Season Outlook Seniors:

2 01 20 13 3 ma ars r s ha hal ll l ten t enni n i s m edi ed i a gu g uiide de

Dominika Zaprazna and Kara Kucin bring veteran leadership to the Thundering Herd tennis squad for 2013. Zaprazna enters the season in search of her 60th career singles victory and hopes to end her Marshall days as one of the top ten winningest players in program history. Her 161 overall victories have her ranked 12th all-time entering the 2013 spring season. It will be a tough road ahead for the Bratislava, Slovakia native, though, as the Herd’s 2013 schedule includes four preseason nationally ranked teams and for the fact that Zaprazna will almost exclusively play in coach Mercer’s number one spot. Kucin, another four-year member of Mercer’s squad, has 58 career singles victories at Marshall and hopes to improve her all-time rankings as well. The Belleair, Fla. native will likely compete alongside sophomore Ellie Ball. The pair went 9-8 last season as a tag team and advanced to the doubles round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regionals.

Juniors: Maria Voscekova is coming off a successful 2012 season which saw her accumulate 13 singles and 15 doubles victories. Likely to be paired once again with Zaprazna on the doubles court, Voscekova will continue to play behind her fellow Slovakian on the second singles court. Voscekova was 11-5 at two singles and added four more singles victories last fall.

Karli Timko looks to continue the dominance she displayed over the Herd’s fall segment. Posting a 10-4 singles record and a 9-3 doubles record (with Dana Oppinger), Timko won two championships with her freshman doubles partner and advanced as far as the round of 32 in the ITA Atlantic Regional Main Draw. The Houston, Pa. native will compete anywhere from Mercer’s three singles to six singles spot.

Sophomores: Ellie Ball, a native of Bristol, England, competed in Mercer’s three singles sport last season and turned in nine wins with nine losses. That year also saw her compete three times at two singles. Ball went to three sets only four times but came away victorious in all but one. Kai Broomfield posted a 5-8 singles record in her true freshman season before posting an 8-6 record last fall. Her eight singles wins in tournament action last fall were complimented with a 4-2 doubles record where she and Ellie Ball took third in the White Draw Kitty Invitational bracket.

Freshman: Dana Oppinger, who represents the entirety of coach Mercer’s freshman class, will prove to be a great addition to the Herd’s 2013 squad. Once a junior member of the German National Team, the Weingarten, Germany native experienced her first tennis in the United States last fall. In tournament action, Oppinger was 3-8 in singles but managed a 9-3 record and two championships in doubles (partnered with Karli Timko).

Conference USA After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Conference USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excellence has been the league's guiding principle and remains today a common thread for a promising future. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men's and women's programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leadership in athletics, academics and in our communities.

The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Commissioner's Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing student-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD C-USA institutions are among the nation’s best in academic performance among student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions off the playing field as well. In 15 years, 153 student-athletes earned national ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, while 541 were named All-District. In addition, more than 20,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or received the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA IN THE COMMUNITY The conference’s footprint is concentrated with 12 members in nine states and a combined area population of nearly 17 million. More than 1.1 million living alumni represent C-USA schools across the nation. With a renewed commitment to community involvement, the conference has begun development of several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations.

All C-USA institutions sponsor Division I-A football, along with several other men's and women's athletic programs, many of which compete regularly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball).

Dr. Stephen J. Kopp Dr. Stephen J. Kopp is in his eighth year as president of Marshall University. During his tenure, Marshall has experienced unprecedented growth and development. Since Dr. Kopp became president in 2005, Marshall’s academic profile has grown dramatically with new high-demand majors and degree programs, including pharmacy, physical therapy and public health. Engineering has been re-established, has become fully accredited and is the school’s fastest-growing undergraduate major.

Under his leadership, $200 million in new buildings and building renovations have been completed and more than $100 million in new infrastructure development is under way, including a biotechnology incubator and applied engineering complex, a high-tech classroom building, a new soccer stadium, an indoor practice facility and a sports medicine translational research center. External funding for research has doubled and Marshall has become a leading university for advanced, highperformance computing and Internet2® connectivity. This evolution is positioning Marshall University to partner and compete globally. In addition to offering the nation’s leading graduate forensics program, the university has launched an undergraduate digital forensics program to respond to the needs of state and federal intelligence and law-enforcement communities, and the Rahall Transportation Institute at Marshall has advanced to become one of the top university transportation centers in the country. Marshall is also growing in enrollment. Last fall, the university welcomed the largest freshman class in its 175year history and in the coming months will undertake a new international student recruitment initiative. President Kopp joined Marshall following leadership positions with Midwestern University, Central Michigan University and Ohio University. He earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He served as a postdoctoral fellow at the St. Louis University Medical Center, and a research fellow and NIH fellow in the department of biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago prior to joining the faculty of Midwestern University. He and his wife Jane have two grown children and a golden retriever named Abby.

Mike Hamrick Mike Hamrick is starting his third year as the Director of Athletics and in that time frame he has been busy shaping a new vision for the future of Thundering Herd athletics. He has wasted little time in reaching out to former letter-winners, alumni and friends of the University to build a consensus on where the Thundering Herd family wants their program to be and the response has been incredible.

Hamrick served as the director of athletics at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for six years before returning to his alma-mater in July of 2009. At Marshall, he has spearheaded a $30 million fundraising campaign, two-thirds of which has come via the Vision Campaign, an initiative that is being co-chaired by Marshall legends Mike D’Antoni and Chad Pennington. Hamrick has also upgraded Marshall’s football scheduling, signing agreements with Purdue, Navy and Louisville, while renewing the deal with Miami. Hamrick played football at Marshall University from 1976 to 1980, starting at linebacker and defensive end his last two years. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in education from Marshall, he earned his master’s in sports administration from Ohio University in 1981. Prior to his position at UNLV, Hamrick was director of athletics at East Carolina University from 1995 to 2003. He also has been A.D. at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, assistant AD at Illinois State, and assistant A.D. at the University of Kansas. Hamrick is a native of Clendenin, W.Va., and a graduate of Herbert Hoover High School. He and his wife Soletta, who is also a Marshall graduate, reside in the Huntington area and are the parents of three children - twin sons, Brett and Justin (22), and daughter, Mollie Ann (20) who currently attends Marshall.

In his second year, Hamrick established a Football Enhancement Fund effort that has committed nearly $2 million towards the program and his efforts have also led to rapid growth and development in the Big Green Foundation and in Marshall’s M-Club that has increased donation levels by 50%. In addition to this, he negotiated a contract extension with ISP Sports in the summer of 2010 that poured nearly $3 million in needed facility enhancements into Marshall’s athletics venues, including major video board and sound system upgrades to Joan C. Edwards Stadium and significant signage and lighting improvements to the Cam Henderson Center. During his tenure, he has also increased the Big Green’s membership from 1600 to 3100 members.

Head Coach John Mercer This season John Mercer begins his 27th year coaching at the NCAA Division I level and his 11th at the helm of the Thundering Herd tennis team. In the most recent 2011-12 campaign, Mercer led the team to an undefeated home record while advancing to the C-USA quarterfinals. During the 2010-11 campaign Mercer led Marshall to an impressive 18-6 record and a peak of No. 34 in the ITA national rankings. It was a year that also saw him lead the doubles duo of Dominika Zaprazna and Michaela Kissell to an undefeated regular season and an NCAA Tournament berth. Mercer has an overall record of 162-73 as Marshall head coach that is good for a .689 winning percentage, and with each win he obtains, Mercer will continue to add to his total as the winningest coach in Marshall tennis history. Prior to last season, Mercer and the Herd embarked on a 2009-10 campaign that rewrote the Marshall record books. The team finished the season with an overall mark of 19-7, while hitting its highest national ranking in program history at No. 28. Marshall’s 11-0 record to begin the 2010 season was the best start in program history, and Mercer guided the Herd to the C-USA title match and 2011 National Team Indoor Championships that year. Mercer also saw two of his players (Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna) compete in the NCAA Tournament.

Mercer took over the head coaching duties in 2003 and led the team to a 19-8 record in his first season and a school best 22-5 mark in 2004. Marshall took home the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships in both 2003 and 2004, earning Mercer the MAC Coach of the Year award for both seasons. In the 2005 season, Mercer guided the Thundering Herd to its fourth consecutive MAC Tournament Title and NCAA appearance as the squad finished 19-8, and he was named the ITA East Region Head Coach of the Year. Before taking on the role of head coach, Mercer became the assistant coach at Marshall in 199495, joining his wife Laurie, the head coach at the time. While an assistant, Mercer helped build the program into a perennial MAC power and a force to be reckoned with on the national scene. During his time as the assistant, Mercer helped lead Marshall to its first ever Southern Conference regular season and tournament championship in 1997. After the team switched to the Mid-American Conference in 1998, Marshall was able to capture its first conference regular season championship in 2000 and its first tournament championship in 2002. In 2001, Mercer was named ITA East Region assistant coach of the year and was one of eight finalists for the national award. Mercer played his collegiate tennis at Penn State University, where he was an Academic All-Conference selection.

Following his stint with Penn State, Mercer served as an assistant men’s coach for the nationally-ranked University of Texas. While there, his teams consistently finished in the top-10 of the rankings, and Mercer was able to complete his master’s degree in exercise physiology. After a successful career at Texas, Mercer went on to join West Virginia University, where he served as the assistant men’s tennis coach for six years, winning five Atlantic-10 regular season titles and appearing in two NCAA tournaments when only 20 teams were invited annually. In addition, the Mountaineers finished ranked in the top-25 for two seasons and in the top-50 for three seasons during his tenure. During his career, Mercer has coached 11 All-Americans and coached in 14 NCAA Championships.

Mercer comes from a tennis family. In 2001, the Dr. Donald Mercer family was named “Family of the Year” for the Middle States. He has two wo brothers, Tom, who was an All-American at TCU and was ranked in the top-100 in doubles and top-300 in singles on the ATP pro tour, and d Ron Mercer, who also played at Texas and West Virginia held an ATP singles and doubles ranking. Marshall University tennis has the use of several outstanding facilities throughout the year as it continues to build championship traditions. The Brian David Fox Tennis Center, was dedicated on October 23, 2004. Brian was born on Dec. 17, 1972 in Huntington, W.Va. He graduated from Barboursville High School in 1991, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management and Marketing in 1996 at Marshall. Brian was employed by McJunkin Appalachian Oil Field Supply Company, a business started by his great-grandfather. Brian died on Dec. 14, 2002 in Huntington of pancreatic cancer. Brian enjoyed tennis, softball, and jogging, but is remembered for his love of Marshall University sports. The Brian David Fox Tennis Center has been newly renovated during last season with three new courts (above). The center also includes a new state-of-the-art scoreboard, and a new sound system with a location in the middle of campus. The original tennis center was built in 1995 and consisted of six lighted courts that were easily accessible from any campus location. The Herd also has use of the Huntington Tennis Club. The season begins in January, and the inclement climate forces matches indoors during January and February, but the Herd has the use of the Huntington Tennis Club, just 10 minutes from campus. All of Marshall’s facilities allow for maximum practice and performance yearround at the highest level.
