Universal Design Studio
In my time at UDS I have developed knowledge and sensitivity to materials and overall interior development, that only an internationally active interior studio could provide. I have assisted from pitching, to design detailing, as well as submitting a project for planning application and following through construction. I have also developed useful skills in vectorworks.
Studio renovation British Airways QIC Residential tower IBM* Nespresso* *currently unable to disclose information on these projects 6
Universal Design Studio bought a building next door and are currently expanding. I was assigned with the design, development, planning application, and overseeing construction. The GF will be two meeting rooms, FF will be studio space, 2F will be model making, 3F will be the directors studio. GF has also been used as a temporary London Design Festival space for MAP, UDS’s sister company. Construction is currently on going, set to finish end of December

This is a project in London’s Soho neighborhood to develop a hotel that embodied the development of the neighborhood over the past 300 years. From the birth place of the plague, immigrant central to hub of London’s thriving creative force. I designed, rendered and 3D modeled the rooftop bar which is developed into different types of social spaces: bar, group booths, informal terrace, private event space- much like Soho itself which has lots of different types of spaces under one area.

This was the development of British Airways Construction Manual, which will have the standards for all their future stores. There are three tiers of membership, and each space has different amenities. Bespoke furniture was designed and detailed in collaboration with Universal Design Studios sister company Barber & Osgerby.

Interior design for two residential towers in London, currently in develoment. Originally designed by Dugan Morris, and then handed to UDS for further development. The idea is that these apartments are attractive to young couples which might soon become families. There are spaces which can be transformed into yoga rooms, offices, baby rooms, etc, the idea is to provide flexibility and acompany the natural growth of a family. Materials are genuine, simple and modern.

Sou Fujimoto
My time in Japan taught me many lessons, one of them being to not be afraid to think outside the box, but also to produce many iterations for the same concept. My diagrams, conceptual thinking, renderings and illustrator skills were greatly improved. My patience and dedication to architecture were greatly tested with the 14 hour, 7 day, work days.
Hokkaido Bridge Switzerland Canopy Chiba Townhall Paris Student Housing

This is a project for Sou Fujimoto’s hometown, Hokkaido. He was asked to design an emblematic bridge for the town. The concept draws on Hokkaido’s famous hills for inspiration, creating a weaving passage through different colored flora, resulting in a ‘floating forest’.

The requirement for this competition was to develop a canopy for the train station of Bulle, that was both iconic and relevant to the city. The project was born through an analysis of the typical arched bridges of Switzerland. The arch was inverted to bring views of the mountains into the station.

Competition for a town hall in Chiba, the south of Japan, a city surrounded by mountains. The concept is to bring to life the surrounding mountains, through the flow of the white roof. The space doubles both as a town hall and a community center. It is largely transparent to help bring the outside-inside and to allow flexibility of use.

Paris 13 is a district of Paris that has undergone intense renovation in the last years. For this student housing since the internal program space was small we focused on bringing the facade to life. The idea is these “dancing balconies” that create pockets of social interaction

SMNG-A
Smng-a was my first job out of architecture school and it was a good introduction to the field, I worked on a complete set of drawings for a Chicago Public school. I focused a lot on drawing standards being in charge of elevations and plans. I also did a lot of spec control and electrical coordination.

34
SMNG-A has been the Chicago public school architect of record for the last five years. In 2014 Chicago went through massive public spending cuts which reflect their tolerance for spending in architecture. SMNG-A was chosen to design this school as a guide line for the next phase of public school building. This project is currently in construction, set to open summer 2016.

Thesis
Louis Sullivan once said: “Chicago is young, clumsy, foolish, its architectural sins are unstable, captious and fleeting; it can pull itself down and rebuild itself in a generation, if it will…There can be no new New York, but there may be a new Chicago.”
38
As an European I found the empty American concrete plazas heart breaking. I sought to bring life to them. The outcome are these modular transparent teardrop shapes that are combined to inject the plazas with program. The programs ranged from libraries, food pods, greenhouses, water collectors, public pools, rock climbing, and aquariums.
