reeding of fighting cocks today is one of the ways to become healthy and to earn money. You can sell a battle cock, a b3rood cock, and brood hen. But one thing that is good in breeding of fighting cocks is that you can be a healthy one. How you become healthy if you are a breeder? Let me share with you my experiences, I am a 40 year old men, a backyard breeder of fighting cocks. I have a small farm, a one hectare farm of land with some fruit tress that is planted in the area. I have forty fighting cocks in the yard and I have also more or less one hundred hens. I wake up early in the morning at around 5 am, and

then drink four to five glasses of water after that I walk around my small farm to watch my chickens. At around 6 am I feed them. After that I clean the surroundings by getting some of the dry leaves and other objects. Since I have more or less one hundred hens, every morning I collected their eggs and keep it in the storage. Being a breeder of gamefowl makes me become healthy because every morning I can exercises my body, by doing some activities like walking around the farm, feeding them, cleaning the surroundings and other related activities. Another thing is that, I have lots of vegetables planted in my farm like tomatoes, okra, string beans,

malungay, tugabang, and bell pepper. You become healthy by eating vegetables regularly and what is good is that you do not need to buy it, instead, you can sell it to your neighbor or to the market. While enjoying breeding of fighting cocks, it also helps me to become healthy and to earn extra money.
What I am doing is that, during the time that is not a breeding season; I keep all my hens in the fence and feed them a laying mass so that they will lay eggs. I have one hundred hens, and it produce an average 80 eggs per day, in one week I have 560 eggs and I sell it at 5 pesos, in one week I can earn 2,800 pesos. In breeding of fighting cocks you can be a healthy person and at the same time you can earn extra money.

PRODUCING BATTLE COCKS
T
he aim of every fighting cocks breeder is to produce a superior battle cock. The reason we cross strains is to strengthen weaknesses, and elevate strengths. One of the most successful formulas for breeding fighting cocks is by breeding a power cock over a speed hen. The result is usually well balanced battle cocks that possess all the traits we look for in fighting cocks. Some guidelines in order to produce superior battle cocks are the following: Dark Legs over Light Legs, Round bodies over Long bodies,

Dark colors over light (and visa-versa), aggressive cocks over Smart fighting hens, Small cocks over large hens (and visa-versa), and Old cocks over pullets, Old hens over stags. Cross breeding is a breeding system that is applicable in this system in order to produce a superior battle cock. Cross breeding usually improves the average performance of the first generation as in out breeding, and many aces are thus produced. However, generally, the breeding value of the offspring is greatly reduced. A simple definition for crossbreeding is the crossing of two unrelated closely inbred lines. Roundhead fowl crossed on the Hatch fowl of would be good example. Gamefowl breeding is one of the most challenging tasks because you need to do some trial and error in order to achieve your goal. You need more time, money, and effort and do some research to produce good battle crosses. And besides, today there are many good breeders that produced better or best gamefowl that is very hard to defeat in the major derbies like world slasher cup and candelaria derby.

mistakes is a great teacher I’m still reaching out to my friends and customers to make sure that everything is going the way I want it for them with the breeds that they get for me. I have never been satisfied with what I got, and I will continuously be moving forward. Mhar Delaben: WHO IS BOBBY FAIRCHILD AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? Bobby Fairchild: Well, first of all, I am a man who loves what I do. I never dreamed of not being recognized around the world. As a breeder, I’m trying hard to pay attention to detail and never get stuck in the present. I’m always looking forward and trying to improve what I’ve got. I’m still reaching out to my friends and customers to make sure that
everything is going the way I want it for them with the breeds that they get for me. I have never been satisfied with what I got, and I will continuously be moving forward. Mhar Delaben: WHAT DISTINGUISHES A BOBBY FAIRCHILD FROM THE REST? Bobby Fairchild: In my opinion, what distinguishes these little feathered warriors and me from most of the rest is that we never stop trying, we never give up.
24 PUREBRED WARRIOR VOLUME 2 - ISSUE NO.7
Mhar Delaben: WHAT COULD BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR COCKING CAREER? Bobby Fairchild: I have been asked this in many interviews, and one day there may be something that comes along the steps, out above the main championship event at Sunset Recreation Club Paris in 2003. We had the main championship where we fought 2-eight team brackets. Like a softball or basketball tournament or single elimination tournament

of any kind, we challenged these Main Five Cocks every month at Sunset Recreation Club Paris, and we were the overall winner. We are advancing to the next round every month. Mr Jumper and Kerry Robberson won on their separate brackets. All of us has advanced to the championship round where we fought seven cocks. I had much respect for Kerry Robberson,
Mhar Delaben: CAN YOU TELL US A BRIEF STORY OF HOW YOU STARTED BREEDING GAMEFOWLS AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THIS PATH? Bobby Fairchild: Well, I’ve been involved in genetic breeding of competition animals most all of my life. Growing up as a little boy, my father was a breeder of hound dogs for hunting and various competitive types of equine horses. He was always my greatest hero. I found out that when I was born, he was involved in breeding and competing with game fowls. I participated in pleasure hunting with some of our mutual friends from Cherokee County Oklahoma, where we lived in a little community known as Clear Creek. I was given the privilege to go hunting with Gary Gilliam along with his friends and cousins and get to hear the stories from him about these gamecocks. After meeting him, it just built a fire inside me. It affected a
part of my life’s activities. It seems like I could not think of anything else than the game fowls. So, my father started gathering up a few game fowls here and there, and it all started there. My other friend James Sowers worked on the road a lot, and he would get breeding materials from well-known cockers. James would let us have the offspring for near nothing because he was on the road all the time unable to attend to them and would even

People flew in from all over the world to watch this event. Carrie and I had some long hard fights, but in the end, I was victorious with a score of 4 to 3. That is the only tournament that I have ever participated in, and it was very prestigious and memorable not just only for me but also to Mr Jumper.

his input, they would have never excelled the way they did in the beginning. Mhar Delaben: CAN YOU NAME A FAMOUS BREEDER WHO WAS THERE WHEN YOU WERE STARTING A BREEDING CAREER? Bobby Fairchild: I’ve already mentioned him once and feel honoured to be able to say him again, but in Eastern Oklahoma where I’m from, everybody that I know has either receive gamefowl or some piece of advice from the legendary Gary Gilliam, I am proud to call this man my friend
sometimes let us have what he got from the breeders. That’s the way it all got started. Mhar Delaben: WHAT PRINCIPLES DO YOU PRACTICE THAT MADE YOU A LEGENDARY BREEDER? Bobby Fairchild: I assure you that I do not think of myself as a legendary one. I am grateful for the respect and the honour that the people from the Philippines, Mexico and across the other parts of the world give to me, but I’m a legend. The only thing I do is get up every day and work hard at achieving the goals that I have set. I have set these goals and fought for them with hard perseverance. My friends, family and God made these things possible.
Mhar Delaben: WHAT COULD BE THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF YOUR LIFE AS A BREEDER? Bobby Fairchild: Without a doubt, the highlight was when I was a very young man myself, Paul Sparks, Randy Jackson and even Mark Seabolt all stumbling around as young men, but this family of what has proved to be a remarkable Grey Family of Gamefowl. The family that we all put together is the one that I used to make, it is known today as the Fairchild Grey. In the hands of our customers, they have been winners of almost every major fight in the world. Nobody care on these except for Paul Sparks did until he decided to no longer be a burrito, I miss Paul and his dedication as a friend and to the sport. Without

Mhar Delaben: WHAT EVENTS GAVE YOU CONFIDENCE IN BREEDING GAME FOWLS? Bobby Fairchild: Well, you ask what events gave me confidence as a breeder. I will tell you the truth. My confidence is not unshakable one, I don’t believe that it was really necessary. Any event that gave me the confidence when I was relatively young I got to spend much time with my good friend Dink Fair and a little later on, with Johnny Jumper. They shared some breeding techniques with me that made much sense to me, and the longer I practise these techniques, the more confidence that I got. Yes, I do believe that if there is such a thing, I am a professional gamefowl breeder. But this confidence has to be reassured over and over, with close attention to details.

INTERVIEW | BOBBY FAIRCHILD
Mhar Delaben: WHAT KEEPS THE FAIRCHILD GREYS VIGOROUS AND COMPETITIVE? Bobby Fairchild: Well, they are a good solid family we keep one family with a few lines. We cull hard and remove lines if they get weak and always looking to improve them. Mhar Delaben: WHAT LINES CROSS BEST WITH YOUR GREYS? Bobby Fairchild: Well, I’ve never seen them hurt any family. Whatever you got I believe these greys will improve them. They have been crossed on hatch radios roundhead sand even my brown reds. They are also very good dukes old lemons. I’ve done very well with them on my kelso and sweaters. Jessery Palmaris crosses them on Jr. Belts Cowan’s with very good results. I started crossing them on Gary Gilliam’s roundheads and they are not hard to breed. Mhar Delaben: THE FAIRCHILD GREYS AND PAUL SPARKS GREYS HAS SOME RESEMBLANCE, ARE THEY RELATED? Bobby Fairchild: As far as my greys and Paul’s being related, yes in the beginning there were four cocks. I got three of them Paul kept one but we went a little deferment directions. I am very proud of these greys and their accomplishments
https://purebredwarrior.com
Mhar Delaben: WHAT IS IT WITH YOUR GREYS THAT MAKE IT A SERIOUS COMPETITOR IN THE PHILIPPINES? Bobby Fairchild: One thing about them is that they are very intelligent and theyget the job done. The people who use them in the Philippines find that they always bring a little more competitive edge to the table the most. Mhar Delaben: HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR FARM AND GAME FOWL EFFECTIVELY? Bobby Fairchild: You have to love this craft to be able to do what I do. I don’t have days off like everybody else. I go weeks at a time and never leave the farm. I work pretty much from daylight to dark but I
don’t take it like work. Like when I have to work for somebody else I love this, I love seeing it all come together and when the people show up in the farm looks good and the inventory looks good and everybody is proud to be a part of it and this I cannot do this by myself. Anybody who gives me all the credit for this that I am the boss and I am the TV store as the old commercial service on TV here in the US. I am the boss and the TV store but believe me my wife, my kids my friends who work for me, they have put much effort into making this for what it is today, I have a young man who works for me now named Josh Brock. He is a local here in Kentucky, his commitment to this farm is impeccable when I was in Oklahoma I had a young man

named Colton Fairs that works for me and he was extremely dedicated to our friendship and to the farm They help make a lot of things to happen, especially when we was younger. Making this reputation that we carry on today, my wife Melinda Fairchild My kids Tonya, Randy, Cody and even my baby girl Lacee they all put lots of effort and made lots of sacrifices. This farm is not what I do this farm is who I am, I have no desire to do anything other than this for a living, it is my passion, but for the question is how I do it. I have been blessed and being surrounded by very honest loyal and hardworking team. God bless everyone. Mhar Delaben: YOUR BIRDS ARE SOUGHT AFTER AROUND THE GLOBE, HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE THAT THEY WILL PERFORM AS ADVERTISE? WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN OR EXCEED YOUR STATUS? Bobby Fairchild: Well for
one thing we never take for granted that they are what they would want. Continuously look for different ways to improve the performance of these purebred warriors. Of course we do not nor will we participate in illegal cockfights in the United States. I have never been to an illegal cockfight nor do I intend to, but we keep up with the things that our customers are looking for and we check on the performance to make sure that our friends and customers continue to reap the results that they have always reaped and we stay as close to the solid foundation as we can. Never move away from anything very fast, everything is done in small increments We use our instincts and the knowledge that we have claimed over the years, I believe that we have a very strong set of values and work ethics along with knowledge of what it takes to continue to make these champions. I am very fortunate on these aspects because it was a lot easier

Mhar Delaben: HAVE YOU TRIED COMPETING IN THE PHILIPPINES? Jun “The Attorney” Mendoza is a very distinguished man who speaks plainly. There are many other breeders in the Philippines that I’ve used my bloodlines but I don’t really want to get into their secret weapons.

Mhar Delaben: WHAT ARE THE POINTS YOU CAN SHARE IN SELECTING A MAINSTAY BROODSTAG, BROODCOCK AND HENS? Bobby Fairchild: Well, for the most part, they’re going to have some history of genetics that I’m going to be familiar with. They are going to have the genetic characteristics in which I’m looking for then when we start with confirmation we never look at the whole bird. One time we begin not with the leg or the foot, but we started the toenail and went to the foot in the prop toe itself each toe, individually. We look at the shank and the drumstick to make sure that they align correctly, I like for the breast flow into the drumstick smoothly. I like for the neck to sit in a particular
position and then, of course, we want well as the set to the front not too far in the back, above all else we want performance. I have to be careful because sometimes racing for other people performance kids sit on the back burner because everybody wants a picture. Everybody wants to white streamers; everybody wants long legs. However, very seldom does a customer ever even call and ask about performance, but performance will always be essential. my fans are not going to like my answer. I do not believe in the word pure as the way most of the gamefowl people do. They were all made from something other than a very few strands. Kelso hatch Murphy, all of those, are men’s names, and I raise and breed pure. Bobby Fairchild Breed Fowl when they come with consistent characteristics and reproduced consistent features as well. That’s when I consider, there are other ways of sending blood and test, but I believe those that reproduce winners that’s what we want. If you’re going to leave your line of genetic game fowl of some other man’s name, breed chickens the way they wanted the way they have seen fit, that’s on you. My stand on the present and in future is my utmost respect to our founding fathers in the sport. Still, I believe that if they were here to see how some of us are getting stuck on other people’s names and afraid to breed chickens the way they need to be, I believe they would say what in the world are you doing. I believe with all my heart that I breed chickens the way they did, my poultry has consistent genetic characteristics that make them pure. Pure whatever I want to call them

Mhar Delaben: HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR BIRDS? WHICH METHOD DO YOU PREPARE? Bobby Fairchild: We breed many uncles, Niece’s aunts to nephews and grandparents. We don’t breed father and daughter’s mothers to the son if we breed brothers and sisters we do it in slow moderation with scepticism, but we do like to produce brothers and sisters a time or two. Mhar Delaben: TO OUR READING PATRONS WHO WISH TO START BREEDING, WHAT CAN YOU ADVISE THEM? Bobby Fairchild: Well to those people I would say to sit down and count the cost, it’s not a quick adventure, it’s a lifelong event. Being a breeder with anything in competition in the world you set out to do, you need reputable mentors that are close to you and can genuinely have to be a part of what you got to do. I believe what my old friend Terry Don West said, a PRCA world champion bull rider. He said if you want to be a world champion, you better find some world champions to hang out. If you tell me who your friends are, I’ll let you know who you are. If you want to be a winner don not be too bullheaded be involved with winners. Sometimes it makes us feel more important to hang out with the people that are not so successful. Find a mentor, somebody that has earned
Mhar Delaben: DOES THIS NEW DIGITAL MAGAZINE PUREBRED WARRIOR HELP OUR SPRAWLING INDUSTRY? Bobby Fairchild: Well, it sure can’t hurt. I look forward to seeing the results of this digital magazine. I have friends in the Philippines who I have been associated with for years and have been in the magazine business with some things on television, and I’ve watched it grow from something small to something substantial. I wish the same success for you if you’re a brave warrior magazine. Mhar Delaben: PUREBRED WARRIOR’S ADVOCACY IS TO FEED AND QUENCH THE THIRST OF THE HUNGRY ONE AND AS WE ALLIGNED OUR EFFORTS WITH CONG. SONNY LAGON’S PARTY LIST TO CATER THE POOR, THESE EVENTS ARE WELL DOCUMENTED, WOULD YOU BE KIND TO OFFER HELP AND BE PART OF THIS ADVOCACY IN THE NEAR FUTURE? Bobby Fairchild: Well, I’m not exactly sure what that statement means but I’ve been associated with Sonny Lagon for many years. I have known Sonny to be a good man; if Sonny is involved, then I’m sure that there will be elegance and respect to follow. I want to say thank you to some extraordinary friends in the Philippines such as Jessery Palmaris, Recoy Palmaris, Al Garcia, Jun “The Attorney” Mendoza and Manny Berbano. May God bless the Philippines.

I had always dreamed and told people I’d move down south and do roosters full time. I told myself and everyone else that but I don’t know if I thought it would ever happen.
Mhar Beloved: TELL US ABOUT WHO JASON DANIEL IS AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? Jason Daniel: I’m a guy that has been in love with roosters since as long as I can remember. I do not remember a time when I wasn’t around roosters. I really didn’t get involved too much in the breeding side of the farm until maybe my late teens. I am the type person that if I am gonna do something I literally eat sleep and breathe it. When I really started taking this sport

serious I was mid 20’s that’s about the time that we obtained the Blueface and Yellow leg hatch. It really was the first experience I had with what I call consistent top quality fowl. From that point forward, I used them as the basis for everything I learned about feeding, breeding, care, health. Mhar Beloved: WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY USING THEM AS A BASIS FOR LEARNING? Jason Daniel: Well, what I mean is when we got them, they were way better roosters than I was a feeder or anything else. But once I truly trusted them and knew that if I did my part, they would do there’s then I started to see what causes what in the feeding and breeding department. I had always dreamed and told people I’d move down south and do roosters full time. I told myself and everyone else that but I don’t know if I thought it would ever happen. After a lot of years learning little by little and applying all that I’ve learned in the summer of 2015, an opportunity came that lead me to quit my job. I was at 15 years, making more money than I probably was worth to pursue a dream. The family and I moved to Alabama with the only thing for sure that I knew where

I wasn’t lazy, and I would do my best to make it work. So far, with God’s blessing, it’s been 4 years now and still going pretty well. I am no different than anyone reading this article except now I have a more massive feed bill. I try to stick with the philosophy I had years ago, and that raises what I like and not sway from that. I’m almost 40 years old, and every day I learn that I don’t know much about these magnificent creatures. This is a rough sport, but if you enjoy the process, it is always worth it. Mhar Beloved: CAN YOU TELL US A FEW THINGS YOU HAVE LEARNED OR WERE TAUGHT THAT MADE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT? Jason Daniel: Some philosophies I believe truly in my heart about breeding. Things my dad took a lifetime to learn, and he presses in me from day 1. There are producers and products in breeding and what that means is there are families and individuals that produce producers. Not just once in a while find a brood cock or hen or a wild nick but families that will consistently year after year create what you expect them to and more. They have been kept genetically where they can produce better than themselves. When you breed families like that together you usually get a product, he’s everything you want in a rooster but unable to create himself consistently. I’m
https://purebredwarrior.com
sure there’s a more technical way to explain it, but that’s what I genuinely believe. Mhar Beloved: WHAT STANDS YOU OUT FROM THE REST AND HOW YOU MANAGED TO MAINTAIN IT? Jason Daniel: I have a few traits that I believe have helped me do relatively well in this sport, and the first one being I am hardheaded and persistent. I hate losing worse than anyone in the world. So I do everything daily to help my chances to be successful in the end. Hard work puts you in a place where luck can find you. I don’t concentrate on any one big
goal I just try to do better every day at the small things and the big ones will fall in place. My second trait is for the organization, and it reminds me of a quote I believe Henry Wortham put in a book one time. He said that he could go to a man’s yard and tell if he could whip him a main. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I like for things to be a certain way and things done in a particular manner. To

me, it helps save time, money, and enable me to make sure all words are done on a system. When you have an order, it’s easier to do a better job at something with minimal effort. Allowing time to get more done in a day. Mhar Beloved: WHO WAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE THAT INSPIRES YOU? Jason Daniel: That’s an easy question. My father is one that truly put this fever in me. He indeed didn’t do anything else my whole life except go to work and roosters for as long as I could remember. Mhar Beloved: CAN YOU NAME SOME BREEDER THAT YOU GENUINELY CONSIDERED AS A GOOD ROOSTERMAN FRIEND? Jason Daniel: I am blessed to know and indeed have made friends with 1000’s of people in this sport. I have learned so much from so many people, and I’m sure they got tired of me calling and asking? On so many things when I first started this farm. I hate to even name any names to cause God to forbid I forgot someone that I shouldn’t. But the first few people that took the time to help me and answer all kinds of questions were Tammy Marco and Jeremy Chandler. They were both instrumental in showing me
things in raising healthy chickens that helped me more than they know. Claude Vaughn helped me during the transition, and we are still friends today. Since I’ve been here now, I have more friends that are great guys in this sport than I can put in one post. Mhar Beloved: TELL US THE HISTORY OF THAT BLUE FACE GATOR AND YOUR YLH THAT YOU HAVE AND HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THAT GATOR NAME? Jason Daniel: I’ll first explain where the name Gator came from. When I was just a baby, I mean like eating in a high chair age. A man named Bill Greene from Florida that my dad was friends with was visiting from what I was told that they were all eating dinner, and my Mom was feeding me. Bill says to my Mom that boy “He eats like a Gator” ever since then my dad called me it and pretty much everyone else that knows me it’s what I’m known by. When I started going to Mexico, I just put it as a trying name, and it stuck. The Blueface and YLH we acquired in 2004 or 2005 from an older gentleman in Alabama. He basically told us if we couldn’t win with them to take up golf. They are the main reason that I get to do what I dreamt of my

whole life. Year in year out they have been good to us. My main goal is to keep them and try to slowly improve them to keep them pertinent in today’s competition. I believe in the power of selection in maintaining families, and I try to use that to really make these 2 families mine. What I mean is their traits and style is what I have been trying to tweak slowly over the past 15 years. I’m really proud of what they are and what they bring to the table. I hope that in 15 years I can still say the same.

Mhar Beloved: WHAT ARE THE EVERYDAY STRUGGLES YOU FACE IN YOUR FARM, AND HOW YOU MANAGE TO RESOLVE IT? Jason Daniel: The biggest struggle of running a more massive farm is to be proactive on things. Proper worming, vaccination, and general health. If you start letting the small stuff slide because let’s say it’s too much to do, then it will catch up to you in a big way. I have learned to just focus on daily regimens and small things and just let others fall in place. We try to do the right things every day and not cut corners in any way. Mhar Beloved: COMPREHENSIVELY, TELL US HOW YOU REGISTER OR RECORD YOUR FOWLS STARTING FROM CHOOSING YOUR BASE MATERIAL UNTIL THE MARKING DAYS? Jason Daniel: How I do it here is anything that I breed has a leg band and wing band. I have a complete list of every one of them in the safe and in the computer. It will tell the year born, mother, father, toe punch, amongst other things. After I have set my brood pens up, I go through and record precisely what wingbacks are in every pen. That way, I can tell specific hens that were in certain pens. From there, I designate every pen a toe punch. For instance, Pen 12 is Both rights no nose then when I’m marking babies as they are coming out the hatcher all I do is look at the list and pen number and label accordingly. Every year that’s how I do it. So let’s say for instance I have a hen that’s wing band 242 I’ll look her up in the registry, and it will say 2016 BR then I know that she is both rights from 2016 and there are no mistakes on what year. I use leg bands as a secondary form of ID because I’ve had hens lose leg and wing bands over the years and I don’t want any mistakes.
https://purebredwarrior.com
Mhar Beloved: HOW BIG IS THE FARM AND HOW MANY HANDLERS/EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE? Jason Daniel: The farm now is relatively large we hatched 4700 babies last year. We try to pen about 1500 quality stags out of that. There are 4 of us that work

the farm and keep it going daily. And I have a 5th guy that I use to do all my projects such as building pens or anything else construction wise that we need to do. Mhar Beloved: WHAT ARE YOUR BEST PERFORMING BLOODLINES, AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE EACH OF THEIR ABILITY? Jason Daniel: Blueface and the Yellow leg hatch are my base families. They perform so much alike in their styles that I’ll save time and put them together. They are not what most people think of when they hear the word hatch. My families will break with ease and aggression in the break but once on the ground, they will not swap licks with you. They will move and hit you from angles that put them in the advantage, allowing them not to get hurt too and doing what they usually do. Both families hit under the wings with extreme accuracy. Kelso is a more aggressive type fowl and puts more on you than most can handle. They throw a ton of licks and in close or at arm’s length are dangerous. They have the God-given ability to find a way to come home, which to me is most important. Greys are head

Jason Daniel: Obviously, the ARA

that is attacking us every day is the biggest concern. They are trying to destroy something they have no idea about. They are attacking culture and sport that has been around forever. They are starting in Mexico to take away the right to fight roosters and will not stop there. Mhar Beloved: WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AND DISAPPOINTMENT AS A GAMEFOWL BREEDER? Jason Daniel: My greatest accomplishment so far as a breeder is taking bloodlines that were great and tweak them to my style. Seeing them win in so many different peoples hands. The power of genetics is incredible to see. When someone crosses them with the other, you’ll know what I’m looking for the breed that comes out of that. To me, that is my biggest accomplishment to have strains that can be successful in so many hands. I can’t think of any disappointments cause everything is a learning experience. Learn from it can help you in the future. I don’t dwell on bad things, just learn and move on. Mhar Beloved: THE 4TH ANNUAL GATOR BBQ WAS A MASSIVE SUCCESS RECENTLY. WHAT IS THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THESE EVENTS,
https://purebredwarrior.com
AND HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS CONCEPT? Jason Daniel: The BBQ this year was a great event despite being cold and rainy we had over 1400 people show up had one heck of a good time. The BBQ started in 2015 as a close group of friends that came over to visit right after I moved here. The first year I believe there were maybe 15 or 20 people in my living room. The 2nd year we had around 100 people show up and just had a great time. Last year I hired a band and kind of stepped up the event. We had about 400 people, and it went great. Now it’s an event that people know that when they come, they will be welcome with open arms. I genuinely try to make everyone feel welcome and part of the family. The event has become more than just a date on the calendar. Still, now it’s when people plan on seeing old friends they don’t get to see and meet people they only know from social media. It’s a place where all races and cultures and ages come together over one thing, and that is friendship and mutual love of gamefowl.
Mhar Beloved: WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THOSE JUST STARTING A BREEDING PROGRAM? Jason Daniel: It’s straightforward, breed what makes you happy, don not chase names and find what you like and what works for you and stick with it. Mhar Beloved: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS PUREBRED WARRIOR DIGITAL MAGAZINE AND YOUR FINAL MESSAGE TO OUR READERS? Jason Daniel: I think it’s an excellent publication. Your passion as a gamefowl enthusiast shows in what you write, and I’m proud to be a part of it. I’d love to thank everyone that’s been a part of getting to where I am and if I can help anyone just shoot me a message and I’ll do my best to help if I can. Mhar Beloved: ON BEHALF OF OUR TEAM PUREBRED WARRIOR, WOULD YOU BE KIND TO DONATE SOMETHING FOR OUR BREEDER’S HEART PROGRAM? WHERE WE GIVE BACK TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE MOST MARGINALIZED AND LESS FORTUNATE? Jason Daniel: I’ll do my best to help if I can just get with me and we will definitely make something happen. A man never looks as strong as when he bends over to help someone in need.

A care that never quits To become a feeder, it has taken me a lifetime, and I am still learning, I have been blessed to learn from men who were the best or have become the best when nobody else was willing to help me and my best friend back then.
Mhar Delaben: WHO IS TERRY SHAW AS A BREEDER, AND A RENOWNED HANDLER CONDITIONER? Terry Shaw: Well, I don’t do any handling anymore. In the past, I work for Mr Bates myself as a handler and a lot of others too. There are only two guys for me that stand out when it comes to handling, Dale Osborne aka ‘Hillbilly’ and Todd Lux, they taught me a lot of stuff. They were always in my corner, coaching me when they are around. Don’t get

and he has helped me. Back then, it was a struggle for me to get someone to teach how to feed roosters while nobody was willing to do it. It was tough to get good fowl that nobody turned it lose, and when they did, you better hang on to it. It wasn’t like it is today anymore. Then, I moved to Mississippi, where I get a chance to meet Mr Bates at the local feed store. I didn’t know who he was at the time. I ended up moving
onto his partner’s farm Bob Lewis and worked for them until Bob had a heart attack. At that time, I moved back to Kentucky, Missouri, where I am from that didn’t last long. I was lucky enough to move in Oklahoma just a few miles away from where Gary Gilliam lived. I listened to every word he said and took it seriously, I hooked up with Steve Fairchild and the Caviness brothers Mike and Steve got to know Bobby. I truly learned from them how to point effectively. I learned from others along the way, still learning best way is to keep mouth shut and ears open. But I took something from everyone and made how I feed today. Luke Jarrard has helped me a lot too. He has kept me up to date on all the new methods of today’s times. I have tried to pass it on to other

people I know, and it worked. But I, by no means can say I am the best like old Hillbilly that had to make it all count but was not blessed with money. I learned breeding from a lot of great people and also by trial and error. It takes good families, and a lot of times it is something that cannot be rushed when done right. I have been blessed to know some of the people I do, some of my best were gifts and what I couldn’t get were what my partners got. They are responsible for our Hatch Greys and McLeans. We seem to get it right, and I have a special thanks to Luke Jarrard, who opened my eyes about breeding and to know of the 60-sec Kelsos. He has been a big help from brood pens to meds. Good fowl with good health is very important, you need to take it slow, do not get overwhelmed. Take it easy and work your way up and try and have your pens before you hatch.

Like I said back then not a lot of people will help you. We’ve been going around Vern Clayborn and Dale Osborne a lot of the older guys back then, and still, they wouldn’t give you their secrets, so we did that for a while later try to learn more on our own. It didn’t work out so well, so it was a big plus for me when Dale Osborne took me under his wing. He taught me
to it all is to get them empty and hold them. If I cannot accomplish that he said, it will just be an everyday thing. So you have to get your rooster empty to get them sharp. Then you got to be able to hold them and become like the great feeders too.
quite a bit most of everything that I’ve known. When I went to Mr Bates, I learn a lot from the greats like Johnny Jumper, Johnny Moore, Bullock Scotty, Taylor De Cox, Ow Lanier, Oscar Akins, Gary Richardson, Kerry Lane and Carrol Charlie Ibele. I met a lot more, and I cannot name them all. Then I went to Oklahoma where I had the opportunity to hang around Gary Gillam and Brady and took all information I could. I hung out with his yard guy Freddie, went with him on Friday to help with Gary. Then after a year I got in with Steve Fairchild and Mike Caviness, I got all pointers from the Oklahoma guys When I was with Mr Bates there’s a man that came by that was a feeder and handler for Sue Wilson, he told me that the key

He got us six (6) different breeds of a rooster. He told us to put them in the backyard and not to take them to a pit. So we went and got backyard hacks. Dale Osborne was there, and he told us that Tongenoxia was same night and that we should show them there. While we took the roosters he handled them for us butVerns partner showed up and thought we stole them. The other guys covered for us, so we won, took five homes well. We were not that smart, we took them back in two weeks and won again. It was a once in a lifetime experience I will always remember that. CARBO-LOADING HAS SEEN PUNDITS FROM THE BASIC PRINCIPLE THAT DRAWING ENERGY FROM THE LIVER WHERE MUCH ENERGY IS SAVED WILL TAKES TIME FOR THE BODY TO DRAW AND THE FIGHT NOWADAYS DOESN’T LAST MORE THAN 2 MINUTES.” ITS HEYDAYS WHEN LEGAL WHERE WAS THE BIGGEST AND BEST PLACE YOU EVER COMPETED AT? Terry Shaw: The place I got to go to was Mid America, it was by far the most prominent and most beautiful houses with fly pens. Everything you needed all the big names had one, and it was a fantastic place. I got to meet a lot of big-name rooster men there. I even got to show in the same world championship that Billy Bingham won. It was a great place, I never went to Sunset or Cooper State.

Mhar Delaben: IN YOUR POINT OF VIEW WHICH STYLE OF FIGHTING DO YOU PREFER THE LONG KNIFE OR THE SHORT KNIFE? Terry Shaw: aI prefer gaff, but it’s what I have done most of my life. In my opinion, it is hard to compete if you do not have a very good game roosters. But there are roosters for all three, it’s your job to figure what you prefer and which bloodlines are the best for each weapon anything less, and you won’t be very competitive. Mhar Delaben: AS A MAN WHO KNOWS HOW TO CONDITION BIRDS WOULD YOU SHARE TO US HOW YOU WORK ON SWEATERS AS MOST OF THE BREEDERS NOWADAYS DO HAVE ONE? Terry Shaw: I do not have sweaters one reason being is that I use to show in the gaff. But I do have friends that breed yellow leg hatch or good Kelso too to give them more of what they thought they needed. I know guys do well
with them, but I consider them more of knife type bird. Once again, it comes to what a man prefers were all different. They also cross good greys too. Do supplements really contribute to the birds winning chances? In my opinion, the birds are penned up, or on cords, they can’t get out and find their own, so I do give them vitamins and minerals. I use red cell bulldozer and different supplements, apple cider vinegar, vitamin B and multivitamins. If someone asks questions, I will tell them how I give the birds supplements.

WHEN YOU START REDUCING FEED TO THE POINT OF GETTING THE ROOSTER GUT EMPTY WITH THE PROPER MOISTURE IN ITS BODY TO ALBE HIM TO BECOME SHARP AND AT THE BEST POINT IN HIS LIFE PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.” Mhar Delaben: WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH STEROIDS? HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND USING IT? Terry Shaw: I have used steroids for the birds, but generally, if a bird was breeding right, I don’t think it is necessary. If I have a little skinny rooster or have been sick before or if I was showing stags into cocks, but otherwise my birds don’t need it I start the third week out 1 /10 of cc in the breast, do it again next week.
THERE ARE SO MANY KNOWN WAYS TO PREPARE BIRDS; CAN YOU SHARE TO US THE SECRETS ON HOW YOU HELP YOUR BIRDS GET TO THEIR PEAK POTENTIAL? Terry Shaw: The main thing guys do is kill them with a spoon, I mean overfeeding them. At the end of the day trying to think of one thing you can do for them, why not just give them the whole thing. You have to follow the program you have learned. Do not teach these creatures bad habit like hand sparring, the best example of that is “ducking.”
worst thing I see guys do is overfeed the roosters. A rooster cannot get sharp if it has feed and fats in it. Pointing is a three-day process where you control feeding, their moisture, carbs and everything you do is for a reason.
Mhar Delaben: POINTING IS ALWAYS ARGUABLE AMONGST HANDLERS AND CONDITIONERS WHO PRACTICES THEIR OWN BELIEFS OR PATTERN IT FROM OTHERS. WHAT IS POINTING IN YOUR OWN DEFINITION, HOW DO YOU DO IT, AND WHAT ARE THE DOS AND DON’TS? Terry Shaw: Well, I don’t know the fancy term for it, but it is when you start reducing feed to the point of getting the rooster gut empty with the proper moisture in the body to become sharp, physically and mentally fit. The
Mhar Delaben: HOW DO YOU CONTROL MOISTURE DURING THE FIGHT? WHAT IS THE CONTINGENCY WHEN WE OVERDO MOISTURE CONTROL? WHAT ARE THE CUES TO SEE WHEN THE BIRD IS ABOUT TO DRY UP? Terry Shaw: In my opinion, you cannot control moisture when it is started. If the bird gets too much moisture, it cannot get sharp. It quickly

rattles, and they understand what we call leady. It cannot perform its own potential. You can tell that the bird is drying out when it starts popping its head. Carbo-loading has seen pundits from the basic principle that drawing energy from the liver where much energy is saved will take time for the body to bring and the fight nowadays doesn’t last more than 2 minutes. Mhar Delaben: THE PHILIPPINE COMPETITION HAS BECOME THE CENTREPIECE OF THE GAMEFOWL INDUSTRY BACK BY LOCAL POLITICIANS ALIKE. WHAT CAN OTHER GAMEFOWL PRACTISING NATIONS LEARN FROM THIS IN YOUR OPINION? Terry Shaw: It’s all about unity. If we cannot get together and stick together and do this as one big group, we will never open their eyes. One of the problems I have seen in the past is that no one wants to be known. Well, we have to come out of hiding and take it head-on win, lose or draw. Sitting idle on our hands talking about it will never get us anywhere. We have to have numbers and be seen, let them know we’re not going away. Get to know your politicians and make them understand the game. The Puerto Ricans have shown it’s a perfect example of how we should approach our problem.
https://purebredwarrior.com
Mhar Delaben: WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE FOR UP AND COMING HANDLERS AND CONDITIONERS? Terry Shaw: My advice is to get a mentor, one that you can trust and that you know is winning. Take your time when buying broodstock, best money spent is in the brood pen don’t run too big names and don’t get caught up on buying fowl because it has a famous guy’s name on it. Go watch the guys and let them see what you want, and then approach the person, talk to them get to know them. Get in with the right people, there are a lot of good honest guys, but there are also just as many crooks out there. Mhar Delaben: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM TERRY SHAW? Terry Shaw: I’ve been fighting cancer since 2009, and I was given six months to live. I never gave up, and I’ve been in the hospice twice. I tried to be as game as my roosters, so I don’t work, and too far ahead. I’m trying to figure it out. However, I’m hoping to have a few more years. I got a great partnership with Malchow if it wasn’t for him, I’m definitely done by now. Still, he had been allowed me to keep going as he has been a big part of my life. They kept me having to take care of them no matter how sick and tired I get, still have to be taken care of. So, I try to be as game as them from here I will take one day
at a time. I will always be a part of this big family, even when I can go no more. I will have each and every one of you in my heart, by the grace of God, I am still here and still have my family and gamefowl. I wouldn’t change a thing if I had to do it over again. Some of the best people I ever met was through my gamefowl. Mhar Delaben: DOES THIS NEW DIGITAL MAGAZINE PUREBRED WARRIOR A HELP FOR YOU? Terry Shaw: I think it’s excellent as it reaches the whole world with very informative information. It puts a lot of us together; otherwise, we would have never met. The guys who run the magazine were excellent. I just wish they were around when I was younger. To all the young guys involved in this magazine, you must take advantage of everything the magazine has to offer. Bring whatever you can and work for it, and remember to keep them crowing.

do it the master’s way I remember losing the very first bird I conditioned at a very young age. It hurt so I strived to be better and learn as much as I can to improve and be consistent at winning. Neroe Lee: WHO IS RYAN ABRENICA IN THE PHILIPPINE GAMEFOWL INDUSTRY? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I am first and foremost known as a family first man who fights hard at the pits. I wanted to be remembered as an educator who helped bring equality to our sport by helping the small-time cockers compete equally with big timers. Neroe Lee: TELL US A BRIEF STORY OF HOW YOU BECAME AN ENTHUSIAST AND
EVENTUALLY A BREEDER? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Most of my family from San Pablo are cockers from my grandfather, to my father, uncles and cousins. Cockfighting is in our blood. I was conditioning birds from my family since grade 6. Neroe Lee: ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS YOU CAN RECALL WHEN YOU WERE STARTING A GAMEFOWL CAREER? It hurt so I strived to be better and learn as much as I can to improve and be consistent at winning. Neroe Lee: WHAT LEAD YOU TO OPEN A COCKING SCHOOL? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I saw that almost all cocking schools here either were sponsored by gamefowl feed and meds companies or has instructors that were not competing well so I took it upon myself to better educate the new generation of

breeders and cockers. You will not learn from schools sponsored by companies because their goal is to sell their products nor learn from teachers that does not compete or do poorly at the pits. Neroe Lee: HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A MARRIAGE
OF SCIENCE AND COMMON PRACTICAL APPLICATION IN YOUR COCKING CURRICULUM? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I learned breeding and conditioning from some of the toughest Americans that competed when it was still legal in the states notably Greg Nance, Bobby Markholt, Redhat Cottam, Eugene Box, Bill Hull, Jay Gentry, Tim Cash and Shannon Buff. Locally my mentors are Atty Jun Mendoza, Eduardo Sioson and Junjun Sy. Aside from that I perhaps have read every cocking literature written on the subject of breeding and conditioning. I came from a family involved in the medical field so science is also involved in our system. Neroe Lee: WOULD YOU GIVE US A PICTURE OF WHAT USUALLY TRANSPIRES IN THE SEMINAR? WHAT CAN WE LEARN AFTER A 3DAY COMPREHENSIVE SESSION? Atty Ryan Abrenica: It is a 2 whole day
8am to 5pm cocking Masterclass. First day tackles bloodlines, breeding, nutrition, disease prevention, rearing and maintenance. The second day focuses on selection, preconditioning, conditioning, pointing and gaffing. It is a comprehensive class that covers everything from shell to the pits. Neroe Lee: YOU ARE WIDELY KNOWN IN THE INDUSTRY AS A “NO NON-SENSE” GUY WHO APPLIES COMMON SENSE IN GAMEFOWL MANAGEMENT, WHAT CAN OUR READERS LEARN FROM THIS GOLD-MINE PRINCIPLES? Atty Ryan Abrenica: You can be very succesful in this sport by making things very simple. Start with the best bloodlines you can get your hands on. Learn to properly raise and maintain them in the best of health and be informed about the basics of conditioning. There are no shortcuts, miracle medicines etc. Good bloodlines plus great health will give you a lot of wins. Neroe Lee: AS A DECORATED BREEDER WHO IS AN OWNER OF A BOTY CROWN AND MENTOR OF A PRESTIGIOUS SCHOOL IS THERE A FEELING OF PRESSURE EVERY TIME YOU PIT BIRDS? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Yes sometimes but I know for the longest time that in this sport you will not win all the time. All you can do is be consistent and win a lot more than you lose. I try to enjoy and learn when I am at the pits, win or lose. Neroe Lee: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION WITH THE WIDELY PRACTICED 21DAY CONDITIONING METHOD? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I believe a 21 day conditioning is worthless if you do not know how to take care

of your chickens all year. A great conditioning system is 365 days. Neroe Lee: HOW DO YOU Neroe Lee: MANAGE YOUR FARM AND GAMEFOWL EFFECTIVELY? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I cull a lot. I do not believe in treating sick fowls. I do all I can to prevent them from getting sick. Prevention is a lot better than cure. The winningest cockers do not hesitate to cull sickly birds and only maintains healthy ones. Neroe Lee: HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE POINTING? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Pointing is the art of putting your gamefowls at their sharpest at the right moment which is that time they enter that pit. Neroe Lee: HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE CARBO LOADING? GIVEN MOST FIGHTS ARE UNDER 2 MINUTES IS THERE
I BELIEVE A 21 DAY CONDITIONING IS WORTHLESS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHICKENS ALL YEAR. A GREAT CONDITIONING SYSTEM IS 365 DAYS. ENOUGH TIME FOR THE BIRDS TO DRAW RESERVE ENERGY FROM THE LIVER? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Carboloading is nothing but the increase of the amount of carbohydrates you give your fowls during the pointing period. It is important but secondary only to having sharp fowls at the pits which includes proper handling of moisture, enforcing rest and of course carboloading itself.

Neroe Lee: WHAT SUPPLEMENTS OR ENHANCERS DO YOU USE DURING THE KEEP? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I only use simple multi vitamins, B Complex injectable and soluble electrolytes. We do not use any supplement that cannot be found in your local agrivet stores. Less is more when it comes to the use of supplements. Never over medicate like some other schools teach. Natural is the way to go.

INTERVIEW | ATTY RYAN ABRENICA
Neroe Lee: WHAT WERE YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES AS A BREEDER/MENTOR? Atty Ryan Abrenica: The biggest challenges for me as a breeder is to continue producing healthier fowls each year. As a mentor, the biggest challenge for me is to convince a student not to focus on the beauty of a bird but on its ability. Neroe Lee: HOW SYSTEMATIC ARE YOU WHEN IT COMES TO RECORDING? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I am very systematic. I keep written records of each marking or mating for the past 15 years plus it has a soft copy computer backup just in case. Neroe Lee: AS A BREEDER WITH UNORTHODOX APPROACH IN BLOODLINE SELECTION WHAT DO YOU THINK MADE SWEATERS VERY EFFECTIVE IN STAG

FIGHTING AND WHY YOU CHOSE TO A PATH IN CREATING YOUR OWN CONCOCTION AND NOT RELYING ON THE SAID BLOODLINE? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I have nothing against Sweaters, they are good fowls but they are not for me. I also like to be original. Nowadays, everybody has the Sweaters. I like taking the road less travelled. Neroe Lee: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION WITH HIGH-STATION BIRDS VS MEDIUM STATIONS? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I like my birds medium station. Not too short or overly tall. In my opinion they kill faster and are more accurate because of their lower center of gravity. Neroe Lee: HOW WILL ATTY RYAN ABRENICA POINT A STAG WHO IS ABOUT TO FIGHT AT AROUND 7PM, (TIME

We feed little on fight day depending on the bloodline, feel of the birds and of course the weather. Neroe Lee: WITH THE ADVENT OF GAMEFOWL COMPANIES TRYING TO INNOVATE AND AT THE SAME TIME MAKE MONEY, ARE ENTHUSIAST AT RISK TO FALL TRAP IN FALSE ADVERTISING CLAIMS OR VERBATIM COMPONENTS? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Yes. The gamefowl industry nowadays is too advertising driven. A beginner has to be very choosy at what he will use as his feed or supplements for his fowls because if there are good ones there are also bad ones that our gamefowls really do not need. Neroe Lee: WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OF A BREEDER? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Already asked at number 14.

Neroe Lee: WHO INFLUENCED YOU TO BECOME A COMPETITIVE INDIVIDUAL IN THIS INDUSTRY? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Actually what motivates me is not a person but the idea to be better each day at what you do. I am naturally a competitive individual who hates losing so I do what I can to win a greater percentage of my fights. Neroe Lee: CAN YOU DISCUSS YOUR PRINCIPLES IN COCKFIGHTING? Atty Ryan Abrenica: My principles in cockfighting are simple, breed fowls that are smart, game and can cut and give them the best health possible. That is the ultimate key to winning. Neroe Lee: WHERE DO MOST OF YOUR FOWL GO EACH SEASON? Atty Ryan Abrenica: I fight my own fowls and enjoy competing so I keep all my battlefowls for my

personal use. As to my purebred fowls, I do share some of them to my regular buyers of broodfowls who wants to add cut and smarts to their bloodlines. Neroe Lee: WITH THE ADVENT OF STAG FIGHTING WHAT TRICK OR TIPS YOU CAN SHARE SO OUR READERS CAN BE ONE STEP AHEAD? Atty Ryan Abrenica: For stag fighting, I choose medium stationed birds with fully open hackles that do not hesitate to hit an opponent. Overly tall roosters with not much fire in them do not have a place in stag fighting. Neroe Lee: WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO THOSE WHO’S JUST STARTING BREEDING GAMEFOWLS? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Do not hurry. Observe who is really winning at the pits and acquire fowls from those. Education is important.
Learn first the basics of breeding, rearing and conditioning. And instead of buying every bloodline you read or heard about, it is better for a beginner to start with only one or two solid bloodlines at the most. Neroe Lee: HOW DO YOU FORESEE YOUR LEGACY A FEW YEARS FROM NOW? Atty Ryan Abrenica: Hopefully, the sabong community remembers me as an educator who has revolutionized this sport by giving beginners a chance to win and compete against the big boys. Neroe Lee: DOES THIS NEW DIGITAL MAGAZINE PUREBRED WARRIOR A HELP FOR YOU? Yes, Purebred Warrior Digital magazine is not only a big help to me but to beginners as well. I wish Purebred Warrior success and longevity. Godbless!

MIND BREEDER
Billy James
THE HALL OF FAMER BY KEITH MAZE
I
f there should ever be a hall of fame for cockers, Billy James will be in the inaugural class. He is to cockers what Hank Williams was to country music, what Babe Ruth was to baseball, and what Michael Jordan was to basketball. Billy spent his adult life working with gamefowl, and was a legend to all who
72 PUREBRED WARRIOR VOLUME 2 - ISSUE NO.7
knew him. To demonstrate his success, he won a total of 584 derbies – the most known to any cocker. Billy liked the Duke Hulsey breed when he started gamefowling back in 1953, but later got into the Pumpkin Hulsey’s. “I’ve had several other breeds over the years,” he told me in an interview from 2018. “But I must say the McClain Hatch breed that I got from Charlie Hudson was winning the most derbies or me.” Even with all his success, Billy had some words of wisdom for cockfighters who think they are going to make a lot of money from the sport. “There’s no money in roosters unless you sell them,” he stated. “I’ve won a lot of derbies and still can’t say I’ve made money at it. But it’s a good sport and these young people in it for the money better get out and get a real job. It’s the love of gamefowl, the thrill of the audience, and friends I’ve made that kept me interested.” Just as in any sport, you have to have the desire to get better to hone your craft. You have to work hard and be willing to learn from your mistakes. One way Billy did that was to hang around other legendary cockers such as Billy Ruble, Curtis Blackwell, Johnny Jumper and others. By watching these master cockers Billy learned what to do and what not to do
with his gamefowl, and in the pit. “Me and Johnny Jumper was good friends,” Billy said. “Johnny needed a few good roosters for the international derby in the Philippines and bought nine from me for a hundred dollars each. The Kelso was the money fight and had 3.9 million dollars bet on it. That rooster really showed out and won the derby money fight. I got my Kelso’s from country music performer Ray Price – who had once bought Jumper out – and that Kelso was one of them.” Billy was a mentor to anyone who needed help in the gamefowl sport, and was particularly enjoyed helping young people. “If they tend to gamefowl they have no time to be getting into bad things out on the road,” he stated. “It also teaches you morals, how to work, and many things required later in life.” One of those Billy mentored was Jay Riddle of Tuscumbia. “He was a great man,” said Jay. “I was an alcoholic when I met Billy. He told me right off the bat if I was going to fight chickens with him that the beer had to go. In a way, he saved me because I quit drinking. “I strived to be more like Billy and his Christian beliefs, and he changed me for the better. He even told some cockers they weren’t right with the Lord and they needed to be because they never knew when their last day would be. “He even let the Jehovah Witness have prayer meetings at his house on Wednesdays. He told me he didn’t believe the way they

do, but he didn’t want to hurt their feelings. Most people would never have let them in the door.” As all cockers learn, you don’t win every fight or derby you enter. “When I first started pitting for Billy, I was terrible at it,” Jay said. “He would always stress to me that you just have to want to get better through hard work. We then won a bunch of derbies and Billy would say, ‘The hard work pays off, don’t it son?’ I heard him tell people that I could get more out of a rooster than anyone he’d ever seen. I felt good on the inside knowing he was proud of me! It was never about the money – for me or him – it was all about seeing the hard work pay off. “When we fought together under Hawkpride, we won cocker of the year six out of seven years. One year we won 50 straight fights without a loss, and I won 55 before I lost. I think we had better roosters than most, but now the competition is much harder. “Billy is being honored at the next Gaff Championship in Mexico in February of 2019, and I am so proud for him. I tried for year to get Billy to go to some of the bigger derbies, but he said we have to support the little pits or we would not anywhere to fight if not for them.” Valarie Sullivan Crump was also a close friend with Billy. “Billy was a friend … a man one could count on.” Valarie said. “He never wavered from his beliefs – was never ashamed of Jesus – or who he was. Billy was an expert in breeding and winning with whatever he put his hands on … even stags! “Anyone who drove onto his farm on Hawkpride Mountain was welcomed in his yard. He loved to show his chicken to you, He had such a gift when it came to gamefowl. I was always amazed at how Billy raised his biddies right there in the brood pens, and never separated them from the cocks. Mr. Billy was the ultimate gentleman cocker, whether at
https://purebredwarrior.com
home or at the barn. “Anyone, especially youngsters, who wanted to get into gamefowl could always count on Mr. Billy. Not only would he gift them a trio of birds to get them started, he also shared his vast knowledge of the sport. “Billy James was my mentor, my confidant, and I loved him like a father. I am proud to have known this legend.” Unfortunately, Billy was killed in an automobile wreck on November 1, 2018, in his hometown of Tuscumbia, Alabama. He still cared for approximately 150 chickens – most of them Pumpkin’s – at the time of his death. “He went to Jack’s every morning to get biscuit and gravy,” Jay Riddle says. “He drove a 1994 Silverado pickup with a very touchy gas pedal. I drove the truck many times and I could never accelerate without it doing a burn out. I’ve always thought to myself that the truck spun on the wet pavement that morning due to that touchy gas pedal and caused him to get hit by the eighteenwheeler.” Billy was buried beside his wife, Louise, at his home church of New Bethel Baptist Church. The gamecock world lost more than a lot of gamefowl knowledge that rainy morning in Tuscumbia. It lost a true gamefowl legend, but more importantly, it lost
a great man. Perhaps it is fitting to end with a statement that Billy said shortly before his untimely death: “I love my chickens, and the hundreds of friends that have helped me enjoy the sport. It is a way of life for me. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

GAMEFOWL VETERINARIANS By : Free Roaming Sorcerer
C
ockfighting has evolved in light year distances compared to archaic knowledge of the golden times. Never will we see old folks blowing cigar smoke to our winged gladiators, except maybe from remote provinces or rural areas. Although superstition is part of the Filipino culture, we are limited nowadays with scale reading and color coding (lucky or dominant feather and leg color of the day) exist in this modern age. Along with the changing times, companies keep up with the innovation never imaginable at the time of our forefathers. Evolution of the modern gamecock is at par with the modern day Licensed Veterinarians. Nowadays we can see Doctors who are not just scientifically savvy in raising gamefowl but are also knowledgeable in most aspects of the game even knife

tying and whatever is possible for the fowls to be at their very best come fight day. In fact there is a group (Philippine Gamefowl Veterinarians) that are representative of different companies but banded together to help each other for the enrichment of the modern day know how of gamefowl care, raising, weaponry and post battle care management. We can expect better practice with these Vets for they have dedicated their time, effort and passionate love for the industry. Some breeders who came in contact and had close association with these Practitioners are expected to excel more on their already existing skills.. We can hope for the industry to grow better and more scientifically inclined in which we believe is the better direction for a more succesful career for anyone who loves the sport.

T
he Breeder’s Heart, Feeding Program 2019 took place recently, and it was undoubtedly a great success for everyone. Moreover, came out more meaningful than of the last year. Purebred Warrior collaborative effort with Ako Bisaya Party List and Lasmedja friends-group made all this plan possible. Fortunately enough, the sun shines very well, so we took advantage of the weather because it’s been raining every single day, and that is why we kept rescheduling our cause. The friend’s group of Lasmedja are incomplete due to some of their prior commitment, still, we managed to gather most of the ‘tri-sikad drayber’ or trike drivers and to our less fortunate companions to serve them with a delicious home-cooked ‘Arroz Caldo’ and giving them packed of goodie bags that contain rice, noodles and canned foods. As they are reaching out for their goodie bags, you’ll see the true beauty of a sincere smile that lies on their faces. From there, my heart pounds for joy while seeing them happy and contented for the day. These moments remind me of my past, of which I thought life is unfair but indeed just. We cannot pursue all of this effort without the help of each individual who arranges and organized everything. They participated in this cause

patiently and voluntarily without asking any in return, and the value of their time is much appreciated.
