Vollmond means full moon – which also means high water. And it is the water that you are most aware of in this work that the choreographer Pina Bausch made in 2006, three years before her sudden death. “Meeting Pina was like finding a language, finally. Before I didn’t know how to talk. And then she suddenly gave me a way to express myself, a vocabulary. When I began, I was pretty shy – I still am – and after many months of rehearsing she called me and said: “You just have to get crazier!” And that was the only comment in almost 20 years.”

In Peter Pabst’s set, with a huge rock and a deep pool at the back, and under Fernando Jacon’s stunning lighting, the water pours from above in a fine curtain, or great gusting squalls; it is thrown in wide arcs from buckets; it sparkles through the long hair of the dancers. Symbol of life, of sex and a constant elemental fascination for Bausch, it also affects the movement performed within it, dragging long dresses with weight, causing slips and spills on the dancers’ frequent rapid runs across the space. It conditions the unfolding action, making it dark, dangerous and stunningly beautiful. In general, Vollmond finds Bausch at her most serene, emitting a heady kind of perfume. “It’s full moon,” says Nazareth Panadero, rolling the words, resplendent in red. “Don’t get drunk.” Yet an air of inhibition, of dazed wonderment, fills the space.

Pina was a painter. She consistently questioned us. That’s how we became the paint, to color her images. For example, she’d ask for “the moon”? I depicted the word with my body. So that she could see and feel it.

“Pina had the most penetrating eyes in the world. I’ve never encountered anyone else who could look at me and see through me like she did! Everything that I always tried to project simply vanished under her gaze. Instead, she saw something inside of me that frightened me, as I didn’t know it yet…”

“What is honesty? What is our responsibility, even when we dance? Pina taught us to stand up for what we do, for every gesture, every step, everymove.”
