PRESIDENT’S REPORT
By Diana Trainor, VIC Pictured Right: Presentations at last years Victorian Hi Points Awards Day: Tiny Tot Overall Winner, Lachlan Thomas, VIC State Rep, Rob Lester & Diana Trainor.
It is hard to believe we are fast approaching the end of yet another wonderful year with AMHS. I would like to thank all the hard working, volunteer Committee Members from all over Australia who are giving up their time to help organise and promote AMHS Shows/Events in their areas. You will see we have a few National Committee positions available for any eligible Members who have relevant experience and would like to get involved at National level. We can’t thank Craig Meade and his family enough for all the time, effort and support Craig, Jenny and Simone have put into AMHS as we would have been lost without you. Craig has recently had to make the tough decision to step away from his National Committee duties (due to personal reasons) as he no longer has the time available, but both he & Jenny wish to continue on at State level, which we are thrilled to still have them involved.
Thank you to all the Members who are flocking to AMHS and showing your support for this prestigious Society, it is fantastic to see so many new Members each week joining AMHS. THANK YOU to all those who have stood by us from the start, we truly value and appreciate each and every one of you. It is thanks to all our Members support, who have kept us strong and will continue to do so for many years to come.
EDITOR’S REPORT
By Kay Tuohey, VIC Sorry for the delay in this edition of Elite Magazine, just when you think you are catching up, something happens and things get delayed….
As you will see on the Noticeboard, we are on the look out for a new Editor to take on the production of Elite Magazine from Issue 7 onwards, as time restraints with other National & State Committee duties has greatly reduced the time I have to continue on in this role. I'm happy to help and support the new Editor, but we need someone with the experience, passion and time available to take on this role. Enough of that, so in this issue we have covered a number of shows from various States all over Australia. The next issue of Elite (Issue 6) is already in production and bookings for any Ads are to be paid for and submitted to myself by the 20th May. Please book your ad in by contacting me: admin@amhs.com.au Page 2

We look forward to a bigger show season for all our Queensland Members this year with the introduction of our South QLD Rep and a number of shows being planned for that area. Our North QLD Committee are very excited and planning a number of events also so its going to be a very busy State, hopefully finishing off the season with our very first Queensland State Show later this year. Our website is constantly updated with show dates and plans for each area. Just a reminder to all our States (accept QLD) that your State Elections are coming up in May, so you will need to apply/reapply for your State Committee Positions. Please take the time to think about joining a State Committee if you haven't already as it's a fantastic way to get to know other Members, have an input into Shows in your area/State and its just a great way to be involved and work as a team who have a common interest. Please refer to Noticeboard. Congratulations to our Victorian Branch for the successful running and organisation of the two major equine events in your State this season, the Royal Melbourne and Barastoc HOTY (this is the second year that AMHS have run the Barastoc Show with another very successful show). We have big things happening in NSW with another couple of areas starting up as some Members have kindly volunteered their time to come on board and organise shows in their areas and with all the excitement and events being planned for the upcoming season, I'm sure we will see a number of happy NSW Members. Western Australia also has a number of events in the pipeline and we look forward to supporting and encouraging even more AMHS events for our WA Members. I look forward to our next chat… Diana Trainor President As we have also just had our NSW and VIC State Horse of the Year Shows, instead of trying to squeeze them into this issue as I'm still waiting on photos, a complete coverage of both shows, will be featured in the next issue of Elite, along with photos from shows held Mar-April. As you will all be aware, at the last AGM you the Members voted in a new resolution that Elite Magazine will be produced when it has the Ads and Content to cover/warrant printing the magazine. So some years we may not produce four issues, it may only be two or three (again it is all based on the support by Advertising and Content to go in each issue), as that is in the best interests of the Society. I'd like to sincerely thank all the professionals who have taken the time to write articles for the magazine, we really appreciate all of you, as it is with your wealth of knowledge and experience that you are willing to share, encourage and guide others that keeps the industry growing for those who want to learn and as I always say, we can always keep learning... Enjoy the read, talk soon Kay Tuohey Editor HORSE SOCIETY INC.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA REPORT
By Kirsty Bradford, WA Hi All! The big news is that we recently held our inaugural Golden Buckle Show in early November at Brookleigh Equestrian Centre. I didn’t think it possible but it was bigger and better than the Silver Trophy and all in all comments from the day were resoundingly positive. The common theme was that it was the best show in a long time! I would once again like to extend a HUGE thank-you to ALL of our Sponsors both new and repeat and especially to Orange Australia who came on board once again as our Major Sponsor. Without the support of these businesses and people we would not be able to bring these events to fruition. The best way for us to show our thanks is to support these organisations wherever we can as it results in a win-win for all. I also extend a HUGE thank-you to all the people who volunteered and helped out on the day no matter how big or small, you are all greatly valued and appreciated!! The big surprise of the day was Sophie who was our Ring Marshall on the Pony and Performance Ring. She was a last minute volunteer but her assistance was outstanding – I had many people comment on how wonderful she was on the PA. Sophie spoke clearly and kept the classes moving through in an efficient and timely manner. This was also duplicated in the horse ring but the difference being that Sophie is 14! Sophie, anytime you wish to help out we will be more than glad to have you on board and Danni too of course, thank-you both! I don’t have the room to thank everyone individually but please know how grateful we are for all of the assistance that was given before, during and after this event. You are all deeply appreciated and highly valued!
The Golden Buckle itself was a fantastic Show – despite the weather trying to literally dampen the occasion!! Nice introduction to WA for Jenny and Craig Meade who made the trek across from Victoria. Jenny did a wonderful job in the pony ring and was especially informative with the performance. Craig excelled as MC and assisting with ensuring the smooth running of both rings in co-ordination with the Ring Marshalls. It was great to finally put faces to names and have someone from AMHS National at this event. It also gave us the coup of having two eastern State
Judges – Thanks also to Teena Crutchley who did a wonderful job in the horse ring and judging of harness. I think for many people the highlight of the Show (apart from the buckles of course) were seeing so many Tiny Tots and Youth competitors having a great day and giving everything a go! Special congratulations go out to Madeline Ronci who competed in and won our newly added class for handlers with a disability or special needs. She did a great job despite her pony having an aversion to thunder – Well done Madeline, I hope to see you at our next event! After many rumours and speculation – especially at the Golden Buckle, I am pleased to announce that ÿes” AMHS WA is taking on “The Mighty Mini Breed Show & Games” that is held in Bunbury every April. We feel deeply privileged to have been offered the opportunity to take on this iconic event and look forward to working closely with the previous committee and the Bunbury Show Committee in making this a weekend to remember. For those that are unaware this is a two day event that is held within the Bunbury Horse & Country Music Festival – a show within a show if you like. The Silver Trophy 2013 is also on the board for planning – busy times for the WA Committee!!! On that note we desperately need more people to work actively on the Committee. So if you love what you have seen from AMHS so far imagine what we can achieve with a couple of more people on board. You do not need to know the Constitution inside out or the history of minis, what you do need though is a willingness to work hard in a team environment and be able to have a laugh! The reward is being actively part of a wonderful Society and assisting in bringing prestigous events to WA. If you think this is you then please contact myself or one of the other Committee Members to register your interest. I have also been approached by a few people who are interested in attending a clinic on performance. If anyone else is please contact me interested could you (kparmani08@hotmail.com or 0409 376 275) to register your interest. This way I can get an idea on numbers and see if it is viable. Cheers! Kirsty

NORTH NEW SOUTH WALES REPORT
By Rosslyn Badcock, NSW What a season it has been for North NSW with a number of shows in new areas which have all been a wonderful success. We are looking forward already to the next show season with shows being planned all around N.S.W. and Southern Qld. We are working on the following: Caboolture on the 21st April 2013. Hawkesbury Showground on the 18th-19th May. Lismore in June (date TBA). Yass in Sept (date TB). Grafton in Nov (date TBA). This is just our initial plans for shows, more will be added as Committees lock in venues/dates. We will be happy to look at any other place/venues but we also need people on the ground to help with getting Sponsorship and all the on the ground (preparation things etc leading up to the show and on the day tasks etc) all the
things you can't do from long distance. I am happy to help run any shows and organise all paper work and entries etc for any event (but we need manpower on the ground and people willing to help on the day if you want shows in your area, we want our Members involved). Thank you so much to all the Members who have been supporting our shows, we greatly appreciate each and every one of you. Thank you also to all those who have put there hands up to help in different areas so far, the more willing to help the more shows and the more fun Members in all areas can have. Please call or email me at any time you wish to discuss shows and/or AMHS events in your area. Please also keep your eye on the AMHS Website and Facebook page for all the latest NSW Show/Event related information. Have fun showing in the meantime, I hope to meet you all soon at an upcoming AMHS Show, Talk to you soon Rosslyn

We recently had a wonderful show program for our NSW State show which was held in Dubbo, the Dubbo venue was decided on as being the most central to the NSW area (photos and complete coverage will be in the next issue of Elite Magazine).

REPORT
I hope that everyone has had a wonderful Christmas & well earned rest, the New Year I am sure has plenty in store for us all with so many exciting things being worked on for AMHS. With NSW Show Season now in full swing it is full steam ahead for our Reps organising shows, and as we always promote, please contact us if you have any suggestions as they are always welcome. Please also contact us if you would like to get involved more with helping out on an AMHS Committee or even just offering to help with the day to day running of shows as we are always looking for more Members to get involved with our Shows. I would like to say a big welcome to our new Reps that have offered to give up their time to run shows in different areas. Donna Gilroy and Nicola Fields will be running events in the New Castle / Hunter Valley areas; both have a wealth of experience in the industry to share and we are thrilled to have them onboard running AMHS Events. We would also like to welcome and thank the following Members from our Northern area for getting involved with NSW Committee: Joanne Rains, Rob Barnes, Ronda Barnes, Amy Collin, Amanda Drinkwater, Kylie Raines, & Vivian Raines We are also about to launch another new area in NSW which we have had some wonderful Members volunteer to organise and run AMHS Shows in their area, further details will be promoted shortly Page 8

affordable rate to our Competitors and to the Society while being central to all NSW Members (we always try to accommodate all our Members when planning our shows). We have had a lot of prizes up for grabs recently with the three beautiful raffles which were running leading up to and drawn at the State Show (these raffles are organised to raise funds for future AMHS NSW events, as such all money raised goes back to our Competitors, so it is a win, win situation for all), please support our raffles and support your club when they are being promoted, you never know you may just win.... Please keep checking the AMHS website for the latest show updates. AMHS NSW now also has its our face book page where you can chat to Rosslyn or Brett and they will be happy to answer any questions you have no matter what it is (as we know you would not be asking if it was not important to you). We look forward to seeing you all again at an AMHS Event. Take care and be kind to one another. Christine Cantrill, STH NSW State Rep. HORSE SOCIETY INC.

VALLEY SHOW REPORT
By Donna Gilroy, NSW
Thank you to FOODWORKS, LORN for Sponsoring our first Show... The big wet fails to dampen show spirits! Despite torrential rain, the AMHS Hunter Valley Show held on Australia Day Weekend attracted competitors from as far away as Queensland, and proved enormously successful. Everyone likes a Summer shower but when dawn broke at the NSW Equestrian Centre in Lochinvar on Australia Day, it was clear that competitors at the AMHS Hunter Valley Show were in for quite a drenching. Despite the rain and wind, the show attracted over 50 entries including Queenslanders. As a result, the quality of exhibits was extremely high with strong numbers in all classes. Our Judge for the day, Tracey McGovern, demonstrated the Aussie spirit remaining in the ring even when the weather threw its worst at us. It’s probably fair to say Tracey was hugely relieved when the performance events were moved to the indoor arena. In order to escape the worst of the weather, competitors and their horses huddled under the cover of the stable annex, and it is a credit to all competitors and their exhibits that both people and animals remained good natured throughout the day. Youth Competitors stand out from the crowd! Some highlights of the day included a strong contingent of Youth competitors – some, like Olivia Moy, were aged as young as three years old. These children demonstrated some outstanding skills in showmanship and performance, proving that the future of the miniature horse industry looks very bright indeed. Our most successful Youth competitors included Claire Gilroy and Charlet East. Our congratulations go to all Youth competitors who were rewarded with lolly bags when an increasingly damp arena meant the AMHS’s famous Hobby Horse Derby had to be abandoned. Rumour has it that our horse measurer for the day – Steve Dwyer, has his hobby horse in intense training ready for the next AMHS event. Keen competition in halter events! The standard of Exhibits in our halter classes was excellent, giving our Judge a tough time deciding winners. It was wonderful to see a terrific turnout in the senior miniature gelding class(5), all handled by their young owners. The top halter Exhibits were represented by our following Supreme winners: Miniature Horse - Unique Park Baileys and Cream – Margaret Webb Small Horse - Sapphire Park Wizz’s Knock Ya Socks Off – Danielle Deamer Page 14

For our Performance Competitors it was wonderful to be able to compete for a Supreme Performance Horse Award. It takes years of training and teamwork for a horse and handler to reach their peak in the performance disciplines and we are grateful to AMHS for acknowledging this investment and supporting performance with a ‘Supreme Performance’ accolade. And many congratulations to our two Supreme Performance winners; Supreme Miniature Performance – Silver Star Sombrero – Spellbound Miniatures

Successful events are always the result of a team effort and we would like to thank all our Sponsors who provided the financial support necessary to make the day so rewarding. A big thanks also to Australian Horse Welfare, who provided catering for the day and proved that it’s possible to have an Aussie barbecue on Australia Day Weekend and still attend a horse show. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Meyrick family for the use of their PA system. Finally, thank you to all our Competitors who showed such good sportsmanship in testing conditions throughout the entire day. We aim to hold additional AMHS shows in the Hunter Valley later in 2013, please check the website for details. Until next time, Donna Gilroy HORSE SOCIETY INC.

VICTORIAN REPORT
By Rob Lester, VIC Hi All I hope your foaling has brought you some lovely foals and look forward to seeing them all out and about at upcoming AMHS Shows. Well, what a great season we have had with record numbers attending our monthly AMHS Championship Shows in Victoria. With both major Victorian equine events tied up this, our second season it was a mighty achievement for your AMHS Victorian Committee. Melbourne Summer Royal, for the first time ever approached and requested that AMHS run their Miniature section of the Show and we did not disappoint, with more horses attending there, than they have had in the last 6 years combined total. Needless to say both Royal Melbourne and AMHS were both thrilled with the support for this event. The other major event was Barsatoc HOTY (our second year running the Miniatures for this major equine event) and despite the heat, this was also a prestigious and high quality run AMHS event, attracting the highest calibre of horses from Victoria and New South Wales.
With AMHS, we pride ourselves on putting on the best quality shows for our Members with safety for our Members, horses and ponies paramount with everything we provide. It is great to see the constant new number of new people coming out and enjoying our AMHS events as word starts to spread that AMHS IS the Society to join if you want to be a part of the best Miniature Society in Australia! Ponies have been building steadily all season and we hope it will keep increasing so we can continue to support you the pony Member as well as our horse Members. A special call to all our pony Members to please spread the word with all your other pony enthusiast friends, we want to see more of you enjoying what AMHS has to provide. To all our horse Members who might have shown years ago, come and give us a go and experience the difference of showing with AMHS for yourself as it is unlike any other Society. AMHS go above and beyond with everything they do from quality of shows, prizes and awards on offer at each of our prestigious events. A comprehensive show coverage of our recent Victorian Horse of the Year State Title Show will be featured in the next edition of Elite, so we have room to cover the entire three day event. Until next time, see you in the show ring Regards Rob Lester State Delegate Victoria

hen purchasing a harness there are several important things for you to be mindful of, I will cover them for you.
Let's start by breaking them down into the following categories:
QUALITY
Quality is job number one. One can purchase inferior products from a variety of places in the world. I recommend that the Exhibitor take their time and compare the leather and craftsmanship. I prefer the products that are made here in North America as they have superior quality and are the results of a timeless workmanship passed down through the generations of craftsmen.
LEATHER
I always examine the type of leather used and the attention paid to detailing and leather dying. I prefer a soft and supple, natural, high quality leather and I completely avoid synthetic products. High quality leather not only looks elegant and classy it is also a better fit with your horse, cart and the presentation in the show ring.
DURABILITY, COMFORT & STRENGTH
I believe durability, comfort and strength are essential elements to consider when making your investment and are vital to your success in terms of function and turn out and keeping your horse comfortable and happy. Fine detailing is the mark of a truly superior product. The things I look for are, stitching, padding under your saddle, patent leather, gold or silver piping, filigree detailing, high quality buckles and other hardware. I will not purchase, use or sell a harness that has staples instead of stitching. Top quality harnesses are a vital part of a driving safety program and if well maintained will last for many years. Remember, you always get what you pay for.

each your horse to "WHOA" or "STAND" is the most important part of harnessing your horse..
Cross tying your horse for harnessing is a very good idea as you have more control on your animal.
“Please always be careful and GENTLE with putting the bit into the horses mouth”
I put the saddle on first, this is the piece of harness that sits on the back of the horse just past “the wither.” The best and correct way of fitting this piece is, run your fingers on each side of the spine just coming down the wither, put a small amount of pressure on your hands to do this, when you are coming down off the wither your horse will flinch or push his back down “THAT is the SPOT” where the saddle is to go. When you cinch your girth (saddle) on the horse it does not have to be super tight! Make it comfortable for the animal. It is best to wait for your animal to relax and move him out before tightening the girth again. Next we will fit the crupper or the back breeching. If you are using the crupper, make sure all the hair of the tail is not underneath, that will cut into the tail and the horse will buck. Also never, never have a very loose crupper but also not overly tight either. Take extra care that the crupper is smoothly fitted and clean with NO hair that would be trapped under it! If you are using breeching make sure it also is not to tight or loose, slide the lines through the saddle area (over back) till you are ready to hook up. The holdback straps for the breeching should be doubled back through their own keepers or buckled. Breeching is the brake system! Make sure that the strap is fastened to the saddle. Make sure that the tail is not on the inside of the breeching. Put your breast collar on make sure it is fitted over the wither. (Non -collar). Have the front so it is just above the shoulder point and slide your traces over the top of the horses butt criss-crossing up top till ready to hook up. Next, put the bridle on. Please be careful and GENTLE with putting the bit in the horses’ mouth. You do NOT have to have the 2 wrinkle side mouth method, you do not want the bit to be that tight, loose enough but not too loose on the bit so the tongue can go over. Tighten the noseband gently. Make sure it is two fingers width below the horse’s prominent cheekbone or tear bone and adjust the blinkers so they are not touching the horse’s eyes but not too wide that they are widely open either. Fasten the throat- latch and leave it loose enough that two to three fingers can fit between it and the horse’s neck. Keep all your lines gathered and strapped under the straps of the harness, keep your reins gathered do not let any reins or lines on the ground. Now you are ready for the carriage. Bring the carriage up behind the horse and make sure you talk to your horse and put your hands on so he will not be alarmed, bring the shafts through the loops on the saddle. Attach the harness traces to the tree of the carriage Always do the traces first just in case the horse leaps forward or makes a sudden jump. Now that the traces and breeching are hooked up we will adjust the wrap straps or over girth buckles. Once we are all hooked up, push the cart forward
and back a little to check adjustments and then double check all your buckles!! When you wan to go into the cart even when someone is holding the horses make sure that you have the reins in your hands for control and your whip. Now you can go have fun!!!!! There are other pieces of the harness that may not be used at this time such as the side checks or over checks, but that is a different lesson! Please always refer to your own Societies Rules on what equipment can and can't be used as this article is written to USA Harness Standards. Compliments of:

CONFORMATION Things to look for in a horse‌
N
Breed Standards of Perfection by AMHS Inc.
o matter what the purpose is for your horse, showing or breeding, always make sure you take seriously the horses conformation (especially before breeding with a horse)!
With so many Miniatures available on todays market, it is all the more reason why CONFORMATION should play a big part in what you buy, show and breed. In this article we will go through the Breed Standard of Perfection for AMHS. The pictures included apply to any horse or pony, as LEGS are a very important part of conformation. As soon as you look at a horse or pony you should be able to identify these basic leg faults, take the time to learn about each one. General Impression: A small, sound, well-balanced horse, possessing the correct conformation characteristics required of most breeds. In fact, if there was no size reference, the miniature horse might give the illusion of being a full sized horse. The miniature horse should show refinement and femininity in the mare. Boldness and masculinity in the stallion at the same time showing an impeccable temperament. The general impression should be one of symmetry, strength, agility and alertness. Since the breed objective is the smallest possible perfect horse, preference in judging shall be given the smaller horse, other characteristics being approximately equal. Size: Must measure not more than 34 inches at the withers, at the last hairs of the mane for a miniature horse and not more than 38 inches at the withers at the last hairs of the mane for a small horse. Head: In proportion to length of neck and body. Broad forehead with large prominent eyes set wide apart. Comparatively short distance between eyes and muzzle. Profile straight or slightly concave below the eyes. Large nostrils. Clean, refined. Teeth: An even bite is necessary with no more than 3mm out. Overshot or parrot mouth is a disqualification. Ears: Medium in size. Pointed. Carried alertly with tips curving slightly inward. Throat-Latch: Clean and well defined allowing ample flexion at the poll. Neck: Flexible, lengthy, in proportion to body and type and blending smoothly into the withers. Shoulder: Long, sloping and well angulated, allowing a free-swinging stride and alert head/neck carriage. Well-muscled forearm. Body: Well muscled with ample bone and substance. Balanced and well proportioned. Short back and loins in relation to length of underline. Smooth and generally level top-line. Deep girth and flank. Trim barrel. Hindquarters: Long, well-muscled hip, thigh and gaskin. Highest point of croup to be same height as withers, Tail set neither excessively high or low, but smoothly rounding off rump. Legs: Lengthy and slender in proportion to the rest of the body. Set straight and parallel when viewed from front or back. Straight, true and squarely set, when viewed from the side with hooves pointing directly ahead. Pasterns sloping about 45 degrees & blending smoothly, with no change of angle from the hooves to the ground. Hooves to be round and compact. Trimmed as short as practicable for an unshod horse. Gait: Smooth, fluid gait in motion. Naturally free moving. Colour: Any colour or marking pattern, and any eye colour, is equally "Please take the time to get to know the above acceptable. The coat should be lustrous and silky. faults, that way as soon as you look at a Temperament: Good temperament is of the utmost importance – curious, alert, intelligent and friendly. Poor or vicious temperament is considered a fault. horse you can identify any areas of concern"

AGM RESULTS Official Results from our first AGM are on the following page. For a vote to pass, it needs 75% of the voting Members to approve it, as you can see all the Special Resolutions & Ordinary Resolution passed (accept for Spec Res 21 & Member Res 1). Spec Res nearly passed accept we were a vote short for it to be accepted. As you can imagine, with only 44 Members taking the time to actually submit votes, we were extremely disappointed with the number of votes submitted. A great deal of time, effort and money went into preparing, printing & sending out all the Resolutions to every eligible Member and we thank everyone who took the time to help with that process as it was a huge task. We also thank our Independent Electoral Officer, Mr Ron Camp for coming on board as the official AMHS Electoral Returning Officer, as his wealth of knowledge and experience is a huge asset for AMHS. Hopefully when our next lot of Resolutions go out for Member consideration we will have a much better response, as this is your Society and we are trying to include everyone with decision making when the future of the Society is being considered, which is why we are constantly asking for Members to get more involved.
NATIONAL COMMITTEE We are looking for Members who are interested in taking up the following National Committee Positions: Treasurer, Editor and a Committee Role. We need people experienced in the roles to apply who are willing and able to put in lengthy hours when required. You need to have regular/daily access to emails and respond to Committee Business (which is predominately by email) promptly and have time to take on extra Committee related business when required. Any Member that is interested in one of these positions is to send your enquiry to: admin@amhs.com.au so it can be addressed. All Member applications need to be in by 10th May for consideration. This is your chance to step up and take on a more active role within the Society as AMHS can only grow with the involvement of our Members.
Applications need to be by 10th May Page 38

STATE COMMITTEE We would also like to remind our State Committees that your elections will be held in May (all States accept QLD). To apply or re-apply for a State Committee position you need to send in your expression of interest to: admin@amhs.com.au State Level is a great way to kick off your Committee involvement, get to know other Members and take an active role in events planned for your State. We are always looking for more people to help with all the behind the scenes and on the day running of things with AMHS. Have a go, get involved and have some fun at the same time getting to know other AMHS Members in your area, it's a great way to get to get involved....
Applications need to be by 24th May
