NENE ABELLO UNVEILED: CRAFTING EXCELLENCE IN GAMEFOWL BREEDING
Journey into the compelling world of Nene Abello , a ‘Roosterman with a Purpose,’ as he unfolds the rich tapestry of his lifelong devotion to roosters, the inception of the Possum 226 line, and the meticulous craft behind his gamefowl breeding empire.
By Mhar Delaben
Good day, Mr. Nene Abello. Before we delve into the interview, could you share with us your perspective on who you are as a gamefowl breeder? Good day. As a gamefowl breeder, I define myself as a ‘Roosterman with a purpose.’ My journey with roosters began at the tender age of five, and since then, I’ve dedicated my life to these birds. Proudly, I’ve cultivated a reputation as a passionate and dedicated breeder, striving for excellence in the intricate world of gamefowl. My identity revolves around a deep-rooted love for roosters and an unwavering commitment to honing their genetics for optimal performance in the arena.
Tell us about your history on how you start in this sport.
My journey into the realm of gamefowl commenced during my formative years when I was captivated by roosters. While financial constraints limited
my ability to afford them initially, my passion for these birds spurred me to acquire a few. As I delved deeper, my commitment and hard work propelled me into the heart of the sport. Engaging with experienced cockers, I built connections and gradually expanded my presence in the community. Despite starting with limited resources, the consistent success of my roosters earned them recognition and support from fellow enthusiasts.
Can you tell us more about your farm?
Certainly. My gamefowl farm is comprised of three to four distinct areas, each serving a specific purpose. One of these areas is situated in the city, primarily used for the fights where I bring my roosters to compete. I also have a designated breeding area where hens prepare for production, and I house breeding stocks along with holding pens for young stags.

Additionally, there’s a cord area where my brood cocks are kept on the grass. Furthermore, I maintain a range area capable of accommodating around 4000 range chickens, both male and female. This space ensures proper care and breeding conditions for a significant number of chickens. Moreover, I’ve secured a lease in the mountains, providing an ideal environment for the molting and rejuvenation of my roosters before competitions. This diverse setup allows me to cater to the various needs of my gamefowl and maintain optimal breeding conditions for their success.
Do you think cockfighting will go at some point?
No, I firmly believe that cockfighting will endure and remain an integral part of our culture. The cockpit serves as a unique space where both the affluent and ordinary individuals find common ground, engaging in the shared passion for the sport. In this arena, people from different walks of life come together to witness and participate in the competitions. The love and support for this sport run deep, extending to even the political arena. Cockfighting enjoys widespread participation and advocacy, ensuring
its sustained presence and popularity for generations to come.
How many bloodlines do you currently breed?
I currently manage several bloodlines within my breeding program. One prominent bloodline, in particular, has proven to be highly successful, consistently maintaining a superior winning percentage compared to others. Whether pure or crossbred, these lines have garnered significant demand in the breeding community. Additionally, I oversee a few other bloodlines, although in lesser numbers, ensuring a diverse breeding portfolio. Alongside these, I keep two or three distinct and intriguing bloodlines on the side. These are yet to be fully integrated into my yard, awaiting the
opportune moment when their real fighting potential is revealed. This strategic approach allows me to continually refine and diversify my breeding endeavors.
How important and systematic you are in terms of recording your gamefowl? The recording process is paramount in my gamefowl breeding operations, and I emphasize its importance with meticulous attention. Precise and systematic record-keeping is essential for understanding the outcomes of different bloodlines and ensuring a successful breeding program. Maintaining accurate records requires a dedicated and trustworthy employee who follows the recording program meticulously. This systematic approach is non-negotiable, given the complexity

of managing multiple bloodlines. The recorded data becomes a crucial tool for tracing the success and performance of each rooster and pullet, allowing for informed decisions and strategic breeding practices. Personally, I am deeply involved in this aspect, recognizing its significance in avoiding mishaps and maximizing the effectiveness of the breeding program.
The advice you could give to young breeders who are just getting started?
For young breeders venturing into the world of gamefowl breeding, my advice is rooted in valuable lessons from my own journey:
1. Source from Reputable Breeders: Start by purchasing gamefowl from reputable and reliable sources. Extensive research on potential breeders is crucial, as the foundation of your breeding program depends on the quality of your initial stock.
2. Passion, Dedication, and Hard Work: Approach gamefowl breeding with passion, dedication, and a strong work ethic. This trifecta is the key to success. Be prepared to invest time, effort, and patience, as breeding requires consistent dedication.
3. Start Small, Seek Guidance: Begin your breeding endeavors on a smaller scale. Seek advice from experienced breeders who can provide guidance and share their insights. Learning from those who have walked the path before you is invaluable.
4. Prioritize Health and Well-being: Ensure the health and well-being of your gamefowl. A healthy flock is the foundation of a successful breeding program. Regular veterinary check-ups, proper nutrition, and a clean environment are non-negotiable.
5. Record Keeping: Establish a systematic record-keeping process from the outset. Accurate records of each bird’s lineage, performance, and breeding details will be indispensable for making informed decisions in the future.
6. Patience is Key: Be patient. Success in gamefowl breeding doesn’t happen overnight. Surmount challenges with perseverance, learn from setbacks, and continuously refine your breeding techniques.
7. Start Small, Scale Gradually: Begin with a manageable number of birds and expand your operation gradually as you gain experience. This allows you to adapt and learn without overwhelming yourself.
8. Community Engagement: Engage with the gamefowl breeding community. Attend events, participate in discussions, and build a network of fellow enthusiasts. The exchange of knowledge and experiences within the community can be immensely beneficial.
9. Remember, successful gamefowl breeding is a journey that requires a combination of passion, knowledge, and continuous learning. Stay dedicated, absorb insights from experienced breeders, and enjoy the rewarding process of seeing your efforts come to fruition in the arena.

Do you have any philosophy in life?
Certainly, I hold several life philosophies close to my heart. If I were to distill it into one guiding principle, I would say, “A healthy body is a healthy mind.” As someone deeply entrenched in the world of gamefowl, maintaining personal well-being is paramount. The demanding nature of this profession requires robust health and vitality, ensuring I can give my best to the birds under my care.
This philosophy extends beyond the physical realm, emphasizing the interconnectedness of mental and physical health. As a ‘Roosterman with a purpose,’ a clear mind and a strong body form the foundation for success in both personal and professional aspects of life.
What do you think of this magazine?
I hold the view that this new magazine is excellent and highly informative for all aficionados in the gamefowl community. The publication’s content and approach seem to cater to the diverse interests and needs of enthusiasts, providing valuable insights, updates, and engaging stories related to our shared passion. One of the reasons I agreed to this interview is my desire to support and encourage this magazine. A well-crafted magazine dedicated to our niche not only enhances our collective knowledge but also fosters a sense of community among gamefowl enthusiasts. I believe such publications play a crucial role in keeping us informed, connected, and

inspired in the dynamic world of gamefowl breeding and cockfighting.
Origin Of The Sweaters
The origin of my Sweaters traces back to the Yellow-Legged family of chickens, known today as Sweaters. In the 1960s, these chickens were originally fought by Sweater McGuiness. Notably, game breeders like Harold Brown, Duke Hulsey, and Ray Hoskins acquired this breed for its exceptional qualities, using them as brood fowl.
Initially, Sweater McGuiness focused on breeding and fighting Green-Legged chickens. However, through his breeding program, he achieved the transformation of these fowl into the distinctive Yellow-Legged ones. The exact method behind this transformation remains a mystery to this day.
My involvement in this lineage dates back to the late 1980s when Gene Brown and Carol Nesmith, under Oak Grove, dominated major competitions in the US with their Sweater and Ray Hoskins yellow-legged hatch crosses. Following their partnership’s dissolution, I acquired both Sweater families, finding them well-suited for Philippine fighting.
These Sweaters from Carol Nesmith had roots in Harold Brown’s lines, initially featuring
green legs before ultimately losing the yellow-legged color. My breeding journey involved crosses with Round Head chickens owned by Ray Alexander, contributing to the development of a unique and successful Sweater bloodline. The strategic infusion of blood from Harold Brown and careful selection yielded a family of Hatch chickens that exhibited superior genes.
Over the years, my dedication to refining the Sweater lineage persisted. Acquiring Yellow-Legged blood from Ray Hoskins and further breeding adjustments brought me closer to the original blood that Sweater McGuiness triumphed with. The result has been a formidable breed of Sweater chickens that have excelled in major competitions, including securing championships in the World Slasher International in 1995 and 1998, among other prestigious derbies.

When the partnership fell apart, I acquired both Sweater families, finding them more suitable for Philippine fighting.
These sweaters owned by Carol Nesmith derived from lines that came from Harold Brown. Mr Brown preferred the green-legged side and eventually lost the yellowlegged colour.
Before this, I was an associate and friend of Ray Alexander, who had a superior of Round Head chickens. I bred these Round Heads with the Sweaters with unbelievable success.
Then realizing that we had to be more durable and longerlasting than the competition, I bred a family of Hatch chickens containing some Harold Brown blood. This cross seemed to awaken superior

genes which were otherwise dormant.
When my brother and my son were living in the Dallas, Fort Worth area, I was a constant visitor of Ray Hoskins.
I had acquired some of his YellowLegged blood and also put them together, and I was getting closer to the original blood that Sweater McGuiness had won with back in the day.
With our breed of Sweater chickens, we won in major competitions like the World Slasher International where we were champion in 1995 and 1998; RunnerUp in 1996, as well as the Iloilo Candelaria Derby (one of the most prestigious fights outside of Metro Manila) where we had seven straight wins. 2002 and 2003.
Our prize-winning game fowls are available for sale throughout the Philippines and Malaysia with inquiries coming from Mexico, Africa and the Middle East.

in the intricate world of gamefowl breeding and cockfighting, success isn’t merely a matter of chance or genetics; it’s about the painstaking process of conditioning these birds for the arena. It’s a realm where passion converges with precision, where breeders and trainers dedicate themselves to nurturing champions. Join us on a comprehensive journey through the fascinating art and science behind conditioning gamefowl for competitive excellence.
Understanding Conditioning:
Conditioning gamefowl is a multifaceted endeavor aimed at optimizing a bird’s physical prowess, mental sharpness, and fighting spirit. This process typically unfolds over several months, beginning with breeders meticulously selecting birds exhibiting desirable traits and genetics conducive to victory.
Physical Fitness:
At the heart of conditioning lies ensuring the bird’s peak physical health. This entails a rigorous regimen of exercise, meticulous nutrition, and attentive medical care. Breeders employ various methods, including roadwork to build endurance, controlled diets rich in
protein and essential nutrients for muscle development, and regular health check-ups to detect and address any ailments promptly.
Mental Preparedness:
Beyond physical fitness, mental fortitude is equally crucial in the competitive arena. Gamefowl are trained to focus, endure stress, and maintain aggression during fights. Trainers utilize a range of techniques, such as exposure to simulated fight scenarios, socialization with other birds, and positive reinforcement, to sharpen these attributes and cultivate a winning mindset.
Secrets of Success:
While certain aspects of conditioning are widely practiced, successful breeders often possess their own closely guarded trade secrets and techniques passed down through generations. These may include proprietary dietary supplements, innovative training methodologies, or even superstitious rituals believed to bestow luck and resilience upon the birds.
Ethical Considerations:
Despite its cultural significance in many regions, cockfighting remains a contentious and legally restricted activity in numerous countries. Advocates argue for its preservation as a traditional sport, citing its deep-rooted cultural and historical significance, while opponents vehemently condemn it as cruel and inhumane. Consequently, discussions surrounding the gamefowl industry often intersect with debates on animal welfare, ethics, and legislative measures.
Global Impact and Cultural Significance:

However, passionate breeders and enthusiasts continue to adapt and innovate, exploring new avenues for the sport’s sustainability and growth while preserving its rich cultural heritage.

COCKFIGHTING IN THE PHILIPPINES: TRADITION, CULTURE, AND CONTROVERSY
Delve into the vibrant world of cockfighting, locally known as “sabong,” in the Philippines, exploring its deep-rooted tradition, cultural significance, and ongoing debates surrounding its practice.
By Mhar Delaben
cockfighting, or “sabong,” holds a special place in the hearts of many Filipinos, deeply ingrained in the nation’s cultural fabric. Beyond being a mere pastime, it is a cherished tradition that has endured for centuries, captivating enthusiasts and sparking spirited debates.
In the rural villages and bustling cities alike, sabong remains a ubiquitous sight, with cockpits serving as communal gathering spaces where friendships are forged and rivalries are settled. The atmosphere is electric, with spectators eagerly anticipating the clash of roosters in the arena.
At its core, sabong is more than just a sport; it is a reflection of Filipino identity and values. It embodies traits of courage, resilience, and camaraderie, as rooster
owners invest time, effort, and passion into breeding and training their prized birds.
However, the practice of cockfighting is not without controversy. Critics decry it as a form of animal cruelty, citing the inherent violence involved in pitting animals against each other for entertainment and profit. Efforts to ban or regulate sabong have been met with resistance from its staunch supporters, who view it as an integral part of Filipino heritage.
Despite the ongoing debates, sabong continues to thrive, with millions of Filipinos participating in or spectating cockfights across the country. It remains a lucrative industry, with large sums of money wagered on each match, fueling both excitement and speculation.
In recent years, efforts have been made to modernize
and regulate the practice of cockfighting, with the establishment of official governing bodies and the introduction of technology to enhance the breeding and training process.
These initiatives aim to strike a balance between preserving tradition and ensuring the welfare of the animals involved.
As the debate surrounding sabong persists, one thing remains certain: its significance in Philippine culture cannot be understated.
Whether viewed as a cherished tradition or a controversial spectacle, cockfighting continues to hold sway over the hearts and minds of Filipinos, reflecting the complexities of a nation deeply rooted in tradition yet ever-evolving in its embrace of modernity.

Strict breeding, which includes inbreeding and line breeding, is essential for maintaining the integrity of gamefowl bloodlines. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution, as inbreeding can amplify undesirable traits. Starting with brother-sister pairings allows us to identify any problematic characteristics early on. If issues arise, we adjust our breeding strategies accordingly.
We follow a systematic approach, progressing to parent-offspring pairings and subsequent crosses to diversify the gene pool. This meticulous process typically spans five years to establish a robust family lineage. The key is to begin with quality stock, as this lays the foundation for success.
Refreshing bloodlines is also necessary over time. Even the most carefully bred lines can become stale, leading to diminished performance. Introducing new blood, selectively chosen for compatibility and desirable traits, injects vitality into our breeding program.
In essence, strict breeding practices, coupled with judicious introduction of new blood, enable us to produce gamefowl that consistently excel in the arena. It’s a journey of patience and precision, but one that yields rewarding results at the pinnacle of competition.
