ART CLASS
When I discovered art class in high school, my teenage world changed. I loved walking into that room where it was a little messy, it smelled different and I could, most of the time, put headphones on and make things with my hands. The joy of making art was a gratifying break from tests, homework, and deadlines. It gave me a chance to take risks and try new art mediums without judgment.
When the class finished their pieces, their work would be displayed in the front foyer of my high school. I started to get better and create more and in return, the amount of my work exhibited grew. I observed my peers, visitors, faculty, and staff looking at what I created, and they would give me kudos if they saw me. It felt good. I felt special, talented, and unique. My confidence soared.
It’s an honor being able to compile this showcase of MVRHS artwork with the help of the staff at the high school, The MV Times, and our generous sponsors — Tea Lane Associates and Jardin Mahoney. My hope is to give these talented young artists another chance to be seen, a chance for their work to be shared in our community — and maybe even give them a little pep in their step.
