Marta Ortolani is an architect, she is currently Assistant Professor of Urban Planning [ Laboratorio di Progettazione Urbana, prof Alessandro Gabbianelli ] at the School of Architecture and Design “Eduardo Vittoria”, University of Camerino. She is involved with prof. Luigi Coccia and prof. Alessandro Gabbianelli in the curatorship of a book exploring tourism and marginal areas. This publishing project includes the works of the undergraduate Workshop “RE-MOVE. Turismo e Aree Marginali, nuovi spazi per il tempo libero tra natura e cultura” focused on the recover of the disused travertine querry of Cole San Marco. She in member of the research group RuralStudio. Indagini sul territorio tra Italia ed Ecuador, composed of Italian and South American Universites, an international network that investigates the newly formed urban landscape. The field search is the middle-Adriatic territory, specifically along the river Tronto, a contex in which the recent economic crisis caused the arrest of urban sprawl and the rural model assumes a new importance in the paradigme of revelodeppment of this region. She investigates the dynamics of the contemporary city, especially the reasidual spaces, result of the trasformation process of the urban context. Through her projects she studied the RE-CYCLE theory about critical and abandonated areas of the city. She has a specific interest in LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE. She is currently activating a reflection on AGRIURBANISM, considered as innovative model of transformation of residual spaces of the urban sprawl.

The confluence of the rivers Rhone and Saona represents the true “raison d’etre” of Lyon. On the last strip of land wrested from the waters over the centuries, that is the Lyon peninsula, the Confluence Park aims to participate to the urban regeneration of this part of the city, redeeming her from one stage of decay due to the industrial past. The project is characterized by a dynamic system which provides the metamorphosis of its costituent elements: we are witnessing the trasformation of the artifice in nature and to reconquer the mainland water.

01

The site is palimpsest. Besides the industrial vocation, which belongs to a more recent past, a more careful search by map, highlighted the evolution of presqu’ile, the process of reconquest of land on water, the reclamation of this swampy area which is the confluence of two rivers, and the gradual expansion of the urban fabric. The dialectic relationship involving these two elements over the centuries, water and Earth, becomes the essence of the Confluence. * Plan Perrache| Lyon Confluence | XVIII sec.

Alessandro Gabbianelli

I attended the interdisciplinary search team established for the formulation of the plan for the reconstruction and development oh the University of Camerino, directed by prof. Massimo Sargolini. For the project “UniCampus 2017/2020“ my study was conceived in two steps. In the first one I took care specifically of the architectural and landscape quality and composition of the park and the leisure areas for university accommo-

dation. In the second step my investigation was especially focused on the areas for study the spontaneous vegetation, according to the French landscape architect Gilles Cleménts concept of “Tiers Paysage”. I proposed three solutions presenting different features concerning the interaction between the visitor and the green spaces.

“Tiers Paysage”: studies for green areas

|

ENCLOSURES

The first strategy, called ENCLOSURES, identifies a number of areas within the “Tiers Paysage” that can grow up undisturbed by any authorising action. It is an archipelago of vegetable gardens where human presence is discreet and confined to observation.

59

60

|

PENINSULAS

The second proposal, called PENINSULA, envisages green areas presenting a light infrastructure: a system of paths allowing the visitors to reach the garden and to establish a form of interaction.

|

BANDS

The last study, “The Bands includes a series of tracks passing through the entire section allowing the use of public equipment in the gardens.

This project is the new Pavillon created for the Venice Biennale of Architecture “Fundamentalsin 2014.The Pavillon is situated outside the Gardens, where the others pavillons are located. It represented a new landmark for Venice,tt immediately visible from the boats. The project is conceived like a path that develops the spaces around wather cloisters: the whole structure is built on the water. The ground floor contains the

enter for the main gallery and an open public space with a service area, bar and restaurant. At the first floor there are a gallery a and a confernce hall. The Pavillon include four studio for the artists that show their collection in the gallery. The studios are situated in the top of the buildings, where the artists can enjoy the wondwerfull panorama of Venice.

This project born to the necessity to revitalize an abandoned area near the center of the city. This area contains a failed kiln; the project consist to rehabilitate the pre-existent kiln and to create new buildings. The kiln include a SPA center: the galleries of the ovens contains the baths space. The complex has also a gym, massage spaces,

restaurants, bars and shops. The new buildings are destinated to a residence. The new elements and the pre-existent components of the project are linked by a big cover supported by a system of tree pillar. The cover made by texile panels, a new technology called I-Mesh.

The theme of this project is the environmental design. The objective is to design an area between the city wall of the historical center of Ascoli Piceno and the expansion of the new suburbs; the project provides and encourages people’s interaction and integrates the existing whith the new. It contains a museum, the Roman Theater

Museum, an open public space, a residence and a shop center. Each part of the project is linked to the others by an upraised pedestrian route. According the orientation and the features of the area and the nature of the several components of the project, different environmental devices are used.

A remote area of the Adriatic rich in natural resources provides the basis of a design workshop that seeks to create new spaces for tourism. The place: the hill of San Marco near Ascoli Piceno. The artist: sculptor Giuliano Giuliani. The material: travertine. This workshop explores creative ways to reconfigure a disused quarry on top of a hill, transforming it into a usable space for tourists.
