Isabel Lopez
My name is Isabel Lopez. I'm a student at Evergreen Community College studying Sociology to pursue social work. I'm a member and Arts/Cultura officer of MAIZ, a grassroots Latinx community organization that advocates for social change of marginalized communities. My family, community, and friends influence my art the most. My art is influenced by the San Jose community to advocate for social change. I'm not sure what kind of artist I would consider myself. I enjoy photography and making earrings.
What does "liberation" mean to you?

Liberation to me is change influenced by the people uniting together. I think liberation looks inclusive. Liberation is revolutionary, because it's freeing and hopeful for the community as a whole.
Is your creative practice one of liberation?
I don't hesitate to make art that makes people uncomfortable. I try to create statements or symbols in my art-- something that really matters. Making earrings makes me feel like I can be artistic and unapologetic at the same time. I use art as an outlet. I'm constantly thinking of new ideas. I want people to feel something when they see my art. I'm intentional about my art, whether it's a pair of earrings that carry a political statement or a picture I capture during a protest. It's a part of my identity and I'm constantly growing.
How can art be a tool in the revolution?
I think art has always been an important part of the revolution. Especially now, I think documenting what's happening with social justice movements. People can't ignore movements like Black Lives Matter. I think art is a meaningful way to push for change and share stories about real events and people.

My process of earring making starts with ideas. I consider what could I possibly create into earrings or a photos that'll advocate for radical change or make a powerful statement. I usually write notes in my phone or visualize what design I'm going to make before I begin. I gather all the beads together in each hoop for a specific design. Once all the beads are on a hoop, I super glue each side to secure the earring and attach it to each pieces to make it whole. I stamp every mailer, earring holder, and thank you card to make them look personalized. I include a thank you card and a resource card about I.C.E. to share information. When I take photos, I try not to overthink too much for a "perfect" photo. My photos are taken pretty quickly, because I don't have much time to photograph during some events. I keep an eye out for anything that should be documented. I try not to take too many photos at once to make it easier when I'm importing them/ editing them on my laptop. I try to keep the editing to a minimum as well to keep the photo genuine.
Are there any other reflections you'd like to share?
Taking care of my mental health has been a challenge. I wish I could tell everyone who is struggling with mental health that it will be okay. I've been reflecting on how my mental health impacts my capacity to create art and be involved.
