2010-11 Season Review
The 2010-2011 season saw Marshall University ‘s track and field team rise to prominence on both the Conference USA and national levels. As a strong group of athletes eager to compete, the members of the Thundering Herd track and field team set out last season with something to prove, and by season’s end, had done little to disappoint. For the athletes participating in the sprinting events, it was a year of personal achievement. Three school records were set by the sprints athletes, including the 300m time of 41.50 set by Vanessa Jules, and the 4x100 and 4x400 relay times of 46.60 and 3:45.50 set by Jules, Brittany Carey, Delkira Maybin, Moriah Njoku, Amber Pierson, and Hadassah Lynch. The visible, common denominator to all three of these sprints records is Vanessa Jules, who further went on to cap-off a very successful sophomore season by setting school high-jump records of 5’9.25’’ and 5’8.75’’ in the indoor and outdoor seasons respectively. Jules also took 3rd place at the C-USA Indoor Championships, and earned a spot on the All-Conference team. Fellow compatriot Jasia Richardson was also very successful in the jumping events, claiming 3rd place in the triple jump at the C-USA Indoor Championships, and 7th place in the Outdoor Championships. For her efforts, Richardson was also a recipient of All-Conference accolades. Perhaps the most high-profile track and field storyline of 2010-2011, though, was seen in the performances of sophomore Elaine Derricott. Derricott had arrived as a transfer from Radford prior to the season, but wasted little time in getting settled at Marshall. The Richmond, Virginia, native set two school records with 3710 points in the indoor pentathlon and 5139 points in the outdoor heptathlon. Furthermore, Derricott became Marshall’s first-ever Conference USA Champion with a 1st place finish in the outdoor heptathlon. For her efforts, she earned a spot on the C-USA All-Conference team, while teammate Lauren Dehays also gained respect with an 8th place finish in the outdoor heptathlon. In the throwing events, two Amandas – Hottenstein and Kennedy – paired with Elizabeth Barnhart to finish as scorers at the conference tournaments. At the C-USA Indoor Championships, Hottenstein placed 6th in the shot put, while Kennedy and Barnhart respectively finished 7th in the javelin and 6th in the discus at the Outdoor Championships. And last but not least there were the distance runners, who rounded off a strong showing by Marshall’s athletes in all track and field areas by setting two school records in the outdoor 3k steeplechase and distance medley relay. Allison Cox also made a name for herself by becoming a C-USA finalist in the 1500m at the Outdoor Championships, and Kathleen Clark was a C-USA All-Academic selection. All told, the 2010-2011 season was a successful one for the members of the Herd both individually and as a team. As the records were broken, higher standards were set, and the members of the Marshall track and field team can now look forward to the 2011-2012 season with a feeling of confidence.
2011-2012 Season Preview
2011-12 Season Preview
Head Coach Jeff Small enters his 16th season in charge of the Thundering Herd squad, and will once again team up with Assistant Coach Willie Johnson to prepare the team for action this year. With three returning All-Conference performers and a host of school record holders still on the roster, the 2011-12 season looks to be a promising one for the Marshall University track and field team. The returning All-Conference trio of Elaine Derricott, Jasia Richardson, and Vanessa Jules headlines a group of athletes that is just beginning to make a name for itself on the Conference USA scene. Derricott was champion in the outdoor heptathlon and All-Conference USA in the indoor pentathlon, while Jules and Richardson were All-Conference USA in the indoor high jump and triple jump, respectively. Amanda Kennedy and Elizabeth Barnhart also return to add further talent to a strong Herd squad, as they look to set new marks in the throwing events for Marshall this season. In other events, senior sprinters Brittany Carey and Delkira Maybin will be looking to end their collegiate careers on a high note, as they lead Marshall’s record-setting 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams back onto the track this year. As for the newcomers, Stephen F. Austin State transfer Crystal Walker will hope to give the Herd yet another top-athlete out on the track, as the junior from Dallas, Texas, looks to bring an added boost to the jumping events.

After marking its 16-year milestone during the 2010-11 season, Conference USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excellence has been the league's guiding principle and remains today a common thread for a promising future. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men's and women's programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leadership in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Division I-A football, along with several other men's and women's athletic programs, many of which compete regularly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball).
35 volleyball teams, 55 men's and women's soccer teams and 25 softball teams have earned NCAA Tournament bids. C-USA has sent three men's soccer teams to the NCAA College Cup, five softball teams to the Women's College World Series and three volleyball teams to the Sweet 16. The league has also had six national champions in NCAA track and field competition, one national champion in diving and numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in cross country, golf, swimming, tennis and track and field. Overall, Conference USA teams and individuals have made more than 600 NCAA appearances. SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD C-USA institutions are among the nation's best in academic performance among student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among C-USA's 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions off the playing field as well. In 15 years, 153 student-athletes earned national ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, while 541 were named All-District. In addition, more than 20,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll or received the Commissioner's Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA IN THE COMMUNITY The conference's footprint is concentrated with 12 members in nine states and a combined area population of nearly 17 million. More than 1.1 million living alumni represent C-USA schools across the nation. With a renewed commitment to community involvement, the conference has begun development of several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations. GOVERNANCE Along with the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC, Conference USA is one of the seven conferences having significant representation in the NCAA governance structure. The Presidents of the member institutions serve as the league's Board of Directors. A PROUD HISTORY; A PROMISING FUTURE Conference USA was formed in 1995 and quickly emerged as one of the nation's top conferences. The conference unveiled its name, logo and commissioner on April 24, 1995 in Chicago. The league's charter members included Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF.
21
After celebrating its 10th Anniversary during the 2004-05 season, C-USA began a new chapter in 2005-06 when its current membership came together to form the new look of the league. Since its formation, C-USA has established a strong foundation, an identity and a history that reflects the league's national presence. Fifteen years of remarkable history has reinforced the league's position in collegiate athletics, setting the course for the next decade and beyond.
Conference USA
The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Commissioner's Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing student-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
