Your participations and contributions on this magazine is highly appreciated very much. The attitude of doing it whatever it takes is the key to progress. Thank you for your untiring support and the noise that we have on our facebook closed group is unimaginable. I hope you could bring more friends in here and let them experience a ‘virtual camaraderie across the globe. I’m welcoming you all again to this wonderful platform Purebred Warrior Digital Magazine where everyone has a freedom to express themselves in a clean and wholesome way of communication through posting of any related materials about gamefowl, breeding and raising gamefarm to the next level. To be honest, it’s not that easy on my part having a day job of my own and at the same time meeting the deadline on all of my creative task. I know there’s no room for me to give up and it takes only an encouraging words from those newly found friendship on this platform. I am indeed so grateful for having them on this project. I have so much respect to these gentlemen because even though I’m a totally stranger to them, they never let me down on the hopes that I could bring this magazine to the world who truly love the sports. This 2nd issue are very challenging yet fulfilling on my part. I am so happy that I can able to work this out with the help of my newly found friends on this industry. Sourcing articles and materials from contributors and most of all the proofing are not that easy, it takes hardwork to compile everything. Conceptualization, layout and design are one of my biggest concern too. The first issue was a bit careless for me because it hasn’t been properly proofed and I have to apologise with it, but this time I’m doing some progress on this project. The interviews from a well-known breeders up to the backyard breeders are all outstanding. Pure honesty and sincerity is what they can offer. The quality of their gamefowls are top notch. Hats off to you gentlemen! On the cover story, you will know more about Brent “The BrunerMan” Easterling of L&L Gamefarm on how he properly managed his farm and how close he is to Larry Morris who’s the origin of the bruner bloodline lies within. Check out the Q&A interviews of Angel Nagaya of 2 Brothers Gamefarm , Allan Cinco of A&B Gamefarm, Dave Lao of Badcat Gamefarm and Tyler Easterling of Swift Creek Gamefarm. To gather more insights and knowledge about breeding and their achievements, p lease check our facebook page and our website: www. purebredwarrior.com for more interactions. The special feature from “The Boloman” - Bolo Cortez of Hawaiian Hillbilly Gamefarm about ’Producing more good fowl consistently’ is a must read article and the “Blast from the past rivalry of the North vs South main by Keith Maze is indeed another good read too. I hope you will continue to support this digital magazine by subscribing and please share this platform to your connections and let them know that there is a newly found hangout for all aficionados. Good health for everyone, peace and blessings! Your cock-a-doodle-doo-friend, MHAR

BRENT EASTERLING THE BRUNER MAN

Born and raised in Alabama. I love this sport and my fowl, second to only the good Lord and my family. I try to do my best by my fowl and I thrive off of negativity. The negativity only makes me want to be better and produce better results in this sport. I refuse to be content in just one bracket and I always try to hold myself to a higher standard. I am true to my word because honesty will take you far.

are, the stupid opponent will be jumping into his knives if sasabay siya sa talon. One-two hit and then it’s over. As experienced by Robie Yu Panis, herself (farm manager and in-house lady gamefowl gaffer) of the Firebird Gamefarm fame, fighting with

white Kelsos. Johnny Jumper, Out & Out Kelsos have been known to be really smart fighters on top of power, speed and multiple shuffle or evasion tactics. Some pundits will say the pure breed ones lack cutting ability, but this is from the old days. Most Kelsos today have already been crossed with good cutters, sothey are something to watch out for! The new Kelsos still got the speed and gameness of the purebreed Kelsos, but are now deadlier with the cutting and plumage of your preferred cross from whatever gamefowl, from Brown Reds to Roundheads or even the Sweater. Walter Kelsos’ originals themselves break high, are multiple shufflers but weak cutters when bred pure from those days when cockers were adamant about bloodline purity. The Kelsos did not gain these amazing gamefowl traits themselves from pure line breeding but from crosses with winning gamefowl that Mr. Kelso would purchase on the spot, during his days breeding fighters. Look for really good cutting gamefowl like roundheads and brown reds or greys which are also game to the core. Kelsos may be both yellow and white legged but the white legged ones are preferred by some buyers.

FIGHTING COCK: THE STYLE

Whitehackle T

he Whitehackle gamefowl are straight combed with red eyes and are medium stationed. While 90% are yellow red in color, the remaining 10% are spangled, mustard colored hackles. These fighters are built with broad shoulders, fairly compact and with heavy plumage, each rooster having an average weight of 2 to 2.4 kgs. The Whitehackle is a very deadly cut-

ter, break high and can fight in any position available due to their agility and shiftiness, on the ground and in the air. They are strong and power hitting fighting fowl with very deep game. Described by veteran gamefowl aficionados as a ring general, the Whitehackle fights best using the long knife slasher type. This beautiful rooster is a very smart fighter and has accurate timing that places deliberate blows

to kill its opponent. It is also a very aggressive rooster. Because this strain has been carefully sustained by smart breeding over the years, it is still a consistent and proven bloodline that wins big. Floyd Gurley bred the modern version of the bird straight pure blooded stock to create a unifrom bloodline that consistently tops its opponents in the pit until today.

FIGHTING COCKS

HOW TO PRODUCE BATTLE COCKS THE AIM OF EVERY FIGHTING COCKS BREEDER IS TO PRODUCE A SUPERIOR BATTLE COCK.

t

he reason we cross strains is to strengthen weaknesses, and elevate strengths. One of the most successful formulas for breeding fighting cocks is by breeding a power cock over a speed hen. The result is usually well balanced battle cocks that possess all the traits we look for in fighting cocks. Some guidelines in order to produce superior battle cocks are the following: Dark Legs over Light Legs,

22

Round bodies over Long bodies, Dark colors over light (and visa-versa), aggressive cocks over Smart fighting hens, Small cocks over large hens (and visa-versa), and Old cocks over pullets, Old hens over stags. Cross breeding is a breeding system that is applicable in this system in order to produce a superior battle cock. Cross breeding usually improves the average performance of the first generation as in out breeding, and many aces are thus produced. However, generally, the breeding

value of the offspring is greatly reduced. A simple definition for crossbreeding is the crossing of two unrelated closely inbred lines. Roundhead fowl crossed on the Hatch fowl of would be good example. Gamefowl breeding is one of the most challenging tasks because you need to do some trial and error in order to achieve your goal. You need more time, money, and effort and do some research to produce good battle

crosses. And besides, today there are many good breeders that produced better or best gamefowl that is very hard to defeat in the major derbies like world slasher cup and candelaria derby.

>> COVER INTERVIEW | BRENT EASTERLING <<

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING GAME FOWL FOR BREEDING?

Gameness, traits, body conformation, overall health from chick to stag/cock, station, performance. I look at everyday changes (if any) before I put fowl in a brood pen. This is the same with my pullets/ hens. Their parents, brother’s performance, station, body, health, and attitude are all considered.

ANY TIPS FOR BEGINNERS?

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS SPORT?

My dad, Jim Easterling, got his first fowl in 1963 and he never looked back so I guess you could say that I was born into this sport. While growing up, other people my age would be at the lake or school proms etc. and I chose to be on the farm watering and feeding and going to shows.

WHAT FAMILIES OF FOWL DO YOU BREED? Bruner RH, Kelso, Butcher and Regular Grays

WHERE IS MOST OF YOUR FOWL SOLD TO YEARLY?

Mostly crossed stags are sold to Mexico. My brood fowl is mostly sold to California, Texas, and the Philippines.

HOW MANY CHICKS DO YOU CURRENTLY HATCH EACH SEASON? I hatched around 2,500 this year and I plan to up that number to 3,000 next year.

WHAT’S YOUR MAIN BLOODLINE?

I would have to say that the Bruner RH is my main bloodline.

26

I’ve never personally seen fowl that can match their athleticism and cutting ability. They are the best crossing fowl that I have ever owned.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE L&L GAME FARM NAME?

My wife, Kassi, and I named our twin boys Landon and Lincoln and unless I miss my guess, I’m sure they will take over one day hence the name L&L.

WHAT CURRENT GOALS DO YOU STRIVE FOR IN THIS SPORT?

To breed and raise the best, healthiest fowl possible. To make it possible that when people hear or mention RH or Kelso that they attach the name L&L to it.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAMILY WHO ALSO ATTENDS THIS SPORT? No Comment

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION ON CULLING?

I think Culling is one of my most important parts of raising my fowl. If I wouldn’t own it, I’m not going to sell it. People who don’t cull hard only care about the money and not the fowl or the customer.

Do your homework, don’t overwhelm yourself with a ton of different breeds. Don’t pay attention to the name of the fowl, pay attention to the results, get yourself 2 or 3 lines and on perfecting them. Don’t be cheap when it comes to selecting and purchasing your fowl. In this sport you get what you pay for. Take pride in your fowl and take care of them if you want them to take care of you. Never settle for anything less than healthy fowl.

ANY ADVICE OR TIPS ON HOW TO PREPARE FOWL FOR A SHOW?

Learn your fowl, every bloodline is different. In my opinion the key to winning is cutting ang that comes from the amount of work VS. rest.

WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY IN THIS SPORT? Omit please

SO, YOU DO THIS FOR A LIVING?

Yes, when I decided to go from a hobby to a lifestyle I devoted my whole life to it. My shorter days are 10 hours and sometimes the day goes until the next morning. It makes me happy and also makes a way for me to provide for my family. What more could you ask for?

>> COVER INTERVIEW | BRENT EASTERLING <<

ANY HEALTH TIPS YOU CAN PROVIDE OUR READERS WITH TO HELP THEM CARE FOR THEIR FOWL BETTER?

I think health is the most overlooked part of this sport. Without quality heathy fowl your going in reverse and you will never get ahead. Everyone has heard the expression “an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.” I live by that. Don’t just walk past your pens or cords, get to know each and every one of your birds. They all need different care. ****

>> INTERVIEW | ALLAN CINCO <<

CAN YOU TELL US WHO IS ALLAN CINCO INSIDE AND OUT OF YOUR FARM? Inside and out of my farm, I am literally the same person, I have my own principles, philosophy and natural ways of living. I don’t need to wear somebody else’s shoe because I do have my own shoe to fill in and I would love to express myself as who I am. For me, I have both respect and high regards to all of my colleague or partners working on my farm. They are just like a family to me, trusted good friends always there to remind you. WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON BREEDING AND WHY? My biggest influenced is my father. When I was a child we always had chickens in our backyard and my dad always had this inseparable connections to the fowls. Secondly, I am delighted to introduce to you my uncle BOY who influenced me very much as of today. I remember, when we used to leave in Manila though the place is quite small but we still manage to have some chicken around and while their cages are just right next to the kitchen. HOW DID YOU EVOLVE IN COCKFIGHTING? I, myself evolved into this sports when I came to Dubai. I got my sources to start breeding seriously specially on money matters. I started to acquire some good bloodlines from a respected breeders and champions from derbies. Way back from year 2011, through the help and assistance of my uncle, he was the man and up until now managing my farm while I’m away working in Dubai.

30

YOU MENTIONED YOU ARE AN OVERSEAS FILIPINO, IS IT HARD TO MANAGE A FARM WHILE ABROAD? Indeed, Iam an OFW and yes its true and no joke taking this path. It is very difficult to manage your own farm while away for something else, but with the help of social media now a days and comes with a technology you only need a trusted workers and good compensation and yeah, just phone calls away and thanking God for nothing is impossible when you love what you do and do what you love everything falls into its places. I am always been grateful and thankful for I have a trusted uncle who’s always

in touched and care about me not just the farm itself. His experienced of taking good care of the farm from breeding, conditioning and pointing are unimaginable, he’s a gifted man on this field. You could not ask for more for of him being a trustworthy and hardworking human being. I hope and pray that everything is in good hands and well to his family. Last vacation, we enrolled ourselves at TJT Cocking Academy to gain more knowledge and insights and it was very helpful. I encourage him to attend seminars because breeding and cockfighting is a never ending

industry, you need to adapt new ideas and understanding from everyone who love the sports. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU’VE GOT SO FAR WHILE AWAY FROM YOUR FARM? Since my farm is not that big and I’m still consider myself as a small time breeder and everything are in my hands and I am still dependable on my salary, but when it comes to a challenges, the biggest would be when my salary comes late and chicken feeds are almost running out, I felt

I’M SURE YOU EXPERIENCED A LOSS IN A FIGHT, TELL US HOW YOU MANAGE TO OVERCOME YOUR EMOTIONS? Yup! everyone does! No one ever been on this planet had a chance perfected the way of living even the all time legendary on this sports. But for me, in every loss I’m in it teaches me to understand or to learn what happened on that fight itself. Is it because there’s a mistake on our side as the handler or the conditioner and or there’s somethings wrong with our fowl on the day of the fight? There’s a lot to consider but most of all it teaches us to accept defeat in a battle, teaches us how to be humble and to be true gentleman. This experienced gives us motivation, to prepare for the

coming fights and be ready for it. If there’s wrong on our side we need to rectify it or if theres’ needed more attention on how to condition and point very well before the fight, we will have to do it. Even though we loss the fight, I always have this attitude to cheer up my team because losing is part of everyone’s success. We need to accept it fully and move forward. There’s this saying: Ang maginoong sabungero ay marunong tumaggap ng pagkatalo.” WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT AND ACCOMPLISHMENT AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? As a gamefowl breeder I don’t have any disappointments so far because I love what I’m doing and this gives me a self-fulfillment seeing my fowls from a day old until they become a true warrior and extend their line from the next generation to come. One of my accomplishment is selling my breeded fowl to its new owner and knowing that they are winning the fights and they are breeding for more of its kind. This gives me more happiness

>> INTERVIEW | DAVE LAO <<

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF? I’m David Lao and Dave is prefered by friends for short. I come second, of four siblings. I’m also a son, a husband to a beautiful wife and a father to four lovely daughters. HOW DID YOU START BREEDING GAMEFOWL? I was first into show dogs for quite some time. Then there’s this friend of mine who financed the entry of Carol Nesmith in 1997. I was invited to watch the derby and that was when I first saw the sweaters. I fell in love with them, it’s the first time I ever saw such beautiful birds. I asked to buy some of the winners and they were kind enough to share them. From then on it’s been 21 years now. WHAT ARE YOU REALLY INTO OUTSIDE OF WORK? I was into media and entertainment business, but is now retired. I am now a full time breeder of gamebirds. WHO WAS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN BREEDING? I can’t name just one, because there are three of them. First of all, I was mentored by the legendary Carol Nesmith. He is also like a father to me and treated me as family. He didn’t just taught me, he made sure I understood. Second, is Edwin Aranez. He’s been a good friend. Having great bloodlines is nothing if you don’t know how to raise them. In my book he is the best observer of gamefowls and he taught me how to manage and give the proper care for them. Third, is none other than Mr. Nene Abello. He gave me all the information I needed. He was there when the best

ones were bred and how they came about. It’s the kind of information that will help any breeder. Because gamefowls, unlike dogs and race horses have available printed pedigrees. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE ASIDE FROM BREEDING GAME FOWLS? -I hope to win every time just like anybody else. WHAT ACHIEVEMENT DO YOU HAVE SO FAR?

>> INTERVIEW | TYLER EASTERLING <<

HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR FARM AND FOWL EFFECTIVELY?

Effectiveness starts with a plan or vision. You must consider the type of fowl it takes to win in today’s competition and breeding for constant performance. Farm management bends to the needs of the fowl. Nutritional needs of the fowl must be met, constant supply of fresh clean water, land as far as not over crowding the fowl. Everything that we do here stays constant on meeting the needs of the fowl to produce the healthiest fowl possible. You must have a good work force to implement these management practices.

WHAT ARE YOUR STRUGGLES IN TO THIS BUSINESS?

The struggles are many we live in rural Alabama power outages and erratic weather during early breeding seasons. Making sure we Billy and Tyler 1st place Intercontinental Derby Guadalajara, Mx.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF?

My name is Tyler Easterling Coowner/operator of Swift Creek Game Farm.

HOW DID YOU START BREEDING GAMEFOWL?

I was born into it, I’m a third generation cocker. My Grandpa started and my dad and uncle followed and they kept it going.

WHAT ARE YOU REALLY INTO OUTSIDE OF WORK?

Besides work I have a love for the chickens. I wish I could spend more time with them. Also in my spare time I’d like to raise a garden.

WHO WAS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON BREEDING AND WHY?

I would have to say my biggest

42

influence would be my dad Billy and my uncle Bobby, they have been very successful and I just watched and learned from them. We just kind of do it all the same way.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE ASIDE FROM BREEDING GAMEFOWL?

I would like it if my biggest achievement was being a good person, trustworthy, and reliable, and when the time comes to be a good husband. And be a good father like my dad has been to me.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS GREAT SPORT? It was just a family thing. My dad and uncle have showed the roosters for as long as I can remember. It’s just what we do..

IN TERMS OF RECORDING YOUR GAMEFOWL, HOW IS IT IMPORTANT AND HOW YOU WORK ON THIS?

I would have to say as a breeder keeping specific records of the fowl is the most important thing. At the earliest age of chick hatching we start the marking process. Followed up by wing banding a penning time. It is very important to keep strict records of your base fowl so it’s not to be inbred to closely and also selecting performance individuals to carry on the blood effectively.
