CREATOR’S NOTE
COVID-19 MADE ME A RUBIK’S CUBE SOLVER AND A BAKER...

espite losing my job last April and I’m still on the search for new opportunities, this pandemic taught me so well and here’s why: In every situation, there’s always either two sides of the story or two sides of the coin. I’m telling you this as my own personal point of view observation, not as general information. I think this chaotic pandemic is not a burden at all, indeed, it allows us to determine what better survival strategy do we have to take while whetting the routine of being a father, being active in the church community and being obedient expat of Dubai for observing their safety measure instruction. I’m going to spill the beans of my coffee! In every coin, there

are these two sides, the heads and the tail. The heads are always reliable in any particular decision making of your life like dwelling to the problem, entertaining negativity and taking things for granted. Certainly, it is worrying when you lose a job in times like this, and I know for sure, you were struggling too finding new opportunities behind the competition. Now, for the tail side of my story, and mark me, It is a true story! The tails are always looking up to where the heads may go and lead them. If your heads rest on the problem, then your tail probably be there too! You have to make sure you are looking for a solution, and not for something to dwell on it and have pity about it. This pandemic teaches me something to become the greater version of who I was. I’ve been into the design industry for more than a decade now. The skills, abilities and the good attitude that I acquired in my entire career in the UAE has been a big blessing to me. While the world still experiencing the wrath of the COVID-19, I took advantage of the time to learn new things like motion graphics, video editing, website designing with a little bit of coding for me to get close to my competition while searching for that next career adventure. The best part of being productive during the lockdown was stamping my 2 minutes and 41 seconds record solving the Rubik’s cube and me as a professional graphic artist turned baker!!! Yes, the one who kneads the dough! “LOL”. On this issue 9 of Purebred Warrior Magazine, we are so delighted to bring and give you the best of this gamefowl industry has to offer. We are covering Mayor Neil E Lizares III of BNL gamefarm and featuring the President of KYGBA Michael Terry of Whitehackle Gamefarm and Crystal Vaughn of Little Creek Farm, Ediomar Cambron of North Alabama Gamefarm, Henry Atienza of HB Red Braveheart Gamefarm and the last but not the least Jeffrey Rongcales of Redstrains Gamefarm. CHICKEN THOUGHTS
O HOW TO
START A
SMALL BUSINESS IN LIVE STOCK
IN BUSINESS THERE’S ALWAYS AN UPS AND DOWNS THAT YOU NEED TO DEAL, AND THERE’S SOME BUSINESS THAT YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE A BIG CAPITAL TO START WITH.
https://purebredwarrior.com
ne good idea to start a small business in live stocks is to raise a native chicken. You need to have a space in order to start this kind of business. The things you need to consider starting this business aside from space is the roosters and hens that you are going to be use in your breeding. You need to plan how much you are going to produced. For example, your target is to produce 100 chickens with in the period of 4 months, so you need to have 20 hens that are ready to lay eggs and 5 roosters. In the first month, let your hens to lay eggs, produce chicks after that, you are going to take care of the chicks for four months and then at the age of four months the chicken are now ready to sell in the market. There is no problem in selling native chicken because in the Philippines, lots of people who love and wants to eat native chicken. The usual menu for native chicken are chicken tinola, chicken binacol, native chicken lechon, native chicken adobo, and native chicken barbecue. You can sell your native chicken at 250 pesos per head. If you can produce 100 chickens in four months then you will have 25,000 pesos. You are going to less your expenses, for example 10, 000 then you will have a net income of 15,000. Aside from selling a four months old chicken, you can also sell a native chicken egg so that you can have another source of income out of your live stock business.

CHICKEN THOUGHTS
IN EVERY BREEDING THERE IS ALWAYS A PURPOSE, IF YOU WANT TO PRODUCE BREEDING MATERIALS LIKE BROOD COCKS, BROOD STAG, AND BROOD HENS, MAKE SURE TO PRODUCE A PURE ONE.
HOW TO BREED FIGHTING COCKS BREEDING OF FIGHTING COCKS IS NOT AN EASY JOB; YOU NEED TO HAVE MORE TIME AND MONEY IN DOING THIS AND LOTS OF TRIAL AN ERROR IN ORDER TO PRODUCE A WINNING BATTLE COCK.
8
PUREBRED WARRIOR VOLUME 2 - ISSUE NO.9
i
f you are a new breeder and you plan to start breeding fighting cocks, you need to find good breeding materials. If possible find a pure bloodline, for example if want to produce a battle cock, you need to find a
pure Kelso brood cock and a pure butcher brood hen in order to produce a two way cross battle cock. In my own experiences it is not good to produce a four way battle cock, for example some breeder use a ½ kelso and ½ butcher brood cock and cross breed it to a ½ roundhead and ½ hatch hen and the offspring is a four way cross battle cock composed of ¼ kelso, ¼ butcher, ¼ roundhead, and ¼ hatch. Two-way cross is much better than a 3-way or a 4-way cross. Take note that, in every breeding there is always a purpose, if you want to produce breeding materials like brood cocks, brood stag, and brood hens, make sure to produce a pure one. For example, if you want to produce a kelso brood stag then use a pure kelso brood cock and a pure kelso hen. There are several ways to do this, you can use in-breeding method or acquiring a pure kelso brood cock and a pure kelso hen from different breeders and breed them to produce a brood stag or brood hens. In-breeding method means to breed brother to his sister, but take note that their offspring will be use only for cross breeding and not to be use as battle cock.

The Ability to Keep Trying is what makes me stand out MHAR DELABEN: CAN YOU TELL US WHO MAYOR NILO LIZARES IS AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? MAYOR NEIL LIZARES: I’m just like any other breeder who loves to breed and see my chickens compete and be successful in the sabong industry. I take pride in it and enjoy the fun camaraderie with other breeders. I’d also like to be remembered as a gentleman in this sport.

MD: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS SPORT AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS INDUSTRY? MNL: I would say it was mostly a combination of genetics and exposure, as my late father loved to breed and compete in his days. I grew up seeing this lifestyle. These days, I breed and compete in the company of my late father’s closest friends - Tito Johnny Jalandoni, Tito Fred Montilla, Tito Boy Coscoluella, Tito Iñaki

I took up breeding full time in 2011. MD: WHAT COULD BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR COCKING CAREER? MNL: I would say when I won as a Solo Champion during the 2019 1st Pitmaster Cup, Visayas Breeder’s Edition, with a perfect score of 9 wins. It was memorable, and I was genuinely proud of that win. That same year, I also won the 2019 Negros Island Cocker’s and Breeder’s Association (NICBA) Championship with the perfect score of 8 wins. I am grateful for my team, and all our efforts paid off. MD: CAN YOU TELL US A BRIEF STORY OF HOW YOU STARTED BREEDING GAMEFOWLS AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THIS PATH? MNL: I have a degree in Agricultural Business and was helping out in our family business of sugar farming. I then got into the business of contract growing of chickens with San Miguel Corporation. It was also during this time that I became interested in solving the feed-conversion ratio (FCR) at my father’s farm. This inspired me to get a DVD on how to condition birds by the late Emoy Gorgonia (Tukaan) and the late

Doc Teddy Tanchanco (TJT). Their theories and methods increased my interest, and so one day, I asked my father if I can try to condition his chickens. He gave me his full support. I then joined a 3-Cock derby in our local cockpit (TCNC), and I fielded two entries and scored two wins each. The next derby that I decided to join was the P3million annual 7-Cock Mirasol derby at RGG, and I scored 6wins. That was the beginning of my serious interest in cockfighting and ultimately, in the business of breeding. MD: WHO INSPIRES YOU TO POLITICS? My mother’s great grandfather, Jose Ereneta, was also the first Mayor of Talisay. You can say politics is in my genes. At a young age, I eventually started my career as a public servant. Yet my late father advised me not to give up, as this is not an easy business and just like anything else, you will face setbacks. He told me to persevere. Then I met Dr Eddun Omambing of Thunderbird. He introduced me to their breeding program and vaccination through the help of Dr Paolo Reyes. This was the turning point of BNL GAMEFARM. MD: CAN YOU NAME A FAMOUS BREEDER WHO WAS THERE WHEN YOU WERE STARTING A BREEDING CAREER? MNL: I’m a big fan of Mr Nene Abello, and I consider him to
be my idol and mentor. He inspires me and has helped me by generously sharing his bloodlines of sweaters, breeding materials and techniques and a lot more. He gave me countless advice which I continue to use today. He once said to me: “you will become a top-notch cocker because you don’t settle for second-rate chickens.” I owe him so much of what I know about breeding and how to succeed in this business. I visit his farm once in a while to talk about chickens, have coffee and the shared love for dogs. I am also friends with his two sons as they are of my age. Throughout my breeding journey, Mr Johnny Jalandoni, my late father’s childhood friend, has always supported me, and he is like a second father to me. He handled all the chickens during the

We often talk on the phone, and I hope to visit him in the US when things go back to normal. MD: WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE BEING A BREEDER AND AT THE SAME TIME IN POLITICS? MNL: Like everything else, you need to learn how to balance. I wear many hats, and I strive to give my 101% in each area of my life. Being a public servant it gives me the opportunity to serve and help my community - which is very rewarding to me. Being a breeder allows me to continue my late father’s legacy, and I genuinely enjoy it as a way to relax and have fun.

I also want to give credit to my team and my mentors. Without their support and guidance, I would not be able to accomplish and thrive in this industry. I have big dreams, and there are still so much I want to achieve in terms of winning derbies and growing my breeding business. MD: WHAT’S YOUR THOUGHT ABOUT THIS JEALOUSY ROAMING AROUND SOCIAL MEDIA? MNL: The Sabong industry is not immune to controversy, and it is often fueled in social media. It’s a part of life and something you cannot control. I try to stay above it by focusing on my farm,
my team and grooming my birds to win the next big derby. Let your track record speak for itself, and it will always precede your reputation. It’s a big industry, and I believe there’s room for everybody. Just like any sport, may the best man win. MD: WHAT KEEPS YOU ON THIS COMPETITIVE SPORTS OF GENTLEMEN? MNL: Firstly, you must love the game and have the motivation to keep going in spite of setbacks and strong competition. I am blessed to be surrounded by wise mentors and a good support team. I strive to have good solid bloodlines and the discipline to breed the best. MD: WHAT BREED STANDS OUT ON YOUR FARM? MD: HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME ON THE FARM AND IN POLITICS? MNL: One of my wise mentors in politics once said, “Give your 101% best in your service to your constituents, and at the same time, know when to pull the plug.” It means taking a step back to take care of yourself to be effective. In my case, physically through exercise; mentally and emotionally through quality time and relaxation with my family, and spiritually through prayer and reflection. As I’ve said, balance is the key, and it takes a lot of practice, self-determination and discipline. I also consider breeding as a way to destress from work. There’s nothing more relaxing than watching your chickens grow and being on the farm where it’s quiet and away from the busyness of the city. MD: CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU KEEP A RECORD OF A SPECIFIC BLOODLINE? MNL: I try to make sure it’s a winning bloodline. And make a seed fowl and try to line-breed. The rest is a process which my team and I try to do consistently to ensure continuity and quality in our chickens.

MD: DOES THIS NEW DIGITAL MAGAZINE PUREBRED WARRIOR HELP OUR SPRAWLING INDUSTRY? MNL: Yes, I believe digital media is a great way to have a broader reach in terms of readership and exposure. It’s an effective way to engage breeders, fans and aspiring breeders to share best practices and learn different methods in breeding and bloodlines. Mhar Delaben: TELL US WHO MICHAEL TERRY IS AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? MT: I am the son of the late Norman Terry. I was born into the sport. I didn’t always enjoy as a child/teenager but the older I have gotten the more I appreciate the sport and the integrity of the birds. MD: BEING THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION, IS THERE ANY PLANS OR UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE GROUP? MT: Yes, we have implemented a poultry show side of the organization and we have a few already scheduled this year. Our goal is to educate and get the younger generation involved.
MD: WHAT STANDS YOU OUT FROM THE REST AND HOW YOU MANAGED TO MAINTAIN IT? MT: I am approachable and always welcome new ideas. I have the KYGBA’s best interest at heart.

MD: WHO WAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE THAT INSPIRES YOU? MT: My biggest influence was definitely my dad. I had such a respect for him not only as my dad but as a person. I love hearing stories of how people knew him and how much I remind them of him. I will continue to carry on his tradition.

MD: CAN YOU NAME SOME BREEDER THAT YOU GENUINELY CONSIDERED AS A GOOD ROOSTERMAN FRIEND? MT: I have been blessed with a multitude of fellow rooster men in the sport. Many who knew my dad who have helped and continue to give me advice often. MD: TELL US THE HISTORY OF YOUR WELLKNOWN BREED IN YOUR FARM THAT YOU HAVE AND HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR GAMEFARM NAME? MT: The history of the Morgan Whitehackles. My dad acquired the Whitehackles in 1956 from Harold Fiesinger from Syracuse, New York. They have been very good to the family all of these years. As far as coming up with the name dad insisted I come up with my own name so I couldn’t think of a better way to honor him than to name it Terry Farm and since the whitehackles are our foundational bloodline I chose to name it Terry Whitehackle Farm paying homage back to the name. MD: WHAT ARE THE EVERYDAY STRUGGLES YOU FACE IN YOUR FARM, AND HOW YOU MANAGE TO RESOLVE IT? MT: There are not enough hours in the day. As I continue to grow the farm I like to keep things single mated to know which are my best producers. As everyone knows there’s so much more than just feeding and watering to keep your birds at best health. MD: COMPREHENSIVELY, TELL US HOW YOU REGISTER OR RECORD YOUR FOWLS STARTING FROM CHOOSING YOUR BASE MATERIAL UNTIL THE MARKING DAYS? MT: With single mating I am able to collect eggs daily and mark those eggs. Doing that personally ensures me that I am keeping accurate records. Once they are

MD: WHEN EVERYTHING IS A SUCCESS, HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? MT: A humbled and godly man. MD: WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN IN THIS INDUSTRY ON A GLOBAL SCALE? MT: My biggest concern is that we need to stand united as a gamefowl community. To keep our sport alive we might not always agree with everyone but we need to set our differences aside for the common good of our fowl. I feel that social media has done us more harm than good as organizations that are against us are able to watch us. I find it sad that these organizations are not educated about the history of these birds nor do they care about their well being.
https://purebredwarrior.com
MD: WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AND DISAPPOINTMENT AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? MT: My greatest accomplishment would be continuing my dad’s legacy and also to continue to make upgrades and improvements to the farm. My disappointments would be not having him here to share the joys of our growth. MD: WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO WERE STARTING A BREEDING PROGRAM? MT: I encourage everyone to sIngle mate and keep excellent records. I encourage beginners to go in with a positive attitude and reach out to other breeders to
help you along the way but most importantly don’t give up! It doesn’t happen over night or even in the first year. Persevere and you will accomplish great things. MD: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS PUREBRED WARRIOR DIGITAL MAGAZINE AND YOUR FINAL MESSAGE TO OUR READERS? MT: I think it is a very positive and resourceful outlet for information. I always enjoy the information given from other breeders. Enjoy your time with your birds and always be thankful for the opportunity we have to raise them.

do the best you can I’M A FULL-TIME WIFE, MOM AND FARM MANAGER. MY HUSBAND CLAUDE VAUGHN AND I ARE THE OWNERS OF LITTLE CREEK FARM HERE IN HANCEVILLE, ALABAMA. LITTLE CREEK FARM HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE LATE 1950S.
Mhar Delaben: CAN YOU TELL US WHO CRYSTAL VAUGHN IS AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? Crystal Vaughn: Manager of Little Creek Farm MD: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS SPORT AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INTO THIS INDUSTRY? CV: My husband had his game chickens when I met him, and for 11 years we’re married, that’s long I’ve been involved in this gamefowl world. I have come to love the gamefowl as much as if not more than many men in this industry. I can’t imagine life without them.
MD: WHAT IS IT THAT YOU MOST ADMIRE IN THIS GAMEFOWL INDUSTRY? CV: I genuinely admire the most is the friendship that we have for anyone that turned into a family. We have so many friends in our circle that have become family throughout this journey. MD: HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR FARM AND OTHER PASSION YOU CURRENTLY HAVE? CV: I am a mom to 3 boys, so I have to stick to a schedule on and off the farm to make sure everything and everyone is taken care of. As a wife and mom, I enjoy the time we spend on the farm. I enjoy helping my husband

pursue this dream. It’s not just his dream but our dream. MD: WHAT ARE YOUR BEST PERFORMING BLOODLINES, AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE EACH OF THEIR ABILITY? CV: We are known primarily for our Greys and Kelsos. The greys are a law grey base family that we refer too as Dog Islands because of where we acquired them from. We cross them on our Kelsos which go back to the Johnny Jumper out and out Kelsos. The greys have excellent timing and cut, and the Kelsos have tons of ability and style. Both families have high power and are very very game.

MD: IS THERE ANY NEGATIVE SIDE ABOUT BREEDING? CV: The current laws in our country make breeding gamefowl a heartbreaking job for us here in the USA. We put our heart and souls into these fowl, and you see all the time where people want to make laws that criminalize us for doing so.
MD: WHAT SUPPLEMENTS OR ENHANCERS DO YOU USE DURING THE KEEP? CV: Nothing but clean water and quality feed, we don’t even use b-12. We worm them, clean them out, and put good gut bacteria in them thru feed. MD: WHAT WERE YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES DEALING WITH THIS FARM AND FOWLS? CV: Keeping them healthy, always being aware of the weather. Such as the temperature, rain and all that comes with the changing of the seasons. MD: HOW SYSTEMATIC ARE YOU WHEN IT COMES TO RECORDING? CV: Extremely so! Not only with the breeding record, but also with medications with the young fowl and also with hatching and setting #’s and dates. We keep calendars and whiteboards in the hatching barn to assist with keeping these records in order.
MD: HOW DO YOU TRAIN YOUR ROOSTER DAILY? CV: We rotate our fowl often and keep them mentally happy. Most of that stuff falls to my husband or our farmhand to take care of.
We keep calendars and whiteboards in the hatching barn to assist with keeping these records in order.
MD: ARE THERE ANY INTRUDERS ON YOUR FARM AND DESTROY ANY PROPERTIES YOU HAVE? CV: No, we have been fortunate not to have a big problem with thieves, but we have excellent camera surveillance and alarm system, and there is always someone here around the farm which is armed and ready to defend it. MD: WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OF A BREEDER? To maintain a quality bloodline over an extended period. MD: WHO INFLUENCED YOU TO BECOME A COMPETITIVE INDIVIDUAL IN THIS INDUSTRY? CV: My husband, Claude Vaughn. He is the reason I fell in love with the fowl.

MD: WHAT’S YOUR THOUGHT ABOUT THIS JEALOUSY ROAMING AROUND SOCIAL MEDIA? CV: Most jealousy stems from those who don’t go and compete themselves. We are lucky and have farms in Mexico and the Philippines who show our bloodlines, and whether we win or lose, we are always happy when we see our friends or people we know do well. That’s how everyone should be.

INTERVIEW | CRYSTAL VAUGHN
“I never dreamed of becoming a chicken lady, but here I am, fascinated!”
n Breathtaking view over Little Creek
MD: WHAT BEDDING DO YOU PREFER FOR YOUR FOWL AS A DAILY SCRATCH? CV: Horse manure or corn shucks MD: WHERE DO MOST OF YOUR FOWL GO EACH SEASON? CV: We ship brood fowl worldwide. But the majority are sold to breeders in Mexico, or here in the states. MD: GAMECOCK HAS ITS BEAUTY IN TERMS OF THEIR COLOURS AND STANDS, HOW CRYSTAL VAUGHN MAINTAINS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FOWL? CV: When it comes to station and body structure, we breed for well-balanced fowl who also have good station and height. Heavy plumage, big tails, and tiny heads are always a plus and considered by us to be traits of fine bred fowl.
https://purebredwarrior.com
MD: WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO THOSE WHO ARE JUST STARTING BREEDING CHICKEN? CV: Invest in quality facilities first then spend money on quality fowl.
MD: DOES THIS NEW DIGITAL MAGAZINE PUREBRED WARRIOR A HELP FOR YOU AND YOUR FARM? CV: Yes, all forms of media that showcase the hard work and dedication to this sport helps us here at.

JEFFREY RONGCALES OF REDSTRAINS GAMEFARM A PERSON WHO WOULD NOT STOP UNTIL HE GETS WHAT HE WANTS.

OW DID YOU GET INTO THIS SPORT AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INTO THIS INDUSTRY? I started touching rooster since I was only 12 years old. No wonder why because the blood of being sabungero runs through my veins. My grandfather is known to our province as a gaffer and a breeder of “Tagalog” roosters. He had raised a rooster that had won 22 times. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE FUTURE OF THE SABONG INDUSTRY? Well, with this pandemic around nobody can tell what will happen to our beloved game and past time soon. But hopefully, when this pandemic ceases we will go back to action. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU MOST ADMIRE IN THIS GAMEFOWL INDUSTRY? I admire those who breed and arrive at specific, unique and great bloodline. Maybe that’s the reason why I love more breeding than fighting a rooster.
64 PUREBRED WARRIOR VOLUME 2 - ISSUE NO.9
CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT IS BEING GENTLEMAN INTO THIS SPORTS OF GAMEFOWL? Gentlemen for me is doing the right thing and being fair to everybody. So in this industry, I will consider you as a gentleman if you are honest especially if you tend to sell/ share your fowl. BEING A BREEDER, HOW CAN YOU ABLE TO HELP THIS INDUSTRY? To breed, arrive and be known with a unique type of rooster bloodline. With this, others will be inspired to breed as well and thereby growing this industry. And of course, by being honest all the time. WHAT BLOODLINE DO YOU RAISE AND HOW YOU KEEP THEM OVER THE YEARS? Black. It’s an on and off breeding. I started being serious with this type of bloodline just 6 years ago. I’m getting it to improve year by year by acquiring good traits of black from great breeders such as Jerry Douglass, Jerry Lawrence, Doyle Watson and our very own Rey Bajenting.

WHAT EVENTS GAVE YOU CONFIDENCE IN BREEDING GAMEFOWLS? Local Events.
DOES THIS NEW DIGITAL MAGAZINE PUREBRED WARRIOR HELP OUR SPRAWLING INDUSTRY? Definitely! Every tiny bit of information that can be acquired through online is very critical to learners like me. How much more if that information is compressed inside a magazine such as Purebred Warrior.
