PRESIDENT’S REPORT
By Diana Trainor, VIC Pictured Right: Presentations at the recent Victorian Hi Points Awards Day: Tiny Tot Overall Winner, Lachlan Thomas, VIC State Rep, Rob Lester & Diana Trainor.
What an amazing first year we have had with AMHS Inc. Time has certainly flown by too fast and we are quickly approaching our first AGM at the end of November. I am proud to say that I have supported AMHS since the day it was launched as the Vice President. As the President stepped down recently due to personal reasons, I was more than happy to step into the Presidents role to see AMHS grow from strength to strength and continue on as Australia’s most prestigious Miniature Horse Society as I am very passionate about AMHS Inc. I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to all our volunteer Committee Members Australia wide, you are all amazing people who have given up your spare time to help AMHS become the Society it is today and on behalf of all the National Committee, THANK YOU, we really appreciate everything each and every one of you do for our Society. THANK YOU also to all our wonderful Members, week after week we see more and more Members joining AMHS as word quickly spreads of all the benefits of being a Member and the quality that AMHS provides in everything we do. AMHS prides itself on the fact that we really care about what our Members want and think. The number of new Members that are flocking to join AMHS
EDITOR’S REPORT
By Kay Tuohey, VIC Sorry for the delay in this edition of Elite Magazine, just when you think you are catching up, something happens and things get delayed….
It’s hard to believe we are past our first year mark and we are already into our second season (for Vic) and year for AMHS Inc. As this was meant to be the final issue for our first year, you will find a complete coverage of the NSW and VIC Horse of the Year State Championship Shows (woah they were a couple of big shows to cover). Thank you to the photographers who captured some amazing shots throughout the events and congratulations to all the winners, your horses and ponies looked amazing. This issue also contains the Victorian Hi Point Awards Presentations, once again congratulations to all the winners and make sure you check out the extra photos in this issue of Stevie & Meadie, sorry boys I just Page 2

is amazing as they all want to experience the AMHS difference. It is wonderful to see our Golden Buckle Shows planned for nearly every State over coming months, once again another fine example of AMHS thinking outside the box and giving our Members something different. We will be awarding the Gold Buckles to every Grand Champion, good luck to all, I’m sure you will love them as they are beautiful! As always we want to encourage our Members to contact us if you wish to get involved more with AMHS as we still have a number of areas that do not have a full Committee. This is an amazing opportunity for you to get involved with your area and help plan events for your State as you will be involved in all aspects of Committee decisions. Even if you are in an area that has a full Committee (we are always looking for more help) and you would like to get involved please do not be afraid to speak up and contact your Rep. As Victoria was our only State to award Hi Points this year (that will be different for next year as we have NSW, QLD & WA all launching Hi Point Systems as we speak and I look forward to being able to attend these presentations where possible next year), I would like to congratulate all the successful Hi Point Award winners for the season. Thank you for supporting AMHS Events and congratulations on your awards. A HUGE congratulations to all our Overall Honour Roll Award Winners, that was an amazing effort by all and I was honoured to be a part of the Award Presentations along with the new State Representative, Rob Lester. I look forward to our exciting new year to come… Diana Trainor Acting President couldn’t help myself and had to print them…. Thank you to everyone who took part in our Stallions at Stud Feature which will be running over the next two issues, your boys are amazing…. A huge thank you also to everyone who is supporting Elite Magazine by advertising. With other Societies having to cut out magazines & cut back on the quality because of rising costs, we aim to continue bringing you the most prestigious Miniature magazine in print and online as we all agree, there is nothing like sitting back in your chair with a cuppa and enjoying to read an actual hard copy magazine, with glossy pictures and beautiful ads…. For many your magazines are keepsakes and you enjoy getting them out whenever you feel like it and flipping through the pages, looking at the types of horses that are winning in other States, looking to see what Studs are breeding and showing beautiful horses by the stunning ads, for many, it’s just not the same as an online magazine and that is why we will continue to bring you the best of both worlds…. Enjoy the read, talk soon Kay Tuohey Editor HORSE SOCIETY INC.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA REPORT
By Kirsty Bradford, WA The big news in WA is the announcement of the 2012 Orange Australia Golden Buckle Show, which is to be held at the beautiful Brookleigh Equestrian Centre in the Swan Valley on November 4th. Entry forms and programs can be obtained from the AMHS Website or from the AMHS WA Facebook page and follow the links. Even at this early stage, the 2012 Orange Australia Golden Buckle Show has generated great interest in the Miniature world. I am of the understanding that all stables at Brookleigh have already been snapped up and reserved by eager competitors for the event. However don’t despair as there are ample yards available for any who are interested.
Awesome prizes are on offer (I’m lovin’ those buckles!!) with the added benefit of being first in the programming. So come on and pull your boy out of the paddock and give him a make-over so he can attend the most prestigious event of the season (in our humble opinion anyway)! As you are aware AMHS believes the Youth are our future and as such the 2012 Orange Australia Golden Buckle Show reflects this in the programming. There is a strong focus on classes for Youth Handlers and also our Tiny Tots, in both halter and performance. Those Members with young children who have been pestering them as to when is it their turn?””, take advantage of this event and let them have their day! Once again I suggest pullingyour gelding out of the paddock or if you don’t have one then beg, borrow or steal (just kidding about the stealing!) someone else’s. Geldings are fantastic for beginner handlers, tiny tots in particular as they are generally even-tempered and very forgiving – an important trait where kids are involved! (If you haven’t already noticed, yes, I am biased – my two kids have geldings.) On top of all the fun and wonderful prizes there will also be a fancy dress class at the commencement of lunch break for handlers 15 years and under. I can’t wait to see what people come up with for this one!!
WA would like to extend a HUGE and heartfelt THANK-YOU to Orange Australia for coming on board as our Major Sponsor. For those that don’t know Orange Australia was also our Major Sponsor for the Silver Trophy Show back in May, which was a resounding success! It is this type of repeat support that enables us Another exciting aspect of the Show is that it will mark the to host such high calibre events for our Members. launch of our WA Hi-Point competition. This is our way of thanking our members for their support and recognising It must also be mentioned that the support from Orange Australia excellence within AMHS WA. Qualification is easy. You just and our many other Sponsors is largely due to the fact that we have to be a member and attend three Championship Shows. The have such a dedicated and hard working Committee. Two of our trophies that we have for this competition are simply lovely and Members in particular rise above and beyond the call of duty when would be a treasured display in any home for years to come. The it comes to organising these events. Girls, you know who you are competition also caters for our youth and tiny tots, so, parents, and we thank you for being such wonderful ambassadors and now is a good time to upgrade to a family membership if you building a positive rapport with our Sponsors! don’t already have one. Information booklets will be released We also extend the same HUGE THANK-YOU to all of our other shortly via the usual avenues. Sponsors and those who have made donations. Without all of your support, these events just would not be possible and we sincerely hope that you enjoy these events as much as we do! While we have our Major Sponsor we are still seeking sponsorship to ensure the smooth running of this event.
If you are interested in sponsoring a class or own/know a business that may be interested in taking up sponsorship or providing donations please contact our Sponsorship Co-ordinator Emma Dunham (matopbipark@hotmail.com). In a similar vein we are also in need of extra hands on the day to assist with setting up the performance course, packing away, marshalling, canteen and so forth. If anyone can spare some time during the day please contact one of the Committee Members. Your reward will be the opportunity to be part of the force behind such a prestigious event, our undying gratitude and the warm glow of knowing you assisted YOUR society for YOUR benefit!
Please note that entries for this event close on the 5th October. There will be NO LATE ENTRIES OR ENTRIES ON THE DAY. All exhibits are required to be measured - no permanent height records will be accepted. Measuring will commence at 7am sharp! For those of you groaning at the early start, we will have a BBQ brekkie available for purchase. This should get you going and keep you satisfied until lunch time when the barbie will be fired up once again. There will also be cold drinks and snacks available for purchase. The Committee will also be running raffles so be sure to bring your loose change as the prizes are fantastic – as I’m sure the winners from the Silver Trophy Show will attest. Remember that this is an open event. All are welcome, regardless of societal affiliations, so please pass information onto anyone you know who may be interested in attending. Well that’s about it for now! I would just like to once again thank ALL of our sponsors and supporters as well as any who are contemplating donations or sponsorship. I cannot reiterate enough that, without all of you, we. the Committee, could not bring these events to fruition. So THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU!! I look forward to seeing you all at the 2012 Golden Buckle Show! Cheers!
The Orange Australia Golden Buckle Show has an extensive program and there is sure to be an event to suit everyone! As well as halter classes we will also be running performance and harness events. There will be two rings: Miniature Horse/Small Horse and Miniature Pony…..and wait for it…..YES! Foundation Pony. We have changed the programme around a little from the usual format and gelding classes will precede the filly/mare classes. So those of you who have boys at home who haven’t been out in a while, this Kirsty Bradford would be a fantastic opportunity. WA State Representative

QUEENSLAND REPORT
By Michael Bowden, QLD What a pleasure it is to be the AMHS Northern Queensland Representative and I would like to add my welcome to those of you from this region who have recently joined this great Society. It’s good to get around and meet you all at shows in the area. We have just come to the end of the busy Agricultural Show season for this area – starting at the end of April and running most weeks through to the middle of August. I hope everyone is enjoying showing their miniature horses to the public. Quite a few shows in the area are now featuring Miniature Horses in a full program and the reaction from the public has been inspiring.

Our last AMHS show was held in Rockhampton on Saturday, 29th September at the Rockhampton Showground’s with Youth, Miniature Pony and Harness Classes in the morning. In the afternoon, the Miniature Horse and Small Horse Classes were judged and all Performance Classes were in the evening under lights to avoid the heat. You will find photos from this show featured in our next edition of Elite Magazine. In this issue we have some photos from our previous shows which we were waiting on photos to be submitted. On another note, if you would like help to organize a show in your area, please get in touch. Part of our philosophy is to be there for our Members. I have organized some fundraising events at Office Works in Rockhampton over the next few months so if anyone would like to offer an hour or two selling “sausage sandwiches”, you’re most welcome to help. My contact details are on the website. Enjoy your minis

BALIN BRADFORD
Q. How old was Balin when he first started showing? A. Balin commenced showing this year at the age of 4 ½. The Orange Australia Silver Trophy in WA was his first event. Q. How did Balin start in Miniatures? A. Balin has grown up around horses. His Aunty breeds Friesians in Burekup (south-west WA) and he has spent a lot of time interacting with the foals over his short life. Balin’s mum has a Friesian Sporthorse which Balin kept claiming was his and that he was going to ride. At the end of 2011, he moved from Bunbury to Bakers Hill. Mum finally got tired of arguing over ownership of her horse and who was going to do the grooming and feeding etc. This prompted a visit to Wildfire Miniatures and family friends, Anne and Billy Dawson, in April 2012. It ended up with us coming home with Wildfire Peppers Phoenix who was originally to be a shared pony with his big sister, Danica. (Mum wasn’t sure how long the enthusiasm was going to last). However, it soon became clear that Balin was not content to share and was becoming increasingly frustrated at having to wait his turn with the pony as well as wanting to do everything himself. This resulted in another trip to Wildfire Stud in July 2012 and a lovely young gelding for Danica to bring on while Balin gained sole ownership over Phoenix. Q. What is Balin’s favourite horse’s name? A. Phoenix Q. What is Balin’s favourite horse colour? A. Black/brown. (Until fairly recently, he assumed all horses were black as he was only used to seeing the Friesians!) Q. What is Balin’s favourite class at shows? A. Balin has so far only competed in Handler and Best Presented. He enjoyed the Handler Class best, as he got to trot Phoenix on his own.
Q. What is Balin’s favourite showing moment? A. His favourite moment was when he received a “goodie bag” for his Handler Class at the Orange Australia Silver Trophy Show. Phoenix was promptly handed to his sister and Balin found a nice spot on the sidelines and spent the rest of the morning devouring his loot! Q. Does Balin do Performance? A. Balin is looking forward to The Orange Australia Golden Buckle Show in November, where he will compete in his first Performance Class. At the moment, he is content to practice at home over jumps, tarps, through cones and shower curtains etc.
Outline of Achievements: 3rd Child Handler 9yrs and under – Orange Australia Silver Trophy Show Ambitions: To win a trophy and a medallion like his sister!

LILY DUNHAM Q. When did you first start showing? A. I did a couple of shows doing Leading Rein and then started showing miniatures last year. Q. How did you start in miniatures? A. My older sister, Emma, got me into showing them. Q. What is your favourite horse’s name? A. Rosie (Wildfire Irish Rose) Q. What is your favourite horse colour? A. Chestnut Pinto Q. What is your favourite showing moment? A. When I won my first handler class when I was showing Wildfire Dolly Did It. Q. Do you do Performance? A. No I don’t do it just yet, but I would love to learn how and start doing it at shows. Outline of Achievements: 1st Place in the Junior Handler at the CBCHS WA Annual State Show 2011. 2nd Place Junior Handler 11yrs & Under at the 2012 Orange Australia AMHS WA Silver Trophy Show Best showing/handling tip you have been told: Always stand your horse up straight and always move out of the way of the judge when they are trying to look at your horse. NTH NEW SOUTH WALES REPORT
By Christine Cantrill, NSW With Winter coming to an end, we can get stuck back into the NSW AMHS Show Season and Events Calendar. Due to show venues being booked twelve months in advance and having to compete with other breed societies, the task of hosting shows was difficult in our first year. We were able to get around this by sourcing grounds that no one else had thought of, which enabled us to offer a lot more events. By obtaining the use of these facilities AMHS were able, in just a few short months, to offer a Championship Show, NSW Regional Show, Christmas Show, State Show, Lismore Championship Show and an International Halter Preparation and Training Clinic with World Champion, Casey Campbell (USA). As studs were preparing for National Shows from May through to April, we decided to start our Show Season again after Winter. This also allowed us to continue with our fund raising and plan an exciting Events Calendar for the next Show Season
To make it fair to all this Show Season, we will be hosting NSW Shows in as many different areas as we can. AMHS have taken into account the needs of our Members and have sourced grounds that offer good camping faculties, quality stables and indoor arenas where possible. As the comfort and well-being of our horses is of great importance to us, young stock events will be held in the warmer months, not the dead of Winter. We don’t want to give too much away just yet but we can advise that we have the following being organised as we speak for the upcoming Show Season. All our Events will be added on to the official AMHS Website (www.amhs.com.au), Events Calendar Page as we confirm more dates and newlysourced venues, so make sure you keep an eye on our Website and Facebook Page. A taste of what is to come for NSW: Dubbo - Golden Buckle Championship Show over two days, with every Champion receiving one of our stunning Gold Buckles (valued at $90 each). Bathurst - Crystal Trophy Championship Show NSW AMHS HOTY State Show Dubbo -Family camping weekend with full performance program, horse and family adventure treasure hunt and lots more. Keep an eye out for details on this one. Richmond - Regional Championship Show Lismore - Far North Coast Golden Buckle Championship Show Grafton - Twilight Championship Show. In this issue of Elite you will find a complete overview and show coverage from our recent 2012 NSW HOTY State Championship Show along with a special write up from one of our NSW Youth Members, Maddison Morgan about her experience with showing and AMHS. We are looking forward to another very exciting year for AMHS in NSW. If anyone wishes to help host a show and get involved with AMHS NSW Committee or knows of any venues that may have all the requirements at an affordable price, we would love to hear about them. Take care and be kind to one another, Christine Cantrill Central NSW State Rep
Congratulations Kelsey…

NORTH NEW SOUTH WALES REPORT
By Rosslyn Badcock, NSW We had our first Northern AMHS Championship Show at Lismore on 17th June 2012. It was a great success with everyone having a great time. I would like to thank Narelle Little who helped me all the way, Ross Fleming who came down from Rocky to help out on the day and the Lismore businesses for their sponsorship of the day with lots of bags of feed to give away. We had lots of media coverage in the paper (refer below for articles written before/after the Show) and on T V with large crowds turning out on the day to see our beautiful miniatures. The crowds were so big that I started to ask people if they knew someone with horses. They all said, “No, we saw it in the news paper so just came to have a look.” Last Sunday, the 29th July, we were asked to take part in The Blessing of The Horses and the Horses’ Birthday Party at the Ballina Riding For Disabled. Dalina and Mark Gravson and myself and my husband took some of our horses along. What a day! I took Barney (my harness horse) and three others that got lots of pats. Barney gave rides to lots of disabled kids. Our horses were a great hit and we will be going back on a regular basis with horses so these kids can learn to train and show our horses. We will be having a show down there for them to compete in. It was a very special day for us all and all the horses got birthday cake in dishes with chaff. We will be having another show in Lismore and one in Grafton as soon as dates are set. I will post them on the AMHS site. Talk to you soon Rosslyn Congratulations to our North NSW Rep, Rosslyn Badcock on all the wonderful media coverage that AMHS received both prior and after her very first AMHS Nth NSW Championship Show at Lismore on the 17th June. The huge crowds loved watching the miniatures on display, showing everything from Halter to Performance events. Thank you to everyone who supported the day….

The highest death rate for horses is in the first two days following birth so it is a critical period. Experienced owners and veterinarians describe three things that can dramatically increase your foal’s chance of survival.
The Three Ps of Young Foal Management 1. Preparation 2. Problem Recognition 3. Prompt Intervention 1. Preparation
To avoid the potential for panic should something go wrong it is best to be well prepared. A number of things can be performed before, during and immediately after birth. Before Birth Identify high risk mares and provide appropriate veterinary care during pregnancy Vaccinate (5th, 7th, 9th month and 30 days prior to birth) and worm the mare Provide good nutrition to the mare (avoid fescue) Prepare a foal emergency kit (see below) Clean the stalls and use clean bedding materials (not sawdust) Install a foal (birthing) monitor Understand how to perform foal CPR (close off one nostril and breathe into the other ensuring that the lungs inflate) Prepare a frozen colostrum bank, or the easier option Have frozen plasma on stock Observe the mare for colostrum leakage and vaginal discharge (signs of placentitis) Wash down the mare’s hindquarters before delivery During Birth Be unobtrusively present and observant during the birth process Observe for “red bag” delivery (an emergency) Keep and weigh the placenta (normal is 10% of foal weight – approximately 5kg) Following Birth Call your veterinarian to ensure the foal is examined within 12-24 hours of birth Wash down the mare’s hindquarters before suckling Observe foal for colostrum ingestion, or the easier option Ensure the veterinarian administers a litre of plasma Perform an enema Leave umbilicus intact for as long as possible. If is usually broken by the foal attempting to stand. If you must break it pull the cord apart while holding close to the abdomen AUSTRALIAN MINIATURE
Turn out the mare and foal for one hour per day increasing per day. By 10-12 days the mare and foal can run with other mares and foals.
2. Problem Recognition
The key to problem recognition is having an understanding what is normal. The following tables provide a general guideline to normal and abnormal foal signs in the first 48 hours.
Normal Foal Signs Sign
Normal
Breathing Standing
Within 30 seconds of birth Within one hour of birth (some heavy breeds are slower) Within two hours of birth 130/minute in first hour. 95/minute up to 48 hours (at rest) 70/minute in first 10 minutes. 35/minute for first 48 hours (at rest) Black, dry & tarry stools within 12-24hrs of birth 3-5 times per hour 10% of foal weight (average is 5kg) Alert, active, suckling Straw coloured within 12hrs & every time it suckles
Suckling Pulse rate Respiratory Rate Passing of Meconium Nursing Frequency Placental Weight Behaviour Urinating
Abnormal Foal Signs Sign
What it might mean
Milk coming from nose
Sunk back
Cleft palate, risk of pneumonia, Too much milk in one session Meconium aspiration, risk of pneumonia Dummy foal (lack of oxygen during birth) Not nursing Neonatal isoerythrolysis, jaundice Septicaemia Dehydration, malnutrition or an eye problem Infection, Septicaemia Colic Sick, septicaemia Patent urachus Ruptured bladder Straining to defecate, Meconium retention Straining to urinate
Pain on breathing
Potential broken ribs
Orange fluid from nose Behavioural changes Milk on face Yellow gums Brick red gums Eyes sunken or teary Swollen Joints Bloat Weak or lethargic Urine from umbilicus Abdominal enlargement Arched back

EWCOMER A Newcomers Perspective of AMHS!
By Maddison Morgan
Hi guys, I’m Maddison Morgan. Just to tell you a little about myself, I am from NSW. I have been showing for two years now with my best friend, Brydan Train, with the support and encouragement of my grandmother making it all possible. Brydan and I purchased our first miniatures before Christmas of 2010. Even though I only showed my little Bubby for six months, she taught me so much in a short period of time. Having been bitten by the mini bug, I bought two Harrington Park fillies and Bryden, in turn, had his little gelding that worships him. They are the perfect show team. My grandmother, who, of course, is now also addicted owns two miniatures that we show. Bryden and I attended our first AMHS show, the AMHS Christmas Show, where my black filly won her first supreme. I will never forget for as long as I live how proud I was of my little girl. Brydan and I gain a new learning experience at each AMHS show we attend, learning the importance of preparation, good sportsmanship, but best of all have found it so much fun. Bryan and I were approached by Priscilla Maher of Carousel Park to show one of her horses. This went on to become a wonderful opportunity for Brydan and myself. Our next show, the AMHS Horse of the Year State show, we were just lucky enough to take out four Supremes, two with Priscilla’s horses, and two Supremes with our own. The experience gained, and the support shown to the youth, along with the guidance and trust given to us by AMHS and Priscilla Maher has truly been a life-
Changing experience for myself and Brydan, as well as boosting our confidence. The support shown to the newcomers in this industry by the breeders has also been wonderful. I would never have competed seriously if had not been for Harrington Park and Sedona Miniatures, who not only sold me my beautiful Harrington Park horses but have continued to offer their support, help and advice along the way. Why youth should get involved I never pictured myself showing miniatures. To be honest, before buying Bubby, I didn’t see miniature horse showing as something that would be exciting. The best thing about showing miniatures is the fact I finally found something I loved to do and could see myself showing for the rest of my life. The people I have meet through showing I hope to stay friends with forever. The encouragement shown by the society to youth, the new friendships between the kids I have met and all the times we have stood around in the ring talking and waiting for our turn are all moments, I will cherish. As a newcomer, my personal perspective on showing is, at the end of the day, everyone wants to win; but if you go out with your head held high and have fun you win either way. I can defiantly say that miniatures will be with me for the rest of my life and there are so many people I could never thank enough. As the industry grows, I hope I can grow with it. I’ve been told by numerous people that youth are the future of miniatures and I strongly advise any youths out there to get out and have a go as it will change your life as it has mine and Brydan’s. Thankyou Maddison Morgan
Foals Best Start Continued from Page 25 3. Prompt Intervention
Once a problem has been identified it is always best to err on the side of caution and intervene quickly. Having an emergency foal kit available will help, as will a routine examination by your veterinarian within the first 12-24 hours of birth. It is also important to know that the biggest cause of death in foals is related to infection – through wounds, trauma, injuries and failure of passive transfer. Foals are born with an immune system that is largely a “blank slate” incapable of fighting infection and they absolutely must have colostrum, or if that fails, intravenous plasma until their own immune system matures. Colostrum provides essential infection-fighting antibodies and administration of plasma, high in antibody content and other infection-fighting agents, provides extra insurance and peace of mind. Emergency Foaling Kit Contents Item Use Umbilical Tape Tie the umbilicus if it is bleeding Antiseptic navel dip Twice daily immersion of the (not neat iodine) umbilical stump Large syringe with the Obtain colostrum from the mare end cut off & reversed Small syringe or bottle Administer colostrum to the foal with nipple
Examination gloves Large plastic bag with tie Antibiotics Enema materialsTowels Clean containers Bucket of warm water Elasticised bandage Frozen colostrum Frozen plasma Scales K-Y
Photos Above Top: Maddison Morgan. Middle: Maddison Morgan. Bottom: Bryden Train & Maddison Morgan
Handling umbilicus & placenta For keeping the placenta For administration twice daily for three days Prevention of retained meconium warm soapy water & catheter Drying the foal Collection of colostrum Cleaning of mare’s perineum & legs Tying up the placenta off the Mare’s hocks Administration to foal Administration to foal To weigh the placenta Lubrication for enema
Key Points The highest rate of death for horses is in the first 2 days of life The key to managing your foal through this period is: Preparation, Problem Recognition and Prompt Intervention (3Ps) Have a Veterinarian examine your foal within 12-24 hours of birth The biggest killer of foals relates to infection Make sure you foal gets colostrum Make sure your Veterinarian gives your foal plasma (stock some yourself)

VICTORIAN REPORT
A great effort by all Committee and all I can say is thanks to all the AMHS Members who gave us a go and have been coming back ever since. A great addition has been the Miniature Pony section. It has been building with every show and with the new season upon us, I can see it growing to put on a third ring. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed and please keep supporting AMHS as we are here for you the Members. In March AMHS conducted our first Victorian State Show and we put on an extensive program for Miniature, Small Horse and Miniature Pony. Record numbers entered and also record numbers of stables were hired out. It was a fantastic weekend had by all. Because of the large following supporting AMHS Victoria we put classes on for the first time on Friday, something new and we were not sure how the Members would take it.
winners, it is a credit to you all. See you all in the ring! Rob Lester Victorian State Representative
They took it very well, in fact with as I said record numbers for all three days of the State Championship Show. Trophies, Sashes, Ribbons and prizes were all fantastic and loved by all, as I am sure you would have seen on our face book pages.

LOUIS CONNARD
My First State Show Experience By Louis Connard
At the State Show in 2011, Louis did not show, as he felt he was too young and little to compete successfully against the older children. What a difference a year makes. With the introduction of ‘Tiny Tot” classes by AMHS Inc. and a full season of showing under his belt with AMHS Victoria, Louis was very excited about competing at the 2012 AMHS Victorian Horse of the Year State Championship Show. Tell us about your favourite horse/s: Sweetie - she has a white mane and tail and is very quiet and she also likes to jump. I am thinking of competing in Performance Classes, especially the jumping. Remy- he is little like me and is also very quiet.
What was your proudest moment at States? My proudest moment was on the Sunday afternoon taking my brother’s horse, which I had never handled before and competing against the big kids to win Best Presented Child Handler. Tell us what else you liked about States? I really liked sitting up in the stands and watching the horses run around in the Liberty event. I really loved the Dutch Auction on the Saturday night. I love watching the people bidding but I got tired and had to go to bed. Final Overview With the Tiny Tot classes, it gave me the confidence to try showing and now I love it.
“WATCH OUT BIG KIDS (INCLUDING WILLIAM) HERE I COME….”
What do you like most about the State Show? I like the idea of staying over for a couple of nights at the State Show.
What Training did you do leading up to States? The training that I did was going into the paddock with my big brother (William) and pretending that we were at a show, practicing workouts and standing the horses up. How did you go at the State Show? I won my Tiny Tot Turnout at the State Show.
LACHLAN
THOMAS
My First State Show Experience By Lachlan Thomas
What Training did you do before States? Mum trains me very hard before a big show. I have to work with my horse every day to make sure it listens to me. I have to practice my handling, making sure my horse stays beside me, then we do some jumps and then some side pass and backing to make sure he is switched on. Before we left I had to get his feet trimmed, wash him so that mum and Ashleigh could clip him and then find his rugs to put on. I then had to clean my show halter and make sure my shoes were polished. I’m lucky my mum cleans my clothes and irons them before I show otherwise I would never be ready. What did you like about States? I liked showing at the State Show because this year we showed in the kids stuff on the Friday and so we didn’t have to run from one ring to another. I think I had a good show, but even if I don’t win a class, as long as my horse behaves the way he should and I do the best I can, I am happy. What was the Funniest moment? When we tried to put the fancy dress together and it just didn’t want to stay the way we wanted.
What was your proudest moment? My proudest moment was when I competed in the Show Jumping, Six Bar and Fault and Out in the Youth Classes. I had always wanted to be able to do these classes and finally mum couldn’t say no. Final Overview I enjoyed the whole weekend as I got to spend time with my horses, family and friends that I don’t get to see any other time except at shows. But my favourite time is the kids fun classes, when we all laugh and have fun being silly with our horses, a big thank you to Kooka and Maree for making it so much fun. I hope to compete next year….

We ask some top Showies “What’s your Secret?” to help other Members in the Show Ring…
SHOW PREPARATION TIPS
After you have bathed your pony/horse, most people scrap them down and then towel off. What I do is to use a large car chamois, wipe it over them, ring out, do a bit more and ring out again. By the time you have done all over, the pony is pretty much dry or close to it. Most people wipe a sheepskin mitt over their horse/pony just before going in the ring. Yes, they work but better still is a household dusting cloth. Not sure what they call them but they are a funny material and when you wipe over your pony it grabs any dust or little hairs or anything on the coat and leaves the coat squeaky clean and shiny. You can buy them from the $2 shop and at the end of the day just pop in the wash. After you have done your full body clip, mix up some Alpha Keri moisturizing oil (about a one second squirt in to a 250ml spray bottle with some water) and spray all you’re your horse’s body, Do this daily and brush through or massage in to skin for the first week to ten days .It keeps the skin nice and supple. Thank you Leanne Williams (Kimmini Stud, Bendigo) For horses and ponies with very thin tails, the best way to promote a healthy thick and long tail is to wash and condition the tail, then wrap and plait the tail and leave it alone. If you do this through the winter or from the end of one show season to the start of another, you will be amazed at how much tail your horse will have. This works even for the appys, well known for not having much tail at all. Do this and your horse will have a beautiful thick and long tail in no time. Thank you Angela Watkins (Storms Haven Mini Wear, Vic) Sunlight soap or Sunlight dishwashing liquid will strip green stains and smudges from white tails, bodies and legs. To remove yellow urine stains from white tails use fresh lemon juice. Leave in for at least 30 minutes then wash and condition as usual. Thank you Tracey Filicietti, NSW Always ensure you balance your Show Horse's feed with the correct proportions of ALL food groups. When showing, lay off the show sheen and colour enhancements. A healthy coat colour and shine comes from the INSIDE just as much as from the outside. Thank you Rebecca Harper, QLD Here is a great show tip for competitors whose horse has a scar or white mark made from rug-rubbing. It can be difficult to find the right colour make-up to cover the blemish. I find that the cheap Nugget found in Safeway supermarket will cover just about anything and it’s really cheap. Nugget comes in black, brown, beige and white and costs around 90 cents for a small tub. By mixing a few different combinations you can come very close, if not perfect, to the colour you need to cover up. Then just paint it on the area and blend it in. I had a palomino with a dreadful white line in front where the rug clip would rub. By using beige and dark brown I mixed them together on a little paint pallet and covered the mark with great success. Hope people find this helpful. Thank you Artemis Demopoulis-Rault, VIC
The simplest way to remove knots from your horse’s mane and tail is to pour some baby oil on the knot and rub into the hair. Then brush with a stiff brush, starting at the bottom. Knots come straight out. Thank you Janeane McConnell, VIC How about teaching a foal to tie up first before leading? It will teach them to deal with themselves and pressure so they are less inclined to fight you when leading. NB Do not tie up your foal and leave unattended (less is more). Ten minutes is long enough. Thank you Melissa Sticklen, QLD
HALTER SHOWING AND TRAINING
I hope I can help you with a few quick tips on training and showing your miniature horse. Never try to teach your horse too much at one time. The secret is short bursts and many of them. Don't be discouraged if they won't do what you want after 5 minutes, it’s like fine wine it takes time, time and more time. Teach your horse to walk first and stay with that until you are happy with your horse walking on command then move to other commands, trot, stand, stretch and so on. Talk to your horse and let them know what you want them to do. Don't just expect them to guess what you are trying to do.
SHOWRING TIPS
Always show respect to the Judge, Stewards and most of all other Competitors. Show attire should be as well dressed as possible. Good fitting clothes are a must. Be confident in the ring put your best foot forward, listen to the Judge, if you’re not sure of the workout ask again before you start. Don't bother asking half way through your workout. Remember you are always on show from the time you are waiting outside the ring till you are leaving the ring. See future issues of Stable Talk for what I call the “1% Difference”, it can make all the difference in the show ring. I always say “a good handler can sometimes be the difference between winning and losing”. If you have a question about showing please “Ask the Trainer” (refer below) and we will try & help. So until next issue see you in the show ring. Thankyou Rob Lester, Kooka Heights Miniature Horses Note From the Editor: With so many new Members joining AMHS each month, I’d like to start up a regular “Ask the Trainer” Feature to accompany our “Stable Talk” Anything you would like to know or are unsure of, please send in your questions to: admin@amhs.com.au with “Ask the Trainer” as the subject line and we will organise an answer t o your query & feature it in the next issue of Elite Magazine to help others. If you have ideas on other articles you would like to see included in Elite Magazine please make sure you also send them in as I’d love to hear from you!
