AREA PARKS… campgrounds. Roughly half of the sites have electrical hookups. A group campsite that can accommodate up to 50 people is also available, as well as a horse camp area. Showers and facilities are available in both the upper and lower campgrounds. Independent file photo Camden State Park Highway 23, 10 miles southwest of Marshall. Camden State Park spans 2,247 acres and features a wooded valley along the Redwood River that cuts through native and restored prairieland. Colorful wildflowers and a variety of wildlife flourish here. Fish for brown trout in the Redwood River, hike the more than 15 miles trails or cool off in the spring-fed pool. 4.25 miles of mountain biking trails and 10 miles of horse riding trails are open in the summer. Winter recreation includes. cross country skiing, skate skiing, snowshoing and snowmobiling. Fishing is still allowed and normal seasonal limits apply. Trout fishing in the Redwood River and swimming in the parkʼs spring-fed pool is available for recreational use. Camden has three picnic areas, one open picnic shelter and one enclosed picnic shelter. 80 drive-in campsites and seven pull-through sites are available in the upper and lower
Garvin County Park Highway 59, 13 miles south of Marshall. The park provides nearly a thousand acres of riparian woodland along the heart of the Cottonwood River. Outdoor recreation features include 2.5 miles of hiking/cross country skiing trails, 5.5 miles of horse/snowmobile trails with a horse staging area, a softball field, playground equipment, a new 9-hole disco golf course and great opportunities for birdwatching.Turkey and deer archery hunting is permitted during appropriate seasons. Four campgrounds with 50 total campsites (most have electricity) are available from mid-May to mid-October. Shower facilities and a dump station are available in the lower campground. Camping rates are $15 per night for electric sites and $10 for non-electric sites. Numerous picnic tables are spread throughout the park and five large picnic shelters are available (four have electricity) to visitors. The warming house at the top of the old tubing hill can be rented throughout the year. The inner tubing hill has been closed for several years and equipment is no longer available for rental. Parks FROM PAGE 3 Lake Shetek State Park North of Currie, 33 miles southwest of Marshall. The word Shetek is Ojibwe for pelican. The park contains the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota which forms the headwaters of the Des Moines River. Fish for walleye or crappie, bike the paved Casey Jones State Trail or hike around loon island. A swimming beach, boat launch, playground equipment, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court and soccer field are available for summer recreation. Rowboats, canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and a paddle boat are available for rent at the park office. Snowshoes
can be rented and trails are groomed for snowmobiles during the winter months. More than 75 campsites, including drive-in, electric, cart-in and groups sites are available. Four camper cabins are also available for rent in the park and showers and facilities are located in the Oak Woods Campground. The park is also home to historic sites: the Koch Cabin that belonged to one of the Lake Shetekʼs earliest pioneer settlers; the Shetek monument, a memorial to the 14 settlers buried there who were killed during the Lake Shetek Massacre during the Dakota War of 1862; and additional sites that are marked with interpretive signs. Slaughter Slough, the site of the Lake Shetek Massacre, is just east of the park. 507-763-3256

The house was built in 1878 and designated as a National Historic Landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The residence was made into a museum and is now home to the Granite Falls Historical Society.
