he new growing season for farmers in Zambia also heralds in a new era of promised growth for the whole country. ProAgri Zambia joins the agricultural industry in congratulating His Honourable Mr Hakainde Hichilema on his election as President. Who better to lead the country and the industry than a person who refers to himself as an ordinary "cattle boy"? He has herded his family's livestock in his youth before going on to become one of Zambia's richest men. As leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND) he has been in the run for president for quite some time now. Mr Hichilema graduated with an MBA degree from the University of Birmingham in the UK. He went on to make a fortune in finance, property, ranching, health care, and tourism. He told voters that they needed a successful businessman to understand how to get the economy moving, but he also used his agricultural roots to appeal to the country's farmers, saying he could turn Zambia into a food basket for the region. Unfortunately, one of his first unpopular actions will most likely be to cut fuel and farm subsidies. This is

needed to secure IMF funding for more sustainable growth, but it will not make things easier in the short term. Meanwhile, good news for farmers is that the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) says it will continue buying maize from farmers until October 31st despite reaching the purchase target. FRA Public Relations Coordinator, John Chipandwe, says the agency has so far purchased over 534 000 tonnes, exceeding this year’s target of 500 000 tonnes. He dispelled rumours that the agency has stopped buying maize, and encouraged farmers to continue delivering their maize to their nearest FRA depots. From ProAgri Zambia we wish all farmers the best of seasons and hope you can make use of the valuable information in this issue. Remember, if you miss out on a printed copy, everything is available online at www.proagri.co.za. We would also like to echo the words of one of the farmers we interviewed for this issue: Make use of the expert advice offered by suppliers. Farm smartly! Jaco Cilliers jaco@proagri.co.za

Managing pests

W

ith temperatures rising, growers are experiencing increased pest pressure from common insects such as lepidoptera, aphids (aphidoidea), and whiteflies (aleyrodidae). Growers should follow recommended key steps to ensure they get the correct insecticide for their pest infestation before buying any insecticide. Syngenta offers a range of insecticide solutions. The newest addition to the Syngenta range is PlesivaTM Star, a new systemic solution with dual modes of action against hard to control sucking pests, including neonicotinoid resistant whiteflies (aleyrodidae) and lepidoptera pests, mainly for use in tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, tobacco, and other crops as listed on the label.

Key steps to selecting the right insecticide

Insect pest identification Precise insect pest identification is the first step in coming up with an effective pest management programme. Never attempt to start spraying when you are unsure of the pest, as the application of the wrong insecticide will have cost implications and can waste valuable time. The more knowledgeable the grower is about the pest, the factors that influence its development and its manifestation, the easier it is to successfully implement the best pest management programme costeffectively. Crucially, growers must know the lifecycle of the pest in order to know the best timing for the application of crop protection solutions. Contact Syngenta’s field experts through their helpline and Facebook page for assistance in the identification of pests and guidance. Decision making It is important to note that application of insecticides should happen preventatively or at the first signs of infestation. Regular scouting is important. Selecting the correct insecticide involves looking

at active ingredients, dosage rates, pre-harvest intervals and other technical information to choose the right insecticide for your needs. Over and above their innovative solutions, Syngenta offers technical support from their field team, which can help you make the right choice. Selection and spraying With all information in hand, growers should proceed to purchase their selected insecticide. Plesiva™ Star provides a robust and reliable solution for aphids (aphidoidea), lepidoptera (including tuta absoluta), whiteflies (aleyrodidae) and leafminers in tomatoes, potato tuber moth

(phthorimaea operculella), Colorado beetle (leptinotarsa decemlineata), whitefly (aleyrodidae), American bollworm (helicoverpa armigera), and aphids (aphidoidea) in potatoes. It also controls green peach (Myzus persicae), budworm (Heliothis spp.), leafminer, whiteflies (aleyrodidae), and false wireworm (tenebrionidae) in tobacco. Plesiva™ Star’s low dose rate and short PHI makes it a great choice, additionally, it is versatile and gives the grower the flexibility of use as foliar or soil application at the time of planting (in tobacco) as well as the peace of mind for use in integrated pest management (IPM) programmes.

Powerful & reliable

Your partner in fish business F

ish farming is an integral part of the profitable farming business in Zambia, which makes it of great importance to national economic growth. The fish industry adds a good source of protein to the human diet to scale up nutrition for the good health and well-being of the country. Tiger Animal Feeds plays a key role in the fish farming industry through the manufacturing of quality feed and offer clear technical services to farmers. For intensive cage culture (on large dams and lakes) we offer high protein complete feeds to cater for three growth phases namely, Fry/larval stage, Grower and Finisher. For the less intensive pond culture systems, we offer a supplemental feed designed to fill in the gaps of a largely algal diet. Feeding recommendations

Notes: • Average growth = 4,5g/ day overall • Expected FCR 1,3 - 1,4:1 max FCR 1,55:1 • Feed 5 times per day • The feed should be fresh, dry, and kept out of sunlight • Feed buckets should be kept clean and dry • Keep modules clean and remove excess feed and dead fish daily

The Intensive Cage culture rations are to be fed to appetite (ad-Lib). The Pond fish supplement is to be fed at 2% of Biomass per pond, from roughly 60 to 80g onwards. Medication / special additives There are no growth promoters or antibiotics in all the fish feeds mentioned above. The Pond fish supplement is to be fed at 2% of Biomass per pond, from roughly 60 to 80g onwards. The Vitamin and Mineral Premixes have been formulated using special ingredients that are not denatured in the pelleting and extrusion process. General comments The rations outlined above have been formulated and developed in conjunction with fish specialists and have been tested in cage cultures and integrated pond systems in Kariba and Kafue respectively, delivering very good results. All the above feeds have been developed with Tilapia farming in mind.

Tiger Animal Feeds offer a wide range of feed for each type of fish farming operation.

Economic considerations / profitability Growth is dependent on many environmental factors because fish are cold-

blooded. Water temperature, oxygen levels and water quality (hardness and pH) are the most critical factors. Genetics, as always, plays a huge role in terms of performance, and selecting for higher mature weight should be a key point in any breeding strategy. Fish have the potential to grow rapidly on relatively small quantities of feed, provided all three key factors are in balance namely genetics, feed and management.

Amazone UX 11201: a beast amongst sprayers Biggest crop sprayer on the African continent

A

source of frustration for all crop farmers is the short window periods during which crop spraying is possible. Whenever pests occur, the farmer should spray his crops as quickly as possible to prevent extensive damage, and to beat weather conditions during which spraying is impossible. Therefore, a bigger sprayer that allows to cover larger areas per day makes perfect sense. When it comes to trailed sprayers, the Amazone UX 11201 is in a league of its own. In fact, as the biggest crop sprayer on the African continent, this sprayer is redefining the future of agricultural equipment. With an enormous tank capacity of 12 000 litres, no job is too big for the UX 11201. Coupled with the Super L2 or L3 sprayer booms in working widths of 24 to 40 m and its double pump system with suction capacities of up to 900 ℓ/min, it makes short change of large crop fields or crops that require particularly high application rates. For even more impact, the UX 11201 can be equipped with the ultramodern AmaSelect, an individual nozzle control, boasting integrated LED lighting and the latest CurveControl technology.

delivered such a beast of a trailed sprayer to grain and cattle farmer Heinrich Schönfeldt in Caledon in the Western Cape. Heinrich’s farming operations work on controlled traffic lines and his focus is firmly set on economical farming practices through precision farming. An immediate change to 3 300 mm centre to centre was made to the track width, and after a thorough training and post-delivery inspection (PDI), it was all systems go to commission the biggest crop sprayer on the continent. According to Heinrich, who has been making use of Amazone equipment for the past 25 years, the UX 11201 is a welcome addition to his equipment fleet of two ZA-M spreaders, a ZA-TS 3200 spreader and a ZA-TS 4200 spreader. For the past ten years, he has been

He acquired the UX 11201 for its increased productivity capabilities which allow him to spray up to 600 hectares per day while the reduced cost of using a trailed sprayer (he saves up to 50% on diesel costs) further makes good business sense. He can now also better utilise his Claas Xerion tractors. Heinrich’s aim is to only utilise the Amazone UX sprayer while reserving the self-propelled sprayer for canola production. And what is next for Heinrich and his Amazone fleet? He considers moving up to 48 m booms to effect a further saving of 25% in production costs, where a bit more ground clearance is required. Wise sheep farmers use

Rumax's pellet machines

D

orper ewes are picky eaters, therefore if you spread out their mixed rations for them, they will pick out all the delicious bits and leave behind the less tasty fibre that is actually good for them. Christo Dorfling from Weenen in South Africa is a potato, maize, and pig farmer, but his Dorper stud is his pride and joy. He cultivates, mills, and mixes his own feed rations for his sheep, but there was wastage due to picky eating. “Another problem is that they cough and sneeze from the dust in the fine feed, and I have had many cases of prolapse,” says Christo. Prolapse or rupture occurs when the anus is pushed out due to the pressure when there is constant coughing or sneezing. His solution was to pelletise the feed. He says: “Since I started using the Rumax pellet machine, I have not had a single case of prolapse. There is less waste, the pellets reduce the dust factor in the feed, the sheep grow well and at the end of the day I save on my feed bill.” Another bonus is that during the heating process, phytoestrogens that may be in the mixture are destroyed. The oestrogens contribute to the phenomenon of prolapse.

Christo did a lot of research to find a suitable electric pellet machine that could do the job well and that did not break the bank. He says he does not need a giant machine for his herd of 400 sheep, but when the machine runs, it must be able to do the job thoroughly and without interruptions. They make around three tonnes of pellets a week with the right formulations for the different age groups and pregnant ewes. He plants yellow maize for his animals and once the maize has been harvested, he then sows vetch and oats that are grazed through the winter. The last growth is left to mature so that he can cut and bale it. It forms the roughage component for the feed mixtures. At feeding time, the bales are cut and mixed with the necessary concentrates, and then it gets pelleted with the Rumax pellet machine for the sheep. Christo installed a conveyor belt on the machine to make handling of the material easier. The small machine does not have a built-in cooler like the larger models. The temperature of the pellets that come out are between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius, therefore the bags need to stand open overnight so that the

The Rumax pellet machine easily makes three tonnes of pellets a day for Christo Dorfling’s Dorpers. pellets can cool off; hereafter the bags can then be closed and packed away. Christo is very satisfied with Rumax's service. Shortly after the machine arrived on the farm, there was a problem with the chain. “I called Johan Steyn at Rumax. Two days later I had a brandnew axle and chain, and I never had a problem again.” Rumax's machines are built to last in Africa. Maintenance is also easy. The last material of the day that you insert should be dry so that it can clean the sieve, and furthermore you just need to grease the chain and make sure it does not slack. Contact Jaco Pieters at +27 82335-3970, +27 23-342-6070 or jaco@rumax.co.za for your feed solution. Also check out their other equipment at www.rumax.co.za.

Grow your business with Novatek feed

A

s a pig farmer, you know that when your pigs grow well, your business also grows. For your pigs to grow optimally, you need to give them the best feed possible. This is why it makes good business sense to partner up with the market leaders in the feed industry in Zambia, Novatek. After more than two decades in the engineering profession, Bwembya Chikwanda saw a commercial opportunity in providing good meat to the expanding middle income market in Zambia. He embarked on this new career path with ten sows on a piece of land on the Chifwema road, and now he has 80 sows, with plans to expand to 300 sows. “If there is one piece of advice I can give other new farmers, then it is to make maximum use of the information provided by companies such as Novatek. I adhere to the Novatek feeding programme with excellent results; even better than expected,” says Bwembya. The target is to grow a newborn piglet in 24 weeks (6 months) to reach a good slaughtering size of 100 kg. With good management practices and good feed, Bwembya has managed to achieve this weight in 21 to 22 weeks. “The longer you keep your pigs, the more they cost you, because they keep on eating but they don’t continue growing at the same rate,” he warns. Managing your farm An important part of the management programme is to provide good housing facilities for the pigs to maintain their

health through all seasons. Temperature control is essential. Bwembya’s pigs stay in well ventilated facilities with a high roof and large openings to allow movement of air to cool down the pigs in summer. In winter these openings can be closed to keep the heat in. Also essential is that the pigs should always have clean drinking water available. The facility also needs to be cleaned out regularly and waste must be removed. The right feed at the right time Bwembya buys maize from other local farmers and uses Novatek’s concentrates to mix his own feed. The secret is to use the right concentrate formulation at the right time in the production process. The needs of lactating sows differ from dry sows and boars, and Novatek provides a concentrate for each group. After the piglets are born, they drink their mothers’ milk for the first two weeks, getting in all the goodness nature developed over millenia. After that, Bwembya makes sure they get everything they need to grow fast and stay healthy. He says: “One of the attractions of the Novatek products is good feed conversion rates that helps with maximum weight gain for the pigs at their different stages of growth.”

Left to right: Bwembya Chikwanda (Owner), Wiehan Visagie (Novatek), Sydney Mweemba (Piggery Supervisor), Ishmael Mumba (Pig Consultant). This is the programme he follows: Week 2 to 5: Novatek Creep. Week 6 to 10: Novatek Weaner. Week 11 to 16: Novatek Grower. Week 17 until they leave the farm: Novatek Finisher. The business side of things Bwembya’s largest customer is Master Pork, a pork processing facility only 15 km away. Saving on transport costs is a major consideration when you start off with any farming enterprise, Bwembya warns. After having been in a management position in engineering for fifteen years, he also brought another valuable lesson to the farm and that is to keep your debt levels as low as possible. “It is much better to grow organically, even if you grow slower. The cost of borrowing is high and it can easily get out of control.” By following his own advice and listening to the experts in the field, his farming experience has been very positive. He says: “It has been a learning curve for me, but it is fulfilling and exciting once you get into it. It becomes quite addictive!”

You can also grow your farming business with the help of experts. Contact Wiehan Visagie at wiehan.visagie@novatek.co.zm or +260-979-763-250. ProAgri Zambia 68

Today’s investment is tomorrow’s peace of mind Technology in your farming operation is the driving force behind long-term resilience By Hentie Breedt, Marketing and Communications Manager, John Deere Africa Middle East

I

n times of economic uncertainty, making the right decisions has never been more critical because having a successful farming operation in South Africa means you need to set longterm goals that foster resilience. Without a solid foundation, your farming operation may be facing an uncertain future. Resorting to shortterm solutions may seem like the best decision today, but your farming operation will be ill-equipped to handle the challenges of tomorrow. Technology is the underpinning factor that will provide your farming operations with the resilience it needs for a sustainable future. The decision to use technology applies to all aspects of a farming operation, especially when deciding on the correct mechanisation equipment to purchase for your farm. If you rely on equipment alone to ensure the success of your operation, you may miss out on the opportunities that come with technological innovation. To ensure the prosperity of your farm, your approach needs to be less equipment-orientated and more solution-driven. Gone are the days when a tractor was just a tractor, or a harvester was just a harvester; your equipment has now become the means to a long-term, sustainable goal. Therefore, this means you need to prioritise the latest technology to realise maximum efficiencies, optimal

work performance, minimum downtime, higher outputs and achieve a higher resale value. Solutions-driven technology can be applied to every level of mechanisation; for example, by using an efficient planter that optimises seed and fertiliser placement, yield percentages can be drastically increased. As a farm increases in size and capacity, efficient data collection and management becomes essential. By introducing technology, data can be handled seamlessly. Data can be tracked and converted into appropriate and workable inputs for each step of the farming and cultivation process. Effective data management provides farmers with the insights they need to prepare for fluctuations in demand. Whether it is soil preparation, planting, spraying or harvesting, technology will reduce fuel consumption while maximising profitability. A sustainable, resilient farming operation is possible with the latest technology provided by John Deere. By monitoring the performance of your equipment over a distance, coupled with data collection that is processed by the John Deere's Operations Center and JDLinkTM, your farming operation is built to last. Technology is available to farmers at all levels and is designed with the farmer’s needs in mind. These innovations range from bolstered

propulsion systems to driver comfort optimisations. With greater visibility and better lighting, you can keep your tractor going for longer: John Deere effectively connects machinery, people and technology. Decision-making around future investments is crucial to ensure longterm success. One aspect of this is the resale value of equipment when it is no longer needed or needs to be replaced. Make sure you invest in equipment that, although it has a higher initial purchase price, will result in savings over its lifetime due to the latest technology. An almost assured high resale value offers an excellent longterm investment on the road to farming success. The sustainability and success of any business is only as strong as its ongoing support structure, even more so in the farming environment. John Deere has one of the best dealer support networks in the world. We work hand-in-hand with our dealers to offer agricultural solutions, not only from an equipment and technology perspective but also with extensive after-sales support. With trained technicians equipped with all the spare parts needed, our technology communicates service alerts in advance, directly from your equipment to your John Deere dealer, ensuring minimum downtime of machinery and tools, especially during critical times.

Balanced crop fertilisation:

Increase your yield and profitability

P

lants require chemical elements to build up their bodies and to produce fruits to be consumed by animals and humans. Among 63 elements listed in Mendeleev’s periodic table, 17 are the most important for plants. They are classified into non-mineral nutrients and mineral nutrients. Non-mineral nutrients or non-fertiliser elements are those that are found in the air and water: carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). Almost half of a plant's dry matter is comprised of carbon (C). It is the primary energy source and building block for plant tissues. Plants use light energy to transform carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) into starches and sugars. These starches and sugars are the plant's food. Mineral nutrients are absorbed by plants’ roots from soil solutions. They are subdivided into three subcategories: • The first three nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). They are consumed in large quantities and known as primary nutrients.

The second group consists of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulphur (S), and is also called the group of secondary nutrients. They are followed by nutrients required in significantly smaller quantities, known as micronutrients (boron, zinc, molybdenum, et cetera).

The healthy growth and development of crops rely, among other factors, on the availability of nutrients in the soil. Mineral elements are subject to leaching, fixation by soil particles, organic matter and biota, and removal with harvested produce. It is therefore necessary to apply manure and inorganic fertilisers onto the field to avoid nutrient mining and preserve soil fertility. One should remember that none of lacking nutrients can be compensated for by a surplus of any of the others. So, one nutrient alone cannot ensure the yield. The major objective of balanced fertilisation is to provide crops with a combination of nutrients in proportion to requirements at every growth stage. The balance between

ProAgri Zambia 68

nutrients synchronised with plant nutrient demand is prerequisite for yields according to genetic potential. In Zambia, growers in general apply D-compound fertiliser at planting as basal dressing, and urea fertiliser as top dressing. This fertilisation strategy shifts nutrient supply towards N and P, while putting the K soil pool at risk of depletion and K undersupply. Zambian soils may contain high levels of K, but most of it is in the form that is unavailable for plant uptake. Well-balanced fertilisation technology is evidencebased through conducting numerous field trials. United Fertilizers Company Limited (UFCL) aims to share knowledge about balanced crop fertilisation and its importance for sustainable crop production with people who work on the ground, by organising demonstration plots, field days, lectures, and online webinars. Feel free to visit UFCL at GART National Seed Fair, Agritech Expo and Cotton Development Trust.

Make it, don't buy it:

Piccalilli

P

ickles generally fall into two categories, namely clear pickles, and thick, saucy pickles such as piccalilli. Pickled vegetables are preserved by the addition of acid, salt, and sugar. A wide variety of sweet pickles are available, varying with the vegetables used, the degree to which the vegetables are softened by cooking, and the type of sauce used. The texture of the vegetables thus varies from crisp to soft. Common vegetables include cauliflower, carrots, celery, tomatoes, cucumber, and onion. Spices include salt, turmeric, mustard, ginger, garlic, and red chillies. A wide range of recipes is available, reflecting different approaches and ideas, different consumer preferences, different preparation methods and equipment, and economic considerations. This is therefore a very basic description of the preparation and preservation of a thick, saucy pickle. The manufacturer or would-be manufacturer can develop his own unique product with the principles discussed in this article. The vegetables and the sauce are prepared separately and combined just before filling the jars. The vegetables may be cooked slightly in the sauce. The ratio of sauce to vegetables varies between 4:6 and 6:4. A refractometric solids content 35% and an acetic acid content of 2,4% provide both a satisfactory sugar/acid flavour combination and a safe preservation index.

Preparation of vegetables for piccalilli The selected vegetables should be inspected, sorted, and trimmed to ensure that only sound vegetables are used. The vegetables should be thoroughly washed to remove any soil, dirt, and other contaminants. Those vegetables in need of peeling, such as carrots, are peeled. The vegetables are then chopped or sliced into uniformly

ProAgri Zambia 68

sized pieces to ensure even acid uptake during storage. The vegetables are mixed and placed in a brine solution containing about 10% salt to soak overnight. The brine may be slightly acidified with lactic acid (<0,5%). Preparation of the sauce for piccalilli The sauce is prepared by combining the selected spices along with vinegar and sugar in a large open batch heater. The mixture is slowly heated and brought to boil to dissolve the sugar and extract the flavour from the spices. Cooking of vegetables in sauce for piccalilli The brined vegetables are drained and rinsed to remove the excess salt from the surface. The vegetables are then placed in the sauce and allowed to cook on a low heat (simmer) until the vegetables are just tender. Thickening of piccalilli sauce The vegetable and sauce mixture is thickened by the addition of thickening agent. Corn flour is commonly used and mixed with a little vinegar prior to addition to the sauce to prevent the formation of lumps. The mixture is further heated under constant stirring until the desired consistency is reached.   Bottling of piccalilli The hot, thickened piccalilli is poured into suitable, wide-mouthed glass jars that have been properly cleaned. The containers are hermetically sealed with self-venting, acid resistant lacquered metal closures capable of forming a

vacuum seal. A small headspace is left at the top of the jar. The final acid level of the product should be below pH 4,5 and thus only requires pasteurisation for long term preservation. Hot filling (at a temperature above 85 °C) of the piccalilli reduces the required heat dosage of pasteurisation. Pasteurisation of piccalilli Pasteurisation entails the controlled and limited heating of the pickles in sealed containers that are capable of forming a headspace vacuum upon cooling. It is impossible to give specific time and temperature requirements in a general article such as this, since sufficient pasteurisation depends on the size and dimensions of the container, the starting temperature, the type of equipment used, the type of product and pH. However, it is essential to institute the most rapid and efficient heating (and cooling) method possible to ensure that the product is not overheated, resulting in softening of the vegetables and a generally poorquality product. The hot piccalilli is filled into cleaned, preheated jars at around 85 to 93 °C ProAgri Zambia 68

housands of people all over Africa rely on community gardens to provide them with food and an income. Community gardens constantly gain in importance in poor rural communities. Irrigation plots are small, and it is often difficult to plan appropriate systems using conventional irrigation technology. Some of the equipment used to irrigate small areas in community gardens were developed for the urban garden. Irrigation systems developed specifically for small garden plots include hand-watering systems, bucket-drip systems, and short-furrow flood irrigation systems using portable hoses. Pressurised garden systems use mini-sprinklers and garden sprayers to distribute water. Garden sprayer systems differ from more conventional sprinkler systems. The systems are labour intensive, and farmers will spend much time moving sprayers. 28

Garden sprayers work at low pressure (between 150 and 200 bar). Small sprayers tend to spray water up against tall crops, and water will not be spread over the plot. Garden sprayers typically cover a small area. The spay radius will seldom exceed 6 metres.

Application rates are often very high and if the sprayer is left in one position for too long, water will run off and not infiltrate into the soil. These systems are normally designed so that the emitter (sprayer) is moved every 5 to 10 minutes. The farmer stays in the field the whole time and constantly moves emitters.

Small orifice sprayers This type of sprayer is the most likely choice for a small garden system. Water is forced into a swirling vortex and escapes through an orifice to wet an area of 7 to 8 m in diameter. A wide selection of orifice sprayers is available. Sprayers range from simple cast metal units to more elaborate plastic sprayers. 29

Flowrate (m3/h) Care should be taken to allow for the effect of friction in supply hoses when designing or operating these systems.

A single sprayer can be used to irrigate an area of up to 600 m2, or a number of garden beds. The distribution pattern of orifice sprayers is irregular. More water is sprayed to one side. This makes it important to always point the sprayer in the same direction when using the sprayer in the field. The system design will attempt to overlap the natural skewed distribution pattern to achieve an even distribution. If sprayers are not properly aligned, the application rate will be erratic and irrigation efficiency will be reduced. Orifice sprayers are closely spaced, with normal in-field spacing of between 5 and 6 metres. A single sprayer can be used to irrigate an area of up to 600 m2, or a number of garden beds. ZAMBIAN PIG GENETICS: MEET OUR SALES AND TECHNICAL ADVISOR AND INDEPENDENT VETERINARIAN FRANCISCO KASUBA is ZPG’s Sales and Technical advisor. He provides support for pig farmers in and around Zambia, specifically to those who are involved in artificial insemination (AI) and those who bought breeding animals from Zambian Pig Genetics Ltd. Pig production techniques

FRANCISCO KASUBA

Sales and Technical Advisor at the ZPG Topigs Norsvin production unit in Chisamba.

Francisco is excited and optimistic about the newly bred TN70 gilt/sow. He praises the TN70’s excellent mothering abilities, heavy weaning weights, and large litter sizes compared to previous TN60 gilts and other breeds on the market. Francisco further mentions that the TN70 gilt shows more prominent signs during pre-heat and post-heat periods, making them easier to breed than other animals. Farmers should consider introducing the TN70 gilt to their herd to maximize their production.

DR. PIOUS SIMFUNKWE is ZPG’s (Topigs Norsvin) independent veterinarian who has been on board since 2018. He assists ZPG farmers across the country with artificial insemination, with an average of 10 to 15 gilts every week. Dr. Simfunkwe is satisfied with the results of introducing the “TN Tempo Boar Semen” to pig herds of different Zambian pig farmers. His clients are impressed with the results of using TN Tempo Boar semen: • Improved uniformity • Excellent growth rate • Increased litter sizes

Dr. Simfunkwe encourages pig farmers to introduce TN Tempo Boar semen to their herds for improved production, especially for herds struggling to achieve desired market weights. Contact Dr. Simfunkwe: +26 (0) 97-716-0562
