Letter from the Editor

T

o patent food seems like an outrageous idea. You can argue that food is food and has been consumed for millions of years. Why would anyone take ownership of a certain dish or name of a dish, and make you pay royalties before you may enjoy it? The idea is not so far-fetched though. In South Africa, the names, Rooibos (tea) and Karoo Lamb are private property. You are only allowed to use it on your product if you meet certain

criteria. The French also decided that no one is allowed to use the word, champagne, for the delicious, bubbly alcoholic beverage which originated in the Champagne region of France. It is also possible to patent recipes if they are novel and unique. Obviously recipes widely used will therefore be near impossible to patent. Coca-Cola is famous for not patenting their famous recipe, but they do patent sweeteners. Recipes are eligible for patent protection if they contain patentable subject matter. The question was recently aired whether Zambia had something in that category. Eugene Kabilika, Executive Director of the Roman Catholic aid organisation, Caritas Zambia, stated that Chikanda and Chibwantu are some of the products that should be patented. He said the royalties could help improve the lives of local people. The power of these products lies in their names and since tourists are willing to pay the price to enjoy local cuisine in restaurants, it will be easy to put a premium on it. You can apply the same principle to the retail sector. Farmers and the processors of traditional foods can claim premiums on the names of the food they produce. The definition of a dish and the technicalities around such a patent is difficult, though. It will be tough to negotiate this, but it is possible. Farmers are producers and manufacturers of food. They should always look out for opportunities and to add value to their products. They should always get their share of the pie. This month our magazine is filled cover to cover with articles on exciting products and services which are crucial for farmers who want to move forward. Enjoy! Farm smartly! Save energy and irrigate more profitably with AGRICO's GPS based Web Control A

GRICO recently introduced a new GPS controller with which pivots can be controlled on AGRICO's wellknown internet application. By controlling pumps according to the specific need of the pivots, heaps of energy are saved. Devices on the internet Advanced Rain Pivot Control and Pump Control connect irrigation devices to the Internet on AGRICO's Rain interface. The whole system is managed easily and accurately. New GPS module AGRICO's new GPS can be installed on any electrical pivot. The position of the last tower is determined accurately. The pressure can be monitored at the end of the pivot and with AGRICO Pump Control and a VFD (variable frequency drive) the pressure can be controlled automatically and accurately.

The following graph shows how the AGRICO system accurately controls the pressure according to the need of the pivot. The spray package requires a minimum pressure of 100 kPa at the end of the pivot for correct, uniform irrigation. Traditionally, the irrigation system is then designed with a constant inlet pressure to continuously meet the maximum pressure requirement (at the highest point); about 450 kPa in this case. However, the pressure at the centre can be varied between about 240 kPa and 450k kPa according to the topography to exactly meet the pressure requirements and thus save energy.

Shows the energy required with pressure control (in green) and the 28% energy saving (in red), compared to when no control would be applied.

The value of pressure control with AGRICO’s GPS module Here is a real example of a pivot with a large height difference between the highest and lowest points:

The graph shows how the AGRICO control system automatically responds by varying the inlet pressure at the centre (the solid red line) to continuously maintain the required pressure at the end of the machine (the blue dotted line). The actual end pressure is also indicated (solid blue line).

This is a Google image with 2 m contours. The graph shows the height profile on the circumference. The total height difference is 21 m, and the maximum height is 13 m higher than the average height. The white section on the graph represents potential energy savings that can be achieved with pressure control.

energy saving with AGRICO's GPS pressure control for this real case is more than 28%.

Since the pressure is controlled not to fall below the threshold values and the spray package is equipped with pressure regulators, the volume of water applied remains constant, despite the slope. Power (kW) is the product of pressure (kPa) and flow (ℓ/s). The power required for the pump(s) during irrigation is therefore directly proportional to the pressure applied. The total energy for one revolution of the pivot is equivalent to the area under the pressure curve. The following graph shows how much energy is required for one revolution with AGRICO's automatic pressure control, versus the energy that would be required if no control is applied. The

ecurity software is getting more advanced and user friendly by the day. It saves farmers many hours of needless worry. Ctrack, a software as a service (SaaS) solution offered by Inseego Group, is a global supplier of vehicle tracking, insurance telematics, and fleet management solutions. With operations spanning over 55 countries on six continents, with 500 employees, over one million Ctrack systems were sold to date. Their continued emphasis on researching and developing next-generation products ensures that they remain ahead of the market, meeting demands for value-added, flexible, feature-rich, and cost-effective technology that keeps everything ‌ Always Visible. With this goal in mind, Ctrack has developed and pioneered products that directly address the five key areas of fleet and asset management. Ctrack’s five key areas of fleet and asset management: Owning and operating vehicles efficiently in any business requires that the owner of the fleet must have as much information about their performance as possible. Furthermore, transport operators need to make sure that a holistic telematics solution is used to address the five key fleet management areas identified by Ctrack, namely: risks, cost control, fleet utilisation, operations control, and asset control.

Ctrack thinks of everything while they continuously upgrade their software.

Risks: Dangerous driving is a major threat to your business, as is unauthorised vehicle use. This element includes the safety, fatigue, and rest times of your drivers. It also includes general vehicle security, theft, hijackings, signal jamming, route adherence and area management. Cost control: Driver behaviour out on the road has a big impact on your bottom line. Cost control provides insights into speeding, accidents, harsh braking and cornering, excessive idling, tacho analysis and fuel monitoring, so you can keep a lid on these costs. The monitoring of driving patterns further helps reduce fuel consumption. Fleet utilisation: This reduces fuel and maintenance costs. Business owners need to know how their vehicles are being used, not just how they are being driven. Ctrack provides you with odometer readings, vehicle operating hours, turnaround You are covered and have access to your Ctrack softtimes, route adherware through any imaginable platform.

ence, auxiliary monitoring, and waypoints. Operations control: Real-time fleet management helps reduce fuel consumption. Keeping control of your vehicles becomes increasingly difficult as the fleet grows and your routes and schedules change. Ctrack tackles this complexity with productivity reports, route deviation details, time adherence insights and more. Asset control: As vehicles age, it becomes difficult to have a holistic view of their individual condition. With Ctrack it is possible to receive daily health checks and odometer/hour meter readings. From here it becomes much easier to schedule vehicle maintenance, keep up with vehicle license renewals, and perform accident analysis. A principal aim of Ctrack is, from the moment the ignition is turned on, to provide as much information as possible on all operational activities, with the aim of helping to improve efficiency and reduce fleet operational costs. Ctrack can even assist in reducing the overall size of the fleet. Ctrack, keeping your fleet ‌ Always Visible. Steer clear of security and maintenance surprises. Be smart with gut health: Part 2 by Given Hamanungu, Technical Advisor at Tiger Feeds

G

ut health relies on the maintenance of the delicate balance between the host, the intestinal microbiota, the intestinal environment and dietary compounds. This balance can be significantly affected by factors such as bird management, feed quality and the birds’ environment. When gut health is optimal, there is complete digestion of the feed and absorption of the nutrient components for good body development. If there is a disruption to the normal processes in the gut, incomplete digestion and absorption of nutrients can occur, leading to malabsorption and gut imbalance. If there is any imbalance in the gut environment, gut health is then at risk of being compromised, which can impact the health and performance of the birds. When digestion and absorption are not optimal, there is malabsorption of nutrients resulting in more nutrients being available to the small intestinal bacteria that can lead to an overgrowth of the bacterial population. A further consequence of malabsorption is the passing of proteins, sugars and fat into the ceca, causing an overgrowth in the microbial population and a shift away from the beneficial fermentative bacteria. The colour of the gut surface, tone of the gut wall and the consistency of the contents are basic indicators of ongoing gut health and can help with the identification of the cause of the issue.

Picture: Steve Buissinne, Pixabay.com

Healthy villi under a microscope. If the gut is properly developed and the immune system is not compromised, the result can be good bird growth and an excellent FCR (feed conversion ratio). After the birds hatch and get access to feed and water, the gut is triggered into its final stages of maturation. During the first week of life, the gut undergoes rapid maturation with rapid growth of the intestinal villi. After this growth phase the length of the villi is critical as it dictates the length of the villi in the adult bird. If villi growth is compromised during

The left image shows a healthy gut with the duodenum at the top, then the jejunum and then the ileum. The right image shows poor gut health. Here, the surface of the gut is seen to be inflamed, the gut tone is poor and the contents consist of mucus and excessive fluid. These are all indicators of poor gut health and impaired digestion. Biosecurity, shed hygiene and brooding management are all key for chick health and the establishment of a healthy gut. ProAgri Zambia 57

brooding, the result is shorter villi in the adult bird which will impact on performance. Optimal villi growth relies on correct brooding management along with good feed and water quality. In the field it has been observed that the chicks receiving good brooding, tend to develop a gut that performs well and has a greater capacity to cope with challenges in the chicken shed. Conclusion Maintaining the balance of good gut health is a key aspect of getting the best growth and FCR out of any foodproducing animal. It is important for the farmer to understand gut flora, gut function and gut immunity, and it remains a very complex area. Regional variations in poultry production, management styles, climate, disease and raw feed materials add further complexity to maintaining good gut health, but what is clear is that developing and maintaining gut health through good bird management practices is key to maintaining bird health, welfare and performance. A wise broiler farmer will: Observe, investigate, identify, act!

Fatten your beef cattle with Novatek Feedlot 85

T

he purpose of a cattle feedlot is to fatten cattle for slaughter, and the quicker and more economical the cattle are fattened, the more successful the feedlot. Cattle farmers have to feed a well-balanced diet to realise good profits. In practice, there are generally two feeding systems to choose from when a farmer is considering fattening cattle, and they are: Total mixed rations or the cafeteria system. Under total mixed rations, the roughage portion (mostly grass) is chopped into small pieces and mixed with a concentrated feed. This reduces sorting and selection of the feed by animals and will, in turn, help the animal to receive all the required nutrients in the right amounts. Because of this, animals who

are fed the total mixed rations grow better and will reach the desired market weight quicker. The grass used in total mixed rations should be chopped to a certain length. If the grass is chopped too fine, digestion becomes rapid, affecting rumination and therefore disturbing the rumen health of the animal. If grass particles are too large, the animals will be able to separate the concentrate feed from the grass, which will, in turn, affect performance. Under the cafeteria system, the grass is fed separately from the concentrated feed. Farmers practising the cafeteria system have an option of letting the animals graze or to cut the grass and provide it to the animals in a closed environment. Under the cafeteria system, the grass must be fed on a free-choice

ProAgri Zambia 57

basis (ad lib), and the concentrate feed needs to be introduced slowly to help prevent metabolic diseases. Animals will typically be kept in a feedlot for three months, depending on the initial body and target weight. If cattle are in poor initial body condition, it will take longer to achieve the target weight. To get the best results, a farmer will also have to consider the breed and the age of the animal. Fast-growing breeds will give you higher yields than slow-growing breeds. However, the younger animals, in general, provide better meat quality. To help farmers successfully fatten their cattle, Novatek produces the Novatek Feedlot 85 concentrate. Novatek Feedlot 85 is a high protein and low inclusion fattening concentrate that is formulated specifically for feedlot cattle. To make use of the concentrate, the farmer can mix the concentrate with various types of raw materials. This includes maize bran, No 3 meal, maize silage, corn & cob, cotton, and sunflower cake. Molasses can also be added to enhance the palatability of the ration. For more information on how to use the feedlot concentrate, please refer to the Novatek Feedlot 85 leaflet.

Piket Implements:

Boost profits with conservation farming by Morné Venzke

N

o-tillage farming is a quite simple idea, but very progressive. It simply means that you do not plough your land before you plant your seed. This practice started in 1960 in the USA and since then increased in popularity by over 69% globally. In 1962, studies on no-till farming started in the USA at the Ohio State University. These studies focused on the total microbial biomass the soil holds, meaning the usable nutrients and beneficial organic matter existing on the land. Results gained by the Ohio State University showed that after the introduction of no-till farming, the total microbial biomass increased significantly, and furthermore, the carbon loss in the soil decreased after every planting season. Studies in South Africa showed a 32% profit margin after introducing notillage, in comparison to 19% profit on conventional farming. The reason for

conservation farming on a daily basis and works closely together with the farmers as well as testing institutions to adapt their own planters to comply with the latest results they retrieve from the field. One successful South African farmer, Anton Bower, says: “If you buy a Piket planter, you buy into 80 years of studying the science of different planting techniques.” This is true since Piket Implements is 87 years old. South African farmers say that they specifically enjoy their no-till conservation Maize Multi Planter, as this planter can plant not only maize, but also soya beans and other fine seeds. Their no-till conservation fine seed planters are used by dairy and cattle

the more fertile land is quite simple. By not turning your soil, you leave a layer of mulch behind, acting as a “roof” on top of your soil. The roof covers and protects the rainwater in your soil from the sun and other elements, keeping your soil nice and moist, which is perfect for seed germination and plant growth. As the soil remains moist, organic matter is naturally formed, allowing your soil to return to its natural condition. When this happens, important organic matter will build up in your soil, and this will attract beneficial organisms and earthworms, all vital to soil fertility. A Piket Hydraulic drill can be adjusted for deeper seed placement.

Broader tyres on the hydraulic drill is used for better weight distribution and less soil compaction A Piket maize planter cuts through hard soil in tough conditions. Once your soil fertility is boosted, you will obtain higher yields from your farmland and use less fertiliser on your healthy soil. You can imagine the reduction in input costs, not only on fertiliser, but also on fuel and labour costs, since no ploughing is needed. The Piket Implements family consults farmers in South Africa on no-till

farms to establish rich pastures. Their smaller, eight row fine seed planter, in the same range, is one of the best planters available for planting cover crops between citrus trees and vineyards. Piket observed that the trend of conservation farming is becoming increasingly popular in Zambia, as farmers want to increase productivity by boosting the quality of their land, and it is working. One Zambian commercial farmer, Alex Harris, said: “For me it was great to learn that I can now buy a first world quality planter, manufactured right here on our doorstep.” Piket Implements is pleased that they can serve farmers of Zambia too, and will build relationships to help agriculture grow in this country.

N

ew and enhanced genetics is like a fresh breeze for every farmer and we salute the scientists who went through painstakingly precise, experimental processes to ensure that farmers can farm easier and more profitable. The piggeries in Africa will rejoice in the arrival of the TN70 genetics, developed by Topigs Norsvin, a worldfamous Dutch pig genetics breeder. The TN70 already showed significant improvement on the TN60 predecessor in the countries where it is already introduced. Built on our global research, innovation and absolute commitment to integrity and biosecurity, Topigs Norsvin’s close partnership approach means your farm benefits directly from their experience, energy and passion. Topigs Norsvin was the first breeding company to implement selection for piglet survival in its balanced breeding programme. Their vision is a sow that can rear many high-quality, fast growing piglets all by herself. Zambian Pig Genetics (ZPG) has been distributing Topigs Norsvin genetics throughout Central Africa since 2015. Outside Zambia, they serve countries such as the Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Angola and others in the region. Their genetic stock is specifically suited to the central African environment. They recently introduced the TN70 to the African market with the support from Topigs Norsvin South Africa. The TN70 is a cross between the Topigs Large White and the Norsvin Landrace. She has excellent mothering skills and is a highly prolific, easy in

use sow with an amazing weaning ability and a top contribution to finishing pig quality. She produces large litters of strong, uniform piglets that excel in fast, feed efficient growth and carcass quality. The TN Tempo Boar needs no introduction and together with the TN70, extraordinary offspring is guaranteed. TN Tempo brings robustness, uniformity, fast growth potential, and excellent carcass qualities to the table. The TN70 is an excellent mother which strengthens these qualities by contributing the best feed efficiency to the finishers, compared to any other sow on the world together. There is no doubt that the TN Tempo and TN70 combination offers you the potential to produce the higher output at the lowest cost. Independent researchers also agree on the outstanding abilities of the TN70. The Danish University of Aarhus concluded that this breed has excellent mothering skills while simultaneously producing the same number of weaned pigs per litter with fewer resources. This just proves the strengths of Topigs Norvsin's TN70 sow, as already experienced by many farmers all around the world. The further findings of the study were: Piglets born from a TN70 sow are, on average, 264 grams heavier at birth, which makes them stronger and less vulnerable to hypothermia. TN70 sows have enough teats to feed their offspring and so the piglets have a higher chance of surviving and developing properly. This all results in a higher weight at weaning.

Internationally bred TN70 pig that thrives in Africa. ProAgri Zambia 57

TN70 sows are world renowned for their mothering skills and high weaning percentage.

Gain full control over your pivots with Valley’s 365™ platform

by Benine Ackermann

V

arious reasons convince farmers all over the world to choose Valley for pivot irrigation. After all, Valley offers the best water utilisation, and enables the farmer to accurately control his pivots from any spot on earth. “Valley pivots stand firmly, for they are designed and built to withstand high wind speeds,” says Francois Griesel, Valley’s Regional Sales Manager for Southern and Eastern Africa. “Furthermore, the propulsion is controlled by the Valley gearbox which is, without a doubt, the best the market can offer. This is effected by Valley’s meticulous quality tests. “Valley’s integrated control systems can be upgraded as technology develops. The farmer need not buy a whole new system to benefit from the latest technology on the market. A new module is simply added,” Francois says. A well cared for Valley pivot usually outlives the farmer. Therefore, Valley offers the owners of old models an

option of “Don’t replace – repipe”. “Some of our pivots are forty years or older and still running. We thought it proper to make the special offer to make older pivots look like new. Now the farmer need not buy a whole new system, but simply replace the pipes of his old pivot. In this way, he can save on costs.” Valley 365™ – Control everything from one place “The Valley 365™ platform that was announced during NAMPO Virtual 2020, is an electronic platform that the farmer can load onto his phone, tablet or laptop computer. The platform gives him access to all the various pieces of equipment that he can use to peruse soil and weather conditions, and to control his pivots accordingly from wherever he may find himself at the moment. This enables him to exercise full control over irrigation on his farm,” Francois says. “Valley 365™ offers the farmer organised analysis reports. These reports link in with the AgSense options. Therefore, if you have an AgSense licence, you will gain free access to the Valley 365™ platform,” Francois adds.

This is the Valley 365™ app displayed on a cellular phone.

The benefits of the 365™: • Efficient – Existing applications integrate easily, enabling the farmer to use one interface for access to all his pivots. • Accessible – This cloud based platform offers a simpler, more intuitive user experience. • Intelligent – Puts all

the data together. Extendable – Farmers may add options themselves. Safe – The app is very safe and constructed with the latest technology.

Valley weather station – your eyes in the storm Access to accurate weather data is one of the best ways to improve harvests, and the new Valley® weather station is an important aid to forecast weather conditions and analyse weather patterns. Francois says: “The weather station can also be linked to various other technological aids to give the farmer an overall view of the water needs on different parts of a farm. Should you have land in various areas, you can, for example, erect weather stations in Thabazimbi, Christiana, and Welkom, and receive readings from them all. Then you can programme your pivots to run faster or slower to apply less or more water. This way, you save on electricity, water, and long-term costs.”

Valley is the dependable pivot with a long life that continuously gives the farmer even more control and convenience. Benefits of the weather station: • Easy to install • Mobile access • Increased productivity – an e-mail informs the farmer about changing weather patterns • Informed decisions – Information about temperature and humidity helps the farmer to make better decisions • Increased accuracy • Field specific data – Receive data directly from the field. • Peace of mind – You do not have to go to the fields unnecessarily Valley’s dealer network stretches all over Southern and Eastern Africa with more than 80 service points for technical services. For more information on Valley’s 365™ options, contact Francois Griesel at Francois.Griesel@Valmont.com, or +27(0)67-412-9089.

"By following the preseason and midseason preventative maintenance checklists, you’ll be able to greatly reduce the risk of system failure and downtime during the critical irrigation period.” – Todd Merryman, Reinke Manufacturing, Manager of Technical Services

t is important to make sure your pivot is operating in tiptop shape no matter what time of the year. Now that preseason preventative maintenance has come and gone, the next step is to identify what you should focus on during midseason. By following the midseason preventative maintenance checklist, you will be able to ensure your pivot is operating smoothly during the peak of the growing season. The next time your pivot is parked along the edge of the field or close to a pivot road, take some time to inspect the system’s components and ensure they are functioning properly. Locating a potential problem and taking preventative measures to fix it before additional damage may occur, will save you crucial downtime and costly repairs.

Contact your Reinke dealer If a problem does occur with your irrigation system, it is beneficial to locate the issue early to prevent further damage down the road. Do not hesitate to contact your local Reinke dealer for answers to all your questions. Reinke dealers are trained and certified service professionals who are equipped with the knowledge needed to troubleshoot and resolve any issue that may occur. Reinke dealers are able to eliminate system downtime by having a selection of genuine Reinke parts on hand to get you up and running as soon as possible. Before calling your Reinke dealer, make sure you have the relevant information available to help speed up the service.

"Finding a flat tyre in the middle of a hot maize field can be like finding a needle in a haystack. That’s why I take extra time to inspect my pivots to try and prevent an issue before it may happen.” – Wade Walters, Farmer

"The advantage of using Reinke Genuine Parts for repairs is knowing you are backed by Reinke quality and a warranty.” – Hunter Walls, Walls Irrigation

Weather precautions Being exposed to the elements 365 days a year may increase the risk of weather damage to your pivot. Make sure to inspect your system carefully after severe thunderstorms for any structural or electrical damage that may have been caused by lightning, water, or wind. If your system does not run properly and you suspect there is electrical damage, contact your Reinke dealer immediately. Never tamper with any wiring or electrical components yourself.

Information requested by the Reinke dealer: • Your name • System serial number or identifier • System location • How does the problem affect the system? • What was the system doing when the problem occurred? (parked, running wet, running dry) • Is it an intermittent problem? • Are there any commonalities regarding the problem? (time of day, location in field, high or low temperature and main control panel settings)

ProAgri Zambia 57

Inspect the drivetrain to ensure things are running smoothly during irrigation season.

• • •

What action, if any, has already been taken to try and remedy the problem? What is the level of urgency for getting this system back in service? How do you want the system left when the repair is completed (stopped or running)?

"I like to gather as much information beforehand, so I can come prepared with a possible solution before I reach the field.” – Jarrod Watson, South Central Irrigation

Irrigation made easy part 7:

Scheduling according to weather conditions. I

f a farmer has access to a local weather station, or weather station data, calculated Penman-Montieth ETo (Evapotranspiration) values can be obtained. Penman figures are calculated estimates of the amount of water that would be used by short grass. The values are calculated from data on temperature, wind run, evaporation and sunlight hours. Actual crop water usage for any crop will be directly proportional to Penman values. Example: Cabbage need 75% of the Penman ETo from day 14 to day 70. Irrigation can then be adjusted to supply this calculated water requirement only. Scheduling using Tensiometers A tensiometer directly measures how hard plant roots suck to try and remove water from a sealed glass tube. The tensiometer comprises of a glass tube that is filled with water, a pressure gauge that measures suction (negative) pressure, a porous ceramic block and a small reservoir of water. The meter is placed in the field with the ceramic block in the centre of the root zone. A second tensiometer or wetting front detector can be installed below the root depth to indicate if any over-irrigation has occurred.

Picture 1: Placement of a tensiometer. The water reservoir must be filled on a regular basis, and the cap sealed. The tube section of the tensiometer must always be filled with water. Suction pressure is read off the gauge provided and provides a direct measurement of how hard roots around the ceramic block are sucking 20

to draw up water from the soil. The plant will always first use water that it can suck up easiest. If the soil profile is full, the plant will not have to work hard to get water and can concentrate energy on growth and crop production. If the soil is dry and the plant must suck hard to get water, it will start to wilt and may die. If the gauge reads (-) 50 to 60 kPa, then approximately 50% of the soil water has been used by the plant. In other words, the roots belong to a well organised trade union. If they have to work very much harder to get water, they will suck water at a slower rate and the plant will stop growing.

Sprinklers deliver water at an increased to 9 hours. Longer periods of effective 6 mm per hour. A tensiomirrigation will waste water and energy, eter has been installed at each stand and fertilisers will tend to be washed position of the first sprinkler in the away below the root zone. block. Each day the tensiometer that represents the area that will be irrigated on that day is read. The duration of irrigation for the day is read off a scheduling chart that was prepared prior to planting of the crop. (Two examples are shown, for tensiometer readings of 30 and 50 kPa). Note: A separate scheduling chart is needed for Picture 3: A tensiometer in a maize field test.

Bayer partners with emerging farmers to ensure increased profitability S

uccess is attained by people who work together. The English poet, John Donne, once famously said that no man is an island. People need each other in order to survive. It is not different with farmers. Successful farmers did not start out on a commercial scale. Through years of hard work, dedication and gaining expertise, their farms grew from small enterprises to the commercial operations they are today. Apart from the financial resources that farmers need to take their farms to the next level, they also need the knowledge to operate a commercial farm. Bayer realised that emerging farmers need knowledge and skills to help them succeed. Farmers and the companies that supply to them need to form symbiotic partnerships to develop the farmer’s full potential, secure future food production and stimulate the economy. That is why Bayer launched the Weekend Farmer concept in Zambia in September this year. The aims of the project are to capture emerging farmers' attention and to help them realise their full potential. According to Emmanuel Banda, Brand and Customer Activation Specialist for Bayer in Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Weekend Farmer concept will provide emerging farmers with tailored solutions that can ensure profitability and sustainability. This will enable emerging farmers to generate employment within their communities and strengthen the regional economy. Emerging farmers are an extremely important and fast-growing segment in the agricultural industry of Southern Africa.

Bayer encouraged other industry specialists to join the project. “This is an ideal opportunity for collaboration between major agricultural companies to invest in their future clients,” says Emmanuel. Correct advice It is important that the information shared with the farmers is accurate and relevant to that specific farmer’s needs. That is why Bayer will look at specific value chains in order to bring the correct companies and farmers together, and to provide quality information and training. In doing so, Bayer will be able to provide the emerging farmer with the correct advice across his specific value chain. Bayer will provide the correct advice on the choice of seed and crop protection products, while other collaborators will provide information on soil testing, mechanisation, and marketing of the end product. This will empower the farmer to set up a sustainable and profitable business strategy that can help him to transform from an emerging farmer to a commercial farming business. All that farmers have to do to benefit from Bayer’s Weekend Farmer project, is to simply phone the project manager, Henry Mutelo. He is highly qualified and will be able to provide expert advice on the farmer’s needs. The farmer will engage with Bayer’s qualified and skilled expertise on the day to day management issues concerning his farm production activities. Bayer will provide the necessary technical information to help support your farm and can also help you

PlantCatalyst gives small farmers a leg up E

ach new planting season brings a renewed sense of hope, urgency and focus. It is a time to plan, a time to budget and a time to try new things. Farmers in Zambia, and around the world, are navigating a planting season through COVID-19. They are adding extra care measures to help ensure the safety and wellness of our farm workers, market customers, neighbours and friends. We are also witness to the dangers and impacts of the climate change crisis unfolding around the globe. From wildfires that have engulfed the western part of the United States to the tragic death of hundreds of elephants on the African continent that scientists have linked to toxic bacteria in water, resulting from warmer temperatures. In the same manner we add protective measures for COVID-19 dangers, we must also add protective measures for climate dangers. And that starts with our soil. PlantCatalyst® has been working with farmers to add natural and safe solutions to crops during the planting season. The key is to enhance the nutrients in soil to improve the way cells absorb water. They have dedicated years of research and rigorous testing to learn what works best, both in terms of making a product that is easy to use, and one that delivers results, including boosting yields and increasing profits. By cutting the need for expensive and soil damaging chemical fertiliser, farm-

ers on all scales, large or small, can save money. “My family developed PlantCatalyst® on our family farm in South Dakota over many years, with the belief that each new planting season calls for new ideas,” John Willard says. “In the spirit of helping our friends, neighbours and community improve their crops and strengthen their soil, we developed a solution that helps farmers far beyond our front gate. That is why it is an honour, especially in this time and at this moment, to be part of the farming movement in Zambia and across Africa. Together, our mission is to help the world grow a better future.” “We have been working with farmers in Zambia for two years. We’ve listened, we’ve learned and we’ve helped our farmers innovate, maximise yield, and get substantially better profits. As we get ready for our third planting season, we are paying special attention to smallholder farmers and smaller commercial operations. We are helping them increase yield and profits through the partnerships we’ve developed with organisations such as CFU, iDE and World Vision. In tandem with our ongoing efforts serving large corporate farming organisations such as Seedco, Zambeef and others, word is getting around about our revolutionary PlantCatalyst® product and the amazing successes farmers are having when using it,” John Says. “When my grandfather, award winning chemist, Dr John W Willard Sr, invented this product almost fifty years ago, he had high hopes that his 'new' invention could benefit mankind for generations to come. He always said, 'I didn’t invent this product to make rich

people richer, I invented it to help the little guy get a leg up.' I am proud to say that the work we’re doing in Zambia and throughout the entire region is starting to fulfil my grandfather’s dreams,” he says.

Freight Innovations' transport solutions T

he COVID-19 pandemic caused the inconceivable to happen in chain supply management, and dramatically affected businesses that relied on the cost effectivity of the just-in-time delivery concept and lower stock holding. Chinese imports from many suppliers to Southern African businesses ceased for a number of months and this caused many well and long-established companies, particularly in the promotional clothing market, to close. Freight capacity and costs became inverse in proportion where usually the opposite exists. Freight Innovations was able to stabilise and maintain services during most of the pandemic due to its well-established international network, and has increased market share in this segment. Freight Innovations can deliver cargo into Namibia from South Africa at competitive rates, and its footprint spreads across Southern Africa and SADC countries. Clients include manufacturers of vehicle accessories, and equipment such as aluminium canopies and

trailers, outdoor pot plants and fireplaces. International quotations for air and sea freight are available and insurance can be included on request. Charges depend on the commodity and value. The call centre or quick quotes online is the fastest option, with international shipping being a most popular option for clients who export smaller packages due to the price, online tracking, and a quick quoting option. A feature that appeals to regular clients is the consistency and reliability of the service levels. It remains

popular due to the expertise and knowledge of the staff. The young team is dynamic, and their youth belies the level of expertise. Leo Nompiyo entered the freight industry as a junior assistant some twenty years ago, and his career gained momentum when he was appointed nightshift manager. In 2011, Leo joined the Freight Innovations team as an experienced member, and added to the success of the company as an operations supervisor. Ricardo De Freitas has been in the industry for fifteen years. Ricardo has a wealth of operational knowledge in the national road and air industry. He is well versed in freight and can handle any emergency with ease. As recently as two years ago, Robertha Jass joined the team as a novice, however, due to her careeroriented personality and the upward mobility in the company, she ably holds the position of company secretary and accounts assistant. Freight Innovations has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception, and the management maintains that it is the personalised, fast and efficient service that holds the key to a successful enterprise. If the past decade is anything to go by, then that philosophy certainly rings true.

Fert Seed & Grain Ltd MONO AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE (MAP-11 N:52P) SuperFert Mono Ammonium Phosphate is a perfect basal dressing fertilizer that is rich in phosphorous (52%P) and nitrogen (11 % N) to support young plants and promote quick root formation. Improved nitrogen levels also support chlorophyll and photosynthesis in young plants, at the critical stage when its genetic potential is established. Nutrient requirements vary at different stages of plant development, which is why applying the correct fertilizer at the right time will improve your yield, thereby providing the needed food security at household level. At Fertilizer, Seed & Grain Ltd, we encourage feedback from our farmers so that they can share their experience with our SuperFert fertilizer blends. We wish to thank all our esteemed customers within and outside Zambia for trusting SuperFert as their preferred fertilizer of choice.

Applied in the hatchery with each chick individually being vaccinated 5. Beer protecon against Newcastle disease and Gumboro. 6. Improved chick performance.
