COACHING STAFF Russell Hunt enters his second season at the helm of the Thundering Herd’s Swimming and Diving squad. In his first season, Hunt wasted little time in making a distinctive mark. Under his direction the team saw a marked increase in point total at the C-USA Championships, and saw 24 Top 10 Program Performer record times set at the event, including 3 Varsity records. Outside of competition the program placed 17 on the Conference USA honor roll for their diligent work in the classroom, and carried a 3.18 GPA. Hunt comes to Marshall after serving as the assistant swimming coach at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York from 2008-09. Working with head coach Stephen Jungbluth at CU, he was the program’s recruiting coordinator, head sprint coach and helped coach the school’s first NCAA championships qualifier. Under his reign, the program saw 34 new school records between both the men’s and women’s teams. During his time CU also captured the women’s Patriot League title as they went undefeated during the regular season, posted five Patriot League individual champions, 11 NCAA Division I “B” Cuts and the program’s first female NCAA Division I championship participant. Prior to Colgate, Hunt was an assistant coach at Ohio Northern University from 2005-08 under head coach Peggy Ewald. In his time at ONU the program saw 21 Ohio Athletic Conference individual and relay titles, three consecutive men’s conference titles, its first male NCAA participant in school history, first women’s conference title, three consecutive men’s and women’s regular season conference championships, one Academic All-American and 10 new varsity records set.
RUSSELL HUNT HEAD COACH
Hunt earned three letters in swimming at Kenyon College under legendary coach Jim Steen and helped Kenyon win three of its 31-straight NCAA Division III national championships. Hunt was the 2003 national champion in the 100 backstroke, is a 10time national champion, holds nine relay titles and received All-American honors 17 times during his career. He led off the 400 medley relay that broke the NCAA Division III record with a time of 3:16.70 in 2004. While at Ohio Northern, Hunt completed his juris doctorate at the university’s Pettit College of Law. Hunt graduated from Kenyon in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology.
Katie Moore
ASSISTANT COACH Moore enters her second season as Marshall University’s top assistant swimming coach, and is charged with the direction the Herd’s distance team. In her first season with the program she oversaw 8 new program top 10 performers in the 500, 1000, and 1650, developing practices and conditioning through the course of the season. She comes to the Thundering Herd after working a one-year stint as an assistant at Mount Union College. While there, she implemented the team’s strength program and helped coach the Raiders to an Ohio Athletic Conference Runner-Up, nine school records, 15 All-OAC swimmers and two OAC individual champions. Moore was also elected to the Ohio Athletic Conference’s Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year in 2010. Prior to MUC, Moore was a coach at Total Performance Swim Camp in Gambier, Ohio, from 2006 to 08. She counseled camp attendees in advanced swim techniques. The Lancaster, Ohio, native was a four-year letter winner at Kenyon College where she was a NCAA national qualifier and helped lead the Ladies to three NCAA team championship titles. Moore, a 2009 graduate in American Studies, was also named an Honorable Mention Academic All-American.
Jim Zagaria
HEAD DIVING COACH Jim Zagaria enters his second season as Head Diving Coach with the Thundering Herd after coaching the MU divers to program-firsts in 2010. Last season marked the first time in program history that Marshall had sent multiple divers to the NCAA Zones. Under Zagaria’s direction, Rachel Hannum, Haley Holmquist and Lauren Rone qualified for MU. Zagaria, a 2006 graduate of Metropolitan State University, was on the Iowa State diving team from 1997-2001. His coaching experience at the high school level began in 2001 at Ames High School, where he coached a state champion and an All-American. From 2003-05 he coached the Woodbury HS girls team, which produced one state champion and two AllAmericans. Zagaria also coached two All-State selections during his tenure at Anoka HS from 2004-06. He was named Section Diving Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Zagaria’s experience with the Twin City Divers (2003-09), where he was the associate head coach, saw 47 Junior National qualifiers, 28 Senior National qualifiers, a 2009 AT&T National Diving Championship, a 2009 Men’s Synchronizing Platform Championship and two divers attend the World Team Trials. He also served as the meet manager at the 2007 USA Diving Spring Nationals. At the college level, Zagaria has coached at the College of St. Catherine (2003-06), the University of St. Thomas (2003-05) and the University of Minnesota (2006-07). From 2003-06 he produced a finalist in both the one-meter and three-meter dives at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship. At UM he coached Big Ten finalists in the one-meter, three-meter and platform events; along with Divers of the Week and NCAA Zone qualifiers.
