gondoliers in their traditional costumes, slipping into tiny streets of water, passing under bridges narrow and low that you can touch; reach Piazza San Marco, the "living room of Venice", one of the most beautiful squares in the world, teeming with people, live colors, sparkling, surrounded by a maze of streets and bridges, with lots of small craft shops of Carnival masks, blown glass, paper work and nice restaurants.
You will be fascinated by the majesty of the Basilica and you will understand the greatness of Venice reflected in the richness of its churches, embellished over the centuries with precious objects of art brought from the most remote places. In Venice there are excellent hotels downtown, like Liassidi Palace, Bloom Settimo Cielo and La Villeggiatura B&B. Our virtual journey is now over, if you are excited about a real journey to my beautiful country, I would like to invite you to visit my new website www.boutiquehotelitaly.com. It is a collection of small, boutique, luxury hotels and B&B in Italy, where you can feel at home. I evaluated over 700 hotels, visited almost 100 and selected 60, generally cozy nests with 10 rooms on average, directly managed by the owner. Some have been chosen for their remarkable location or as a historical building, some for their exceptional garden or food… what I never compromise on are hospitality and cleaning, they are a must! Carlo Bernardini

Who is Carlo Bernardini? This year the IWI Spring Ball “ La Dolce Vita” will be an Italian themed Gala Dinner catered by Chef Carlo Bernardini at the historical home of H.E. the Italian Ambassador, at the Palazzo Venezia, in Beyoğlu. Enter behind the scenes with this introduction to Carlo Bernardini and the delicious menu he is preparing for us.

C

arlo was born in Venice, Italy and raised at his family’s hotel-restaurant where he grew up to the rhythm of the Venetian seasons with the wonderous products from local waters and fields and, of course, his grandmother’s inspirational home cooking. After graduating from the Culinary School in Venice and from the Hotel Management Institute in Switzerland, Carlo set out to conquer the kitchens of Italy and Europe under the command of renowned chefs like Pierre Gilgen, Anton Mossiman, Pierre Gaignare. He also acquired cooking experience in places such as The Dorchester in London, The Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, Cipriani Hotel in Venice, Villa San Michele in Florence and in St. Etienne. After many years spent in the finest kitchens and establishments throughout Europe, Carlo made his way to the United States, from Aqua in San Francisco to Le Cirque in New York. This eventually led him to join the Four Seasons Hotels Group as Executive Chef in the Far East (Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok), where his cooking style radically shifted to incorporate an exotic Eastern flair into his native Italian cuisine. Following this experience, Carlo next moved to Turkey to open the new Four Seasons Hotel in Sultanahmet in 1996, where he remained for three years. He then transferred to Cairo for the opening of the Four Seasons Hotel in Cairo, and then on to Canary Wharf, London and finally to Lisbon.

28

In 2002, Carlo decided to embark on a new and and independent venture with his Culinary Life Style, establishing his own consultancy company involving several projects for new restaurants in Paris, Milan and Prague. At the same time, he took measure of the great opportunity for catering and events in Istanbul and decided accordingly to establish his new firm as Carlo Bernardini Fine Catering & Events in 2004, focusing on premier catering services, both in Turkey and abroad. Since then, Carlo has been involved in a wide variety of events and prestigious occasions which all eventually led him to be selected as the official caterer for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her official visit to Turkey, as well for the former US President Bill Clinton during his state visit, to name a few. Throughout this time, Carlo, as a truly modern chef, has continuously emphasized the traditional Italian cooking from his early years because he finds using seasonal fresh ingredients, herbs and olive oil to be the very unique and quintessential Italian way of cooking. One of the reasons for his success in the catering business is because he never compromises on product quality and always includes the finest ingredients available in his Italian cooking. Buon Appetito, Carlo www.carlobernardini.com

he ladies of Zekeriyaköy were given a wonderful talk by Fazıl Özen from Harmony Gems who came to give us a presentation on Coloured Gemstones. Fazıl Bey is the Ambassador to Turkey for the I. C. A (International Coloured Gemstone Association). It is the biggest and most respected gemstone association in the world. There are members from over 50 different countries and membership is only accepted by recommendation. We were introduced to Fazıl Bey by Sirkka, a jeweller based in Zekeriyaköy, who is her supplier. Fazıl Bey has been running courses on diamonds and coloured gemstones for more than 6 years in over 60 different cities and regions with the collaboration of the associated Chambers of Commerce and Jewellery Chambers. Almost 3,000

34

people have graduated from his courses. We were extremely lucky to have such an Ambassador talking to us about Gemstones; his talk was hugely informative and honest. Fazıl Bey travels extensively to over 60 different countries to source the right stones directly from the mines. He brought along a wide range of stones and explained the differences in them. He showed us how similar the colours of some stones can be but how different in value they can be. He further showed us the huge range of colours within in each group and how to recognise the valuable from the nonvaluable ones. He also gave information about prices for these stones. In a short time we gleaned an awful lot of knowledge. He has kindly offered to run a day course

for the ladies of the IWI on the properties of diamonds. He will teach us how to grade diamonds according to international standards. He would give us tips on how to buy a diamond, what are the risks and how to spot them. He has also offered to run a course on coloured gemstone where he would teach the same basic knowledge about all coloured gemstones. He will also give approximate market price information which is very important for buyers. We recommend that you look out for the courses that Fazıl Bey from Harmony Stones is going to run - you will undoubtedly learn a lot from him.

Italians Do it Better Talya Arditi

We don’t know what it is but new Italian restaurants keep opening up around Istanbul. We decided not to ask why (seriously, we’re not going to complain about more pizza and pasta options in Istanbul) but to go ahead and try them all. Here is what we found out on our Italian trek in Istanbul.

The New Italians in Town Emporio Armani Ristorante What used to be Armani Café in İstinyePark shopping mall turned into Emporio Armani Ristorante last month. aravansarai is an independent art production space, artist residency, and art collective in Karaköy founded and run by Julie Upmeyer and Anne Weshinskey.

We are two Americans who met in Istanbul amidst a group of local and international creative people. Julie was looking for a space where she could work on her art works, installations and events in an energetic environment. Anne was looking for somewhere with ceilings high enough for circus skills and a community of people who were eager to work hard and create circus performances. Together we thought we just might be able to pull this together within Istanbul’s growing art scene. Our building is in Perşembe Pazarı in which we initiate the kind of activities and events we like: Collaborative efforts, workshops, performances, dinner parties, creative projects, and circus classes. Located in this small, 6-story building are also artist studios, two residency bedrooms, a kitchen, office/library, and a terrace with a view of Eminönü over the Haliç. In the space, Julie produces art work in her personal studio and Anne puts together circus shows and trains people in trapeze and other circus skills, including tightwire, hand balancing and foot juggling for both adults and children.

The Best Self Healing And Anti Aging Tool

Meditation What is meditation?

M

editation is simply to turn within and experience the absolute silence within oneself regularly. During meditation people try to by-pass daily mundane thoughts and let go of any emotions by totally surrendering to the totality of the infinite intelligence of the universe. What are the benefits of meditation? Up until some years ago meditation was considered, in the West, to be purely an ancient far-eastern spiritual practice. But in the last 15 years with the publication of the results of many reliable scientific studies it has been proven that meditation is a very strong self-healing, internal energy regulator and consequently a very strong anti-aging tool. Modern science has proven the benefits of meditation… The Benson Henry Institute of Harvard Medical School has been conducting several scientific studies for more than 25 years already and the publication of the results of these many years long studies have clearly shown that meditation is probably the strongest anti-aging tool and it has many clear benefits in curing various medical

MAY 2012

conditions from depression to hot-flushes in menopause. The results of these studies show that meditation not only cures many medical conditions but also helps to increase the quality of sleep dramatically while improving memory performance and concentration. Currently some private schools in the USA such as Montessori have started to include meditation in their daily practice for children as they have discovered a more than 60% improvement in their math performance without the need for any extra homework. It has also been proven that migraine headaches are another medical condition which meditation helps to great extent in many patients. The scientific studies at the MIT show that the neuro-plasticity change in the human brain occurs after approximately 30 to 40 days in a permament way following daily meditation. The meaning of this is that every meditation helps you evolve at many levels and unlike doing sports, in which you go back to your original condition if you don’t continue, every meditation one does keeps its benefit permanently. This is probably the biggest benefit of meditation that surprised many neuroscience researchers at the MIT. Meditation also helps to increase peace in and around your community. There have

been many studies conducted by leading institutions, especially in the USA, clearly proving that the greater the number of meditating people the less violence and criminality occuring in the areas of meditation. There are different studies that have been conducted in collaboration with the FBI which show a clear reduction in criminality linked to regular meditation made by a pre-determined minimum number of meditators in ratio to the living inhabitants. In one of these studies a 25% reduction in criminal activity was recorded in Washington, DC during a three month summer period in comparison to the previous summer. There are different methods of meditation but especially the “primordial sound” type of meditation is one of the easiest to learn yet also one of the most effective ones. It is one of the two most researched medition methods with proven positive physical and mental health benefits. If you are in Turkey for some or part of the summer, Camp Wolftrack offers an escape from the city into the serene surroundings of Bolu. This area is the perfect place for getting in touch with nature.

A

s a kid, I always wanted to go away to camp. It seemed like the ultimate cool thing to do, unfortunately my parents were not keen on the idea, so I spent my summers, hanging out at my cousin’s house or with friends, going to a summer school class, or working at the mall. Remember that old saying, ‘idle hands are the tool of the devil’, well, now that I have two little ones of my own, I can see the truth in that statement. I am a big believer in keeping kids busy during the summer vacation. For this reason, I compiled a list of some of the summer opportunities available for our kids. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across Camp Wolftrack. The English name sparked my interest and I decided to investigate. I spoke to Erdem, a counsellor at Camp Wolftrack, to find out more: What is the purpose and/or mission of Camp Wolftrack? We symbolize a lifestyle as Camp Wolftrack. We offer nature and adventure youth camps. We address values such as empathy, self-confidence, success, leadership, team-spirit, respect towards nature and respect for individuals in every activity we do. What do kids learn from being at this Camp? Children not only learn to share, but also learn to live in harmony with nature and experience the power of team spirit. We have handicraft workshops, we teach them how to survive in the wilderness, Kids learn how to take care of themselves and be

responsible. They also have the opportunity to make good friends. How is Camp Wolftrack different from other camps? We have been in existence for 12 years. We are different because we stress personal improvement, self-confidence, and creativity in our campers. Our philosophy is “Nature is the best teacher”. Our mission is to let our campers be part of the nature. Children are our most important assets. At CW we teach children that the time spent at camp is not free time, we keep our camp structured because children need this to thrive. We also offer team-building, camps for companies and groups. Who are the counsellors, what experience and/or educational background do they have. All our team members are responsible, honest, intelligent people who are also experts in their fields. Before every camping season, they are trained by our founder Serdar Kiliç. You can see him on NTV on his programs, ‘Alone in Nature’ and ‘Nature with Children’. His training program is not only technical; it also covers the psychology of children. What is the ratio of boys to girls? It changes. Sometimes there are more boys; sometimes girls are higher in ratio. In order to give the best service, we only operate camp with a maximum of 30 campers in each one week camp period. What is the ratio of male and female counsellors? We have a total of 17 staff members, of these 11 of them are camp counsellors, (6 male and 5 female), most of them can speak English. What is the profile of a camper, what schools do they attend, are they mostly from Istanbul, etc? Our campers range from 8 to 16 years of age. During the camping season we divide them into groups of 8-12 years of age and 1216 years of age. Campers from all around Turkey join us, but the majority are from Istanbul and they know some English and other languages from school. If you are in Turkey for some or part of the summer, Camp Wolftrack offers an escape from the city into the serene surroundings of Bolu. This area is the perfect place for getting in touch with Nature. They offer a ‘traditional’ style camp, an environment where you can sit around a camp fire, sing songs, and roast marshmallows. I just registered both of my boys and I am anxiously looking forward to them having the camp experience I never had. Wish us luck! www.campwolftrack.com

Techniques Teach YourChild to

I was lucky that a family friend took an interest in me and taught me to swim when I was two years old. Here are some important tips to teach your child to start breathing underwater.

Breath control: How does one teach a child to hold his breath under water?

T

he first and the most important thing to learn in swimming is controlling your breath. Depending on the child’s age and past experience with water, learning to control his or her breath could be very easy or a slow and difficult process. However, once

42

mastered it becomes a life-long reflex. This very important technique of holding one’s breath under water and blowing bubbles has to be taught carefully because there is always the possibility of the child swallowing water. The exercises for teaching the child to hold his breath change with his age and help his vascular system to develop. I will focus on techniques for children two-years old and

above. Even if you don’t have a pool to work in, you can use your bath tub to get started. You will see that when you get to the pool your child will have already developed the basic skills and will learn much faster. Before you get started, pay attention to the following: 1. If you are working in the bath tub, be sure to stay away from the hot water faucet and take out the spray nozzle. It is easy for your

MAY 2012

mums ‘n kids child to pull it down over his head without anyone noticing. 2. Check the temperature of the water to minimize your child’s reaction to an extreme temperature 3. During these exercises, always make eye contact and be cheerful. Never leave your child alone, even with an older sibling. 4. Reward him if he is successful and encourage him if he is not. 5. Don’t try to proceed at your pace; proceed at your child’s pace. These are the items you will need before you get started 1. Large plastic cup 2. If you don’t have a tub or don’t want to fill up your tub, a large pail 3. Toys that sink or change 4. Warm towel to wrap him up in after the session and a reward such as his favorite chocolate.

forehead. This is the most important part of the exercise so don’t skip any of the steps. 3. Ask your child to do the same thing for himself. If he doesn’t want to do it right away, allow him to pour water down your forehead then try again. 3. If he has come this far successfully, it is time for you to pour the water down his forehead. Count to three, make sure he takes a breath and closes his mouth, and pour the water down gently. Tell him what a good job he has done. Gradually, increase the amount of water that you pour. 4. If your child has gotten used to this exercise, repeat the same steps in the tub or by the pool. When you give the command, have your child put his face in the water and blow bubbles. It is possible to have some setbacks at this point but don’t get discouraged and stay positive. 5. If you are now practicing in the pool,

mouth, don’t worry, he can still manage to hold his breath using a blocking reflex. 8. Another excellent technique is to leave the control up to your child. This is important to help him gain his self-confidence. Leave loose coins or toys under water for him to recover. A four-year old child can easily dive down 1.5 meters. There are many other exercises your child can do along with breath control. I hope to cover those next time. Have fun teaching!

To teach your child how to hold his breath you have to be the model first…to gain his confidence and assure him that all will be well. To accomplish this here is the plan: 1. Sit down facing him or her and establish eye contact. Make sure he is paying attention. Fill the cup with water and count to three looking at your child. Show him that you are taking a big breath, close your mouth, and pour the water down your

continue to use the plastic cup method now and then. 6. Have your child hold the side of the pool and ask him to put submerge his head in the water but be sure to show him how to do it yourself first. 7. If you have come this far, you can now hold your child under his arms, establish eye contact, count to three, have him take a big breath and close his mouth and dive under the water together. If he is not closing his

Summer Vacation is just around the corner, what do you have planned? Summer Schools in Istanbul Preparing for the summer means have a plan for when they kids are out of school, or something new and different for you and your little one. If you are staying in Istanbul, your child’s school or kindergarden might be offering a summer program. If not, feel free to check with other area schools to see if they have courses set up for the summer. There is a wide variety of different things for your child to try right here in Istanbul. I have complied a list of some of the places that have summer programs that are appropr ate for foreign or bilingual students. Even if

your child doesn’t speak Turkish, I urge you not to be afraid to put him or her in classes where the primary language is Turkish, because more than likely there are instructors and teachers that speak English and would be more than happy to asist you and your child. Also, putting your child into a Turkish leanrning environment can be a very educational and culturally enriching experience for ex-pat children. I compiled the below list from an extensive Turkish internet site www.cocukvizyon.com. The site has many more places to choose from, but I went through and selected the ones that look as if they would be the most hospitable to IWI

Russell Gunnell

ESL: KNOCKING DOWN BARRIERS FOR A POSITIVE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, STRONGER LEARNING OUTCOMES AND IMPROVED LANGUAGE ACQUISITION Russell Gunnell, AST Literacy Coordinator, Head of Secondary English and English as a Second Language at the British International School Istanbul, provides a brief summary of what ESL students can expect within the English and ESL classroom.

‘Learning is a challenge; it is meant to be tough.’ I can still hear my dad saying this to me, probably because he had good cause to repeat it several times throughout my learning career. It was, more often than not, the precursor to, ‘especially if it is worth learning and learning well.’ Much younger I would nod at such stern correctness and dare question only inwardly. Older now though, and distanced by two thousand miles plus, I respectfully disagree and would argue that it needn’t be ‘tough’. That learning is all fun without hard work though is a myth however and we should all try to remember that being a student and a young learner is not an easy accomplishment. It can at times be difficult. For an international student, some of whom are third culture children, learning is riddled with extra challenges that frequent transitions assuredly bring. Our students must repeatedly cope with new cultures, new peers, teachers, teacher expectations, school structures and organisation as well as catching up missed knowledge and work as they deal with the nature of a new curriculum and its relevance to them. That so many cope so admirably well with this change is testament to their strength of character, their perception of the importance of learning, and good supportive parenting. For the ESL student these same difficulties exist but alongside these is the daunting realisation that now, without any English in a school using English as the medium of instruction, they are also illiterate and in a world almost completely inaccessible to them. They are locked, albeit momentarily I would hope, within. This added dimension of difficulty and how exactly the ESL teacher attempts to cushion and turn this potentially detrimental school experience positive is the focus of this article. Students of most international schools located in major cities are by their

48

acceptance international and varied. The actual number of native speaking English students is often very small indeed. Here, the British International School is no different. We too have a myriad number of international students that represent so many countries and contribute to such an enriched global outlook. My point? Well, although the Secondary English department has identified and targeted 30 or so students this year who have benefited from ESL support, we must not forget that the majority of the remaining students are still not native speakers themselves. In a language not their first, and for some not even their second, they will explore and communicate daily their understanding of concepts taught.1 They will even, on occasion, complete and turn in their written assignments on time… but always they will battle through their learning in a medium not their own. For the classroom teacher, the key here is patience, differentiation and frequent time out from central learning objectives to check understanding, attachment to experience, fluency and literacy. When this is embedded into teaching practice these learners can move forward quickly, and later, one only hopes, independently. As impressive as these students are though, they are not the focus here. Instead it is the student who enters BISI with very little or no English at all. From here on, it is these learners that I refer to when I use the term ESL student. So, what is it we do for them? First and foremost, we need to identify the strengths and areas that need developing and begin to address this via traditional placement testing and oral communication… lots of communication. No matter how little English is present there must be a connection made; a mutual recognition and understanding that despite there not being, as yet a common language, there are two cultures ready to share. Initially it is the ESL teacher who attempts to provide a sense of our school identity,

values and community within a secure, small classed, error-friendly environment. It is the ESL teacher who is most likely the first to get a real sense of who this student is, where they come from (I do not mean geographically) and what their unique individual needs are. After all, how else could they hope to move their student forward without such knowledge? If language equates culture, then for any sharing and language acquisition to take place a respect for both languages and culture must first be shown. And here’s the rub: without a shared language how can this be achieved? Well, unlike the busy form tutor of 15 students for 10 minutes a day, or the science teacher swimming against the tide to complete the syllabus, the ESL teacher shapes a unique programme of language study that is centred on developing only a deeper understanding of the ESL student. This is delivered within a small class without the distraction and limitations of having to comply with less effective syllabi and time restrictions. Simply2, the better this understanding is; the more effective communication must surely have become. This effective communication, both oral and written, is the result of language acquisition - the very thing that is strived for in the ESL classroom. To paint a more accurate picture of what really goes on within the ESL classroom I must elaborate, as clearly language acquisition at Secondary level is not just the result of lots of talking and ‘real’ listening. Depending on a student’s capability and understanding of English to access the mainstream curriculum will depend on how much support is offered.

1

This may not be wholly evident at home where teenage tiredness and angst often turns communication with parents into a series of monosyllabic grunts no matter what the language.

2

In fact, overly so.

Presently at BISI we offer three avenues: English Intervention where students are withdrawn from English Literature classes to experience more language support – this is for the ESL student who has made the transition to mainstream English but still finds the normal depth and pace of coverage still a challenge. Partial Withdrawal where students opt for extra English lessons rather than another foreign language acquisition class such as French, Spanish, Turkish or German which can impede the acquisition of English quickly needed to gain full access to the curriculum. Lastly, Total Withdrawal where students with very limited English experience a programme of study which is designed to completely immerse them in English. This is broken only by the inclusion of Art, Physical Education and, if accessible, some classes of Science and Math. Where this is not possible the ESL teacher attempts to include within this immersive environment relevant core subject topics when appropriate. Obviously the purpose of all ESL intervention is to support English acquisition, raise confidence and enable students to access

MAY 2012

the curriculum BISI provides. To facilitate this ESL teachers adopt a number of pedagogic approaches for maximum effect. Again depending on the needs and type of learners these students are will depend what they encounter. But for sure they will come across approaches and strategies such as cognitive and constructivist knowledge based learning, collaborative scaffolding, articulated and associative reasoning (also an accelerated learning technique), topic and problem based activities – all of which fit under the umbrella of a communicative approach. Additionally, they will have frequent exposure to different voices as students do not have just one ESL teacher. It is quite common place that students will experience several teachers for varying skills required. During this exchange they will be exposed to yet more focusing language acquisition strategies. Even the ESL classroom, suggestopaedia in practice, follows a humanist approach to learning where comfort, relaxing soft

music and other sensual stimuli is used to promote positive language acquisition. Within this environment students learn quickly because it is relevant, accessible and fun to do so. Students are encouraged always to communicate freely without the anxiety of making mistakes as fluency is more important than accuracy. Errors can be, and are, dealt with later when students are confident enough to speak and motivated enough to do it correctly. We give the ESL student as many opportunities as possible to get involved, have a go, and role play. Games are seen as learning tools as explanation of play is oral instruction. Of vital importance too, is reading. This is done daily from the very first week of study as it models structure and provides vocabulary. Texts become more advanced as the ability to decode language develops. In short, the ESL classroom is a busy place of learning. Embedded within its inimitable teaching practice and delivery of content is

49

mums ‘n kids all of what teaching and learning should be when outstanding. Here the learning is not tough. Here challenges are faced squarely with smiles that beam a growing confidence and, more importantly, English acquisition is strong and fast. Have we got it right? It seems to work: the support, the learning and the intent to get these students into the mainstream curriculum as effectively as possible. As reflective practitioners all educators look to improve their role in the process of teaching and learning, and we are no different. There is much we do well; there is much we can develop. Next year, improvement will come in the form of a newly designed programme of study, an alternative timetable and the facility to withdraw ESL students should they need more class support. Additionally, we look forward to the arrival of another experienced ESL teacher who can help develop what we have already started. There are many examples of student success that could be shared here but sadly there is simply not the space. One though is a must.

Last April, with just one term to complete the academic year, two Korean boys were admitted to BISI with next to no English. An added challenge was that they were placed in year 9, meaning that in just one term and the magic of a summer holiday they were to be ready to engage in their IGCSE studies at the beginning of September last. They received, of course, total withdrawal until the summer and when this year began, partial withdrawal. On their first day at BISI however they were mistakenly and momentarily placed within a year 9 class. They sat. They stared. After perhaps ten minutes they attempted to explain that they should go for lunch. So difficult was the language barrier and the ability to communicate their need, they were both mistakenly allowed to go instead to the toilet. These same boys visit me every fortnight. In our last session we spoke naturally and fluently about the conventions of science fiction in literature and how such conventions are represented in film. We even found time to discuss the three laws of robotics. I have never since our first

meeting mistakenly sent them to the toilet instead of lunch. Last week, whilst recording several IGCSE ESL oral examinations, I was pleased to be reminded that I had entered these two students for the exam. One spoke about globalisation. The other spoke about the disadvantages of international tourism. They both did well. They both passed. Finally then, my dad had it half right: learning can sometimes be challenging, but a good teacher for an improved student must attempt to remove as many barriers and obstacles to learning as possible. Learning should not become overly arduous, a painfully difficult chore. It should be made within reach, made memorable and build upon experience and knowledge already gained. It should be enjoyed and so whenever possible made enjoyable. Its curriculum should be accessible and all inclusive. Yes, yes, all this may sound like an education idyll, but it is what every classroom aspires to be. Biased perhaps, but none do it better and more frequently than the English and ESL classrooms of the British International School Istanbul.
